THERE exists in., the territory embraced between the summit of the Sierra Nevada and the coast a great dike and vein system that appears never to have been recognized in its entirety, nad many facts concerning it have never been published. This is important, not only in affording numerous clues bearing on the origin, nature, and age of the mercury deposits, and eliminating many controverted questions, but it. incidentally affords numerous facts bearing on the genesis of gold, copper, chromite, magnesite, dolomite, a type of calcite deposit, and numerous associated minerals. The mineral springs of the State almost without exception emanate from these dikes. A great range of the hydrocarbons also exists throughout the entire system of these dikes. Seepages from their, walls have frequently been mistaken as emanating from the inclosing sandstone and shale, resulting in heavy expenditures in the futile development of these Cretaceous beds, which contain no petroleum within the territory. The theory of mountain making by lateral or tangential pressure is inconsistent with some of the following recorded facts. The limitations of this paper do not admit of a description of each of the hundred or more mercury deposits embraced in the area, and therefore only typical examples will be described. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, is not submitted as complete, or as entirely accurate, but it is as nearly so as the notes at hand will admit. The field is too extensive to be completely covered by a single individual. The heavy continuous lines represent sections actually surveyed! The sections and extensions- in. dotted line are assumed, and are either unsurveyed, or -buried under younger beds. There are numerous branches connecting the great parallels that the small-scale map does not admit of plotting, even if the survey had been complete. Likewise, the conclusions in some instances may be faulty, but it is to be hoped that as a whole they may serve as a foundation on which a more complete structure may be built in the future.

ALTHOUGH the shooting of oil wells for the purpose of increasing production has been practiced since 1866, present-day shooting technique has been arrived at almost wholly by a process of trial and error. The difficulties attending either a theoretical analysis of the problem or an experimental attack become apparent when one actually embarks on a theoretical investigation or attempts to formulate an intelligent experimental program. The literature on the subject consists mainly of descriptions of current practice, scattered eye-witness accounts of events following the shooting of a well, and vague speculations on the mechanical processes involved. In contrast to quarry blasting, the results of oil-well shooting cannot be determined by means of visual inspection, and it is perhaps for this reason that only one attempt at what approaches a direct experimental attack has been reported in the literature.1 In these experiments, charges of liquid nitroglycerin were exploded in holes drilled in a sandstone outcrop. In order to observe the character and extent of the resulting fractures, the rock was blasted away so as to expose the original shot holes. After all this had been done it was found impossible to distinguish the fracturing due to the original shots from that due to the subsequent blasting. The enlargement of the holes due to the pulverizing action of the shots was. measured and an attempt was made to determine the effectiveness of 'sand tamping. Only five shots were made and few definite conclusions could be drawn. Some small-scale experiments to determine the effect of tamping were performed by Snelling and Hall,2 Small charges (20 grams) of dynamite were detonated at the bottom of a cylindrical hole in a lead block and the resulting enlargement of the hole was taken as a measure of the effectiveness of the explosion. It was found that when the shot was tamped with a sufficient amount of sand or clay, the volume enlargement was approximately double that found when no stemming had been used. The properties of the explosives have been the subject of much study by the manufacturers, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and various other agencies. For example, velocities of detonation for many commercial explosives are to be found in the Blasters' Handbook, issued by the Du Pont company. Many other properties are given in a treatise on the subject by Naoum.3 The shock wave that accompanies the detonation of high explosives has been studied photographically by Payman4 and others. The hydrodynamical theory of the shock wave has received much attention, and an extended theoretical treatment is given by Bateman.5 Two aspects of the well-shooting problem will be considered in this paper; namely, the fracturing of subsurface strata, and possible damage to casing. With respect to the former of these, several calculations have been made giving the stresses in the rocks surrounding the shot. Emphasis is placed on characterizing the effects of dispersion in laboratory tests using engineering models which provide information useful for the improvement and control of existing plant operations. Significant economic gains in the above named operations have been realized using these models as guides for full- scale plant testing.

