Numerical solutions of immiscible flow problems in which dispersive effects of capillarity are dominated by convection require excessively fine grid spacing with attendant high computing costs. The use of coarser spacing reduces cost but often produces oscillation or undue dispersion associated with displacement fronts, A numerical formulation is proposed here which should be applicable to two-dimensional flow problems. it is in part analogous to an approach previously tested for miscible systems. The convective transport is approximated using a change of variables to yield a coordinate system moving approximately with the local characteristic velocity. The capillarity-induced dispersive terms in the differential system describing the process are approximated with respect to a fixed coordinate system by the usual implicit formulation. One-dimensional tests of the procedure yielded results in which the saturation profiles tended smoothly to the zero-capillary pressure solution as the ratio of viscous to capillary forces was successively increased in a sequence of calculations. This contrasted favorably with solutions by other numerical procedures which would require attendant grid refinements to approach the zero capillary pressure results. INTRODUCTION Numerical solution of displacement problems has until recently relied on applying methods developed primarily for transient heat-flow problems. Such problems are classified as parabolic in type, and where the heat transport is purely by diffusion their solutions are characterized by a high degree of smoothness. It is not surprising, therefore, that for approximating these solutions available finite difference methods are quite adequate. In flow problems the transport is partly by diffusion, partly by convection or flow. Although the problem remains of parabolic type because the dispersive effects of capillary forces or diffusion play some role in every displacement, at high flow rates the problem is dominated by convection, and solutions tend toward those of equations of the hyperbolic type. Solutions of hyperbolic problems are characterized by the translation of fronts, or discontinuities, that may progressively increase in sharpness. Numerical methods for treating parabolic problems become less and less satisfactory as displacement rates increase and the role of dispersion due to concentration or capillary pressure gradients becomes small relative to transport due to flow. In computation the difficulty manifests itself as an error associated with the grid size chosen. 1-6 In summary, if the heat-flow type approximations are to include the terms arising due to convection, one of several choices may be made: (1) an upstream (to the direction of flow) approximation for the convection terms may be used; (2) a centered-in-distance (CID) approximation may be used; or (3) a recently developed approximation based on the theory of oscillation matrices may be chosen.6 The last appears to have significant promise for one-dimensional flow problems; its extendibility to two or three dimensions is an open question. In either of the first two approaches, a suitably small ratio of v&/D must be maintained, where v is the velocity, & is the grid spacing and D the effective dispersivity in the direction of flow. In the first choice, the approximation of the convective part is only first-order correct and errors introduced appear as a numerically induced dispersivity of magnitude proportional to v?x. In the CID choice, the approximation can be second-order correct, but the difference formulation fails to satisfy the maximum principle unless a condition on v?x/D is met. Practically, this means that for high flow rates oscillatory solutions may result in the neighborhood of a front unless exceedingly small grid intervals are taken. While the procedure proposed by Stone and Brian4 permits a less severe limitation to be placed on this ratio, ultimately the flow rates increase relative to the dispersivity the oscillation obtains. SUCCESS in any underground mining operation is determined by accessibility of the orebody, which in turn is dependent upon maintenance of passage- ways to the mining zones and temporary support of the voids caused by extraction of ore. This is accomplished by one or a combination of the following methods: timbering, back-filling, pillaring, or, more recently, rock bolting. Timbering has usually been the principal means of maintaining these underground openings necessary for mining operations. Timber, however, does not prevent ground movement beyond the scope of localized sloughing, which is indicated by the gradual failing of the timber itself. Besides this, timbering has always been a costly process, and with the decline of available supplies of timber close to the mining areas, mining men have constantly sought other methods of controlling ground.

WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well.

As an energy source, lignite is short on selling points-it contains large amounts of moisture and often large amounts of ash, resulting in low heat content. The moisture produces rapid oxidation upon exposure and self-ignition commonly occurs within two to three weeks, resulting in major transportation and storage problems. Nevertheless, as interest in alternate fuel sources increases, lignite deposits in the Coastal Plain of the US are attracting more and more attention. Two lignite mines are operating in Texas and additional developments are planned in that state, Arkansas, and Louisiana. At present, Texas lignite is burned only at mine-mouth generating facilities, but more exotic uses such as gasification are projected in the future.

