Aspen, the flourishing mountain- and mining-town of Pitkin county, Colorado, is located in the valley of the Roaring Fork, 11 miles above Glenwood springs, where that stream empties its waters into Grand river, a tributary of the Colorado. The Roaring Fork heads on the western slope of the Sawatch range near Grizzly peak, and runs in a general northwesterly direction to its junction with the Grand river. Of its numerous tributaries, Castle creek joins it just below the town of Aspen, the town being built on an extensive flat hounded on the northeast by the Roaring Fork and on the west by Castle creek. The latter heads at the junction of the Sawatch and the Elk mountains and flows northward between the two chains, until it empties into Roaring Fork. Opposite the town of Aspen, Hunter creek, coming westward from the western slope of Mount Massive, joins the Roaring Fork. About a mile north of Aspen, the bed of Hunter creek is at least 300 feet higher than that of the Roaring Fork at Aspen. Hunter creek forms thus, at its mouth, one of the best water-powers in Colorado. A portion of it is now utilized for electric lighting in Aspen, while in the near future, the whole of this magnificent natural power will be applied, through electric transmission, for hoisting, pumping and ventilating at different mines of the district. The mountain opposite the town of Aspen, on the east side of Hunter creek (which near its mouth flows southerly), is called Smuggler mountain, from the famous mine at the foot of it. On the other, or western, side of Hunter's creek (see map, Fig. I), a higher mountain rises, on the slope of which the regular dip of the Triassie or Upper Carboniferous red sandstone strata, alternating with white layers of the same rock, can be clearly seen from town. THE meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Sept. 12 to 15, inclusive, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Institute. It was at Wilkes-Barre, in 1871, that the foundation was laid for the great institution that now includes in its roster the greatest names. in mining engineering in every civilized country of the world. The founders of the Institute, with rare prescience, established a common ground upon which all mining engineers, whatever particular branch they might consider most pertinent, could stand securely, assured of a deep-seated interest from their brethren similarly minded in other localities. So wise and clear was the vision of the founders that every engineer connected with mining has found it beneficial, not to say indispensable, to maintain his connection with the Institute and to increase his technical enthusiasm through the medium of the valuable technical publications. The little coterie of 1871 has grown to a strong body of more than 10,000 members in 1921, reflecting the glory of the founders in the record of the accomplishments written on the pages of the fifty years of the

ALTHOUGH the mechanical properties of high-carbon manganese-iron alloys, particularly the Hadfield manganese steels, have been established, the literature discloses discrepancies in the reported properties for the low-carbon alloys. Hadfieldlo summarized the existing data up to 1927, including the investigations of Guillet, Arnold, Strauss, Burgess and Aston, and reported his own values for alloys containing for the most part from 0.06 to 0.15 per cent carbon. He noted: From these comparisons it will be seen that while there is a broad and general agreement as to the character of the alloys at the different manganese percentages, there are disparities in individual cases, especially as regards the degree of toughness or brittleness displayed by an alloy with certain percentages and with particular types of treatment. These differences are not always readily explainable. Ib His data showed that alloys containing 4 to 10 per cent manganese water-quenched from 1000°C. were brittle and hard with maximum brittleness at about 7 per cent. Slight improvement in ductility was obtained with compositions from 10 to 17 per cent manganese. Alloys containing up to 17 per cent manganese slowly cooled rather than quenched from 870°C., he found, were slightly improved in ductility with significant improvement in alloys analyzing 4.1 and 4.8 per cent manganese. Recently Walters, Kramer and Loringa reported mechanical properties for alloys made up from electrolytic manganese and ingot iron and containing from 0.02 to 0.04 per cent carbon. They showed that a tempering treatment at 540°C. (1000°F.) for one hour significantly improved the ductility of compositions ranging from 6.7 to 20.7 per cent manganese. The differences of these compared with Hadfield&apos;s results they considered to originate in this tempering treatment plus the fact that Hadfield&apos;s alloys contained higher carbon and phosphorus (0.06 to 0.15 per cent C; 0.06 to 0.07 per cent P compared with 0.02 to 0.04 per cent C, <0.001 per cent P). In this paper it is shown that of the low- carbon alloys (0.02 to 0.03 per cent) containing from 3.3 to 21.5 per cent manganese moderately or rapidly quenched from 1000°C. some are brittle or ductile, depending on presence or absence of hydrogen. Hydrogen is readily absorbed at high temperatures, and much of it is retained when the alloys are cooled to room temperature. The presence of hydrogen in the range of composition from 10 to 18 per cent manganese is a major factor in determining relative ductility. At 22 per cent manganese, and also at compositions below 10 per cent manganese, factors other than or in addition to hydrogen play a role. These are discussed. Also data are presented to show that hydrogen absorbed by the high-carbon alloys of Hadfield composition is without effect on their mechanical properties.

