The occurrence and the temperature dependence of the athermal martensitic transformation in bcc Cu-Zn ß-phase alloys have been studied by cold-state microscopy, differential thermal analysis, and electrical -resistivity measurements. CinenzatograpJzic studies have shown that in the majority of alloys the transformation occurs in two stages. A thermoelastic phase, having a 'needlelike" uppearance, forms initially at the MS temperature and grows relatively slowly, chiefly in the edge (lengthwise) direction. With further cooling, an additional martensitic phase forms in rapid bursts at a lower temperature, MB, Both martensitic phases appear to have the same cry stallographic habit hut their modes of formation and growth are different. For the composition range studied, between 38.55 and 41.49 wt pct Zn, the habit planes determined are close to the (2.17 ,12) plane of the matrix, in general agreement with the prediction of the phenomenological theory of martensite formation. Thermal cycling through the MB temperature produces permanent plastic deformation in the 0 matrix and gradutally eliminates the typical burst phenomena. Thermal cycling only through the MS temperature produces no noticeable deformation effects. THE bcc Cu-Zn ß-phase alloys tend to become unstable at low temperatures and undergo a martensitic transformation,'-3 but the details of the transformation have not been completely determined. Following earlier metal log raphic and X-ray work1 Tichener and ever' determined by means of electrical-resistivity measurements the temperature range of the martensite transformation during continuous cooling. The transformation temperature was found to decrease with increasing zinc content, becoming about -130°C for an alloy containing 40.04 wt pct Zn. Hull and Garwood3 made a metallo-graphic study of Cu-Zn 0 brasses at temperatures down to -160°C, and determined the habit plane of the transformation product for an alloy containing 38.88 wt pct Zn. No metallographic studies below liquid-nitrogen temperatures have been reported. The martensitic transformation in ß-brass alloys can also be induced by deformation.1,4 The MD temperature corresponding to the appearance of the strain-induced martensite is some 300°C higher than that observed without strain, and hence the transformation can be strain-induced in alloys containing a higher percentage of zinc. Massalski and Barrett4 found that alloys containing as much as 51.89 wt pct Zn could be transformed into a faulted hcp structure by cold working at liquid-helium temperature. Because the details of the MS temperature and morphology reported in the literature are somewhat incomplete, a further study has been made of some of the above features. A design of a cryogenic stage for optical metallography5 has permitted the examination of specimens at temperatures down to 4.2oK, and the use of a cinecamera has permitted a study of the morphology on cooling and heating. The particular aim of the present work was to examine the transformation temperatures, the habit planes, and the growth morphology over a wide composition range in the ß-phase field. The effect of thermal cycling upon the subsequent transformation was also examined.

The physical properties, chemical behavior under thermal treatment, and fertilizer value of fluorine-containing pseudowavellite (hydrous calcium aluminum phosphate) that occurs as phosphate clay admixed with quartz sand in an extensive deposit near Bartow, Fla., were determined by experiments in laboratory, pilot-plant, and greenhouse. When the mineral was heated at 500°C, 80 pct of the phosphorus became citrate soluble. The heated product, however, deteriorates markedly under moist conditions such as obtain in the soil.