The mechanism of materials transport was studied in a model experiment in which a silver sphere was sintered to a silver plate under an applied external stress near 800° C. For this purpose the rate of growth of the neck between the sphere and the plate which is proportional to the strain rate of the creep process involved in a neck growth was determined by measuring the change in electrical resistance of the away. This rate of neck growth will depend upon the magnitude of the applied external stress. By measuring the rate just before and just after a change in the external load and therefore the applied stress, the relationship between strain rate and stress can be derived. For material transport by slip in a pure metal it is expected that the strain rate should be proportional to the 4.5th power of the stress, while for transport by diffusional flow the strain rate should be proportional to the first power of the stress. It was found that for stresses above 5 X 10' dynes per sq cm (70 psi) the exponent in the stvain rate-stress relationship was near 4.5 while for a stress of 0.7 x 108 dynes per sq cm (10 psi) an exponent of 1.8 was determined indicating that under the conditions of the experiment the transport mechanism for creep in silver shifts from diffusional flow to slip in the region of 0.7 x 106 dynes per sq cm (10 psi). The importance of these findings for an understanding of the mechanism of material transport in conventional sintering (without an external load) is pointed out. In a paper by Early et al.,' the mechanism of material transport during sintering was treated as a creep process. It was pointed out that two possible types of creep processes could operate during sintering. In one of these material transport takes place by vacancy diffusion due to a gradient in chemical potential. The vacancy sinks in this diffusion process may be either grain boundaries, as in Herring-Nabarro microcreep, or regions beneath a surface of small radius of curvature. The diffusive transport may be by volume, grain boundary, or surface diffusion. In the other mechanism, creep takes place by slip, i.e., dislocation motion with its rate generally controlled by dislocation climb. One method of distinguishing between these two modes of materials transport is to investigate the creep rate, i.e., the rate of material transport as a function of stress. For material transport by vacancy diffusion, the creep rate is proportional to the stress.' For creep by slip, controlled by dislocation climb, the creep rate is proportional to a power of the stress. For pure metals this power is 4.5;374 for dispersion-strengthened material a fourth power relationship can be derived.5 This difference in the stress dependence of the strain rate is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1, in which the logarithm of strain rate is plotted vs the logarithm of the stress for material transport in a pure metal by vacancy flux and by dislocation climb. The stress range in which the two types of material transport overlap would be expected to be relatively small. In the experiments described by Early and coworkers compacts pressed from spherical copper powder were sintered isothermally under an applied axial external load in a dilatometer. During sintering the magnitude of the applied external load was changed and the rate of axial shrinkage of the compact before and after the load change determined. In order to find the stress dependence of the strain rate the magnitude of the stress acting on the neck area between the spherical particles before and after the load change had to be calculated. This stress is the resultant of the stresses due both to the externally applied load and to surface tension. The stress due to surface tension is a function of the geometry of the powder compacts. It can be determined, at least for simple geometrical arrays,'76 but it is difficult to obtain exact values of the stresses for actual powder compacts when only average values of particle diameters and of neck diameters between particles are available. The calculation of stress and the strain rate-stress relationship is therefore only very approximate.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) IN giving my opinion of the importance of Colombia as a field for investment for those interested in mining for the precious metals, I must begin by quoting Sir Clement Markham, who, in one of his presidential addresses to the Royal Geographical Society of Great Britain, called the attention of its members to the fact that " although Colombia is the least known and least developed of the South American republics, it is far and away the richest mineral country of then all." This to American investors is extremely interesting, as the country is the most accessible of all the South American republics from the United States. Almost all of the gold shipped by the Spaniards from Madre de Dios, now Colon, came from Colombia, and statistics from the Mint at Medellin, the capital of the Department of Antioquia, go to show that the total production of the precious metals of Colombia, dating from the Spanish conquest in 'the fifteenth century to the present time, aggregates the enormous total of $700,000,000. Of this amount, nearly 70 per cent. represents gold obtained from the placers of the Republic, more than one-half of which came from the Department of Antioquia, the balance being divided between the placers of the Choco and the rest of the Republic. The remaining 30 per cent. of the $700,000,000 represents the silver and gold obtained from the quartz mines, the silver greatly predominating.

