When the first batch of refined copper ingots was cast at Mantos Blancos in January 1961, eight years of exploration, development and metallurgical pioneering by Mauricio Hochschild & Co. had come to a successful conclusion. This Chilean copper deposit, located in the Atacama Desert 30 miles from Antofagasta, is now producing approximately 20,000 tons of copper per year. The Mantos Blancos deposit has been known since 1912 and various attempts had been made to work the high-grade zones before the present operation was started. The major drawback of the ore to any previous development was its chloride content which varies between 0.4% and 1.5% C1. Although the chloride ruled out the conventional leaching-electrolysis scheme, it did lend itself to the process of precipitating the copper as cuprous chloride.

Not so many years ago the interest of the average mining engineer in money matters-aside from his pay check or his consulting fees-was confined to the per-ton cost of mining and beneficiating ore and to the amount of capital that would be required to erect the plant necessary to carry out such operations on a prescribed scale. The so-called "business men" assumed that questions of marketing the products, of profits, and of dividends were in their exclusive sphere-matters too intricate or, perhaps, too practical for the mere engineer! In the case of a new enterprise, the promoter shouldered the entire responsibility for raising the necessary funds, and incidentally he got the lion's share of profits. In fact, he frequently profited handsomely even though the mine earned little or nothing. Occasionally the engineer turned promoter or entrepreneur--conspicuous examples are Herbert Hoover, D. C. Jackling, William Braden and F. W. Bradley- but by and large he remained in a sphere of his own. To what extent this condition of affairs has changed is difficult to say. The Institute of Metals Division and the American Foundrymen's Association will meet in Philadelphia Sept. 29 to Oct. 4. Many things of interest to the members of the Institute have been constructed and developed in the Philadelphia district since the last meeting in that city (1907), including the great plant at Hog Island, the new foundries at the League Island Navy Yard and the great foundries of the Westing-house Company at Essington. Invitations are being extended to foundrymen and industrial engineers generally in. England, France, Belgium, Italy, and other European countries, South American countries and Australia, to attend this convention, since the time. seems unusually opportune for holding a meeting of international scope.

THE necessity for slime elimination from valuable mineral and coal products has become increasingly significant within the past 5 years.1,2 Most of the mechanized mining and present beneficiation methods have resulted in larger tonnages of extreme fines, silts, and clay, commonly called slimes, processed by the preparation plant. Economics in turn have forced the plant operator constantly to lower the bottom size of effective beneficiation, necessitating an almost complete recovery of valuable solids regardless of particle size. When these important factors are considered, the need for an efficient slime removal method for fine solids becomes self-evident. Ordinarily slimes have been classified as ranging from 75 microns, or 200 mesh, down to colloidal dimensions of less than one micron. At the same time there is general agreement that the most troublesome slimes are primarily clays, silts and extreme fines, so that the actual top size may be placed at approximately 30 to 40 microns. This immediately restricts any desliming operation to classification, as screening or other methods would be both uneconomical and grossly inefficient at such dimensions. It was found that a critical boron content exists which yields the maximum boron-hardenability effect in hypoeutectoid steels, as was predicted from the mechanism proposed in a previous paper. The hardenability of boron steels with boron contents between 0.00005 and 0.0017 pct was dependent on the boron content, austenitizing temperature, quenching temperature, and austenite grain size. The effects of these variables on hardenability can be explained by the mechanism previously proposed for the boron effect. A MECHANISM has been proposed to explain the effect of boron on the hardenability of steel.' ATTEMPTS have been made to predict the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mix-tures1-5 but these methods have not been extended to the higher pressures and tem-peratures that are currently encountered in some producing formations. Furthermore, the methods of prediction at present avail-able have not been tested in a sufficient number of cases to ensure their applica-bility to all naturally occurring hydrocar-bon mixtures, even at the lower pressures and temperatures. For these reasons the behavior of a number of hydrocarbon mix-tures from a field in which the subsurface pressures are above 4500 lb. per sq. in.? and the temperatures are in the neighbor-hood of 250°F. was investigated.