THE Climax molybdenite deposit in Lake County 100 miles southwest of Denver is located in the central part of the mineral belt extending northeasterly across the state. Principal geographic features and geology are shown on Fig. 1. The first period of molybdenite mining, which began in 1918, ended in April 1919 because of limited demand and a price drop to about 72¢ per lb. During this time the ore came from the Leal level and surface outcrops at a higher elevation. Rate of mining was 250 tpd and several million tons of ore averaging 0.7 pct molybdenite were developed. Since April 1924, when the second period* began, Climax Molybdenum Co. has been the only operating company. Production in 1924 was 400 tpd and finding ore was a continual problem. When the White tunnel was extended, however, further ore was encountered. The orebody was thought to be tabular until 1926, when B. S. Butler recognized the relation of the developed ore on the Leal and White levels to a central area of fine-grained hydrother-mal quartz, and by 1929 diamond drilling had blocked out indicated ore reserves in excess of 100 million tons. In 1946, on the basis of information obtained from 25 miles of mine workings and a completed exploratory program involving over 200,000 ft of diamond drilling, the present authors reviewed and brought up to date the geology of the orebody. More recently Sears," employing microscopic techniques, made a study of hydrothermal alteration and mineralization, and Howell and Schassberger'" restudied available geologic data. Production (1953) of molybdenite ore has been expanded to over 25,000 tpd and total production from 1918 through 1953 has been: Tungsten, tin, and pyrite are byproducts and monazite also was produced from 1949 through 1951, after which it was not saved. A maximum of 15 to 20 tons of monazite was produced. Geology of the Area Pre-Cambrian crystalline rocks constitute most of the Mosquito Range for several miles to the north, east, and south of the Climax molybdenite deposit, see Fig. 1. To the west the crystalline rocks are in fault contact with shales and sandstones of Pennsyl-vanian age. Both crystalline rocks and sediments are intruded by dikes and sills of Tertiary age. Numerous faults with small displacements are to be found in the crystalline rocks east of the Mosquito fault and in the sedimentary beds to the west. Pre-Cambrian Rocks: The pre-Cambrian rocks consist of schist and gneiss, identified with the Idaho Springs formation, and granite with minor pegmatite correlated with the Silver Plume granite of the Silver Plume area. The Idaho Springs formation is a general term applied to pre-Cambrian schist and gneiss found over a large part of the Colorado Front Range. At Climax this formation consists largely of biotite-schist and quartz-biotite gneiss with minor quantities of plagioclase and orthoclase, although in places appreciable quantities of feldspar and quartz are present in the more gneissic varieties. Locally, especially along the contact with granite, recrystal-lization of the schist has produced coarser texture and a more pronounced than average gneissic appearance. The gneiss and schist have been mapped as a single unit by Butler and Vanderwilt (1933)" and by Singewald (1951).12 Schist predominates at the higher elevations of the Mosquito Range and in the area to the north and east of Climax. The regional trend of schistosity is northeast with varying dips to the east. Silver Plume granite and associated pegmatite intrudes the Idaho Springs formation. Silver Plume granite in many places and in the Climax district in particular has an irregular form, and many large and small inclusions of schist and gneiss occur within the granite. Granite predominates at the surface in the immediate vicinity of the area of hydrothermal alteration and extends for several miles to the northeast and southeast. As more schist is present at lower levels of the mine than in the upper levels, the suggestion is that the granite is sill-like in form,

A simple method has been developed with which flowing bottom-hole pressure data from two-rate flow tests in oil or gas wells can be analyzed to estimate the formation permeability, skin factor and average reservoir pressure. The required pressure data are obtained by observation of the transient bottom-hole pressure behavior after the stabilized producing rate of the well is changed to another, higher or lower, rate. The new method yields the same information as a conventional pressure buildup analysis, but eliminates the need for closing in the well. The analysis of a two-rate flow test is of the same degree of difficulty and requires about the same engineering time for application as a conventional pressure buildup analysrs. The extended closed-in periods experienced with conventional buildups because of long, low-rate afterproduc-tion periods are eliminated by fIow tests. Other anomalous pressure buildup effects, such as "humping" due to weli-bore phase segregation, can be successfully eliminated with the new method. Generally, flow tests of about 24 hours' duration run with conventional pressure measurement equipment are sufficient for interpretation purposes. Field testing of the two-rate flow test method has established that it is a reliable and economical method which can be used in many instances to complement or even replace conventional pressure buildup methods. INTRODUCTION The principal method for estimating formation permeability and well damage, or skin factor, in a producing oil or gas well is the analysis of shut-in bottom-hole pressure buildup data.' This familiar method has been used quite successfully by reservoir engineers for many years. It is based on the solution of the radial flow equation for constant rate conditions, and requires that the well be closed in for a sufficient period of time to obtain a clearly defined linear portion on the plot of observed t + ?t bottomhole pressure vs log t + ?