Discussion of the paper of PAUL BILLINGSLEY, presented at the New York meeting February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 31 to 47. JAMES F. KEMP, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Billingsley has spoken so concisely that we may not realize the many important topics which he has passed in review and upon which lie has thrown much illumination. The exact determination of the age of the granite, itself, is one. If we were to look over a geological map containing the region of Butte and 25 years old, we would find this coarsely crystalline mass assigned, as were others of its kind, to the pre-Cambrian, or as we used to say, to the Archean. In the course of time it was found to be later. The Butte Special Folio, 1907, described it as post-Carboniferous and possibly post-Laramie. Mr. Weed in Professional Paper No. 74 of the U. S. Geological Survey (1912) placed it as probably Niocene because of its relations with the andesite, which was believed to be Eocene. Mr. Billingsley now by a very neat demonstration circumscribes it more definitely and we recognize that it must be latest Cretaceous or earliest Eocene. We see, however, that extensive field observations, ably correlated, were necessary to establish the conclusion. For some years all familiar with Butte have known that there was a central area the veins of which carried copper ores in a quartz gangue; and that outside this area there were veins carrying silver ores in a gangue of manganese minerals. Mr. Sales's able and detailed paper, read at the Montana meeting, August, 1913, not only corroborated these relations, but emphasized the transitional character of the intermediate or passage zone. Mr. Billingsley is now able to show from observations at increasing depths, the tendency of the copper ores to appear deep down in the veins

An equilibrium isotherm at 550°C is given for ternary alloys rich in aluminum containing 0 to 15 wt pct Cr and 0 to 20 wt pct Mn. Phases encountered are: aluminum solid solution; stable temary compound G; and MnAl8,. In addition, a limited number of alloys were annealed at 450°C to check for differences from the 550°C isotherm. These experiments limited the composition of the G phase at 550°C and further experiments established that the G Dhase is not stable above 590 ± 1 °C. RAYNOR and Little1 established several equilibrium isotherms using aluminum-rich alloys containing up to 5 pct of the elements chromium and manganese. These isotherms showed that, in addition to an a solid solution and the two binary intermediate compounds 8 and MnAl6, a stable ternary compound ex-isted in the system. This phase was called the G phase because of its ghostly appearance in micro-sections. Little, Raynor, and Hume-Rothery2 found a similar phase in binary aluminum-manganese alloys and, as a result of their experiments, concluded that the G phase was a metastable phase existing in the aluminum-manganese system. This phase was stabilized by the addition of chromium. The constitutional work of Raynor and Little,' although showing the existence of the G phase in the aluminum-chromium-manganese system, did not establish precisely the composition limits of the phase or the temperature above which the phase became unstable and disappeared from the system. The work described in this paper was undertaken to provide this information. An examination of the previous work' showed that an isotherm at 550°C would provide the required data regarding composition in the shortest possible time, as the (a + G) phase field narrows considerably at higher temperatures. The same work showed that the G phase ceased to exist between 580° and 595°C. A more precise estimate of the transformation temperature would therefore be obtained by annealing selected alloys at successively higher temperatures beginning at 580°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1) Materials Used—The experimental alloys were prepared from four master alloys containing 15.00 w pct Cr, 15.28 wt pct Cr, 19.80 wt pct Mn, and 19.38 wt pct Mn which were made from super-purity aluminum, electrolytic chromium, and electrolytic manganese. The aluminum was of 99.996 pct purity, the principal impurities being copper, iron, and silicon. The chromium and manganese were 99.9 pct pure, the principal impurities being antimony, calcium, and magnesium. 2) Preparation of the Experimental Alloys—The alloys were prepared in 20-g quantities by melting together the requisite amounts of master alloy and aluminum in an alumina-lined crucible and, after thorough stirring with an alumina rod, cast into a cold copper mold to give ingots 1/4 in. in diam and 3 in. in length.

THE minerals that collectively are known as chromite form an isomorphous series of the general formula (Mg,Fe) 0. (Cr,Al,Fe) 203. So wide is the range in chemical composition in this group that chrome ore consisting entirely of the mineral chromite may range from less than 30 pct to more than 60 pct Cr203. The most comprehensive published data on the chemical com- position of chromite are by Stevens,62 who made complete analyses of 52 samples of chromite concentrate from many localities in North, Cen- [ ] tral, and South America. These samples were mechanically purified to remove associated silicates and might be regarded as the cleanest chromite that could be obtained by any mechanical milling process. Fig 1 shows the predominant zone of isomorphism, within the triangular prism of composition defined by the mineralogical end members of the series, wherein his analyzed samples fell.

