Although the season cracking of brass has been a subject of experimental investigation for more than thirty years, the mechanism that is responsible for this phenomenon is still obscure. While at- tempts to elucidate the stress-corrosion cracking of some alloys have been relatively successful, the principal accomplishments made in the studies of the season cracking of brass have consisted of improved techniques for the fabrication of articles of alpha brass, which reduce the danger of season-cracking failure in service. The primary purpose of the present paper is to collect the published experimental data which appear to be of importance to the development of an adequate theory of the mechanism of the season cracking of brass. Some of the possible mechanisms which have been proposed will also be discussed, together with some promising avenues of future attack on the problems. Several excellent survey papers on season cracking are available, including the recent ones by Croft and Sachs(1)2 and by Gibbs(2). The principal facts concerning season cracking, as presented in these papers, may be summarized as follows. The authors of the paper above mentioned have sent the following statement to correct erroneous com-ments and implications in their article with the re-quest that it be published: "In the above mentioned article the reference to Bendelari jigs is used in the generic sense as applying to the mechanically driven diaphragm jigs. No attempt was made to dif-ferentiate between the various machines as installed on different dredges. The Natomas Company use a jig of their own manufacture. The Yuba Company installed the Placer jig as manufactured by the Pan American Engineer-ing Company. "The Pan American Engineering Company also manufactures the Crangle jig under their own name. This is a diaphragm jig in which the pulsations are produced by intermittent flow of water through the patent Crangle Valve and it has no driving mechanism."

Continuous seven- and nine teen -filament close-packed silver-steel filamentary composites mere tested in tension. For purposes of comparison, the tensile behavior of the composite was predicted from the measured properties of the individual com-ponents. It was assumed that the axial strain is the same in both components and that the contribution of each component to the composite flow stress is proportional to its volume fraction. Good agreetnent was obtained between the observed and predicted tensile behavior. However, the composite elongation at fracture was about twice that observed when the individual steel wires were tested alone. Composites in which the filaments were widely spaced failed by the consecutive fracture of the filaments. In composites with closely spaced filaments, a composite instability preceded frachcre. These effects are explained in terms of a lateral restraint to the necking of the filaments which develops in the deforming composite. TWO-COMPONENT or composite materials are increasingly being developed and used as structural materials. Of all the composite geometries used, the filamentary configuration has proved to be the most successful. Polymer-bonded fiber-glas, the most common of the filamentary composites, has been investigated most extensively to date. One explanation of the behavior of fiberglas1 suggests that the load transfer between the glass fibers and the polymer matrix occurs primarily through friction. Bond separation between the fibers and the matrix is presumed to occur at very low stresses. Subsequently, only frictional bonding can provide for the transfer of load from the matrix to the fibers. The force normal to the fiber-matrix interface which gives rise to this friction is assumed to arise from the matrix shrinkage which occurs during solidification. The behavior of metallic filamentary-composite materials would be expected to differ from that of fiberglas in several significant aspects. Residual stresses resulting from differences in thermal contraction can be kept to a minimum by proper heat treatment. A strong wetted bond is formed between the two phases. In brazed joints,2 for example, the interphase bond is sufficiently strong that the weaker material will fail before separation occurs at the interface. Most metal filaments can undergo appreciable amounts of plastic deformation before failure. Failure by plastic instability or necking frequently occurs in metallic filaments, but not in glass fibers tested at room temperature. Differences between the behavior of fiberglas-polymer and metallic filamentary composites have indeed been observed in composites containing various types of metallic filaments in a silver matrix.3,4 At strains of the order of 10-2 pct, all the deformation was accommodated by the silver matrix. Hence, the strength of the composite depended only on the fiber concentration and not on the nature of the fiber. At higher strains, the strength of the composite increased when filaments with higher work-hardening rates were used. Surface slip line observations on a silver-mild steel composite that had been stretched 4 pct showed that an appreciable amount of deformation occurred in the filaments. Work on tungsten-copper filamentary composites5 has shown that the ultimate tensile strength for varying filament fractions followed a linear mixture rule. Assuming that the axial strains in both filaments and the matrix are equal, this linear mixture rule can be expressed as: The subscripts c, f, and m refer to the composite, filaments, and matrix, respectively. A and V are the area and volume fractions of each component. sc and of are the ultimate tensile strengths of the composite and the filaments. sm is the flow stress of matrix at a strain equal to the elongation at failure of the filaments. However, the tungsten filaments can undergo only a limited elongation before they fracture without an appreciable reduction in area. A composite containing more ductile filaments might indeed deviate from this linear mixture rule for the ultimate tensile strength, since filament failure by necking might be arrested by the matrix. