Notwithstanding the rapidly increasing use of copper, due to the extension of its applications within the last few years, the fact of its continued steady decline in price stands prominently forward. Nor have we far to look for the cause. The opening up of the vast copper-deposits of our Western States and territories is the metallurgical event of the last five years. We must not forget, in looking at the new field, the changed conditions under which the metallurgist must work, as compared with the previous history of copper-smelting. Until quite recently, the copper-plants of the country were few in number; and the concentration of industry implied in this circumstance, allowed many practices which must be considered as inapplicable to the conditions offered at the many mines which have of late become such important factors in our copper-production. Thus the old style of smelting the ore for matte in brick furnaces, involving great expense and time in their construction, while deservedly losing repute even in its old strongholds, in comparison with water-jacketed smelters, is still in some cases adhered to. But to put up such furnaces at Western mines would be out of the question. The large and continual need of brick for relining and repairs acts as an effectual bar, when such furnaces come into competition with the light, portable, and easily managed water-jacketed smelters of improved types. It is owing to the present unusual activity, manifested in the opening up of new copper-properties and the erection of plants for working them, that any improvement in furnace-construction is of especial interest and importance. EATON (authors' reply)-We have made considerable study but we have not gotten around to very many of the barrier pillars. I would not say that any or all of them have been designed to the strict figures of this formula. Most of those ex¬amined will not hold back the water that they are supposed to hold back. E. T. POWELL-If the pillar remains ac¬cording to the Mine Inspectors' formula? W. L. EATON-We have not found very many where the provisions were followed. E. T. POWELL-Where the Mine Inspec¬tors' formula has been fully complied with, have there been failures or not? W. L. EATON-I cannot say. Most of these barrier pillars probably were designed in accordance with this formula, but most of them, if they were so designed, are not in that shape now because a large number of them will not hold back the water; they have been reinforced, and they are punc¬tured in various places. Holes have been driven through them to relieve the hydro¬static pressure to avoid a failure. They do not dare to have a failure. In many instances, the barrier is punc¬tured to avoid a failure. In order to mine their coal safely, many companies must pump water from mines that were aban¬doned many years ago. R. MAIZE-That is true, Mr. Eaton, but do you know of any case where a barrier pillar actually failed and flooded an ad¬joining mine when the pillar had been left in accordance with the Mine Inspectors formula?

CLEVENGER, Palo Alto, Cal.-Since the precipitation of extremely dilute solutions as regards cyanide presents one of the greatest problems of zinc-dust precipitation, I should like to ask Mr. Clark the minimum concentration in cyanide of the solution from which it is possible to precipitate satisfactorily the gold with zinc dust in Homestake practice. A. J. CLARK.-For a day's work about 0.015 per cent. That is precipitating a very low-grade solution, very low in alkalinity. It requires probably 0.2 lb. of zinc dust to the ton. JOHN A. FULTON, Melones, Cal.-At the Melones mine, we have been working very low-grade rock for a number of years, the process being amalgamation and concentration up to the last year. The value of the ore increased so that we had to supplement the concentration with a sand and slime plant. Classification was a problem, since to install classifiers would mean tearing the mill all to pieces. We are therefore making use of a Wilfley table for this purpose. (communication to the Secretary*). -I have read this paper with considerable interest and agree perfectly with Mr. Kranz that steel for castings made in an electric furnace is not necessarily, because of that fact, all good steel, and also that the qualities which he mentions, such as absence of segregation, elimination of `sulphur, great tenacity, etc., can be obtained in an electric furnace if operated under proper metallurgical conditions. An unusually low content of sulphur in steel for castings is not, of course, an absolute necessity and the range of this element usually obtained in steel made in basic open-hearth furnaces is sufficiently low to meet all physical requirements. Caliper logging is a practice of measuring the variations in the diameter of the open hole in a well. This information is useful for many purposes, among which are: Determining the volumetric capacity of the portion of open hole to be cemented; the amount of gravel to be used for gravel-packing a well; the size and location of seat for a packer to be placed in a well; studying the effects of nitroglycerin shots; studying the effects of acidizing; studying the cause of drill-pipe failures; studying drilling technique; geological correlations. This is a new practice in oil fields and is eliminating considerable guesswork. Introduction Caliper logging of the open hole in oil wells, recently introduced and now showing initial results in many sections of the country, is providing information that is filling a long-felt need in oil-well cementing and in numerous other oil-field practices. Briefly, it measures the variations in diameter, of the open hole in a well. This direct physical measurement of the strati-graphic profile has considerable value for subsurface interpretations by the geologist, engineer, driller and others charged with the responsibility of properly completing and repairing oil and gas wells. The caliper shown in Fig. I is run into a well in closed position. The four arms are released when logging is to start. These arms are independent of each other. As the calipers are pulled upward through the open hole, the arms are like nimble fingers feeling the changing profile of the hole. This mechanical action is in turn converted into an electrical circuit, which is connected to a recording mechanism at the surface. a. Lowered into well in closed position. b. Arms released. Readings are made while caliper travels upward. Direct recording is made at surface, in inches. The recording of the diameter of the hole is directly in inches.