THE study of the creep of metals under conditions of prolonged loading has received the attention of many investigators for several years and almost innumerable papers have been published on the various aspects of the subject. As it appeared that much could still be learned from a study of single crystals, the present work was carried out to study the effects of temperature and conditions of loading upon the properties and deformation in tension of single crystals of alpha brass containing about 70 per cent copper and 30 per cent zinc. In particular, it was hoped to obtain information from tests below and above the recrystallization temperature of the material, so that properties such as elastic limit, yield point or critical stress, and manner of deformation might be compared for tensile tests at an ordinary loading rate and for prolonged. loading. Accordingly, short-time tensile tests and creep tests were made at room temperature, 300º, 500° and 700°F. The two latter temperatures are above the lowest possible recrystallization temperature of polycrystalline 70-30 brass. PREVIOUS WORK Clarke and White1 have made creep tests of some copper-zinc alloys, including 70-30 brass, and copper-zinc-tin alloys at temperatures both below and above the recrystallization temperature of the materials considered. Hanson and Wheeler have studied the flow and fracture of single crystals of aluminum for short-time and prolonged tensile loading over a range of temperature extending from room temperature to 400°F., their experiments being made without consideration of the orientations of the test specimens. Extensive creep and fracture tests on single crystals of lead at room temperature have been made by Betty3 and by Baker, Betty & Moore.4 Results of the last-named investigation were published while the present work was in progress. Millers examined the elastic limit of zinc single crystals at and above room temperature by means of creep tests, while Miller and Milligan6 reported the results of tests designed to show the influence of temperature on elastic limit of single crystals of aluminum, silver and zinc. The behavior, of iron crystals under static tensile loading at room temperature was reported by Gensamer and Mehl7 while the present investigation was in progress. Their specimens exhibited a well-defined yield point, below which no appreciable creep could be detected. The manner of yielding proved interesting, as the shape of the creep-time curve for the iron crystals differed from the common type of creep curves. Elongation did not begin immediately, or at least was initially very slow. The rate of elongation then increased continuously and finally decreased to zero. This S-shaped type of elongation-time

Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 189 consists of a record of the scientific data obtained in the iron blast-furnace slag investigation which is reported in Technical Paper 187, "Slag Viscosity Tables for Blast-Furnace Work." It includes a description of the method of preparing the synthetic melts, construction of an improved electric furnace, and refinements in laboratory methods of measurement. Only the general features of the work and the conclusions drawn from the experimental data can be given attention here. Silicates in the Liquid State In the manufacture of refractories, Portland cement, glass, and porcelain, and in pyrometallurgical operations, importance attaches to the behavior of silicate compounds at temperatures beyond the range of common experience. This field of research has not been investigated as carefully as its scientific and industrial importance would seem to warrant. Probably the most important of the unsolved problems in the, chemistry of silicates is the question of their stability in the liquid state. That little progress toward the solution of this problem has been made is not strange if there be borne in mind the difficulties attending experiments made at temperatures at which silicates become fluid, and the comparatively short time since it became possible to measure these temperatures. On the other hand, considerable progress has been made in the study of the compounds in the solid state because of the directness and simplicity of methods of optical examination.

ALTHOUGH data on the exact tonnage of recoverable coal silt are not known, the quantity produced in 1943 was estimated to be over five million tons for the anthracite region of Pennsylvania alone. Since that time the recovery of the No. 5 buck- wheat size previously included in silt estimates has increased greatly thus reducing the total silt tonnage. As a compensating factor, however, the methods of recovering silt previously escaping into the rivers and streams have been markedly improved so that the net figure may not have changed materially. Comparable estimates for bituminous coal are lacking, but undoubtedly the silt represents a significant tonnage. With the trend toward increased wet cleaning of the smaller sizes of bituminous coal, it is to be expected that even greater quantities of silt will be available in the future. The raw silt from anthracite collieries usually contains a high mineral matter content, but technological developments in fine coal cleaning have been making rapid advances and it appears probable that more extensive use of these methods will be employed in the near future. Bituminous coal silt in many instances contains a similar high mineral matter content. As with anthracite silt, however, the cleaning of this material, where necessary, appears both technologically and economically feasible. With a view to upgrading the size and value of silt, considerable laboratory and pilot plant work has been conducted by a number of