THE mechanical properties of an alloy under given test conditions are in the main determined by the grain size and the phases present, their distribution and temperature-time dependence. Alloys intended for use at elevated temperatures, especially multiphase alloys depending upon precipitation reactions for strengthening, are particularly susceptible to changes in the phases present. Unfortunately, for modern superalloys, very little published information exists which relates the mechanical properties to the basic structural variables. The present work is an effort to do this for an alloy widely used in aircraft gas turbines and related applications, Udimet 500.* The mechanical properties inves- two heats is within the normal specifications for the alloy. However, the elements which most strongly influence the phase reactions, C, Ti, Al, and Mo, are comparable in the two heats. There was no intentional addition of boron, but normal pickup is about 0.002 pct. The vacuum-melted material was received in the form of centerless ground wrought bar stock % in. diam. PHASE STUDIES A) Methods—Two methods were used to determine the phases present: X-ray diffraction measurements on electrolytically digested residues, and microscopic examination. No single commonly used electrolyte will reveal all the phases that may be present; therefore, two complementary acids were selected: HCl and H3PO4. The necessity for this will be shown below in the results. The acid concentrations used were 10 pct HC1 in alcohol and 10 pct H3 PO4 in water. The current density was maintained below 0.1 amp per sq in. Residues were rinsed and separated by centrifuga-tion. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained in a 114 mm Debye-Scherrer type camera using cobalt radiation. From the inception of zinc retorting on a commercial scale in the United States in 1890,' the retort employed has undergone wide variations in its composition and manufacture, facilitating in part equally remarkable improvements in furnace capacities. The early day hand made clay retort was charged with carbonates or silicates or with coarse dead roasted concentrates mixed with a large proportion of charge fuel resulting in a relatively low zinc burden and fired 24 hr in direct coal fired furnaces. Its modern counterpart is fabricated in hydraulic presses from clay mixtures containing sizeable amounts of either silicon carbide or silica flour, charged with sintered flotation concentrates to more than three times the early day zinc burden and fired 24 to 48 hr in gas fired furnaces. This paper does not attempt to describe in detail the early day clay retort practice as it is well outlined in treatises by Ingalls,2 Lodin,3 Liehig,4 Hofman5 and others. A brief review of clay retort practice is presented together with a description of the major developments since 1912. Clay Retorts The Belgian type retort, both in the circular and elliptical forms, has been used almost exclusively. Typical dimensions of press made clay retorts around 1910 are shown in Table 1. Variations in these dimensions were used at different plants according to local conditions to a maximum inside diameter of 9 in. and inside length of 54 in. However, the effective heat penetration in a 24 hr firing cycle and the tendency of the retort to bend limited the retort size. Use of the elliptical vessel was an attempt to present a stronger cross-section resisting the tendency to bend and to increase the burden without increasing the depth of heat penetration. One exception to the 48-54 in. length was the 60 in. retort used as early as 1905 at Palmerton by means of supporting the last 12 in. at the butt end with a specially designed furnace back-wall. This backwall construction with the 60 in. retort had been developed and used at Bethlehem by G. G. Con-vers and A. B. DeSaulles. An attempt was made at Blende, Colo. to use even larger retorts of the Rhenish type based on European practice and requiring much higher furnace temperatures. Satisfactory plastic clays capable of withstanding these temperatures were not available, and the plant never operated successfully. PREPARATION OF BATCH Composition of the clay retort by weight was 40 to 50 pct raw clay and the balance "grog." Generally speaking the mix consisted of 7 parts plastic clay to 9 parts grog by volume. Principal source of the clay used was the Cheltenham vein—sometimes referred to as "St. Louis city clay." A typical analysis was A12O3-31.0 pct, SiO2-50.0 pct, Fe2O3-2.5 pct, MgO-0.3 pct, CaO-1.5 pct and loss on ignition 14.0 pct. At the smelter the clay was weathered whenever possible and then crushed to 0.08 in. or finer. Grog consisted of calcined adobies, cleaned retort scrap and cleaned refuse fire brick such as old furnace brick, blast furnace linings, and others. Saggers from ceramic plants and calcined flint clay were later used. The grog materials were ground to 0.12 m. or finer. Occasionally coke dust up to 10 pct of the mix was substituted for a part of the grog following European practice.² Particle size of the grog has a major influence on the retort properties—the larger the grain, the better can the retort withstand thermal shocks, resist bending at furnace temperatures and resist corrosion from slag; the smaller the grain, the lower the loss of zinc vapor through the retort walls. Grog forms the skeleton of the retort, and the clay shrinks around its grains to act as a binder. In the drying process, the grog has a stabilizing effect on the drying rate, decreasing shrinkage and giving up previously absorbed water to the surrounding clay to minimize the danger of cracking or checking.