The most important event in the history of mining in the United States was the discovery of gold in California, which led to the rapid development, not only of a new industry, but of a new empire. The settlement of the Pacific slope was making but slow progress under the inducements of a scanty commerce in furs and hides. The liberal grants offered by the government to agricultural pioneers in Oregon had attracted to the Willamette valley and other favored points in that territory a limited population; hot the government of the Mexicans in California was positively unfavorable to enterprise. It is true that gold was known to exist in the country. Rumors of it were current among the trappers, and placers had actually been worked in what is now Los Angeles County; but the padres of the neighboring mission of San Fernando had discouraged the business as demoralizing to their flocks; and the existence of the precious metal was not widely known; still less was its distribution northward suspected. The discovery of gold, January 19th) 1848, at Sutter's saw-mill, on the south fork of the American River, afterward famous as Coloma, in Eldorado County, was the beginning of the new epoch. This discovery was made by James Wilson Marshall, a partner in the mill, who observed in the debris washed down by the tail-race a glittering fragment of a mineral unknown to him. Suspecting it to be gold, he sought for further specimens, and obtained, in the course of a few days, several ounces of it. Tests subsequently

Fifty to 75 million years ago, hydrocarbon-bearing rocks were formed in the Green River formation of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. The hydro- carbons can be extracted from these rocks, marl- stone but misnamed oil shale, after crushing and intense heating. At about 900°F the marlstone decomposes to produce liquid shale oil. A press release from the Colony Development Co. describes a process which may permit, for the first time, economically feasible access to shale oil. Shale oil has resisted economic extraction for almost three centuries. According to the USBM, a patent was issued as early as 1684 in England to produce "oyle from a kind of stone". France produced oil from marlstone in 1838 and a dozen years later, Scotland started an oil shale industry, producing kerosine, that lasted nearly 100 years. In both countries, the process involved crushing the stone and retorting it to decompose the kerogen-a long and costly process at that time. In 1859, Edwin L. Drake brought in the first oil well in Titusville, Pa., and shale oil faded into oblivion.

Quenched alloys, prepared by powder metallurgical techniques, were examined by microscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. The compositions and heat treatments were chosen so that the chromium and nickel solvuses could be determined and a range of composition and temperature, in which a eutectoid had been reported, could be explored in small intervals. The results showed no evidence of eutectoid reactions having taken place. ALLOYS containing iron, chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are extensively used in high-temperature applications. In order to provide basic information on the solid-state reactions that occur in such alloys, the National Bureau of Standards is engaged in an extensive study of the equilibrium phases in the binary, ternary, and quaternary systems involving these four metals. Attention was directed to the chromium-nickel system because a review of the literature showed conflicting data. A recent compendium1 of the constitution of binary alloys gives two diagrams for the chromium-nickel system, one a simple eutectic and the second a diagram showing a eutectoid and a eutectic. The eutectoid was the result of an allotropic transformation in a high-temperature solid-solution form of a chromium-rich phase called 0. The approximate temperature and composition of the eutectoid was 1200°C and 30 at. pct Ni. In the preliminary study, at the Bureau, no transformation was indicated in the chromium-rich phase of ternary and quaternary alloys in which chromium and nickel were major components. Similar results have been reported from time to time in the literature,2-8 In consequence of this situation, a systematic study was made of the constitution of heat-treated chromium-nickel alloys using metallographic and X-ray diffraction methods. The compositions of the alloys were selected so as to determine the boundaries of the chromium-rich and the nickel-rich phases and to explore in small intervals the ranges in composition and temperature in which the eutectoid had been reported. The results of this study are reported and discussed in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials, Alloys, and Heat Treatments—The alloys were prepared by a powder metallurgy technique similar to that used in earlier work.9 Analyses of the materials used are given in Table I. Powders were mixed using a vibrator in 30-g batches of predetermined composition; 2-g pellets were made from the mixture by compacting at room temperature in a 1/2-in. diam mold under 60,000 lb per sq in. pressure. The pellets were sintered in dry hydrogen for 10 days at 1300°C. At the end of the sintering treatment the specimens were quenched in water, which caused a pale green film to form on the chromium-rich alloys and thin black scale to form on the nickel-rich alloys. The pellets after sintering were approximately 