organizations on what is commonly known as pelletization. Actually the process is one of extrusion in which the moist silt is extruded from a die in the form of rods, which usually break into relatively short lengths-a few inches long-as they fall from the die. Fig I is a photograph of some extruded 3/8-in. diam pellets and of the anthracite silt from which they were produced. This technique of producing larger sized material from fines is by no means new, having been used extensively by the industrial carbon and clay industries for years.' The application of the process to coal silt appears, however, to be relatively new. The first major program of investigation dates back only to July 1945, when a group of engineers representing the Anthracite Institute, The Pennsylvania State College and the J. F. Pritchard and Co. conducted preliminary tests on the extrusion of anthracite silt at the Floridin Co. plant at Warren, Pa. Since that time these three organizations-individually, together, and in co- operation with other interested groups- have actively pursued work on various phases of the problem. Much of the early history and details of the laboratory and pilot plant work by the Anthracite Institute, has been reported by Mulcey and Eckerd.2 It is the purpose of this paper to report additional information on the process, especially with respect to the factors influencing the quality and use properties of the product, and the current develop

PROBABLY the earliest concentration of iron ore in this country was carried on in the northeastern magnetite areas. Magnetic concentration was relatively simple and gave a concentrate that, after agglomeration, and in spite of being high in phosphorus because of the dry concentrating methods then in use, was satisfactory blast-furnace feed. Production from the northeastern magnetite area languished after the discovery and development of the Lake Superior ores, where there was seemingly an unlimited tonnage of high-grade ore, first the Michigan ores, and subsequently the still larger deposits of Minnesota. For years only the higher grade, direct shipping ores of the Lake Superior district were mined. Those of Michigan, and of the Vermilion Range in Minnesota, were hard ores and came principally from underground mines. The softer ores of the Mesabi came partly from underground mines, but mostly from the enormous deposits that could be worked by open-pit methods. The costs of ore from these open-pit deposits, even with the high initial cost of stripping, were so low that the underground mines of the Mesabi could hardly compete. The so-called Old Range ores, of Michigan and of the Vermilion Range of Minnesota, were hard and lumpy, and opened up the burden in the blast furnace, therefore making possible harder driving with greater output. Also, some of these ores were of such grade and physical characteristics that they were suitable for charge ore in the open hearth. These ores, therefore, commanded a price premium, and could compete with the softer, finer, but cheaper, Mesabi ores. The big tonnage reserves, however, are on the Mesabi, and it is these big open-pit deposits that constitute our stock pile of iron ore, from which we are drawing so heavily during this war period. On the western end of the Mesabi the ore was found to be high in silica, and not suitable as furnace feed. As early as 1902, attempts were made to concentrate this so-called wash ore and by 1910 the first washing plant was put into operation. The process was very simple, consisting essentially of a sizing and washing operation, with scalping screens, logwashers, and tables, which later were replaced by classifiers. Ore particles finer than 100 mesh were deliberately wasted, because these fines were undesirable in the furnace. Fortunately, these tailings were impounded, and already are being reworked. Before long some of the low-grade ores began to require more elaborate treatment than the simple washing operation and, tables having been discarded because of their low capacity, in favor of classifiers, jigs were next introduced. These were able to discard coarser pieces of tailing than classifiers. Jigs are in active use today, various improvements having been made in their design and application. Various other machines and methods of concentration have been tried from time to time, and have in turn been discarded for more improved processes. CRUSHING has always been a major operation in the chemical and metallurgical industries, yet little is known about the theory of crushing, and today, the design of crushers is still based almost entirely on empirical knowledge and accumulated practical experience. In view of the increasing national need for the economic working of poorer grades of ores, the lack of a fundamental understanding of this unit operation hardly presents a satisfactory situation. Basic investigations of crushing have been concerned mainly with three phases of the problem, 1—the mechanism of the fracture process itself, 2— the particle size distribution of the crushed product, and 3—the relationship between the energy input and the amount of new surface produced. Probably adequate information on these phases will be required for a comprehensive understanding of the process of crushing. A bibliography covering these phases will be given as well as a review of the work done in recent years at the University of Minnesota on the relationship between the energy input for crushing and the amount of new surface produced. Fracture of Solids This phase of the crushing problem is the most fundamental because it is concerned with the actual mechanism of fracture. The main problems in a study of the fracture process are concerned with the questions of why and