² Grog and clay were mixed through a horizontal pug mill with 10 to 20 pct water added, depending on whether the retort was to be formed by hand or mechanically, more water being required for the hand process. The batch or "mud" extruded from the pug mill was cut in convenient lengths for handling, stacked in piles or in special rooms, covered with wet burlap and allowed to "rot" or age from 1 to 8 weeks to increase plasticity. HAND MOLDING If the retort was to be molded by hand, the mud was repugged after the rotting period and given to the molders. Their molds consisted of 3 sheet iron or wood cylinders, each one third the retort length and defining the outer shape of the retort. ProUuction of crude oil in Venezuela increased from 186,134,000 bbl. in 1940 to 2~8,131,ooo bbl. in 1941, or 22.6 per cent, to establish a new all-time high for the country. While the average production for the year was 625,000 bbl. per day, production during the month of December 1941 averaged 751,000 bbl. per day, and during the last week of the year, 766,000 bbl. per day. Production from the Lake Maracaibo basin averaged 454,000 bbl. per day during the year, or 72 per cent of the total for the country, compared with 73 per cent of the total produced in 1940. Drilling during the year was approximately on the same scale as in 1940, with 438 wells completed in 1941 as compared with 429 the year before. Exploratory completions decreased from 18 in 1940 to 6 in 1941. Of the drilling operations in 1941, 56 per cent was concentrated in the Lake Maracaibo basin and 44 per cent in eastern Venezuela, success being 98 per cent in the Lake basin and 83 per cent in the east. Successful completions for the country as a whole amounted to 92 per cent of the total wells drilled. Exploratory drilling in 1941 resulted in the discovery of three new fields, all in eastern Venezuela; viz., Guara, about II km. to the northeast of the Oficina field but on a separate structure; Santa Rosa, which is east of El Roble field on a structure forming a part of the major Santa -Ana- San Joaquin-El Roble uplift; and Santa Barbara, which is southwest of the Jusepin field on an extension of the main Jusepin anticline. At the close of the year three wildcats were drilling, all of which showed prospects of obtaining production; that is, Mercedes No, 2 in central Guarico, Las Ollas No. I on the Anzoategui-Guarico border near the town of Zaraza, and Quiamare No. I in Anzoategui northeast of the town of San Mateo. In spite of heavy withdrawals and the resultant natural decline in the potentials of older producing areas, new drilling during the year increased the potential production of the country from an estimated 780,000 bbl. per day at the end of 1940 to an estimated 810,000 bbl. per day at the end of 1941, or approximately 4 per cent. Since domestic consumption of petroleum products is insignificant compared with total production, exports of crude and products during the year increased in line with production. Crude exports totaled 196,800,000 bbl., compared with 158,400,-000 bbl. in 1940, and exports of products were 26,100,000 bbl., compared with 21,900,000 bbl. the year before. Exports of crude from Venezuela to the United States amounted to 36,500,000 bbl. In addition, about 2,200,000 bbl. was imported in bond into the United States for transfer to Canada. Total refining capacity of the country in 1941 was approximately 125,000 bbl. per day, including a crude-conversion plant with a capacity of 32,000 bbl. per day, capable of making fuel oil only. This paper is presented as a suniniary report of the use of well gas composition correlations obtained from mass spectrometer recordings as a means of identification and determination of reservoir continuity. Conventional methods for detecting composition differences are en-pensive, elaborate, and difficult to obtain. This excludes the use of extensive composition data for most applications. During recent years the mass spec-trometer has come into general use as an analytical tool in petroleum refineries. The use of mass spectrometer composition patterns ir~ characterizing or "finger-printing" the produced gas from a reservoir, presents a novel method for correlatitlg gas samples from well to well. The mass spectrometer provides a trace similar to an electric log. having peaks which represent the abuntlnnce of certaitz hydrocarbons in the well gas sample. Without going further into the detailed analysis the idea has been advanced that these traces or patterns could be used as a means of identifying a particular natural gas. This theory has proven to be essentially correct. The mass spectrometer pattern method is simple and cheap as COi?7pared to other standard methods. It greatly facilitates the solution of reservoir and geological problems in which correlation of well gas Com-positions is a factor. Specific field applications have been made. This paper concerns the results obtained in 465 individual gas analyses from 35 fields and 77 res- ervoirs. In a number of cases it has been found that such data have been extremely valuable in the determination of reservoir continuity. In at least one case, the method was a valuable contribution in tracing a reservoir from sand to sand in a coinplex fnulted field involving n11rnerous gas reservoirs. Field applications are presented to illustrate the possibilities of the method at the present stage of developnient and to stimulate the ernployrnent of this new approach by geologists and petroleum engineers in the industry. INTRODUCTION Identification of producing horizons and the determination of reservoir continuity are often a problem in those areas where dome structures and highly faulted sands are encountered. To complicate the picture further, there may be numerous sands, one on top of the other which dip and diverge in different directions. Even though it may be possible to develop some solutions to the preceding problems on the basis of the geological and reservoir data on hand. it is readily recognized that substantiating data based on independent methods would he extremely valuable. It has been found through field studies that correiation of well gas composition can be used to advantage in the geological and engineering study of a complex reservoir identification problem. METHOD FOR COMPARISON AND CORRELATION OF WELL GAS SAMPLES Since a large number of well gas samples are required in a gas identification or reservoir con- tinuity problem, it is necessary that a method of analysis be employed which can detect differences in composition readily and inexpensively. Although