THIS year's Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division is a relatively rare phenomenon in the metallurgical profession; he is an expert historian of metallurgy, he is a confirmed collector and student of old works on alchemy, chemistry, and metallurgy-vide: the famous Biringuccio and he is a profound student (with a somewhat idealistic slant) of recent trends in world affairs and in what some incurable optimists call civilization; and at the same time he is still possessed of a sense of humor. Incidentally he is also one of the bestknown nonferrous metallurgists in this country and abroad, and for fifteen years has been a willing worker in A.I.M.E and the Institute of Metals Division.

The year 1940 saw an increase of 20 per cent in oil production over the previous year—compared with a 16 per cent increase the previous year. In all, 25,790,380 bbl. were produced, an increase of 4,414,150 bbl, over 1939 and the largest production figure for south Arkansas since 1928. The older settled production continued to decline. Magnolia accounted for most of the increase, with aid from the other recent deep fields. During the year, 169 wells were drilled, 79 fewer than in the previous year. Of 131 wells drilled in proven fields, 18 were dry. Three of the 38 wildcats were pool openers. The drilling depth record was increased from 9028 to 9550 feet. Trend of Prospecting For the first time since 1936, the search for oil in the deep Smackover limestone slackened perceptibly; g dry wildcats ended in Smackover, 2 in. the underlying Eagle Mills; 7 penetrated Paleozoic beds, while 9 ended in Hosston, 2 in Glen Rose, 2 in Paluxy and 4 in Gulf. Geology The wells listed in Table 2 either resulted in the discovery of new oil pools or, because of their depth or location, afforded impor-tant stratigraphic or structural informa-tion. Fig. I is a general columnar and stratigraphic section showing the relation-ship of the strata within the Comanche series. The nomenclature shown was ac-cepted by the Shreveport Geological Society. It was subsequently published by Imlay,l who indicated probable correlations with other areas and presented evidence for the possible Jurassic age of the under-lying Cotton Valley and Smackover formations. New Fields Pouke.—On June 10, 1940, the Louark Producing Co. completed its No. I Sturgis, sec. I, T. 17 S., R. 27 W., in central Miller County, producing between 3583 and 3607 ft. in the upper part of the Paluxy forma-tion. The well flowed I00 bbl. of 3r.4' gravity oil per day through Ns-in. tubing choke. This discovery resulted from seismograph work. Six other wells were drilled in the area, none of which found production in the original sand. One of these wells is producing from a sand 50 ft. deeper in the section. The others were abandoned. No further development is in prospect. Production is from lenticular sands of the upper Paluxy; 45,556 bbl. had been pro-duced by the end of 1940. There is structural closure against a fault to the northwest. McKanzie.—The Atlantic Refining Com-pany's No. I Bodcaw Lumber Co., sec. 29, T. 17 S., R. 23 W., eastern central La-fayette County, was completed June 8, 1940, as the eighth and farthest west of the Smackover (Reynolds o6lite) limestone pools. The well flowed 10 bbl. an hour of 58.6' gravity distillate through an 1 1/64 Ma-in. tubing choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 8400:I.

The irradiation-induced densification of pyrolytic carbon has been shown to take place by a simple first-order rate process. The values of the densification constant, kd, for isotropic carbons are 1.0 x 10-22, 1.4 X 10-22 and 2.8 X 10-22 (nut)-1 at irradiation temperatures of 520o, 670°, and 1000oC, respectively. The apparent activation energy obtained from the temperature dependence of kd for isotropic carbons is about 0.2 ev. Estimates of the maximum stresses that develop in isotropic carbons owing to shrinkage onto an unyielding support show that stresses in excess of 15,000 psi may be avoided during irradiatian at 600" and 1000°C if the initial coating density is kept above 1.5 and 1.9 g per cu cw, respectively. If a carbon coating on an unyielding support is not completely isotropic, stresses may continue to build up at high neutron exposures after densification is complete because of continued anisotropic distortion. Stresses in excess of 15,000 psi from this source may be avoided during irradiation at 1000°C if' the Bacon anisotropy factor is kept below 1.3. A variety of applications of carbon and graphite in nuclear technology has stimulated numerous studies of the effect of neutron irradiation on these materials One of the most interesting problems associated with the use of carbons and graphites in the high fast neutron fluxes of nuclear reactors arises as a consequence of the neutron-induced dimensional changes that occur during irradiation. Energetic neutrons displace car- bon atoms from their lattice positions; and, depending on the temperature, the interstitials and vacancies produced migrate to form clusters, recombine, or are annihilated at dislocations or crystallite boundaries. The competition of various sinks for the point defects results in structure-sensitive bulk-dimensional changes that vary with temperature in a complicated way. This paper deals with the neutron-induced dimensional changes in turbostratic carbons that are being used as coatings on nuclear fuel particles. Details of the structure of these carbons and the variations of their structure with deposition conditions have been reported.'-3 It has been shown in previous work that the neutron-