how fracture occurs and why there is such a discrepancy between the actual and theoretical energies needed in a fracture process. In considering the how of fracture, Poncelet40 carried Out experiments On the crushing of glass under compression. Actual photographs were taken of the glass plates in various stages of fracture-From these experiments Poncelet was able to postulate a probable mechanism of fracture. Probably because of the quantitative nature of the problem, considerable effort has been expended to find an explanation for the low tensile strength of materials and the conversely high energy for crushing. Tensile strengths are often only 1/500 of the theoretical while the energy for crushing is usually at least 500 times the theoretical. A review of the work to explain the low strength of glass is given by Weyl,52 in which the work of Griffith," Joffe,32 and Powell and Preston " are discussed. In a recent paper Seitz46 holds that the presence of flaws and fissures, as originally expounded by Griffith, is the most probable reason for the low strength of metals. Since a mass of data has been accumulated on the fracture strength of materials, several investigators have attempted to correlate this data in the form of an equation. Glathart and Preston," Taylor,40 Ponce-let,40 Machlin and Norwich," and Frederickson and Eyring,20 have all considered this problem, and the final relationship has always been that the stress for fracture is proportional to the logarithm of time. Murgatroyd30 arrived at a very similar relationship by a different method. The study of the fracture process has used many methods. Among some of these are the thermody-namic approach used by Furth21 which was based on the work of BornxL and later used by Saibel,43 and the statistical method applied by Fisher and Hollo-mon.10 In recent years metallurgists have concerned themselves with the problem of brittle .fracture as opposed to the usual plastic failure of metals. The great amount of interest shown is reflected by the number of contributors to the recent symposium on the fracture of metals.' A diaphragm diffusion cell suitable for use with liquid metals was designed and tested by measuring the diffusion coefficients for a Hg-10 pct In alloy at 25°C. The binary diffusion coefficient and the coefficients for In and Hg tracers were measured at this composition. The measured coefficients for both tracers were less than the binary diffusion coefficient. When these coefficients were combined with the activity correction term of Darken, the predicted binary coefficient was somewhat higher than the experimental value. In recent years a number of investigators have been studying diffusion of liquid metals in order to gain a better understanding of the liquid state and to examine possible applications to liquid metal processing. The bulk of this work has involved either self-diffusion or diffusion of low concentrations of solute metals in an essentially pure solvent metal. The most common experimental technique employed has been the capillary-reservoir method of Anderson and saddington1 since it is well-suited to measurements involving low concentrations of solutes. As an expansion of previous studies, an investigation of the variation of diffusion coefficient over large composition ranges has been undertaken in this laboratory. Although it is possible to modify the capillary-reservoir method for such measurements, the technique loses its principal advantage of requiring only small quantities of solutes. Therefore, it was felt desirable to investigate other possible experimental techniques applicable to measurements over large composition ranges. A technique which has been used widely in measurements of other liquid systems and seemed potentially applicable to studies of liquid metals was the diaphragm cell. This method has been found to combine relative simplicity of operation with accurate and reproducible results. In use with normal liquids, the tyiical diaphragm cell utilizes a porous glass disk. However, because of the high surface tension, it is not possible to use a diaphragm of such fine pore structure with liquid metals. Furthermore. projected use at high temperatures makes the use of glass undesirable. Consequently, the first problem was the search for an appropriate cell design. EXPERLMENTAL Diaphragm Cell. A number of possible cell designs were examined. Prototypes of several were constructed and tested. The final design is shown in an exploded view in Fig. 1. The cell consists of two identical chambers, one on either side of a 0.20-in.-thick partition. The chambers are 0.15 in. deep and have a volume of 3.45 cu cm. Each chamber is provided with two small threaded holes for filling and emptying. The filling holes may be sealed with stainless-steel screws. Drilled lengthwise through the center partition is a 0.250-in.-diam hole. Inserted into this hole is a rod having seven 0.059-in.-diam holes drilled radially through it. The total "hole" volume is 0.078 cu cm. When the rod is properly aligned, the holes in it constitute the "diaphragm" through which diffusion occurs. The center section was of Teflon and the rod and face plates were of Plexiglas. Four such cells were constructed and used in this study. Subsequent to this investigation, a similar cell constructed entirely of iron was fabricated and tested at higher temperatures. Several considerations led to this final design. It is desirable to minimize the volume of the cell chambers to decrease the time required for a measurement. However, the total volume of metal in the diaphragm must be small in comparison with that in the chambers. To facilitate filling and emptying it is desirable to have a diaphragm which may be closed.

