TONIGHT I want to speak of the current problems and the postwar difficulties facing American industry. American industry has done an outstanding job in adjusting its operations to wartime necessity. The national income for 1942 was nearly $120,000,090,000 and of this outlay approximately $55,000,000,000 went for war material. The enormity of the expenditures for war material is indicated by the fact that the expenditures for war purposes alone were greater than the annual gross national income in the period 1931-34. This tremendous production job in turning out a record output of war products was accomplished by industry in spite of a large number of restraining and hampering influences, and I want to mention several of the more important problems.

CHAIRMAN DOUGHTON of the House Ways and Means Committee announced on September 23 that the committee has scheduled public hearings on an excess-profits tax, beginning on November 15, 1950. In the meantime, the staff of the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation and the staff of the Treasury Department are to confer jointly on this question in the hope that such conferences may result in the preparation of a report on excess-profits tax proposals which could be used as a basis for testimony before the committee. It is thought that this procedure may aid in the draft of an excess-profits tax bill for introduction in the House when Congress reconvenes on November 27.

T HE Tonopah Extension assay office is a two- story, concrete structure on a solid foundation of andesite, situated about 100 yd. from the company's mill, so that it will not be affected by the stamps or the tube-mills; also it will not be affected by under- ground blasting. On the second floor are the mine superintendent's office and drafting and blueprint rooms. On the ground floor are the assayer's office,' mixing room, furnace room, crusher room, chemical laboratory, parting room, store room, and change and shower room for the mine superintendent, assayers, and engineers. The crusher room is outside of the main building, and has four concrete walls, thus eliminating the jar of the crusher; it is so situated that the least possible amount of dust spreads through the main building. An 8 by 10-in. jaw crusher, which crushes to ¼ in., was made by a local foundry. Attached to the top is a small galvanized-iron hopper covered with a ¼ in. screen, on to which the sample is dumped. The fines-pass through the screen into the hopper, while the oversize is dumped into the crusher. The crushed sample and fines from the screen drop down to a set .of splits suspended from an iron rod below the crusher jaws. The small sample is caught below in a small pulp pan. The rejects drop from the splits through a 2-in. pipe on to a bucket conveyor, which dumps into a galvanized-iron hopper in an upper corner of the room. The rejects drop through a 2-in. pipe to a reject bin outside the build- ing. This bin is constructed high enough for a truck to be loaded from it by means of a chute door on the side.

GROUND movement and subsidence is an important matter from several points of view and it is regrettable that more papers have not been written on this subject in the past year. Damage may be done to surface buildings or to the higher workings of a mine, and a study of the subject gives valuable in- formation on hanging-wall or roof control. The latter objective is strikingly shown in a recent paper presented by Jack Spaulding on Oct. 21, 1937, before the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, of Great Britain, entitled "Theory and Practice of Ground Control in the Kolar Gold Field, India." All may not agree with some of his theories that were deduced from studies of the many violent rock bursts at depths of 5000 to 7000 ft., but the data obtained are of great value. His theories of symmetrical ring stresses and symmetrical domes which are pictured as perfect are rather hard to understand as such uniformity is un- likely in view of the irregularities in the formation due to folds and fractures of various kinds. All will agree in principle with this idea of domal effects, which have been observed in many countries, but they are generally irregular.

(communication to the Secretary): In Mr. Irving's able and interesting paper he describes minutely the appearance of the wolframite and its association with the refractory siliceous gold-ore. He also describes this gold-ore, but fails to mention the important pockets of metallic gold found in the Lead City occurrence of it. I use the term " metallic " in preference to the more usual " free," for it has been found that this gold is not easily amalgamated. Metallic gold is comparatively rare in the refractory siliceous gold-ores of the Black Hills; hence its occurrence in considerable amounts in the Lead City wolframite district deserves notice. I possess a beautiful specimen from the Harrison mine. It is a lump of drusy, granular ore, about 6 in. in diameter. The gold .is " shot" through it in large and small pin-heads; and in two specially oxidized areas, each about 11/2 in. in diameter, it is peppered full. The famous " Grantz strike," made in the Lead City wolframite locality, produced many beautiful gold specimens. This district affords an excellent example of the repeated discovery of new mineral values upon old ground. By reason of its proximity to the Homestake vein, this wolframite deposit was inevitably traversed many times by experienced geologists, mineralogists and mining engineers, who evidently must have thrown aside, with no thought of wolframite, the lumps of " black iron " lying about. I have the admission of an able geologist that, six months before the wolframite was discovered, he visited some of the very mines where it occurred, and passed it by as magnetic iron-ore. At the time of the discovery, the mineral was scattered over the gold-mine dumps in no small quantities, having been culled as worthless out of the gold-ore. It remained for

