DEFINITE improvement in its accident fatality rate in the coal-mining industry was recorded during 1941, based on preliminary figures for the period from January through October. Total production during this ten-month period was approximately 91 percent of the total production in all of 1940. The ten-month accident rate for both bituminous and anthracite mining in 1941 was 2.15 killed per million tons of coal mined, compared with a rate of 2.66 for the full year of 1940. The bituminous rate decreased from 2.55 in 1940 to 1.99 in ten months of 1941, and the anthracite rate from 3.62 to 3.53 in similar periods. The decrease is more apparent for the bituminous branch of the industry, as the high figure in 1940 was due to seven major disasters which brought death to 276 men. The same number of major explosions during ten months of 1941 caused only 64 lives to be lost. The severity of the explosions has been lower this year but a definite need still exists for reduction in this type of accident.

LIBERIAN ore has been called the richest iron ore mined in the world, and thus far, the output from the Liberian Mining Co.'s Bomi Hills mine has lived up to its reputation. Iron content has been variously given as 68.47 pct to 68.825 pct. A recent United Nations survey gave it first place, surplanting the previously top-rated Swedish product. The first shipment of Liberian ore to the United States reached Baltimore in June, 1952 and went into blast furnaces at Republic Steel's Cleveland plant, where excellent results were reported. The physical make-up of the ore was hard, dense lumps, free of fines and with ideal size distribution. The Bomi hills mines were scheduled to be in full operation by the end of 1952. At the close of 1951, 200,000 tons of ore had been delivered to Baltimore. Liberian Mining Co. states that production is about 90,000 tons of ore per month at present. Between 1200 and 1500 men are employed at the mine site, with about 25 pct of them Americans. The Bomi Hill project was financed with the aid of the Export Import bank, which loaned Liberia Mining part of the sum needed to initiate and put the development into production. No definite expansion plans are in the making but extensive diamond drilling is being pursued. Original estimates of annual production for Bomi Hills ran in the neighborhood of 1.5 million tons, but the figure is no longer applicable. Liberia's potential as an iron producing country has been known for a long time, but the physical obstacles in the way of large scale production were such as to prohibit even contemplation of the project. Until recent years, the only route from the mine site to Monrovia was a foot trail. Once to the coast, over swamps and unbridged rivers, the ore was still useless because of the lack of loading facilities. Transportation Solved One problem was solved with the completion of the artificial harbor at Monrovia. Harbor construction was well under way when the mine project began in 1948. The island location of Monrovia also made the building of a bridge across the St. Paul River necessary. The 980 ft reinforced concrete structure, accommodating railroad and vehicular traffic, was opened in 1949. Meanwhile, preliminary work on railroad construction started. Grading was completed quickly. In April, 1951, the first train made the trip from Monrovia to the Bomi Hills. About half of the cost of the entire project went into railroad construction. More than 2200 men, often forced to resort to primitive methods, were engaged in clearing a path through the heavy forests between the mine and port. Swamps were drained and filled, and bridges, including the William V. S. Tubman, named for the Liberian President, were constructed. At the port, a Robbins Conveyor Belt Co., orehandling plant was installed. Ships can be loaded from the stockpile at the rate of 3000 tons per hr and vessels need spend only one day in port. Liberian Mining is operating under an 80 year lease, giving the company exclusive mining rights to all minerals, except gold, platinum, and diamonds, within a 40 mile radius of Bomi Hills. The contract provides a fixed royalty to the Liberian Government of five cents per ton of ore extracted, and a premium -based on the New York market price for Bessemer-grade pig iron. In process and plant simulation, more reliable prediction of industrial results and evaluation of data for designing purposes may be attained by the combined use of (a) modeling and simulation of ore characteristics and (b) modeling and simulation of integrated plant operations. The systems for modeling and simulation of ore characteristics are discussed as well as the conditions in which their use may be necessary (complex structure of the ore-body and variability of the ore fed to the plant). Two examples, for coal and bauxite run-of-mine (ROM), are reported. The procedure of linking the process unit models and the approaches for the solution of integrated systems are indicated. A general-purpose program for the simulation of integrated plant operations is described, and some examples of its use are reported.