B. F. TiLLson*— The manifold difficulties of accurate anemometry in irregular sections of mine passageways, the irregular distributions of velocities in cross sections of the same, and the disturbing influence of the observer upon the air flow, all indicate an undesirable inaccuracy of results obtainable by any standardized method of traversing the section by an anemometer. It seems obvious that another, and simpler, method should be used to determine the volume of air flow in mine passages, namely: 1. At appropriate locations cement or calked framework rings should be installed permanently to equalize the irregularities of sectional contour and provide a place and means of attachment for a temporary cloth brattice which bears a rigid orifice. 2. The measurement of the velocity of air flow through the orifice may then be by anemometer or, preferably, by Pitot tube measurements of the differential pressures on both sides of the orifice in accordance with the standard practices available in engineering 1iterature. † The constants may be determined for various measuring positions in relation to the resulting "vena contracta." 3. The position of the person who makes the measurements is behind the brattice out of the air stream. The Pitot tube does not offer as disturbing an obstruction as the anemometer. A recording gauge may be employed to integrate fluctuations in air flow through that portion of the mine. No traverses are required because the reading may be at a single central point. An anemometer can be used with an orifice flow. The orifice will increase the air velocity at the measuring point, with correspondingly more accurate measurements where the normal air velocity through the passageway is low. Portable brattices might be devised with the cushioning rims which would seal against irregular rock surfaces where permanent rings were not available or feasible. The development by the Ventilation Committee of standard procedures and devices for the orifice measurement of the flow of mine ventilating air might be a desirable project for this coming year. C. M. Smith (author&apos;s reply)—Thank you for your discussion of my paper on underground anemometry. Your suggested method of measuring underground air flow is a novel one which might be applicable in some situations. It should be tested along with other suggested methods in any investigation of this subject. G. E. McElroy*—In spite of the adverse publicity that vane-anemometer methods of air measurement have had in the past and that contributed by the present paper, I endorse Mr. Erickovic&apos;s statement that anemometer traversing "has proved to be widely applicable, expeditious and simple" and add that available methods are accurate enough for the purposes for which they may be used. The fact that the great majority of minor mine officials assess relative changes in rates of air flow by comparison of crude vane-anemometer measurements, known to average 20 to 30 pct high, has no important bearing on this subject, because state inspection standards were based originally on such methods of air measurement. Federal inspection standards are based on actual rates of flow as determined by traversing, and interest in traversing methods is rapidly increasing. In considering traversing methods, three aspects are of major importance: (1) the absolute accuracy of calibrations; (2) the degree of interference with normal flow conditions introduced by traversing methods designed for accurate measurement by shaft-mounted instruments; and (3) the proper "method" factor to use for approximate measurements by hand-held instruments. With respect to absolute accuracy of calibrations, we have always placed reliance on calibrations made by the National Bureau of Standards, with which manufacturers&apos; calibrations have usually agreed very closely. It is therefore particularly disturbing to find7 that calibrations made previous to June 1947 are presumably about 5 pct in error because of excessive registry caused by the thin flat plates on which anemometers were mounted for calibration. Velocities corrected for calibration have therefore averaged about 5 pct low in all probability. In this connection, it is interesting to note that an anemometer calibrated against Pitot-tube measurement by a single-point method in the Bureau of Mines experimental coal nine in 1923 indicated this same difference of about 5 pct and that the same instrument calibrated by a traversing method