The subjects of this study are two corrosion phenomena familiar to operators of aluminum plants employing Soderberg anodes of the vertical type, namely the sul-fide scale formation observed at the steel contact spikes and the corrosion wear observed at the lower edge of the gas collecting skirts. The causes of these corrosion phenomena are discussed on the basis of observations from practice and measurements on commercial cells as well as on laboratory experiments. It is concluded that the anode spike corrosion is mainly due to the attack by sulfur compounds contained in the anodically evolved gases and that this attack is greatly promoted by cracks and pores in the anode carbon embedding the lower spike ends. The corrosion of the gas collecting skirt is mainly attributed to anodic dissolution of the iron during occasional contacts with the melt. ANODE SPIKE CORROSION The visible result of this corrosion is the formation of a brittle loosely adherent scale on the lower ends of the mild steel spikes maintaining the electric contact to the carbon anode, Fig. 1. The thickness of the scale usually varies from 0.5 to 3 mm, but in some cases scale of about 10 mm thickness has been observed by the writers. During the spike pulling, usually repeated every 3 weeks, part of the scale often loosens and remains in the anode carbon, resulting in contamination of the aluminum with iron. This corrosion has been attributed to reaction of the iron with gaseous sulfur compounds originating from the anode paste materials.'-4 This paste usually consists of 70 pct precalcined petroleum coke with 1.2 to 1.4 pct S and 30 pct coal tar pitch containing 0.5 to 0.7 pct S. During operation the gasification of the anode materials takes place in two ways: First, gases are evolved by the gradual baking of the anode paste added on top of the anode. Due to the sealing effected by the upper semifluid zone of the paste, these gases, containing sulfur compounds from the pitch, are forced downward through pores and cracks in the rigid anode carbon. At the temperatures of the zone of the lower ends of the spikes, 700" to 900°C, the original components of the baking gas must undergo decomposition, similar to that taking place with the production of coal gas, resulting in a gas mixture consisting mainly of H2 and CH4 with small percentages of H2S as the main sulfur compound.5 Second, the anodic reaction results in a mixture of C02 and CO, the total quantity of which is about 15 times that of the baking gas. These anode gases must carry the entire sulfur content of the carbon gasified by the anodic reaction. Henry and Holliday6 have shown that COS is the main sulfurous component of the anode gases from Soderberg cells. Soderberg anodes usually exhibit a network of vertical cracks, frequently traversing from one spike to the next one and to the outside of the block and widening downward to the working face of the anode. In addition the anode carbon, particularly that below the spike ends, is rather porous, as indicated in Fig. 1. It therefore seems probable that the anode gases also may partly penetrate to the spike ends. As the anode is partly immersed in the melt, the static pressure of this must forward this penetration. I) SPIKE SCALE COMPOSITION A great number of freshly extracted spikes from industrial plants were inspected and samples of the scale collected for examination. Before analyzing the samples a thin iron oxide layer, formed by air oxidation of the outside of the red hot scale immediately after spike pulling, was removed. On the average the Fe/S ratio found by these analyses corresponded to I the composition FeSl. oo7. X-ray powder patterns showed no oxide and otherwise agreed with those found by Haraldsen7 for iron sulfide with 50.00 at. Pct

ALTHOUGH arsenic has a very high vapor pressure and vacuum distillation appears to be a likely method for its removal from lead, the published literature contains virtually no information concerning the vacuum removal of arsenic from lead. Caldwell, Spendlove, and St. Claire1 mention arsenic in their investigation of the removal of volatile metals from lead by vacuum distillation. They do not, however, give any data for arsenic removal or refer to any actual experimental work involving arsenic dissolved in lead. Moriyama, Kozuka, and Miura2 have determined the activity of arsenic in dilute As-Pb alloys in the temperature range from 450" to 600°C using a closed galvanic cell. They found that the activities of both arsenic and lead showed a positive deviation from ideality at 600°C. In view of the lack of experimental data regarding the vaporization of arsenic from As-Pb alloys, a limited vapor pressure study was made on liquid alloys containing from 0.5 to 3.3 wt pct As in lead at 703°C. The pressure of As4(v) above the alloys studied was determined from weight-loss data collected by means of the inert-gas saturation method. The experimental apparatus and procedure used were similar to that discussed by Alcock and Hooper9 with modifications as described by the authors., The technique involved was one of passing a known volume of inert gas over the alloy to be studied in a known amount of time and determining the loss in weight of the sample. Because of the low vapor pressure of