ATHOUGH turquoise mining was, so far as we know, the first large, well-organized mining operation,' gem mining, from the Roman con-quest of Egypt until the opening of the South African pipe diamond mines some 50 years ago, was largely carried on' by individuals 01' small companies in a relatively primitive way. Now" however" gem mining does not yield in efficiency or in scale of operations to the mining of other mineral products. In 1926 the diamond mines of the world milled some 9,000,000 cu. yd. and produced 0,43 cu. yd. diamonds, a remarkable example of concentration. The Premier Diamond Mining Co. up to Oct. 31, 1927, had milled 116,455,550 loads (each of 16 cu. ft.) from which 26,-217,144 carats of diamonds" worth £29,897,971 2s, 9d., were recovered. The Burma Ruby Mines, Ltd., operating sever-al alluvial mines in Burma in 1911-12, mined and milled 1,479,845 truckloads of gemmiferous earth for 15c. per load. We of the industry can there-fore, with good grace, disclose some of the myths and also describe some of the primitive mining methods of the, dark ages of our industry. The methods, so far as I know, were not patented, and if they were, the patents have expired, so that engineers in other branches of the art are free to use them if they see fit.

The history of the Bunker Hill mine dates back to August 26, 1885, when Noah S. Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill orebody on the hillside of Milo Gulch above the present town of Wardner, Idaho. A small concentrator was erected in 1886, and before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d'Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma smelter at Tacoma, Wash., to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917, a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected, and a modern electrolytic zinc reduction plant was built in 1927-1928 by the Sullivan Mining Co. which was 50 pct owned (and now totally owned) by the Bunker Hill Co.

I was delighted to be invited to be patron of this Joint Conference, but the challenging task you have set yourselves, and your speakers' depth of expertise, deny anyone, even the patron, the opportunity to be patronizing. Australia's history has been inextricably linked with the fortunes of our great mining industry. That link will remain. Just as the gold rushes of the last century, and the discoveries at Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill changed the lives of generations, so the more recent development activity in iron ore, bauxite, nickel, coal, and uranium are having a significant impact on the lives of Australians today. The minerals industry has contributed to Australia's jobs and prosperity. Mining is not free of problems, but so long as safeguards are strong and appropriate the net benefits the mining industry brings Australia will continue to be enormous. We rely on our mining industry to find, prove, develop and sell our minerals profitably, and my Government is committed to maintaining a healthy mining industry. In the past year there have been positive signs of a resurgence in exploration and development. The North-West Shelf ventures are spending $50 million on a feasibility study to work out the extent of future investment in that project; exploration expenditure for minerals other than petroleum increased by 34 per cent in 1976-77 to $134 million; petroleum exploration increased dramatically last year almost doubling to $94 million-this year it is projected to reach $125 million.

CHARGING of an open-hearth heat is begun as soon as possible after the previous heat has been tapped. Ordinarily, about 40 min. is required to drain and dress the furnace hearth, make up the tap hole, and perform routine repairs of the banks. Repairs to the upper back wall and to the front wall and jambs can ordinarily be done while the first scrap charge is being heated and are therefore allowed to wait in order to save furnace time. Any major repairs required on the hearth or other parts of the furnace necessitate longer delays, because such repairs must be made while the furnace is empty. Although charging practice varies considerably in detail with the type and proportions of scrap and iron used, many factors are common to all varieties of' charge. Such general considerations are dealt with first. GENERAL CHARGING PRACTICE Charge materials are discussed in detail in Chapter IV; the present chapter is concerned with the charging, melting, and proportioning of the raw materials in the various types of furnace practice. Charging Equipment and Stock Handling. The physical equipment available for loading and weighing the stock, transporting it to the furnace, and charging it may have a major effect on charging practice. Limestone, scrap, and all other solid melting stock are charged mechanically by means of equipment described in Chapter I (see also Fig. 18, page 33). It is generally desirable to charge the scrap about as fast as the physical volume can be got into the furnace. A limiting factor may be the height to which the scrap may be piled in the furnace without deflecting the flame to such an extent that it will impinge on the roof or walls and thus damage the refractories, but light scrap may often be piled up near the roof since the flame usually "cuts it down" rapidly before impingement on any roof area can persist long enough to do appreciable harm. The need for standard test methods in the minerals beneficiation industry is growing with the increasing complexity of our processes and the more stringent requirements imposed on the quality and uniformity of our products. Although solutions of our problems have never been easy, they will become increasingly difficult to achieve unless we can develop a reliable and reproducible set of test methods. Historically speaking, our need was greatest for methods of chemical analysis. As these methods developed, they improved our ability to determine the grade of ore and measure the effect of our beneficiation attempts. The entire concept of grade and recovery is only as old as chemical analysis. Then came physical measurements. Each new concept in minerals beneficiation was related to certain properties and required corresponding test methods: specific density for jigging, magnetic susceptibility for magnetic separation, and tumbler strength for pellets. And associated with each process was the need for size determination. Size measurement is probably the first physical test ever conceived, and yet we are still improving on it. Dry sieving was quite acceptable for direct-shipping ores, but we had to go to wet sieving to control pelletizing and flotation. Subsieve analyzers have extended our routine measurements to the subsieve sizes, hut not below a few microns. As we all know, the solution of slimes- beneficiation and pollution-abatement problems is hampered by the lack of reliable and reproducible test methods in the fine-particle size range.