The grain boundary adsorption of solutes as a function of bulk concentration and solution temperature was studied using internal-frictimz techniques. From the variation of the cor-responding energy of activation for the Phenomenon, the inter-actior2 energy between a solute atom and a high-angle boundary was calculated. Interaction energies in the range of 0.3 ev were obtained, and were used to obtain the actual concentration of solute at the grain boundary. In corroboralory creel, studies the direct grain boundary contribution to the total creep strain was measured. It was found that the interface creep varied with the type and magnitude of the solute adsorbed. Subscribing to the theory of their being energetically favorable sites at the grain boundary for solutes of both Positive and negative size deviations, ternaries were investigated in Which solutes of both types were present. A marked increase in the resistance to grain boundary creep was manifested. THE major difficulty which has been encountered in investigations of the grain boundary segregation of solutes has been the lack of a sufficiently sensitive method of measuring the amount of adsorbed solute at the boundary. For the general case of a high-angle boundary, no direct method of measuring the adsorption at the boundary has been found to date. Internal friction has been used in several studies of grain boundary adsorption1-3 and although it is somewhat indirect, it was demonstrated to have the necessary sensitivity. In this investigation the authors have used internal-friction techniques in conjunction with a study of the grain boundary contribution to the total creep strain. As both parts of the investigation were performed on the same specimens it was possible to combine a highly sensitive technique with a somewhat more direct method in order to obtain information about the adsorption phenomenon. From internal-friction studies the rate of increase of the activation energy was observed to be a function of the difference in size between the solute and solvent atoms. It was proposed that if Gibbs' adsorption isotherm is considered, i.e., where r is the excess solute at the boundary, c is the bulk concentration, and ay/ac is the change in grain boundary energy with bulk concentration, then AH b/ac must vary in the same way as ay/ac and therefore In this way a relative measure of the grain boundary adsorption of solutes is directly obtainable from in-ternal-friction studies. If the previous work in the field of grain boundary adsorption of solutes is examined, certain apparent information is desirable if the phenomenon is to be understood. The most important questions that must be asked are as follows: 1) Is the adsorption of solutes at the grain boundary an equilibrium process? 2) Can the Mott model of the grain boundary be used as a basis of setting up an elastic interaction between the grain boundary and solute atoms? 3) Is it possible to obtain an exact measure of the excess solute at the grain boundary as a function of temperature and bulk concentration rather than merely a relative measure of the adsorption 4) Are the conclusions obtained from an indirect method such as internal-friction studies meaningful in considering gross grain boundary effects such as creep? TIE fundamental principle of resistance thermometry lies in the determination of temperatures by the measurement of an electrical conductor subjected to various temperatures and the translation of the resultant changes, in ohms, into temperature equivalents. Such resistance measurements can be made with maximum precision by the use of a standard Wheatstone bridge and a reflecting galvanometer of high sensitivity. Under such conditions, results are obtainable that may be accurate within 0.1 or even 0.01 per cent., and the "idiosyncrasies" of heated electrical conductors can be studied with advantage and profit, even if the latter is not of a financial nature. The chief requisites for producing a serviceable -commercial instrument may be enumerated as follows: First, there must be a resistor or "bulb" that can stand the maximum temperature without deterioration and which has a pronounced temperature coefficient. Second, there should be constructed an "even" bridge, having two fixed arms of equal values, in ohms. Third, a rheostat, the maximum resistance of which will be equal to the total change in the resistance of the bulb, between temperature extremes, is required. Fourth, there must be a sensitive galvanometer which is aperiodic, or nearly so. Finally, there should be a fairly steady source of direct current. The general scheme of this type of apparatus, in its simplest form, can be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. Resistors A and B are constructed of manganin, therlo, or some other resistance wire having a negligible temperature coefficient. The sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer G has its zero in the center. R is a rheostat and X is a resistor or bulb made of insulated platinum wire, or else of nickel, copper, or some alloy, according to requirements. K is a battery, but a direct-current service line is often used instead, with sufficient ballast in series to properly reduce the current.