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Specimens were prepared from 0.8 pct carbon steel piano wires of 0.015 in. initial diameter. The mining fraternity of North America was grieved and shocked to learn of the death of Dr. Willet G. Miller on Feb. 10, 1925. Doctor Miller was for many years the Provincial Geologist of Ontario and the one who more than any other had contributed by his personal work and the reports of his subordinates to the recent extraordinary mineral development of the Province. Doctor Miller was fifty-eight at the time of his decease. A man of unusually stalwart physique, he seemed destined to many years of useful service. His friends in both the American and Canadian Mining Institutes can with difficulty reconcile themselves to his loss. Doctor Miller was born in 1867 in Port Rowan, Ont., on the shores of Lake Erie. After preparation in the high school of his native town, he entered the University of Toronto and took his bachelor's degree in 1890. He pursued graduate studies in geology at Chicago, Harvard, and Heidelberg Universities. In 1893, he was first appointed lecturer and soon thereafter Professor of Geology in Queens University, Kingston, Ont., a chair which he held until 1902. He was then appointed Provincial Geologist of Ontario and was placed at the head of the Survey which was attached to the Department of Mines. Within the next year, 1903, he performed the service that made him famous. In the summer of 1903, in connection with the building of the Ontario Government Railway toward an objective on James Bay, veins had been noticed by construction parties just north of what is Cobalt Lake today, and in the rocky pass that is now traversed by the main line of the Canadian National Railway en route to Vancouver. The pink stain of cobalt bloom on the vein, known later as La Rose, caught the eye of a workman; in November, Doctor Miller recognized the silver in it, and brought the possibilities of the district to general attention. In December, he published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, stating that the veins could be worked at a handsome profit. During the winter and spring, the mining interest awoke, which resulted in the astonishingly productive silver district of Cobalt; but in which, Doctor Miller, because a government official, scrupulously refrained from having any financial interest whatever. Seldom has so high a sense of honor been manifested; and as the result, Doctor Miller commanded confidence and respect to an extraordinary degree. (communication to the Secretary): In the comparative tests reported by Mr. Tays, the stamp-batteries were provided with various styles and mesh-sizes of screens, while the Bryan mill was run throughout with a slot-punched Russia iron, equivalent to a 30mesh wire screen. This is a somewhat onc-sided method of comparison. Should not the Bryan mill also have had the chance to show what it could do with other screens? I cannot wholly approve Mr. Tays's proposed improvements upon the Bryan mill. In my judgment, the inventor has given us a machine well-adapted to the work for which it was designed, namely, the crushing and amalgamation of soft ores. In my judgment, the principal cause of failure to amalgamate satisfactorily in the Bryan mill is not, as Mr. Tays thinks, the shallowness of the basin, or the lack of copper plate about the inside periphery of the mill, but rather the want of experience and practical knowledge on the part of most amalgamators. Having had experience, not with one Bryan mill only, but with several, and taking into consideration the experience of other capable mill-men, I am positive that the proper way to save gold ill this mill is: first, to use enough quicksilver to keep the amalgam liquid, thus allowing it to accumulate in the annular space between the dies and the rims of the basin; secondly, to replace the old dies, when a little more than half worn-out, with new ones; and, thirdly, to clean up the mill at least every two weeks—or oftener, if rich ore is being treated. It is evident that Mr. Tap endeavored to amalgamate quite " hard," as is done in a stamp-battery, in which case the swash of the pulp would scour off portions of the hard amalgam adhering to the inside plates and dash it through the screens— after which a considerable amount would be lost through floating on, or in, the pulp in its journey over the outside plates, and

Three hundred soil samples were collected on a one-mile grid in a 400-square mile area of the Oquirrh Mountains, Utah, including the Bingham-Lark, Ophir, Rush Valley, and Mercur mining districts. The soil samples were analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, silver, molybdenum, manganese, and iron by X-ray fluorescence using arsenic as an internal standard. Anomalies coincide in most cases with the mining districts. However, in the Mercur district no anomalies were detected. Also samples collected one mile from the Bingham mine barely reflect this major producer. No samples were collected within the Bingham mine area.