Precipitation of tin from Pb-Sn alloys (lead-rich) occurs by the nucleation and growth of hemispherical cells which consist of tin lomelloe interspersed in the depleted solid solution. Nucleation and growth of these cells and the tin interlamellar spacing at various compositions and temperatures have been investigated. The interlamellar spacing increases approximately as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the supersaturation ratio. For constant initial tin concentration the concentration of cell nuclei increases with decreasing temperature to a limiting temperature-independent value. The kinetic results support the view that the cell growth rote is governed by the diffusion of tin along the cell boundary. In the main, the results confirm the authors' earlier deductions, drawn from resistometric and calorimetric data, about the precipitation mechonism. IT has been shown1, 2 that tin (ß) precipitates from lead-rich (a) PbSn solutions by the nucleation and growth of cells (cellular or discontinuous precipitation). These cells consist of tin lamellae, with a spacing 1, interspersed in a depleted a solution. Reorientation of a also accompanies cell growth. The kinetics of cellular precipitation of tin from lead have been measured by resistometric2, 3 and ca1orimetric1, 3 techniques. The time-transformation isotherms (t equals time; x, volume fraction of specimen transformed) of the initial rapid precipitation, which drains about 60 pet of the tin from solution, have been described by a kinetic law having the form x = 1 —exp (—bt n) [I] where n usually has the value 3.0. It was shown" that this law and the other kinetic facts can be explained satisfactorily if it is assumed that the cells grow at a constant rate and that all the cells nucleate in a time negligible in comparison with the period of cell growth before impingement. Thus, for hemispherical cells b = (2/3)pNG3 [21 where G is the rate of cell growth in cm per sec, and N is the number of cell nuclei per unit volume. The rapid rate of cell growth at low temperatures can be accounted for"' if it is assumed that the dissolved tin drains to the lamellae edges by diffusion along the sweeping cell boundary rather than by diffusion through the a crystal (volume diffusion). For cell growth governed by cell boundary diffusion it was shown, approximately G=2(X° - X° / X° ) DBA / l2 where A equals the thickness of the cell boundary; D R, the coefficient of diffusion of tin atoms within the boundary; and X° and X, are the atom fractions of tin in the supersaturated and saturated solutions, respectively. THE gypsum industry of Canada, like all others connected with the construction business, has felt the full effect of the depression during the past few years, and sales of its products have been greatly curtailed. The year 1934, however, saw a decided turn for the better and a gradual but steady improvement is noticeable in all its branches. In many ways the depression has been a blessing in disguise to the gypsum industry; during the years from 1926 to 1930, demand increased so rapidly that companies were forced to expand and often new apparatus and machinery were placed in operation regardless of expense, or plants already existing were taxed to their limit and forced to keep running with the minimum amount of repairs. The depression, therefore, has really given the industry what might be called a breathing spell, in which it has had time to take stock of its position, to reduce its costs of production, to devote more serious attention to the quality of its products, and to con-solidate its operations into a smooth working whole, which as conditions improve will enable it to meet the demands of the trade with more varied products of a quality hitherto unattained. Progress in the gypsum industry, however, has not been confined to the years of the depression, for some of the greatest advances occurred under the spur of increased demand for its products by the building trade. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly some of the out-standing trends in the development of the gypsum industry in Canada during the past 10 or 12 years.