/?t(where At is shut-in A? time, and t is producing time to the instant of shut-in). From the slope of the plot and other normally obtainable data, the permeability, skin factor, and reservoir pressure at infinite shut-in time (if the reservoir were infinite) can be estimated. Over the years several drawbacks have become apparent in the use of conventional shut-in pressure buildups for determining permeability and skin factor. The conventional pressure buildup interpretation theory assumes that a well is closed in at the sand face and that no production into the well occurs after shut-in. In practice, of course, the well is closed in at the surface, and inflow into the well continues until the well fills sufficiently to transmit the effect of closing in to the formation. This adjustment period is commonly referred to as the "after-production" portion of the pressure buildup. In the tight reservoirs, long, low-rate after-production periods frequently occur, and the well must be shut in for several days or, in some instances, even weeks to obtain an interpretable buildup curve.' Obviously, such long shut-in times can cause loss in current income, both from reduced oil production and from the fact that personnel and pressure measurement equipment are occupied with a single well for too long a time. In other cases, even long shut-in periods do not seem to be of much aid in obtaining an interpretable buildup." If there is considerable phase redistribution (liquid fallout or bubble rise) after a well is shut in, then curves with no interpretable portion are often obtained during the buildup. In addition to instances in which wellbore effects cause trouble, there are also cases in which the major objection to use of the closed-in pressure buildup is simply the fact that the well must be shut in. When there is no proration and when the well has limited producing capacity. closing in the well means loss of income. From the foregoing discussion it is apparent that it ib desirable to have an alternative method of obtaining the same information as that derived from a conventional buildup without the need of closing in the well. One possible solution which has been offered for this problem is the use of a bottom-hole shut-in tool' which isolates the major portion of the flow string from the formation face during the buildup. In this paper an alternative method which is frequently successful in avoiding wellbore effects and which does not require the use of special equipment is presented. A new, simple method has been developed with which the flowing bottom-hole pressure data from flow tests in oil or gas wells can be used to estimate permeability, skin factor and the average reservoir pressure. The required pressure data are obtained by observation of the transient bottom-hole pressure behavior after the stabilized production rate of the well is changed to another, higher or lower rate. The need for closing in the well is eliminated, and pressure measurement periods of only 18 to 24 hours arc usually sufficient, even in tight reservoirs. Thus, the new

The remarkable increase in the distribution of the small underfeed stoker for use in furnaces and boilers in small industrial plants, apartment houses and homes has brought producers and distributors of bituminous coal to consider the problem of which coals and which sizes are best suited to this market. Many papers have also appeared, mostly in the trade journals, discussing the problem of the combustion of various coals and various sizes of coal in small stokers. Much difference of opinion has been apparent in these articles; due often, it would appear, to a misunderstanding of the fundamentals of the process of combustion in the stoker fuel bed. During the past year and a half, a program of research has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute: (1) On the process of combustion in the fuel bed of the small stoker, sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute, and (2) on the relation of the characteristics of bituminous coals to their performance on small underfeed stokers, sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. As a result of this program of research, two publications have been made, one1 dealing with the problem of clinker formation, and the other2 with the relation of the size of the coal fed to the stoker hopper to that of the coal that reaches the retort to be burned. The experimental research on the relation of size to the performance of the coal is being actively continued. A publication of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. presenting the data obtained on the performance of several sizes of four typical bituminous coals will appear shortly. Because of the early appearance of that publication, the present paper includes few numerical data. The purpose of this paper is to follow the coal from the hopper through the furnace with a discussion of the various actions that occur, in the hope that it will lead to a clearer understanding of the relation of the type of coal, the size of coal, and other characteristics, to the performance. The authors do not pretend to have obtained the answers to all the complex questions involved; many unanswered questions will be proposed on which future research work is planned.

