Shooting Soot from Stacks In the DuPont magazine of June, 1916, S. R. Russell describes a method of cleaning large smoke or kiln stacks which he calls "simple,. economical- slid-most efficient" and-which- he -says can- be used in either-lined or unlined stacks, brick or steel, without fear of injury to the stack or lining. He gives the following specific directions: "The gun can be made out of air old piece of shafting about 4 in. in diameter and 14 to 16 in. long. Bore a hole 1 ¾ in. in diameter and 10 in. long in the center of the piece. Then bore a small horizontal hole ¼ in. in diameter through the piece-to the bottom of the center bore. This hole serves as a touch hole for inserting the fuse. "The-whole thing can be mounted on a pedestal about 6 in. in diameter so that it will stand in an upright position. "The -method of operation is as follows: Pour some FFF Blasting Powder into the mouth of the cannon to about 2 in. from the top. Tamp to the collar with dry clay. , A short piece of fuse is inserted in the touch hole and in contact with the main powder charge. Open the flue door at the bottom of the stack, set the cannon on the bottom and in the center of the stack, light the fuse and close the flue door. "The explosion shakes and loosens the soot adhering to the sides, causing it to fall to the bottom. It can' then be removed through the flue opening.

ADDRESSING the Ohio Section at a recent meeting in Columbus, Ohio, R. C. Allen, executive vice-president for Oglebay, Norton & Co., Cleveland, spoke on "The Iron-Ore Industry of the Lake Superior Region in Prosperity and Depression." The speaker considered this region in connection with the problem of national security. This is the age of minerals; progress depends on them; and next to agriculture, the mineral industry is of prime importance. The United States has no shortage of minerals rather an over-supply; but many mines have been and are being exhausted. The shifting of the sources of supplies of minerals so important as copper, petroleum, and iron to other countries would create internal strains and affect international relations. There will be no early decline of ore mining in the Lake Superior region unless it is forced by unwise public policies. Iron ore is industrial strength and self-sufficiency. A study of economic geography is important for statesmen and mining men, because the minerals essential for peace and war are haphazardly or irregularly distributed throughout the world. Of these minerals, 75 per cent are owned by 10 per cent of the population, mainly peoples of Anglo-Saxon origin.

It seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel railsll and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook's paper on Metallography of Steel for U. S. Naval Ordnance.² Slate- colored inclusions are considered to be silicates, and dove-gray inclusions, manganese sulphide. To show the danger in the latter unqualified assumption, it should be sufficient to examine the edge of any piece of steel that is covered with a fairly thick scale, and that has been polished in such a way as to prevent the scale from breaking away entirely below the polished surface. St. Joe Minerals Corp. opened a new $30 million mine and mill at its Balmat-Edwards division in September. It will be the largest single zinc mining operation in the United States. St. Joe expects to produce more than 200,000 tons of zinc concentrates from its combined Balmat-Edwards mines and mills in 1972, equivalent to more than 100,000 tons of zinc metal-20% of U.S. mine production. The company has operated in Northern New York since 1926, having commenced zinc mining with its Edwards mine and mill, 12 miles from Balmat. They will continue to operate at a rate of 31,000 tons of concentrate per year. St. Joe started the Balmat facility in 1930 with two mine shafts and a mill, with a capacity of 2300 tpd.

