The extension of metallurgical control of steelmaking processes has always made it desirable to have some quick method for determining the oxygen content of molten steel. To meet the practical demands of the steel industry, this method must also be simple enough so that the sampling can be done by the regular furnace crew. This requirement was kept in mind continually in the work to be described. An oxygen value is required for proper control, whether it be of a rimming steel or of a fully killed steel. However, two factors have discouraged the development of such direct methods: i. The reaction C + FeO Fe + CO is rapid enough to make the correct sampling Of the bath a difficult problem. The most generally accepted means of circumventing this difficulty have been the aluminum-killed bomb test of McCutcheon and Rautiol and the aluminum-killed spoon test of Herty.2 The theory of these tests is that all of the oxygen in the iron is converted to Al2O3, which can then be determined by chemical methods. Even when simplified so that the analysis is made by a measurement of turbidity, this method is too slow to be used in routine control. Furthermore, the results obtained have never been entirely satisfactory, and some of the reasons for this will be discussed later in this paper. z. The ordinary chemical methods of analysis for oxygen in steel are not reliable. The only analysis that seems to possess sufficient dependability to be of value is vacuum fusion,3 and the apparatus and technique developed for this have been too complex and slow for routine work. Indirect Methods Indirect methods of estimating the oxygen have been resorted to in mill practice. Generally these depend upon the chemical equilibria involved. The oxygen in the bath is related to other components in the slag or metal that can be analyzed the readily. These methods have many difficulties in common. Steelmaking processes involve a complicated set of interrelated reactions, all of which tend to approach equilibrium at varying rates. The degree to which any particular equilibrium is approached is not well established. Moreover, a proper use of theoretical equilibrium constants requires a more extensive knowledge of the activities of the con- than we now have. This is well illustrated by the irregularities observed when trying to determine the oxygen in the metal by its ratio to the iron oxide in the slag. Equiliblium relations may be used mole readily if they are evaluated by plant experience, but the extent of approach to equilibrium remains an undetermined variable and lack of an entirely satisfactory mean, of determining oxygen for the calibration is felt keenly, For example, the statistical analysis of the relation between carbon and oxygen4.6 illustrates that even iia a single plant wide variations exist under llormal conditions of operation. With the trend toward deeper and consequently hotter holes, measurements of drilling mud properties at atmospheric temperatures are becoming increasingly inadequate.' Both the prediction and control of down-hole mud properties depend in part upon our knowledge of temperatures in the wellbore. Consequently, a better understanding of factors that affect temperatures during circulation and trips could improve drilling operations. It was toward the goal of obtaining this understanding that this study was directed. Other investigators2 have studied the response of fluid temperature in the borehole during trips. However, all of these studies have used an assumed formation temperature profile at the conclusion of circulation and have provided no means to calculate this profile directly. In this study, the formation profile during circulation was calculated. Other investiga-tors3-5 have also studied bottom-hole temperature during circulation. However, they have developed neither general techniques for calculating the entire temperature profile in the system nor generalized methods for predicting bottom-hole fluid temperatures during circulation. Such techniques and methods have been developed and are discussed briefly in the following pages. Temperature Behavior During Circulation Circulation of fluid during the drilling operation is represented schematically in Fig. 1. The process of circulation has three distinct phases: (1) fluid enters the drill pipe at the surface and passes down the drill pipe; (2) fluid exits the drill pipe through the bit and enters the annulus at the bottom; and (3) fluid passes up the annulus and exits the annulus at the surface. To simulate the thermal behavior of the fluid in the system, each of the phases of circulation must be described mathematically. In Phase 1, the fluid enters the drill pipe at a specified temperature, TDo. As the fluid passes down the pipe, its temperature is determined by the rate of heat convection down the drill pipe, the rate of heat exchange between the drill pipe and the annulus, and time. Phase 2 of the circulating process merely requires that the fluid temperature at the exit of the drill pipe be the same as the fluid temperature at the entrance of the annulus; i.e., TD(L,t) = TA(L,l). Thus in Phase 3, the fluid enters the annulus at TD(L, t). As the fluid flows up the annulus, its temperature is determined by the rate of heat convection up the annulus, the rate of heat exchange between the annulus and the drill pipe, the rate of heat exchange between the formation adjacent to the annulus and the fluid in the annulus, and time. These rates of heat exchange and the time dependency of mud temperature are described by well known heat-flow equation.6 Consequently, as shown in the Appendix, the temperature profiles in the drill pipe, annulus, and formation can be obtained by solving Eqs. 1 through

