The election of the following officers of the Council for the fiscal year 1919-1920, was confirmed by the Council on June 12th, 1919. President, S. E. Doane; vice-president, Wm. J. The nickel-chromium alloys of importance are those containing iron and those free from iron. The most important alloys containing iron, with regard to high tonnage, are the nickel-chromium steels. Straight nickel steel was introduced about the year 1889, but it was not until 1895, when it was found that the addition of chromium greatly increased the strength and resistance to shock, that nickel-chromium steels came into use. The three types of nickel-chromium steels developed at this time were: Type 1, containing 3.,50 per cent. nickel and 1.50 per cent. chromium; type 2, containing 2.00 per cent. nickel and 1.00 per cent. chromium; and type 3, containing 1.50 per cent. nickel and 0.50 per cent. chromium.

The results of two studies into the effects of undermining offshore room and pillar workings by longwall faces are presented. The first study indicated no potential instability from undermining one level of room and pillar workings. On the basis of this it was decided to undermine two levels of room and pillar workings, again monitoring pillar stability. The results showed no signs of increased instability.

John Eliot Allen has been made acting head, dept. of geology, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, N. Mex. He had been associate professor of geology. Robert B. Anderson has accepted a position with the U. S. Steel Co., Gary, W. Va., as assistant to the superintendent, No. 2 mine. [ ] Donald L. Archibald has joined the sales dept. of the Ellicott Machine Corp., Baltimore. He formerly had been associated with the Joy Mfg. Co., St. Louis. J. C. Boswell has been appointed manager of the Fairbanks dept., United Smelting Refining & Mining Co. J. B. Metcalfe has been appointed assistant to the president. G. Howard LeFevre was elected vice-president and general manager of metal sales and R. N. Hunt, vice-president and chief geologist was elected a director. R. B. Earling, vice-president and general manager of Alaskan operations, has retired but. will con¬tinue to serve on the board of directors. J. D. Crawford has been appointed general manager of Alaskan operations.

A 3 ½ -mile asphalt mixed mat haulage road joins American Smelting & Refining Co.'s El Tiro copper pit northwest of Tucson and its Silver Bell mill. Two-axle trucks operate continuously over the road- way but the asphalt top shows none of the wash- board wear usually seen on dirt haulage roads during use by heavy vehicles. The following data cover construction of this road, and results of its use by Asarco and Isbell Construction Co., the road's builder.

The Long Island Lighting Co. has operated an extensive monitoring system for over three years. Nearly 900,000 separate pieces of information have been recorded for a land area of some 600 sq miles, 15 miles north to south by 40 miles east to west. The data are composed of about a half million sulfur dioxide measurements at various locations, 290,000 of which were by the West-Gaeke method, about 160,000 pieces of weather data, and 220,000 measurements of sulfur dioxide as emitted from each of the power plant stacks on the system, all measured on an hourly basis and stored on computor cards and tapes. The computor has been programmed to collate stack emissions, weather information, and ground level sulfur dioxide measurements. The analysis shows that emissions from tall stacks do, indeed, contribute very little to ground level sulfur dioxide. For example, LILCO shows that its Northport plant contributes less than 2 ppb, hourly annual average. They also state that the plant converted to 100% natural gas or shut down, would reduce ground level sulfur dioxide by no more than 2 ppb.