detection would be possible by means of low temperature fractional distillation (POD) analpsis, the method requires a relatively large sample and is comparatively slow and expensive to run. The mass spectrometer affords an inexpensive and precise analysis of small well gas samples taken at the surface which are about 1/300 as large as a POD sample. These samples can be obtained by regular field personnei and shipped to the spectrometer for analysis. It is, therefore, a practical approach to the problem. A typical record from the mass spectrometer is illustrated in Fig. I. The peaks on the record represent the abundance of ions produced from the different hydrocarbon molecules making up the gas sam-ple. In well gas comparisons only five peaks are employed, since the other peaks are formed from the same gas molecules and furnish no additional information. The five peaks used represent the abundance of methane, propane, ethane, butane and heavier, and oxygen. They are referred to respectively as the 16, 29, 30, 43, and 32 peaks. The present-day Northumberland gold mine is one of the deposits generally characterized as a Carlin-type occurrence. It lies at the crest of the Toquima Range in Nye County near the center of Nevada. Gold mineralization occurs in two modes, in argillaceous and in silicified limestones, and is generally very fine-grained or micron gold. The Northumberland district has had a history that is typical of many western gold districts: minor production prior to World War II and intermittent exploration thereafter until a combination of geological insight, improved economics, and the advent of heap leach technology created the Northumberland gold mine. Nye County, Nevada, was sparsely populated and little explored in the early years of the settlement of the west; the Northumberland district was not established until 1866. Initial interest was in silver and the district operated as a very small producer for the next seventy years. The disseminated gold occurrences in silicified limestones were recognized and Northumberland Mining Co. was organized to develop the property in the late 1930s. Northumberland Mining Co. actually conducted drilling operations (over 200 drill holes) and mined from small open pits in the silicified limestones. They ultimately produced almost 936 kg (33,000 oz) gold before being shut down by War Production Board Order L-208 in 1942. After World War II gold mining activities were essentially nil for over a decade due to the poor economics of gold production. The property was, however, a known gold producer and attracted recurrent exploration attention. About 45 holes were drilled under the direction of Peter Joralemon for private interests between 1959 and 1963. Next Kerr McGee drilled about 25 holes during 1963 and 1964. Some- what later, in 1968, Homestake drilled 20 holes. The property was then acquired by Idaho Mining Co. which drilled about 30 more holes between 1972 and 1974. By this time the Northumberland mine was becoming somewhat shopworn with over 300 holes drilled. Interest in gold prospects was increasing substantially in Nevada, how- ever, due to rising gold prices in late 1974, and several companies were interested in continuing exploration at Northumberland. In 1975 Cyprus Mines Corp. was successful in obtaining a joint venture arrangement with Idaho Mining Co. for further exploration and development of the property. The overall Cyprus exploration program was under the direction of James G. Hansen, Vice President Exploration. The geologist recommending acquisition of Northumberland was Peter E. Chapman who reported to Joseph E. Worthington, Manager of U.S. Exploration for Cyprus. The basis for selection of the Northumberland mine as an exploration target for Cyprus by Chapman was essentially prior knowledge of regional and 16cal geology and of the mine. Exploration for the next few years was directed by Chapman under the supervision of Worthington. During 1975 and 1976 rotary and check core drilling were conducted that indicated that a substantial Carlin-type or disseminated, low-grade gold deposit occurred in two separate bodies. Drilling was based on geologic mapping and rock chip geochemical sampling. Both ore zones were reflected at the surface as gold and arsenic anomalies in rock chips. Heap leach tests attempted in 1977 were aborted by a flash flood, but were completed in 1978. Engineering studies occupied the next couple of years until the property achieved production in the fall of 1981. It is now producing by open-pit mining with gold recovery by heap leaching and cyanide extraction at a rated capacity of approximately 2722 t/d (3000 stpd) ore. Metal recovery has been projected (probably conservatively) at 5 10 kg/a (18,000 oz per year) gold and 1.6 Mg/a (59,000 oz per year) silver. Single-crystal films of boron have been prepared by thermal reduction of purified BCl3 with subsequent deposition of boron onto oriented silicon substrates. The structural properties of films prepared under various experimental conditions have been determined by light microscopy and "grazing-" angle electron-diffraction analysis. An orientation relationship is proposed for silicon and a-rhombo-heclral boron which can be described as: (111)Si (112)B; [110]Si [110]B ElEMENTAL boron is known to have a high energy gap* and consequently has potential value as a high- *Energy gaps of 1.35 to 1.55 ev1-3 and 2.0 ev4 are reported for ß-rhombohedra1 and a-rhombohedra1 boron, respectively. temperature semiconductor.5 Exploitation of this property, however, has been hampered by the unavailability of pure, single-crystal boron. Two recent symposia6,7 have treated the subjects of purification, crystallization, crystal structure, and properties of boron and provide a foundation for further investigation in these areas. The structure, lattice constants, and observed ranges of stability for four reported polymorphs of boron8°12 are listed in Table I. The rhombohedral structures are generally accepted as true polymorphs whereas the tetragonal structures are believed to be transient. Most currently