Gardner I?. Williams, authority on diamond mining, died at San Francisco, Cal., on Aug. 22, after an illness of nearly a year. Mr. Williams, who was in his eighty-first year, was born in Saginaw, Mich. He was graduated from the University of California in 1865, and afterward took a course at the Freiberg Mining Academy in Saxony. He was awarded the degree of LII. D. by the University of California in 1910, and Doctor of Engineering by the University of Michigan in 1917. THE Sol de Oro mine is in the province of Nazca, 487 km. southeast of Lima, and 60 km. inland from the coast at an elevation of 1200 m. above sea level. From Lima the mine may be reached in 8 hr. by automobile; 472 km. from Lima to Nazca over the paved Pan-American Highway and 15 km. from Nazca to the mine over a good graveled road. The trip from Lima can also be made in 2 hr. via the Faucett Air Lines which make two stops weekly at Nazca. The [Compania] Aurifera Nazca, owning and operating the Sol de Oro mine, was organized in Lima in 1930 by a group of prominent Peruvian mining men, including Ing. Carlos Alvarez Calderon, Dr. Alfredo Alvarez Calderón, Ing. Hector Boza, Ing. Jorge Félix Remy, Ing. Eulogio Femandini, Sr. Fernando Wiese, and Sr. Julio East. The nine claims in the Sol de Oro group owned by the company comprise an area of 52 square kilometers. Development of the property was not started until 1932 and only then under adverse conditions, owing to lack of transportation facilities. Mining machinery and other supplies could be taken as far as Ica by boat and railroad, but to transport them over the 180 km. of hot, sandy desert from Ica to the mine was a problem. There was no road in those days and only a few of the most venturesome truck drivers cared to contract the hauling. Another problem the company had to face was that of securing adequate labor. The Sol de Oro is in an agricultural region, and was forced to look to the near-by cotton plantations for men. Experienced men were imported from the "sierras," but they did not stay. The men are accustomed to high altitudes and cold climate and cannot easily acclimate themselves to the hot and arid coastal region. As a consequence the company has been forced to hire the inexperienced local laborers and train them for mining. The company has established three separate camps at the Sol de Oro property. Each is approximately one kilometer from the other and connected by auto road. The upper mine camp consists of living quarters for 300 workmen and their families, a general mine office, carpenter shop and timber-framing shed, compressor house, drill-sharpening and drill-repair shop, first-aid station, time office, school and store. At the central or "empleados" camp there is a 200-ton cyanide plant, general offices, warehouse, powerhouse, shops, laboratory, hospital, school, guest house, an 18-room hotel for the single staffmen, and 12 completely modern five-room cottages for the married staff employees. At the lower camp are living quarters for 200 workmen and their families, two general stores, a school and a small theater. Below this camp, along the river, are the company wells and pumping plant supplying water for mine, mill, and camp uses.

The solid solubility of iron in 2 to 10 pct cupro-nickels increases with temperature and nickel content. Property changes accompanying various heat treatments indicate typical precipitation hardening behavior. Iron content also affects softening temperature and sub-scale formation. These factors, as well as impingement corrosion resistance, influence the optimum iron content of commercial alloys. FOR many years Cu-Ni alloys have been used extensively in the form of tubes, pipes, and plates for the construction of salt-water lines and surface condensers on shipboard and in tidewater power stations. The 30 pct Ni alloy has been considered more resistant to rapidly flowing sea water than alloys of lower nickel content, and has been standard on ships of the U. S. Navy. Some ten years ago, the still better corrosion resistance obtained by modifying the 30 pct Ni alloy with approximately 0.5 pct Fe was recognized, and the iron-bearing alloy rapidly superseded the plain alloy as the standard material for severe service. In 1945, Tracy and Hungerford1 published a study of the effect of iron on the corrosion of various cupro-nickels in sea-salt solutions, and their data indicated that the 10 pct Ni alloy containing about 0.75 pct Fe was equivalent to the 30 pct Ni alloy containing 0.5 pct Fe. This was confirmed by LaQue in discussion of the above paper, and by results in an experimental condenser set up at the Kure Beach marine test station of The International Nickel Co., reported by Freeman and Tracy.' The 10 pct Ni iron-bearing alloy is now being very widely used in applications where the 30 pct Ni iron-bearing alloy was formerly considered standard. While this "substitution" has undoubtedly been stimulated by the present extreme shortage of nickel, it must be emphasized that it involves no loss of service performance, and would have occurred anyway in the course of time, for economic reasons. In view of the increasing use of the 10 pct alloy, it seems desirable to make generally available the results of several investigations of Cu-Ni-Fe alloys carried out in the Metallurgical Research Laboratory of The American Brass Co. in recent years. The present paper, deals with the constitution of these alloys in the copper-rich corner of the system, and with the variations in hardness and tensile properties resulting from the heat treatment of alloys containing various amounts of iron. Most of this work is concerned with alloys containing 10 pct Ni. With over about 0.75 pct fe, the 10 pct Ni alloy is suscep- Alloys Several series of cupro-nickel alloys containing iron were used in these investigations. Most of them were prepared in the laboratory, but two samples of commercially fabricated alloys were included. Series A—Nominally 2 and 5 pct Ni, each with 0 to 1.5 pct Fe. Series B—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 0.1 to 0.4 pct Fe. Series C—Nominally 1.0 pct Ni with 0 to 2 pct Fe. Series D—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 3 to 5 pct Fe. Series E—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 1 and 1.5 pct Fe.