1/2 in. diam by 3/32 in. thick. The purification train9 was modified by inserting a tube of titanium turnings, heated at 700°C to increase the efficiency of the removal of oxgen and nitrogen. It was found in the earlier work that the sintering treatment lowered the carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen contents of chromium-rich alloys to 0.01, 0.01, and 0.004 wt pct, respectively, and that there was a loss of chromium. In order to ascertain the extent of this loss, the chromium contents of certain alloys were determined chemically. They included those alloys used to determine the parameter-composition curves and those of critical composition, used to determine the chromium-solvus microscopically; these analyses were made on samples after the final heat treatments. Dear Sir: In connection with the official notice of Dr. Raymond's unanimous election by the Directors as Secretary Emeritus, we wish to place upon record certain statements concerning his services to the Institute which we think have not been published., and may not be generally known to the majority of our fellow-members. When the Institute was formed in 1871, Dr. Raymond acted as Secretary of the Founders' Meeting, and became the first Vice-President of the Institute, and, by request of the aged and beloved David Thomas, who was the first President of the Institute, Dr. Raymond discharged all the duties of the office of President, to which he was later formally elected in 1872, and which lip held for three years. During that time, he visited Europe, and through his acquaintance and reputation abroad, established those international relations of the Institute which proved so important in later years. He also enlisted the support of the mining engineers and metallurgists of the Pacific Slope, who would not otherwise have been disposed to join a society originating in the East. And for twelve years he attended; at his own expense, nearly every meeting of the Institute, wherever held, giving to it without remuneration his best service, and sacrificing for it many professional and private interests.

There has been a considerable amount of research developed which shows that the close contour cutting of an excavation prior to removal of the central core will increase ground stability while concommitantly, reducing the number and size of blastholes required to create the excavation. To date, the industrial development of this technique has however, centered on the development of equipment based on simple cutter movement and mechanical rock cutting. The advent of reliable field operable high pressure waterjet cutting equipment with the very low reactive force required to hold the head in position has opened the way for a much smaller and more manueverable system. The advent of small, micro-computers allows the programming of accurate profiles for cutting tools on excavation equipment. The combination of these two technologies will allow the generation of complex as well as simple, excavation profiles and lead to the potential pre-support of the opening before major excavation is completed. A brief description of the necessary components and their functions is encorporated in the initial prototype design as given.

The microseismic method of detecting instability in underground mines was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the early 1940's. ,3 The method relies on the fact that as rock is stressed, strain energy is stored in the rock. Accompanying the buildup of strain energy are small-scale displacement adjustments that release small amounts of seismic and acoustic energy. These small-scale disturbances, which can be detected with the aid of special geophysical equipment, are called micro-seisims or self-gene rated rock noises. It was further determined that as failure of rock is approached, the rate at which rock noises are generated increases. Thus, by monitoring a rock structure at intervals and plotting rock noise rates vs. time, a semi quantitative estimate of the behavior and stability of the structure can be made. Since sufficient use of the microseismic method is still being made by various mining and construction companies, USBM undertook a comprehensive review of the method and a study of the fundamental properties of rock noises. As all prior work on rock noises has been done with resonant-type geophones, which prevented any analysis of their vibration records, it was necessary to develop the instrumentation and field techniques in order that their properties could be investigated, such as their frequency spectrum and absorption characteristics, and to determine if both P and S-waves are generated by a rock noise. The aim of this program is the design of microseismic instrumentation which can be better utilized as an engineering tool than the presently available microseismic equipment. This new design, based on the basic properties of rock noises, should allow better utilization of these phenomena in the study and location of zones of incipient instability in both underground and open-pit mines. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE To study the waveform of rock noises, it was necessary to develop a microseismic system with a broad bandwidth. To achieve high sensitivity and broad frequency response, commercial ceramic accelerometers were used. The present broad-band microseismic system consists of accelerometers as geophones, low-noise preamplifiers, high-gain amplifiers, and an FM magnetic tape recorder. This seven-channel system has a flat frequency response from 20 to 10,000 Hz, a noise level of less than 2.0 kv, and a dynamic range (including manual set attenuation) of greater than 100 db; it can detect signals with acceleration levels as low as 2 ug. The entire system is solid state and hence battery operated and portable (Fig. 1) Analysis procedures consist of playing back the 30-in-per-sec (ips) magnetic tape recordings at 1 7/8 ips to expand the time scale of a recorded rock noise event and then recording this on a high-speed direct-writing oscillograph. The oscilIographic records are then digitized and run through Fourier integral analysis computer programs to determine the frequency spectrum of a rock noise event. The oscillographic records are also examined visually to determine if both P and S-waves can be recognized in a rock noise waveform. Broad-band microseismic recordings have been made at field sites in a wide variety of rock types and in both underground and open-pit mines. Sites include the Kimbley Pit, Ruth, Nev.; the Galena Mine, Wallace, Idaho; the Colony Development Mine. Grand Valley, Colo.; the Cliff Shaft Mine, Ishpeming, Mich; and the White Pine Mine, White Pine, Mich. DATA AND DISCUSSION Analyses of the recorded data have shown that rock noise frequencies are very broad. Fig. 2 and 3 show typical rock noise events and their frequency spectrums. In addition, it is evident from these figures that the wave form of a rock noise is very complex. The wide frequency variation, 50 to 7500 Hz, is due to many variables; the effect of travel distance is the only one examined in this study. The higher frequency components of the wave are rapidly absorbed with distance or increasing travel time. Fig. 4 shows the change in waveform resulting from an additional travel distance of 195 ft. From these data, it is apparent that a resonant-type microseismic geophone cannot respond to all frequencies generated by a rock noise, and in spite of the fact that the tuned geophone is more sensitive at resonance, a geophone with less sensitivity but broader band width is much more effective in detecting rock noises. In addition, a study of broad-band microseismic records shows that both P and S-wave arrivals are easily detected, as shown in Fig. 5. EXTENSIVE investigations in the field of residual strain measurement by X-ray diffraction have been made by Bollenrath, Hauk, and Osswald,1 by Smith and Wood,2'3 by Greenough; by Rosenthal and Norton." and many others. Since X-ray strain measuremeits apply only to those crystals of the test body which are of the proper condition and orientation to diffract and since the residual strains revealed may be accompanied by either body or tex-tural stresses, there has been considerable disagreement among investigators with respect to the validity of conclusions in this field. Although the experi-mentors have employed a variety of loading schemes, surface preparations, and X-ray wave lengths, the observations almost invariably have been made only on the outer surfaces of the specimens. The present note is not to be construed as an exposition of a new method of stress analysis by X-ray strain measurements on sections but as a presentation of some results which point to interesting possibilities for further experiments with sections. The two test rods used in this study were of ingot iron annealed at 910°C. The initial length of the gage section was 2 in. and the diameter was 0.415 in. Cross-sections were cut from the ends of the annealed rods to provide strain-free material. The tensile rod was axially loaded the desired amount in a commercial testing machine. A 1 in. portion of the gage length was cut from the other rod and was subjected to compression in the same machine. Details of this plastic straining of each rod are given in the upper half of Table I. A half-cylinder piece about 1/4 in. long was obtained by making a short longitudinal plane cut containing the axis of the rod near the center of the gage length. From adjacent material a disk about 1/8 in. thick was cut to provide the cross-section specimen. Later another section was cut from this same region with an angle of 30" between the normal to its surface and the axis of the test rod. A cross-section and a longitudinal section were cut from the compression rod in a similar manner. All of these as well as the strain-free cross-sections were mounted in Bakelite and used as specimens for the following X-ray strain measurements. During the course of the study, it became apparent that the condition of the surface of a specimen was a highly critical factor. One of the annealed strain-free specimens as a control was subjected to about 24 hr of polishing with fine alumina, interrupted about every 2 hr for etching with 1 pct nital. Its lattice parameter was determined at intervals from measurements on back-reflection X-ray diffraction patterns, which were calibrated with diffraction from tungsten powder. The parameter gradually approached the value found in the literature for strain-free iron and remained there, within the limits of the experimental error. This determined a long polishing and etching procedure which was adopted for all the specimens and which gave X-ray results from the surfaces believed to be representative of each specimen as a whole. A large number of back-reflection patterns were made with cobalt and chromium