Mr. A. Bement, Chicago, Ill. (communication to the Secretary*) :—Mr. Campbell, in proposing his method of sampling coal-seams, has rendered an important service in insisting on the presentation of an adequate history of the sample; and it is to be hoped that his suggestion will meet with further recommendation. In my opinion it is fully as important that a complete description of the sample and the conditions surrounding its taking be given, as the results of the analysis itself; and if such should become standard practice, coal-analysis would assume greater value. As it is, the published data are very confusing, and only to an extremely small extent are they really useful. The method suggested by Mr. Campbell, however, cannot have a general application; for example, in the Eastern Interior coal-basin, particularly at the present time, the output consists largely in grades other than mine-run, which in Illinois, for the year 1905, was only about 24 per cent. of the total product; and inasmuch as Mr. Campbell's method of sampling cannot give values for any other grade than mine-run, my contention that, at best, it can have but a limited application, is apparent. To illustrate the argument, there are two coal-seams, with the characteristics of which I am particularly familiar; each seam, as it lies in the ground, contains almost exactly 10 per cent. of ash; the lump coal from one of these seams ranges from 10 to 11 per cent. of ash, but from the other seam it does not average more than 6 per cent., although, as before mentioned, the average percentage of ash in the full seam is the same for each case. A careful and proper sampling of coal-seams, to be followed by analyeis, is to be commended in connection with all investigation; in fact, it should precede any careful study. Service failures in brass condenser tubes are often due to corrosion. One of the commonest types of corrosion reveals a surface structure of redeposited copper.' The study of the effect of alloy addition agents in preventing this kind of corrosion has received impetus from the extensive publication of Bengough and May.2 The mechanism of such inhibition gauged from immersion corrosion,2 cell corrosion,3 and electrolytic potential4 measurements is controversial. This controversy may be attributed in part to a lack of definite knowledge5 of the actual nature of the initial films formed in corrosion experiments. In our own corrosion work on copper and 70-30 brass this lack became apparent and necessitated an examination of surface films by X-ray and electron diffraction methods. The present paper is but an introduction to the subject of inhibition and reports the structure of films formed in active corrodents. Experimental Procedure The arsenical coppers and brasses used in this investigation were made by one of the writers* in the plant of the Revere Copper and Brass Co. at Rome, N. Y. Standard commercial melting practice was followed. O.F.H.C. copper and electrolytic zinc were used and all arsenic additions were made by additions of a master copper alloy. The final analyses are given in Table I. Likewise, the extrusion, cold-rolling, and intermediate anneals employed followed standard usage. Final heat-treatments were given to all materials to produce a similar grain size (0.035 to 0.045 mm. for brass and 0.015 to 0.025 for copper) for the alloys containing various percentages of arsenic. Samples 1/2 by M by 1/4 in. were cut from sheet material resurfaced and finished with 0000 metal-lographic papers. The surfaces were all degreased in alcohol and benzine before immersion. After immersion in the corrodent, they were washed gently in tap water, dipped first in alcohol and then in pure benzine and allowed to dry in the diffraction apparatus. It is interesting to note that during the period that has elapsed since the Institute's formation, wood charcoal, anthracite and bituminous coal, as well as beehive and by-product coke, have been used as blast-furnace fuels, that the reign of supremacy of each fuel was associated with specific periods, and that each successive era was marked by a production of pig iron greater in quantity than the one it followed (Fig 1). The transition of the manufacture of blast-furnace iron from charcoal to anthracite and then to beehive coke, and ultimately to by-product coke, is a reflection of the economic limitations of each fuel coupled with availability sufficient to meet the increased demands of each succeeding decade. It is a pattern that has been followed almost without exception in the history of pig iron in every country. CHARCOAL Colonial production of iron relied exclusively on wood char- coal as a fuel, and the iron industry of this count recognizes the important role played by this fuel. Charcoal iron has been available to consumers since the beginning of the organized iron industry in America in 1645, by John Winthrop at Saugus, Mass.,1 and although its greatest use antedates the formation of the Institute, it is still used to some extent. Until about 1840 nearly all of the pig iron manufactured in the United States was made with charcoal, and it continued as a principal smelting fuel until 1855.2 After that time, more pig iron was produced with other fuels, despite the fact that