Presented in this paper is a summary of the results of experiments conducted in both the laboratory and the field during the past three years in connection with casing-perfora. tion problems. Included are studies of gun features that influence bullet performance and penetration, and studies of the effect of perforator bullets on casing and the neat cement in the annulus. Discussion and data are also presented relative to the accuracy of depth measurements in deep wells. Introduction It is a common practice in the oil industry to effect the completion of oil wells by setting and cementing casing through the producing horizons and perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval by means of a gun lowered into the well on a cable or on the tubing. This practice has been followed for some time, and this method of completion has been given considerable study by the companies that render perforating service as well as by the oil companies that utilize their services. Through continued research on this subject, it has been possible to develop guns, bullets, and powder that will permit controlled firing at great depths, and penetration of as many as two strings of casing. It is the object of this paper to present the results of studies made of gun perforating in both the field and the laboratory. These studies were made to determine the factors that affect penetration of the bullet, burring of the casing, accuracy of depth measurements, and other items. It is hoped that by presenting the results of these investigations a better understanding may be obtained of certain of the factors involved in gun perforating and further investigation of the subject will be prompted. Subsurface Tests A well approximately 9000 ft deep, which was being prepared for abandonment, was selected for subsurface tests of gun-perforating experiments, In preparing the well for the experiment, 51/2-in. casing in the hole was pulled and racked in the derrick. A test section of pipe, which consisted of 65 ft of 5-in. 18-lb J-55 casing centered inside 7-in. 28-lb N-80 casing, was placed in the derrick corner and the annulus between the two pipes was cemented from the bottom up with 161/2 lb per gal neat cement, which was mixed and displaced with a cementing truck in the usual manner. After the cement had been allowed to harden for about a week, the test section was lowered into the hole on the 51/2-in. casing to a depth of 6600 ft by casing measurements. The hole was filled with drilling fluid weighing 10 lb per gallon. A perforating company was called to perforate the pipe, but was not advised that an experiment was being conducted. The company was asked to check the total depth (to cross pins in the bottom of the test section), then to raise the gun a given distance and fire a given number of shots with 1/2-in. bullets, pick up another distance and fire a given number of 3/8-in