ONCE a millionaire's plaything, the Santo Domingo mine, in Peru, is now, because of its metallurgical problem, an engineer's nightmare. It is deep in the montaña jungles of the Amazon basin, 140 mi. northeast of Tirapata, which is a rail- way station between Puno and Cuzco, and about 250 mi. east of Mollendo on the Pacific. The discovery was 111ade by Marian(-) Quispe, an Indian, who, while searching for quinine bark, was attracted by a slab of gold quartz 1x1 the rock wall of a narrow canyon. He broke off a piece, weighing 47 Spanish ounces and, that time, worth approximately $900. This he took to Francisco Velasco and Manuel Estrada, merchants of Coaza, who persuaded Quispe to lead them to the place, five days' journey on foot through a tangled wilderness. This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplishing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowledge the very great willingness of these outstanding scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is possible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to complete an analysis. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis. The Mass Spectrometer The mass spectrometer should not be confused in any way with the optical 01 grating type of spectrograph now in general use. The operation of the mass spectrometer is entirely different in principle and bears practically no resemblance to the optical or grating instruments. The original conception and development of the mass spectrometer dates from and is generally credited to Aston, of Cambridge, England. An early accomplishment of his research, about 20 years ago, was the discovery that the inert gas neon was actually a mixture of two kinds of atoms, one of the atomic weight 20 and the other of atomic weight 22. These two components occurred mixed in such proportion as to yield the usual atomic weight of 20.2. For many years, coal has been known to exist in the valley of the Sabinas river, in the State of Coahuila, and for about 15 years it has been worked by the Mexican International Railway Co., which opened mines for its own fuel-supply when the railway was built, and has been mining continuously ever since. The coal-basin worked by this company lies along the Sabinas river, principally on the SW. side. It covers a wide area and has been carefully prospected, but only in a few parts have the beds been found sufficiently thick and regular for economical operation. This Sabinas basin was considered the only one in this field, until, in the Spring of 1899, the Las Esperanzas basin was found by Messrs. J. L. Elliot and E. D. Peters, who were in Mexico looking after some copper-properties. After a further examination by Mr. James T. Gardiner, of New York, the Mexican Coal & Coke Co. was organized in June, and active work was begun on Nov. 5, 1899. The coal-field of Las Esperanzas, situated in the State of Coahuila, about 85 miles SW. of Eagle Pass, Texas, adjoins and runs parallel with the Sabinas basin—an anticlinal separating the two outcrops by about 2 miles. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of a part of the basin. The coal-formation is in the Upper Cretaceous, and corresponds with the Laramie measures of the United States. THE zinc deleading processes at the Parral and Santa Barbara mills are described separately to provide a basis for comparison. Although the two procedures are fundamentally alike, there are some differences in application to meet specific conditions. The Asarco mill at Parral in the State of Chihuahua is a flotation plant treating 1450 metric tons- per day of complex sulphide copper-lead-zinc ores. In general, the procedure used for selective separation of the minerals into a copper, a lead, and a zinc concentrate follows the usual practice. First, a bulk copper-lead concentrate is floated and then separated into a final copper and a final lead concentrate by the sulphurous acid process. A small tonnage of high grade gravity lead concentrate is tabled from the bulk copper-lead cleaner tailing before it is reground so as to avoid undesirable over-grinding and sliming of this portion of the lead, mineral. Next, a zinc concentrate is floated from the lead rougher tailing and, as described later, is separated into a final lead product and a final zinc concentrate. Finally, the zinc rougher tailing receives a strong scavenger float to remove all recoverable middling values for regrinding, and return to the flotation circuits. The slime is separated from the scavenger flotation product, and only the sand portion goes to the regrind section. The minerals in the separated slime are extremely resistant to all methods of selective separation and pose one of the major problems awaiting solution. Nevertheless, the slime shows a profit when mixed with either the lead or the zinc concentrate, except when metal prices are very low, so it is accepted as a final product for lack of a more profitable method of handling it. ON JUNE 7 the German Government handed to the French and Belgians a new proposal for reparations, which offered 1,200,000,000 gold marks annually, to be guaranteed as to 500,000,000 by a mortgage on the national railways, as to another 500,000,000 by a mortgage on industry, commerce, land and factories, and as to 200,000,000 by a luxury tax. The number of years for which this payment should run to be left to settlement by an international conference. This offer was taken under consideration by the