On account of the possibility of isolating carbides in steel it is generally assumed that the electrode potential of iron carbide is more noble than that of ferrite.1,2,3,4,5 Differences from 0.032 V1 to 0.4 V4 have been recorded. However, it is important to realize that the more noble behavior of cementite in relation to ferrite is not an issue of thermodynamics but of reaction kinetics. Theoretically, cementite is less noble than ferrite, which is a direct consequence of its thermo-dynamic instability. The conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small, isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may not be able to adopt the practice of large mines because of necessary capital expenditures for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and . shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has not yet been developed. Conventional Drill Bit in Use That drilling speed increases as the bit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests carried out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8-in. steel show that when bit sizes are reduced from I½ in., I3/8 in., and I3/16 in-; to I3/8 in., I1/4 in.., and I1/8 in., respectively, the volume of the hole is I 5 per cent less and the drilling speed 49 per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3 in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to I,826 in., a difference of o.25I in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and 14° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr charac1erist.i~~) by some mines4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and 14° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as call be forged economically. Shop practices and costs have been discussed in earlier paper.5,6 The method by which the radii for the special dies used for forging bits of different gauge diameter are obtained so that the points and reaming edges cut circles of the same diameter has been discussed by Hibbert. The object of this investigation was to determine with a vertical magnetic variometer the extent of the titaniferous ore deposit that occurs not far from Ivry in Terrebonne County, Quebec, about 70 miles north of Montreal. The Ivry mine, on lots 37 and 38 of range V, Beres-ford township, Quebec, is one of the largest and most accessible to transportation of the deposits of ilmenite in Quebec. The ore consists of an aggregate of ilmenite anhedra serving as host for numerous fine plaques of hematite. No magnetite is known from any occurrence near this lot, and in this way the deposit differs from many others that contain a large percentage of magnetite with the ilmenite. The deposit at Ivry thus has much lower magnetic susceptibility than those containing abundant magnetite, and a sensitive magnetometer was necessary for the work, although a body of magnetite with ilmenite about a mile from the Ivry mine was successfully prospected with a dip needle. The principal orebody is exposed in a quarry known as the Ivry mine, from which about 16,000 tons of ore have been shipped. Small exposures of ilmenite isolated by drift serve to show the presence at the surface of some of the bodies indicated by the magnetometer, but most of the hill is covered with glacial till and second growth hardwood. At the lower levels the till gives place to fluvioglacial sands and gravels from which the forest has been cleared. The increasing thickness of the sand and gravel as the hill descends makes the tracing outward of the deposits from the rocky knob of anorthosite a difficult matter. Within the orebodies too, some masses of anorthosite persist, which may account for some local irregularities. Fig. 1 is a photomicrograph, taken by reflected light, of a typical specimen of the ore. The dark patches are hematite and the light parts are ilmenite No trace of magnetite was found. The mean of four analyses quoted by Robinson1 is: titaninm, 19.26 per cent; iron 45.41 per cent. The general program of the Federal Bureau of Mines on the study of alloys made with electrolytic manganese has been extended to copper-manganese-aluminum alloys. The initial results of the work are presented in this report and concern a determination of the mutual solubilities of these three metals to form the alpha solid solution. The principal studies of this system, reported in the literature, have been focused on the Heusler alloys containing ro to 30 per cent Mn with 9 to 15 per cent Al. These investigations concern the ferromagnetic properties and the determination of the crystallization contours, with little emphasis on the phases present in the solid state outside of this area. Heuslerl recognized a breakdown of the beta solid solution of the magnetic alloy, which he says decomposes into the alpha, beta, and gamma phases of the copper-aluminum system, somewhat modified by the presence of manganese. Rosenhain and Lantsberry2 examined alloys ranging up to 10 per cent Mn and 10 per cent A1 but were unable to reach definite conclusions concerning the phase boundaries in that area. Krings and Ostmann3 made magnetic studies and examined the system by thermal analysis. They present contours of the liquidus surface but do not place any of the phase boundaries. Corson4 has drawn a hypothetical boundary for the alpha field with few, data to support such construction. The binary systems involved have rcceived considerable attention by numerous investigators, and their general features are well established. The copper-ahminum system (Fig. I) has been thoroughly examined by Stockdale,5 who places the limit of solubility of aluminum in copper at 7.4 per cent at the liquidus and 9.5 per cent at room temperature. Smith6 established the eutectoid temperature at 570°C. by a study of isothermal decomposition of the beta phase. The copper-manganese system (Fig' ') has been recently reviewed by Dean and CO-WorkersS.7 Using high-purity alloys,

