THE first mention of the mining and use of coal in the Pittsburgh district refers to the mine under Duquesne Heights that furnished coal for the garrison at the fort at Pittsburgh in 1760. Coal had been dug and used as fuel just outside of Brownsville, Fayette county, in 1759, but this was not a regular mine as the opening was in an outcropping. Maps of Ohio in 1770 showed "Cole Mines" at various points. The Penns purchased all the coal south of Kittanning in southwestern Pennsylvania from the Chiefs of the Six Nations for a reported price of $10,000. During the Revolution, coal from Herron Hill, Minersville, and Coal Hill, all within the present city limits, was used in Pittsburgh. There is today one custom pit opened in Coal Hill (Duquesne Heights). The first steam engine was set up in Pittsburgh in 1794 and used coal as fuel. The first mine in the Youghiogheny gas district was opened in 1796. In 1803, the first shipment of coal by water was made from Pittsburgh down the Ohio river and landed at Philadelphia, where it sold for approximately $9.50 per ton. The mines along the Monongahela were naturally the first to be opened. With the completion of locks and dams in 1844, permitting slack-water navigation, the industry began to thrive. The No. 8 field of Ohio and the Fairmont region of northern West Virginia were opened in the period 1840 to 1855. From that time on there has been a continuous development of the coal resources of this district, until at present-productive capacity is enough to supply 30 per cent. of the country's needs of bituminous coal. In the early 1950's the cement industry began putting a new emphasis on geology. This article points up some of the industry's raw materials problems that geologists are uniquely qualified to handle. Portland cement can be made from relatively abundant industrial minerals and rocks, and this may explain why cement producers placed little emphasis on geology during the early days of the industry. After World War 11, however, the industry began to recognize the need for geological exploration and some of the larger companies began to build a permanent geological staff. This development has its roots in: 1) The rapid expansion of the industry. After World War II and continuing into the early 1950's the demand for cement far exceeded the production capacity. This placed a great deal of pressure on the producers to enlarge capacity at their plants and to develop new sites. 2) The closing of many cement plants due to inadequate raw materials. Producers feared lack of raw materials due to inadequate exploration and evaluation. 3) An ever increasing pressure for upgrading of the quality of portland cement, necessitated upgrading the quality of raw materials. 4) The increasingly large capital investment needed to build new cement plants required a higher degree of accuracy in reserve calculation. These reasons are more or less self explanatory and will not be elaborated on. They are outlined to illustrate the probable evolution of thought among cement management to justify the development of a geological staff. In the author's personal experience the geologist must continually readjust to changing conditions within the industry. For example, cement production capacity grew so rapidly that today production is only about 70% to 75% of rated capacity (73.8% in 1963). Therefore, whereas the geologist's function during the active expansion of capacity was primarily one of exploration, one of his major functions today is the development of existing reserves. This assumes of course that reserves at existing plants have been proven to be adequate in terms of the company's reserve policy. Through the proper development of raw materials, the geologist can markedly influence quality control, production and long range planning. Examples of several of the operations of Medusa Portland Cement Co. will illustrate how proper attention to geologic detail pays off in the above areas. Because limestone is the major raw material of port-land cement, the examples will be concerned with it. DEVELOPMENT OF GEOLOGIC DETAIL One of the prime objectives of an exploration or development project should be the establishment of the stratigraphy and structure of the deposit. The basic tool for exploration and development is still the core drill, and the geologist must gain a maximum amount of information from a minimum amount of drilling. In order to obtain this objective the following is essential: 1) Adequate detailed geologic logging of cores. The core is first logged and separated into lithologically distinct units. In order to make the lithologic breaks as meaningful as possible, representative pieces of core (not all) are etched in dilute HCI. This removes the "drill polish", brings out the structure of the rock and indicates the proportion of dolomite and argillaceous material because dolomite and argillaceous material etch in relief. In this way the lithologic breaks become clearer and one gains a general idea of the chemical makeup before analysis. This method of logging lessens the probability of including two types of stone, e.g. limestone and dolomite into the same sample for chemical analysis. 2) Representative sampling for chemical analysis. After logging, the lithologic units are sampled for chemical analysis. A representative analysis can be obtained by extracting a 1-in. sample for every foot of core. For example, a lithologic interval of 10 ft to 20 ft would yield ten 1-in. samples taken at 11 ft, 12 ft, 13 ft... and 20 ft. These samples are then crushed, pulverized and split into a sample for chemical analysis. This sampling method represents a significant saving of time over splitting the entire core. 3) Preparing the core as a record. Because of the expense of storage and the difficulty of handling large amounts of core, only representative samples of each lithologic unit are saved for reference. An