IN designing a pocket instrument whereby any given horizontal or vertical angle may be closely approximated, the following points should be kept in view, if general utility is aimed at 1. The instrument should be light and compact, so that it can be carried in the pocket, or in a sling. 2. It should be capable of observing any angle whatever, horizontal or vertical. 3. Since time is often an important consideration in making a preliminary survey, it should be capable of giving the horizontal and vertical angle at one observation. I do not know of any instrument that will fulfill these requirements, except the one here described. Where the depression- or elevation-angle of the distant object, whose bearing is required, exceeds 50 or 60 degrees, it becomes difficult or impossible with a prismatic compass, for instance, to obtain accurate results; and since it frequently happens, particularly in mining, that much work requires to be done beyond that limit, it is obvious that an instrument which can be used to observe a high angle just as easily as a low one, if not absolutely a necessity, will at least be a great convenience. How this " pocket transit " attains to the required degree of universality will be understood from the diagram, Fig. 1, in which B is a beveled, graduated circle, attached to and freely revolving about the center of the magnet A. Light falling on B is reflected through a window in F (the compass-box), along the line AC, and is again reflected back to the eye at D by the prism C. WHEN Vice-chairman Calvert Townley calls the next meeting of the Executive Board of the American Engineering Council of the Federated American Engineering Societies to order in Washington on Sept. 30, it will be the first meeting in that city for almost a year. It is probable that the Board will decide at this meeting whether future board meetings will be held regularly at the headquarters in Washington or whether the plan of meeting at various engineering centers throughout the country, as has been done during the past year, will be followed. The most important business coming before this .meeting will be the election of a president to succeed Herbert Hoover, who resigned after he became Secre¬tary of Commerce. Nominations to fill this vacancy were ordered 'at the last meeting of the Executive Board, to be reported at the September meeting. Special attention will be given the plans for the engineering assembly, extension of employment service, question of licensing and registration of engineers. The engineering assembly, committee has been appointed, with A. P. Davis as chairman, the other members being Philip N. Moore, L. P. Alford, John C. Hoyt and F. A. Vaughn. This committee will work out detailed plans for an assembly to be held in con¬junction with the annual meeting of the American Engineering Council in, January. Tentative plans provide for a three-day session; one day to be given to special meetings of the executive boards of member organizations and committees of the American Engineering Council; one day to the sessions of the American Engineering Council; and at least one day to discussion of some, special topic.