An improved general rate equation for a one-ditnensional gas-solid system has been derived. Fov the veversihle interfacial chemical reaction, there are concentrations of gaseous reactant and product at the reacting zone to be considered. They have been calculated with the velations fuvnished by the constraints on the system, namely, quasi-steady state and equimolal counterdiffusion of the gases. The results of the diffusiori study of Evans, Watson, and ,Mason based on the "dusty gas" model have been applied here. The interfacial chemical reaction is taken as first-order with respect to the concentration of the gases involved. The equation has proper dependence on gas composition and on solid structure through the relative values of Knudsen and normal diffusivities. The existence of the total pressure gradient inside the specimen has been predicted and confirmed experimentally. In a previous communication' we introduced a general rate equation for gas-solid reactions by considering the contributions of chemical reaction at inter- phase boundaries and diffusion through the solid product layer simultaneously. These equations, for one-dimensional and spherical specimens, take care of the whole range continuously from purely diffusion control to purely chemical reaction control. In this paper we study only the one-dimensional system. The corresponding rate equation is reproduced here: Of the two terms on the right-hand side of Eq. [I], the first represents the contribution of interfacial chemical reaction and the second that of gaseous diffusion. The shortcomings of Eq. [I] are that in its derivation the interfacial chemical reaction was assumed to be irreversible and the diffusion rate of gaseous product was not considered. Any pressure effects building up within the porous media were also neglected. Evidently. these simplifying assumptions will limit the general applicability of these equations. The rate of reduction of iron oxide by hydrogen, for instance, is very sensitive to the concentration of water vapor in the main gas stream, as has been reported by cewan' and by Quets et a1.3 Furthermore, the gaseous phase at the reacting interface will contain an appreciable amount of the gaseous product of reaction. If this were not true, a sufficiently high concentration gradient for the outward diffusion of the gaseous product could not be maintained. With these shortcomings in mind, Eq. n approach to the study of the electrical properlies of drilling muds, their cakes and their filtrates was made by treating the drilling fluid as a porous medium. Lluring this study it was found that the weight pararneter was omitted from previous investigations on electrical properties. Patnode in 1949 made a similar approach to ,his investigation. His work showed that there was a variation of resistivity relationships with per cent Puid present in a given suspension. This present study ex-tends Patnode's investigation to one in terms of the solids fraction of the drilling fluids. Previous investigations were made on low weight muds where the effect of the rolids fraction was obscured. The following equationr were fitted to data taken from 94 field muds and 47 laboratory muds (see Tables I and 2). The parameter, C, is a complex function of the solidr content, or mud weight, of a drilling fluid. It was also found that for all drilling muds examined. A nomograph is presented combining Eqs. I and 2. INTRODUCTION It is generally recognized that the materials present in drilling muds affect the relationship between mud filtrate and mud resistivities. However, most electric log interpretations proceed with the assumption that the mud resistivity and temperature are the only important parameters needed to obtain a filtrate resistivity or a mud cake resistivity. Lamont1 suggests that only average relationships exist between mud cake, mud filtrate and mud resistivities. He indicates that there is limited accuracy when these intercorrelated factors are used since no other measure-able variable is apparent. A previous paper by Patnode indicates that drilling fluids may be considered to be a system of fluids in solid particles which may be correlated electrically in a manner similar to rock solids. 1 he equation for the resistivity factor. F = (per cent fluid) is satisfied for a given clay type in water, but the value of m varies as different materials are used in the water. The resistivity factor is not constant for a given amount of clay. As is suspected it varies as the solids fraction conducts electrical current. Since both weighting material and clay solids are present in commonly used drilling fluids, it is expected that both materials contribute to the variation of the m factor in Eq. 3. An extension of Patnode's work is presented in this paper to show some of the interrelations which exist between the resistivities of mud cake, mud filtrate and mud. Use of these data enable a more accurate calculation of mud filtrate and mud cake resistivities if only the mud resistivity and weight are measured. EXPERIMENTAL The measurements of mud weight, fluid and solids resistivity, alkalinity, and chloride content of mud samples were made in this research. Mud samples representing drilling fluids from 94 Louisiana and Texas wells (Table 1) and 47 laboratory-constructed systems (Table 2) were used in the experimentation. The measurements of the mud properties were made both in the field and in the laboratory. The tests on the properties of weight, alkalinity and chloride ion were standard tests as described by API specifications. A process has been developed which produces spodumene concentrates assaying 6.0 pct Li2O and 0.45 pct Fe2O3, with 70 to 75 pct recovery of spodumene. Two flotation separations are required: the simultaneous removal of mica, feldspar, and quartz as a froth product using a cationic collector, and the subsequent removal of iron-bearing minerals as a froth product while spodumene is depressed as a tailing. SINCE the close of World War II there have been numerous developments resulting in the increased use of lithium by industry. Notable among these has been the development of an industrial lubricant, based on lithium stearate, which is fluid at low temperatures, stable at high temperature, and insoluble in water. A new bleaching agent, lithium hypo-chlorite, has also been developed recently.' Other well-known uses are listed below: 1—Lithium oxide in ceramics reduces firing time, lowers melting temperatures, lowers thermal expansion, raises refractive index, and improves chemical resistivity. 