The following notes are descriptive of a country as yet in its infancy as regards the advancement made in mining operations. Its inaccessibility and other militating circumstances have retarded progress in that direction. With the completion of the railroad, now under construction, having the city of Cali as its objective point, with the concomitant civilizing and developing consequences, it is certain that the slopes of the Cordilleras will prove to be a South American Eldorado. Deposits of coal, copper, and minerals other than those of the precious metals are known to exist in quantities which, under more favorable conditions of accessibility, etc., could be profitably mined. The Government of the United States of Colombia, I think, is disposed to encourage and foster mining enterprises. Articles designed for mining are admitted free of duty; the permanency of the government is, at least, as well assured as that of Mexico (which is not noted for its immutability), and a more sincerely friendly sentitment towards Americans prevails in the United States of Colombia than in Mexico. This paper is confined to a description of the property of the Cauca company's mines, and is intended rather as a preliminary notice than as an exhaustive report. The Cauca mining district is reached by the following route: New York to Aspinwall; to Panama; to Buenaventura, a port on the west coast of the United States of Colombia, distant thirty-six hours from Panama by steamer; to Cali in the State of Cauca. The State of Cauca is bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the northwest by the State of Panama, on the northeast by the States of Bolivar and Antioquia, on the east by Brazil and Venzuela, on the south by the Republic of Ecuador, and on the west by the Pacific. Ocean. It has a territory of 41,443 square miles, which is about one-tenth of the entire territory of the United States of Colombia. Its population, including the 50,000 savage Indians of the Caqueta (some of whom are cannibals), is nearly 450,000 souls, or about one-sixth of the population of the Colombian republic. A cellular appearing recrystallization product formed by annealing a cold-worked nickel-base super-alloy at 1800°F has been studied by electron nzicroscopy. Prior to deformation, an equilibrium micro-structure of fcc matrix y and cuboidal ,,', Ni (Al, Ti), precipitates of CuzAu structure had been established by an age at 1825°F. The strain-free recrystallization cells consist of very large rodular y' particles in a y matrix. They precipitate is oriented and coherent both before and after recrystallization. The results showed that y' coarsening accompanies recrystallization at 1800°F. However, it does so as a secondary effect and does not necessarily take place at lower temperatures. The structural similarity of this reaction to cellular precipitation in other systems indicates that lattice strain may also play a significant role during some cellular precipitation reactions. THERE have been numerous microstructural investigations of recrystallization in single-phase materials but two-phase systems have received much less attention. The second phase can either remain inert or be altered along with the matrix during recrystallization. If the second phase is an oxidelm3 or a relatively inert pre~ipitate,~, recrystallization is retarded when the interparticle spacing is less than 1 p. Prior to the onset of recrystallization, these materials show a well-polygonized substructure with the subgrain size limited by the interparticle spacing. Since recrystallization by the motion of preexisting grain boundaries6 is not observed, retardation has been related to particle pinning of the subboundaries. This pinning prevents coalescence' or growth8 of subgrains to a critical size (formation of a high-angle boundary) necessary to initiate recrystallization. In a material such as a nickel-base superalloy both y matrix and y' precipitate are altered by the recrystallization reaction. Haessner et al.' studied the recrystallization of a cold-rolled Ni-Cr-A1 alloy by electron microscopy. The material was initially cold-rolled in the supersaturated condition. upon annealing at 750°C, immediate precipitation of 7'occurred. Presence of this 7' greatly retarded the onset of recrystallization which eventually took place by the development of randomly oriented, strain-free grains. The original •/ was dissolved at the recrystallization interface and reprecipitated as oriented, coherent par-tiles in the new grain. Recrystallization caused a refinement of .)' particle size. Recently ~hillips'' investigated recrystallization of Ni-12.7 at. pct Al. Reduction by cold rolling presumably elongated the p' precipitate into lamellae that remained coherent with the matrix. After recrystallization at 600" to 750°C, there was no unusual change in y' particle size al- though there was a tendency toward clustering along the prior rolling direction at 750°C. Above 750°C, the recrystallized grains were generally free of precipitate. Studies in the somewhat analogous Cu-3.23 wt pct CO" and Cu-2 wt pct'2 systems demonstrated that the coherent cobalt-rich fcc precipitate in these alloys obstructed softening, initiation, and completion of recrystallization. The precipitates were deformed into lam~llae during rolling and those of diameter less than 250A remained coherent. Recrystallization took place by the growth of new grains into the recovered or poly-gonized material. In the first study," both matrix