The demand for natural gas continues to increase at higher than anticipated rates, partly because of its widening price advantage over most other fossil fuels when the cost of air-pollution control is included. However, there are clear indications that the natural gas supply from the conliguous 48 states and continental shelves will not keep up with this rapid growth in demand indefinitely. Projections are presented which define the extent of potential deficiencies from the 1970's to the year 2000. Among the sources of supplemental gas - imported pipeline natural gas from Canada and Mexico, tanker import of liquefied natural gas, and synthetic pipeline gas from coal and oil shale -by far the most abundant at potentially competitive costs is pipeline gas from coal. The state of development and relative economics of the various coal gasification processes are reviewed. It is shown that synthetic pipeline gas could become a very substantial market for bituminous coal and lignite at current mine-mouth prices - 60-70 million tons of coal for each trillion cubic feet of synthetic pipeline gas produced. This corresponds to only slightly more than the current annual increase in gas demand. Although annual discoveries (gross additions to proved reserves) of natural gas in the United States are still on a general upward trend from the current level of 22 trillion cu ft annually, most forecasters do not expect this to increase substantially in the foreseeable future. For example, the updated (to include 1966 and 1967 data) mathematical model of natural gas discovery and production in the U.S. developed by the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT)' projects that discoveries will level out at about 25 trillion cu ft annually in the late 1970's and during the 1980's and then decline to about 21 trillion cu ft by the year 2000 (Fig. 1). This adds up to a new supply for the period 1968-2000 of about 790 trillion cu ft. Experts who usually reflect the producers' viewpoint, such as Radford L. Schantz of Foster Associates,* are relatively more pessimistic. In contrast, a forecast just made by the U.S. Dept. of the Interior is much more optimistic.3 It assumes an increase in gas discoveries of 2.2% per year over the period 1965-80, reaching about 30 trillion cu ft in 1980. If this rate of increase were extended to the year 2000, annual discoveries would reach 46 trillion cu ft at that time, for a total over the period 1968-2000 of about 1100 trillion cu ft. To these forecasts of new gas discoveries must be added proved reserves of roughly 290 trillion cu ft,4 bringing total U.S. supplies for the rest of the century to nearly 1100 trillion cu ft (IGT) and possibly as high as 1400 trillion cu ft (U.S. Dept. of the Interior). This is approximately the same range as that of two estimates of total remaining recoverable natural gas supply: Potential Gas Committee, 980 trillion cu ft5 and IGT, 1450 trillion cu ft.6 Only the 1965 estimate by the U.S. Geological Survey7 suggests that economically recoverable natural gas supplies will not be exhausted around the end of the century. These forecasts are, naturally, based on the assumption that changes in technological, economic, and regulatory environment as they affect the gas industry will be of an evolutionary, not revolutionary, nature. The various forecasts of potential natural gas supply must now be compared to forecasts of natural gas demand (Table I). The general consensus is that the recent Future Requirements Committee projection to 1990' (extended to the year 2000 by the most recent U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) projection9) represents the minimum gas requirements (Table 11). They add up to a total of 1030 trillion cu ft for the period 1968-2000. Even this minimum anticipated gas demand exceeds the total remaining supply estimate by the Potential Gas Committee and would nearly exhaust the proved reserves plus new discoveries projected by IGT. The supply situation would appear much tighter if the demand projections of the Texas Eastern Transmission Gorp.10 and the American Gas Assn.(A.GA.)'' were used (Table I). Yet, these higher forecasts probably do not include the effects of such new markets as gas fuel cells, use of liquefied natural gas as a transport fuel, etc. They also may not fully reflect the impact of air quality control on the fuel market. Obviously, the probable discrepancy between projected supply and demand can only be accommodated in four ways. 1) Rapid increase in exploration and drilling activity to provide new supplies in the amount projected by the optimistic U.S. Dept. of the Interior forecast, coupled with an increase in net pipeline imports from Canada and Mexico from the present 0.5 trillion cu ft per year