2—Lithium carbonate and lithium strontium nitrate are used in pyrotechnics for their brilliant red color.' 3—Lithium chlorides and fluorides are used as fluxes for welding aluminum and magnesium.' 4—The affinity of lithium for nitrogen is the basis for a process used in purifying helium." 5— Lithium chlorides and bromides are used in air conditioning for their powers to absorb organic amines, ammonia, and smoke.6-—Lithium hydride has been used as a source of hydrogen to inflate life rafts and balloons used by the Air Forces and Navy.' 7— Lithium metal and lithium hydride are useful in the atomic energy program in connection with the production of the isotopes of hydrogen." During the 1942-45 period of World War 11, Solvay Process Co. operated a flotation plant with a daily capacity of 300 tons of ore for the production of spodumene concentrate near Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The operation was shut down upon reduction of wartime demand for lithium chemicals, and until recently there has been no production from the Carolinas. In April 1950 an investigation of the problem of spodumene flotation from North Carolina ores was begun at North Carolina State College Minerals Research Laboratory at Asheville, N. C. This laboratory, operating under the combined auspices of North Carolina State College, North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, undertook the spodumene project at the request of Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia. The work, involving a period of 15 months of intensive batch and pilot plant investigation, was completed in June 1951 and resulted in development of a process for concentration of spodumene by flotation which has been hereto unrecorded in the literature. A similar approach has been used before on iron, ilmenite, and other minerals, but the literature shows no record of its having been applied to spodumene. Parts of the process are now being used on a commercial scale at the Foote Mineral Co. plant near Kings Mountain, N. C., which has been in production since July 1951. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some of the results of the investigation. The Orebodies Spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur in a narrow belt 24.5 miles long and 1.8 miles wide extending southwestward from Lincolnton to Grover, N. C. According to statements judged to be conservative, the tin-spodumene belt of the Carolinas contains an estimated 4,300,000 tons of pegmatite ore averaging 15 pct spodumene. This amounts to "a reserve of at least 650,000 tons of spodumene (more than 20,000 tons of metallic lithium) to a depth of 100 ft."' This figure includes only bodies having an average thickness of 35 ft and length of 550 ft. There are hundreds of pegmatites in the belt, many of which are less than 10 ft wide. The largest pegmatite in the area has a maximum thickness of 395 ft and maximum length of 3250 ft.' These larger pegmatites are composed principally

AS the available remaining properties of iron ore reserves on the Mesabi Range are opened up for mining, the various properties located under lake beds are brought nearer an active status. The actual physical problems involved in stripping these properties do not act as a deterrent so much as the legal and political problems that are encountered. When it is proposed to destroy a natural lake that has been used by the public for many years, much local as well as state opposition may be encountered regarding its destruction. Public hearings must be held and some adverse publicity is likely to result. The ownership of the ore under the lake and the rights of the abutting property owners must be settled, and protection from damage caused by a disturbance in surface and subsurface drainage is likely to be demanded by property owners some distance from the proposed mine area. The Embarrass Mine, located near Biwabik, Minn., falls into this classification. A portion of the orebody lies under what was formerly Syracuse Lake, this body of water having been removed in the process of stripping the mine. An additional problem in the case of a meandered body of water is the establishment of a meander line that can be projected downward as mining progresses to form the basis for a satisfactory division between lake bed and upland ore shipments for royalty purposes. Fig. 1 illustrates the complications encountered in maintaining these divisions. A balance point was agreed upon in the center of the lake to make an equable division of lake bed ore to the abutting properties. The entire lake bed has since been adjudged the property of Minnesota. Lake Characteristics Lake bed stripping problems with which this paper is concerned necessarily are limited to a specific type of lake, namely the glacial lakes of the Lake Superior region. One characteristic common to these bodies of water is a deposit of fine black mud or silt on the bottom, frequently underlain by a layer of impervious blue clay. This is also true of the muskeg areas of the region, which present almost identical problems as lakes in stripping. The actual removal of the water and the lake bed material is a routine matter more or less standardized as to equipment, and the period of time required can be estimated easily on the basis of volume and capacity. More important than the foregoing is the execution of preliminary work, and above all, the timing involved. An account could be prepared based entirely on statistical and cost data which would give a very fair picture of the time required and cash outlay needed to effect the removal of a body of water preliminary to stripping the orebody. However, the real interest from the standpoint of the operator and the engineer who carry responsibility for completion of the job lies in the unexpected emergencies and the action of various materials involved in the stripping when the balance has been upset through diversion of water courses and the reduction of the lake level. Runoff and Drainage Lakes are located in natural basins that catch all the rain water and runoff water for a considerable area. Where a lake is involved having an inlet and