in a metal mine some months later indicated a difference in the same direction of about 4 pct. These results are reported by the Bureau of Mines.8 Regarding the degree of interference, or changes in velocity distribution, caused by the position of the observer&apos;s body in traversing operations, misconceptions seem to be especially prevalent, resulting in increasing advocacy of methods, such as the "clear section" method outlined in this paper, that cause just the type of interferences that they are designed to avoid. The degree of interference for any method may be gauged easily by a few experiments with a velocity-pressure gauge connected to a Pitot tube or with an indicating velocity meter such as the Velometer. In an experiment cited by McElroy and Richardson,# a decrease of 5 pct was noted at ten widths upstream from a 6-in. plank, whereas an observer&apos;s body at about the maximum practical distance of 6 ft downstream from the instrument is only about four widths away. In the Bureau of Standards paper previously mentioned, it is recommended that supports used in calibrations be at least 16 widths downstream. In practice, therefore, a downstream position of the observer is ruled out as far as accurate measurement is concerned. Operation of the anemometer by rigid shaft support from a point outside the section is seldom practicable; however, accurate results can be obtained, with the anemometer rigidly attached to a short shaft and held at arm&apos;s length, by an observer advancing across the traversed section while he faces the opposite wall and stands sideways to the current, provided that he keeps the instrument at least 3 ft away from his body at all times and traverses the entire section with it. If the traverse can be started with the observer in a side recess, the entire section can be covered in one operation. Normally, it would be covered in two half-sections. The presence of the observer&apos;s body does not, as is commonly supposed, increase the average velocity throughout the remaining part of the section. Rather, the velocities 1 to 2 ft on either side of his body are increased, but the distribution of velocities throughout the rest of the cross section remains normal, and a traverse made as stated gives a true average velocity for normal-flow conditions. Regarding the proper "method" factor for accounting for interference in the approximate methods of traversing with hand-held instruments, here again confusion prevails, for which the writer must assume some of the blame. This chapter is a partial summary of an investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) made in response to a recent request by the Assistant Secretary, Water and Power Development of the U.S. Department of the Interior, for a comprehensive review of horizontal boring technology related to underground power-line installation. This review is concerned primarily with 3 to 36-in. diam horizontal holes from several hundred to several thousand feet in length. An electric power system consists of three essential functions: generation, transmission, and distribution. The generation component includes the generating station and step-up substation; the transmission component includes the transmission line and stepdown substation at typical voltage levels ranging from 69 to 345 kv for underground lines and 69 to 500 kv for overhead transmission lines; the distribution component includes the distribution line carrying the commonly used voltages of 120, 208, and 240 v, the distribution transformer, and the line to the service customer.l The Federal Power Commission reports that 1600 miles of underground transmission lines of 60 to 345-kv capacity are now in service in the United States. By 1980, it is estimated that approximately 3000 miles of trans- mission lines will have to be placed underground.2 The cost of burying electric transmission lines underground in metropolitan areas, approximately 30 miles from the center of each of the most populated cities, will exceed $1.5 billion with the methods now available. The wide spread in unit costs of overhead and underground transmission lines narrows as right-of-way costs for overhead transmission in congested areas increase. Improved methods of underground emplacement will certainly reduce this difference in costs and even further favor underground emplacement. Also, in the future, overhead transmission lines will probably not be permitted in highly built-up areas.