This paper by Mr. Thorneycroft, Past President of the Institution of Mining Engineers (Great Britain), and chairman of its Subsidence Committee, is a valuable contribution to the assemblage of data on ground movement and subsidence from coal mining. It deals with the effects of advancing longwall, a method almost universal in Europe but as yet little used in the United States outside of Northern Illinois and in a few scattered places elsewhere in thin coal beds, as in the Lexington field, Missouri. Canon City field, Colorado, and the Birmingham field, Alabama. Although by advancing lougwall, a maximum recovery of coal is obtained and it has to be employed where there are weak shale roofs, especially in deep mines, it is a more expensive method of operation unless the mining conditions are suitable, which is unusual in the United States. On the other hand, there is a growing use in this country of what is essentially retreating longwall, with an approximately straight break-line as described by Rayburn.1 With this method, in which the pillars are substantial, it was shown that the ground movement effect is practically identical with that of advancing longwall, hence the value to mining engineers of the precise data given by Mr. Thorneycroft. His study is unusual in several respects; it deals with conditions connected with the mining of a coal bed 20 in. thick, about 490 ft. below the surface, over a mined-out area in a 5-ft. bed about 90 ft. below, which had been mined about 12 years earlier. Both mines passed under Plean House, a building of massive cut stone construction built over a century ago, in which Mr. Thorneycroft resided throughout the under-mining period. Slight cracks opened in the walls as the longwall face approached the house in mining the upper seam, and closed after the face passed and subsidence took place. In the northwest wall, the last wall the face passed under, some stone blocks were broken, which was attributed to a strike period when the advance of face came nearly to a standstill. Other than this there was no perceptible permanent damage, as indicated by the photographs taken by the undersigned in 1923 (Figs. 1 and 2). Mr. Thorneycroft used a novel means of studying the successive positions of the corners of the building: he hung plumb bobs from the eaves and traced the paths of the respective plumb bob points on level surfaces. The angles made by the house walls with the plumb bob lines gave measures of the slope of the subsidence wave at the respective points. A slight upward wave was indicated by the surveys ahead of the subsidence, which would appear to be due to a tilting over of the massive sandstone stratum in the roof measures near the surface, the edge of the coal face acting as the fulcrum.

A rotational viscometer has been designed which perrnits the measurement of the rheological properties of drilling muds and other non-Newtonian fluids under conditions equivalent to those in a deep borehole (350F, 10,000 psi). The important mechanical features of this instrument are described, and its design criteria are discussed. The flow equations for the novel configuration of the viscometer are derived and the calibration procedures are described. The data and their interpretation, resulting from measurement of the flow properties and static gel strengths of homoionic montmorillonite suspensiom at high temperatures and pressures, are presented. Data are also presented for the flow behavier of typical drilling fluids at high temperatures and pressures. The pressure losses in the drill pipe and the annulus depend critically upon the flow parameters of the drilling fluid. This work demonstrates the need to measure these parameters under bottom-hole conditions in order to obtain a reliable estimate of the pressure losses in the mud system. INTRODUCTION The rheological properties of drilling fluids are affected by temperature and pressure, but the extent of these effects on the dynamic flow properties is not well known. Measurements of changes of the flow properties of clay-water drilling muds with temperature have been reported by Srini-Vasan and Gatlin.1 The temperatures reported did not exceed 200F, a limitation imposed by the apparatus used by these authors. The rheological properties of clay suspensions were measured at temperatures up to 100C by Gurdzhinian.' Neither the nature of the exchange ions in the clay suspensions nor the degree of purity were defined in his work, nor were the measurements extended to currently used drilling fluids. The lack of systematic measurements of dynamic flow properties at high temperatures and pressures seems the more surprising since during the last decade the importance of the control of the hydraulic properties of drilling fluids has come to be widely recognized. Very good mathematical treatments of the friction losses