For many years the City of Prescot, about 8 miles northeast of Liverpool, has been the home of British Insulated Cables, Ltd., one of the largest wire mills and manufacturers of electrical equipment in England. Since this location is close to the industrial center of the country and the seaboard, with good railroad transportation facilities, it was a logical site for the new refinery. Early in April, 1932, the writer was called upon to prepare a preliminary layout and estimate of cost of the proposed plant, and shortly afterward, following a discussion of these figures with officials of British Insulated Cables, in England, the decision was reached to proceed immediately with construction of the plant. The refinery was built by British Insulated Cables, Ltd. Designing of the plant was started early in May, 1932, orders for equipment being placed as rapidly as possible. On July 18 the first steel was erected and the first charge was cast on Jan. 5, 1933. No difficulties of any consequence were experienced in starting the plant and the grade of copper produced was quite satisfactory after the first charge. The initial capacity desired was 2500 tons of refined copper per month. Since only one furnace was to be built, it was necessary that it should have sufficient reserve capacity to catch up after unavoidable shutdowns. It was also necessary to lay out the plant so that it would operate efficiently at this tonnage and at the same time permit expansion in the future, if necessary, to several times its original capacity. In order to meet these conditions and also to take full advantage of the space available, the layout shown in Fig. 1 was adopted. The principal plant structures are a blister storage aisle, casting building, wire-bar storage building and a coal-pulverizing building. Additional smaller structures include a brick and charcoal shed, pumphouse, drill room, water-cooling tower, clay-preparation shed, substation and plant office. Incoming blister is received in either broad-gage railway cars or steam motor lorries in the blister storage aisle, unloaded by overhead electric crane to narrow-gage cars, weighed and sampled, then either sent directly to the furnace or placed in storage. The first presentation of this paper was before the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section of the Institute in May, 1914, after which a committee was selected to verify and add to the data contained in the original paper. The author is indebted to G. W. Engel, H. W. Montz, R. V. Norris, and H. H. Otto, of this committee, for additional information. I also wish to acknowledge the courtesies extended me by a number of the mining companies for information relative to accidents, systems of proving, and mining practice. The paper should bring forth additional criticism and recommendations, which will be of value in establishing future practice relative to this subject. Throughout the northern anthracite field of Pennsylvania glacial and alluvial deposits of sand, gravel, and clay exist in varying quantities. The extent and character of these deposits are described by N. H. Darton in Bulletin 45 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, entitled, Sand Available for Filling Mine Workings in the Northern Anthracite Basin. It is estimated that the northern field contains 10,000,000,000 tons of these deposits, or a sufficient quantity to cover the 176 square miles of coal area to a depth of about 25 ft. These deposits of sand, etc., overlying the coal measures attain a maximum depth of more than 300 ft., and are usually saturated to such an extent as to render them semi-fluid. It is this condition of fluidity that limits the mining of coal seams cropping in or in close proximity to these deposits, and it is in the interest of safer and more efficient mining methods under these conditions that the study of this subject is here presented. The dangers incident to mining under deep deposits of sand have long been realized by operators in the northern anthracite field, and much has been done to prove the contour of the rock and vein croppings underlying these water-bearing deposits of sand and gravel. Although, as far as we know, the accidents of the past have not resulted in the loss of life, except in two instances, yet nearly all were attended with more or less miraculous escapes of men working in the vicinity of the breaks, so that the probable existence of pot holes, etc.,

THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. had an orebody at Miami, Ariz., of close to 100,000,000 tons of low-grade copper ore, and the method of mining this ore most profitably was of great importance. The selection of a method was practically limited to a "top-slicing," a "shrinkage-stope" or a "caving" method. The "top-slicing" method would give a high extraction of the developed ore, at a high mining cost, and the ?shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods ) a lower extraction of, the developed ore, at a lower mining cost. ORE-DRAWING TESTS To decide on the method to be used it was necessary to know about what extraction of the ore could be obtained by the "shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods. As no definite information regarding the question was available at the time, C. E. Mills, the general manager, thought that some information could be obtained by experimenting in drawing ore, covered with capping, from an experimental box. Some work had already been done along these lines by W. C. Browning for the Inspiration Copper Co. and by myself for the Live Oak Development Co. The idea was to represent as nearly as possible, in the experimental box, the conditions within an area of caved stopes of caved ore all ready for drawing. That is, the area was supposed to represent a semibroken mass with the capping above it in the same condition and ready to follow the ore downward as it was drawn out of the chutes under the ore. To represent the above condition, in the experimental box, crushed ore from the mine was placed in it to a given height, and red barren capping from the mine was placed on top of the ore.