radiation, all at normal incidence. Except for some preliminary stationary exposures made to monitor the removal of cold work from the surfaces, each exposure was made with the specimen slowly translating and the film slowly rotating. In appropriate cases a thin layer of a standard metal powder, tungsten with cobalt radiation and silver with chromium, was dusted over a film of vaseline on the surface of the specimen to serve to calibrate the X-ray patterns. The definite trend to stricter specifications with respect to hydraulic concrete has become increasingly manifest in the last six years or so; but it remained for the vast reclamation projects of the Bureau of Reclamation of the Department of the Interior of the last few years to focus attention on this trend, and to demonstrate how thousands of tons of concrete-making aggregates can be produced continuously and automatically with a control of fineness comparable with that obtained with small samples in well equipped private and governmental laboratories. Pioneer work in this direction was done, to be sure, by private companies, notably the Kaiser Paving Co. of San Francisco, prior to the present vast public works program. Then in 1931 came the first great aggregates-preparation plant of the Six Companies, Inc. to supply construction materials for Boulder Darn1 in Nevada, and now, in 1936, the aggregates plant of the Mason-Walsh-Atkinson-Kier Co., general contractors on the Grand Coulee darn in Washington. At Boulder dam and to an even greater degree at Grand Coulee dam, sand production is recognized as probably the most important single element affecting the physical characteristics of the concrete. For in the construction of dams accurate grading of the fine aggregate has considerable bearing on the attainment of a uniform and homogeneous concrete of a high degree of workability and placeability and, at the same time, combining high density and low cement content. Low cement content is of value not only from the standpoint of ceonomy but also because the use of an unnecessarily rich concrete causes certain undesirable characteristics to develop. This paper will relate how at Grand Coulee dam methods that are more advanced than ever before are producing four sizes of gravel and a sand having a fineness modulus of 2.5-3.0. The design capacity is 1000 tons an hour. The data previously reported for the quantity as a function of oxygen pressure at 1550°C have been used to compute the activities of Fe, FeO, Fe2O3, and COO in slags of the ternary system. Activities of the first three have been obtained also for two quasi-ternaries involving fixed CaO:SiO2 ratios. IN a previous paper1' the authors reported the results of an investigation into the effects of oxygen pressure on the composition of various simple slags analogous to some of those which are found in steel-making practice. The ratio of ferric iron to total iron was studied at 1550°C in iron oxide melts to which lime, magnesia, lime-plus-silica, and other oxides were added. The oxygen pressures involved those of air, carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide plus carbon monoxide in several proportions. Although very low oxygen pressures could not be used, the slag-metal equilibrium studies of Fetters and Chip-man' permitted extending the results to slags in equilibrium with iron. For the ternary system CaO-FeO-Fe,O, the oxygen pressure-composition relationship has been determined from zero percent lime to lime saturation over an oxygen pressure range from air to that represented by equilibrium with liquid iron. Lime and silica were added to iron oxide in the ratios 0.54, 1.306, and 2.235 to form three quasi-ternary systems which were also studied over the entire region of liquid melts at 1550°C. Ternary Gibbs-Duhem Equation Wagner" has developed a method by which the activities of two components of a ternary system can be calculated if' the activity of the third component is known throughout the composition range being considered. The fundamental form of the Gibbs-Duhem equation for ternary systems is N, d In a, + N2 d In a, + N3 d In a3 — 0. Wagner has developed a usable form of this equation by introducing the term y = N3/(N3 + N1) and rearranging the equation to give (? In a1/?N2)x = -y/(1-N2)2 (? In a2/?y) x2 N2/1-N2 (? In a2/?N2) y To apply this equation to the slag system CaO-FeO-Fe,O,, the activity of one of these components must be known. However, the only activity which is known from the experimental data is the activity or pressure of oxygen in the gas phase with which the slag is in equilibrium. The activity of oxygen in the slag can be defined as the square root of the oxygen pressure. In order to use oxygen as one component, the composition of the slags must be converted to the basis Fe-O-CaO. Oxygen, exclu-sive of that contained in CaO, then becomes com-ponent 2 in Eq. 1, Fe is selected as 1 and CaO as 3. Then y = Ncao/(Ncao + NFe). Eq. 1 then becomes (? In a fe/? Nx) y = -y/(1-No)2 (? In ao/?y) xp - No/ 1- No (? In ao/ O No) y. In order to evaluate Eq. 2, the boundary conditions must be known. The obvious choice of a standard state for iron is to assign slags in equilibrium with iron an activity of one. Then In a,., or log aFe, which is substituted for convenience, is determined by integrating along a line of constant y from the slag in equilibrium with iron to the composition at which log a,, is to be determined. Mathematically this can be