MINING asbestos ore by caving at Thetford Mines, Quebec, has been described in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in papers presented by the staffs of The Asbestos Corp. Ltd., in 1934, and Johnson's Co. Ltd., in 1941. The production by caving prior to 1949, in round figures, has been 14,500,000 tons of ore by The Asbestos Corp. and 5,500,000 by Johnson's Co. They are the only caving operations in asbestos at the present time. The Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co. at Asbestos, 40 miles southwest of Thetford, is well along in preparations for caving, and The Bell Asbestos Mines Ltd. at Thetford Mines, will follow their examples later. Nearly all of the asbestos produced by the western hemisphere is mined in those districts of Canada. Since it has been the subject of a number of technical papers, this contribution is offered as a review of progress. Some introductory information seems appropriate, for few members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers are familiar with the mineral, or how asbestos deposits differ from others in caving characteristics. Asbestos is found in peridotite, a basic intrusive rock irregularly altered to serpentine and erratically fractured, well enough to cave in bulk, but leaving many blocks of solid ore of all sizes scattered through the deposit. Chrysotile is the variety of asbestos produced in Canada. Its fibers are the most valuable commercially, having a good proportion of long fibers, strong, silky, flexible, and suitable for spinning. The fibers occur in all lengths, from the microscopic to 3 in., or more, the shorter are more abundant. Their values depend on length combined with other qualities noted above. They occur as veinlets filling fissures in the peridotite, with crystals compactly arranged in parallel across the cracks. They are sometimes lightly frozen to the walls but the partings are distinct, often marked by particles of magnetite adhering to the fiber ends. Sometimes they break away from the rock in slabs an inch or more in thickness. In wide fissures the fibers are not always continuous, the "broken fibers" being separated by lines of parting with occasional scattered grains of magnetite, which is an injurious mineral to be elirninated when possible. In addition to the chrysotile ''Cross fiber," some "slip fiber" is found in fault fractures in limited quantities of less valuable character. With the exception of the Asbestos Corp, ore, in which the content is said to be more uniform, asbestos is eccentrically distributed through the peridotite. It is the general impression that the higher grades are more often found in hard rock. There are rich pockets and leaner areas which range down through various grades to minor barren sections. Wholesale mining is necessary to make sure of recovering all the high grade for there are no reliable indications of its existence. Ore selection only appears in constructing assay-grade limits for caving. The mill yield of the Thetford ore body in 1934 was 6 to 10 pct of the ore milled, made up of all classes, with occasional runs up to 15 pct or so. The strategic importance of the metallic minerals in our industrial economy, and the declining rates of discovery have focused attention on means of exploration for new mineral deposits. A consideration of exploration techniques leads to an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of geophysics as a tool for mining exploration. One means of evaluation will be to compare the use of geophysics in petroleum exploration with its possible uses in mining. Geophysics in Petroleum Exploration During the past twenty years, the petroleum industry has established an effective exploration technique. Geology is the basic tool in those areas where reliable predictions can be made from surface conditions. In the other areas, where the geological studies are inadequate, they must be supplemented with geophysics or direct exploration, such as drilling. Since geophysical work is far less costly than any form of direct explbration, it is used almost exclusively as the means for obtaining the desired subsurface information. The geological and geophysical techniques are credited with locating sites which yielded one producer for three dry holes during the year 1947.' For the wells located without geology or geophysics, there is a ratio of one producing well to sixteen dry holes. From these figures it is seen that the geological and geophysical techniques are more than four times as successful as the nontechnical exploration. It will be in order to consider further this ratio of one producer to three dry holes. The geophysical methods in use today† do not pretend to locate oil directly; their function is to locate anomalies or structures favorable for the accumulation of oil. For a producing oil well we must have not only structure, but also other favorable conditions, namely: petroliferous source beds, the required porosity and permeability in the reservoir rocks, an impermeable cap rock over the reser- voir, and the necessary water or gravity drive to force the oil into the bore hole. Since the geophysical work can only detect and sometimes delimit the anomaly, these other necessary conditions can be determined only by direct exploration. The success of modern geophysical work in locating and limiting the structure itself is remarkably high, probably over 95 pct accurate. Geophysical work renders an important service in the delineation of the structurally unfavorable areas and their elimination from the drilling phase of the exploration program. When attempting to locate any material of scarce occurrence in the earth, it is of paramount importance to know where not to dig. This elimination of barren areas is the least appreciated but is of great economic importance. For illustration, the difference between one producer to three dry holes, and one producer to sixteen dry holes, represents a saving of thirteen drilled wells, which would require an expenditure many times the cost of the geophysical work that might have revealed the nonfavorable structural conditions. THE problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, en¬gineers, and operators matter for serious consideration.. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, clue largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained in the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more severe and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-clay as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is .stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a :step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes.