As the Appalachian mountains reach their maximum development in western North Carolina, we find also in that region indications of extensive dynamic disturbances and alterations undergone by the rocks in' connection with these mountain uplifts. Among the minor results of these changes have been the formation of numerous dikes or a veins " of exceedingly coarse granitic materials, which in some places are mined for the mica which they contain, and in other places are quarried for kaolin. These dikes are filled with quartz, feldspar, and mica, in varying proportions, very coarsely crystallized. Sometimes the mica (generally muscovite), sometimes the feldspar (generally albite or orthoclase) predominates. When the mica is present in considerable quantity, and in large crystals, the dike is usually spoken of as a mica-vein, and is often worked for mica. Sometimes these crystals of mica occur on one side or the other; sometimes on both sides; and sometimes they are largely concentrated toward the middle of the vein, or, it may be, distributed throughout the dike with a considerable degree of uniformity. In many cases the crystals of mica are too small and few to permit the working of the vein as a micamine ; in other cases, very little mica is present, and the feldspar constitutes the larger part of the material. This feldspar of the dikes undergoes, through the weathering action of the atmosphere, certain chemical changes, resulting in its alteration from feldspar into kaolinite—the kaolin of commerce. These dikes vary considerably in size, ranging from a few inches to several hundred feet in thickness, and up to many hundred yards in length. They are generally parallel to the schistosity of the crystalline rocks, which, however, in some cases, they cross at varying angles. The kaolin in those dikes which occur in the Unaka or

The behavior of steel after overstrain and at moderate temperatures is fairly well known. It has been made the subject of much investigation, and our knowledge is clear and definite on many points. The ultimate raising of the elastic limit, after moderate overstrain, and the consequent lowering of the ductility, seem to be well established. It is also well understood that the immediate effect of overstrain is to lower the elastic limit, possibly to zero, but that if not interfered with, this limit will subsequently rise higher than before. The " tests after moderate temperature," reported in this paper, were undertaken to verify the above statements for the particular steel under investigation, and also to determine, if possible, the total time required for complete recovery from this state of overstrain. The behavior of overstrained steel at temperatures at or below 32" F. is not so well known. Tests made by Prof. E. G. Coker, at McGill University,' show that steel, overstrained and subjected to cold, will remain in a state of overstrain for an indefinite period. I am not aware of any other published results of tests along this particular line. The effect of time and temperature on the recovery of steel from overstrain was made in 1902-3 the subject of some investigation in the laboratories of the College of Civil Engineering of Cornell University. A general plan was outlined in connection with the regular courses of instruction in testing of materials; but the press of routine work and the demands of the schedules on the time of the students were so great as to presage long delay in the completion of the work. THE occurrence of the (100) [lOO] or "cube" texture upon annealing of cold-rolled copper has been much investigated.' The conditions favorable for its formation were found to be a high final annealing temperaturez or long annealing time," a high reduction of area in cold rolling prior to the final anneal,' and a small penultimate grain size." The effects of penultimate grain size and of rolling reduction were found by Cook and Richards4 to be interrelated in such a way that any combination of them giving lower than a certain value of the final average thickness of the grains in the rolled material leads to a fairly complete cube texture with a given final annealing time and temperature. Also, according to the same authors, at a higher final annealing temperature a larger average rolled grain thickness, i.e., a lower final rolling reduction, is sufficient than at a lower temperature. These somewhat involved conditions can be understood readily on the basis of recent results obtained at this laboratory. Hsun Hu was able to show recently by means of quantitative pole figure determinations that the rolling texture of tough pitch copper, which is almost identical with that of 2s aluminum: may be described roughly as a scatter around four symmetrical "ideal" orientations not very far from (123) [112]. In