available single crystals of boron are grown by Czochralski and floating-zone methods. Unfortunately, these crystals generally contain numerous defects and are highly strained as a result of the polymorphic transformations and thermal contractions which accompany cooling. Recently, Armington, Potter, and Tanner13 have reported the formation of single-crystal films of boron on silicon single-crystal substrates through thermal reduction of BC13 by hydrogen. Boron E. T. Hanscom Field, Bedford, Mass. formed at temperatures near 1000°C was identified as the a-rhombohedra1 form, consistent with expectation. The present paper describes a continuation of this work with specific reference to characterization of the structural features of the deposited boron films. The ultimate goal of this program is to produce large-area single-crystal films of a-rhombohedra1 boron to be used for electrical and optical studies by other workers. PREPARATION OF BORON FILMS The experimental procedure of preparing thin films is similar to that described by Theuerer14 for the epitaxial growth of silicon by thermal reduction of SiC14 and has already been described as applied to the preparation of boron thin films.13 Briefly, a mixture of BCl3 vapor and dry hydrogen is passed over a heated silicon substrate. Thermal reduction of the BC13 allows deposition of boron on the substrate. The substrates were {111}-oriented, single-crystal silicon. Ground support at the Thompson Mine emphasizes scaling, rock bolting and wire mesh screening on the backs and walls of all underground stoping and development areas and also full column grouted cable bolting in the bulk mining areas. This paper describes the equipment for the point anchored rock bolts as well as the full column cable bolts. Modifications in design and testing of all components and procedures has ensured a safe and efficient method of ground support for the mining conditions existing at the Thompson Mine.

THE stability and permanence of any structural material used in aircraft are of paramount importance. The spontaneous hardening, or age-hardening; which takes place in some of the aluminum alloys under ordinary conditions of temperature and atmosphere, is accompanied by an increase in tensile strength and proportional limit and a decrease in elongation or ductility. Within the last few years the introduction of a number of strong and ductile casting alloys led to a study by the Materiel Division, Air Corps, of the permanence of the physical properties in several of these alloys. It has been found that even though some alloys have good properties directly after casting or heat treatment, they are not satisfactory for stressed parts that require a combination of strength and ductility. It has also led to the conclusion that all alloys that can be hardened by artificial aging-heating in a temperature range below 170° C. (340° F.)-will harden spontaneously if allowed to stand for a sufficient length of time. It follows that, in aircraft work where the factors of safety are limited on account of the necessity of keeping the weight of the structures as low as possible consistent with their safe operation, the properties of the alloys in the stable or final condition should be used as a basis for design rather than the properties obtained on the material directly after casting. The work of Wilm in Germany, Hanson and Gayler at the National Physical Laboratory in England, and Merica, Jeffries, and others in the United States, has shown that the spontaneous hardening is characteristic to a greater or less extent in all aluminum-base alloys in which the solubility in the solid state of the alloying constituents decreases with the temperature. It has been shown that, by heating to a temperature as near as possible to the melting point of the material and soaking at that temperature for a sufficient length of time and then quenching or cooling rapidly, a maximum amount of the soluble constituents can be retained in solution and the condition of maximum hardening effect upon aging can be obtained. Also, in ordinary sand and chill castings, without heat treatment, a sufficient amount of the alloying constituents is held in solution to cause important changes in the final physical properties.

IF THE engineer is to go into politics, as I think he should, I believe the curriculum of every engineering school should be amended to include a good stiff course in public speaking. My observation has been that the engineer in private conversation can scintillate as brightly as a life insurance agent or an oil stock salesman, but before an audience, with rare exceptions, he is a total loss. He will not get up and talk. He hides his light under a bushel, and sits on the bushel as dumb as an oyster. I have seen meetings of the Utah Section at which some topic of general interest to the members was up for discussion, and where an animated debate was the logical thing to expect. After the chairman states the subject and invites discussion, there is dense silence. Finally a member, bolder than the rest, gets up and with trembling voice and knees makes a motion. The motion carries, the meeting adjourns, and then the members gather into groups and begin to discuss the question seriously -and intelligently, giving cogent arguments on either side and embellishing their remarks with appropriate or inappropriate epithets illustrations and figures of speech. Now, I am not pleading for more speechmaking. The good Lord knows we have too much of this great American indoor sport already. But I think every man ought to be able and ready to express his opinions at the proper time. Some men have a reputation for wisdom because they do not talk much. We speak of the wise old owl because she never speaks, but in my opinion the owl's reputation for wisdom is vastly overrated. silence is more apt to be a cloak for stupidity than for wisdom. The person who has ideas can- not exert any influence by keeping them locked up in his own mind. The great motive force of the world is not muscle, but ideas, and ideas in order to get in their work must be released.