The production of crude oil in the United States is exceeding consumption by one-quarter million barrels per day and, with the possibilities of West Texas, this condition of overproduction, unless controlled, is likely to continue for some time. The resulting low price of oil has caused the operator to observe closely his lease operating costs. The installation of more efficient and reliable machinery has followed and it can well be said that the art of producing oil is on the threshold of a new era. In this advancement electricity has played a leading part. This paper covers only the problem of electricity as applied to lease operation and does not consider other phases of the industry, such as drilling and pipe-line pumping, in which electric power has been utilized economically. In considering electrification of pumping wells, the first question the operator asks is whether or not his costs will be reduced and the second question is whether or not the production will be increased. The third question, although in effect it is closely allied to the first, is the cost of power. The last question can be answered only after a thorough analysis of operating conditions and a study of the power rates prevailing in the particular field under consideration. Within the past few years, the power companies have realized the desirability of a steady 24-hr, pumping load, have made their rates for oil-field service particularly attractive, and in general have shown splendid cooperation in assisting the oil companies in the satisfactory application of electric power to their leases. When everything is taken into consideration, the first cost is practically the same for electric drive as for gas engines when pumping on the beam with individual motors. This cost, at prevailing prices, should aver-age approximately $2200 to $2400 per installation when using 15 to 35-hp., two-speed pumping equipment, including motor and control, countershaft, motor house, belt, installation charges, and a prorated portion of the cost of transmission lines and transformers for serving a number of wells. Since there is practically no difference in the cost of the two installations, it is evident that electricity, to justify its consideration, must have a lower operating cost or produce more oil.

THE works of the Ore Knob Copper Company are situated in the county of Ashe in the northwestern part of the State of North Carolina, about ten miles from the Virginia line, at an elevation of 4600 feet above the sea. The nearest railroad station is at Marion, Smythe County, Virginia, about forty-five miles distant. The roads from the railroad to the works have been constructed by the company for the transportation of their material, and are very hilly, and in certain seasons of the year in bad repair. Transportation is therefore always limited and never easy, although it is done by contract at a very low price. The main difficulty with the transportation is not so much its cost as the fact that it puts a limit to the production of the works. These unfavorable conditions make it necessary for the owners of the mine to smelt their ores and to send to market nothing except the metal, which alone will bear the cost of transportation. An equation developed for gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 0.73 percent when applied to 264 natural gas and condensate systems including 2,043 PVT points. Another equation developed for liquid hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 1.12 percent when applied to 346 crude oil systems including 1,759 PVT points. Both equations require composition of the mixture to be expressed as mole fraction of methane through heptanes-plus, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, together with the characteristics of the heptanes-plus fraction in addition to the temperature and pressure. The equations cover wide ranges of the variables involved, and their accuracy is considerably better than that of other available methods. The equations were differentiated to allow calculation of the coefficients of isothermal compressibility and isobaric thermal expansion. (In this paper the coefficient of isothermal com-pressibility and the coefficient of isobaric thermal expansion will be expressed as compressibility and thermal expansion coefficient, respectively.) Equations to calculate these quantities are presented. INTRODUCTION Calculations of reservoir performance for petroleum reservoirs require accurate knowledge of the volumetric behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, both liquid and gaseous. Compressibilities are required in transient fluid flow problems, and thermal expansion coefficients are important in thermal methods of production. An accurate laboratory investigation of the PVT behavior of each reservoir fluid encountered would be costly and time consuming. For this reason various correlations for predicting fluid properties have been developed and recorded in recent literature. Correlations have been presented in the form of graphs, tables and equations. Since an increasing number of studies are being conducted with the aid of electronic computers, recent efforts have been directed toward development of correla-tions suitable for computer programming. Application of computers permits the use of more complex correlations which otherwise are not feasible. Moreover, methods for predicting reservoir performance, particularly those based on the compositional material balance, depend upon the capability of accurately expressing the molal volumes and other fluid properties as functions of pressure, temperature and composition. Observations of dislocation structure in niobium are presented using two techniques. Triangular pits developed by electroetching are confined to orientations in the stereographic triangle between the (111) pole and planes of the (1ll) zone and require the presence of carbon. Some unusual electroetching phenomena at other orientations are noted. A chemical etch of dislocations decorated by the addition of carbon to 50 ppm reveals the complete dislocation line structure in a surface layer up to 30 p deep, with a resolution of less than 1 p. This effect is independent of surface orientation. The structure of subboundary nets may be resolved for misorientations up to about 1'. Dislocation structures found in strain anneal grown crystals, such as helices, prismatic loops, and high-density areas, are observed. The measurement of dislocation density is discussed and values obtained in different ways are compared. IN the course of some work on the response of refractory metals to thermal-mechanical treatments, it was desired to examine the defect structure of relatively low dislocation density crystals of niobium in bulk form. Surface and bulk methods for the observation of dislocations have been reviewed by ~melinckx,' and include etch pitting, decoration, and various X-ray techniques. The dislocation line structure has been developed by decoration in a few metals, although observations were limited to certain orientations, or by the coarseness and nonselectivity of the precipitate. The most commonly used technique is etch pitting. In niobium, etch pits have been developed chemically'0," in material of high impurity content and electrolyti-cally'' in relatively pure material. In this paper, etch pits developed electrolytically, and the dislocation line structure of a surface layer developed by decoration and chemical etching, are examined, and observations are presented from both techniques. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Our starting material was electron-beam-melted niobium, swaged to 4 or -in.-diam rod. Chemical analysis is given in Table I. Single crystals were grown by a strain anneal technique using 1 to 2.5 pct of strain and growth temperatures of 1700" to 2300"~.'~ Some crystals grown by zone melting were also examined. The desired surface orientation was exposed either by spark machining or by sectioning with a cut-off wheel and prepared for etching by electro-polishing.