in drill pipe and annulus have been developed.3 4 These treatments are based on the assumption that drilling fluids behave as Bingham plastic fluids. Quite often this assumption is justified, while in other cases a power law equation pro- duces better fit than the Bingham model does. For convenience in applying viscometer data to pressure-drop calculations, the Bingham plastic flow equation is preferable and, therefore, has been applied to the data reported in this paper, although other equations may fit these data more accurately. In a Bingham plastic fluid the relationship between the shearing stress 7 and the rate of shear D is given by the following equation: where is the plastic viscosity and 4 the yield point. If 4 = 0, the equation for simple Newtonian flow, 7 = pD, is obtained. Two empirical constants are required for the description of laminar flow of a Bingham plastic fluid, and calculations of the flow behavior at high temperatures and pressures cannot be better than is permitted by the accuracy with which these constants are known. For this reason a high-pressure, high-temperature rhe-ometer has been designed to measure the plastic viscosity the yield point +, and the static gel strength S, at pressures up to 10,000 psi and temperatures up to 350F. The important features of its design will be described. The results of measurements on homoionic clay slurries will be discussed insofar as they are relevant to an understanding of the general flow behavior of clay-water drilling fluids. The results of measurements on some typical drilling fluids will be presented also, and their practical implications will be briefly discussed. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT MECHANICAL FEATURES A viscometer designed to measure the plastic viscosity, yield point and gel strength of non-Newtonian fluids must permit the measurement of the shearing stress t at any given rate of shear D. This is possible only if t and D are approximately uniform throughout the entire sheared sample. A Couette apparatus is the most convenient method of realizing this condition, as has been pointed out by Grodde." The "high-pressure, high-temperature rheometer" described in this paper is basically a rotational Couette viscometer that is immersed in a cell in which pressure and temperature can be controlled over the range of interest. Fig. 1 shows schematically the important features of the pressure cell and associated equipment. The heart of the instrument is the rotating cup. It is shown more clearly in Fie. 2. which revresents the lower one-third of the pressure cell (below the input drive shaft shown in Fig. 1), and it is shown in detail in Fig. 3. TIN markedly increases the softening temperature of pure copper with only a moderate effect on conductivity. Smart and smith' indicated a substantial increase in softening temperature upon addition of different levels of tin up to 0.05 pct in oxygen-free copper. However, after finding no effect of tin in copper containing about 0.025 pct O, they concluded that "the presence of oxygen completely nullifies these changes in properties by precipitation of SnO2.'' Since preliminary tests on Cu-Sn-0 alloys indicated that this conclusion is not valid outside the extremely limited tin range investigated by Smart and Smith, research was primarily directed toward the partition of tin between the copper-base matrix and the oxide phases. Experimental. Material was prepared by sealing an 80 to 100-g charge consisting of oxygen-free copper, tin, and copper oxide into a y-in.-ID quartz capsule which was evacuated and back-filled with tank-grade argon to 3 atm. The sealed vials were heated to 1125ºC, kept at temperature for 30 min, occasionally agitated, and then allowed to air-cool outside the furnace ("as-cast"). The castings were cold-swaged to 0.370 in., annealed 1 hr at 600°C ("as-annealed"), and cold-swaged 16.5 pct ("as-swaged"). Cross sectional wafers were annealed for 1 hr at various temperatures and Rockwell F hardness measured. The "softening temperature" was defined as the interpolated temperature at which the hardness was 50 Rockwell F. Electrical resistance was measured by an ac poten-tiometric method on 0.040-in.