the case of aluminum, annealing leads to retain-ment of the rolling texture with some decrease of the scatter around the four "ideal" orientations, and to the appearance of a new texture component, namely the cube texture." A microscopic technique, revealing grain orientations by means of oxide film and polarized light, showed that the retainment of the rolling texture is achieved through two different mechanisms operating simultaneously, namely "re-crystallization in situ," and the formation of strain-free grains in orientations different from their local surroundings, but identical with that of another component of the rolling texture. Thus, a local area in the rolled material, having approximately the orientation of one of the four "ideal" components of the texture, partly retains its orientation during annealing, while recovering from its cold-worked condition, and it is partially absorbed at the same time by invading strain-free grains of an orientation approximately corresponding to that of another "ideal" texture component. The reorientation here, as well as in the formation of the strain-free grains of "cube" orientation, may be described as a [Ill] rotation of about 40°, see Fig. 1 of ref. 6. The preferential growth of grains in such orientations is a result of the high mobility of grain boundaries corresponding to this relative orientation.' " It appears very likely that in copper the mechanism of the structural changes during annealing is similar to that observed in aluminum (except for the much greater frequency of formation of annealing twins in copper). In both metals the new grains of cube orientation have a great advantage over the new grains with orientations close to one of the four components of the rolling texture. This advantage stems from their symmetrical orientation with respect to all four retained rolling texture components of the matrix; they are oriented favorably for growth at the expense of all of these four orientations. As a result, the growth of the "cube grains" is favored over the growth of the others, as soon as the new grains have grown large enough to be in contact with portions of the matrix containing elements of more than one, and preferably of all four component textures. It is clear that this critical size is smaller and, therefore, attained earlier in the annealing process if the structural units, such as grains and kink bands, representing the four matrix orientations are smaller, i. e., if the average thickness of the rolled grains is smaller. Hence, for a given annealing time and temperature, a smaller penultimate grain size and a higher rolling reduction both tend to increase that fraction of the annealing period during which the above condition is satisfied. Consequently, the percentage volume of material assuming the cube orientation increases. The same is true also for increasing time and temperature of annealing when the penultimate grain size and the final rolling reduction are constant, since the average size attained by the new grains during annealing increases with the annealing time and temperature. For the same reason, at higher annealing temperatures a given volume percentage of cube texture can be obtained with larger rolled grain thickness (larger penultimate grain size, or smaller rolling reduction) than at lower annealing temperatures. The well-known conspicuous sharpness of the cube texture may be interpreted as a result of the fact that selective growth of only those grains is favored that have an orientation closely symmetrical with respect to all four components of the deformation texture and exhibit, therefore, a high boundary mobility in contact with each. The effect of alloying elements in suppressing the cube texture, as described by Dahl and Pawlek,' appears to be associated with a change in the rolling texture. For face-centered cubic metals, such as copper, which do exhibit the cube texture upon annealing, the rolling texture is always of the type described above, i. e., scattered around four "ideal orientations" of approximately (123) [112]. The addition of certain alloying elements, such as about 5 pct Zn or 0.05 pct P in copper, has the as yet unexplained effect of changing the rolling texture into the (110) 11121 type. This texture consists of two fairly sharply developed, twin related components. In such cases, as in 70-30 brass and in silver, the annealing texture again is related to the rolling texture by a [lll] rotation of about 30°, however, because of the different rolling texture to start from, it has no cube texture component. At higher temperatures, both in brassm and in silver," grain growth leads to a further change in texture: A [lll] rotation of the same amount, but in reversed direction, back to the original rolling texture.