HOT pressing of powder particles has gained importance recently, since it affords a method in which high densities are rapidly attained. In a recent study on hot pressing of alumina powders, Mangsen, Lam-bertson, and Best1 have shown within the limits of their experiment, the validity the rate equation for densification in hot pressing, originally proposed by Murray, Livey, and Williams.2 i.e., where D = fraction of theoretical density, t = time, P = pressure and 77 is the viscosity, all in appropriate units. This equation was derived from earlier work of Shuttleworth and Mackenzie3 which is based on the closing of spherical pores under the action of surface tension. The integrated form of this equation yields a straight-line relation between log (1 - D) and t. Such conditions were found by Felten4 to be true only after extended periods of pressing. Cylindrical magnesium single crystals were deformed in torsion. The axis of torsion was the basal pole. Five crystals were deformed to different strains between 0.08 and 1.03 and then sectioned in order to determine their dislocation densities using the transmission electron microscope. The work hardening rate of all specimens was at least an order of magnitude higher than that normally associated with easy glide in a tension test and comparable to that obserzed in stage B of a tension test. The correspondence between stage B in a tension test and the initial stages of a torsion test is believed to result from the fact that in both cases deformation occurs in a structure containing roughly equivalent densities of the dislocations associated with the three basal slip vectors. THERE are three basic ways of changing the shape of a crystal using slip dislocations. The crystal can be sheared along a slip direction in a slip plane; it can be bent about an axis in the slip plane normal to the slip direction; and, if the slip plane contains multiple slip directions, it can be twisted or rotated about the slip plane normal. Of the three processes, generally known as translational, flexural, and rotational slip, only rotational slip has not been extensively investigated. The object of the present research was to obtain basic information about this phase of crystalline plasticity. This paper is concerned with some aspects of the stress-strain curves obtained by twisting magnesium crystals about their basal poles. Magnesium was selected for four reasons. One, its recovery rate at room temperature is relatively low. Two, single crystals may be easily grown. Three, at room temperature the critical resolved shear stress for basal slip is about two orders of magnitude lower than that for nonbasal slip, so that rotational slip might be expected to occur primarily by basal slip. Finally, relationships between flow stress, shear strain, and dislocation density have been determined for tensile deformation of magnesium crystals,' thereby providing a basis of comparison for the torsional results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Crystals were grown from 0.5 in. diam extruded sublimed magnesium rod furnished by the Dow Chemical Co. who reported that it contained in weight percent less than 0.0003 Al, 0.01 Ca, 0.01 Cu, 0.0012 Fe, 0.001 Mn, 0.0005 Ni, 0.003 Pb, 0.001 Si, 0.01 Sn, and 0.02 Zn, with the balance magnesium. All crystals were grown in a dried argon atmosphere using Jill-son's2 modified Bridgman technique. Two different methods were used to obtain crystals with the basal plane normal to the specimen axis. These included direct growth from seeds of the proper orientation, and spark machining (trepanning) of 0.5 in. diam cylinders from larger (1.5 in. diam) randomly grown crystals. The crystals thus produced were polished in a 20 pct HC1 water solution and then etched in a 1 pct HC1 water solution to develop etch pits lying in rows parallel to the basal plane trace. The crystals were then revolved about their axes on the stage of a low-powered microscope. Torsion specimens were prepared only from those crystals whose axes were normal to the rows of etch pits. It is estimated that this simple orientation method was accurate to about 51 deg. 1.625 in. long cylinders were next cut from these selected crystals and then acid machined in a 20 pct HC1 water solution into torsion specimens with a 1 in. long by 0.30 in. diam reduced gage section. Following this, they were annealed in air at 400°C and furnace cooled to room temperature. The specimens were given a final polish in a 10 pct HC1 water solution, rinsed in ethanol, dried, and cemented into brass grips with an epoxy resin. In addition to the torsion specimens, several tensile specimens with their basal planes at 45 deg to the stress axis were also prepared with similar dimensions except that the gage sections were increased to 4 in. in length. HAVING previously shown you how ores are found and mined, and also how they are prepared and disposed for smelting, and then how the blast furnaces and other furnaces are made for purging their earthiness, all this would be as nothing if I did not proceed to show you the method of smelting them. Therefore, in the present chapter I wish to show you how you must proceed in this very important operation, telling you all I have seen and also how much work with this kind of blast furnace I have done or directed. For this reason I tell you first to take by weight or measure the quantity of ore that you wish to smelt and, particularly if it is a kind that contains silver, break it into small pieces about the size of [52v] beans. If the ore had previously needed evaporation by fire or cleaning by washing, you will have had this done well and have had it properly prepared by a master sorter or others. A layer of this is arranged on a bed of planks, bricks, or flat stones in front of the blast furnace and its companion is placed on top, then a quarter part of galena or a third if you can obtain it. Then an equal part of crushed iron slag or slag from the same or different ore is added. These materials are spread in layers one above the other. When the blast furnace has been constructed as taught above, correct in all its parts, and is full of well-kindled burning charcoal, then fill it up with charcoal and admit water to the bellows machine. When you see that it is well kindled again from this wind and that the flames begin to come out forcefully on top, work it down with a little rake and fill it up again. Then the pannier is filled with new charcoal, the blast furnace heaped full, and another basketful of the said composition of ore is also put on top. Proceed in this way, continually adding charcoal and ore as long as you have any, or as long as you wish to keep up the work, maintaining the blast furnace always full, or continuing in this way until the bottom of the blast furnace is filled with melted materials. Decide this by judgment, or by seeing through the mouth of the tuyère where the wind of the bellows enters that they are level with this. Then with an iron tool open the hole that was left as an outlet in front of the blast furnace and allow all the metal with its slag to run out. These two things, flowing through the chan-

THE property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, 147 km. (91.5 miles) eastward by rail from the port of Chañaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges. The mine is on the westerly slope of the outer, or western, range, at a mean elevation of 3250 m. (10,500 ft.). A meter-gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 151 km. (94.0 miles), of which 93 km. (57.79 miles) are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. The remainder of the road is owned by the state. The company operates its trains over the portion of the road owned by the state, under an agreement with the Chilean Government. The mine is connected with the reduction plant by a meter-gage railroad, 10 km. (6.214 miles) long, which extends from the coarse ore bins at the metallurgical plant to the underground storage bins at the mine. Tunnels make up 60 per cent. of the total length of this railroad. As is characteristic of the Andean region in Chile, the topography of the locality is extremely rough, and a number of points near the mine have elevations of from 15,000 to 16,000 feet.

For several years an investigation has been in progress in the research laboratory of The American Brass Co. to determine the thermal and electrical conductivities of most copper alloys of commercial importance and several of scientific interest. This paper contains such data on the binary alloys of copper with silicon, aluminum, manganese and nickel, and on a large number of ternary or more complex alloys. Some interesting general relationships between the thermal and electrical conductivities for all copper alloys at all temperatures are pointed out. The data for the copper-zinc, copper-phosphorus and copper-tin binary systems have already been published1,2 † except for the electrical conductivity at 200" C., which is given in the appendix of this paper. Literature on Thermal Conductivity of Copper Alloys The papers referred to above contained a summary of the figures available in 1929 for the thermal conductivity of copper alloys. There is given in Table 1 herewith a selection of the data that have appeared since that time. The measurements of Hanson and Rogers3 are particularly interesting since they cover a series of alloys in the alpha solid solution range and show the effect of heat-treatment. Their alloys were tested as annealed castings, and are not therefore directly comparable to the worked alloys measured in the present investigation, although the difference is small. Bailey's determinations4 were carried out on the alloys used by Lees6 in 1906, and extend his results to higher temperatures. It is most unfortunate that the alloys were not analyzed, for the approximate compositions given are hardly sufficient identification of the material. It is equally to be regretted that neither Hanson and Rogers nor Bailey give data for the electrical conductivities of their samples. Sager6, using the heat-wave method of King, determined the thermal conductivity of copper, nickel and four alloys of the two metals. His results are included in Table 1.