-diam wires after a 1 hr anneal at 600°C. Relative accuracy was of the order of 1 pct. Chemical analyses for tin were performed by two methods, identified as "Acid flux" and "HN03 dissolution". The first consisted of fusing the sample with potassium pyrosulfate and leaching the resulting melt with 10 pct sulfuric acid. The spectrophotometric procedure which followed is described in Ref. 2. Oxygen analyses were performed by the vacuum-fusion method with a bath temperature of 1650°C. Tin content of oxides and copper phases was measured with the X-ray microprobe, using a calibration curve based on a series of oxygen-free Cu-Sn alloys. Results. In Fig. 1, the nominal tin composition for alloys containing nominally 400 ppm O was plotted vs the analyzed or the computed tin content—the latter derived from one of the following: 1) "acid flux" chemical analysis; 2) "HN03 dissolution" chemical analysis; 3) X-ray microprobe analysis of the copper matrix; 4) equivalent tin content, based on the measured increase in electrical resistivity (an increase in resistivity of 1.6 microhm-cm is approximately equivalent to 1 wt pct of sn1,3). It is evident from Fig. 1 that the results of the acid flux analysis are consistent with the nominal composition while the HNO3 dissolution method generally yields lower values, consistent with those obtained from electrical resistivity measurements and somewhat higher than those obtained by microprobe analysis. The existence of iron ore and anthracite coal in the neighborhood of Providence, R. I., baa long been known, chiefly as a geological fact; that these materials, so near to each other and to tidewater, are of such a good quality and are present in such large quantity, as to have seriously raised the question of establishing blast furnaces there, was a surprising fact to me; and I have thought that the few notes I have lately gathered on the subject would be of interest at this partly New England meeting. The coal field referred to has an area of above 400 square miles, and is found throughout the belt of transition rocks extending from Newport Neck to Mansfield, Massachusetts. It underlies the cities of Providence and Newport, and the towns of Middletown, Portsmouth, Jamestown, Warwick, Barrington, Cranston, North Provi-

The coal-measures of George's Creek coal-region, in Maryland, lie in a comparatively flat synclinal basin, about 4 miles wide. The dip of the measures is, in places near the edge of the basin, as much as 20 feet in 100. The Pittsburgh seam, known locally as the " Big Vein," is the only seam worked at the present time. Ocean No. 3, one of the large mines of the Consolidation Coal Company, has its opening on the outcrop of the Pittsburgh seam, in a ravine which cuts into this seam to such an extent as to bring this opening to within a mile of the axis of the basin. After working all the coal to the rise of this point, the mine was further developed by extending a slope down the dip of the seam, making such an angle with the line of greatest dip as to give a grade varying from 1 to 10 per cent., down which the empty cars carry a rope from a single-drum winding-engine. The coal was worked from each side of this slope in successive Iifts during its progress. From the top of the slope, for a distance of 4000 feet to the fourth lift, the " make " of water is drained by gravity through a heading into the adjoining mine. Below this point the water was pumped into this same heading, at the fourth lift, from which point, as before mentioned, it flowed by gravity.

pH effectively regulates the flotation of corundum through its control of the surface charge. Since collector ions function as counter ions in the double layer, the collector must be anionic when corundum is positively charged and cationic when it is negatively charged. Even a long-chained xanthate will float positively charged corundum. Association of the hydrocarbon chains of the adsorbed collector ions gives rise to increased adsorption and increased rate of flotation. Because of this phenomenon, neutral organic molecules aid flotation although the unionized collector cannot promote flotation independently. Na2SO4 was found to depress the flotation of corundum with animic collectors through ionic competition whereas the same salt activates corundum for flotation with cationic collectors. A close connection between ion association, electrokinetic behavior, and floatability is suggested. As part of the increasing interest in the physical chemistry of flotation, strong experimental evidence has been obtained which indicates that organic ions are adsorbed as counter ions by non-metallic oxide minerals mainly because of the electrical forces which exist at interfaces(1-3). Thus flotation of such minerals without activation should then be appreciable only when the mineral and the collector are oppositely charged. Since only limited work has been reported on the effect of surface charge upon flotation behavior(3) this general hypothesis on the flotation of insoluble oxide minerals has not been tested thoroughly. Investigating the flotation of a mineral for which extensive electrokinetic data exist yields a way to test this hypothesis more extensively. The electrokinetic behavior of corundum in solutions containing both organic and inorganic electrolytes has been studied quite thoroughly' Electro-kinetic measurements have shown that in the case of corundum, simply by controlling pH the solid surface can be charged either positively