MEASURES appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient has accumulated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors-the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Control of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious air- borne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects-one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer. I-FACTORS COMPRISING THE DEGREE OF INDIVIDUAL SUSCEPTIBILITY Thorough investigations conducted among miners who have labored for years in the presence of recognized silicosis hazards usually reveal an impressive difference in the injury incurred by men whose exposure to dust has been nearly identical. After a quarter century underground, one individual is short of breath and incapacitated with miners' complaint, while a fellow workman suffers no pulmonary embarrassment and is in good health. Physicians ascribe this oft-observed difference in reaction to individual susceptibility and express a universal regret when they deplore the fate that chose to make the predisposed youth a miner rather than a farmer. To trust the health of miners to fate at the present time is even more unfortunate, because many of the factors that influence man's susceptibility to dust are known, and can be accurately determined by competent medical methods. Among the most important factors comprising susceptibility to injury by dust are the anatomical peculiarities of the individual's respiratory mechanism, his physiological response to the inhalation of dust, his previous dust exposure, the existence of pulmonary infections or other pathological processes in his lungs, his age,

T HE Tonopah Extension assay office is a two- story, concrete structure on a solid foundation of andesite, situated about 100 yd. from the company's mill, so that it will not be affected by the stamps or the tube-mills; also it will not be affected by under- ground blasting. On the second floor are the mine superintendent's office and drafting and blueprint rooms. On the ground floor are the assayer's office,' mixing room, furnace room, crusher room, chemical laboratory, parting room, store room, and change and shower room for the mine superintendent, assayers, and engineers. The crusher room is outside of the main building, and has four concrete walls, thus eliminating the jar of the crusher; it is so situated that the least possible amount of dust spreads through the main building. An 8 by 10-in. jaw crusher, which crushes to ¼ in., was made by a local foundry. Attached to the top is a small galvanized-iron hopper covered with a ¼ in. screen, on to which the sample is dumped. The fines-pass through the screen into the hopper, while the oversize is dumped into the crusher. The crushed sample and fines from the screen drop down to a set .of splits suspended from an iron rod below the crusher jaws. The small sample is caught below in a small pulp pan. The rejects drop from the splits through a 2-in. pipe on to a bucket conveyor, which dumps into a galvanized-iron hopper in an upper corner of the room. The rejects drop through a 2-in. pipe to a reject bin outside the build- ing. This bin is constructed high enough for a truck to be loaded from it by means of a chute door on the side.

T HE ore-dressing problem at Tul Mi Chung is complicated by the unusually complex nature of the ores. These come from replacement ore- bodies in limestone at the contact with a granite batholith, and contain copper, gold, silver, bismuth, molybdenum, iron, arsenic, zinc, and lead, the first two metals constituting the principal sources of profit. Iron is present as pyrite, magnetite, and hematite. Arsenic occurs both as mispickel and lollingite (FelAsa), the latter carrying a certain amount of finely divided gold. The gangue minerals are those typical of limestone con- tact-metamorphism and include a large percentage of garnet, together with diopside, serpentine, calcite, epidote, zoisite, actinolite, 'mica and other minerals. A part of the gold occurs in a free state; some is combined with chalcopyrite and lollingite, and a consider- able proportion is contained in the pyrite. Researches towards the improvement of recovery have been energetically conducted since 1915. Amalgamation, gravity concentrating tables, vanners, can- vas plants, etc., have all been tried and discarded in favor of flotation. It was very quickly established that fine grinding was essential for satisfactory recovery. This was and is still accomplished in Hardinge ball and pebble mills. A comparative test showed that when the ore was crushed to the point at which it contained 20 to 26 per cent. coarser than 100 mesh, the gold recovery was only 55.9 per cent., whereas when crushed so that only 11 to 15 per cent. was coarser than 100 mesh, the gold recovery was increased to 82.5 per cent. No particular difficulty was ever experienced in making a satisfactory recovery of copper but the losses in gold were considered serious and led to the investigation described in this paper.