The practical use to which topographical models or relief-maps have been put, has within the last few years taken a wider range. They are rapidly coming into favor for other than purely scientific purposes, and their value for illustration and instruction is being more fully appreciated. Topographical maps; representing by contour-curve lines the elevations and depressions of the earth's surface, are now demanded in engineering work of nearly every description, and afford a ready means of bringing out the configuration of the country in a simple manner. A beautiful example of recent topographical mapping is seen in the seventeen sheets just issued by the Geological Survey of New Jersey. By reason of the inability of unskilled persons to understand the nature of a topographical map, it is sometimes necessary to con struct the same in relief, with the rivers, canals, railroads, etc., delin eated upon it. With the aid of such a map, problems in engineer ing science which would otherwise require expert assistance to explain them, are reduced to a simple and understandable form. Relief-maps are also of value to the geologist in working out the geological structure. To the instructor they present the most ready and efficient means of imparting clear and accurate knowledge of topography and kindred subjects. To the lawyer they are invalua ble in enabling him to bring into the court-room a representation of a part of the country with all its features accurately shown, to ex plain to the court and jury the special points about which litigation is pending and which would otherwise require long and laborious description. The application of the topographical map to business purposes is shown in a relief constructed by the writers for the Cumberland Valley Railroad Company and used by that company in the various ways of calling attention to the desirability of its route. THE production of soft coal from strip mines in the United States has shown a remarkable growth in the last sixteen years, increasing from one and one-quarter million tons in 1914 to approximately twenty-two million tons in 1929. This is a growth of approximately 1660 p& cent, as compared with a growth of approximately 20 per cent in the underground mines for the same period. But even with this marked in- crease the total tonnage produced by open-face mining represents only 4 per cent of the nation's soft coal tonnage.