Chemical methods, based on the relative rates of oxidation of fusain, bright coal, and dull coal by nitric acid, have been devised to determine these coal components.1-4 Results obtained by oxidation methods for fusain have been checked against results obtained from microscopic methods on duplicate samples of the same coals, but to the author's knowledge this has not been done for bright and dull coal components. For this reason it is not certain that the two methods of analysis identify essentially the same chemical or physical units. It would be highly desirable to see results of the application of both methods to duplicate samples, but in the absence of any such data the author has attacked the problem indirectly. From the U. S. Bureau of Mines samples were obtained of three Alabama coals which the USBM had analyzed optically and reported on over the past 30 years. These samples were subjected to analyses by oxidation rate methods. Results of this work, and comparisons with the USBM analyses, have been published. This was the first indirect approach to the problem. The present report attempts a second indirect approach by way of internal validation.

R. S. Shoemaker: Our first question is, is there a need for a grizzly before a primary crusher? What is its effect on crusher capacity and crusher maintenance? Is it worth the extra capital cost in a crusher installation? Vincent: ASARCO has a grizzly at Mission. Utah Copper uses grizzlies ahead of their gyratories. There is some quite abrasive ore at Mission, an argillite type of rock, which has a work index of 16.5 to 20, which is getting up toward the taconite classification. We get a life of 12- 16 million tons per set of concaves or per mantle with the grizzly ahead of the crusher. At Duval Corp., some 6 miles to the south of Mission, their crusher installation on a good, hard rock does not have a grizzly, and the last information I had is they get a life of about 2 ½ -3 million tons on their mantle and concave. At Silver Bell, our other copper unit in Arizona, they do not have a grizzly ahead of the gyratory and there they get a life of about 5-6 million tons. At Utah Copper, which we all know is a fairly soft ore, relatively speaking, they get a life of 24-27 million tons with grizzlies ahead of the crushers. I think a grizzly has a very definite effect on the life of the mantle and the concaves. As far as a jaw crusher is concerned, I think that usually it is desirable to have a grizzly if it is properly designed, which means it is self- cleaning. Otherwise I would not like to see one in the circuit.