lead at 703"C, the observed weight loss could be attributed solely to the vaporization of arsenic as the tetratomic molecule AS43 Measurements of the apparent vapor pressure were repeated at different inert-gas flow rates until from three to five values were obtained which were independent of inert-gas flow rate. This value of the apparent vapor pressure was taken to be the equilibrium vapor pressure of the alloy under consideration. The vapor pressures measured in this investigation have been converted to the activities of arsenic in As-Pb alloys, Table I, by use of the data compiled by Elliott and Gleiser5 for the vapor pressure of pure arsenic. The standard state for arsenic was chosen as the pure, hypothetical, supercooled liquid. The activity of arsenic was calculated from the fourth root of the ratio PAs,/PAS,. The low magnitude of the vapor pressures given in Table I explains the difficulty en- countered by earlier workers in successfully vacuum distilling arsenic from very dilute As-Pb alloys. The data shown in Fig. 1 indicate that the As-Pb system behaves ideally. The apparent outlier represented by the alloy containing 1.43 mol pct As is a result of the fact that the pressure of As, above the alloy was barely detectable by the experimental procedure used in this investigation. Because of this, the apparent vapor pressure determined for this alloy could be in considerable error. Moriyama, Kozuka, and ~iura' have reported that arsenic shows a positive deviation from ideality in dilute solution in lead. However, details of their results have not been made available. This symposium is designed to marshal a state-of-the-art account of approaches and solutions to problems arising out of waterlogging and salinization in the world's largest irrigation system which was dismembered by legal beheading of the Eastern Rivers under the lndus Waters Treaty of 1960. In this introduction, the geological and historical backgrounds of surface waters and groundwaters in the Indus Basin are presented with a summary of remedial measures undertaken and proposed to combat waterlogging and salinization. At a time when water-resource planning is proceeding on a continental scale, a study devoted solely to the Indus River Basin may seem to require an apologia. None is offered, however, for three major reasons: (1) Although the Indus is a single river basin, it is one of great magnitude and importance. The Indus River, which comes from Himalayan sources to form part of the great Indo-Gangetic Plain drainage system, is vital to agriculture and hydroelectric power in the thickly populated northern subcontinent of Indo-Pakistan. (2) The Indus has become a plexus of extraordinary problems since the dismemberment of the world's largest irrigation system of which it was a part. The break-up of this system occurred with the legal beheading of the Eastern Waters under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. (3) Th River Basin has been the target of a Herculean effort to contain the twin encroachments of waterlogging and salinization that now threaten it with a shortage of fresh water. The British irrigation system of barrages and canal on the Indus was a venture admirable in conception. Unfortunately, it is now a legacy burdened with unwanted consequences due to interference with the hydrological regimen, particularly the rise of water table occasioned by leakage. To cope with this situation, there has been a possibly unprecedented concentration of domestic and international engineering and scientific talent on the Indus and its problems (about a score of organizations by recent count). To marshal a state-of-the-art account of their approaches and solutions is the purpose of this Symposium. The coordinated effort now being made on a variety of fronts under the general supervision of West Pakistan Water and Power Authority (WAPDA) is directed toward the modification and control of interactions and relationships between geological materials — soils, water and its salt balance, and air —in what has been termed a huge "underground lake" in an alluvial basin. The problem is an intriguing one in that a highly complicated case history of river-course changes visible in the present surface must be projected downwards through Recent and Pleistocene sediments in order to decipher the environmental controls of deposition in terms of vertical and lateral variations in lithology and patterns. Such studies must be extended to compaction, deformation, and fabrics of the alluvium. Geohydrology is often defined as groundwater hydrology. As employed herein, it includes the distribution, quality, and behavior of surface and subsurface waters, including their evolution, vagaries, and geological, climatological, and botanical milieux." GEOGRAPHY The Indus (Sanskrit, Sindhu = river) rises at nearly 17,000 ft above the sea in the glaciers on the northern slopes of Kailas Parbat, Tibet. It is about 1800 miles long and has a total drainage area estimated at 372,000 sq miles. The average discharge is 196,000 cfs at mouth. Leaving the Plateau of Tibet, the river flows at a level which is miles above the sea, and in places miles below Himalayan peaks, in a structurally controlled northwestward course. Silver ore was first discovered