The labor policy of the Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey) is founded first of all on paying at least the prevailing scale of wages for similar work in the community; on the eight-hour day at the refinery, with time and one-half for overtime; one day's rest in seven; sanitary and up-to-date working conditions; just treatment assured each employee; opportunity for training and advancement; payment of accident benefits beyond the amount prescribed by the State compensation law; health supervision by a competent medical staff; payment of sickness benefits after one year's service; coöperation with employees in promoting thrift and better social and housing. conditions; and assurance of a generous annuity at the age of 65, guaranteed for life after 20 years of service. Most of these features have been a part of the company's policy for many years, but it is only during the past two years that the cooperation of employees in determining these matters has been definitely assured through industrial representation. Industrial representation, in the Standard Oil Co. (N. J.), is a principle rather than a procedure. It is built upon the belief that personal association of those interested in any problem leads to a mutual understanding and a fair decision as to what is right. Fully believing in this principle, representatives of employees and representatives of management evolved a simple plan, the basis of which is that it gives every individual employee representation at joint conferences on problems and fundamental principles affecting all those interested in the industry. It is based on cooperation, not antagonism; its operation makes perfectly clear both to management and to employees that their interests are identical, and not at variance with the interests of the stockholders, and that mutual understanding and cooperation insure progress and success for all. Furthermore, experience has definitely shown that representatives of the employees are not only alert for the employees' interests but are as keen as the representatives of the management in determining and insisting upon fairness to the employer. In the summer of 1888 it was the fortune of the writer to present the subject of the desirability of establishing a set of samples of steel, which should be analyzed with extreme care, in order that they might become standards to which scientific and commercial analyses of iron and steel could be subsequently referred; also, that greater uniformity in the results of analyses might be brought about, since these standards would bear towards analytical methods somewhat the position which the original units of weight and length, the gramme and meter, or the pound and yard, preserved in Paris, London, and Washington, do to the mechanical arts. The plan met with hearty co-operation, with the result that com mittees were appointed in Sweden, Germany, France, England, and America, to receive the material and to see that the necessary au alyses were executed. OPENING of numerous stripping operations in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other districts, particularly outside the Middle West and Southwest where the large-scale stripping mines predominate, holds the limelight for the year 1940. Several factors are responsible for this expansion. One is the scarcity of untested and undeveloped properties in this central field. Another has been the development of earth-moving and preparation equipment suitable for these smaller tonnage tracts. Draglines of the Walker type, small long-range .hovels, and large-capacity tractor- drawn scrapers have to be considered. Wash boxes, designed for light tonnages, costing a few thousand dollars, have made their contribution.

MANY interesting papers, opportunity of seeing o1d friends, and an exposition showing all that is latest in equipment, all were factors in bringing a large crowd to Detroit during "Metal Week," October 2-6. The Institute's Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals Divisions held technical sessions at the Statler Hotel on October 4 and 5, and that hotel was also headquarters for the American Society for Steel Treating and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, both of which also had technical sessions. The American Welding Society and the Wire Association met at the Book-Cadillac Hotel, and the exposition was staged at Convention Hall, out Woodward Avenue. All in all it was a big week for men interested in metal working. One of them stated to your reporter on the train en route to Detroit that this was the one convention that he never missed, and doubtless others felt the same way about it.