Consideration was given to simple tests which could be performed on rocks to give a measure of rock drillability. Various methods of breaking rocks were considered and the hardness test developed by Schreiner was selected for this study. The test involves application of an increasing load on the rock face through a flat-faced cylindrical punch until rupture occurs. Test results show that hardness is a good measure of the breaking strength of rocks. Useful relationships are shown to exist between hardness and other physical quantities such as specific disintegration, Young's modulus and sonic velocity. Specific disintegration (volume of rock broken per unit of work input) provides a possible means of comparing the effectiveness of other methods of rock breakage. The relationship between hardness and sonic velocity may be very significant for it may be possible to deduce rock drillability from sonic log data. provided that a mineralogical factor is taken into account. TO test further the results of the work, laboratory drilling tests were performed which closely simulated down-hole pressure conditions. Correlations of drilling results with rock hardness measurements were quite good. It was concluded that rock hardness, as measured in the laboratory or as deduced from sonic logs, could be used in relations for predicting rock drilling performance. INTRODUCTION Drillability of rocks cannot be defined in an absolute manner by a single quantity or measured by a single test. Resistance of rock to drilling depends to a large extent upon the means used for rock destruction. This complicates drillability classification of rocks for there may be as many classifications as there are methods of rock breakage without known functional relations between them. The objective of this work was to develop. in terms of rock destruction behavior, means of selecting the best drilling method for a given rock or the conditions for optimum output from a given drilling method. ANALYSIS OF ROCK DESTRUCTION TESTS Gauthier and Baron' have reviewed the many test methods which have been developed for determining the resistance of rocks to breakage. These include drilling tests, punch tests, scratch tests, resistance to shock, wear tests, etc. A standard drilling test might be to determine the time required to drill a standard depth (1/16 in.) in a rock using a bi-cone microbit (1 1/4-in. diameter) when a standard load (417 Ib) is applied at a standard speed of bit rotation (110 rpm). From the standpoint of similarity, the results of microbit drilling tests would seem to be most representative of the several methods suggested above. However, evaluation of drilling performance by this method is only qualitative and cannot be applied directly to actual drilling conditions. Punch tests basically measure rock hardness. Punches of various shapes and sizes, including small cones for Vickers' and Knoop's tests, the wedge for Epstein's test and the right circular cylinder for Schreiner's test, have been used. Results of these tests lead to a quantitative hardness classification which would seem to be related to the resistance of rock to bit-tooth penetration. Scratch tests are related to the resistance of rocks to abrasion such as would be encountered in drilling with diamonds. Either the width of the scratch obtained at a fixed load or the load required to give a scratch of a fixed width may be used to evaluate surface hardness of the rock. This should be related to the resistance of the rock to wear. The above tests, and probably many others. give relative measurements of the breakage or destruction characteristics of rocks. There is no direct relation between results of these tests and the drillability of rocks. Also, the tests each measure different quantities which have different dimensions and they do not permit direct comparison of numerical values. As one step in rectifying the above difficulties. it is proposed that the results of all test methods be expressed in terms of volume of rock destroyed per unit of work required; this is referred to as "specific disintegration". Test results may then be reported in a form which shows both a classification of rocks in regard to each method and a comparison of methods with regard to each rock. The disadvantage in using specific disintegration is the difficulty of measuring this quantity with accuracy. The volume of rock damage is difficult to measure. as is the true value of work input. The transformation characteristics are found to resemble a similar binary alloy. The differences are due to the alpha iron particles. While strength properties of the isothermally transformed alloys are high, ductility is low, resulting in high notch sensitivity. The elastic modulus can be varied widely and correlates with strength. Abnormal grain growth sometimes occurs. A CONSIDERABLE amount of work has been done on the isothermal transformation of high purity aluminum bronzes using the methods pioneered by Davenport and Bain.' The first isothermal study of these alloys was made by Smith and Lind-lief,' but more recently Mack", " and Klier and Grymko5 have continued the work. In commercial aluminum bronzes, one or more elements are always added to refine the ß grain size and to improve the mechanical properties. The effect of these elements on the isothermal transformation has not been reported in the literature. No systematic study of the properties of isother-mally transformed aluminum bronzes has apparently been reported, although adequate information is available on their properties after more conventional heat treatments. The fact that a eutectoid alloy will reject face-centered cubic a during isothermal transformation at appropriate temperatures2'" warrants investigation of the properties of such structures. Another cogent reason for determination of properties is the fact that the modulus of elasticity of the eutectoid alloy varies widely with the nature of the heat treatment." Preliminary experiments7 indicated that a high purity eutectoid alloy would not give reproducible results in property determinations because of ex- cessive ß grain growth during heat treatment, a single ß grain frequently occupying the entire cross-section of a standard test bar. For this reason a commercial aluminum bronze containing iron as a grain growth inhibitor was used. The isothermal transformation diagram of the alloy was first determined. On this basis, the heat treatments necessary to produce representative structures were selected and the properties determined. Material A commercial alloy (Ampco Grade 20) of the following composition was used: Cu, 83.68 pct; Al, 12.31 pct; Fe, 3.68 pct; Ni, 0.28 pct; and Mn, 0.03 pct. This