The interaction of the crlloying eletnenls, nickel and chromium, with the impurity elements, antimony, pIzosphorus, tin, and arsenic, to producse reversible temper brittleness in a series of high-purity steels containing 0.40 wt pct C has been investigated. The alloyed steels contained approximately 3.5 pcl Ni, 1.7 pct Cr, and 0.05 to 0.08 pct of the particular irnpurity to be investigated. Susceptibility to teirlper embrittlement was measured by comparing the notched-bar transition temperature of each steel after quenching from the final temper and after very slow cooling (step cooling;) following the final temper. A plain carbon steel without alloying elements, bu/ ud/h 0.08 pel Sh, does not embrittle when step-cooled through the emzbrittling range of temperatures. The same embrittling treatment, applied to a steel with about the same antinzony content but with nickel and chvonziunz added, causes a 700°C increase in transition temperature. If chromium or nickel is the only alloying element, the increase in transition temperature is only 50%, again with antimony present. A carbon-free iron containing nickel, chromium, and antimony shou~s a 200°C shift in transition temperature for the same thermal treatment. Specific alloy-impurily interactions are also observed for the other impurity elements, phosphorus, tin, and arsenic. Additional investigations involving electron microscopy, trzicrohard-ness tests of vain boundaries, minor additions of zirconiutn and the rare earth and noble metals, nzainly with negative results, are also described. HE particular type of embrittlement investigated is that which is encountered in alloy steels tempered in the temperature range from about 350" to 525'C or slowly cooled through this range of temperatures when tempered above this range. This type of embrittlement is sometimes called reversible temper brittleness to distinguish it from the embrittlement indicated by a minimum in the room-temperature V -notch Charpy energy vs tempering-temperature curve encountered in the range 28 0" to 350°C. Temper brittle-ness seriously restricts the use of many alloy steels since it precludes tempering or use in the embrittling range of temperatures and may significantly raise the ductile-brittle transition temperature of heavy-section forgings and castings tempered above the embrittling range, since such sections cannot be sufficiently rapidly cooled after tempering to avoid embrittlement. The very voluminous literature of temper brittle-ness up to about 1960 has been reviewed by woodfine' and LOW.' Of particular significance to the present investigation was the demonstration by Balajiva, Cook, and worn3 that high-purity Ni-Cr steel does not exhibit temper brittleness and the subsequent detailed and systematic study by Steven and Balajiva~ of the effect of impurity additions on the susceptibility to embrittlement of Ni-Cr steels. Steven and Balajiva showed that, of the impurities which may be found in commercial steels, Sb, As, P, Sn, Mn, and Si could all produce temper brittleness in a high-purity Ni-Cr steel. The principal purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of particular alloy-impurity combinations on susceptibility to temper embrittlement. The steels used were high-purity 0.30 to 0.40 wt pct C steels containing 3.5 wt pct Ni and 1.7 wt pct Cr, separately or in combination. The susceptibility of these steels was then determined when approximately 500 ppm by weight of antimony, arsenic, phosphorus, or tin were added as an impurity. The melting, casting, and forging practices used in the preparation of the materials investigated are described in Appendix A. Table A-I in this appendix shows the analysis of all steels to be discussed. The steels were produced as 20- or 2-lb heats. The smaller heats were used after it had been demonstrated (see Appendix B) that a small, round, notched test specimen could be used to measure the shift in the ductile-brittle transition temperature caused by temper brittleness with about the same result as that obtained by Charpy testing. HEAT TREATMENT Unless otherwise noted, all steels were tested for embrittlement in the tempered martensitic condition. A typical heat treatment for a 0.40 C, 3.5 Ni, 1.7 Cr steel was: 1 hr at 870"C, in argon, quench into oil at 100"C, quench into liquid nitrogen, temper 1 hr at 625"C, and water-quench. The warm oil quench was used where quench-cracking was encountered; otherwise the initial quench was into room-temperature oil or water. For other