expressed as log aFe (Nlog y) = log a'Fe + (? log a Fe/? No) dNo where the primes indicate equilibrium with liquid iron and a'Fe = 1. Lime-Iron Oxide Slags Iron Activity: The oxygen pressure of lime-iron oxide slags is shown in Fig. 1 as a function of j, de-fined as j = Fe+++/(Fe++ + Fe +++) for various constant mol percentages of lime. Published laboratory data have established that very significant streaming potentials can exist across mud cakes subjected to pressure differentials such as exist between a mud column and formation fluids. Since shale is similar in kind and in properties to a well-formed mud cake, it appeared possible that streaming potentials might also arise across shales. A practical consequence would be that the streaming potential contribution to the SP would be smaller than might otherwise be assumed since the SP is measured with respect to the "shale bare line". The resultant contribution would be the difference between the streaming potential across the shale and that across the mud cake. In order to investigate this possibility, a laboratory apparatus was devised for measuring streaming potentials under pressure conditions normally encountered in wells. Reported data on streaming potentids across mud cakes were verified. More important, appreciable streaming potentials were found across shale samples. As in the case of mud cakes, the shale potentials varied with the concentration and nature of the impregnating electrolyte. Dependence on pressure was In a different rela-tion than that for mud cakes, possibly because of the lower compressibility of shales. The differences in streaming potentials between the shales md mud cakes were generally small, although they might vary considerably in practice depending on the relative electro-kinetic properties of the particular shale-mud cuke combination. A "poorly eflective" shale with a "very eflec-tive mud cake" would produce the largest negative addition to the electrochemical component of the SP. Results of field experiments with pressurized wells were considered in the light of the laboratory results. INTRODUCTION Field experiments wherein the pressure of the mud column in a borehole was varied have often indicated the presence of a streaming potential, but its magnitude was not easily predictable and its sign sometimes changed from one formation to another in the same well.' In the interpretation of SP logs from standard surveys, nevertheless, the correct value of R,, is very frequently obtained, within the limits of field accuracy, using only the simple electrochemical expression of the SP provided that proper corrections are made for bed thickness, ion activity, etc.' Accordingly, it was apparent that the streaming potential component of the SP in a borehole was considerably more complex than commonly assumed and clarification was indeed necessary The close similarity in nature and constitution of a shale to a well-compacted mud cake suggested that a streaming potential might also exist across shales as pointed out by M. P. Tixier in 1953 and as recently emphasized by Wyllie." e practical consequence would be that the streaming potential across the mud cake would be canceled, at least in part, on electrical logs since the SP is recorded with respect to the shale potential as a base line. This appeared to be a plausible explanation for many of the effects observed but no supporting data were available. In 1955 preliminary experiments at low pressures were conducted in our laboratories which supported the hypothesis of the shale streaming potential and formed the basis for later studies at borehole pressures.* EARLY LOW PRESSURE EXPERIMENTS The early experiments were conducted primarily to determine the possibility of a streaming potential across shales. The shale used was a compact type designated as No. 7 from Reagan County, Tex. (Permian). Cut samples were saturated for over one month in .2 to 2.0-N NaCl solutions. The shank, to give good service, should not upset nor should it cause excessive wear on the various parts of the machine. To fulfill these requirements, the steel must have a certain hardness—that is, resistance to deformation. The hardness is expressed in conventional terms, as Brinell or scleroscope number. Before deciding on the hardness that is proper, several factors should be considered; the most important are: type of drill steel used (whether hollow or solid), length of steel, nature of ground, air pressure, and hardness of hammer or anvil block (usually 600 Brinell). These are not all, but they are the most cogent ones. Without doubt, it would be better to use a shank that is too soft than one that is too hard. Most satisfactory service will be obtained from shanks that are just hard enough to resist any tendency to upset. To express the proper hardness in terms of Brinell numbers would mean a great many tests over a long period of time, or a study of drill steels that are being used successfully in the various districts. To obtain some information along this line, the persons making this investigation requested, a number of companies to send to them drill shanks that had been given the usual treatment at that mine. The results of the hardness tests are given in Table 1. The hardness values given in Table 2 are those of shanks known to have been quenched in water and drawn. These results show that where water quenching and drawing are in vogue the hardness is rarely under 400 Brinell.