outlet or a sizeable water course running through it, the drainage area may include a watershed covering many square miles. All available data then must be collected to supply a history extending over as many years for which information can be gathered on the flow of streams, annual rain and snowfall, and most important, the peak flows to be expected. Where the diversion of a stream around the stripping area is a part of the problem, this last factor is of great importance since it controls the cross-section to be selected for the diversion channel and the volume to be removed in its excavation, as well as affecting the hydraulic considerations to be met in the design of the completed channel. Characteristic material in the overburden found at the Embarrass Mine is illustrated in Fig. 2. Well Pumping Pumping from the well holes was started well in advance of the draining of the lake. Fig. 3 shows a gradual lowering of the water table with no noticeable fluctuations during the period in which the lake was being dewatered. Unfortunately, because of tight ground, a maximum flow to the wells was not maintained. This retarded the rate at which the water table was reduced so that in the course of stripping the excavation soon extended below the water table, and the great bulk of the pumping was handled from a system of sumps in the pit itself. Any dewatering program projected by prepumping from wells, a glorified well point system, would have to be started well in advance of the stripping to be of any great advantage. Preliminary drainage of the surface over the mine area is entirely apart from the actual elimination of the lake bed itself. Since the lake is what is called a perched water table because of the impervious character of the lake bottom, the adjoining surface may be dewatered below the surface of the existing lake and the flow will not be affected by the proximity of that body of water. The application of engineering methods to the problems connected with drilling and producing in the oil industry has led to the development of the science that is variously termed "petroleum engineering," "production engineering," "petroleum production engineering," and even Itpolitical engineering." It would require much detail to enumerate the qualifications of a petroleum engineer, just as it would for an engineer in any major industry. For those who have a genuine liking for the oil industry, there is a wide selection of pathways to achievement. The oil industry is now highly specialized. Its products are necessary to all civilized people and are indispensable in the security of our nation and also in the well-being of our families. The business structure of our country depends in a large measure upon oil, and the welfare of this group as individuals is certainly linked with the welfare of the oil industry. What Is the Trend of Engineering? The oil industry offers a fertile field of opportunity for engineering; probably more so than any other industry. The sciences of geology, physics, chemistry and mathematics are all used in some phase of the oil industry and to a very considerable extent in the production division, which embraces the geological, drilling and producing departments. In drilling and production alone, research programs of considerable magnitude are being carried on at this time, and no doubt the future will see a great deal more of this kind of work. Through the cooperation of the engineer, the equipment manufacturer, and the American Petroleum Institute, immense savings have been made by the standardization of drilling and production equipment. Drilling equipment in itself offers a wide scope for study, in that continued efforts are being made to improve the equipment so that it can be made to drill faster and to greater depths. The improvements in drilling equipment are required because new reserves of oil are being found at progressively greater depths. The production of sand in an oil well increases operating costs because of abnormal wear in subsurface equipment, the necessity for frequent cleanouts, and the need for a means of disposing of the sand. Moreover, removal of sand from the zone can bring about the creation of cavities from which bodies of formation, sand or shale, may slough into the hole, endangering the shutoff, impeding production or collapsing the liner. The procedure known as gravel packing is attracting attention as a means of controlling these factors and contributing to the productive life of a well. That gravel packing is now substantially beyond the preliminary stage on the Pacific Coast is reflected in the 191,000 bbl. of oil produced monthly by the 66 gravel-packed wells in 11 different producing sectors. Reasons fob Gravel Packing Gravel packing, if properly carried out, can be expected to provide the following benefits: 1. Prevent the movement of sand and thus eliminate sand production and sand fills, and prevent the formation of cavities. 2. Provide a practical, relatively inexpensive, large-diameter hole, which will provide well-known theoretical advantages. 3. Support the walls of the hole by completely filling the space between the liner and the formation, regardless of its irregularities, and afford a support for liners. 4. Provide for more efficient pumping operations in wells by: (a) possibly utilizing the gravel as a gas trap in pumping gaseous fluids, (b) allowing deep submergence of the pump into the oil zone. In a conventional well—that is, where the liner is set in an open hole-. even though perforation sizes are chosen according to known rules based on analysis of sand grains from samples from the zone, there is likely to be some production of sand. M R. WEIGEL'S present position as Chairman of the Institute's nonmetallics group arises from twenty years of experience in that field, from 1921 to 1926 as mineral technologist for the Bureau of Mines, in Washington, and since then for the Missouri Pacific R.R. Co., with headquarters in St. Louis. This rail- road serves an extensive region in and about the southern central states, from Omaha to the extreme southern tip of Texas, and from southern Illinois to Pueblo, Colorado, and it is Mr. Weigel's job to get as much freight for the road as possible from the mineral industry in this area. Much of the present and potential mineral production is in the non- metallic group.

