WHEN history is written, the year of the blitzkrieg will go down as giving aviation its greatest impetus. No perceptible drop in military business, even with cessation of hostilities abroad, seems likely. The combined air force of the U. S. Army and Navy on July 1 was approximately 5000 planes, as against 50,000 planes currently discussed as necessary. Observers at the fronts are giving designers and metallurgists back home some realistic ideas to shoot at. As conventional runways reveal the location of airports to enemy raiders, operating bases are now masked. Difficult, often muddy and rough landing strips, requiring strong landing gears and exacting take-off and maintenance characteristics, are the specifications of war. This is "old stuff" to numerous mining operators in mountainous jungle areas where gradients up to 8 per cent are in more or less common use in such mountain landing fields. Although airplane building is not readily adaptable to assembly-line methods, a trend towards mass productions is now in evidence. Incidentally, a U.S. Army "Curtiss P-40" requires about 10,000 man hours of work to complete and is tied together with 75,000 rivets. There has been much research and commercial development in recent years in the use of chromium and nickel in steels of various types, including those intended for high-temperature service. By "high-temperature steels" are meant those specifically designed for service at elevated temperatures in steam plants, oil refineries and other industries where high-temperature operations are conducted. This paper is devoted to some preliminary data on the effect of silicon on certain of the most popular chromium-molybdenum steels now being used in quantity by the refining industry and includes a short statement on the influence of copper in steels intended for high-temperature service. Uses of Silicon Next to oxygen, silicon is the most widely distributed and abundant of the earth's substances. Although classed as a nonmetal, it is highly important in the metallurgy of all steels, having been used for years as an efficient and economical degasifier and deoxidizer. Silicon is added to various steels in the form of ferrosilicon, generally at the end of the heat so as to avoid oxidation losses. With acid steels it is added in the furnace (also in the ladle) and generally with basic steels is added in the ladle, so as to avoid reaction with the basic lining through high-temperature acidic reaction with silica, which may be formed by oxidation of the silicon alloy. Several grades of ferrosilicon are available, containing, respectively, 15, 50, 75 and 90 per cent Si. By far the largest tonnage produced is the 50 per cent grade although the 75 and 90 per cent ferro-silicons are used as ladle and furnace additions in the manufacture of steels of high silicon content. Mineral wool is a term applied to man-made fibers of silicate glass with useful properties resulting from their fibrous nature. In contrast with crystalline fibrous minerals such as asbestos, mineral wool fibers are amorphous, solid filaments produced by drawing from molten liquid and subsequent cooling. Chemically they are silicate glass with varying percentages of metallic oxides, especially those of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron, and in glass wool, sodium, potassium and boron. Other elements such as manganese, titanium, sulfur, etc., result from their presence in the raw materials used and are not purposely added. In the United States, mineral wool is a generic term and may be applied to rock, slag or glass wool. In Europe, glass silk and silicate cotton are products in the same category, but the term mineral wool is less commonly used. Current usage is to ignore the actual source and to differentiate products on a composition basis; thus rock and slag wools have about 35-45 pct of silica, while glass wool has 54 to 60 pct. Much mineral wool of slag origin is called "rock wool," and this practice is increasing, although wool made of slag from lead or copper refining is often referred to as "lead slag wool." Its greenish-gray to greenish-black dark color, due to 5-25 pct Fe (reported as FeO), distinguishes it from "white" wools made from iron, blast furnace slag containing only 1-2 pct FeO or Fe203. Most mineral wool is used for thermal insulation against heat and cold; sound absorption and isolation are probably the next most important uses. Both its thermal and acoustic values result primarily from the physical structure of the heterogeneous mixture of fibers and air which is the form in which the fibers are first obtained and handled. For this reason, within fairly wide limits, differences in chemical composition are relatively unimportant, and for most conventional applications all types are competitive in properties and value. Mineral wool intended for extreme conditions of high temperature, acid resistance and special purposes must have a chemical composition which will insure the desired properties. This may differ greatly from that of ordinary wools; for example one product approximately 98 pct Si02 and another consisting of 50 pct A1203 and 50 pct Si02 are produced and sold for high temperature service up to 2000°F or more. These are considerably more expensive to manufacture and their cost limits their use. Historical The manufacture of mineral wool consists fundamentally of a process which subjects molten material to shear and/or tensile forces that draw them into fibers. The liquids are cooled at a rate which solidifies them quickly. As a solid glass they are technically super-cooled liquids since they have no true melting point. The drawing out of glass into thin rods, filaments and tubes was known from very early times, and present day continuous production of glass filament for textiles was evolved gradually by adapting hand methods to automatic machinery. BECAUSE of the country's vast mineral resources, Alexander Von Humboldt, the great German scientist who visited Mexico, or the Kingdom of New Spain, a hundred and fifty years ago, very aptly called that country the "Treasure Chest of the World." During the three centuries of Spanish rule, mining was the principal industry of the kingdom, the largest contributor to the country's prosperity, the chief common denominator in Mexican economic life. Public revenues and private fortunes, employment and markets, agriculture and trade, charities and churches, the incentive for frontier settlement and exploration, and the funds for outfitting the expedition of colonizer and conquistador-all were dependent upon the streams of precious metals that flowed century after century from the mines of Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Real del Monte, San Luis Potosi, and scores of other minería that lay scattered everywhere throughout the land. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation sponsored by The Coates Steel Products Company. The objective was to determine the relative effects of certain chemical and physical properties on the wear resistance of grinding balls when grinding cement. In making this study, a number of types of balls were used in both dry and wet grinding in commercial ball mills. The radioactive-tracer technique was used in separating the test balls from the rest of the mill charge and in sorting the different types of halls that were all tested at the same time for each of the grinding operations. PROCESSING OF GRINDING BALLS In order to determine whether the properties of grinding balls, namely, composition, microstructure and hardness, can be related to the rate of wear, the halls used in this study were selected to represent various combinations of these properties. It was recognized that the mechanism of wear was not the same in the wet mill as in the dry mill. Therefore, the types of balls tested in each of the two environments were not necessarily the same. However, all of the types of balls evaluated in the dry mill were tested simultaneously for one time period, while those evaluated in the wet mill were tested simultaneously for three different time periods. All of the test balls were separated from the charge when the mill was dumped. All of the balls were of 0.940-inch diameter when charged, and all but the regular production balls were finish ground to this size to eliminate the decarburized surface layers. The steels and processing methods used, as well as the micro-structures and hardness levels of the balls, are described as follows: Regular production forged SAE 1095 steel balls were used in both the wet and dry mills. They were forged to a nominal diameter of 0.940 inch and quenched in oil from the forging temperature. Each retained a partially decarburized surface layer from the forging bar stock; the maximum depth of this layer was about 0.030 inch and the decarburization was negligible where the ball was sheared from the bar. The hardness at the surface was 40 to 46 Rock-well C in the partially decarburized area and 57 to 62 Rockwell C in the areas not decarburized. The hardened zone extended to a depth of about one-third of the radius. Below the decarburized layer, the hardened zone consisted primarily of hard as-quenched martensite with varying amounts of retained austenite. This structure changed to fine pearlite at a depth of about one-third of the radius. In order to eliminate the effect of the decarburized layer, a set of production balls of SAE 1095 steel was forged to about a 1-inch diameter, quenched in oil from the forging temperature, and ground on ball-bearing grinding equipment to a 0.940-inch diameter to remove the decarburized layer. The balls' hardened zones were similar to those in the previous set. The hardness of the finished surfaces was 52 to 60 Rockwell C. A slight amount of decarburization apparently remained after the removal of about 0.030 inch from the surface. Balls of this type were tested in the dry mill only. One of the most important problems of reservoir mechanics is the prediction of the behavior of a gas and oil producing reservoir for a variety of production programs. In the absence of a knowledge of the behavior of even idealized systems, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to determine which production program would yield maximum economic recovery. The problem was formulated mathematically many years ago, hilt a solution of the equations had never been obtained because of their extreme complexity. The solution of the problem became possible, however, with the advent of modern computing machines. This paper describes a digital method of solving the problem and discusses some of the results which have been obtained to date. The IBM Type 701 Electronic Data Processing Machines located at IBM's New York Scientific Computing Service were used successfully to perform the computations. The flow of gas and oil through a reservoir can be described mathematically by two second-order, nonlinear partial differential equations which must be solved simultaneously. All derivatives were replaced by finite differences to bring the equations into a form suitable for digital calculations. A number of finite ditference formulations were investigated and one form was found which resulted in stable, convergent solutions. This form was used to obtain .solutions for both radial and linear systems producing by solution gas drive. The results presented in this paper are: (a) saturation profile within the hypothetical reservoir vs. time, (b) pres.strre profile within the hypothetical reservoir vs. time. (c) gas-oil ratio vs. cumulative recovery, and (d) ultimate recovery. The saturation profile clearly shows the effect of critical gas saturation. The saturation near the well-bore drops quickly to the critical gas saturation and remains essentially at that value until the remainder of the reservoir also has dropped to the critical gas saturation. The pressure profile shows a smooth variation of pressure across the reservoir. The gas-oil ratio drops slightly during the early stage of production until the critical gas saturation is reached, rises rapidly from then on and eventually passes through a sharp maximum just before the economic limit of production is reached. For the radial example presented in this paper, the average oil .saturation of the reservoir at a time corresponding to the limit of economic production was 56.5 per cent and the ultimate recovery was 6.86 per cent. The difference between change in saturation and ultimate recovery is caused by .shrinkage of the oil phase. The solution time with the 701 Computer is sufficiently short to permit an economically feasible investigation of the effects of variation of the many parameters which describe an oil reservoir. In particular, the ultimate recovery for various systems can he determined as a function of rock and fluid properties, of well spacing. and