THE strain sensitivity, K, a property of metals defined as the unit change in electrical resistance per unit strain, was measured for commercial purity titanium wire to determine its usefulness as a strain gage material. A Kelvin double bridge, accurate to 0.000001 ohm, was used to make measurements from 0 to 1 pct total strain. A positive value of 0.17 for K was found. This compares with 2.15 for constantan and 3.5 for cold-worked invar, two of the more common strain gage materials. The effect of temperature also was determined. It was found that a change in temperature of 30°F caused the same resistance change as 1 pct strain. It is therefore concluded that titanium would have utility as a strain gage only if the thermal fluctuations in the specimen could be controlled to a high degree and in applications of very large total strain.

Would you give us a short biographical sketch including your birthplace, education and current activities? I was born Jan. 16, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and lived there the first 22 years of my life. I also spent quite a bit of time on a farm about fifty miles north of Minneapolis owned by relatives. During the Depression, we lived off of ten cows and about fifty chickens. I'm a full-blooded Swede all along the line, and I'll be the last one in my family since my wife is not of Swedish descent. I attended Macalester College, a small school in St. Paul, to study for the ministry originally. However I soon realized that I really didn't have the talents for the ministry and I could probably do as much or more in a field where I did have some talent.

This paper presents geological data regarding deposits of over 7,500,000 tons of fine-grained sulphide ore in barite gangue. A series of pyroclastics and arkoses was intruded by sills of quartz porphyry in connection with batholithic intrusions of granite 3 miles from Buchans. Gentle folding, with fracturing acid shearing of tuff beds and intruded quartz porphyry, accompanied and followed the intrusion of granite and porphyry. The sulphide-barite mineralization is localized primarily in fractured and sheared tuff beds, but also in the sheared quartz porphyry. Two structures have proved particularly favorable for mineralization-one, the center of an anticline; the other, a series of weak, incompetent tuff beds intruded by thin sills of quartz porphyry and located between strong beds of arkose. During the folding the weak tuff with intruded quartz porphyry was intensely sheared and contorted and subse-quently mineralized by sulphides and barite.

In the Ti-Cu system, the a' phase can be produced over a wide range of alloy composition witJwut the retention of measurable amounts of the ß or ? phases. This paper reports on the decomposition of this hexagonal martensite phase front the standpoint of solute corzcentratiorz, tempering temperature, and coherency strain condition. The mechanism of precipitation during tempering comprises localized precipitation which is followed by discontinuous precipitation if sufficient coherency strains are present. The localized precipitation process in hypoeutectoid alloys is described by the generalized Johnson-hiehl equation and an activation energy of 46,000 cal per mole. In hypereutectoid alloys the corresponcEing activation energy is 51,000 cal per mole. The rate-controlling process has been proposed as the difision of copper along a' platelet interfnces. SEVERAL investigations have been reported concerning the kinetics of decomposition of the mar-tensitic a' phase in titanium binary alloys.' In the Ti-Mo system,' two modes of a' decomposition have been observed in the presence of /3 phase; one of these involves the precipitation of fine a from a', and the other involves diffusion across the a'-ß interface. In studies of the Ti-Cr system, Rostoker2 did not detect the formation of TiCr2 during tempering. In Ti-Ni alloys,3 the intermediate phase Ti2Ni has been found to precipitate directly from a' along the interfaces between plates. With the exception of the study of Ti-Ni alloys the previous investigations of tempering phenomena in substitutional martensites are mainly qualitative and do not present a detailed description of the precipitation processes. The following limitations restrict the correlation of the microstruc-tural processes and reaction kinetics during tempering in most binary-alloy systems. 1) A mixture of at least two phases characterizes the constitution of quenched alloys. 2) Difficulties have been encountered in obtaining uniform structures throughout quenched samples. 3) The reaction products, and in particular their morphology. have not been clearly resolved. 4) The martensitic a' phase forms over only a limited composition range for most titanium-base binary alloys. Gomez and polonis4 showed that the Ti-Cu system provides an excellent basis for investigating the tempering of a' over a range of composition without the complication of retained P or the transition w phase. In the present work the effects of solute concentration, tempering temperature, and coherency strain conditions are considered with reference to the over-all precipitation process in quenched alloys of the Ti-Cu system. Both microstructural observations and kinetic data are correlated to define the rate-controlling processes which govern the observed localized and discontinuous precipitation reactions. An earlier paper5 was devoted to a discussion of the modes of heterogeneous nucleation of Ti2Cu from the martensitic a' structure. The present paper will therefore emphasize the progress of the tempering reaction beyond the initial stages. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The Ti-Cu alloys for this study were prepared by conventional arc-melting procedures. Chemical analysis revealed that the alloy buttons contained approximately 0.02 wt pct 0, 0.04 wt pct N, and within 0.1 wt pct of the intended copper concentration. The progress of the tempering reaction was followed by means of electrical-resistance measurements utilizing a Kelvin double bridge, microhard-ness readings with a 400-g load, and X-ray dif-fractometry patterns to reveal line-broadening effects. Metallographic specimens examined at magnifications greater than X1000 were shadowed with germanium to reveal fine structural details. Direct carbon replicas were prepared for the electron-microscopy studies. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Property Changes. The changes of microhardness that accompany the precipitation of Ti2Cu from a' are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. As the solute concentration increases the peak hardness, for a given tempering temperature, increases. In alloys of given composition the time to reach the peak hardness agreed with the time to attain maximum X-ray diffraction peak breadth, as shown in Fig. 3. The maximum hardness and the maximum line breadth increased with lower tempering temperatures, and the time to reach the maximum also increased. Floris Osmond, Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, born in Paris, March 10, 1849, died at Saint-Leu near that city, June 18, 1912. Taken suddenly ill with congestion of the brain while on his way from Paris to his home, he reached it in time to write on the typewriter his last wishes, one of which was that no biographical notice of his life should be published. Holding Osmond's memory sacred, as those who have known him will, is it our duty to conform with his desire ? Shall no mention be made in our Transactions of the beautiful life and great achievements of one of our most honored members? Is it not, on the contrary, incumbent upon us to disregard Osmond's instruction in this matter and to place on record our admiration for the nobility of his life, for his talents and for the importance of his work, that younger men may be inspired by it with a desire to be guided by worthy motives in the path of unselfish pursuits ? I cannot feel that in following this course I am disloyal to Osmond's memory and I am strengthened in this belief by the opinion of men of high honor whom I have consulted before undertaking the writing of this obituary notice. One of them, Professor Henry M. Howe, justifies my decision better than I could do it myself when he writes : " Let us look frankly at the matter. Here we have a most extraordinary life, a life of rare beauty and power of inspiration to the rest of mankind. In my opinion we should not deprive mankind of the stimulating influence of the example of M. Osmond simply because he shrank from publicity. Our young men see every day how greed and vulgar push succeed, and with what material rewards they are crowned. They see too rarely the more valuable crown which comes to self devotion. A permanent and public recognition of the beautiful qualities of Osmond's life cannot fail to appeal to the imagination of young men and to help to deflect them toward leading a noble rather than a sordid life. Therefore I feel that the Revue de Métallurgie and other bodies owe it to the public to give prominence to his career by means of biographical notices."