in 1866 at Manhattan, and a few ore shipments were treated in a mill at nearby Belmont. The district was abandoned from 1869 to April 1, 1905, when rich gold float was discovered on what was to be called the April Fool claim. By early 1906, 4, 000 people lived in Manhattan. The San Francisco earthquake, in April of 1906, caused the withdrawal of capital from Manhattan and most of the mines were shut down. Later that year and in 1907, however, more strikes were made. The camp prospered until the mid-1920s, but a steady production of several hundred thousand dollars per year was sustained even during the great depression. Then, in 1939, Nevada's first bucket-line dredge was installed below the town and operated until 1947, producing $4.6 million in gold. The Houston International Minerals operation at Manhattan was started in July of 1980 at a throughput of about 545 mt per day (600 st per day). In contrast to the early day underground operations, Houston's mine is open-pit and processes low-grade disseminated ores. The ore is a metamorphic schist containing 2. 7 g Au and 1. 03 g Ag per mt (0. 08 oz Au and 0. 03 oz Ag per st). Some coarse gold, up to 1 mm in size, is present. Mining and haulage is done by a contractor. Stockpiled mine-run ore is crushed in three stages comprising a jaw crusher and two cone crushers, with screens ahead of the cone crushers. Crushed product, at about 19 mm (3/4 in.) size, is stored in a silo. Grinding is by single stage ball mill with the discharge passing over two hydraulic traps for coarse gold removal. These traps will be replaced in late 1980 by a two-cell Pan American jig treating the cyclone underflow. The jig hutch product, along with the hydraulic trap product that has been stored, will be treated further for gold recovery. The gravity tails will then be cycloned with the underflow being recirculated in the ball mill and the overflow being treated by flotation. A rougher concentrate is made in twelve No. 48 Galigher cells with the float tails being cycloned. Cyclone underflow is refloated in another four No. 48 cells; the overflow is treated in sluice boxes for further gold recovery before being sent by gravity to the tailings pond. Bulk flotation concentrates are cleaned three times with the final concentrate being thickened. The thickener underflow is then batch cyanided in mechanically agitated tanks and washed with barren liquor

One of the difficulties encountered in the preparation of titanium specimens for transmission electron microscopy is the formation of a surface hydride phase during the thinning operation at ambient temperatures. This necessarily destroys contrast, obscures features of interest, and often leads to misleading results. By cooling the polishing solution to temperatures below 0°C this problem has been overcome in the past.' However, since the cooling procedure is somewhat inconvenient, a technique was developed at this laboratory for thinning titanium at room temperature. The material examined was A-70 grade commercial-purity titanium purchased from the Crucible Steel Co. of America. The mechanical and thermal treatments, described elsewhere,* yielded a recrystallized grain size of 4 to 5 p. A slice, 0.5 mm thick and 1.5 mm wide, was cut from a bulk specimen2 using a diamond cut-off wheel. The sample was then coated with paraffin wax. Two concentric holes, about 0.03 in. in diam, one at each broad face, were scribed through the wax to the surface of the metal. Subsequent polishing for several minutes resulted in a preferentially thinned or "dimpled" region. Thereafter, the wax was removed and the entire specimen polished to the point of breakthrough at the base of the dimple. Polishing was effected chemically in a solution comprised of 30 pct HF and 70 pct HN03 by volume, kept at room temperature (20" to 25OC). The specimens were mounted in a stereo holder and examined at 100 kv in a Philips l00 B Electron Microscope. A micrograph from a foil prepared in this way is shown in Fig. 1. Several points are noteworthy. This electron micrograph shows neither evidence for the formation of a hydride phase due to specimen preparation nor, moreover, any obvious surface contamination in electron-transparent areas of a freshly prepared foil. Localized variations in foil thickness observed in some specimens seem to be a characteristic of this chemical polish but do not seriously detract from foil quality. With care, the lifetime of a good specimen exceeded 2 hr in the beam. On the other hand, the exposure of a sample to air at atmospheric pressure, when still warm from the beam, clearly resulted in the deterioration of a formerly clean area just previously in the field of view. An example in Fig. 2 of a contaminated region reveals features, and "spots", not unlike those observed in much purer material by Yamane and Ueda. Consequently, one can conclude that: 1) titanium can be thinned satisfactorily in a solution at room temperature for transmission electron microscopy; 2) large-scale precipitates, >50A in diam, are absent in commercial-purity, recrystallized, furnace-cooled, A-70 titanium containing about 3800 wt ppm interstitials and the same amount of iron; 3) care must be taken not to attribute surface contaminants to precipitates. (written discussion *).