The internal friction of cold-worked titanium iso-thermally annealed at temperature below the recrystallization temperature was measured. The internal friction was calculated from the half width of a resonance curve of the specimen which was vibrated transversally by the electromagnetic method. The experimental results were as follows: 1) The specimens annealed for a long time at temperature below the re crystallization temperature after cold working have the strain-amplitude dependent internal friction. 2) The internal friction increased by the cold working was decreased during the isothermal annealing. The reason of decrease of the internal friction is considered to be caused by the annihi-lation of lattice defects. 3) There is a linear relation between logQt-1/Q0-1 and (1/T)2/3 below the recrys-tallization temperature, where Q0-1 is the internal friction standing 24 hr at the room temperature after cold rolling, Qt-1 is the internal friction annealed at T°K for t min. 4) The hardness of the cold-worked titanium does not change by the annealing at 300°C for a long time but decreases by annealing at 400ºand 460°C. METALS, when cold worked, show sharp changes in physical and mechanical properties' The internal friction of cold-worked metals increases sharply and has a maximum value1,2 connected with working de- grees. The increased internal friction of cold-worked metals is recovered by annealing. This phenomenon is the well known effect called Köster effect. The recovery of the internal friction occurs earlier than the changes in tensile properties, hardness, or X-ray diffraction, and is very sensitive to the structure of a metal. The mechanism of the recovery at a temperature lower than the recrystallization temperature is being considered variously by many investigators: there are such views as the annihilation of dislocations by smith,' the rearrangement of dislocations mentioned by Nowick,4 and interaction of dislocation with point defects.5 Smith and Nowick also considered the interaction but it is so difficult for them to explain the rearrangement mechanism systematically, it being not considered a special model; therefore, we do not explain it quantitatively. Experiments measuring the recovery of the internal friction of cold-worked metals were performed by Gordon and Nowick6 on NaCl, and by Smith on copper. In addition, there are many studies, particularly those of measurements on copper by other investigators. There are comparatively many investigations on aluminum and iron which are the cubic system,'-' but only a few on metals of the hexagonal system.10 In view of this, I investigated cph titanium at room temperature and measured the internal friction after annealing isothermally at temperature lower than the recrystallization temperature. INTRODUCTION Autogenous (including semi-autogenous) grinding has probably been the most important single innovation in milling practice for the last twenty years. However, the design of these units has been largely a matter of trial-and-error, since the normal empirical laws for the design of ball mill circuits do not apply with exactitude to autogenous grinding circuits. There have been examples of autogenous mills failing to achieve output or product specifications. It is worthwhile, therefore, to attempt to develop a more detailed and precise set of design laws, using the concepts of specific rates of breakages and daughter fragment distributions (1), and performing mill simulations by computer. This type of approach has been applied to ball and rod milling (2, 3,4,5), but even for these mills it is by no means complete as yet (6), because of the amount of experimental work involved. There has not been a strong incentive for industry to develop new design procedures in ball and rod milling because the prior back-log of experience with these mills makes for easy design by empirical comparsion with existing systems. The new approach has been followed mainly by University groups (7,8,9,10), although experience in Australia (9,11) has shown the advantages of the approach. OF the forty or more excursions provided for the delegates to the World Engineering Congress at Tokyo, the trip to the Ashio copper mine stands out as one of the most enjoyable. In every detail looking to our comfort and pleasure the Furukawa company, our hosts, were admirable. This company operates five other copper mines, also gold and coal mines. Ashio is the largest with an annual production of about 14,000 tons of copper. It has been continuously worked since 1620, and doubtless was one of the sources of copper used in the gigantic statues of Buddha of many hundred years earlier date.

The property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, about 75 miles to the eastward from the port of Chafñaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges, and the mine and metallurgical plant are both on the westerly slope of the outer or western range. Mean elevation of the mine is 10,500 ft., while at the plant the elevation ranges from 9445 to 9700 ft. A meter gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 94 miles, of which 57.79 miles are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. and the remainder of the road is controlled by the State. Development of the Potrerillos mine and installation of the metallurgical equipment presented unusual difficulties due to the arid nature of the country, high altitude and remoteness of the location from any considerable center of population. As a primary step it was necessary that railroad transportation be provided in order that mine development and plant construction could go forward on an economical basis. Provision of an adequate supply of water for domestic and metallurgical uses involved the construction of approximately 178 miles of pipe lines, all of which have their sources at altitudes ranging from 12,000 to 14,000 ft. above sea level and traverse rough and difficult terrane. Water for metallurgical use is brought to Potrerillos from the Ola River, a stream originating in the high cordillera to the eastward from the property. It is delivered by means of a steel pipe line, 32 miles long, having diameters ranging from 22 to 36 in. Domestic water is supplied to the various camps through a system of pipe lines aggregating 146 miles in length, the Ola water being unfit for this purpose. These conductors gather water from numerous springs in the high mountains to the eastward from Potrerillos and deliver it to the mine, the reduction works and the port at Barquito. Generalized conditions for rod or ribbon growth by the twin plane re-entrant edge mechanism are given. It was shown that this mechanism can result in growth of twinned platelets from dilute metal solutions. The platelrts 01 the fee metals are faceted by (111) planes and contain two or more twin planes. Microsegregation traces were revealed in silver grown from a thallium solution. VOGEL has already set down conditions for dendritic growth;1 however, this was the normal single-crystal dendritic growth experienced during solidification. In this work it is desired to set down the crystallographic conditions that will lead to rod or ribbon growth with smooth facets. These are as follows. a) The growth must be crystallographically limited (i.e., faceted growth). b) In order to have directed growth, some mechanism must allow easier nucleation than two-dimensional nucleation. That mechanism is afforded by the re-entrant edges at twin planes.213 Thus there must be twin planes present in the rods or ribbons. c) The growth direction must lie in the twin plane. If not, the twin plane will grow to the face or side of the ribbon and the site of easy nucleation will be lost. d) The growth direction must be parallel to at least one plane of the faceting planes, and no set of the faceting planes can be perpendicular to the growth direction. A corollary to these conditions involves the number of twin planes necessary to maintain the indestructible re-entrant edge. The number depends on the crystal structure of the material. An analysis of the data available shows that a material whose faceting planes form an open figure requires at least one twin plane while materials whose faceting planes form a closed figure require at least two twin planes in order to form the indestructible re-entrant edges for extended growth. The conditions and an assessment of the possibility of rod or ribbon growth are given in Table I for several crystal systems. As can be seen the fee, diamond and zinc blende, or-thorhombic, rhombohedral, and one form of the hexagonal lattice systems can yield this type of growth, but not the bcc metals nor the hexagonal