and precipitate reoriented in the same manner upon passage of the recrystallization interface. There was no change in particle size or morphology. Tanner and ~ervi,~ on the other hand, observed that motion of the recrystallization fronts was strongly hindered by the pinning action of coherent precipitates in the deformed material. Particles in contact with a pinned boundary coarsened and coalesced leaving a denuded zone in the unrecrystallized region. When the number of pinning points was sufficiently reduced by coalescence, the boundary swept past these particles and through the denuded zone. The authors1' considered this as a variation of discontinuous precipitation with both chemical driving force and deformation strain energy contributing to recrystallization. Preliminary observations by the present authors had revealed that recrystallization in Udimet 700, a nickel-base superalloy, occurred in an entirely different manner. Optical metallography showed that the recrystallized product formed as cellular colonies containing coarse y' particles elongated in the direction of cell growth. In this investigation the structural features of this reaction were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE As-received I$-in. rounds of Udimet 700* were (wtpct) 18.4 15.2 4.95 4.42 3.43 0.06 0.031 0.14 Bal. solution-annealed for 4 hr at 2150" and then fast air-cooled. An initial y-~' structure was established by a 4-hr age at 1825°F followed by a fast air,cool. Essentially the equilibrium volume fraction of ?' at 1825°F is precipitated within 4 hr. Microstructural examination showed no measurable increase in the amount of precipitate after longer aging times. Deformation consisted of swaging to 52 pct RA with 6 pct reduction per pass at room temperature. To reduce the precipitation potential to a negligible amount, recrystallization anneals were conducted at 1800"~ (982"~). Microstructures were investigated by optical and transmission electron microscopy. During the past three years, USBM has developed an apparatus and technique for direct measurement of existing pressure and change of pressure in mine rock. This relatively simple and inexpensive monitor is reliable for months after being installed. It is used to determine shift of ground pressure created by different sequences of mining, to ascertain the cause of rock failures, and to evaluate the need for artificial support. The technique has been employed to measure pressures in limestone, greywacke, concrete, diabase, and soft iron ore. When rock is subjected to a load it is deformed. Ordinarily this is observed in a mine as the displacement of one point with respect to another—the deflection of the roof, which may be observed as a convergence between roof and floor; or the extrusion of material from the rib, which may be observed as a decrease of the distance between the rib and the post of a timber set. The effect of excessive pressure may be a rockburst if the rock is strong, or it may be squeezing ground if the rock is soft. Some desirable effects of high stress (high in relation to strength) are the caving of roof in a longwall mining operation, the caving of ore in block caving, and the decrease in mechanical energy required to break down the mineral seam in a retreating pillar-robbing operation. In any case, whether the observable effect of rock load is desirable or undesirable, it is a displacement, and depends on the following four factors: 1) The structure—the size and shape of openings, pillars, and linings, the geologic bedding and jointing. 2) The mechanical properties of the rock—prin-cipally the strength, modulus of elasticity, and flow characteristics. 3) The load or applied stress—primary sources are the weight of superincumbent rock, which increases with depth, and unrelieved tectonic stresses; secondary sources are redistributed pressures caused by other nearby openings, especially large mined out zones (rock pressure depends partly on the rock structure created by mining). 4) Duration of load, related to the length of time the opening is exposed. CONTROL OF ROCK DISPLACEMENT Rock displacement can be controlled by control of these four factors. Consider now the means of exercising such control over these factors. Control of the structural features is obviously possible to a great extent, as such control is exercised largely by choosing the method of mining and the methods of natural and artificial support. Rock properties vary, even within a particular mine, but they are controllable only in the limited sense that control may be exercised by choosing the beds or zones to be mined so that rocks with undesirable properties will not occupy critical positions within the rock structure created by mining. Rock pressure is the most complex of the four factors through which ground control can be achieved because it is invisible, difficult to measure, and poorly understood. Rock pressure is controllable only to the extent that control is exercised on the rock structure created by mining. Considering openings within a particular mine, time of exposure varies, and is readily controllable because it is easily measured and easily understood — the longer an opening stands, the greater the likelihood of failure or excessive convergence. Control is exercised by choice of an appropriate sequence of driving openings of different classes, such as haul-ageways and rooms, which are required to remain well supported for different lengths of time under different conditions. Again, control