It is almost exactly seven years since the last previous meeting of the Institute in this city. In a paper on " Pittsburgh, its Resources and Sorroundings," read at that meeting, I showed that Allegheny County had produced in 1878, " one-twelfth of all the pig-iron,.... two-ninths of all the rolled iron (except rails), over one-eighth of all the Bessemer and open-hearth steel, two-thirds of all the crucible blister and puddled steel, one-fourth of all the glass, one-eighth of all the coal, and one-sixth of all the pig-lead produced in the United States;" and the object of this paper is to show that, great as the record then was, it has been greatly surpassed since.* Population. In my former paper I expressed the opinion that the census of 1880 would show the population of Allegheny County to be in excess of 300,000. The census report made it 355,869. THE {120}(001) texture has been reported in near 50 pct Ni-Fe alloys <0.004 in. thick1,2 and in copper 0.014 in. thick.3 This texture is one of two types of secondary recrystallization textures observed to replace a cube texture matrix and is desirable in Fe-Ni alloys because of its unique magnetic characteristics.1,2 However, the conditions for and mechanism of the {120}(001) formation are not well understood.3 During an investigation of the influence of alloying elements on the magnetic characteristics of 49 pct Ni-Fe alloys with a sheet thickness of 0.014 in., we have observed the growth of {120}(001) secondaries when strong deoxidizers such as aluminum and calcium were present. It is believed that this observation in unique and provides additional insight with regard to the mechanism for {120}(001) texture formation. Three alloys were prepared with electrolytic iron and nickel and contained a nominal 49 wt pct Ni. Alloy A was a straight binary Fe-Ni alloy, whereas intentional additions of 0.013 wt pct Ca to alloy B and of 0.59 wt pct A1 to alloy C were made. Ingots were forged at 1100 C, hot-rolled to 0.150 in. gage, pickled, and cold-rolled to 0.014 in. Standard U-shaped magnetic test specimens were punched, deburred, sprayed with MgO, and annealed in ~50°C dew point hydrogen. Textures were identified with the aid of etch pits, the

A method is presented for determining minimum waiting-on-cement time, which takes into account the differences that exist between types and brands of cements and such individual well conditions as depth, temperature, and pressure. The basis for the method was determined by laboratory tests. Being a laboratory development, several steps were required to prove its merit. The first step consisted of laboratory tests designed to determine the minimum cement strength required in wells. Basis was found for setting a minimum value of 8 Ib. per sq. in. tensile strength. Next, it was shown by laboratory tests that the time to 8 Ib. per sq. in. tensile strength may be expressed as a function of consistometer stirring time to loo "poises," the approximate relation being "the time to 8 Ib. per sq. in. tensile strength equals the time to I00 &apos;poises&apos; times three." Next, it was shown that the time of maximum temperature development in cement slurries, due to heat of hydration, is also related to consistometer stirring time to loo poises, but only by a factor of approximately two. It was shown also that the shut-in casing pressure will build up after cement is placed and register a maximum pressure at approximately the same time the slurry down the hole attains maximum temperature. From this and the relationships listed above, the general rule was established that minimum waiting-on-cement time (time to 8 Ib. per sq. in.) after casing cement jobs in any well is equal to the time when the shut-in casing pressure reaches a maximum, as measured from the initial mixing of cement, times a factor of 1.5. Cement plugs drilled in the field at the time prescribed by this formula were found to drill "firm to hard," thus confirming the laboratory tests. These tests prove that many of the present regulations for waiting on cement require a longer time than is absolutely necessary. Use of the method herein proposed offers the possibility of a saving of $1200 per well. Introduction The length of time allowed for cement to set after casing is determined either by state-wide rules, field rules, or self-imposed rules written into drilling contracts. In general, the time is dictated by experience and common practice. However, owing to differences in opinion and in experience of the various groups involved, waiting-on-cement time often varies from one area to the next. For example, an operator in an area where no rules exist may drill out of surface pipe at 24 to 36 hr., while another operator in another area may wait 48 hr. or more to comply with state or field rules, although the depth of the well, hole size, type of cement, and other data are identical. An even greater difference in practices will be found by making similar comparisons with respect to oil-string cement jobs. Differences in waiting-on-cement times of 36 to 48 hr. are common. Further complicating the picture is the rather common practice of allowing more waiting time for cement to set at the greater depths than is allowed at the shallow depths. Officials of the State Department have expressed their hope that a considerable number of technical men will take the examination for consular service. The Department recognizes that the interest of the United States will be served best if technical men are made available through these examinations for vacancies at points where their training will be of special value. Industrial engineers who have passed the con-sular examination will be assigned to industrial centers of Europe or South America. Mining engineers, chemists, electrical engineers, etc., will be assigned to industrial centers requiring special training.