A series of dilute solid solutions of a1uminum and silicon in copper, in powder -form, were internally oxidized, compacted, and extruded, to produce Cu-A12O3 and Cu-SiO2 alloys with 0.1 to 12 vol pct of oxide. Room-temperature tensile tests, creep-rupture tests from 450oto 850°C. conductivity measurements, and recrys-tallzzation studies were made. Oxide particle size and interparticle spacings were determined in an effort to relate the structure to measured strength values by means of known dispersion strengthening theories. A new dispersion strengthening theory, based on the effect of the dispersed phase on the retention of strain energy from the deformation step, zs proposed for this type of alloy, THE study of dispersion strengthening is of partitular interest in high-temperature materials technology in view of the excellent creep-rupture Properties and thermal stability achieved with SAP.1-5 Considerable effort has been devoted to this study in recent years, and encouraging results have been obtained in a number of systems.6 In general, the most

In the brown rock phosphate fields of Tennessee there are large deposits of phosphate matrix in which quartz is a major constituent of the gangue, and which cannot be beneficiated by the conventional washing process to yield a concentrate of suitable grade for use in the electric furnace. A huge tonnage of high-grade phosphate concentrate is produced in the Florida pebble district from low-grade siliceous feed. However, the characteristics of the low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore are such that flotation under the conditions employed in treating the Florida ore1,2 results in inadequate beneficiation. Investigation of Flotation Methods Flotation has been used in 'Tennessee primarily to produce a concentrate of premium grade by moderate enrichment of a marketable grade of phosphate. 3,4 A secondary use was to increase the recovery of phosphate from the fines (down to approximately 200 mesh) from medium-grade ores with a concomitant moderate increase in over all grade.3,5 It was considered desirable to investigate methods of improving the grade of washed products from low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore when these products were substantially below the requirements for use in the electric furnace. The present paper describes the results of a laboratory-scale study of factors that affect the beneficiation of such siliceous phosphate ore by flotation. The primary objective of the investigation was to ascertain the conditions under which the ore could be made to yield a concentrate suitable for reduction in the electric furnace. It was assumed that a phosphate concentrate for electrothermal reduction should contain at least 26 pct P2O5 and should have a weight ratio of silica to lime of not more than 0.80. Since a concentrate of moderate grade can be used in the electric furnace, and since, as Grissom4 has shown in detail, the ore will not bear the cost of expensive treatment, the study of collectors was limited to the relatively inexpensive fatty acids. A secondary objective was to determine whether a portion of the phosphate could be recovered in a grade suitable for treatment with phosphoric acid to produce 45 pct superphosphate. The ore consisted of variably cemented sand interlayered with clay. The sand layers were composed of grains of quartz, phosphate, and clay embedded in a matrix of clay and phosphate. Some clay was finely disseminated in the phosphate grains. Little massive high-grade phosphate was present. The material used in the flotation tests was a washed sand that had been separated from the ore in a bowl classifier at the TVA phosphate-washing plant. The percentage composition of the sand was as follows: P2O5, 20; SiO2, 40; CaO, 29; Fe2O3, 2; Al2O3, 3; F, 2.3. The particle-