French and Belgians, who instituted conversa-tions with the British in the hope of arriving, at some joint action with respect to the Germans. Up to the end of June nothing had been determined. In the meanwhile, the continued French and Belgian occupation of the Ruhr seemed to develop a condition of guerilla warfare, considerable bloodshed occurring throughout the region. The second Lausanne Conference dragged on, the Allies being apparently unable to take any firm, joint stand, while the Turks increased their importunities and managed to get concession after concession. Early in June a revolution occurred in Bulgaria, the previous Government under Premier Stambulisky, based on the agrarian party, being forcibly thrown out by a bourgeois and military combination. This pro-duced considerable disorder in Bulgaria, outside of which country the nature and purpose of the revolution does not appear to be well understood. Stambulisky's partisans offered feeble, isolated resistance to the revolu-tion; in connection with which there was some blood-shed and Stambulisky himself was reported killed, although this was later contradicted. Professor Zan-kof, the new Premier, issued a statement, that the change of the Government was the result of discontent, that the foreign policy of the new Government would be peaceful, and that Bulgaria would continue to fulfill her international obligations, particularly the treaty of Neuilly. It was the opinion of London that the immu-nity from taxation enjoyed by the farmers under the agrarian regime is likely to he superseded by more equi-table taxation, and in general that the bourgeoisie will be better administrators of the public affairs In domestic affairs industrial activity continued at a high rate, but there was distinct relaxation in the demand for raw materials, and also in some manufac-tured goods. During June there were reductions of prices by many of the automobile tire manufacturers. There seemed to be also further contraction in the demand for automobiles.

HAVING had occasion while in Europe during the past summer to visit some of the foreign mints and assay offices connected with the same, I thought a brief description of the general process of coining employed, and such items connected with assaying as were new, might prove interesting to the Institute. The principal foreign mints are: the Royal Mint, London; and the mints in Paris, Brussels, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Rome, and Constantinople. My time only permitted my visiting a few of the principal and largest given in the list, and for a description of the remainder I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. James M. Napier, who in company with the deputy master, and chemist of the Royal Mint, made a complete inspection of all the European Mints in 1870.

CONDITIONS at the properties of the Consolidated Coal Co. had reached a point where improvements were almost impractical. The mines, sunk years ago, had shafts and entries so small as to preclude the use of large mine cars. A radical change was necessary in the type of mining and also in the type of mine to accommodate such haulage units. After due consideration, the company decided to enter the field of trackless mining, utilizing belt conveyors and chain-flight conveyors, the belt conveyors to take the long haul, and the chain-flight conveyors to be used for gathering. It was decided not to sink a shaft, but to drive a slope on an inclination of 17 1/2°, which the company believes to be about the limit on which coal can be carried on a belt without rolling back unduly.

THE history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur Co. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Pu-Ce phase diagram was determined by differential thermal analysis, metallography, and elechm-nricroprobe analysis. The dingram is chararterized by a eutectic with extensive solid solubility in the cubic Phases of both cerium and plutonium. No intermediate phases were found. Cerium is soluble in e plutonium to 16.0 at. pet Ce at 626OC nnd in d plcltoniurn to 23.0 at. pet at 613 "C, decreasing to 17.5 at. pet at room temperature. No solubility in the a, ß, or ? phases was jound, and the mininum cerium required to stabilize 5 plutonium to room temperature is 3.2 at. pet. The maximum solubility of plutonium in 6 cerium is 19.5 at. pet at 721OC, and the maximum soluhility of plutonium in ? cerium is 34.5 at. pet. Invariant points in the system are: a) eutectic at 626oC, L16.5 = E Pu16.0 + y Ce65.5; b) peritectoid at613oC, e Pu13.5 -y Ce65.5- d Pu23.0. AS part of a program aimed at the determination of the phase equilibria in the Pu-Ce-Cu ternary system, preliminary investigations were made of the three binary systems. A survey of the Pu-Ce binary system by differential therma1 analysis indi- cated several areas of disagreement with the published diagram,' primarily in the shape of the liquidus surface. Consequently, a thorough investigation of the system was undertaken, and this report presents the results of the study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three methods of investigation were used: differential thermal analysis (DTA), metallography, and analysis with electron-microprobe X-ray analyzer (EMX). The EMX analysis was particularly useful for the determination of solvus lines. The DTA method was most useful for the determination of the liquidus curves. Metallography complemented both of these techniques. Materials. The cerium metal used for most of this work had a freezing point of 805°C. This material showed 15°C premelting, and was found metallographically to contain some unidentified in~lusions.2 The temperature of premelting is defined as the point at which the DTA curve breaks away from the base line, analogous to a curve obtained from a solid-solution alloy. Several compositions were prepared near the cerium end of the diagram with higher-purity material which had a freezing point of 800°C. etallographic analysis showed this material to be relatively free of inclusions and only 8°C premelting was observed. Discussion of the paper of L. A. DELANO, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 129, September, 1917, pp. 1267 to 1286. L. A. DELANO.