Iron ore mining in the Adirondack region of northern New York dates back to the Revolutionary War. It is recorded that Benedict Arnold in his campaigns in the Lake Champlain area during the American Revolution utilized the local ores to produce armament and cannon balls. Through the efforts of early pioneers, the iron mining industry in northern New York gained impetus so that in the 1880's mines in the area accounted for nearly one fourth of the iron ore produced in the United States. Both magnetite and red hematite ores were mined during this period. With the discovery of the Lake Superior ores, the iron ore industry in New York started to decline and remained relatively unimportant until 1938. Modern day methods of mining and beneficiating sufficiently high tonnages of low-grade ores to justify the large expenditures for plant and equipment prompted a resurgence in northern New York mining. During the past several years, the production of iron ore from the Adirondack magnetites has greatly increased, and production which amounted to .6%, of the United States total during the 1918-1928 period (Mining and Metallurgy, November 1943) has been increased to 2.85% of the total in 1948. The vapor pressure of palladium over a series of Rlz-Pd alloys has been measured by the torsion-effusion method. The thermodynamic properties of the alloy system at 1575=K have been calculated from the vapor pressure data. The activities and the free energies of formation exhibit large positive deviations from ideal behavior. The enthalpies of formation are endother-mic. The entropies of formation are positive and larger than the ideal entropy of mixing. All of the thermodynamic properties suggest that a strong tendency toward phase separation exists in the solid solutions. The possible origin of the phase instability and the various factors that influence the thermodynamic properties are discussed. RECENT studies of the thermodynamic properties of alloys of palladium with nontransition elements have indicated that a significant contribution to the enthalpy of formation is related to the redistribution of the conduction electrons upon alloy formation.'-' The present work was undertaken to ascertain the importance of this contribution in Pd/transition-metal alloys. The Rh-Pd system was chosen for this investigation for several reasons: 1) The thermodynamics of the system were unknown. 2) Rhodium and palladium are completely soluble at high temperatures; below 1118OK the solid solution becomes immiscible.', 3) The difference in magnitude between the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium permitted the use of an existing effusion apparatus. 4) Additional information was known about the alloy system that would facilitate the interpretation of the thermodynamic results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermodynamic properties of the Rh-Pd alloy system were calculated from the vapor pressure of palladium over solid palladium and over several solid Rh-Pd alloys. The vapor pressure was measured by means of the torsion-effusion apparatus that has been described previously. In this method, an effusion cell is suspended from a tungsten filament inside a high-temperature furnace. Two orifices are located eccentrically such that the effusion of the vapor creates a rotational torque in the filament. The angle of rotation is directly related to the total vapor pressure within the cell. As the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium are approximately five orders of magnitude apart," the total vapor pressure was considered to be effectively equal to the equilibrium vapor pressure of palladium. The effusion cells were made from high-purity alumina since auxiliary experiments indicated that essentially no reaction occurs between alumina and solid Rh-Pd alloys. Unfortunately, because the orifices were irregular, an accurate calculation of the Free- man-Searcy correction factors" could not be made. The constants were determined in an independent experiment where the vapor pressure of copper, as measured in the alumina cell, was compared with an accurate value of the vapor pressure, which had been determined previously.4 Depletion of palladium from the surfaces of the specimens was minimal as the deflection of the cell remained constant, for at least 15 minutes, at each of the experimental temperatures. Lattice parameter measurements of the postrun alloys also indicated that no changes in the composition of the surfaces had occurred. The alloys were prepared by arc melting the requisite amounts of the 99.99 pct pure elements. The four most palladium-rich alloys were remelted in a levita-tion furnace since complete melting of the components had not occurred in the arc furnace. All of the alloys were subsequently homogenized at elevated temperatures in sealed alumina thimbles. After heat treatment, the alloys were analyzed chemically and were in essential agreement with the nominal compositions. The thermal histories and nominal compositions of the alloys are given in Table I. Lattice parameters of the heat-treated alloys were computed, by means of the method described by Mueller et a1. ,I2 from X-ray diffraction powder patterns obtained with filtered copper radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera. The results, which are tabulated in Table I, exhibit a slightly greater negative deviation from Vegards' law than the values reported by Raub et al.13 The diffraction lines were sharp and well-resolved and thus indicated that the alloys were homogenous. RESULTS The logarithms of the individual values of the vapor pressure of palladium were fit, by the least-squares method, as a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperatures. The constants of the equations are given in Table I along with the temperature range over which the data was accumulated. The latent heat of vaporization at 298.15"K for pure palladium, calculated by the third-law method,14 showed no systematic temperature dependence. The average value of 88,920 * 20 cal per g-atom agrees favorably with the average of the results obtained in the most reliable previous investigations.15"19 The activities of palladium were computed from the vapor pressure data at 1525', 1575", and 1625OK. Consistent with the mass spectrometric study of the atomicity of palladium vapor,lg the vapor was assumed to be monoatomic. The activities of rhodium were determined by integrating the Gibbs-Duhem equation with the aid of the a function.20 In the calculations, the activities of the pure solid metals were assigned the value of unity. From the activities, the partial and integral free energies, entropies, and enthalpies of formation at 1575° K were computed; they are assembled in Table 11.