The mines of the United States Coal & Coke Co. are located in the Pocahontas coal field, in McDowell County, West Virginia. Twelve plants have been opened and equipped, of which, by reason of the present business depression, only nine are now in operation. These twelve plants serve eighteen mines; some of the plants having several openings, in either the same seam or in different seams, tributary to the same tipple. Only nine of these mines are now being worked at the plants in operation. Construction work was begun in 1902, and coal from the first three plants started was shipped in December of that year. An additional plant was opened in 1903, two in 1904, two in 1905, two in 1907 and the last two in 1908. On Jan. 1, 1915, the plants have been in operation an average period of 8.8 years. The rules of the company, which have been in operation since work was first begun, are similar to those in use by the H. C. Frick Coke Co. at its mines in Pennsylvania, in which " Safety First" was incorporated as early as 1907; and it has always been the policy of both companies to look carefully after the safety of their employees. Although the field is an extension of the old Pocahontas field, the mines, located upon a new branch railroad, are away by themselves, and, as is usual in such cases, the class of labor attracted at first was temporary in character. The rapid development of the mines required the employment of many new men and officials each year; and, while the accident record from 1904 to 1909 was as good as the average of the field, it was felt to be not as good as it could be made, and a determined campaign was inaugurated for preventing accidents of all kinds. Fig. 1 shows the tonnage of coal produced per fatality, both total and for inside accidents only, at our mines; the tonnage per fatality of all West Virginia mines, and of those in the Pocahontas field. The purpose of this paper is not one of congratulation on the results so far accomplished, since the operating officials are not at all satisfied that the maximum is in sight, to say nothing of its having been reached; but to describe the organization and methods that have produced these

The major consideration in any management and engineering decision is the economic evaluation of factors. The right decision is the best cost decision, provided of course that it is the safest. Changes, improvements, and advances in mining technology, as in any business, come about through the pressure of economics in combination with the inventiveness and engineering abilities of efficient mine operators. Without proper economic evaluation and an appreciation of profit and loss of an operation, advances in mining methods would come about at a slow pace, if at all.

ALTHOUGH zone melting has found favor in recent years because of its convenience and its faster rate of production of single crystals, the older technique of strain annealing still has a number of advantages. It has been reported1 that the lattice of a crystal prepared in this manner has fewer defects than one grown from the melt and, of course, the control of the external geometry is easier. Also, the diameter of the crystal which can be grown by zone melting has a theoretical limit determined by the surface tension, thermal conductivity, and specific gravity of the material, while the size of that which can be grown in the solid state is limited only by practical considerations. In a program for the study of the structure-sensitive properties of niobium and its alloys it was desirable, for ease of handling, to have available single crystals of large diameter. This requirement dictated the choice of the strain-anneal technique. Induction heating was chosen in the present work in preference to other methods because of its deep penetration of large-diameter sections. A five-turn coil, powered by a motor generator operating at 10,000 cps, is contained in a vacuum chamber. The work is lowered through the coil for both the recrystallization and the crystal-growth steps. Starting with electron-beam melted material, the bars are cold-swaged, recrystallized, strained in a tensile machine, and then subjected to the growth step. Single crystals have been grown under the following conditions: Reduction in area during swaging— 79 to 99 pct, recrystallization temperature—1500o to 1667°C at the rate of 1.25 in. per hr, strain—1.0 to 2.5 pct, growth temperature—1600o to 2400°C at rates from 0.15 to 1.25 in. per hr. Starting grain sizes achieved after the recrystallization step varied from 0.6 to 1.55 mm. The starting grain size was found to be critical; if it is too fine and has any residual cold work, as shown by the presence of a fiberlike texture, a single crystal cannot be grown. Using this technique niobium single crystals have been grown from 0.250 in. diameter and 12 in. long to 1.00 in. diameter and 5 in. long as shown in Fig. 1. The 1-in. crystal is the largest to be reported for a refractory metal as compared to 0.500 in. for molybdenum grown by zone melting.2 As with zone melting, control of orientation is possible by the use of special procedures. Other investigators, see for example Williamson and Smallman,3 have reported that orientation control may be achieved by a bending technique. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point ahead of the interface between the single and polycrystalline portions. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". The amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry which up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. The perfection of these single-crystal specimens as a function of process variables is being measured by X-ray and metallographic techniques and the results will be reported in a forthcoming paper. Alloys ranging from pure iron to pure nickel were saturated with nitrogen gas at 918°, 999°, and 1217°C and analyzed. The solubility of nitrogen at 1-atm pressure was obtained as a function of nickel content for the whole range of iron-nickel alloys and the temperature dependence of solubility is shown for the experimental alloy compositions. The heat of solution and the entropy of solution of nitrogen in the alloys as func-tiom of composition up to 41 pct Ni are given. 1 HE acquisition of more exact thermodynamic information for systems composed of iron with various alloying elements continues to interest ferrous metallurgists. The interstitial alloying elements, especially carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen, comprise a field of particularly intense study. A recent investigation of carbon solubility in Fe-Ni alloys held at 1000°C in gases of fixed carbon activity showed an unpredicted minimum in the solubility near 72 pct Ni.1 The present investigation was undertaken to see if a similar anomaly in solubility existed for nitrogen in Fe-Ni alloys. The solubility of nitrogen in ? iron at known nitrogen activities has been measured several times.&apos;-&apos; Corresponding information for the solubility of nitrogen in solid Ni and Fe-Ni alloys is not available. Juza and sachsze9 reported that metallic nickel dissolved 0.07 pct N in equilibrium with Ni3N at 445°C. This result was regarded as dubious by Turkdogan and Ignatowicz10 who found less than 0.0004 pct N in nickel specimens equilibrated at 600°C with ammonia-hydrogen mixtures having fugacities of N2 gas up to 35,000 atm. Such fragmentary reports indicate only that nitrogen gas has a very much lower solubility in nickel than in iron. MATERIALS A purified iron from Battelle Memorial Institute was used for solubility measurements. This grade contained more than 99.95 pct Fe, the highest content of any measured individual impurity being 50 ppm for each of As, C, Cu, and Pb. The nickel and iron-nickel alloys, supplied by the International Nickel Co., contained 0.02 to 0.04 pct C, 0.17 to 0.19 pct Mn, 0.04 to 0.08 pct Si, < 0.01 pct P, <0.03 pct S, and <0.20 pct Co as principal impurities. The Fe-0.59 pct Mn alloy was of zone-melted quality, the highest concentration of any individual impurity being 15 ppm Al. The "prepurified" grade of nitrogen gas from Matheson Co. had a nominal nitrogen content of 99.996 pct. An "electrolytic" grade of hydrogen gas from National Cylinder Gas. CO. in which the principal impurity is water vapor was admixed with the nitrogen to prevent oxidation of these specimens. This grade was preferred to a purer grade because the presence of some oxygen helps in suppressing contamination of the specimens, for instance, by silicon from the porcelain furnace tube. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The specimens were equilibrated in vertical tube furnaces through which a 99 pct N2-1 pct H2 gas was passed at ambient pressure. For the 915", 918", and 999°C runs, a wound-resistance furnace was used, and for the 1217°C runs, a furnace with a tubular silicon carbide element was used. The temperature control system on both furnaces was similar: a Weston "Celectray" controller with a modulator, responding to the electromotive force of a thermocouple with its hot junction in the furnace, switched the furnace current between high and low settings. The temperature distributions in the working zones of the furnaces were determined with calibrated Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples. The overall uncertainty in temperature was estimated to be ±3° at 915° to 999°C and ±5° at 1217°C . Consideration of the small temperature coefficients of the equilibria studied, together with the error limits in the method of analyzing for nitrogen, showed that further refinement in temperature uniformity would give no improvement in resultant accuracy. The reactive gas was generated by mixing together "prepurified" nitrogen and "electrolytic" hydrogen directly from cylinders commercially supplied. The flow rates of nitrogen and of hydrogen were fixed by setting with bleeders the pressure drops across the individual calibrated flow meters of constant resistance. For any given alloy, the solubility of nitrogen at 1-atm pressure (% N) was obtained from the analyzed nitrogen content of equilibrated specimens (% Na)according to Sieverts&apos; law, thus

Surface mining of coal is widely condemned as a despoiler of the countryside and wastrel of land and natural resources. Yet the fact has been as widely ignored that the ingenuity of those engaged in developing the methods and equipment utilized in surface mining have made several hundred million tons of coal available for utilities and industry which could never have been mined by any other method. While doing this, the surface mining companies have recovered nearly 100% of the coal in the mining area instead of approximately 50% as is common in underground methods. Efficiency has been increasing constantly, thereby maintaining low cost to the customer. Mining has provided economic health in many areas by virtue of the direct payrolls and by the attraction of other industries to enjoy low cost, dependable fuel supplies. Surface mining of coal generally falls into two categories: contour mining, which is the result of mining in hilly or mountainous terrain where the hillside or slope limits the width of the area which can be surface mined; and area mining, which results from the surface of the land being approximately parallel with the coal seam so that a wide area may be mined in a succession of pits or open cuts.