DURING an investigation in which the solubility relations of the phases in Muntz metal (60 per cent. copper, 40 per cent. zinc) were under study, certain phenomena that had no immediate connection with the main problem were observed, which were thought sufficiently interesting to study further. Because of lack of time, only a preliminary survey was made of two of these; namely, the cleavage structure developed under certain conditions in a 60:40 brass and abnormal grain growth in this alloy. CLEAVAGE STRUCTURE IN HEAT-TREATED MUNTZ METAL Carpenter noted many years ago that cold-working a brass of the Muntz metal type, which had been quenched previously from within the beta field, results in a partial breakdown of the supersaturated beta solution and the precipitation of the solute (the alpha solution) in the cleavage planes of the beta grains. This manner of rejection of a solute from a metastable solid solution is not peculiar to this particular alloy, for among others, it occurs in the cold-working of certain austenitic steels; for example, the austenitic nickel steels. In these ferrous alloys, cold deformation produces a partial decomposition of the austenite, with the formation of martensitic "needles" and zigzags in the austenitic poly-hedra. It is interesting to note that while the two solid solutions-austenite and quenched Muntz metal- are metastable and in their mode of decomposition behave quite alike when deformed in the cold, the metastability of each results from a different cause; viz., that of the austenite from the fact that it is a supercooled solution (its solvent, gamma iron, at ordinary temperatures is below its normal stable range) whereas the metastability of the quenched Muntz metal is the result of supersaturation.

THE Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district covers an area of some 2000 sq ml located in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, the north-western corner of Illinois and a portion of eastern Iowa around the city of Dubuque. Commercial deposits of lead and zinc have been mined in Iowa but the major discoveries during the past eight years have been made in Jo Daviess County, Ill, and LaFayette County, Wis. THERE are at least two effects of temperature on the stress required to produce plastic flow. 1) Metals plastically strained for the same amount at different temperatures possess different stress-strain curves and different internal structures (e.g., nature and density of imperfections). 2) There is both experimental and theoretical evidence that the stress necessary to produce plastic flow may vary with temperature even though the internal structure remains constant.1-5 Much of the data in the literature is difficult to interpret because these two effects are simultaneously present. In the work reported here, they are considered separately. Standard 0.505 in. tensile specimens were prepared from high-purity Mond nickel and OFHC copper. Nickel specimens were annealed in hydrogen at 1150°C for 30 min and furnace cooled. This produced an average grain diameter of 1.4 mm. Copper specimens were annealed in vacuum at 525°C for 6 hr and furnace cooled. This produced an average grain diameter of 0.11 mm. Nickel tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at 500°K, whereas copper tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at room temperature. All specimens were cooled to 74°K and heated to room temperature. After these treatments all of the tensile specimens of a given set possessed identical structures. All specimens were returned to the tensile machine and tested at various temperatures and constant cross-head speed. Many of the tensile curves showed well defined yields but, in order to minimize personal judgment, the yield was always chosen as the stress corresponding to 0.2 pct plastic deformation. Results are summarized in the graph of yield vs temperature of test, Fig. 1. All of the specimens corresponding to any one line have had identical treatments and, therefore, have identical internal structures. Thus, each line gives the relation between yield stress and temperature for one constant internal structure. The lowest line, which is for annealed nickel, shows no measurable variation of yield with temperature. This is similar to Blewitt&apos;s6 results on copper single crystals, but a variation in yield with temperature was found by Andrade and Henderson&apos; in single crystals of nickel, and by Car-recker and Hibbard8 in annealed polycrystalline copper. The three other lines, which are for prestrained materials, show that there is a linear relation between yield stress and temperature when the internal structure remains constant. Such a relation might be expected from a rate equation such as that of Kauzmannl on the assump- tion that the activation energy is either independent of or linear with temperature. These results would also be expected if the shear moduli of copper and nickel are linear functions of temperature for, as Cottrell and Stokes have pointed out," in all dislocation theories of strength the flow stress appears proportional to the shear modulus of the material. In copper and nickel, since the modulus of elasticity decreases roughly linearly with increase in temperature," it is probable that the modulus of shear also decreases approximately linearly with increasing temperature. A detailed discussion of the effect of these and other factors on the temperature dependence of flow stress in face-centered-cubic metals has recently been given by Seeger.4