Lightly deformed columbiun single crystals which contained only parallel hoins or purullel and intersecting trains were annealed at 1000' and 1600"C. No re-crystallizntion occurred in specimens hawing only parallel twins. Only noncoherent twin boundaries nzipated at 1000°C but both coherent and noncoherent ones moved al 1600°C. Recrystallization occurred within a few minutes at twin intersections at 1000°C. The orientation 01 the recrystallized grains differed front that of both the matrix and deformation twins, but could he derired by (110) and/or(112) rotations. ALTHOUGH twinning in metals has been extensively studied, there have been no definitive studies of the annealing behavior of crystals containing deformation twins. Some effects observed after annealing deformation twins have been summarized by Cahn1 and Hall2. Any or all of these phenomena are observed: 1) The twins may contract so that the sharp edges of the lens become blunted, and eventually the twin may disappear entirely. 2) The twins may balloon out at an edge, giving rise to a large grain having the same orientation as the twin. 3) The specimen may recrystallize; i.e., new grains are nucleated and grow at the expense of the twins and the crystal immediately adjoining the twin. Such grains have orientations which are not present before. Contraction has been observed in iron,3 titanium,3, 4 beryllium,5 zinc,8, 7 Fe-A1 alloy,' and uranium.9 Long anneals at high temperatures are required to have any appreciable effect in these metals and only thin twins are absorbed. Lens-shaped twins are absorbed from the edges: the thin, almost parallel-sided twins are usually punctured in several places and each piece contracts independently. Absorption is very gradual and no sudden cooperative jumps have been observed. The expansion of a twin into a larger grain of identical orientation is unusual, but such growth has been observed in iron,"'" zinc,6 and uranium." Crystals which have been deformed simultaneously by slip and twinning recrystallize first in the area adjacent to the twin. New grains appear faster where the twins intersect: but isolated twins, especially if thick, can also give rise to new grains. This type of recrystallization occurs in zinc.6, 7, 12, 13 and beryllium.14 Reed-Hill noted, in a single crystal of magnesium, the nucleation of a recrystallized grain at a twin intersection which had the same orientation as the second-order twin and which grew into the highly strained matrix.15 Short-time annealing has been reported to cause no change in the deformation twins in vanadium,16 columbium, 17, 18 tantalum,19 tungsten,'' and zinc.7 The purpose of this investigation was to note the effects of annealing on the coherent and noncoherent boundaries of deformation twins in columbium and to locate the nucleating sites for recrystallization. The orientation relationships, which the new recrystallized grains have with the parent crystal and the deformation twins, were also determined. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of columbium were obtained by cutting large grains from electron-beam-melted buttons which contained 10 to 50 ppm C, 10 to 100 ppm O,, 1 to 10 ppm H2, and 10 to 15 ppm N2. The crystals were hand-ground and chemically polished until all grain boundaries were removed. The specimens were mounted in an epoxy resin and a face of each crystal was mechanically polished on a Syntron polisher using Linde A and then Linde B polishing compounds. After all faces were mechanically polished, the crystal was electrolytically polished to remove all distortion due to cutting and grinding. Laue photographs were taken of all faces of the crystals to determine the quality and orientation of each crystal. The crystals were compressed about 10 pct at -196 C in a specially constructed compression cage with an Instron tensile machine. Each crystal was separated from the top and bottom anvils by teflon films which acted as a lubricant. With the specimen crystal in position, the entire cage was cooled to -196°C by being submerged in a Dewar containing liquid nitrogen. The crystals were compressed at a rate of 0.02 in. per min and the load was recorded on a strip-chart recorder. After deformation the crystals were mechanically polished on 600-grit paper and Pellon cloth with Linde A and Linde B polishing compounds. The crystal faces were chemically polished and then etched. The twin planes were identified metallographically from an analysis of the twin traces on two surfaces. Annealing was carried out by placing each crystal in a columbium bucket made from the same electron-beam-melted material as the crystal itself and suspending the bucket by a tantalum wire in a quartz tube. After a vacuum of 10-7 Torr was attained, a furnace at 1000" or 1600 C was raised into position and the crystals held for various lengths of time. The crystals were repolished and etched after annealing to remove any surface contamination. Approximately 0.010 in. was removed during this process. The resulting surface was examined metallographically for microstructural changes due to annealing. A microbeam Laue camera mounted on a Hilger Micro-focus X-ray unit was used to determine the Orientstions of the recrystallized grains. This X-ray micro-beam camera had a 0.002-in.-diam collimator and incorporated the ideas of both and and chisWik21 and Cahn.22