The peak of production from the Appalachian natural gas field was apparently reached about 10 years ago, and the annual production from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio has now dropped to about two-thirds of the amounts obtained in 1916 and 1917. This falling off in production has occurred in spite of vigorous efforts and large expenditures by producing companies to maintain or increase their output. The greatly increased costs of development and handling are reflected in the present average value of natural gas at the point of consumption, which value in the three states referred to has more than doubled in the past 10 years. While it is true that the natural gas production of the United States has increased during recent years, this increase has come from southwestern states, particularly from Oklahoma, California, Louisiana and Texas, which states are now leaders in the production of this valuable but fleeting resource. Pennsylvania, originally the leading state in natural gas production, occupies sixth place in the latest (1924) U. S. Bureau of Mines statistics. West Virginia, which held first place for 15 years, has dropped to third rank, and Ohio is the seventh state in the order of natural gas production. Domestic and industrial demands for gas are constantly increasing everywhere in the United States. These growing demands have accentuated the difficulties in the localities with depleted natural gas supplies, and serious shortages have already occurred during winter months in the Pittsburgh district. Some relief has been obtained by placing restrictions on the industrial use of natural gas, and by increasing the price (which tends to reduce consumption). Yet these are but temporary expedients for checking gas consumption, which fail to solve the problem of adequate future supplies of gas. Gas is an exceedingly valuable and important form of fuel, and serious restrictions on its use cannot be tolerated for long in any community. As the supply of natural gas declines, it must be supplemented and eventually replaced with some form of manufactured gas. Many cities, including Pittsburgh, are already supplementing their natural gas supply with the manufactured product.

This paper will discuss a US Bureau of Mines project designed to assess and predict the impacts which surface coal mining will have on the regional shallow groundwater system in the Powder River Basin. The primary objective will be met through the accomplishment of the following: (1) The design and establishment of a regional network for monitoring shallow groundwater systems in the basin; (2) monitoring the direction and rate of flow, water quality, and aquifer characteristics of the shallow groundwater systems; and (3) development of a regional groundwater simulation model, with appurtenant subroutines to determine local effects.