The early Spanish adventurers found but little gold or silver on the American mainland, and the aborigines in the country that is now the United States were not as submissive as those of the West Indies, so the conquistadores obtained no foothold north of the Caribbean sea. Their later exploration north- ward had Mexico as a base-and wild yarns as a basis. The friar Marcos, a member of Estevanico&apos;s unfortunate expedition, brought the story of the Seven Cities of Cibola to Mexico City in 1539. Except as Indian hovels,* they existed only in a disordered imagination, but when Váquez de Coronado&apos;s expedition pricked the glittering bubble, there appeared an enticing mirage in the northern desert: the glorious land of Quivira, where even-the common pitchers and bowls were made of solid gold. Coronado proceeded northward and found only enormous herds of buffalo on the plains of Texas. It was a melancholy land. No gold or silver was to be seen among the poor Indians. Coronado reached the country of the Wichitas, in Kansas, before he abandoned his quest and turned home, which he reached, with only a third of his party, hungry and tattered, in 1542. So long as greed stimulates the imagination there will be no lack of tales such as those that repeatedly led the Spaniards to the rainbow&apos;s end. In 1860 an expedition was organized in San Francisco by Dr. Darwin French to explore the desert country near Owens lake on the news that the Indians in those parts shot golden bu1lets.t The fact that the savages were known to possess few guns did not discredit the tale, which

IN this paper it is proposed to follow the developments in the design of the lead blast furnace at Port Pirie from the time The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. assumed control in 1915 to the present time, with special reference to the development of the system using two superimposed rows of tuyeres as is now in operation. Lead smelting operations first commenced in 1889, when the British Broken Hill Pty. Ltd. started its first furnace. This was followed by installing two more furnaces during the same year and another the following year. In 1892, Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. acquired the smelting works and combined operations with those at Broken Hill, New South Wales; by 1897, the whole of the smelting operations had been transferred to Port Pirie and thirteen blast furnaces were built to treat the Broken Hill ore production. In 1915, The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. took over from the Broken Hill Proprietary and have carried out operations since that time. From its inception, the present company started on a long range program of reconstruction, in which the development of the lead blast furnace has played a prominent part. A definite trend in plant development has been towards the simplification of plant control by a reduction in the number of operating units. The great advantages of technical control which resulted from the very simplified flowsheet established in the continuous refining process stimulated the desire to extend the principle to the smelting operation. Thus in the sequence of furnaces described here, it will be noted that the trend has been towards larger and, of course, fewer units. With each such development it is significant that the operating conditions and metallurgical results have shown steady improvement. Standard Furnace In 1920 there were seven furnaces operating, five of a type subsequently called the standard furnace and two of the original thirteen smaller furnaces, the latter type being used for the treatment of drosses, etc. produced from the refinery section, while the standard type carried out the main, lead-smelting operations. The standard furnace (figs. 1 and 2) had the dimensions given in table I.

It was recently shown with 3.3 pct Si-Fe containing 0.026 pct S and 0.06 pct Mn that the extent of secondary recrystallization to a cube-on-edge texture is determined by the cooling rate from the solution temperature of the manganese sulfide inclusions.1 With a rapid cooling rate, many small inclusions rather than a few large ones are formed, which leads to increased restraint to normal grain growth and more complete secondary recrystalliza-tion. (Pittsburg Meeting. March, 1010.) GENERALLY speaking, the practical study of combustion has been made mainly from the stand-point of the steam engineer. This. narrow view-point has left open a large field for scientific research on the application of combustion in other arts, where the conditions of heat-utilization are widely different from those presented in the steam-generator. The great economic importance of the boiler and the ease of measuring its performance, together with the comparative uniformity of conditions in the steam-generator, is, probably, quite largely responsible for the practical neglect of the study of the use of fuels in other arts save only on the basis of their thermal value. Yet these other arts show quite plainly that a thermal-value basis alone is Dot sufficient. For example, in burning lime, under ordinary conditions of firing, a cord of wood will do as much work as a ton of coal, though the latter affords more than twice the number of heat-units. Similar results are evidenced in burning brick, in the roasting of certain ores, in reheating billets, and in many other arts where heat is to be applied over extended areas to fragmental masses of more or less refractory materials. In these arts much is to be gained by a careful study of the application of the heating-agent in the form of the long flame, and in the production of the heat in contact with, or in direct proximity to, the object to be heated. Of necessity, in boiler-practice, combustion cannot be maintained in actual contact with, or in close proximity to, the object to be heated. Speaking in a general way, heat is imparted from burning bodies to things to be heated in two ways : directly, by radiation, and indirectly, by transfer of the sensible heat of hot gases by convection or contact; by conduction from the hot uses.