THERE have been two important accomplishments of the Truman administration; the Hoover Commission report on inefficiency and waste in government and the report of the Paley Commission on the natural resources of the United States. Both reports are in the interest of the American people and should transcend the boundaries of political parties. Both reports are starting points for the formulation of policies which must be continuously revised to meet changing conditions. Regardless of the outcome of the election the principles embodied in these two great documents must be kept alive. The Paley report is right in our own bailiwick of mineral raw materials and it behooves us to study it carefully as our responsibility to posterity. To those in the mining industry who have limited their field of observation to moving rock or to metal prices it may come as a surprise that our production of such staples as copper, lead, and zinc has fallen behind increased requirements to the point that substantial tonnages must be imported. Iron ore is next on the list and everybody knows that such metals as tin, tungsten, chromium, manganese, nickel, and cobalt are imported almost exclusively. The crisis in raw materials pointed up by the Paley report has been reported annually by Elmer Pehrson and others to small gatherings at the Mineral Economics Division sessions at the Annual Meeting for as long as we can remember. In September 1949, the United Nations Economic and Social Council held an international resource conference at Lake Success which disclosed these same grave conclusions: - Consumption of raw materials is multiplying at an alarming rate, faster than discoveries or replacements are being made. - Production has been wasteful and utilization lavishly beyond enginee¬ing and practical requirements. - Industrialized nations are depleted and many raw materials consumed by industry are not found in the industrialized countries. - Nations formerly exporters of raw materials are increasingly building their own consuming industries. - Political forces in the world are limiting access to raw materials. The Paley Commission selecting the quarter century, 1950 to 1975, to project raw material requirements for the United States, pointed out obstacles to meeting these requirements, and made recommendations for procurement. It is not important that we disagree that cobalt consumption will reach 344 pct of present, or fluorspar 187 pct when iron and ferroalloys are only expected to increase 75 pct. What is important it that the fabulous appetite of the United States for mineral raw materials has consumed more since World War I than was consumed by the entire world in all recorded history prior to 1914. And, unless the people of the United States are satisfied to remain at their present standard of living (which is unthinkable) this consumption is correctly plotted by the Paley Commission as continuing to expand. If the U. S. is to continue on a course of progress, it must procure raw materials wherever it can at the lowest possible cost. Natural resources are clearly an area in which the broadest cooperation between industry and government must exist to achieve efficient exploitation, economic consumption, and expansion of sources of supply. The message of the Paley report requires action comparable to that of the North Atlantic Pact. Its implication is as significant as military preparedness. It is a world problem. It is a mining engineering problem. Don't let it die!

Extra-low carbon iron sheet, when deformed and annealed, undergoes exaggerated or abnormal grain growth in the critically deformed regions of the sheet. This exaggerated pmth occurs, for low strains (3 to 6 pct), only in sheet which has a fine dispersion of precipitates in the subsurface region of the sheet and fewer and coarser precipitates in the sheet interior. These particles have been identified as manganese sulfides. Wing the anneal, grains near the surface are gvowth-inhibited by the fine particles but the grains in the interior are free to grow normally. With the additional driving force provided by the strain energy, the interior grains first grow into the small subsurface pains. Eventually, these growing grains grow completely through the sheet. Calculations of limiting grain sizes at various values of strain indicate that a volume fraction of precipitates in excess of 10-' would be required to eliminate exaggerated growth in material strained to 10 pct. OPEN-COIL annealing has made decarburization of sheet steel both efficient and economically practical. Use of such material for porcelain-enameling stock is one of many possible applications of low-carbon iron since carbon in steel is deleterious to porcelain-enameling properties.' However, the extra-low carbon iron presently available presents another problem, that of exaggerated grain growth in regions where the sheet has been deformed as by bending or stretching. In exaggerated grain growth a few grains start to absorb their neighbors and these may become very much larger than the average grains of the sheet. Other names for exaggerated grain growth are coarsening, critical grain growth, secondary recrystallization, abnormal grain growth, or discontinuous grain growth. While this grain growth does not affect the enameling qualities of the low-carbon iron sheet, their presence results in a marked reduction of tensile-yield strength in the region of the sheet containing the large grains. The loss of tensile yield strength may render the material unsuitable for many applications . This report describes the results of a study undertaken