compositions austenitizing temperatures were 50°C above Acs with the remainder of the thermal cycle the same. Steels in this condition, with no further heat treatment, are designated as non-embrittled. The above quenching and tempering cycle for the 0.40 pct C steels resulted in as-quenched hardnesses of 48 to 53 RC and as-tempered hardnesses of 24 to 31 Rc except in the case of the plain nickel or plain carbon steels. In these, the as-tempered hardness was as low as 80 to 90 Rg. No attempt was made to adjust the tempering temperature to obtain the same hardness in ali steels since it was felt that a uniform thermal cycle was more important than exactly equivalent hardness values. THIS apparatus was designed primarily to meet the demand for a quick, efficient stopping to seal off the burning area temporarily during a mine fire, but it can be used in any circumstance where an immediate brattice is required for ventilation control. In using the old style brattice, mine-rescue workers have found it difficult, in smoke-laden drifts and stopes, to erect an effective stopping with wooden frame and canvas. Stulls must first be cut to the proper length, the canvas tacked in place, and the numerous irregularities of the walls and back must be caulked. This operation requires the employment of axes, saws, and hammers, which cannot easily and safely be handled in dense smoke. The fire fighters have often been forced to abandon their brattice, unfinished, because of the rapid approach of the fire, or because of the exhausted sup- ply of oxygen in their breathing apparatus. Commercial demand for gold in the United States is important. It has a large impact on the total world commercial and overall non-monetary demand. Given the present free market price and our need to import gold, it has a substantial adverse effect upon our international payments position. But, according to most recent estimates, the United States demand is perhaps no more than 20% of the world as a whole. In 1971, United States consumption was estimated at 215.6 tons out of a total of 1,412.1 tons 1. This figure is very close to the 16% figure developed by Consolidated Gold Fields as the average for the years 1968-1970.2 Surveys of both production and use of gold on a world-wide basis are not new. With the bulk of gold production in only a few countries, it has been possible to develop fairly reliable series on gold output. Estimates have been developed on the known reserves of gold and probable output at various prices.3 On the demand side, figures have been somewhat less complete and reliable. The Bank for International Settlements and the Director of the United States Mint have regularly published estimates of commercial use in major industrial countries. The IMF has issued an increasingly comprehensive survey in its Annual Reports. The IMF has attempted to cover all nations-not restricting its efforts to major industrial nations-and has tried to estimate both gold taken for commercial uses (Estimated Industrial and Artistic Use) and for private hoarding. Their method is to begin with data on free world output plus any net sales by the Soviet Union, subtract any additions to world monetary stocks (or add to available supply for any net reductions in world monetary stocks), subtract estimates for commercial demand and have left as a residual an estimate for private hoarding. The method is straightforward and simple but the quality of the data is suspect. Industry sources tend to believe the figures as biased on the low side because of a persistent tendency to underreport gold movements.4

WITH capacity of 51,000 tpd, the Morenci concentrator produces approximately 49,000 tons of tailing for final deposition. Disposal involves distribution of thickened tailing to dams in such a manner that solids can be used for dam construction and water can be impounded for reclamation. During early operation, although tonnage treated was lower, it was necessary to use orthodox disposal practices in the areas available for tailing. Trestles mounted on a series of dams, constructed of borrow material, carried the pipelines from which tailing were spigoted behind the dams. When adequate disposal areas were finally established, it became desirable to look for more efficient methods. The idea of placing the distribution pipe or manifold directly on the crest of the dam was advanced in 1945. After a period of testing, that procedure in modified form replaced the older trestle arrangement. Marked economies