A modification, of the Kelvin bridge using an inductor was used to measure the conductivities of molten sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and mixtures thereof. A capillary-type four-lead fused quartz dipping cell was constructed. The effect of a small amount of potassium chloride on the conductivity of the melt was determined. IN the electrowinning of sodium and chlorine from sodium chloride in Downs cells, calcium chloride is added to the sodium chloride in an approximately equimolar amount to permit cell operation at a lower temperature. This lower temperature improves current efficiency and ease of operation, but decreases voltage efficiency by decreasing the electrical conductivity of the melt. A knowledge of the electrical conductivity of the Downs cell melt is necessary to the understanding of Downs cell operation, for the IR voltage drop across the melt is responsible for a significant part of the electrical power consumed by the cell. The work of previous investigators on fused sodium chloride-calcium chloride mixtures was reviewed from the standpoint of consistency with the results of others on the conductivities of the pure constituents. The electrical conductivity of pure fused sodium chloride has been established with accuracy by Van Artsdalen and Yaffe,1 by Edwards, Taylor, Russell, and Maranville,2 and by Lee and Pearson.3 It has also been studied by a number of other investigators.4-13 The best values for calcium chloride are believed to be those of Lee and Pearson,3 since the sodium chloride and potassium chloride conductivity values given by them check the best literature values. A number of other investigators have also reported values for calcium chloride.'-"."' Electrical conductivity data for fused sodium chloride-calcium chloride mixtures have been reported by Sandonnini,12 Vereshchetina and Luz-hnaya,18 Ryschkewitsch,11 Barzakovskii,5 and Alaby-shev and Kulakovskaya.15 Sandonnini reports no data at temperatures lower than 850°C. The conductivity values reported by Vereshchetina and Luz-hnaya, by Ryschkewitsch, and by Barzakovskii for pure sodium chloride and for pure calcium chlor- ide vary somewhat from the literature values believed to be best and the sodium chloride-calcium mixture data of these authors and of Alabyshev and Kulakovskaya (who give no data for the pure compounds) show significant variations. In view of these facts, it seemed that an investigation of the electrical conductivities of fused sodium chloride-calcium mixtures would be worthwhile. Apparatus Bridge System—The bridge used,in this investigation is diagrammed in Fig. 1. In general, the elaborations of this bridge over the simple Wheatstone bridge were for the purposes of a) eliminating lead resistances or making them accurately measurable, and b) eliminating major capacitative and inductive effects or balancing them against each other. Lead resistances in the lower arms of the bridge were kept as low as possible by making the leads short and of low resistance wire. This could not be done in the cell arm of the bridge because of the remoteness of the cell from the other bridge components and because of the high-resistance nickel or chrome1 wires used in the cell. Since maximum sensitivity is attained when the resistances of the four arms of the bridge are equal, 50-O resistors were used in the lower arms of the bridge when fused salt conductivities were being measured, and 1000-O resistors were used when the cell was being calibrated with normal aqueous KCl solution. The cell resistance was of the order of 50 ohms with fused salts and of the order of 1000 ohms with normal aqueous KC1 solution. The resistors used were non-inductive and accurate to 50.05 pct (General Radio Co. Types 500-C and 500-H). The lead resistance between point A in the cell and point E at the measuring resistor was eliminated by using the kelvin bridge principle; that is, the voltape drop across the lead from point A to point E was divided between the cell arm of the bridge and the measuring arm of the bridge in proporation to the resistaxes in the lower arms of the bridge.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Baker's account of his experiences with stock-distribution has been particularly interesting to me, as it confirms the opinions which I had formed concerning the rapid failure of linings in several furnaces that have recently come to my notice. These furnaces, four -in number, are of modern construction, having been built or remodeled within the past two years, and are equipped with a well-known type of skip-hoist and double-bell charging-apparatus. In every case, a hot spot has developed within a few months after blowing-in, which has already compelled relining in two cases, and the probabilities are strongly against a long campaign in the other two. Since the hot spot in each case appeared in a position approximately opposite to the skip-hoist, and since the sizing, mentioned by Mr. Baker, is very apparent, it would seem as though there could be no doubt concerning the cause of the trouble. Nevertheless, there are some who cannot see it in that light; for the managers of two of these plants, at least, do not admit the existence of bad distribution, and have satisfied themselves by putting in cooling-plates, thickening the lining of the in-wall, and changing the brand of the fire-brick used for the construction of the walls. From observations of the clumping-action of the skip-hoist, and from subsequent inspection of the stock-distribution in the furnace itself, I arrived at the conclusion, some time ago, that no system of filling could be perfectly satisfactory where the stock is dumped into the hopper from one side, also that some