Most satisfactory service will be obtained from shanks that are just hard enough to resist any tendency to upset. To express the proper hardness in terms of Brinell numbers would mean a great many tests over a long period of time, or a study of drill steels that are being used successfully in the various districts. To obtain some information along this line, the persons making this investigation requested, a number of companies to send to them drill shanks that had been given the usual treatment at that mine. The results of the hardness tests are given in Table 1. The hardness values given in Table 2 are those of shanks known to have been quenched in water and drawn. These results show that where water quenching and drawing are in vogue the hardness is rarely under 400 Brinell.

IN the fall of 1910, the Nevada Petroleum Co., operating in the Coalinga field in California, determined to drill a number of wells with rotary tools, in order to prove conclusively the relative value of the rotary as compared with the standard rig. At that time, the rotary was but little known in California and its proposed introduction met with considerable criticism on the part of the operators and quiet opposition among the standard drilling crews. There were few men available who were competent to handle a rotary outfit, and these few had had but little experience in California fields. Machines as then built were much inferior to those now used, being lighter in construction and of a poorer quality of material. The shells encountered at depths between 1,700 and 2,000 ft. seemed to be too hard to permit of successful drilling, and at these depths the rig was changed over to standard tools and by them completed. Because of the heavy depreciation, the time lost in converting from rotary to standard, and the comparatively small profit, it was concluded that unless in the future there was some material improvement in rotary rigs, nothing would be gained by drilling with rotary tools upon this property. Little or no drilling has been done upon the property since that time, but in the meantime a large number of men have been trained in the use of the rotary; in fact, many standard-tool men have abandoned standard drilling and, starting in as roustabouts, have become thoroughly competent rotary operators. The improvements in the machinery have been such as to remove many of the objections and the rotary drilling of to-day is in every way superior to that of 1910. In contrast, a well drilled recently by the Kern Trading & Oil Co., in the east side Coalinga field may be cited. The first 2,500 ft. was drilled in 24 days and it is confidently expected that the water string will be set with a rotary at 3,400 ft.-a record obviously far beyond that made in 1910 by the Nevada Petroleum Co.

The critical shortage of asbestos fiber in the world today brings to the foreground the question of locating and developing new deposits. The object of this paper is to discuss some of the more important factors which should be considered in the examination and valuation of a new asbestos enterprise. Some of the more important uses of asbestos fiber are for textiles, heat insulators, building materials, filters and a series of other uses. The properties of this mineral, such as fibrous structure, color, strength, silkiness and flexibility, coupled with resistance to fire, certain chemical action and decay make its application unique for certain industrial uses which consume over 500,000 tons annually. These same unique properties which make this mineral so valuable also make a deposit one of the most difficult to appraise accurately, because of the many undeterminable and varying factors which must be considered before a deposit can properly be termed commercial. The majority of the asbestos fiber today, having the above mentioned properties, is sold by grades which are based on fiber length. Present day fiber prices vary over a wide range from $800 to $225 for crude fibers and $300 to $20.00 per ton for milled grades. For valuation purposes a careful study should be made of existing fiber prices and markets. Examination of Deposits In carrying out prospecting and examination of a deposit, considerable caution is required to get the necessary information in the form that will have the most value for the final determination. There are two main classes of asbestos fibers, chrysotile and the amphiboles, the chrysotile being, by far, the most important both in abundance and uses. This paper will stress mainly chrysotile deposits, however, the amphiboles have many important uses, especially amosite and crocidalite. Their valuation presents special problems as other factors may be involved, especially as they are not graded according to any well defined and adopted standard but usually according to the use for which they are being supplied. Most chrysotile deposits occur in two main types of rock, (I) mainly in basic igneous, such as dunite and peridotite, (2) to a lesser extent in sedimentary rocks, such as dolomite and limestone. All of these require a certain degree of metamorphism to be favorable to asbestos formation. Approximately 90 pct of the asbestos deposits are derived from serpentinization of dunite or peridotite, whereby the magnesium-silicate olivine was altered to hydrous magnesium-silicate serpentine. Under certain