A new log has been developed for quantitative formation evaluation which is based on a measurement of the length of time slow neutrons survive before they are captured in the rocks and fluids. The logging instrument employs a cyclically pulsed neutron generator and a gated scintillation counter which is synchronized with the source. The source emits short, intense bursts of 14 mev neutrons once every 1,000 microsec and is quiescent between bursts. During the period the source is quiescent, the detector is electronically actuated for two independent preselected intervals. A comparison of the counting rates during these two intervals gives a measure of the rate of decay of the slow neutrons and of the associated gamma radiation. The average neutron lifetime in most earth formations is in the range from 50 to 500 microsec. It can be measured during a continuous logging operation at conventional logging speeds. The design of the logging instrument is described and the results of tests are compared with theoretical predictiom. Formulas are developed which give the relationship between log response and formation properties. It is shown that the method is particularly sensitive to formation fluid salinity, and that salt water saturation can be measured accurately in either cased or open hole. The measurement can be made independent of borehole size, fluid type, casing and tool position in the hole by properly selecting the intervals during which the measurements are made. The results of tests with a prototype logging tool are given. INTRODUCTION A new nuclear logging system has been developed which employs the Accelatron,* an accelerator-type neutron source, and accurately measures formation brine saturation in an entirely new way. It has produced a type of formation log with better sensitivity, greater sampling depth and simpler quantitative interpretation than any other nuclear log thus far suggested. The new Neutron Lifetime Log* employs a pulsed electromechanical neutron source and a synchronously gated radiation detector. A prototype instrument has been field tested during recent months to demonstrate the operability of the apparatus and the feasibility of the method. Tests in wells and simulated boreholes have confirmed theoretical predictions and have shown that formation param ters can be measured independent of casing and other borehole parameters. Preliminary results of field tests have indicated that the log may have important and widespread applications. BASIC PRINCIPLE OF NEUTRON LIFETIME LOG The Neutron Lifetime Log is based on the fact that neutrons emitted by a source in a well are rapidly but not instantly captured by the material around the source. Their capture is a matter of statistical probability; the greater the number of capturing nuclei and the greater the "capture cross section", the greater is the probability that a neutron will be captured quickly. The average life of a thermal neutron in vacuum is about 13 minutes, but in common earth materials, the average neutron life ranges between extremes of about 5 rnicrosec for rock salt and perhaps 900 microsec for quartzite. The Neutron Lifetime Log responds to variations in this average neutron life. The theoretical basis for a log of this general type has been well understood by nuclear logging experts in many laboratories both in America and in Russia, and develop mental work along these lines has been in progress for many years. The Russian literature has reported both theoretical and experimental work1,2 but in this country there have been no published reports of progress toward a practical logging instrument. The logging instrument is designed to measure radiation produced by slow neutrons during selected intervals when no neutrons are being emitted by the source. The source is arranged to emit neutrons in bursts or pulses. During the quiescent interval between the pulses, it is possible to observe the exponential "decay" of the neutrons and the neutron-induced radiation as the individual neutrons progressively disappear due to capture by atoms in the formation or the borehole. When a short pulse of 14 mev neutrons is emitted by a source in a borehole, the individual neutrons are slowed to thermal energy within a few microsec. Thus, a cloud of "slow" neutrons is formed around the source within 10 to 50 microsec after the pulse. This cloud is most dense within a few inches of the source, and is progressively less dense out to a radius of about 3 ft, where radiation from the source is practically undetectable.

Jacob Reese, PittsHukQh, Pa. : I have been very much interested in the reading and discusion of Dr. Dudley's paper. As far as it selates to the data of work performed by the rails, and the determination of their physical and chemical properties, I have nothing but commendation of Dr. Dildley to express, as the investigation covered a greater range, and was performed with more care in detail, than any similar work which has come under my notice. But I beg leave to differ with Dr. Dudley in his conclusions. What are the factors of hardness? Are they not carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and manganese? Now it is an untlisputed fact among iuetallurgiml experts that pure carbon and pure iron make the best steel of all degrees of carburieation, and for all purposes. While carbon hardens, it also strengthens the metal, but silicon, phosphorus, and manganese, in hardening, make the metal also brittle, and are injarious in any amount. Carbon should be called a strengthener; and I claim that a steel rail made hard with carbon, with the other three hardeners absent or reduced to a minimum, will carry a greater tonnage than any of Dr. Dudley's soft rails. But until the basic process is put into operation in this country we cannot expect to produce Bessemer or open-hearth steel without the presence of silicon, phosphorus, and manganese, in consitlerable quautities, aod I greatly donht the possibility of reducing the perceutage of any of them by the prment practice without seriously diminishing the output, and correspondingly increasing the net cost of production; which is an important question, since the increased life of the rail may be more than balanced by its increased cost. I think that the soft rails performed a greater amount of work, because they contained a less amorlllt of silicon, phosphorus, and wangatwe (britlkrcr, if I may so term them), and that carbon does wt reduce the wearing capacity of rails. I believe that a rail made by the baqic process, with silicon, phosphorus, and manganese reduced to a minimum, and containing 0.60 carbon, will be stronger

E. S. Committee certain Standard Specifications for Copper, all of which were adopted or in process prior to Jan. 1, 1920, and sent with the standards the following histories of development and statements of use. FOR SOFT OR ANNEALED COPPER WIRE (B3-15) These specifications were originaly adopted by. the American Society for Testing Materials in 1912. They were prepared by a committee of the Society designated as Committee B-1 on Copper Wire. The committee consisted of eleven members; representatives of five manufacturers of -copper wire, of four manufacturers of electrical apparatus, and of two firms of consulting and contracting engineers. The members of the committee were designated by the officials of the companies to act as their representatives in the committee.