The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground "caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time. Early Pumping Operations CHIEF MINE The Chief Consolidated Mining Co. was organized in 1909, and for the following nine years ore was developed and mined from the 600 level down to the 1800 level, all above the permanent water table, the 1820 level. The ore occurs as extremely-irregular pipes of replacement ore in limestone, and to date a total of approximately 2 1/2 million tons of ore has been produced. The ore was highly oxidized down to the permanent water level, and some highly-oxidized ore runs occur beneath the permanent water table. In 1916, with extensive mining being done on the 1800 level, 20 ft above the water table, there were indications that a zone of secondary enrichment might exist below the water, and in order to follow the ore runs to greater depth, it was realized that arrangements would have to be Made to pump water to the surface. The original pumping installation was designed to pump 350 gpm in five stages against a 1900-ft head to the surface. By January 1919, the water had been lowered to the 1900 level and an excellent grade of silver-lead ore was being produced from the zone of secondary enrichment. At this point. the flow of water equalled the capacity of the pumps, and pumps of an additional 1000 gpln were installed to supplement the original system. By January 1920, the water had been lowered approximately 100 ft, and the total flow of water was 1000 gpm. The water was being pumped from many different places in the mine where ore was being followed downward, with 27 different pumps operating below the 1800 level, mainly Cameron air-driven sinker pumps. These first sinking pumps were cumbersome and inefficient, and each of the larger pumps weighed approximately three tons and required tremeridous volumes of compressed air. During this period, an exploration drift being extended north and west from the Chief shaft on the 1600 level encountered a large natural cavern some 2000 ft from the shaft. This cavern in places measured 60 ft in diameter. Sometime later the disposing of water into this cavern was suggested, and as an experiment to determine the results of such an operation, an attempt was Made to fill the cavern by pumping in a small volume of water, but the water disappeared as fast as it was discharged into the cavern. It was decided then to try the cavern as a drainage outlet for the entire volume of water being pumped to the surface, and the water apparently did not return to the mine workings. Subsequently water up to 3000 gpm was pumped into this cavern. An attempt was made to determine whether any water was being returned from the cavern to the lower workings, and 100 lb of sodium fluorescein salt was added to the water discharged into the cavern, but no trace of it was found in the drainage water in the mine. Results of another such test will be described later.

WHILE fulfilling professional engagements, my travels over this portion of the Transvaal have been quite extensive—always on horseback however, so that anything like a thorough investigation of the ground passed over has been necessarily impossible; still, the more minute examination of certain small areas, coupled with general observations, has enabled me to form some idea as to the prominent geological features of the country as a whole. Anything like a complete or comprehensive description is indeed out of the question, as there are no proper maps of the country and the facilities for observation are limited. A large plateau, called the "High Veldt," stretches from east to west across the Transvaal. It is generally level, or gently rolling, and has an average elevation of 6000 feet above the sea; it is destitute of timber, and in fact greatly resembles the western prairies of North America. THE Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting with this report the first of a series of cost comparisons which it plans to present to the Institute. The plan is to assemble maintenance cost on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mines, to arrange these costs by districts, to make comparisons between districts, and within districts. This particular report covers data with respect to mobile loading machines, including both "on-track" and "off-track" equipment. It is anticipated- in-fact, considerable data have already been accumulated-that next year complete maintenance costs by districts can be presented for complete loading units, including the various classes and combinations of on-track and off-track equipment. Data have also been collected with respect to some phases of maintenance methods and certain recommendations of the committee are included dealing with maintenance problems. In the assembly of these data more than 120 questionnaires were sent to operating companies through- out the United States. At the time the report was written 33 questionnaires had been returned with completed information and an additional group of companies had written that the information requested was not at present available but that they hoped to have such information available in the not far distant future.