In planning modem-day mining operations, management needs to pass from the area of subjective decision-making to an area of objective decision-makirlg. Planning procedures currently being practiced by many mine managers depend primarily on common sense and trial-and-error methods which oftentimes never reach optimum solutions. For this reason, an attempt is made to provide an understanding of linear programming to solve production planning problems. More specifically, a linear programming model is proposed to solve the production scheduling problem as it was found to exist in the crushed stone industry. Optimal production scheduling is of prime concern here, since the industry has to cope with seasonal demands for its products. The solution, as determined through the application of the model, provides management not only with an optimal production schedule but also with the following information regarding the improvement of existing facilities: (I) the location of bottlenecks which limit production and profit; (2) the directions in which the company i fixed equipment should be expanded or modified; and (3) the evaluation of unused resources. Future trends in stone production will quite likely parallel those in the construction industry. Continued record expenditures for structures such as dams, highways, and buildings are the reasons for this accelerated growth. Production forecasts for the next decade are predicted to be around one billion tons with an approximate 7% annual increase. The problem of increasing production from 570 million tons in 1966 to 1 billion tons by 1976 offers no small challenge. This situation is further compounded by other problems and economic factors. Population expansion, government regulation, labor agreement, and changes in technology wd cause managers and operators to be confronted by many more complexities than characterize present-day operations. Some of these. problems and economic factors are: (1) In some metropolitan and other urban areas, easily accessible sources of stone are almost depleted. Transportation costs will be a prime concern of the industry. (2) Population growth has forced residential expansion to a point where many quarry operators must conform to urban and suburban regulations. (3) Government regulation in regard to air and water pollution, noise, and reclamation as well as zoning developments necessitate that crushed stone producers keep abreast of changing conditions and requirements. (4) The crushed stone industry operates under pressure of a highly competitive situation. Every company's objective is to retain a favorable marketing position by exercising great attention to production and marketing costs. This is rather difficult, since the crushed stone industry is one segment of modern mining which has to cope with a seasonal demand for its products. Among the problems posed here, the one of exercising great attention to production and marketing costs is of current interest to management. Under seasonal demand conditions, this problem creates further difficulties for managers who need to plan and forecast. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Various methods of Operations Research have been developed to handle a problem whose genesis is explained above. It is very seldom, however, that these quantitative means are used in practice by the mining industry. This paper describes the use of Operations Research methods to solve a production planning problem when demand is seasonal. The seasonal production planning problem is an important one because of the substantial costs associated with changing production, employment, and inventory levels to adjust to seasonal sales patterns. Most companies try to operate within reasonable levels of employment changes and hold inventories within storage capacities. In general, little or no attempts were made to develop minimum cosl schedules or to provide objective means to compare various production policies. THE rate of elimination of carbon largely controls the time required to make a heat of steel by the basic open-hearth process and to an important degree determines the cost of refining. Practical experience has led to the generally accepted belief that the use of slags relatively high in iron oxide, such as are required to bring about rapid refining, leads to a certain sacrifice of quality in the product. As a consequence, a compromise must be made between the exceedingly slow rate of carbon drop which would correspond to the ideal case and the rapid rate which would best satisfy the condition of minimum cost. An increase in rate of refining necessarily implies an increase in the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. However, even for the infinitely slow rate that corresponds to slag-metal equilibrium, the metal would contain a certain definite concentration of dissolved iron oxide. It is a matter of great practical importance, therefore, to determine the quantitative relation between the minimum or equilibrium concentration of iron oxide in the metal and the higher concentrations which must actually obtain in practice. The present paper is devoted to the development of certain equations, derived from the established laws of physical chemistry, which will enable this relation between rate of refining and the degree of oxidation of the metal bath to be computed from operating data. No attempt is made to exhaust the possibilities of this general method of treatment. In considering rate of refining, attention is mainly confined to rate of carbon elimination. However, the equations are of a more general nature and their application may readily be extended. The results of the preliminary calculations given herein indicate that increased rate of refining may have a decided effect in increasing the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The uncertainty. which attaches to the calculated value for this relationship arises in part from probable errors in experimental data on which the calculations are based, and in part from the lack of complete or favorably disposed information on basic open-hearth practice.