of production rate. INTRODUCTION The effective planning for maximum economic depletion of oil reservoirs is one of the major problems confronting oil producers. The most important part of the planning is prediction of the response of the oil reservoir to a particular production program. A high degree of accuracy is often required in mine-surveying, in order that expensive mining work may not be misdirected. The making of underground connections by drifts or shafts located as the result of surveys presents a crucial test of correctness not usually involved in any other class of surveying. In view of these considerations, the present notes and description of a survey made in June, 1890, for the San Francisco shaft of the New Almaden quicksilver-mines, may be of interest to members of the Institute who are surveyors. The purpose of this survey was to locate on the surface a vertical 2-compartment shaft (3.5 by 7 ft.), to connect with another vertical shaft, of practically the same size, which had been sunk a number of years before from an adit-level about 240 ft. vertically below the surface, to a deeper, so-called 600-ft. level. It will be seen, of course, that the most important matter was to secure an exact coincidence in vertical line, so that the resulting continuous vertical shaft from the surface should have no offset or irregularity at the point of junction between its two parts. The levels were of less importance; but, as the hoisting-works were to be placed in position and the new shaft permanently timbered from the start, its correct alignment was an essential requirement. The important features of the work, therefore, were the methods used in determining with certainty : 1. That the shaft was located in the right place in a general way; 2. That the ordinary inaccuracies of linear and angular measurements were so reduced as to insure correctness of location within certain defined and allowable limits. Instruments.—Thc instruments used were: a Buff and Berger transit-theodolite, with a 6-in. horizontal plate, reading to 10 seconds; a Heller and Brightly Y-level; a Chestermán steel tape, graduated in tenths and hundredths of a foot; and New York leveling-rods, graduated to thousandths of a foot.

A CHAPTER of appealing interest was added to the industrial history of the Southwest early in June, when the War Production Board gave final approval to the erection of a blast furnace, a battery of coke ovens, an ore-beneficiation plant, and other facilities for the production of pig iron in northeastern Texas, just north of the East Texas oil field. For many years the people of Texas and adjoining states have cherished the ambition and desire that eventually an iron and steel industry drawing upon local mineral resources would be established to serve Southwestern markets. The existence in this vicinity of valuable deposits of iron ore, limestone, and coking coal has been known in a general way for many years, and efforts have been made from time to time to use them in the production of iron. The present development promises to bring to realization the dreams of the men who have visualized what the establishment of this basic industry would mean to the region.

INTRODUCTION Documentary complications arise from the risk apportionment in project financing which generally means that once the project is up and running and has satisfied the lender's completion test, the loan agreement specifically limits the lender's recourse to the project and its assets. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the special considerations which apply to industrial minerals projects and explore the reasons why so few project financings are negotiated in this industry. SIZE Small projects do not warrant the relatively high costs of negotiating and documenting project financing. The extent of the documentation is directly proportionate to either (a) the degree of risk apportionment, or (b) the amount of control given to lawyers to negotiate the documents. Although one would like to believe that project-finance documentation could be off-the-shelf, it is almost always necessary to tailor the documents to the mine development itself and the individual desires of the borrower. Accordingly, the documentation costs and initial expenses are seldom less than $40,000, and for complex projects can reach $400,000. In addition, banks often charge an up-front fee to partly compensate them for their staff time and partly to increase their yield on what is deemed to be a "riskier" loan asset. Another factor is the generally lower debt:equity ratio when bankers are uncertain of the accuracy of the cash flow projections. The ratio of the amount of cash flow left over after debt service to debt service itself is a key tool for project finance (debt service coverage). Bankers will require a higher coverage ratio for industrial minerals projects because of the relatively higher uncertainties in the following categories: Prices Markets Geology/Quality Transportation Environmental This, in turn, means that lower debt:equity ratios are the norm for new industrial minerals projects. INDUSTRY STRUCTURE It is hardly worthwhile to generalise about a field as diverse as industrial minerals, but there are four other structural reasons why project financing has not been widely applied. 1. The most obvious example is the predominance of small-sized operations, largely a function of transportation economics. Geological conditions also contribute to their dispersion. 2. Often, the product is only a small part of a company's business in contrast to many petroleum, metals, or coal companies whose sole business is the production of the raw material. The construction industry is a good example here for cement, gypsum, crushed stone, sand and gravel, and the drilling-mud services business for barite and bentonite. A company is unlikely to jeopardise its main business through the failure of a project financing on one of its key inputs. The corrollary is that the mined input is often regarded as a cost centre and not run on the sort of economic basis suitable for project financing. 3. There may be a reluctance to reveal key aspects of an industrial minerals venture to an outsider for purely competitive reasons. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the, information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may, not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.