alloy proved to be very close to the eutectoid composition and may be compared with the accepted value of 11.8 pct A1 in the binary Cu-A1 system. Comparison is valid only because of the "negative replacement effect" of the iron? Since traces of excess y² are present, the alloy is slightly hyper-eutectoid. The material was received in the form of 3/4 in. round, hot extruded bars. Specimens of approximately ? in. thickness were cut from this stock and drilled to allow suspension in the salt bath. The structure of the as-received material varied from 5 to 40 pct a + y2* in a matrix of ß. The amount of a + y² present was dependent upon the ß grain size of the extruded material. Drilling muds are complex colloidal systems. In an effort to analyze the physical properties that affect their performance at high temperature, an investigation was made of the hydrothermal stability of the monoionic hydrogen, calcium and magnesium forms of montmorillonite and attapulgite. Samples were heated to 400°1F in a simple autoclave and analyzed for cation exchange capacity, c-axis X-ray diffraction spacing and pH factor us sodium hydroxide titration dependence. Out of the six monoionic clay minerals tested, calcium montmorillonite and magnesium attapulgite showed the least base exchange capacities and were relatively unaffected to heat. It is concluded that, of the six clays studied, these two clays were the most suitable forms for use in drilling fluids. INTRODUCTION The drilling of deep wells is dependent upon the drilling mud, and problems frequently arise concerning the effect of mud temperature and prolonged heating. Drilling muds are complex colloidal systems. In an effort to analyze their behavior in deep, hot boreholes, it was thought desirable in this investigation to study suspension of pure, monoionic montmorillonite and attapulgite clays before and after hydrothermal heating. Chemically, clays are hydrated aluminum silicates, such as montmorillonites and attapulgites. The structure of montmorillonite is composed of units made up of two silica tetrahedral sheets with a central alumina octahedral sheet. Attapulgite consists of double silica chains running parallel to the c-axis with the chains linked together at their longitudinal edges. The apexes of the tetrahedrons in successive chains point in opposite direc-tions.4,7,10 One of the most important characteristics of clay minerals is their property of sorbing certain anions and cations and retaining them in exchangeable state. The property of exchange capacity is measured in terms of milliequivalents (meq) per 100 gm of clay. The cation-exchange capacities are taken at pH 7 from titration curves which show the relation between pH and milliequivalents of added NaoH.9,11 The following are causes of cation exchange: (1) broken bonds around the edges of the silica alumina units would give rise to unsatisfied charges, which would be balanced by adsorbed cations; (2) substitution within the lattice structure of trivalent aluminum for quadrivalent silicon in the tetrahedral sheet and of ions of lower valence; and (3) the hydrogen of exposed hydroxyls may be replaced by a cation which would be exchangeable. The primary techniques employed to study the effects of hydrothermal treatment were titration curves and X-ray diffraction analyses. Titration curves were useful in characterizing the nature of the clay mineral surface and the stability of the various samples to attack by acid or alkali before and after hydrothermal treatment. X-ray diffraction analyses were used to determine changes in the nature and crystal structure of the minerals present and to determine the cations in exchange positions on the montmorillonite samples. EXPERMENTAL PROCEDURE PREPARATION OF SAMPLES Selected samples of Wyoming bentonite and attapulgite clay from mines along the Georgia and Florida border were purified by centrifugation to remove all particles larger than 2 microns. In preparing magnesium attapulgite, first a 1.00-normal solution of magnesium acetate was prepared. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 7.0 by adding magnesium oxide. One hundred grams of attapulgite clay were mixed in a blender for 30 minutes with the magnesium acetate solution. The attapulgite solution was left overnight, and then filtered in a Buchner funnel. The suspension was leached with further quantity of magnesium acetate solution and then washed with distilled water for 20 days, after which the filtrate was free from magnesium ions. The spontaneous hardening, or age-hardening, which takes place in some of the aluminum alloys under ordinary conditions of temperature and atmosphere, is accompanied by an increase in tensile strength and proportional limit and a decrease in elongation or ductility. Within the last few years the introduction of a number of strong and ductile casting alloys led to a study by the Materiel Division, Air Corps, of the permanence of the physical properties in several of these alloys. It has been found that even though some alloys have good properties directly after casting or heat treatment, they are not satisfactory for stressed parts that require a combination of strength and ductility. It has also led to the conclusion that all alloys that can be hardened by artificial aging—heating in a temperature range below 170" C. (340" F.)—will harden spontaneously if allowed to stand for a sufficient length of time. It follows that, in aircraft work where the factors of safety are limited on account of the necessity of keeping the weight of the structures as low as possible consistent with their safe operation, the properties of the alloys in the stable or final condition should be used as a basis for design rather than the properties obtained on the material directly after casting. The work of Wilm in Germany, Hanson and Gayler at the National Physical Laboratory in England, and Merica, Jeffries, and others in the United States, has shown that the spontaneous hardening is characteristic to a greater or less extent in all aluminum-base alloys in which the solubility in the solid state of the alloying constituents decreases with the temperature. It has been shown that, by heating to a temperature as near as possible to the melting point of the material and soaking at that temperature for a sufficient length of time and then quenching or cooling rapidly, a maximum amount of the soluble constituents can be retained in solution and the condition of maximum hardening effect upon aging can be obtained. Also, in ordinary sand and chill castings, without heat treatment, a sufficient amount of the alloying constituents is held in solution to cause important changes in the final physical properties.