CONSIDERABLE uncertainty is revealed in the literature regarding the nature of the titanium minerals which make up the bulk of the heavy, opaque fractions of numerous beach sand deposits of the world. An investigation was made, therefore, of beach sand concentrates of North Carolina, Florida, Brazil, and India. Magnetic concentration, X-ray, and microscope data were obtained which show that these concentrates consist essentially of ilmenite and its alteration products. The alteration, brought about by oxidation and leaching of iron values, has resulted in upgrading the ores to a range of 56 to 64 pct TiO2, as compared with 52.7 pct in ilmenite of theoretical composition. Conclusions drawn regarding the nature of the dominant titanium-bearing mineral in beach sand deposits have been based mainly on chemical composition, specific gravity, and petrography. This material has usually been referred to as ilmenite or weathered ilmenite. It has also been referred to as arizonite because in chemical composition it resembles an occurrence in Arizona which was described by Palmer1 in 1909.

The microstructural changes during rolling and at various stages of recrystallization in (111)[112] oriented single crystals of Si-Fe have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. At very low deformation, the dislocation structure consists of jogged dislocation lines, edge dislocation dipoles, and numerous dislocation loops, which may be interpreted by the jog-formation mechanism in moving screw dislocations. Up to 70 pct rolling reduction, no sharply defined cells are formed. Subgrain forma- tion takes place somewhat earlier in the annealing process than in a similarly processed (110)[001] crystal. This may be partly responsible for the reported difference in the rate of recrystallization between (111)[112] and (110)[001] crystals. Evidence indicates that the formation of recrystallization nuclei occurs largely by the coalescence of sub -grains. This is consistent with previous observations on other Si-Fe crystals. AVAILABLE data in the literature indicate that the main features of rolling and annealing textures in (111)[112] and (110)[001] crystals are essentially similar. OF widespread interest to all lead metallurgists is a dross smelting process that will consistently give mattes and speiss of low lead and high copper contents. It is a problem that has intrigued operators through the years. In the past few years, with increased amounts of copper and overcrowded metallurgical furnaces, it has been almost imperative to evolve some method. Experience at El Paso has shown that high copper-to-lead ratios can be consistently attained by use of the new soda process. † Older Methods Three older methods, i.e., 1. Dross plus siliceous ore and limestone. 2. Dross plus one fourth blast-furnace speiss and siliceous ore, 3. Dross plus sulphides and siliceous ore and scrap iron, do not give consistent results and the products are higher in lead and lower in copper than those produced with the soda process. Any radical changes in the blast-furnace drosses will throw any of these older methods into a tailspin. For almost ten years, El Paso used the third method, with varying results. It was noted that as the arsenic and anti- mony contents of the dross increased, the speiss and matte steadily increased in lead and decreased in copper. A dross containing four parts of copper to one part of arsenic was considered to be ideal. At times this balance of copper to arsenic was almost impossible to obtain, especially when handling copper Cottrell dusts, which vary so greatly in copper and arsenic. Custom smelters like El Paso, handling a great variety of dusts, concentrates and ores, are apt to have anywhere from I to 15 pct copper on charge, with a variable in arsenic of from 0.5 to 2 pct. With such conditions, and drosses varying from 12 to 40 pct copper, an operator using the older dross reverberatory practices would find it just about impossible to control the reverberatory operations and to produce a good product low in lead and high in copper. These conditions prevailed at El Paso from the year 1940 to the present. In May 1942 it was decided to experiment with the soda process. The Soda Process After considerable work the soda method was finally evolved to the present state. It has never failed to produce a good product even under the most adverse conditions. It might be well to remember that many men of thought in the smelting industry have at one time or other sugge~ted the removal of all copper, arsenic and antimony from the lead blast-furnace charge as an aid to better metallurgy.

CURRENT widespread applications of aluminum in such industries as transportation, mining, and construction would have amazed the early proponents of its use, including Napoleon III, French Emperor Batik ill the middle nineteenth century, when aluminum was a precious metal, Napoleon had visions of making his army light and mobile through the use of aluminum for gun carriages, helmets, canteens, sabers, and similar articles. Its lightness has made possible such modern marvels as the Union Pacific streamline trains, the Boeing and Douglas giant airships, and up-to-date mining equipment such as the new Calumet and Hecla mine skips.