THE constitution of the indium-zinc alloy series has been investigated by Wilson and Peretti,1 who determined the liquidus and eutectic temperatures by the conventional method of cooling curves and the eutectic composition by analyzing eutectic exudations. Recent developments affecting the availability of indium and consequent increased interest in its applications make a more complete knowledge of the constitution of its alloys desirable. As a part of a program for the reexamination of the constitution of indium alloys by precision methods, the indium-zinc phase diagram [ ] (Figs. I and 2) has been redetermined in its entirety. The eutectic temperature (143.5°C.) reported by Wilson and Peretti has been confirmed exactly, but their value of the zinc concentration at the eutectic, 4 per cent, was found to be high; the new value is 2.8 per cent of zinc. There is also a rather large difference between the forms of the liquidus curves of Wilson and Peretti and those found in the present studies. THE time-honored description of the growth of metal crystals to form polycrystalline aggregates is. one in which two important steps are considered: (1) nucleation, and (2) dendritic growth, each dendrite starting from its individual nucleus and resulting (upon slow cooling, assuming no solid phase changes) in a macrograin. This picture of the process of crystallization is incomplete, and it is with the hope of enlarging upon it that the following summary and correlation of experimental results are given. MOSAIC STRUCTURE For an exact definition of the mosaic structure of metal crystals-if, indeed, one can be found that will hold for all metals-one must await the results of much experimental work in this field. The writer's investigations have been. confined almost entirely to copper and a few of its alloys. Mineralized breccia pipes, because of their wide-spread occurrence and close structural relations to some of the world's great ore bodies, are objects of unusual interest for mining engineers and geologists. The literature contains many references to them, but it is questionable whether their genetic significance and economic importance have been sufficiently emphasized. The purpose here is to stress these features, relating them to the field facts, for the particular benefit of younger generations of geologists who, confronted with and sometimes confused by the growing flood of geochemical, geophysical, and other specialized research approaches, may be reassured that mappable field relations remain a foremost guide to a better understanding of ore deposits. A mineralized breccia pipe is a pre-mineral, breccia structure which has controlled the circulation and deposition of subsequently introduced mineralization. It is composed of relatively rotated angular or rounded rock fragments, set in a mineralized matrix. A pipe in plan outline may be circular, oval or approach polygonal form, with a steep to vertical axis proportionately much greater than its horizontal dimensions. The pipe is a steeply plunging, chimney-like mass of brecciated rock cemented with later minerals.

Northwest frontier is here defined as Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia. The mineral potential of this area is great and will unfold in the decade ahead but now the largest single producer is the Pine Point lead-zinc mine in the NWT about 1200 km north of Edmonton, Alta., close to the south shore of Great Slave Lake. The mill, initially designed for 4540 mtpd, was expanded to 7250 mtpd in 1969. This operation is described in detail in Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc, Vol.1, Chapt. 17, SME/AIME in the article by W. H. R. Gibney.

REGULAR production of chrome in Turkey started in 1860 with the operation of the Bursa deposits (5, Fig. I). Others were discovered at Makri, near Fethiye (3, Fig. I). For 33 years Turkey remained the principal source of this mineral. While new discoveries were coming in elsewhere, Turkey's output declined until 1921, as a result of four successive wars, which ruined the economics of the country. In 1927 a revival came with the production of 18,000 tons. In that year the Société Minière de Fethiye was formed. This company now operates mines in the Vilayets of Aydin, Denizli, Burdur and Mentese, and it has reached a maximum production of between 80,000 and 90,000 tons annually. The Turkish output therefore increased from 29,000 tons in 1930 to 55,000 tons in 1931; and to 119,009 tons in 1934. The second phase in the increase in chrome production in Turkey came about in 1935, when the Government decided to reorganize and control the mineral industry of the country according to the principles of "government control" of the present regime. Up to that time the mineral resources of the country had been exploited by private concerns. In 1935, the M.T.A. (Maden Tetkik ve Arama) Institute (Institute of Mining Research and Geological Survey) was established by the Government to do the geological and geophysical survey work and discover new mineral resources for the country. Before the establishment of the M.T.A. Institute, the chief chrome-producing region was Fethiye (3 and 4, Fig. I). As a result of the extensive work of this bureau, many new chrome deposits have been discovered and are now in production. The operational field of the mineral industry was given to Eti Bank, another Government-sponsored and Government-controlled establishment. Eti Bank gradually took over the exploitation of existing mines by purchasing them from privately operated companies. Attention was first given to the Zonguldak collieries and to the different chrome deposits scattered over the country. The Guleman mines (14, Fig. 1) were developed and put in operation in 1936. Since then the bulk of Turkish chrome output has come from this mine, which yields the highest grade ore in the world (averaging 52 per cent Cr2O3). In 1939, the recently discovered chrome deposits to the north of Eskisehir went into production, yielding ore having a Cr2O3 content of 51 to 52 per cent. Today, more than ever, the efforts of both the M.T.A. Institute and the Eti Bank are concentrated on finding new deposits and placing them in operation. There are still many promising regions of the country that merit systematic surveying and prospecting for chrome ores. Thus it is probable that Turkey will continue to make noteworthy progress in chrome output. As the annual chrome production of

THE ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed.