Although the first application of strip mining dates back to 1866, the true origin of today&apos;s problem of land reclamation is found in World War II, when the yawning war machines demanded more, and faster fuel production. To meet the new wartime demands, the strip coal mining companies that had been producing coal for the normal needs of industry and commerce during peacetime worked to the full extent of their capacities but were unable to satisfy the voracious demand. To supplement the production of the established mining firms, a host of temporary, make-shift coal strip operations came into being-road contractors, ditchers and foundation excavators, earth movers of every type became strip coal operators. Unfortunately, many were of the here-today-gone-tomorrow category, and showed little concern for the condition of the land after mining. Likewise, the land owners of the mined properties (most of the land was on royalty lease or tonnage contract) showed little concern. Land owners realized from their acreages more income during the war years of coal production than could have been obtained in two or three lifetimes of conventional farming or other land uses. Most of these mined lands were sub-marginal with little productive promise. As a result the wartime stripping produced most of what are known today as "orphan banks" or "abandoned strip pits." It is of these that so much of the present day complaints about strip mine reclamation are being made.

The magnetic reflux classifier, which utilizes the combined effects of magnetic fields and a hindered settling classifier, is a new tool for determining the quantity and quality of middlings in fine-sized magnetite concentrates. Results are given for processing a typical taconite ore, and a sketch of the apparatus is included. IN examining magnetite ores and beneficiated products it often becomes necessary to make critical studies of the amount of grinding necessary to produce the desired degree of magnetite liberation. In the past this has been accomplished by laboratory heavy-liquid tests, which provide a method for selectively removing middling particles and free magnetite from various-sized fractions. Examination of the various products under the microscope results in fairly accurate determination of the degree of liberation. The method is quite efficient on sizes coarser than 325 mesh. Thus the heavy-liquid method of middling separation was satisfactory until the advent of present day magnetic taconite studies. When magnetite concentrates ranging from 70 to 100 pct —325 mesh are studied it becomes apparent that older methods of determining liberation size are not satisfactory and that there is need for a new method. For example, some of the low-grade magnetite ores of the Wisconsin and Michigan iron ranges require grinding to 100 pct —325 mesh to produce a magnetic concentrate containing less than 12 pct silica. Examination of concentrates from such ores often reveals that many of the middling particles consist of only very minor proportions of iron mineral. Thus it becomes important to be able to determine the degree of grinding necessary not only for complete liberation, but also for liberation of only 80, 85, or 90 pct of the total iron mineral content. Actually, complete liberation is never attained, but is often used to designate that degree of liberation necessary for production of high-grade concentrates. A rougher concentrate, produced after elimination of a coarse-sized tailing, can usually be subjected to a second grinding stage and concentrated into a higher grade product than could be produced from the same crude ore with one stage of grinding resulting in the same overall size reduction. This fact adds to the importance of being able to determine partial degrees of liberation on any magnetite ore. Standard laboratory methods such as heavy-liquid separation, microscopic grain counts, Davis tube magnetic separation, magnetic flocculation, classification, flotation, and others often are not applicable, or are prohibitive because of time requirements when large numbers of fine-sized magnetite samples are investigated. The Davis tube magnetic separator is an efficient tool to use in rejecting the non-magnetic mineral particles from an ore sample. The middlings discarded by the tube separator usually are so low in iron content that they can be considered relatively unimportant in liberation studies. This condition is caused by the extremely high flux density used in the Davis tube. This flux density ranges from four to eight times the flux density produced by most of the powerful commercial machines in use today. Thus the problem resolves itself into a search for a method of selectively removing middlings from Davis tube magnetic concentrates which will be both rapid and efficient. Those methods showing most promise in the development of a process for isolating middlings from extremely fine-sized magnetic concentrates were flotation and magnetic flocculation. The use of flotation to remove middlings from magnetic concentrates is reported in the literature.&apos;.