The most commonly used material for terminals in spark plugs is commercial nickel wire, because of its relatively high temperature of melting, excellent heat conductivity, and slow rate at which the metal is oxidized, even upon continued heating at high temperatures. The grade commonly used for this purpose averages 97 per cent. nickel, the remainder being manganese, cobalt, iron, copper, with traces of other impurities always found in commercial nickel. A peculiar and interesting type of deterioration that occurs in these nickel terminals during the service life of the spark plug was recently brought to the attention of the Bureau of Standards. Commercial spark plugs vary greatly in their size and shape and the terminals differ considerably as to their relative size, shape, number, and arrangement with respect to one another. Although this defect was studied in detail in only one form of spark plug, the deterioration is a characteristic of the material, i.e., of nickel wire, rather than of the particular type of spark plug in which it was noted and studied. The mechanical features of the plugs, however, have a considerable bearing on the time required for the deterioration to become serious. The results of this study of the deterioration of nickel terminals in service should be of value to the makers of all types of spark plugs in which the terminals are made of this metal. CharacteR of Deterioration of WIres During Service Macroscopic Appearance and Properties of Changed Wire.—The nickel terminals in which the deterioration was studied were taken from spark plugs having a central terminal with the ground or side terminals attached firmly at both ends to the shell of the plug. In some of the plugs, two side terminals were used, one on each side of the central one. Although both terminals were found to have deteriorated to some extent, the attack of the central one was quite negligible compared to that of the side ones. These latter wires had developed, in service, transverse cracks that, in many cases, were as sharp and definite as a knife-cut. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. IRON ore is the cause of the present trouble in Morocco. At least three nations are interested in the outcome and private syndicates have been active. The iron deposits are found in that mountainous northern coast line known as the Rif. This is an uplift that has been cut through, by the northward drainage, representing an ancient land surface. Erosion has produced .a fiordlike coast, which circum- stance has aided contraband' traffic to the tribes dominated by Abd-el-Krim, the chief of the clan of the Beni Urriaguel, near the center of 'the north coast, opposite Alhucemas. The iron deposits are extensive in the territory of the Beni Urriaguel. They were "located," if such a term is permissible, many years ago. The first arrangements, through direct contracts with the tribal chieftains, have been reinforced by compliance with the subsequent code under the Spanish protectorate in 1914. Under those terms, the location had to be made through the Arbitral Commission sitting in Paris. These locations, or "denouncements," were made by the I-louse of Mannesmann, of Hamburg.

As a service to its readers, MINING ENGINEERING is publishing the mineral industry portion of the 1957 list of Accredited Undergraduate Engineering Curricula in the United States. This list, revised annually, is issued by the Education Committee of the Engineers Council for Professional Development, and covers all phases of engineering education. The AIME is actively represented on ECPD, which was jointly organized by the Founder Societies and various other groups interested in the professional recognition of engineers. ECPD is merely authorized by its constituent organizations to publish a list of accredited engineering curricula for use as desired by those agencies which require such a list. It has no authority to impose any restrictions or standardizations on schools. (Date following school refers to year of initial accrediting.)

THE New Cornelia Copper Co. is mining and treating a 'monzonite " porphyry" copper deposit that is all hard rock. The oxidized surface shell, which constitutes the leachable part of the orebody, is measurably more resistent to crushing and comminution processes than is the underlying sulfide portion. The siliceous ribs running through the whole orebody are harder to crush than the main mass and there is no soft crumbly material to furnish the large volume of primary fines that features the crusher feeds of most other porphyry properties. New Cornelia ore reaches the primary crushers with a greater. proportion of large 'pieces. When the New Cornelia company first equipped its 'property, it used the following machines and flow , scheme to reduce the ore to leaching size:

Prospecting methods used in Tennessee have gradually improved with the years, as required by depletion of the easily accessible and shallow deposits and the universal trend toward mechanization, and as necessitated by exploring deeper beds, often occurring under limestone and flinty overburden. In the early days it was a very simple matter to dig pits by hand, using a plentiful supply of local farm labor to expose relatively shallow deposits of "brown rock" under shallow clayey overburden that would stand up without timbering. Visual inspection of the exposed phosphate and expert judgment of the "grade" analysis, aided by a "biting" test to reveal presence of unwanted silica, furnished most of the information required. All this might be helped by a few samples sent to the local chemist† who supplemented his income by judicious trading or tanning a few bear skins. The extra curricula activities did not affect the accuracy of the analysis which hold up even under present day standards. Some shot and core drilling was done in Hickman County, mostly for the limestone-like blue Phosphate deposits. The next step was the use of a 4-in. posthole auger, hand operated as described by Guenther, followed by a completely mechanized rig, as described by Pickard. Both these methods are practically adapted to the prospecting of the relatively soft brown rock deposits at moderate depths of clay overburden. For prospecting in areas of deeper overburden, such as are often found in Hickman County, up to 150 or even 200-ft depths, a modified core-drilling method is described by Guenther. Johnston describes a special diamond-drilling technique, developed by TVA, to penetrate flint horizons, which was adopted by the International Minerals in chemical corporation to prospect in Hickman County where deposits had previously been prospected at considerable expense and with difficulty, by small, temporary, hand-dug shafts.