The application of hydraulic concentration to large scale operations has been effectively accomplished by the use of the SiphonSizer. Operation has been simple, automatic and essentially trouble free. The use of the primary desliming SiphonSizer on magnetic taconites has shown an improvement in grade of concentrate and an increase in recovery over conventional hydroseparators. Magnetic concentrates have been further deslimed and upgraded in SiphonSizers by floating a coarse middling product away from the heavier concentrate. The application of the Siphon-sizer to closed circuit grinding has met with only partial success to date. Hydraulic concentration of minerals has been practiced for a good many years. Until recently, however, the practice has been limited to equipment using a multiplicity of small pockets and relatively low tonnages and flows. The adaptation of the SiphonSizer to the concentration and classification of magnetite has changed this concept. Some fifty commercial units varying in size from a 16-ft diam circular unit to a 25x100-ft rectangular unit are currently in operation on magnetic taconites. Additional units up to 38 ft diam are under construction. Depending upon the application in the flowsheet, upgrading varies from 0.75% to 14% Fe in a single stage. To those not familiar with taconite processing, the importance of the struggle to remove economically as much silica as possible may not be fully appreciated. Perhaps some figures pertaining to transportation costs will underscore this important process. If the silica content of the concentrate from a 10,000,000 ton per year plant could be reduced by I%, a savings in boat freight, at $2.00 per ton, would amount to $200,000 annually! THE SlPHONSlZER The SiphonSizer, as illustrated in Figs. lA, 1B and 2, is a hydraulic classifier in which the hydraulic water is distributed uniformly across the bottom of the vessel by means of a system of headers (1 and 2), jet pipes (3), and nozzles (4). The depth of the teeter bed is automatically maintained by the siphon-float assembly. The feed is introduced through a feed well (5) and separated into two fractions by the effects of rising water and the density of the teetered bed. The magnetite fraction is discharged by the siphon (12) while the fine slime and light middling overflow a peripheral weir (9) to the overflow launder (6). The bed depth is controlled automatically by float valves (7), which are responsive to changes in the height of clear water supported in the superelevation tubes (8) by the density of the teetered bed. PrePatory Note.—The first part of this paper was sent to me by Mr. Emrich nearly nine months ago; and I held it, waiting for the second part, which he had promised to forward soon, so that I might submit the whole to some of his former professional associates, and advise him of their criticisms and suggestions before off'ering his work to the Institute. But, five days before the second part reached me, I received by telegraph the news of Mr. Emrich's sudden death. The paper has therefore not had the benefit of such a revision by the author as might have made it ill some respects clearer and more cornplete. Nevertheless, I believe that experts in the branch of metallurgy with which it deals will find it both original and suggestive.—A. Eilers. I. Partial ReFining iN the ANode-Furnace. During my connection with one of the large New Jersey copper-refineries, and probably before that period, from 15 to 30 per cent. of the copper-bullion received was the very foul, leady blister-copper produced from lead blast-furuace matte. It had been customary to mix a small part of this blister with each charge of purer pig-copper, in the effort to dilute it as much as possible before casting into anodes; but tank-house conditions were such that I was led to try making entire furnace-charges of this blister, and refining it as much as possible in the furnace—afterwards casting to anodes and refining elec-trolytically, in tanks and solution separate from the main bulk of the purer copper. In making this experiment, notes were made, for several furnace-charges, of everything thought to have a bearing on the question, and some interesting facts were brought out, both in the furnace-working and afterwards in the tanks.