or negatively. For this reason corundum was chosen for study. The object of this paper is to present a study of the flotation of corundum and to explain the results in the light of our knowledge of adsorption mechanisms gained from streaming potential investigations. This paper is concerned mainly with the effect of surface charge on flotation with anionic and cationic collectors, but in addition such flotation phenomena as collector hydrolysis, Van der Waals attraction between hydrocarbon chains, ionic competition, and activation are discussed. While the present paper is confined to a reporting of the data obtained and some of the more immediate conclusions, it will be seen that the results, in combination with those on other systems, do promise a

Joseph H. Birman (Chairman, Dept. of Geolcgy, Occidental College, Los Angeles, Calif.) Many thanks to J. L. Gillson for so comprehensive a survey of the titanium sand deposits of the world. Over the past two years, the writer studied rather carefully some of the Cretaceous ilmenite deposits in New Mexico and Colorado, including the Sanostee deposit shown in Gillson' s map, Fig. 6. The deposits were geologically mapped and sampled, surveyed by magnetometer, and the Sanostee deposit was drilled. Moat of the genetic interpretations made by Gillson concerning the recent sedimentary ilmenites can be clearly read in the Cre-taceous deposits in New Mexico. The deposits are in marine regressive members of the Mesaverde group. The deposits trend within a few degrees of N 55° W and persistence of this trend through both distance and time (the deposits are in different members of the Mesaverde group) implies that the deposits are offshore bar accumulations. Heavy mineral content ranges from about 10 pct to more than 50 pet. Thicknesses are from 4 ft to as much as 20 ft, widths range from 150 to 600 ft, and lengths range from a few thousand feet to a few miles. All are locally or completely overlain by carbonaceous shale and thin coal. The deposits are strongly altered, and from X-ray diffraction the principal titanium alteration product appears to be anatase. Drilling of the Sanostee deposit shows that the alteration is not related to the present erosion surface but took place at the site of deposition and before burial by the overlying sediments. Iron oxide derived from the alteration cements the grains and is the chief coloring agent in the immediately overlying shales. In the Sanostee deposit, there is virtually no feldspar, the gangue mineral being almost exclusively quartz. Sorting is excellent, but the quartz grains are subangular to angular. Petrographic examination reveals that the angularity is not due to overgrowths. Therefore, short distance transport is implied. The mineralogical composition suggests a low relief granitic terrane as the source area. Feldspar may have been decomposed by weathering at the source, but an alternative preferred by the writer is that each of the deposits represents a long-term concentration site (for example a large sand bar) which was continually being deprived of light minerals by wave action and selective transport. Feldspar may have been mechanically reduced in size more quickly than the quartz, and thus its rate of removal may have exceeded that of quartz. Concentration of heavy minerals would thus occur until the marine regression removed the zone of maximum wave energy from the site. Chemical alteration would then become the most important process until burial by encroaching swamp deposits.

Minas de Matahambre, a copper mine located 100 miles southwest of Havana, Cuba, has produced 10 million tons of copper ore since it was first opened up in 1913. During the mid-1950's the mine was producing approximately 1000 tpd and had attained a depth of 3600 ft. As shown in Fig. 1, the property contains three shafts: the No. 1 shaft, 2100 ft deep and located 2000 ft south of the No. 2 shaft, provided service to the 2100 level; the vertical 3600-ft No. 2 shaft handled all production to the 3400 level; the No. 3 shaft on the northeasterly fringe of the mining area was in a semi-active status.

Because of U.S. Forest Service regulations and the consequent cost of leaving several diamond drill holes open at the same time, it was necessary to develop an electrical method that could be used in one hole at a time to extend known mineralization. This was achieved by balancing the surface current electrodes so that the two potential electrodes in the hole being surveyed were in the same equipotential surface. This condition eliminated stratigraphic response but enhanced any asymmetry due to ore between the hole and either current electrode. This method was successfully used in mineralized holes at West Fork, Reynolds County, Mo., to show the direction in which to extend the drilling into areas of better mineralization.