Introduction In the mining industry, comminution typically begins in the mine with a blast of explosive to break rock so that it can be handled by the avail- able equipment. Though the breaking of the rock is essential for material handling in the mine and plant, this is not the only reason for ore reduction in the mineral industry. Comminution is primarily required to liberate minerals from ore so that they can be concentrated into valuable products or to prepare minerals, such as talc, for market as mined. The size of the equipment used for comminution ranges from small to massive. Regardless of equipment size, the power required to reduce the rock is a major expense. Years ago, mineral deposits could be mined more selectively and required less grinding to produce saleable products. However, as richer deposits were depleted, it has become necessary to mine low-grade deposits, with the valuables dispersed throughout the rock. Comminution equipment evolved in physical size and capacities to meet the new mine and process requirements. A modern, modestly sized mining operation, with a capacity of 25.000 TPD may use crushers two stories high weighing over a million pounds, SAG mills 36 feet in diameter driven by dual motors putting out 10.000 horse- power, and ball mills over 16 feet in diameter . Because of the increasing size and weight of modern equipment, the builder is faced with the problems of erecting massive foundations and field assembling equipment on these foundations. As equipment costs and plant construction costs increase, builders are finding that owners are asking for more detailed progress and cost data. Comminution construction projects are generally classified as grass roots plants or expansions or modifications to existing plants. It is estimated that 60-702 of the jobs involve existing plants. Today ' s costs for construction of small, new comminution plants can reach tens of millions of dollars; larger plants can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. INTRODUCTION MANY different shapes of drill bits are in use with hammer drills, but little definite information is available whereby to judge which one of these shapes is the best. The following investigation was undertaken in order to determine what effect, if any, the shape of the cutting edge has on the cutting speed and wearing qualities of drill bits. The bits tested were those in common use, namely, the 4-point or cross bit, the 6-point bit, the Z bit and the "Carr" bit. The rock in which the tests were made was the red granite from southeast Missouri. It is a coarse crystalline granite containing an unusually large amount of quartz and is extremely hard, and on account of its uniform texture is admirably adapted to this work. While tests in other rocks might show somewhat different results, nevertheless it is the opinion of the authors that the relative cutting quality inherent in the shape of the bits would be the same in all rocks. Other qualities, such as mudding freely, freedom from fitchering, etc., might make one bit more desirable than another in softer rocks. DESCRIPTION OF BITS TESTED The 4-point bits were the usual shaped bits commonly made on the Leyner sharpener with 14° taper on the wings and a 90° angle between cutting edges. Some tests were run at 85 lb. pressure with a 4-point bit made with a 5° taper on the wings. This was made by using the Carr bit die. The 6-point bits were the usual shaped hits made on, the Leyner sharpener. The Carr bits were made with a 5° taper and an angle of 100° between cutting edges.

R. A. Schmucker, Jr.—The writer wishes to point out that an acicular growth of austenite, similar to that described in the author's paper, was recently observed in an alloy steel of only 0.06 C content. This steel, which represents an 0.07 max C, 1.35 Cr, 0.55 Ni, 0.20 Mo analysis, combines the characteristics of minimum hardness in the annealed condition with maximum hardenability and is therefore suited primarily for cold-hobbing applications. The acicular austenite formation in this steel was observed accidentally during a determination of its Ac1 temperature. The samples used in this investigation represented as-forged bar stock which had been given a preliminary temper at 1300°F. The critical (Ac1) temperature was finally established at 1400 °F. Fig. 15 represents the microstructure of the sample which had been heated at 1450°F for ½ hr, water quenched, and tempered at 600°F for ½ hr (for the purpose of darkening the martensite). It will be observed from the distribution of the darkened areas of martensite that the parent austenite grains formed at 1450°F had grown in an acicular manner and still occupied only a small percentage of the total area. The remainder of the area contains the original equiaxed ferrite grains in which new austenite had as yet scarcely formed. However, the tiny isolated martensitic patches at several points where three or more ferrite grains intersect indicate that small austenite grains had formed and started to grow in an apparently equiaxed fashion. Fig. 16 represents the prior microstructure of an original sample in the as-forged and tempered condition, before it was heated -above the critical temperature. It is probable that there are two kinds of ferrite in this structure: (1) The equiaxed proeutectoid ferrite grains which separated from the austenite when the steel was cooled from the forging temperature, and (2) the acicular ferrite associated with the aggregate of fine carbide which is represented by the patches of