Y.-That this paper deals with a real problem is illustrated by a statement made to the speaker a few months ago by the manager of a silver-lead property: "Our ore contains 60 per cent. silica on which the smelters are penalizing us heavily, and they are not able to take all our stuff even then. We have simply got to find some method other than smelting for getting the silver and lead out of our ores. We have had experts down here and have investigated flotation, leaching and volatilization, of which processes the latter is by far the most promising. We are continuing investigation." I was somewhat concerned in certain chloride volatilization experiments which we carried on in Denver in 1903, working on a carload of ore from Butte. Now being connected with the Cottrell process, by which method the fumes will undoubtedly he recovered if they solve the volatilization problem, I have looked into the matter again, and believe it can be developed into a commercial process. On a laboratory scale, working With silver-lead ores, experimenters have obtained a volatilization of over 90 per cent. of the total values in 30 to 60 min, on quantities of 1 to 5 lb., using a roasting dish and a muffle. That looks very good, and would be entirely commercial. On attempting to duplicate these results in a reverberatory furnace, they found that it is more likely to take 8 hr. firing to yield 75 per cent. extraction, which is not commercial at all, as it requires too much time, labor, and fuel, and the whole process is too slow. Of course it can be done, because we have done it in the laboratory.

One of the main characteristics of the development of rock mechanics in some countries is a close cooperation between experts in rock mechanics and workers in related fields, including soil mechanics and engineering geology. The purpose of this chapter is to outline the contribution that engineering geology can make to rock mechanics and to present a few examples of engineering geology studies that have been used in solving some practical rock mechanics problems. Engineering geology investigations dealing with the influence of geological factors on the physical properties of rock materials and rock masses fall into three main categories : 1) Systematic study and correlation of the physical properties of the main rock types with the petrogenetic evolution that caused the differences in the properties of these various rock types. 2) Study of the heterogeneity and anisotropy of both rock materials and rock masses. 3) Delimitation of rock masses which are approximately uniform in physical properties (quasihomogeneous units). Delimiting of the quasihomogeneous rock masses is the main contribution that the engineering geologist can make to rock mechanics. This delimiting is based on the evaluation of many complex geologic factors, not on test results alone, and therefore is most effectively done by trained engineering geologists. The foregoing types of studies are being used in Czechoslovakia for several purposes, including : 1) the compilation of regional engineering petrologic data-that is, the systematic definition of the main rock types of the country in terms of their representative physical characteristics;

Because of the nature of the environments in which metals are handled, it is natural that gases should be suspected of intruding into metallurgical operations, there to produce effects both beneficial and detrimental. The problem of tracing and controlling such effects is often made difficult by the complexity of the conditions surrounding their occurrellce, even though the fundamental mechanisms invalved may be simple and of familiar type. Many gas-metal reactions are known to be implemented by Processes of diffusion. These form a homogeneous group of phenomena which become more readily understandable when viewed together, in that the knowledge gained from one serves to interpiet the next. It is the purpose of the present Paper to present, by means of examples drawn from practice, a brief survey of the ways in which gas-metal diffusion serves and obstructs the Purposes of the metal-fabricating industries. The selection of the cases described was made by consulting more than thirty-six practicing experts whose combined experience provided an extensive coverage of the field and who were in a position to supply examples of occurrences of present day interest. The response was generous and it is regrettable that space permits the description of only a limited number of typical examples with ' but brief mention of parallel cases. The Nature of Gas-metal Diffusion The term ugas-metal diffusion," although commonly used, is ambiguous in so far as it implies that a definite group of " substances may be identified as gases and may be expected to behave in a manner distinct from other substances in association with metals. "Gases" such as oxygen and hydrogen when diffusing through a liquid or solid metal are properly components of the liquid or solid solution; they behave as alloying elements and are not to be distinguished in their diffusion characteristics from other elements, except that each has an individual rate of diffusion. On the other hand, a number of metals in certain.temperature ranges are volatile to the extent that they may appear in the form of vapor in metallurgical operations. For the sake of greater definiteness, therefore, it will be convenient to regard as "gas-metal diffusion" any process in which the result depends upon one or more of the diffusing elements appearing, at some stage, in the gaseous state, or as a compound gas. NO element, gaseous or otherwise, can diffuse through a liquid or solid metal unless it is at least slightly soluble in that metal. The elements of low atomic number

THE anthracite region, from which there is produced annually about 80,000,000 tons, or approximately 15 per cent. of the total coal supply of the United States, has a combined area of a little less than 500 sq. mi.