is exercised through the method of mining. All controllable factors can be controlled by proper design of the mining method. The orientation and relative positions of the mine workings and the sequence of their excavation are likely to be much more important to ground control than is the design of artificial support. This implies that the major decisions in regard to ground control are made, knowingly or not, at the time the mining method is chosen. WHY MEASURE ROCK PRESSURE In addition to restrictions on the several factors, control implies the measurement of these factors in some sense, whether only qualitatively by visual observation, or by actual quantitative determination with a measuring instrument. Rock pressure is the most difficult of these factors to measure, largely because of the interaction between the measuring device and the rock. Nevertheless, the quantitative

IN a paper1 before this Institute in 1940, the writer reported that the surface orientation texture of zinc and cadmium differed from the texture existing within the casting, in that basal planes were parallel to the surface. He was unable to rationalize the origin of this surface texture. It is conceivable that the surface orientation texture is influenced by the atomic force fields, which are different at the surface and within the body of metal. It was considered that a radical change in the surface against which the metal is cast might alter the surface texture. In trial of this, zinc has been cast against a surface of molten lead, but the same result has been obtained-i.e., (001) parallel, ±20°, to the surface-as was obtained when it was cast against air, Transite or iron.1 Into the bottom of an open cast-iron tray, 7 by 14 in. by 2 in. deep, preheated to about 275°C., about ¼ in. of lead, then) ½ in. of zinc was poured, and the whole was covered with an electric heater to enforce freezing from the bottom upward. After a lapse of time sufficient for the zinc but not the lead to solidify, the zinc slab was raised free of the molten lead. The bottom surface of the zinc casting was coated with a thin layer of lead. A specimen of the slab 1 ½ in. square was metallographically polished to flatten it and remove the slight film of lead, and the orientation was determined by the method used before,1 with the result stated above. Some determinations have also been made on other metals, as follows: Surface orientation determinations were made on the 3/8-in. diameter grip section of two ¼ -in, diameter aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bars and on a 1/8 by ½ -in. flat aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bar. None of these three aluminum die castings exhibited any preferred orientation at-the surface. A brass die casting (nominal composition: 60 Cu, 37.75 Zn, 1.00 Sn, 1.00 Pb, 0.10 Al, 0.15 Si) furnished by C. S. Smith was also examined. The surface showed a random orientation of alpha and beta. SUMMARY A zinc casting solidified against a molten lead surface was found to have the same surface orientation texture, (001) parallel to the surface, as other zinc and cadmium castings. The effects of phase behavior on reservoir economics is a function of both fluid composition and flow properties of the reservoir rock. In some operations such as gas injection into volatile crude-oil resertoirs, the stock-tank recovery derived from vaporization of the reservoir oil by the displacing gas can approach the recovery derived from the displacement mechanism. In other cases of gas-cycling reservoirs, the dry injected gas can effectively vaporize a retrograde liquid phase, allowing a substantial reduction in cycling pressure with no appreciable loss in recoverable liquids. Because of these effects, it is essential that phase behavior be considered in developing the economics of any secondary recovery program in which gas is the injected fluid. The inclusion of phase behavior in conventional calculation procedures has been retarded because of the complexity of the calculation and the large volume of laboratory data required. However, by applying high-speed computers and new laboratory techniques, the phase-behavior displacement calculation has been developed to economically include this basic fundamental of gas displacement. The calculation is performed by reducing the reservoir to a series of one-dimensional segments. Phase changes, saturation distributions and changing fluid properties are evaluated for each segment as a function of time. The relative volumes of equilibrium liquid and gas displaced from each segment are determined by a trial-and-error procedure to meet the requirements of phase equilibrium and two-phase flow. The produced fluids are flashed through conditions of surface separation approximating those in the field to obtain actual values for stock-tank liquid recovery and producing gas-oil ratios. Based on the results of successful field studies, the technique appears to have application to reservoirs producing under a nonmiscible gas-displacement mechanism and should substantially increase the reliability of this type of analysis when phase behavior is an important factor. Predicting reservoir performance under gas-injection operations involves three basic principles of reservoir engineering. First, a material balance exists between the displacing gas and the displaced reservoir fluid. Second, the oil and gas flow in relationship with the two-phase flow property of the reservoir rock; and third, phase equilibrium