-Ad-vantage will be taken of this occasion to mention briefly a form of double potentiometer which has been used at the Bureau of Standards for about 2 1/2 yr. in calibrating thermocouples. The calibrations referred to are those made by comparison to standard couples. In order to insure equality of temperature between the couples, the junctions are fused together; consideration of fundamental principles will show that this introduces no error. Two separate potentiometers are used, one connected to each thermocouple, and each potentiometer is provided with a reflecting galvanometer. The two spots of light are reflected on to a single scale, the galvanometers being set in such a position that the spots coincide on the scale at a point marked zero when the circuits are open or when the potentiometers are balanced. By setting one potentiometer to a desired value and adjusting the other so that both spots pass across the scale together as the temperature rises or falls, simultaneous readings are obtained. By making observations first with a rising temperature and then with a falling temperature, the rates of rise and fall being approximately equal, and taking the means of the results found, several minor errors such as those clue to differences in the time lags of the two systems, etc., are eliminated or greatly reduced. The health hazard due to the inhalation of certain dusts in the mining industry has been recognized, but was not subject to state or federal inquiry in the United States until about 1916. Reports on miners' phthisis and associated effect of dust inhalation were published as early as 1903 in South Africa and in 1906 in Australia. A report was made by Lanzal in January 1917 of a study of 433 cases of miners' consumption among zinc miners in southwestern Missouri. In a preliminary report issued in 1915 Lanza and Higgins2 concluded that, while there were general causes, such as housing and working conditions, that tended to produce a high incidence of tuberculosis, the flint dust constituted an unusual element of danger, to which it was reasonable to attribute the unusual prevalence of tuberculosis. Later a clinic established under the joint sponsorship of the United States Bureau of Mines, the mine owners, and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. carried on an extensive study covering a period of five years. The results of this study have borne out the conclusions reached in the earlier surveys. The early surveys in this country indicated the necessity of determining the extent of the dust pollution of air associated with the various mining operations. The first determinations were reported on the weight basis, undoubtedly to make comparisons with work previously done in Australia. Later studies of dust in industry led to the development of more refined methods of sampling and enumeration on the basis of count in place of weight, so that by 1919 Knowles3 reported 53 methods.

Though liberality is not supposed to be a prominent trait of the Scottish character, Canada owes to a Scotchman, Sir Wm. Macdonald, more than to any other of its people, not only wise ideas, but pecuniary help towards extending education: and another Scotchman, in New York, has sumptuously housed under one roof three branches of the engineering fraternity, of which we are one. Having thus created us members of the same family—for the metaphorical meaning of house and kinship is identical—Mr. Carnegie expresses more emphatically than even he could in words, that, by aff'ording facilities for closest intercourse, he invites the mechanical, electrical and mining engineers to participate in the freest interchange of idea and experience, and to correlate and combine the results of their studies and activities; and, being members of the same household, to banish reserve and secrecy. And now we, the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, meet as though we were at home in a neighboring country. For whether we meet in Canada, in England, or elsewhere, the Institute is always received as though no political or geographical divisions separated its members from those of congenial associations in the land of its host. In truth, the title which we have assumed claims for the sphere of our activities the whole American continent, regardless of such trifling details as boundary-lines. The fact that we meet to communicate each other's experience, to discuss our difficulties, and to seek each other's aid in solving the intricate problems that so often present themselves in the course of our professional life, is an acknowledgment of our individual helplessness; and therefore an argument for united effort. But no effort can be of any value if there is an underlying suspicion

Sodium, a relatively abundant element in Illinois coal, is reported to cause fouling of utility boiler heat exchange surfaces. Distilled water extraction of 22 Illinois coal samples resulted in average removal of more than 50% of their included sodium. Chlorine was the dominant anion. Extraction rate conformed to Fick's law of diffusion. Extraction with hot water increased both the rate and maximum amount removed. A commercial-scale countercurrent staged process can be envisioned as technically feasible.