resulted, and time required to prepare dams for succeeding storage cycles was greatly reduced. The tailing disposal area for the Morenci concentrator lies south and southwest of the concentrator building. Ample storage space is available. A wide valley contains three sharply defined ravines lying on an average slope of 4 pct. The more central of these ravines, and the largest of the three, is known as Morenci canyon, which provides substantially more tailing storage area than the other two. Stargo canyon lies to the west; the other is appropriately named East canyon. Total area of the tailing disposal site is nearly 31/4 sq miles, or about 2000 acres. The storage area in use was somewhat more than 850 acres at the end of 1954, or 16 acres per 1000 tons of tailing to be stored daily. At the present time none of the east side dams are in regular use but they are available in emergency. There are five dams on the west side (in Morenci and Stargo canyons) as well as two auxiliary dams adjacent to No. 4 West and No. 5 West. This has made it possible to concentrate men and equipment in a smaller area with consequent savings in both manpower and machinery. Tailing Thickening: Tailing from the flotation process reaches the thickeners with a solid content of about 18 pct. The launder carrying this pulp is subdivided at a central point into seven launders carrying a proportional share to each of seven tailing thickeners, which are located in Morenci canyon close to the concentrator. Five of these thickeners are 300 ft diam and two are 325 ft diam. Thickeners are of the peripheral traction type and rakes travel at the rate of one revolution in 37 to 39 min. The entire installation provides 500,000 sq ft of settling area, or approximately 101/2 sq ft per ton of tailing to be thickened daily.

Numerous designs of linings and accessories, including dams, lifters, and heat exchangers, contribute greatly to kiln efficiencies. Greater conductivity is achieved with basic brick than with fireclay and high-alumina refractories, depending largely upon the use of steel plates in radial joints between adjacent brick to increase heat transfer through the lining. Refractory lifters expose all portions of the load to radiant or convective heat and raise some portions to higher temperatures by cascading the load down through the path of the hot gases. AMONG the many factors involved in rotary kiln efficiency, advantageous use of refractories is of major importance. So far as kiln lining alone is concerned durability is most significant, as shutdowns for repairs are costly in fuel consumption and production losses. Aside from selection of refractories best suited to the widely varying conditions under which rotary kilns are operated, lining design and accessory constructions within the kiln are highly important. The refractory most economical for any combination of operating conditions can be selected from a wide range of alumina-silica and basic refractories, including insulating, castable, and plastic fire bricks. In several cases silica brick can be used to advantage. Alumina contents of alumina-silica refractories range from 35 to 90 pct in increments of 5 to 10 pct. In general, bricks of relatively low alumina content are best for abrasion resistance, an important property for the brick used in chain sections of cement kilns or in feed end sections of limestone kilns. High-duty fireclay bricks of approximately 40 pct alumina and 55 pct silica are used to line the intermediate zones. Super-duty fireclay brick at slightly higher cost is warranted in operation of kilns with high intermediate zone temperatures and severe spalling conditions. Alumina-silica refractories with an alumina content of 50 pct and higher, termed high-alumina brick, are available in commercial classes of 50, 60, 70, 80, 85, and 90 pct alumina content. These refractories are generally used as high temperature zone linings or placed adjacent to the basic brick-lined sections when the treatment they are required to withstand is excessively severe. Use of basic refractories is confined mainly to zones of maximum temperature and most severe chemical action. Basic refractories ordinarily employed for high temperature zone linings of many rotary kilns comprise the classes shown in Table I. Each class is peculiarly well suited to various particular combinations of working conditions. The approximate chemical analyses of these classes also illustrate differences in compositions with respect to the major components.