The works of the Ore Knob Copper Company are situated in the county of Ashe in the northwestern part of the State of North Carolina, about ten miles from the Virginia line, at an elevation of 4600 feet above the sea. The nearest railroad station is at Marion, Smythe County, Virginia, about forty-five miles distant. The roads from the railroad to the works have been constructed by the company for the transportation of their material, and are very hilly, and in certain seasons of the year in bad repair. Transportation is therefore always limited and never easy, although it is done by contract at a very low price. The main difficulty with the transportation is not so much its cost as the fact that it puts a limit to the production of the works. These unfavorable conditions make it necessary for the owners of the mine to smelt their ores and to send to market nothing except the metal, which alone will bear the cost of transportation. The mine was opened previous to 1860, but has only been worked systematically during the last five or six years. The vein is a fissure vein from ten to twenty feet in thickness in the gneiss of the

The paper is a general description of the U.S. lead and zinc industries as they are now compared to ten years ago and the effect of recent world-wide developments. Topics of interest concerning lead are the present and potential growth of the lead-acid battery business, the potential hazards of having one outlet for a major proportion of production, the expanding U.S. secondary lead production, the hardships of stringent hygiene and environmental regulations and the future supply and demand outlook. The present poor condition of the U.S. zinc industry caused by an oversupply of zinc metal - mostly in Europe - is discussed and also the shifting markets influenced by the automotive programs to reduce the weight of cars and the continuing high mine production due to the mixture of metals contained in the massive sulphide deposits which contain a major portion of the zinc metal reserves. This is all tempered by technical advances in die casting and the emphasis on the protecting of steel with zinc to prolong its useful life. The mining and metallurgical laboratory, as we understand the term in this country, is a place .in which mechanical and chemical working-tests are made on ores, fuels and furnacematerials. It is of quite recent origin. The first laboratory of this kind to be used in connection with teaching was put into operation in 1871 at the Massachusetts Institute of Techilo1ogy. † The idea had already existed in the mind of President W. B. Rogers when he wrote, in 1864, his pamphlet 'on " The Scope and Plan of the School of Industrial Science of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology;" but several years elapsed, and an extended visit to the mines and mills of Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California was required before this idea could take a form adapted to the purposes of original research as well as of instruction. The laboratory was given from the first into the charge of Prof. R. H. Richards, who, by improving its methods and enlarging its scope, has brought it to the position which it occupies to-day as the leading representative of its class. In the above ?o represents the instantaneous strain on loading, ?t the limit of transient creep, ?S the steady-state creep rate, t the time, and ? a constant leading to the exhaustion rate of transient creep. It was noted that this equation was similar in form to that proposed originally2 by McVetty. This type of equation was also suggested by Andrade and Aboav3 in studies of the shear strain of cadmium. Calculation of the constants ?o, ?t, ?, and ?s, in Eq. [ l] is somewhat involved due to the slight complexity of this relationship. In the paper by Garofalo a computer approach based on a least-squares analysis was recommended. Such an approach involves a trial and error solution but when a computer facility is available the difficulties in this calculation are of little consequence. It does mean however that the evaluation of this type of equation would become quite tedious if computer facilities were not available. Some recent studies have identified a fairly straightforward method for calculating the constants in the Garofalo equation. Geological Relations. In his second report upon the Geology of Alabama, Prof. M. Tuomey calls attention to a rock occurring near Florence, in the Tennessee valley, the composition of which is as follows: Per cent. Carbonate of lime,.. .. .. ..16.41 Phosphate of lime,.. .. .. ..14.19 Peroxide of iron,.. .. .. .. .36 Quartz and other insoluble matters,. .. ..68.72 99.68 This rock was referred by Prof. Tuomey to the Carboniferous, because he found the Carboniferous limestones always resting conformably upon it, whilst both rest uncomformably upon the underlying Silurian or Devonian rocks. The recent discovery in Tennessee of phosphate-rock of this age (or approximately so) has stimulated the search in Alabama for similar rich material; but our search has been, up to this time, unrewarded by the finding in quantity of anything of better quality than the rock whose analysis is given above. It is, however, in high degree probable .that the rich phosphaterock of Tennessee will at some time be found to have its counterpart in Alabama. Materials of several kinds, containing a notable quantity of phosphoric acid, have been found in Alabama in both the Cretaceous and the Tertiary formations, and for our present purpose they may be most conveniently considered in their geological relations.

Vanadium is generally spoken of as a rare element; but, even in the light of our resources as known a couple of years ago, this description could be accepted in a qualified sense only. In fact, vanadium is very widely distributed, being a constituent of most clays, while even caustic soda has been shown to contain almost regularly a minute proportion of it, although the quantity in each case is so small as to render impracticable the extraction of the metal therefrom with profit. The opening-up of a large deposit of vanadium sulphide ore in South America has put a new phase on the commercial outlook of vanadium, the technical value of which for the improrement of steel has been proved by rigorous scientific investigation.