exists between the displacing gas and the native reservoir fluid. To illustrate these three principles, consider the one-dimensional reservoir shown in Fig. 1. The reservoir is divided into a series of segments representing a one-dimensional cross section between an injection area and a producing area. So represents the oil saturation, Cw represents the connate-water saturation and Sg represents the displacing gas saturation. The gas is moving into Segment 1 and the reservoir oil is being produced out of Segment N. Consider the case when gas has just moved into Segment 1 and the displacing gas-oil contact is at position a-a The volume of oil pushed out of Segment 1 is a function only of mobility and the two-phase flow properties of the reservoir rock, that is, Kg/Ko and µo/µg. Behind the front if the injected gas is foreign to the reservoir oil (a nonequilibrium gas), there will either be vaporization of the oil into the gas or condensation of the gas into the oil. In either case the net result is a mass transfer and a re-distribution of composition and liquid and gas saturation. If the displacement is at constant pressure and is continued, the gas moves into new segments, proceeding succesively into Segment 2, 3, etc. The total volume of oil produced from the reservoir

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910,) THE Altar district, State of Sonora, Mexico, is for the most part a desert with but little rain-fall and few running streams. On account of this scarcity of water it is necessary for the natives to " dry-wash" the placer-gravel, and the object of the present paper is to describe some of the more common Mexican dry-washing devices. My observations were confined to a property known as Las Palomas placers, 15 miles from the Gulf of California and about 150 miles south of the United States border; a brief description of which property may be of interest as illustrating what is, perhaps, a typical Sonora dry placer. It is said that as long as a century ago the Yaqui Indians discovered rich cement-gravel, known as argo masa, at Las Palomas, and that there has been a more or less steady production of gold from the property ever since. The argo masa is a fairly-coarse gravel, the pebbles being quite firmly held together with a lime cement. Gold is scattered through this cement in particles ranging from fine specks to pieces several grams in weight, and occasional large nuggets are encountered. The contents vary so widely that it is difficult to estimate the average value, but returns of from $10 to $50 per cubic yard are common, and it is doubtful if the Indians considered anything less than from $4 to $5 a yard as "pay dirt." This argo masa occurs in channels varying in thickness from a few inches to several feet, and in width up to 300 ft.. These channels are continuous and are probably ancient stream-beds. They are for the most part covered with an over-burden of a more recent gravel, varying from 30 to 50 ft. thick, and the fact that this over-burden contains values as high as $1.50 per cubic yard, and yet was not worked by the Indians, shows that their idea of what constituted pay-ground was high.

This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain varia-tions in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates it some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity, crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. INTRODUCTION When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel-exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfulls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the differ-ent mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accu-racy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results.

My function here today is not to illuminate any particular subject but simply to welcome you to Penn State and to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Our college is, of course, dedicated to the same thing to which most of you have dedicated your lives--the exploration of the earth, the extraction of materials from it, and the production of useful things from those materials. We have about 2,000 students engaged in studying in preparation for service in these activities at the present time. Like other colleges of our type, we've undergone a great expansion just at a time when university budgets are contracting. This creates an interesting situation as to how we can best use our resources. This, of course, is the thing a lot of you are going to be talking about here--how we can best use the world's resources. As you well know, the expectations of the people of the world are rising, and, with the numbers of people increasing and with finite resources, there never was a time in history when it was more important that we become "quantitative" in our discovery, estimation, extraction, and utilization of those resources. I think it is admirable and very timely that you are gathered together to discuss your various approaches to this particu¬lar problem of quantifying and making most efficient use of the resources of the world. Yours is sort of a hidden profession, not just because you actually go underground, but because the public in general is not aware of where the materials they use come from. If you are successful in your professions the public will continue to be unaware. Only if you fail will your essential function become patently obvious. I wish you success both in your professional pursuits and in this particular meeting.