Payloader The Frank G. Hough Co. has made available another four-wheel drive tractor-shovel. It has a 1 cu-yd bucket with 60 hp Diesel or 54 hp gasoline power optional. The use of large pneumatic tires, same size all around, and drive on all four wheels gives this new Payloader traction to work effectively in sand, mud and snow, and travel on pavements with- [ ] out injuring the surface. Rear wheel steer with power booster plus short wheel base makes it easy to operate and highly maneuverable. Four speeds in both directions insure fast travel speeds for transport and fast operating speeds on shuttle loading or similar operations. A history of the progress made in copper refining in Montana is presented. The casting furnaces and the newly rebuilt electrolytic refinery are descmbed and operating details are given. Experiences with various addition agents, effects of rernoval of chlorine from the electrolyte, and effects of separan on electrolyte and on copper deposit are discussed. Observatzons are made on the effect of various impurities in anode copper and behavior of thezr salts in electrolyte and in slime, on treatment of slime for removal of copper, and on electrolyte puriification problems. The improved method for production of starting sheets is described. Attention is given to new materials for construction and to improvement in matrials handling ad quality control. COPPER refining at Great Falls, Montana, dates back to 1892. The original plant produced 65,000 lb. of cathodes per day at a current density of 16 amp per sq ft. In this plant anodes and cathodes were handled to and from the cells by means of hand-operated chain blocks and were moved about the plant by hand trucks. Cathodes were melted in coal-fired, reverbera-tory furnaces, were charged by hand, and refined copper was dipped by hand and cast in iron molds. In 1916, a new, modern plant with capacity to refine 18 million Ib. copper per month was built. Two refining furnaces were built, and each was provided with a twenty-mold Clark casting wheel. In 1922, the furnaces were converted to the use of pulverized coal: in 1923, to the use of oil; and in 1928, to the use of natural gas. In 1926, the plant was enlarged 50 pct. The use of pulverized coal for refining copper at Great Falls was discussed1 in a paper presented at the Salt Lake City meeting of the Institute in September 1925. Also, a comparison of the use of various fuels in copper refining furnaces was discussed 2 in a paper presented at the New York meeting of the Institute in February 1932. Prior to 1943 the cellroom was operated with twenty-five 720-lb. anodes and 26 cathodes per cell. Four cathodes, each weighing about 165 lb., were produced from an anode. In 1943 the weight of the anode was reduced to 460 lb., and two cathodes, each weighing about 190 lb., were produced from an anode. In 1949, a Billet Casting Wheel for the production of 3 in. diam phosphor deoxidized billets was built. A paper, presented at the New York Meeting of the Institute in February 1956, describes3 this plant and operation. In the electrolytic refinery, production is controlled by variation of the current density. In 1956, germanium rectifiers on a separate electrical circuit were provided for the starting sheet section so that current density could be maintained at any desired figure. Also in 1956, a program of modernization and enlargement of the Electrolytic Copper Refinery was started. This program, when completed, will raise the capacity of the Great Falls Electrolytic Copper Refinery approximately 33 pct, to 33 million lb. of cathodes per month. Furnace