favorable geological conditions, this serpentine takes a fibrous form having a definite crystal structure, probably due to molecular rearrangement, and is known as chrysotile. Banding that occurred in plates rolled from the early production heats of 18Ni(250) maraging steel is described and related to the segvegation of certain alloying elements (nickel, molybdenum, titanium), the extent of which was quantitatively evaluated by means of electron-microprobe analysis. The effect of banding on mechanical properties is discussed, with particular reference to observed directional differences in plane-strain fracture toughness of plates. It is shown that banding originates as interdendritic segvegation during ingot solidification and persists in some degree through normal soaking and hot reduction to plate. The results of the study showed that heating sections of small laboratory-cast ingots at 2200°F for 4 hr was sufficient to markedly reduce microsegregation and to considerably improve mechanical properties. Hot rolling of 7-in.-thick ingot sections to 1/2-in.-thick plate effected a similar reduction of microsegregation, but resulted in even greater increases in ductility and toughness than that obtained by homogenization treatment alone. DURING the past few years, considerable attention has been directed towards the low-carbon, high-alloy maraging steels and in particular towards the 18Ni-8Co-5Mo-0.4Ti alloy. The steels of this group, having an excellent combination of high strength and toughness, have a number of advantages over their more conventional medium-carbon low-alloy, quenched-and-tempered counterparts. In the annealed condition, the maraging steels are in the form of a ductile marten-site; aging at a relatively low temperature, typically 900°F for 3 hr, increases greatly the strength through the precipitation of intermetallic compounds. One problem in the early production heats of maraging steel was that the finished plate frequently displayed a banded structure. Previous work on other steels1-' had established that banding in wrought products is either a direct or an indirect consequence of chemical segregation, which occurs during solidification and persists to some extent through normal thermal and mechanical treatments. For example, Smith and others: in a study of low-alloy steel, were able to correlate the severity of banding in the wrought product with the degree of interdendritic segregation of nickel and chromium in the as-cast ingot. The effect of banding on the mechanical properties of steels is usually considered to be detrimental, although there is only limited evidence to suggest that a marked improvement in properties can be obtained with less heterogeneous structures. Comparison of the longitudinal and transverse tensile properties of banded and of homogenized 4340 steel showed that only the transverse ductility was improved by homogenization, but even then the improvement was not commercially significant.' Conversely, homogenization of through-the-thickness tension specimens of quenched-and-tempered steel plate, containing 1.47 pct Mn, increased the strength by as much as 10 pct and the tensile ductility by at least a factor of twos5 This improvement was related to the elimination of manganese-rich bands, which also are one of the factors responsible for cold cracking in the heat-affected zone of metal-arc welds.7 In the present study the nature and severity of banding in early commercial 18Ni(250) maraging steel plate and in laboratory-melted 18Ni(250) maraging steel plate was determined. The effects of banding on plane-strain fracture toughness and the effects of thermal homogenization treatments on the strength, tensile ductility, and toughness of 18Ni(250) maraging-steel as-cast ingots and rolled plate were evaluated. In addition, the effects of hot deformation by rolling on the mechanical properties of ingots were determined. 1) STUDIES OF BANDING IN EARLY PRODUCTION PLATE The chemical composition of the steel (A) used in this part of the investigation is shown in Table I. Banding was not clearly evident in either as-rolled or annealed* plate, but annealed and agedc** plate had a banded structure. The typical banded condition, Fig. 1, consists of layers of unetched austenite (white) and dark-etching martensite in a light-etching martensitic matrix. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that this steel contained more than 6 pct austenite. An electron-probe X-ray microanalyzer (using a focused beam of electrons) was used to determine the composition of the bands and of the material between the bands with respect to the main alloying elements— nickel, molybdenum, titanium, and cobalt. The recorded X-ray intensities were converted to concentration values with the use of a standard of similar composition. To facilitate probe positioning, all analyses were conducted on specimens that had been given a light etch. The influence of this etching on the analytical results was negligible; analyses made on the identical area before and after etching yielded essentially the same concentration values. The results of the electron-microprobe analyses at selected points revealed that the layers of austenite and adjacent dark-etching martensite contained greater amounts of nickel, molybdenum, and titanium than did the surrounding matrix, Table 11.