One of the more challenging aspects of the unfolding age of space travel centers about the opportunity for man to use the natural resources of other worlds. The first of the extraterrestrial worlds to be exploited will be the moon. After only a scant few thousand years of scratching the earth's crust, man will embark upon a venture that for centuries has excited the imagination of many (while staggering that of most) and may become a reality within the next decade. There has never been a time when so much money and effort will have been expended to exploit an area about which so little is known. Paradoxically, this effort combines much of the detached objectivity so typical of our analytical time with the proverbial optimism of the indefatigable prospector. As the earliest manned lunar missions will be brief and exploratory in nature, astronauts will not be expected to attempt to exploit any of the possible lunar natural resources. In later missions, with a more extended period of time available for the astronauts to stay on the moon, it may be desirable or even necessary to "live off the land". The resulting exploitation of lunar resources will be intended primarily to reduce the dependence of manned missions upon terrestrial logistic support and to reduce the cost of maintaining lunar bases.

The following description is based on the film's narrative script: The film opens with a description of the terrain--tens of thousands of yearly snows compressed into glacial ice, stretching further than the eye can see. A single massive frozen cap--1 812 992 km2 (700 thou- sand sq miles) covering most of the land mass of the world's largest island, christened strangely enough--Greenland. Greenlanders comprise more than two-thirds of the 40 thousand Danish subjects who brave the elements in the Arctic Circle. Along the coastal fringe where the Gulf Stream sheds its last vestige of tropical warmth to temper Greenland summers, tiny villages survive In virtual isolation. Jagged fjords and creeping glaciers are barriers to conventional communication. There are no roads through the year-round ice. Yet, when there is wealth in the land, there are people to tame it, harnessing those unrelenting forces of nature if they can building and surviving in spite of them if they must. Near the tiny site of Marmorilik in west Greenland a gathering of men from places more benign came to challenge a sheer, frozen rock named Black Angel Mountain to tap a deposit of lead and zinc ore. As far back as the 19301s, surface investigation showed zinc and lead sulfides in the vicinity. In the mid-60's mountaineering geological examinations were made and deep-hole drilling, directed by Cominco Ltd., of Canada, confirmed the presence of an ore body, 600 m (2000 ft) above the fjord. Our merchant marine is rapidly outgrowing our consular service, according to Edward N. Hurley, Chairman of the United States Shipping Board, who urges that steps be taken immediately to provide facilities abroad for handling the millions of tons of shipping which will be afloat under the American flag in peaceful trade when the war is over. When peace is restored and our present tonnage is scattered over world trade routes, the consular service will be inadequate to handle our ships: Besides, it will have to work against the handicaps of obsolete shipping regulations and, in many cases, lack of experience. There are nearly 100 pages in the United States consular regulations dealing with shipping platters. . Many of these regulations are based on old treaties and many of them are obsolete. There are also differences between treaties with various countries. Our consuls often lack authority to handle matters involving the interests of our sailors and shipowners. Before we can operate a modern merchant marine we must revise, standardize, and simplify this whole mass of regulations and bring them up to the efficiency of other nations' practice.

Regional structural adjustments in early Tertiary time resulted in the development of the Republic graben, a major down-dropped block that is from 6 to 10 miles in width and more than fifty miles in length. The graben became the center of extensive volcanic activity during Eocene and Oligocene time, resulting in a thick sequence of water-laid tuffaceous sediments, volcanic flows, and associated intrusives. A younger series of sediments, pyroclastics, and flows were deposited in structural depressions within the graben following the period of widespread volcanic activity. The Republic mining district is located along one of the major intragraben structural zones, where continuing subsidence during the period of volcanic activity resulted in an increased thickness of flows and associated flow breccias and pyroclastics. Intrusive masses in part healed early graben-forming faults, but later subsidence reopened old faults and created new fracture zones which later became the control for the gold-quartz veins. Considerable block adjustment along the subsidence area is evidenced by the structural pattern in the mines, and telescoped vein structures indicate north-south compressional stresses and east-west graben-forming tensional stresses prior to and during the emplacement of the veins. The veins, varying from a few feet to more than 50 feet in width, are filled primarily by fine-grained quartz, commonly chalcedonic or porcelain-like in appearance. Finely laminated dark-gray to black concentric banding within the veins generally distinguishes the better-grade ore zones, which contain finely disseminated sulfides and ore minerals that include principally electrum, stephanite, naumannite, and native silver.