to determine the cause of the exaggerated grab growth in extra-1ow carbon iron and, if possi- ble, to prescribe practical procedures for its prevention. GENERAL THEORY The driving force for exaggerated grain growth is the grain boundary free energy. This driving force is proportional to (l/rl + l/r2) where rl and r2 are the mutually perpendicular radii of curvature of the boundary between the growing grain and the grain being consumed. Thus, the greater the difference in size between the growing grain and the matrix grains, the higher the driving force for grain growth. If, however, the matrix grains are free to grow simultaneously, the driving force for exaggerated growth will be diminished. Stability toward growth of the matrix grains may be caused by a) a strong single orientation texture (texture inhibition),' b) a dispersed second phase,3"5 c) the thickness effect,' or d) intergranular segregation.7"9 As exaggerated growth occurs when growth of the matrix grains has been slowed by the stabilizing processes mentioned above, there must be an additional factor acting to promote growth of a few of the grains to the point where they are enough larger than the matrix grains that boundary energy driving forces are sufficient to cause continued growth. For instance, at the annealing temperature, growth-inhibiting inclusions may slowly dissolve and coalesce. Eventually, a grain boundary becomes unlocked and migration occurs at the expense of neighboring grains. Or, an additional driving force may be supplied to some of the grains if the material is strained. Then, since some grains will be strained less than others, the difference in strain energy between adjacent grains may be sufficient to overcome boundary locking and allow growth of the grains with lower strain energies. In the present study, therefore, such factors as the presence or absence of dispersed phases, the nature of the exaggerated growth, and the effect of strain have been considered. In recent years such a mud has been developed and used successfully for drilling the oil horizons of wells in various Calilornia fields. There are several types of oil-base mud, but only the type that is currently used to any appreciable extent will be considered at this time. The oil-base drilling-mud compositions used by Shell Oil Company, Incorporated have been covered by several patent applications on which patents are expected to issue at an early date. The purpose of this paper is to present data on the fundamental design of the mud; the ingredients used and their specifications; the effect of ingredient concentration on physical properties; the selection of the proper mud; the facilities needed for handling the mud; and a general discussion on drilling with oil-base mud. In view of the early stage of development of oil-base mud, the great number of vari- ables, and the almost unlimited possible combinations of these. variables, which in turn require extensive laboratory study, there are certain irregularities and omis. sions in the data presented here. However, it is believed that sufficient data are at hand to permit a fairly complete analysis of the characteristics of oil-base muds. In view of the excellent plastering properties of oil-base mud when properly proportioned, its use should: (I) minimize the possibility of impairing the natural flow potentialities of the producing horizon such as that resulting from infiltration of water from water-base muds; (2) permit smaller clearances for setting liners, since the mud sheath has no appreciable thickness; (3) eliminate the possibility of clogging the perforations of the liner with thick mud sheath; (4) facilitate the removal of the mud sheath from the walls of the hole, for its mud sheath has no appreciable strength; (5) assist in drilling through formations, such as "heaving shale," where water wetting appears to be a source of difficulty. (6) permit cores to be obtained without contamination from drilling water. Published tables of jaw crusher capacities are compiled for the most part from field performance data, interspersed with interpolations, extrapolations, various safety factors, and other modifications. Such a table attempts to balance and equalize field data from widely Werent materials, with differences of crushability, efficiency of feeding, sizing of the feed, and so on. The tests described in this paper were undertaken with the objectives of checking previously reported capacities; of studying the effects of various factors upon the capacity, including jaw plate curvature; and, if possible, of deriving a general capacity equation. Such an equation has been derived from the data obtained in these tests. It is given together with factors for its use. While more accuracy than is usually required may be obtained by careful application of the equation, it is of simple form and provides a convenient reference plane upon which the potential capacity of various crushers may be compared, and with which operating adjustments may be made on existing installations. The principal deviation in these tests from the usual approach consists of a laboratory technique which has been developed for the production of selected capacity data. Recording instruments are connected to crushers in such a manner that a continuous record is produced which discloses the inherent maximum capacity of the crusher and shows capacity decreases caused by hangups. The capacity effects of various crushing conditions are made more evident by this arrangement. The recording instruments were first applied to a standard sized 10 by 7 in. Blake-type jaw crusher