The competitive position of producers of industrial minerals depends upon the delivered price of their product. Freight charges are a major factor in the sales to consumers. A comparison of freight rates on movements of limestone and silica rock in the Pacific Northwest shows a wide variance in mills per ton mile for like hauls, thereby favoring some localities over others. Introduction: Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. The distribution of copper between liquid silver and liquid iron, Fe-C, and Fe-C-Si alloys was studied at 1600°C. From the data and the activity of copper in silver obtained from the phase diagrams, the activity coefficients of copper in iron up to 3 atomic pct are log y, = 0.90 — 2.4 N, and y": = 8.0. The effect of carbon up to saturation is expressed as log y = 1.8 Ni. The effect of silicon up to 11 atomic pct is insignificant. SLOWLY rising copper content of steel being produced is focusing attention on the lack of information on the behavior of copper in liquid steel. Chou' measured the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron through its distribution between liquid silver and iron. He obtained a value of 9.12 at infinite dilution. Chipman' calculated the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron at 1600°C from the phase diagram and obtained a value of 12. Ameiln and Pfeiffer- investigated the possibility of removing copper from liquid steel through the use of lead, silver, and bismuth as solvents. They also calculated that the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron would be increased five or sixfold by addition of 4 pct C. Langenberg and Lindsay' are investigating the effectiveness of lead and sodium sulfide in removing copper from liquid iron. The experimental method was similar to that used by Chou' and Chipman and Floridis." Silver, copper, and iron were melted together, the copper distributing itself between the two layers so that at equilibrium a,.,, (in Ag) - a,.,, (inFe) and N,.,, (in Ag) yc,, (inFe) (in Ag). [21 N,.,, (inFe) Thus, from the concentration of copper in each layer and the activity coefficient of copper in liquid silver, the activity coefficient of copper in liquid iron can be calculated. The effect of an alloying element such as carbon on the activity coefficient of copper can also be determined from its effect on the distribution, provided the new element is essentially insoluble in silver. The one serious limitation of this method is the increasing mutual solubility of silver and iron in the presence of a third component. The mutual solubilities of pure iron and silver are negligible, but increase with increasing copper concentration beyond the range investigated. Ag-Cu System—The activity coefficient of copper in silver at 1600°C had to be estimated, since direct experimental data are not available. Kawakami" measured the heat of mixing of Ag-Cu alloys at 1200°C by a calorimetric technique. Scheil' calculated the heat of mixing in this system by use of the phase diagram, assuming that the solution is random and that the heat of mixing is independent of temperature. A description is given of grinding practice on the Rand and of experiments made to improve that practice. The paper includes a description of the experimental plants and methods and the results obtained. THE first tube-mill on the Rand was put into operation in May, 1904, at the Glen Deep Mine. From that time onwards, tube-mills were added to various plants, although little was known regarding the capacity of a given tube-mill when working on banket ore. Within a few years, however, the so-called standard size (length of shell 22 ft. 0 in. diameter 5 ft. 6 in.) was generally used until the last year or two. Practically the only exceptions were about 30 tube-mills having a length of 16 ft. and a diameter of 6 ft., and a few open-end mills of the roller-supported type. Most of the information obtained during the last 15 years has been obtained with mills of the standard dimensions. The adoption of the tube-mill as an accessory to the stamp mill was rapid; and where 3 tube-mills were working on the Rand at the end of 1904, 244 were in use seven years later.1 By 1910, good practice provided 1 tube-mill for 20 stamps of 2000-lb. falling weight. The horsepower of the motors driving the tube-mills had increased from. 80 to 100 and then to 125 at this date. Broadly speaking, current practice at that date aimed at a final product of which 60 per cent. was suitable for sand treatment and 40 per cent. for slime. The sand grading was +60 mesh, 6 per cent.; +90 mesh, 25 per cent.; -90 mesh, 69 per cent.; and the slime grading -200 mesh, 2 per cent.; -200 mesh, 98 per cent.

The presence of calcium and magnesium ions in iron ore pulps that are upgraded by selective desliming can result in indiscriminate flocculation of both iron oxide and siliceous gangue slimes. The removal of these alkaline earth cations in pulp solutions by chemical precipitation was ineffective as a means of deflocculation of quartz. It was shown by using various techniques (electron micrographs, abstraction, and streaming potential measurements, and cationic flotation tests) that heterocoagulation between the precipitates [Mg(OH)2, hydroxyapatite, and CaCO3] and quartz particles was the reason behind that observation. In addition, the precipitates adversely affected the recovery of quartz by cationic flotation, due to slime coating, a case of heterocoagulation. Magnesium hydroxide produced a uniform layer of coating across the quartz surface, while hydroxyapatite and calcite produced discrete, localized deposits dotting the surface.