capacity for melting cathodes and anode scrap is ample to take care of the increased production from the electrolytic refinery. This fortunate condition came about primarily as the result of the three following changes: 1) The furnaces were lengthened 10 ft in 1922 when the fireboxes were found unnecessary for burning powdered coal. 2) Furnace life, and hence furnace capacity, was increased by the successful efforts of the Copper Refinery staff to develop a method for sanding furnace side walls and roof. 3) The natural gas being used has a very low sulfur content. As a result, it is possible to reduce time spent rabbling and poling and thus greatly increase tons per furnace charge. TANKHOUSE AND TANKS The Great Falls Electrolytic Refinery is 535 ft long by 252 ft wide. The cells are arranged in four crane bays in which are operated seven 10 ton Whiting Cranes. The old cells are in groups of ten, with circulation of electrolyte through five cells in cascade and with aisles between the groups of ten cells. The new cells are nested in groups of sixteen with no aisles, are all on one level, and have individual circulation to each cell. Present plans call for 1792 commercial cells and 128 stripper cells. To reduce confusion during the construction period, and to use the cranes, cars, and other equipment already on hand, the cells in the rebuilt section were designed to have approximately the same inside dimensions as the cells in the old part of the

Who is particularly interested in that subject? The type of boilers is practically a standard practice now. I do not know of anybody that is using the tandem system now. No one is building a plant with a tandem system in it.

The need for mechanized drilling to decrease mining costs has resulted in the development of the jumbo from column-and-bar drill carriages to hydraulically controlled jib jumbos. Resultant savings from use of improved jumbos have been high enough usually to retire the machinery investment within a year. The jib jumbo unit has been applied successfully to development and preparation programs and flat-bedded stopes, and an even wider field is forecast for its use.

BENEFICIATION of iron-bearing formations is one of the major problems of research at the Michigan College of Mining arid Technology. Funds for this purpose hate been supplied by the State of Michigan supplemented by contributions of labor and some supplies from the Federal Government during the depression. The iron-mining companies have cooperated in securing samples and have also furnished much valuable information relative to the various formations.

THAT colleges and technical schools constitute a vital factor in our industrial system is being realized more and more of late years. Consequently it is desirable that there should be a constant interchange of ideas between the 'school and the industries and that there should be a more intimate contact between the student and his future employer. Business and industry demand certain proficiencies and qualifications of the student and he, in turn, sees certain rewards and advantages in the industry. . In a meeting of this kind, whose primary purpose is to promote a greater intimacy between the students and those men who are active in the mining profession, it is quite fitting that each state his demnds upon the other in order to establish a common understanding. It is probable that a student, not being conversant with actual conditions in the industry, may be unfair in what he asks of his employer. Therefore criticism, constructive or other- wise, is not only accepted, but is invited.