The specific conductance of FeOx,-CaO melts in contact with iron was found to decrease from 200 ohm-1 cm-1 for FeO, to 40 ohm-1 cm-1 for a melt containing 26.3 pct CaO at 1400°C. The temperature coefficient was positive at all compositions, but became smaller at high CaO contents. Current efficiencies for electrolysis increased from 2.5 pct in FeOx to 17.3 pct at the high CaO composition, indicating a change from predominantly electronic conduction to conduction with a substantial ionic contribution. It was shown that Ca++ ions as well as Fe++ ions carry the ionic current. A subsidiary investigation on the apparent effect of atmospheres of argon, helium, and nitrogen on the electrical conductivity showed that this could be correlated with surface temperature losses, which varied with the thermal conductivities of the gases and resulted in precipitation of metal by the reaction 3 Fe++ = 2 Fe+++ + Fe. The work described in this paper is offered as a contribution to the general fund of knowledge concerning metallurgical slags. Measurement of electrical conductivity and electrolysis are comparatively trouble -free methods for investigating molten materials, but, although these methods had been used for complex slags, it was not until the work of Bockris et al.1 that the approach of examining simple binary slag systems was employed, and CaO-SiO2, MnO-SiO2, and Al2O3-Si9 were studied. Two groups have performed work of particular relevance to the present investigation. Inouye, Tomlinson, and chipman2 studied the conductivity of wustite as a function of temperature and of the addition of 5 mol pct of a number of oxides, including CaO. They concluded that molten FeOx in equilibrium with iron is a semiconductor. Simnad, Derge, and ceorge3 demonstrated the ionic nature of liquid iron silicate slags and also concluded that, although the conductivity of FeOx in equilibrium with iron is predominantly electronic in nature, there is a small ionic contribution. The work reported here on FeOx,-CaO slags consists of three main parts, namely, the determination of the specific conductance over a wide composition range, an investigation into the nature of the conductivity through current-efficiency measurements over the same composition range, and an attempt to identify the current-carrying ions, as well as a subsidiary investigation on the apparent effect of the nature of the inert atmosphere on the conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The slags, varying in composition from FeOx to 27 pct CaO, were prepared by heating reagent- grade Fe2O3 in an ingot iron crucible with a suitable amount of CaCO3 and, in some cases, powdered iron, in air. This prefused material was then used for the runs. At the end of each run the cell was removed from the furnace and quenched by immersing the bottom half in water. After crushing, the slags were analyzed for calcium and total iron by the usual wet methods. The oxygen content was obtained by difference. Specific Conductance: Apparatus and Method. Fig. shows the experimental setup, with the conductivity cell and leads of ingot iron. The standard four-probe method for measuring high conductivities was used. In this, the potential drop across the unknown resistance is compared with the potential drop across a known resistance connected in series, i .e., same current through both resistances. Thus there are both current and potential leads to the center electrode and to the crucible, which acts as th other electrode. Both ac and dc circuits were available for the measurements; they have been described in earlier work performed in this laboratory.4,5 The geometry of the cell was such that the center electrode was equidistant from the bottom and sides of the crucible. This ensured that the current path was the same irrespective of the magnitude of the conductivity of the material in the cell. Cell constant were measured with KC1 or NaCl solutions, which have considerably lower conductivities (0.0013 to 0.25 ohm-' cm) than the slags, and this precaution in design made sure that the determined cell constants applied to the cells with contents of any conductivity. The cell-constant determinations were made with the ac measuring circuit to prevent polarization. The four-probe method eliminates lead resistance but not the resistance of those parts of the center

Following the suggestion of Engineering Council and at the direction of, the President, representatives from each of the Federal Government bureaus interested in map-making were called into a conference for the purpose of coordinating all of the Government's map-making activities. This conference has now reported back to the President the results of its findings, which indicate that Engineering Council's recommendation in this matter was well founded. While the conference report states that its members were of the opinion that little duplication of effort existed, it recommends the formation of a permanent Board of Surveys and Maps. An extended review of the map-making activities, which is given as an appendix to the report, indicates that this recommendation is a logical step. The conference recommendations concerning this Board of Surveys and Maps are as follows: (1) the Board is to he com-posed of representatives of mapping bureaus to be assisted by outside engineering organizations, which have been named above; (2) the estab-lishment of an information office in one of the Government bureaus, preferably the Geological Survey, which is to be under the supervision of the Board and is to be a mapping information clearing house for the Government and outside engineering organizations; (3) copyright laws are to be so changed that copies of all. maps made in the United States and with Governmental authority, will go to the central information office; (4) the Government departments are to receive orders to cooperate, with the Board; (5) future topographic maps of all kinds are to conform with specifications for the standard topographic map; (6) the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey to have supervision of final adjustment of all important control data under specifications approved by Board of Surveys and Maps; (7) surveys in the form of maps and publications are to be issued as soon as possible after field work has been completed; (8) program of the Interdepartmental Committee on Aerial Surveying was approved. Outside technical and scientific organizations that are called in for consultation are to operate in an advisory capacity only, responsibility for action on Governmental work is. to rest solely with the Governmental agencies.

CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device. When the management decided to start open- pit operations in 1945 the ruggedness of the terrain was one factor that led to the purchase of the small 22-T model drill. The orebody lies on both sides of Copper Creek Canyon. The sides of the canyon are steep and are cut by numerous narrow branch gullies. The drill had to travel over roads that were narrow and steep. It proved adequate for drilling the capping formation and is still in use.