Tkermodynamic functions for dilute solutions of uranium in liquid cadmium were obtained from galvanic cell measurements. Deviations from Henvy's law were observed at concentvations down to 2 x 10-3 atom fraction. Unusually large negative values of the pavtial molal relative enthalpy and excess entvopy of uranium, suggestive of the occu,vvenctwe of partial ovdering of cadmium around uranium in these solutions, were found. The negative relative partial molal enthalpy of uranium at the liquidus accounts for the observed retrogvade solubility of metallic uranium between 473" and about 630°C. The standard free enevgy of formation of UCd,, from a-uranium and liquid cadmium is given by F,° THE constitutional diagram of the U-Cd system,' Fig. 1, is unusual in several respects. The near equality of the Goldschmidt atomic radii2 (Cd, 1.52A U, 1.56A) might be expected to give rise to extensive mutual solubility of the elements except for the restrictions imposed by differences in valence and electronegativity.3 The latter factors must be strongly influential because mutual solubilities in the terminal solid phases are probably negligible, and the solubility of uranium in liquid cadmium in the readily accessible range is only about 1 at. pct. Interestingly, the solubility of uranium in liquid cadmium actually decveases slightly with increasing temperature from 473" to about 630°C. Such a retrograde solubility in a liquid phase is a rare phenomenon in metallic systems; no other authenticated examples were found among the nearly 700 binary phase diagrams compiled by Hansen and Anderko.2 These observations suggested the existence of some unusual interaction between uranium and cadmium. Greater insight into the nature of this interaction was sought by measurement of the thermodynamic properties of the system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The emf of cells denoted by the scheme was measured. Each cell consisted of two uranium and two alloy electrodes immersed in a molten lithium chloride-potassium chloride eutectic mixture containing uranium trichloride. The physical arrangement is shown in Fig. 2. The potential between any pair of electrodes could be measured with a Leeds and Northrup Type K-3 potentiometer. The measurements were made at points marked in Fig. 1. It should be noted that points on the phase boundaries represent the concentrations of uranium in the saturated liquid phases of heterogeneous alloys. Uranium Electrodes. Uranium, which is not a particularly soft metal, is capable of retaining residual stresses, and its potential may depend upon its physical condition. The trend of American construction toward permanence and longevity is noticeable in the more recent coal plant installations; also, the policy of many coal operators has changed from seeking to obtain the desired tonnage from several plants of small capacities to designing a single installation to produce the whole amount. The mine openings and plant of the Nemacolin mine of The Buckeye Coal Co., are located on the Greene County side of the Monongahela River, 73 miles south of Pittsburgh. The map (Fig. 1) shows the general location, also the Lambert syncline. This syncline partly accounts for the selection of the site; the other reasons were the possibilities of rail and river shipments. Two shafts and a slope were sunk to the coal, work starting on all three in the second half of the year 1917. The air shaft was sunk to a depth of 243 ft. and completed in February, 1918; the slope was completed in November, and the skip shaft was stopped at a depth of 21 ft. below the coal, then the concrete lining was stopped 8 ft. above the coal August, 1918. Work on the skip shaft was resumed May, 1923, and sunk to a depth of 60 ft. below the coal by September, but it was not until May, 1924, that the lining was poured. Max. Min. The surface plan shows the relative positions of the openings. Coal was first hoisted from the air shaft May 7, 1918, and entry driving was continued; but the coal had to be stored, as the railroad had not been extended from Crucible to Nemacolin. As soon as the slope was driven to the coal and the linings concreted, the entries were driven along projected lines to connect with those advancing from the air shaft, and skip shaft. As soon as the underground connections had been made between the two shafts, the hoisting by buckets was inaugurated at the skip shaft and construction on the fan at the air shaft started.

The productive area of asphalt-bearing sandstone in Missouri is near the Missouri-Kansas state line near Nevada, the county seat of Vernon County about 100 miles south of Kansas City. While production thus far has been confined to Vernon and Barton counties, there are known deposits in adjacent counties. The area is served by four railroads: the Missouri Pacific, the Kansas City Southern, the Missouri-Kansas & Texas, and the St. Louis & San Francisco. The plant of the Reliance Rock Asphalt Corporation is in Vernon County, about 5 miles west of Nevada, at Ellis, a flag station on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad. A siding has been built to the plant SO that the finished product can be loaded directly into railroad cars. The property consists of a lease of 240 acres in one block. All portions of the property not required for quarrying or processing the asphalt-bearing sandstone are used for farming by the fee owner. The entire tract is very flat so that there are no transportation difficulties from quarry to plant. Geology The commercial asphalt-bearing sandstones are all of Pennsylvanian age, the major portion of the production coming from the Cherokee formation, the basal member of the Des Moines group. The Cherokee formation includes all beds between the base of the overlying Fort Scott limestone and the Mississippian limestones below. It underlies most of the area, but in the west and northwest townships of Vernon County, and elsewhere in local outliers, the Henrietta limestone, forming mounds, escarpments and high ridges, covers the Cherokee, and is in turn covered by the Pleasanton shale. In the eastern portion of the counties, the Mississippian limestones are exposed. The thickness of the Cherokee varies according to the amount that has been removed by surface erosion. Where fully present under the Henrietta; it is approximately 375 ft. thick, but over most of the county it ranges from 100 to 200 ft. thick.