ON the 6th of February 1684, Dr. Martin Lister mentioned at a meeting of the Royal Society1 that "brass is magnetical," and promised to give an account of that assertion at some other time. He repeated his promise but never fulfilled it, and it was left for William Arderon2 to show, in 1958, that brass could be made magnetic by hammering and that it would retain polarity after magnetizing. Twenty-seven years later Cavallo3,4 examined the matter in great detail. Working with cast calamine brass, he showed that it could be made magnetic by hammering and nonmagnetic by subsequent annealing at a red heat. He found that annealing at a very high temperature caused the samples to lose their magnetic quality permanently, even after subsequent cold-working, but that remelting and cold-working restored it. He encountered some samples of brass that could not be rendered magnetic by any treatment. Experiments in which these were remelted with iron additions gave negative results, and Cavallo concluded that iron impurity was not the cause of the magnetism. He worked with 50-grain (3-gram) samples melted under the blowpipe, hence cooled very quickly. Bennet5 made whole crucible charges from copper and zinc, and found the resulting brass ingots to be magnetic only when iron had been added and then only after cold-working. All these observations applied to material in the cast condition, in which coring would produce a continuous spectrum of composition and cooling would result in varying degrees of precipitation. This knowledge of the subject seems to have been forgotten in the nineteenth century. The older brass was made by the calamine process and frequently contained iron in amounts of 0.5 per cent or more, absorbed from the impure ore with which the copper and charcoal were heated in making the brass. When metallic zinc became available in commercial quantities, calamine brass gradually disappeared, and with it the knowledge of its curious magnetic properties. Only when sensitive apparatus replaced the compass needle of the earlier investigators could the effects be detected in relatively pure metal. The effect of cold-working in inducing ferromagnetism was rediscovered by Bitters in 1930 in a sample of impure copper, and this was confirmed by Lowance and Constant,9 Honda and Shimizu, 10,11 and others. In the same year, Tammann and Oelsen12 showed that copper-rich copper-iron alloys after certain heat-treatments could be rendered ferromagnetic or made more strongly ferromagnetic by cold-rolling. Kussman and Seeman13 showed that the change of susceptibility of relatively pure copper on cold-working was associated with the iron content, and concluded that actual precipitation of iron was caused by cold-working, which is a satisfactory theory until one considers the improbably high rate of diffusion that this would involve. Equilibrium H2S/H2 ratios were determined as functions of temperature (500o to 900°C) and composition in a hydrogen-circulation apparatus. Within the composition range studied there exists a two-phase region of "Zr3S4" and "ZrS2". The upper composition limit of this two-phase region is hounded by a disulfide phase and is practically constant over the temperature range investigated. The lower composition limit of this two-phase region is bounded a "Zr3S4 " phase and varies appreciably with tem- perature. The upper composition limit of the homogeneous region of the disulfide phase is not definitely determined, but it appears to he bounded by the stoichiometric composition of ZrS2. The lower composition limit of the homogeneous region of the Zr3S4 phase could not he determined due to the extremely low values of the equilibrium H2S/H2 ratios. Various thermodynamic quantities are evaluated from the data. PUBLISHED free-energy data for the Zr-S system are practically nonexistent. Strotzer, Biltz, and Meisel1 measured the sulfur pressures for the reaction 2ZrS2(s) + S2(g) = ZrS3(s) in the temperature range 783" to 874°C. The average heat of reaction calculated from the temperature dependence of the sulfur pressure is -47 keal. It should be noted, however, that according to these investigators, the two-phase region as determined by sulfur pressure constancy under isothermal conditions extended from approximately ZrS2, 3 to ZrS2.7. From consideration of X-ray data they concluded that the homogeneous regions of the disulfide and trisulfide phases are ZrS1.8-2.0 and ZrS2.8-3.2, respectively. Hahn and coworkers2 have made a structure study of the zirconium sulfide phases. They summarized the zirconium sulfide phases as follows: the compounds ZrS3 and ZrS2 with narrow homogeneous regions, a "Zr3S4" phase with a homogeneous region roughly within the limits of ZrSl.5 and ZrSo.9, the compounds ZrS and Zr4S3, and a "Zr3S2" phase with a homogeneous region within the limits ZrSo.8 and ZrSo.5. It is noted that the compounds ZrS and Zr4S3 are only formed in the gaseous state through sublimation of a phase which has the approximate composition of the compound. This paper describes the determination of the stability of the zirconium sulfide phases by a hydrogen-reduction method in which hydrogen is circulated over the heated sulfide until equilibrium is attained. WHEN ore was discovered on the Tintic