SEVERAL distinctions can rightfully be accorded the Bagdad enterprise. For one thing, it has the most romantic name among the Porphyry Coppers and this is said with all due deference to Copper Queen and Inspiration! Bagdad was one of the richest and most magnificent cities of the glamorous world of the Arabian Nights. The record does not say who was responsible for applying the name Bagdad to the company that in 191 1 took over the property of the Arizona-Nevada Copper Company; but whoever it was must have had visions (or at least hopes) of a fabulously profitable mine. So far as I know, Bagdad is the only Porphyry whose owners, or officials, ran afoul of the law because of alleged sins of omission or commission in vending shares of the company's stock. E. B. Bronson, of New York, had been interested in Bagdad since 1909; and, during the lean period of the 1930's he had, as president of the corporation, endeavored to raise needed funds by the sale of 140,000 shares of treasury stock. Some legal questions arose as to the need for registration under the Securities and Exchange Act; but, when Mr. Bronson finally filed a registration statement, the New York office of the Securities and Exchange Commission found 155 "deficiencies" in the document. According to the judge who later heard the criminal case against Bronson, no evidence was introduced to show that he had personally benefited "to the extent of one dollar." However, it was charged that the setup was such that he was in position to profit if he had wanted to! A somewhat quixotic position, it would seem. The mechanisms of corrosion and corrosion fatigue damages to sucker rods are examined from a fundamental electrochemical viewpoint, and the relationships of sucker rod microstructures to these damaging effects are defined. The common corrosive agents in crude oil production and storage are discussed as to types of attacks that they cause. The variations of fatigue strength with alloy content, surface preparation, and stress ranges are analyzed. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to how microstructures largely influence and control sucker rod performance. INTRODUCTION Greater than 90 per cent of the crude oil produced by artificial lift methods is produced through sucker rod pumping systems. In the USA each year more than $14 million is spent for sucker rods in new and old pumping installations. It is important to make this investment a wise one. Essentially, the sucker rod system is a long series of steel rods, operating under alternating stress loadings and under mechanical vibrations, which connect the surface power source with the subsurface pump. These rods often operate in a variety of corrosive media, including water, brines, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sul-fide, and air. Basically, this paper is concerned with the problem of the behavior of certain steels in various corrosive media under high and dynamic stress patterns. The main objective of this paper is to show how, once the stress effects and the corrosive environments are defined, one can still realize structural control and beneficial influence upon corrosion and corrosion fatigue. FUNDAMENTAL DEFINITIONS AND ANALYSIS In the corrosion and stress behavior of this solid state mixture of iron and iron carbide called steel, one must analyze upon what major factors does its service life depend and of what, exactly, is steel composed. The former question can be referred to two external factors and two internal factors. The two major external factors are: 1. the nature of the stress patterns — size and range of stresses present 2. the nature of the corrosion — erosion environment — the corrodent and/or wear involved The two fundamental internal factors that govern the strength and useful life of a steel both in normal duty and in heavy-duty corrosion service are: 1. the nature of the steel volume properties 2. the nature of the steel surface properties For the latter question normal steel is defined as a solid mixture of iron and iron carbide particles, generally with certain accidental and intentional elements present. (The amount of iron carbide present is determined by the carbon content of the steel.) These additional elements generally dissolve into either the iron (ferrite) or the iron carbide (cementite) components.

A NEW method of treating steel by ammonia has recently been intro¬duced into the metallurgical industry, by means of which piston cylinders of internal combustion engines, shafts and other similar steel products can be made more resistant to wear than formerly. In 1929 the writer' published the historical notes and some experiments upon nitrification. He believes that the corrosion of nitrified steel is a matter of importance and worth studying; and as there have been few studies thereof, he has conducted experiments in this respect. L. Guillet,2 in 1927, reported corrosion tests made on nitrified and cemented steels with acid and salt solutions. In 1928, 0. Hengstenberg3 reported the high resistance of nitrified steel to water vapor and air. V. 0. Homerberg4 stated that nitrified steel has high resistance to water, air and salt solution; and G. Hagg5 studied nitrified layers of iron by means of the X-ray. Though F. Hanaman6 in 1913, measured the single potential difference of steel treated with ammonia at above 650° C., no one, it seems, has ever measured the single potential difference of the so-called nitrified steels having extraordinary hardness. The writer measured the single potential differences of nitrified special steels in various solutions with the object of studying the corrosion problem and, if possible, of knowing whether any new physical property would be caused by nitrification.

This paper has been prepared at the suggestion of Mr. Dunbar D. Scott, to supplement his " Evolution of Mine-Surveying Instruments."† Before entering into a detailed history of solar instruments, a few remarks will be made touching upon land-surveys in general, and on what has led to the development of these instruments.The oxidation of metals melted in contact with air takes place with dissimilar results. Tin, lead or zinc are examples of a class, the oxides of which float on the surface of the melted metal. First a film is produced, which covers the surface; then, if agitation from any cause exposes new metal to the action of the air, additional oxidation takes place, and the film is increased in volume. This change goes on until a considerable quantity of oxide (or " dross," as it is technically called) is formed; depending, of course, upon the duration of the exposure of the metal to the atmosphere. When such metals are poured, the dross may be skimmed off; and clean metal will be left underneath. The removal of such oxides is, therefore, merely a mechanical process. In the case of copper, however, the result is quite different. The sub-oxide of copper (Cu2O) is readily soluble in molten copper; and therefore, instead of the formation of a film of oxide, to be finally removed as dross, the surface of the metal remains bright and clear, because the oxide has been dissolved as soon as it was produced. It is customary in the process of copper-refining to leave a small quantity of oxide in the metal, in order to oxidize any traces of bismuth, arsenic or antimony which have not been entirely removed.