&apos; The flotation process is effective in removing middlings from a magnetite concentrate, but physical entrapment of fine-sized free magnetite in the silica-bearing froth is an undesirable feature. The flotation method of removing middlings requires time, effort, and precise control of many variables, and does not meet the required degree of middling isolation. Magnetic Flocculation Magnetic flocculation has long been resorted to"-" in efforts to upgrade magnetite concentrates. One of the new magnetic taconite plants now under construction on the Mesabi Range includes magnetic flocculation in the flowsheet&apos; as an accessory process to remove high-silica middlings and free silica which has been mechanically entrapped in magnetite flocs. The use of magnetic flocculation as a laboratory method of making precise separation of middlings was further investigated, since it offered a rapid, simple method of accomplishing the desired result. Magnetic flocculation involves the subjection of a magnetic concentrate to a strong magnetic field, passing the concentrate in a highly flocculated condition to a hydroseparator or other classifiers of various types, and removing free silica and middlings as overflow products. Axial tensile, ring tensile, closed end burst, and free end burst tests were done at room tempe.vature and 300°C on three batches of Zircaloy-2 sheathing zuith different textures. Knoop hardness tests were also done on all batches. The mechanical properties of the tubes were largely dependent on the percentages of cold work, but were also markedly affected by the textures, particularly with respect to deformation behavio&apos;r. The deformation behavior observed confirmed Picklesimer&apos;s predictions, zuhereas Knoop hardness results could be correlated with texture and yield strength anisotropy after the ,method of Wheeler and Ireland. From the mechanical properties, and from efjectiue strain values deterrlzined at the fractures using a photoqid technique, it zuas concluded that tubing witlz a single preferred orientation of radial basal poles best combines strength and ductility for any given deqee of cold work. THE mechanical properties required in collapsible Zircaloy-2 fuel sheathing for water-cooled power reactors are strength to resist wrinkling deformation by coolant pressure and ductility to accommodate a small amount of deformation in service without rupturing. Zircaloy-2 tubing during fabrication develops pre- ferred orientations of the a Zr grains due to aniso-tropic deformation behavior, and these textures markedly affect mechanical properties. Picklesimer&apos; had predicted the deformation behavior of tubes with various textures, but the texture required to provide the optimum strength and ductility for a given degree of cold work has not been reported. To investigate this problem, tests at three transverse to axial stress ratios were done at room temperature and 300°C on three batches of Zircaloy-2 tubing covering a wide range of textures and percentages of residual cold work. Knoop hardness values were also measured to correlate with preferred orientation and yield strength anisotropy after the method of Wheeler and relland.&apos; 1) MATERIAL For this investigation, three batches of tube-reduced tubing were chosen from the Zircaloy-2 sheathing produced for the Douglas Point Reactor. Individual tubes were 191/2 in. long, 0.600 in. OD, and 0.0165 in. nominal wall thickness. The identities of the batches, together with their textures, are shown in Table I. These were scattered over the state from the most northern county to the southern counties and from the Mississippi River on the west to the Alabama line on the east. Yazoo County, with 19, received the largest number. The average depth of all the wells was 5333 ft. The shallowest well completed as a dry hole was in Yalobusha County, aban-doned at 1392 ft. in the Selma. The deepest well drilled was in Scott County, abandoned at 10,365 ft. in the Lower Cretaceous Paluxy. G. C. Grasty drilled the Kentucky Lumber Company No. I well, sec. 7, T. 10 S., R. 10 E., Itawamba County, to a depth of 3530 ft. and bottomed his hole in the Ordivician. Boliden Metall Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, treats some 10-10.9 t/y (11-12 stpy) of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. During the years considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low grade ores. The autogenous grinding technique was first studied within the company as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, whereby the merits of pebble grinding could be evaluated. In parallel with the converting of the rod mill/ball mill grinding systems to rod mill/pebble mill systems, the development work concerning the feasibility of autogenous grinding went on resulting in the installation of a 8 6.7 x 2.1 m (8 22 x 7 ft.) cascade mill at the Vassbo lead mine in 1959. Long term tests at the Vassbo plant together with a number of pilot plant test involving low grade silicious ores and pyritic comples base metal ores successive led to a better understanding of the process of autogenous grinding. Before a two stage autogenous grinding system could be chosen for the expansion of the Aitik copper mine, a carefully planned survey concerning grinding characteristics and variances in the ore and flowsheet was undertaken. The expanded plant went on stream in 1972 and in the beginning of 1973 and since then has performed excellently.