Standard property in the spring of 1916, new developments were immediately started both north and south of that property, on the supposition that in East Tintic the ore would be found to occur in northerly trending channels, similar to those so characteristic of the older camp. But 9 years of developments have failed to establish the existence of such a channel. This is due undoubtedly to important differences in the geology of the two camps, that were not recognized, and is indicative of the danger in the general tendency toward interpreting the geology of East Tintic too strictly in terms of that of the older camp. It should not be forgotten that while the two sections have had practically the same geological history, the net results of a long series of geologic processes have developed in them conditions that differ so widely and in so many particulars that the necessity of regarding them as essentially different districts seems apparent. In an effort to emphasize this fact, this paper is devoted chiefly to a comparison of the geological conditions as found in the two camps and is addressed more particularly to those familiar with the geology of the Tintic district. Following a short description of the several ore discoveries and of the Tintic Standard mine is a brief discussion of the evidence of ore channels in East Tintic. "No true conception of the Park City mining district can be obtained without first giving consideration to the part it has played as a consistent producer of mineral wealth. Its position in this regard is almost unique in the annals of a lead silver camp. For over fifty years it has been a continuous producer of lead and silver and for twenty years it has added to the world's supply of zinc. Few camps with its productive history are so little known to the mining fraternity for the reason that its life has never been punctuated by periods of ""boom"" which serve to attract general attention, neither has it been the field of operation for promoters who temporarily focus attention upon their scene of action. Its history is one of legitimate mining operations. These were at first carried on by a number of smaller companies. A period of consolidation followed and at the present time the entire production of the camp is in the hands of two major companies and one smaller company. These are flanked by a number of prospecting properties, which are at this time actively engaged in the search for ores and later events will doubtless put some of them in the producing class.A technical discussion of the ore occurrence and mining operations in the camp will be the subject of a paper to be read before this meeting of the Institute. The mission of this article is to supply a ""Baedeker"" where Baedeker is lacking.The town of Park City is a typical, up-to-date, western mining camp which owes its existence as a town of 4,500 inhabitants solely to the mining industry. The camp is located 7,000 feet above sea level, thirty-two miles east of Salt Lake City. It is situated on the Victory Highway seven miles from its junction with the Lincoln Highway and has the benefit of excellent automobile communication with the metropolis of the state. Both the Denver and Rio Grande and the Union Pacific Railroads give daily train service to the camp and effectively solve the transportation problems of the mining companies."

THE development of a proper treatment for shells in connection with war contracts has brought to our attention the fact that the temperature of the liquid bath in which steel is quenched has a decided influence on the speed of cooling in the case of some liquids and very little in the case of others. Widely different physical results have been obtained by the use of water spray, water immersion, and oil immersion and further experiment has shown that the quenching effect of water used as a spray or an immersion varies greatly with the temperature of the water. The present experiments were undertaken with the idea of obtaining information of a quantitative nature regarding the quenching properties of a number of liquids used commercially in hardening steel. The general features of such cooling media are common knowledge and in the literature may be found records of numerous attempts to evaluate the cooling power of a liquid when used as a quenching bath. Much, if not most, of the data given on this subject is in the form of a simple statement of the time required for a certain heated mass to cool between two arbitrary temperatures when immersed in the liquid, quite regardless of the path of the temperature change. Our own purpose has been somewhat different. We have attempted to isolate that property of these. liquids having to do with their ability to absorb heat rapidly, as distinct from the behavior of a considerable mass when exposed to different thermal environments. More specifically, from the data obtained through autographically recorded cooling curves of a small standard mass quenched under various conditions, we have tried to analyze the mechanism of heat absorption by the several liquids, measure the changes in its rate as a function of the temperature of the surface of transference, and ascertain the influence of the temperature of -the liquid itself upon both.