in the laboratory. Suficient tests were run on this with various combinations of setting, throw, speed, feed sizing, shapes of jaw plates, and other operating features, to establish the individual effect of each on the capacity. The instruments later were applied to much larger crushers in the field, through the excellent cooperation of the managements in the Mesabi Iron Range, and data were obtained which closely corroborated the established trends. The capacity equation resulting from the test work is made up of a series of factors, each representing the contributing effects of setting, speed, width of chamber, nip angle, feed density, type of jaw plates, stroke, and the overall operating technique. Fortunately, most of these factors were revealed to be in direct proportion to the capacity for straight plate chambers. This equation is also applicable to chambers using curved plates, with slight modifications resulting from the capacity limitation of the upper portion of the crushing chamber. The equation has been derived from tests covering a very wide range of feed density and hardness. It has been found valid, providing that the feed material is either nonpacking in character, as is usual, or allowance in designing the crushing chamber shape has been made to accommodate this characteristic. Preliminary investigation has shown that the equation is also applicable to single-toggle jaw crushers. Conditions of this are that the top of the flywheel rotate towards the top of the crusher opening, and that the horizontal motion of the swing jaw relative to the stationary jaw at the discharge opening be considered as the stroke. Theory, operational characteristics, and indicated precision and accuracy of analytical methods based on vacuum extraction, equilibrium pressure, and combustion approaches are reviewed. At the present time vacuum extraction at 1400°C and the equilibrium pressure method are recommended for determination of hydrogen in titanium and titanium-rich alloys. UNTIL a few years ago the role of hydrogen in titanium was an unknown factor with regard to its effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the metal. However, following the work of Jaffee and othersa-" it is now generally acknowledged that hydrogen has a degrading effect on titanium and its alloys. The chief manifestations are a decrease in impact strength in -systems and delayed cracking in a-ß systems. Since hydrogen does have a de- grading effect on titanium it is essential to control it within tolerable limits. It then follows that procedures for quantitative estimation of hydrogen are a primary requirement for the industry. For greatest benefit these methods should be simple, rapid, and precise. In addition to having these virtues, methods must be easy to duplicate in both equipment and technique to gain widespread use. After inherent accuracy has been established, the, required precision to make a method acceptable is dependent largely on the nature of the work at hand. The purpose of this paper is to describe a new process for the refining of secondary copper-base metals and a specially designed high-temperature electric-resistor furnace used in the process for the distillation of zinc from these metals. The process was used for the conversion of nickel silver to cupronickel and to recover the zinc content in metallic form. It also proved applicable and economical for the treatment of scrap brass for separating and reclaiming the copper and zinc. The relatively large furnace developed for the distillation of zinc is described in detail, for it made economically possiblc the direct recovery of metallic zinc from scrap brass, which is a new step in the processing of such material. Considerable interest has been shown in the utilization of the distillation furnace for other metallurgical processes, where it is of advantage to operate in a controlled neutral or reducing atmosphere, or to avoid having the processed metal in contact with refractories other than carbon, or to operate at temperatures between 3000 and 4000°F. Purpose of Development It was recognized early in the war effort that nickel would become a critical metal. therefore all nickel stock and alloys containing relatively high percentages of nickel were frozen immediately. Among these alloys were considerable quantities of various grades of nickel silver, an alloy containing copper, nickel, zinc, and in some grades lead, also minor amounts of iron, manganese and other constituents. At the time there was no existing plant or process to eliminate the zinc, lead, and minor constituents so as to convert this metal to cupronickel, one of the important alloys needed by the U. S. Navy for condenser parts. Therefore the Bureau of Industrial Conservation of the War Production Board requested the executives of the leading nonferrous metal companies to have their metallurgical staffs study the problem of converting this metal to cupronickel conforming to U. S. Navy Specification 44T40. The composition specified therein is as follows: nickel, 29 to 32 per cent; zinc, 1.00; iron, 0.00 to 0.60; lead, 0.05; tin, 1.20; manganese, 0.00 to 1.00; total of other elemcnts (maximum). 0.50; copper, remainder. The problem in converting these alloys to cupronickel was the elimination of zinc, lead, iron, manganese, and other elements without appreciable loss of nickel to slags or other by-products. Revere Copper and Brass Incorporated, through its Research and Development Department, undertook to solve this problem. A Government-owned plant was built at Rome, N. Y., and there the conversion was made successfully.