In the case of a reservoir where the oil underlies a large gas cap and overlies bottom water, production can be inzproved considerably if wells are perforated below the water-oil contact rather than opposite the oil-bearing section. The theoretical arguments for this improvement, which in some cases may be tenfold, are supported by experimental evidence. INTRODUCTION Reservoirs frequently consist of one sand body containing an oil layer underlying a thick, gas-bearing section and overlying bottom water (Fig. 1). Wells in such reservoirs are customarily opened up opposite the oil-bearing interval or, rather, opposite the lower part of this interval (Fig. 2). More often than not, it is inefficient or prohibited to blow off large quantities of gas with the oil. This im-psses a severe limitation on the drawdown, which results in low oil-production rates. Because of the small difference in specific gravity between oil and water, the latter will easily cone upwards, so that the production of water together with the oil is not prevented by this completion method. In such a situation wells should be opened deeper, in the originally water-bearing zone. The gas can be shut off by not perforating over the upper part of the interval (Fig. 3) or by a tubing hung close to the bottom of the interval (Fig. 4). Initially much water will be produced, but when steady-state conditions have been established (as depicted in Figs. 3 and 4) larger drawdowns are permissible than in a conventionally completed well, and correspondingly higher oil-production rates will result. Water cuts are only slightly higher because of the small effect of gravity on the water-oil flow distribution. CALCULATIONS The ratio of improvement has been estimated by means of approximate calculations. The completion depicted in Fig. 4 is the most convenient basis for these calculations. By postulating that vertical flow gradients can be disregarded, the Appendix shows that the well-known Dupuit formula can be obtained except for some complication due to the presence of two fluids rather than one. The Appendix makes the reasonable assumption that, for suitable boundary conditions, the oil layer occupies a constant fraction of the total fluid height throughout the reservoir. The oil- and water-production rates can thus be related to the liquid levels in the borehole as follows:

JAY A. CARPENTER, Tonopah, Nev: (communication to the Secretary*).-This description of the Santa Gertrudis mill is of great interest to the operators of similar silver mills in Nevada. At the San Francisco meeting last September there were two excellent papers presented on Nevada silver mills; one by A. H. Jones on The Tonopah Plant of the Belmont Milling Co., and the other by E. E. Carpenter on Cyaniding Practice of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev. At the same meeting, I presented a paper on-Slime Agitation and Solution Replacement Methods at the West End Mill, Tonopah, Nev., covering this .particular feature of our milling practice. A comparison of the data presented in these four papers is interesting in that, while the general design and practice is much the same in all cases, there is a wide difference in the design and practice in the various departments of 'the mills. It is to be regretted that Mr. Rose did not round out. this excellent article by following Mr. Jones's and Mr. Carpenter's' lead in giving the average gold and silver content of the ore milled and the resulting tailing, with the consumption of chemicals and the? cost of milling. The practice of the Santa Gertrudis mill in the use of ?cyanide and zinc offers an interesting comparison with that of the Nevada mills, and a discussion of this point may bring out the reasons for the differences that exist.

An analysis of the wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. On the basis of information developed in this study, the factors of major importance in reducing soluble loss are: filter wash, wash zone size, filter capacity, filter feed pulp dilution, blow back, filter cloth, water to repulp, water to primary wash, water to feed pulp and thickener underflow. The wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit has been used in many hydrometallurgical plants to separate solute from leach solids. As many as 20 to 30 plant operating variables determine the performance of the wash circuit and hence the soluble loss. The complex relationships of these variables, with each other and with soluble loss, make the evaluation of their effect on mill performance difficult. An analysis of this type of circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. THE CIRCUIT The diagram in Fig. 1 represents the operation of the wash thickener-two stage filter circuit. This circuit provides for counter current, cross current or for a combination of countercurrent-cross current operation. The feed pulp stream, J, is intended to include any solution or water, other than primary and secondary filtrate, which enters the wash thickener. Except for filter washing, the operations in the circuit are simple mixing operations which can be described by material balance. The concentration of solute in the filtrate and cake solution after application of wash liquor cannot be described by simple material balance. The displacement washing equation, derived by Rhodes1 and extended by Choundhury and Dahlstrom,2 appears to best describe this case of miscible displacement in porous media. In a useful form, it is

The data for mining geophysical activity in 1966 has been made available to SME by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. This data is based on 288 voluntary responses for a return of 59% to 487 questionnaires that were circulated among worldwide mining companies, universities, and government institutions that conduct or utilize mining geophysical surveys or carry out allied research efforts.