To those familiar with ore-dressing practice, it is hardly necessary to dwell upon the importance of the jig. Within its proper sphere no substitute has been found that does the work as well or as cheaply. Its capacity is large, it requires but little attention, and the losses are small. In one form or another, it is the principal machine used in the concentration of low-grade ores, and for the separation of one metallic mineral from another; and it is almost the only machine used for the purification of coal. The present paper is a study of the action of the jig in the light of results obtained in the Lake Superior copper mills, ad at the St. Joseph Lead Co.'s dressing-works, in Missouri; and a description of experiments undertaken with the view of reproducing and isolating the conditions of jigging, in order to develop the laws which underlie the process. There are two recognized systems of jigging, the English and the Continental or German. The English system is a development of the hand-jigging formerly employed in Cornwall and other metalliferous districts of England, and introduced by English miners to this country. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Rothwell's condemnation of my paper on the International Correspondence Schools as not giving an impartial view of the whole field of such enterprises, because it was confined to the description of a single one, might be legitimate if I had undertaken or professed to do anything else than that which I was requested by the Secretary of the Institute to do—namely, to give an account of this particular institution. This is a sufficient answer to all his direct or implied criticisms upon my omission to mention either persons or organizations outside of the special limits set for me. Recognizing fully that personalities have no place whatever in the Transactions, I regret the necessity of making the following statement in answer to Mr. Rothwell's charge that I omitted to give due credit to Mr. Ewald, a former principal of the International Correspondence Schools. The Colliery Engineer School of Mines was started in 1891, and its first student was enrolled October 16, 1891. During the last quarter-century, exploration for metallic deposits in Maine has been sporadic with peaks generally coinciding with periods of high metal prices. Known cases of regional or semi-regional evaluations are few; most efforts have been local and usually intensive. On the basis of broad geologic groups, the State has been divided into five fundamental environments: ( 1) coastal metamorphic belt; (2) southern volcanic belt; (3) Silurian slate belt; ( 4) northern volcanic belt; and ( 5) Devonian slate belt. Although not restricted to these areas, exploration in recent years has been concentrated in the northern and southern volcanic belts. Notable examples of recent exploration activity, directed to sulfide minerals, include: ( 1) the Knox County nickel-copper-bearing ultramafic rocks; (2) the Harborside (Cape Rosier) copper-zinc deposit; (3) the Second Pond (Black Hawk) zinc-copper-lead-silver deposit; ( 4) the Big Hill-Barrett lead-zincsilver- copper-gold zones; (5) the Parmachenee copper-zinc belt; ( 6) the Moxie Lake nickeliferous peridotite; and (7) the Attean quartzmonzonite molybdenum-copper occurrences. The Second Pond and Harborside prospects appear to be close to production. Systematic investigations for non-metallic deposits appear to have been aimed principally toward limestone, asbestos, diatomaceous earth, and spodumene-bearing pegmatites. Advances in prospecting methods, high metal prices, a favorable business outlook, increasing cooperation from large landholders, and some discoveries support the probability of increased exploration activity in Maine during the coming decade.

During 1947, a Sinclair research team was assigned to investigate thermal methods of oil recovery. The assignment was recommended by a survey of possible research approaches to increase the amount of oil that ultimately can be recovered from oil producing reservoirs. The use of heat to stimulate oil production rates by the melting of paraffin deposited in well bores can be traced back to within one or two decades of the drilling of the Drake well. The application of heat on a larger scale has been discussed by generations of oil producers. Shortly after the turn of the century, one intrepid operator is reported to have injected steam into a Pennsylvania property. After a few weeks, he apparently became discouraged and terminated his experiment. Subsequently, the literature contains references to several well-developed techniques for supplying heat to a producing well bore to melt paraffin or to reduce the viscosity of oil contained in the formation immediately around the well bore.1.?.3.4 Some early references discuss procedures to furnish heat to the reservoir,5,6 with the injection well as the heat source, thus obligating the process to maintain the entire rock mass at a temperature above that at which the desired improvement in oil recovery would occur. Another approach to reservoir heating was reported by a group of Russian technologists in 1935.7,8,9 They definitely demonstrated that combustion can occur within the porous structure of an oil-bearing sandstone. Their field experiments, however, relied less on combustion within the rock than on heat furnished by combustion of oil supplied to the injection well bore. Ignition of the air-oil mixtures in the well bore was found very difficult, and the field tests were carried on for only short periods of time. Publication of the Russian work spurred at least one independent operator in this country to try firing an air-gas injection well, on for only short periods of time. The high-temperature Strength oF TD nickel has been observed to be dependent upon the previons thermal and mechanical history of the material. Variations in both the level and the anisotropy of strength have been observed. 