-Since this paper was written, our daily mill tonnage has increased, from 2100 tons to 2700 tons a clay. We now use 11,000 lb. of chrome-steel balls of 2 ½ -in. maximum diameter, for an average crushing capacity of 275 tons per 24 hr., this giving a much higher crushing efficiency. I wish to call attention to two typographical errors in my paper as published. On page 1271, Table 1, the screen analysis of ore at the Bonne Terre mill should be stated in inches instead of mesh. - On page 1272, "the rolls average 185 tons per 24 hr., and have shown by test that 250 tons per hour can be maintained" should, of course, read "250 tons per 24 hours." THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Is the increased mill capacity due to improvement in the re-crushing of middlings or to keeping middlings out of circulation and treating them separately? L. A. DELANO.-AS was shown in Mr. Rabling's paper (Bulletin No. 128, p. 1161) the tonnage was raised by about 400 tons by simply changing the arrangement of screen openings in the jig bed and using punched plate instead of woven-wire screen. Then, by adding a ball-mill, we are taking from the jigs a much larger tonnage of middlings than before or as much as the ball-mill will crush. By sending the ball-mill product to tables and flotation, the jig capacity for original ore is increased. CHAIRMAN BILHARZ.-In your opinion, the satisfactory operation of a Hancock jig on a given ore requires adjustment of the length of the different screens and careful selection of screen openings? L. A. DELANO.-I think it does. In order to decide what screen openings to use on the jigs, we did a great deal of experimental work, making screen analyses of the various hutch products, and then hand-sorting the galena, middlings and chat from each size screen to determine the percentage of galena in each. Then adjusting our jig screens, we gradually worked the process up to a very efficient basis. Rapid depletion of the world's mineral deposits combined with the expanding demand for metals places great pressure on our ability to provide technologically and economically feasible processes to recover greater amounts of metals from progressively lower grade sources. Chemical mining is one area in which expanding research and development can provide new processes or refinements to existing ones. These new techniques could result in increased production of metals from materials now considered uneconomic to process by current technology. To mine by chemicals requires the interaction of such disciplines as hydrometallurgy, microbiology, chemistry (both organic and inorganic), fluid flow, mineralogy, geology, and of course, economics. One of the least understood areas but one which may end up being an essential part of any chemical mining process is microbiology, i.e., the role of microorganisms in altering minerals and metals in solution.

The tensile properties of columbium and Cb-H alloys containing up to 455 ppm H were studied as a function of temperature and strain rate. Hydrogen, introduced into columbium at elevated temperatures, using a thermal -equilibrium technique, embrittled columbium most severely at about —77°C. This elnbrittle ment occurred even at hydrogen concentrations of an order of 20 ppm. At higher temperatures, the hydrogen tolerance of columbium increased in relation to the increased solubility of hydrogen in tile metal. Below this temperature hydrogen tolerance, as determined by ductility and fracture stress, increased slightly. Strain rate had little effect on the tensile results for cross-head speeds over the range 0.002 to 2.0 in. per min. Strain aging during the tensile test appears to explain the ductility mininmum at —77°C. The apparent increase in hydrogen tolerance at lower temperatures is attributed to the low mobility of hyhogen. Experiments were performed in which samples were prestrained in tension at room temperature and tested to failure at —196°C. Results suggest that hydrogetz segregation to preformed crack nuclei can cause subsequent embrittlement even at temperatures where hydrogen mobility is too low to cause embrittlement in a normal tensile test. COLUMBIUM is an example of the class of bcc metals with ductile-brittle transition temperatures sensitive to the presence of interstitial atom contaminants. Hydrogen is one of these embrittling contaminants. The embrittling effect of hydrogen is less potent, perhaps, in columbium than in some of the other bcc refractory metals, but it is still a problem of both theoretical and practical interest. Unlike hydrogen in iron and steels, hydrogen in columbium is exothermically rather than endo-thermically occluded. The embrittlement process in exothermic systems has not been studied as extensively as that in endothermic systems, especially at hydrogen concentrations below the limit of solubility. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the embrittlement process in initially pure columbium as a function of hydrogen content, temperature, and strain rate. The Cb-H phase diagram, according to Albrecht et al.,1 is shown in Fig. 1. Columbium reacts exothermically with hydrogen producing a solid solution at concentrations of less than about 250 ppm (parts per million by weight) H at room temperature. At concentrations above the highly temperature-dependent solvus a second phase is formed. Like many similar hydrogen-metal systems,2 his system exhibits a miscibility gap with respect to hydrogen solution. Albrecht found the critical temperature of the miscibility gap to be about 140°C, the critical concentration to be 0.23 atom fraction hydrogen, and the critical pressure to be 0.01 mm Hg. Above 140°C there is a solid solution of increasing lattice constant extending across the phase diagram. Hydrogen concentrations of particular interest in this investigation were those below the limit of solubility in columbium. At hydrogen concentrations above the limit of solubility, columbium will contain the hydrogen-rich second phase and will be brittle under most testing conditions because the hydride generally precipitates as platelets with coincident matrix lattice strains.1'3 At hydrogen concentrations below the limit of solubility, the tensile behavior of columbium is expected to be more sensitive to the interrelationships between hydrogen concentration and mobility and the testing variables such as temperature and strain rate. Literature references to the hydrogen embrittlement of metals, especially ferrous alloys and titanium alloys, are too voluminous to mention. It is only recently, however, that detailed studies of the hydrogen embrittlement of columbium have been undertaken. Wilcox et a1.4 studied the strain rate and temperature dependences of the low-temperature deformation behavior of fine-grained are-melted columbium (1 ppm H) and the effect of hydrogen content (1,9, and 30 ppm H) on the mechanical behavior of columbium at a series of temperatures for a single strain rate. A strain-aging peak was ob-served at about -50°C which was attributed to the presence of hydrogen in the metal. Eustice and carlson5 studied the effect of hydrogen on the ductility of V-Cb alloys at a series of temperatures over the range -196° to 25°C. Pure columbium was embrittled by 20 ppm H which produced a ductility transition at approximately -70°C. Ingram et al.6 studied the effect of oxygen and hydrogen on the tensile properties of columbium and tantalum. A minimum in the notched-to-unnotched tensile ratio of hydrogenated columbium was obtained at about -75°C, but because of the relatively large hydrogen content employed (200 and 390 ppm) the ductility

THE Duluth gabbro outcrops containing sulphides of copper, nickel, and iron are located on both sides of State Highway No. 1 an airline distance of 8.5 miles southeast of Ely in northeastern Minnesota. The region of known sulphide occurrences includes parts of sections 5, T. 61 N., R. 11 W., and parts of sections 25, 26, 32, 33, and 34, T. 62 N., R. 11 W. These sections, given in Fig. 1, are all in Lake County, Minnesota. Part of the area, which lies entirely within the Superior National Forest, is shown on the topographic map of the Ely quadrangle. The original discovery was made in 1948 when a small pit was opened in weathered gabbro rubble for use on a forest access road. A shear zone had caused unusual decomposition in this glaciated area, and the resulting copper stain was noted by Fred S. Childers, Sr., an Ely prospector, who began searching the outcrops along the base of the intrusive. He was joined in further exploration by Roger V. Whiteside of Duluth. In the summer of 1951 a small diamond drill was moved into the area and a hole 188 ft deep was drilled, passing through 11 ft of glacial drift into sulphide-bearing gabbro. This paper is a preliminary report on the geology of the newly discovered ore. The Duluth gabbro is one of the largest known basic intrusives and may be defined as a lopolith.1 It extends northeastward from the city of Duluth as a great crescent-shaped mass that intersects the shore of Lake Superior again near Hovland, 130 miles to the northeast, see Fig. 2. The distance around the outside of the crescent is nearly 170 miles. The form of the intrusive is simple at Duluth where it ends abruptly north of the St. Louis River; at the east end, however, the gabbro splits into two elongated, sill-like masses separated mainly by lava flows and characterized by minor irregularities. The outcrop reaches a maximum width in the central part where it is about 30 miles across, and a maximum thickness of about 50,000 ft. It may be significant that the sulphides occur at the base of the thickest part. The lopolith has segregated into rock types ranging from peridotite to granite. The most abundant types are olivine gabbro, gabbro, troctolite, anorthosite, and granite. Of lesser importance quantitatively are peridotite, norite, pyroxenite, magnetite gabbro, and titaniferous magnetite. Grout estimates that two-thirds of the gabbro at Duluth is olivine gabbro. Variations in the percentages of plagioclase, augite, olivine, and magnetite-ilmenite constitute the only