MODERN industry's incessant demands for increased operating efficiency and lower costs require that hazards attending all occupations be reduced to a minimum. Reduction of the inevitable losses that result from accidents and injury to the worker is one of the important economic problems confronting industry today and is the basis for the widespread safety movement. Dr. Charles E. Munroe, chief explosive chemist of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, is father of the statement, "The existence of a nuisance is evidence of an economic waste." This pointed expression of the internationally recognized scholar and explosives engineer has a direct relation to the prevention of accidents. Every injury and death in industry is a waste in human endeavor and a lessening of productive gain. Dr. Munroe has aptly paraphrased his previous summation with reference to wastes as follows: "A lost-time accident is evidence of an economic waste." That the economic waste entailed by occupational accidents is chargeable to industry is well substantiated by the fact that all but four states (Mississippi, South Carolina, Florida and Arkansas) now have workingmen's liability and compensation laws.

The San Manuel property is in town&ips 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern pinal county, and is about 31/25 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River And one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona, The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The old Hat district was prospected prior to the civil war, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the st. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage Or grade. It is estimated that not more than 50 tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the Sari Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried On drilling from November 1943 to February 1945 Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June 1944, and an option agreement was made with the Owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp, and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. THE little coal mine at Otsego, in the Winding Gulf field of southern West Virginia was dying. In the history of coal mining thousands of mines have been successful at first, but usually a change occurred and profits ceased. Often be change was so gradual and extended over such a length of time that the fundamental causes did not stand out in sharp relief and their significance was not realized. Studies often reveal that the cause for failure was in the arteries that connect the producing places with the mine entrance. Profits continued so long as the working places were close to the tipple and while the thrill of newness aid ease of access resulted in effective supervision from day to day. The air- way and haulageway, the wire line and manway, may have been sufficient when the distance from the entrance was a few hundred feet, but were inadequate when this was extended for thousands of feet.

Roof bolts are the primary means of supplemental support in coal mines and are widely used in other mines. Presently, post installation loads are measured infrequently on only about 10% of the bolts by using standard torque wrenches that limit accuracy to about ± 30%. Because mine roof bolts are long, slender, non-uniformly sized, roughly forged, placed in a difficult environment, and subject to severe bending on installation, researchers have been unable to use ultrasonic reflection techniques to measure strain. A complete measurement system has now been assembled by the US Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center. Obstacles such as bolt preparation, transducer mounting, reliable reflection, and calibration have been dealt with. The seemingly simple concept of measuring the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse to a reflector is actually complex due to the need to measure to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.) accuracy, the sensitivity of velocity to temperature, and stress, and the stability required to make measurements over several years.

THE following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A.