Deformation of AuCd alloys having the 8 (orthorhombic) and (3" (tetragonal) structures occurs by the stress induced motion of twin boutdaries. A restoring force acts on displaced twin boutdaries as a result of internal energy increases in the volume through which the boundaries are displaced. The phenomonology of the twin boundary motion is described and a mechanism for twin boundary motion and the restoring force is proposed. A time-dependent stabilization behavior of the twin boundaries, which is observed after the twins are formed by the diffusionless phase transformations, is described. THE AuCd 8 phase (ordered bcc structure) exhibits a transformation to a phase having an orthorhombic structure, 8&apos; (space group D&apos;), for compositions in the vicinity of 47.5 at. pct Cd and to a phase having a tetragonal structure, 8" (point group 4/m, m,m), for compositions in the vicinity 50.0 at. pct Cd. Both transformations are diffusionless, occur on cooling at 60" and 30OC, respectively, and are crystallo-graphically reversible.&apos; They are accompanied by an inhomogeneous deformation which was observed to be twinning in the low-temperature phase. 3&apos;4 The transformations may occur by a "single interface" or by "multiple interfaces."5&apos;6 In the "single interface" transformation, the twinned product phase consisted of two twin orientations as shown in Fig. 1. In the multiple interface transformation the product phase contained "domains" each of which contained two twin orientations, Fig. 2. Deformation of specimens containing transformation twins was achieved by motion of the twin boundaries. Releasing the applied stress resulted in the displaced twin boundaries returning towards their initial positions. This "pseudo-elastic" behavior of the boundaries varied with time after the formation of the twin boundaries by the transformation.

Bjorn Bolviken (Geochemist, Geological Survey of Norway, Trondheim, Norway)-Under the heading "Recognition of Anomalies," the author states, "If the frequency distribution is actually log-normal, the probability of these high values being part of the background population is small (less than 0.023 and 0.0013 for 2 and 3 standard deviation, respectively)." The figures quoted seem to be the probabilities of these high values being the mean rather than part of the background population unless "background" is defined as one single concentration. If the background is considered to be a statistical distribution of concentrations,50 (which is probably the case here since the author uses the term "background population"), the probability of any observed value being part of the background may be estimated through a calculation of the number of observed values that are in excess of (or below) the number expected to belong to the background. Apparently, some confusion exists in the literature regarding this point. Many authors accept the concept of background as being a statistical distribution, but do not seem to recognize the consequences of this concept. One of these consequences would be that the background of a chemical element should comprise any concentration between zero and a theoretical maximum, which is governed by the chemistry and mineralogy of the material

UNDER the able leadership of Samuel H. Dolbear, the Committee on Nonmetallic Minerals furnished a program of sixteen papers comprising three sessions. An outstanding accomplishment in technology presented at the first session by Benjamin L. Miller and C. H. Breerwood is the application of flotation to the purification of limestone used in cement manufacture. In place of selective quarrying to provide high-grade raw material, the quarry-run stone is pulverized and treated in froth flotation cells for removal of free silica and mica. Some advantages are cheaper quarrying, more complete utilization of quarry rock, avoidance of purchasing high calcium stone, lower fuel cost and improvement in the finished cement. Paul M. Tyler presented the general subject of milling methods as applied to nonmetal lies. He pointed out the importance of some of the more recent refinements in ore dressing, and urged the need of a wider appreciation of their possibilities. In the development of a fluid -operated hammer drill&apos; for accelerated penetration of hard rock formations in oil wells, a research investigation was conducted to evaluate the percussion effects obtained with different design characteristics and to determine the possibilities of percussion in the low frequency range. Tests were conducted on granite blocks and comparable impact forces were measured with a load cell under selected test conditions. These full-scale laboratory tests provided an evaluation of the effectiveness of percussion which was further supported by actual downhole field performance. While much pertinent data have been presented by other investigators the method of evaluation described in this article resulted in good correlation between laboratory and field performance and may be applicable in other low frequency percussion developments. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD For these tests the bit was held stationary and the test block was rotated and forced upward against the bit by a hydraulically-lifted rotary table. "Weight on bit" was calculated from pressure readings on the fluid system of the lifting cylinders—corrected for tare and friction. Percussion was obtained with several tubular hammers of different weights up to 320 lb. These were lifted mechanically and allowed to drop by gravity from various heights onto a slidably-mounted bit sub or "floating anvil" for calibration of the load cell response with known kinetic energy of the hammers. During evaluation of percussion effects, the hammers were hydraulically operated to provide a range of percussion frequencies up to 1,020 blows per minute delivered to the anvil. To obtain comparable test readings, the load cell of the strain gauge type, was attached to the bottom of the anvil or bit sub in place of the bit. The load cell rested on a typical granite test block mounted on the drilling table. The latter was hydraulically supported as in the actual drilling operation. The effect of support resistance was the same for all tools when calibrating. Impact forces so determined werethusdirectly comparable with one another for the purposes of this investigation. When a roller bit was substituted for the load cell for actual drilling, the impact force would probably be reduced due to the resiliency of the bit body, legs. cones and teeth and the penetration of the teeth into the rock. However, since the bits and rock specimens were uniform in these tests, an evaluation of actual tool performance, in terms of parameters previously determined with the load cell at the selected standard conditions of calibration, proved satisfactory. Throughout these tests, 8¾-in. standard tricone, hard rock toothed roller bits and carbide-insert roller bits were used. Rotary speeds were 50 and 100 rpm; static weight on bit was applied up to 40,000 Ib, and percussion frequencies up to 1,020 blows per minute were available. During this investigation it was found that toothed bits on which the teeth had developed flat ends about 3/16 in. wide did not change appreciably for the duration of a test. Hence, all toothed bits used in this study were in this condition. Conventional reference curves obtained in these tests show that increasing weight on hit by 2:1 yielded an increased penetration rate of approximately 2.7:1, while an increase in rotary speed of 2:1 netted an increased penetration rate of roughly 1.7:l. Results are thus of the same order as those reported for hard rock drilling by other investigators." CALIBRATION Under the selected standard test conditions previously described, with the lifting table hydraulically supported, and the anvil interposed between hammer and load cell, the hammers were dropped from known heights. Thus, with the kinetic energy of the hammer known, the corresponding maximum impact force shown by the cell was determined. (It may be of passing interest to note here that special drop tests with the hammers showed that no appreciable reduction in impact force resulted from introduction of the anvil or hit sub.) From these calibrations, it was possible to determine the theoretical kinetic energy available in the hammer from the maximum impact force shown by the load cell while operat-

THE mining methods adopted in Japanese mines are less known to the mining world than those of other countries, owing to the geographical remoteness, but they present many features of interest to mining engineers. The Ashio copper mine is at the village of Ashio, in Tochigiken, about 109 mi. (175 km.) from Tokyo by the Imperial Government railroad. The area of the concession owned by the Furukawa Mining Co. is 5000 acres (5023 ha.). The mine was formerly divided into three, viz.. Honzan, Kotaki, and Tsudo, which are distant 3 mi. (4.8 km.) from each other as shown in Fig. 1. However, in 1914, when the writer was general manager, the three mining plants were amalgamated into one with the result of simplifying the working projects and increasing the operat-ing efficiency. The mine was visited-by the Institute party in November, 1911, when Mr. K. Inouye was the general manager. Shortly afterward, the writer was appointed manager, and, in 1915, he was succeeded by Dr. K. Asano. At the end of 1917, Mr. K. Kibe became general manager and, after two years, was succeeded by the present manager, Mr. I. Sugimoto-. For some time Dr. J. Kojima was acting general manager. It is needless to say that the gentlemen mentioned are all members of the Institute, as is also Baron T. Furukawa, president of the company. Since the discovery of the enormous masses, called "kajika" or "bullhead" deposits; which the writer has described elsewhere,&apos; the mining methods have been varied to meet the different conditions presented by these deposits.