essential differences found among the basic rock types. The predominant mineral is plagioclase, mainly labradorite. Plagioclase and olivine seem to have crystallized early, and the olivine rich rocks, usually troctolite, are found in the lower part. Segregations of titaniferous magnetite are abundant near the base of the gabbro along the eastern part and also occur far above the base. These have recently been described in detail by Grout' Near the top, segregation has produced a gradation to granite, or "red rock," as it is known locally. This consists of quartz, red feldspar, and hornblende. The red rock forms a. zone with a maximum width of nearly 5 miles but is quantitatively unimportant from Duluth northward for 35 miles. In Cook county, where the gabbro splits, each of the two sill-like masses has a red rock top somewhat thicker in proportion to the gabbro below than in the main central mass. The intrusive ranges from coarse to medium in grain size and from granitoid to diabasic in texture. Throughout much of the Duluth gabbro in Minnesota banding and foliation are well developed, as Grout has emphasized! The bands are mainly a result of variation in the percentage of minerals, as in troctolite with alternating bands high in olivine and in plagioclase. A few bands may consist largely of one mineral, as is true of some segregations of magnetite. Many of the banded rocks show a clearly developed parallelism of platy plagioclase crystals, and both banding and foliation are believed to conform to the floor of the lopolith. Throughout its extent in Minnesota the Duluth gabbro dips east and south toward Lake Superior. It is generally believed to extend beneath Lake Superior and is found as a smaller mass exposed along the north side of the Gogebic district in Wisconsin and Michigan. The dip at and near the base ranges along most of its length from 20 to 40°, but at places the internal banding dips even more steeply. The dip of the upper part is much less, and if it is assumed that the flows along the north shore of Lake Superior are a dependable indication, it does not exceed 15º. The formations shown in Table I which are intruded by the gabbro range from Keewatin to Middle Keweenawan in age. They present a significant picture. At the top, the gabbro and its accompanying

It may surprise some of our members to learn, that, among the industries based on the mineral resources of the United . States, clay now ranks third, being exceeded in value of product only by pig-iron and coal. The present annual value of clay-products exceeds the value of the outputs of gold or silver, and also exceeds the combined values of copper, leacl, zinc, aluminum, mercury, antimony and nickel. These facts are shown in Table I. which gives the statistics for the year 1902 :

During the two years that the Henderson plant has been in operation, a number of technical improvements have been made by the staff of Basic Magnesium, Inc., the effects of which were realized subsequent to the writing of the paper by Major C. J. P. Ball (p. 28j, this volume). Pellet Mix The process as originally installed required the use of peat moss in the mixture going to the chlorinators. This had to be imported from Canada at a considerable cost, and, besides being expensive, constituted a serious fire hazard in the dry climate of Nevada. Experimentation looking toward its elimination had been going on for some time and was actively pushed as soon as operations commenced. It was found that a pellet mix containing no peat, which would chlorinate at a satisfactory rate, could be cast as a fluid slurry, which would set up into a hard mass having the desired porosity. For carrying out this operation, equipment similar to that used in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer at Anaconda, Mont., was installed and proved eminently successful. The dry materials, with peat moss and raw concentrates entirely eliminated, are mixed with magnesium chloride solution in two Pratt phosphate mixers and the resultant slurry is poured onto two 48-in. slowly moving rubber conveyor belts. By the time the slurry has reached the head pulley, the material has set su4iciently to be broken and sized as desired. The discharge from the casting belts is fed to the four rotary kilns in the preparation plant, where it is dried and coked to the proper degree for subsequent chlorination. With the peatless feed the capacity of the kilns was found to be about double what it had been before, so that the four rotaries suffice for a 10-unit operation, thus making it unnecessary to operate the extruders and tunnel kilns. In addition to saving the cost of the peat, the new system can be operated with about 85 per cent less labor than was formerly required in the preparation plant. The new pellet production system has also made it feasible to install centralized crushing equipment with suitable conveyors and a loading station. Containers of 8000 lb. capacity were substituted for small cubicles of 1000 lb. capacity which formerly were used for charging the chlorinators, and trailer trucks were substituted for the small trains originally provided for transportation from the preparation plant to the chlorinators. These changes resulted in a considerable saving in handling and transportation charges. Handling Molten Metal The molten magnesium originally was ladled from the electrolytic cells into small gas-fired brick-lined cars standing between the cell rows.