01 this paper- these variations are correlated with the storing of annealing resistant elastic strain energy in the matrix of the TD nickel. An x-vay line -broadening tecknique is used to measure the maLrTis elastie strain. THE inclusion of a finely dispersed second phase into a ductile matrix has long been recognized as an extremely effective method of strengthening the matrix both at high and at low homologous temperatures. It has been found, however, that the factors which determine the high-temperature strength are not the same as those which are important at low temperatures. Below 0.5 Tm the size and distribution of the second phase particles are of prime importance in determining the strength,')' while above this temperature the strength is mainly dependent upon the previous thermal and mechanical history of the alloy,3-7 This paper is primarily concerned with explaining the response of the high-temperature mechanical strength of one of these alloys (DuPont's TD nickel) to various thermo-mechanical treatments. It will be shown that this response is not associated with the occurrence of any form of dislocation substructure within the matrix of the alloy. It has been found, however, that a correlation does exist between the elastic strain level in the matrix and the previous thermomechanical history of the alloy and that the observed changes in elastic strain level parallel the measured changes in high-temperature strength. It therefore must be concluded that variations in high-temperature strength are a direct result of the variations in elastic strain level. MATERIAL TD nickel contains approximately 2 vol pct of Tho2 in an unalloyed nickel matrix. It is formed, as a powder, by a chemical technique and this powder is compacted to form ingots which are then extruded to give 21/2-in.-diam rod. Rod of smaller diameter is prepared from the as-extruded rod by swaging. In the studies reported in this paper, 1/2-in.-diam rod was used. This rod received an anneal of 1 hr at 1100°C prior to being used in any of these studies. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Two methods were used to examine the structure of the nickel matrix of the TD nickel. These were: 1) transmission electron microscopy; 2) the analysis of the position and profile of X-ray diffraction lines obtained using the nickel matrix as the diffracting media. To prepare thin foils for electron-microscopical examination, slices of TD nickel approximately 0.050 in. thick were cut from the as-received 1/2-in.-diam rod. These were then chemically polished down to 0.045 in., rolled to 0.009 in., given a predetermined heat treatment, and thinned, using a modified Bollman technique, to provide the foils for observation. All observations were carried out at 100 kv, using a Hitachi HU-11 electron microscope. Specimens of the undeformed rod were prepared by grinding down the 0.050-in.-thick slices to approximately 0.015 in. and then thinning chemically and electrolytically to give the thin foils. The X-ray specimens were prepared by rolling 0.375-in.-thick rectangular blocks down to 0.075 in. The surfaces of the rolled material were ground flat, chemically polished to remove the layer disturbed by the grinding, and given a predetermined anneal in an inert atmosphere. They were then ground lightly to check their flatness and given a final chemical polish prior to being examined. The X-ray diffraction line profiles were measured using an automated Picker biplane diffractometer. A special specimen holder was built to allow a more accurate and reproducible positioning of the specimen. The line profiles were determined by carrying out intensity measurements at intervals of either 1/30 deg or 1/60 deg over a range of 3 deg on either side of the nickel peaks of interest. A piece of pure nickel which had been recrystallized to give a large grain size was used as a standard to give the X-ray line profile generated by a strain-free matrix. The analysis of the X-ray diffraction line profiles is a modification of that due initially to Warren and Aver-bach8and has been described elsewhere.3 This analysis gives a measurement of two parameters associated with the structure of the nickel matrix. These parameters are: 1) the size of the coherently diffracting domains within the nickel matrix; 2) the magnitude of the elastic strains in these domains. Both of these parameters are first determined in terms of a Fourier series. These series are obtained from other Fourier series which describe the measured profile of the X-ray diffraction lines. Thus, for both the coherently diffracting domain size and the elastic strain level, it is possible to plot Ft (the Fourier coefficient) against t (the term in the Fourier series), where t can be expressed in terms of a distance L and the Fourier coefficient Ft(S) (associated with elastic strain level) can be expressed in terms of the root mean square strain (e2)1/2. Thus a plot of (F 2)1/2 vs L can be obtained. Plots of this type are shown graphically in Figs. 6 and 8. Interpretation
