INTRODUCTION Lake tapping is a method of blasting an intake into a body of water from below the natural water surface without first lowering that surface or installing a protective cofferdam around the tap hole. Lake taps are done by first excavating a tunnel almost to the water/rock contact and then blasting out the final protective rock plug at one time to allow water to suddenly inflow into the tunnel from the lake. This procedure can be done "dry" or "wet." In the dry method the tunnel is empty of water before the final plug blast while in the wet method it is partially filled with water. This paper describes a wet method lake tap as performed at Alaska Power Authority's Tyee Lake Hydroeletric Project in southeast Alaska. The Tyee Lake project is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Wrangell, Alaska, in a glacially formed valley called the Bradfield Canal. The project consists of a powerhouse located at sea level on the canal, a system of tunnels and shafts connecting the powerhouse to Tyee Lake at elevation 373 m (1225 ft), and an 129 km (80-mile) electrical transmission line leading from the powerhouse to Wrangell and then Petersburg, Alaska. Tyee Lake itself is a natural lake gouged out of the rock by glacial ice during the last ice age. The objective of the project was to tap into the lake and use the water as a source for power production. Many articles have been written describing peculiar and particular types of drilling. Little correlation has been made between the character of ground to be drilled and sampled and the type of drilling most desirable for procuring satisfactory samples. In development work, the engineer and metallurgist often desire the recovery of a sample in as physically natural a condition as possible, particularly when the sample must provide material for process tests as well as chemical and physical analyses. This paper describes the results of experimentation in drilling unconsolidated materials carrying titanium minerals in the Magnet Cove area, Ark. The drilling was most difficult in that the ground varied much in consistency, and it was vitally necessary to recover a physically natural sample. Ordinary churn drilling recovered a sample that could be analyzed chemically, but the sample was not in its natural state. The problem was successfully solved by utilizing and further developing methods used in the oil and clay industries.

This work was first undertaken for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1919-20, by C. E. Julihn, superintendent of the station at Minneapolis. Learning of the interest, in this subject, of B. F. Tillson, of the New Jersey Zinc Co., Mr. Julihn and Mr. Foley went to Franklin, N. J., and discussed the matter with him. A conference in Chicago, in November, 1920, was attended by Dr. F. G. Cottrell, who was then Director of the Bureau of Mines, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines and of the hlissouri School of Mines and Metallurgy; at this time a cooperative plan of work was agreed upon by the Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines. In February, 1921, Mr. 'Tillson arranged a conference on this subject at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, at which several technical papers were presented. In a paper, the Breakage and Heat Treatment of Hock Drill Stcels, he suggested a program that might be carried out in connection with the investigation of the problem. At this conference Mr. Manning, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, suggested the formation of an advisory committee to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards for prosecution of this investigation. On Feb. 20, 1922, a secoud conference in New York, at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of mlining and Metallurgical Engineers, was attended by representatives of various technical societies. At this meeting, the report of Nov. 20, 1921, of the Chiefs of Divisions of Metallurgy of the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards, was discussed and it was agreed: 1. That the survey recommended by the two bureaus should be undertaken, which survey would have for its object the ascertaining of the present status of the practice of the heat treatment of drill steels, the extent to which the breakage occurs, etc.; and 2. That a report should be presented, of the findings of those who made the survey, to the Advisory Board to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards. The Bureau of Standards assigned $4000 to the prosecution 01 a three-months' survey, which was carried out in April, May, and June, 1922, of about sixty mines

Iv 1897, Roberts-Austen(l)$ found an arrest in the thermal curves of alloys of 60 per cent. copper and 40 per cent. zinc. This break occurred from 450° to 470° C. Shepherd, (2) working in 1904, was unable to detect any change in the direction of the thermal curve. In 1911, Carpenter and Edwards(3) confirmed the work of Roberts-Austen and called this a eutectoid transformation of beta to alpha plus gamma. Hudson') in 1914, showed that the beta constituent could be produced synthetically at temperatures below the transformation point. He believed the change in the beta was polymorphic in nature rather than a eutectoid. The work of Matsuda(32) in 1922 demonstrated this break by thermal analysis, microscopic investigations, dilatation, electrical resistance measurements, and a thermoelectric study. He believed the transformation to be continuous from 300° to 480° C., and comparable to the A 2 transformation in iron. Later, in 1924, Andrew and Hay, with electrical resistance measurements, confirmed Matsuda's work. Imai(28) showed the transformation to be progressive and therefore a function of the temperature rather than the time. He stated that it was neither a eutectoid nor an allotropic change of phase. Atomistically expressed, it was a change, not of atomic configuration, but of atomic energy of some kind; and again it was compared to the A 2 transformation in iron. Imai believed that his analyses by X-rays led to the same conclusion. In order to study this change, at 470'C., in homogeneous 60:40 brass, Homerberg and Williams «0> and Homerberg and Shaw(41) quenched their material in iced brine to obtain the beta solid solution and reheated at various temperatures. At 200° C., a change in the microstructure and physical properties occurred. A fine-grained structure, which they termed alpha and which had the appearance of a sorbitic steel, appeared, with an increase in the tensile strength to 82,750 lb. per sq. in., and a Brinell ball hardness of 240 with 3000 kg. load. Standard Metals Corp.'s mining and milling operation at Silverton, Colo., has found that it can justify the use of a large computer system entirely on the basis of cost savings, and at the same time receive the benefits of speed, greater accuracy, and valuable data otherwise unobtainable at a reasonable cost. The Silverton operation consists of the historic Sunnyside mine and Mayflower mill, about 300 miles southwest of Denver, which produce about 700 tpd of a complex lead-zinc ore. This operation has not yet tried to use its computer for large, involved programs such as optimizing the efficiency of an operation, linear programming, or determining economic ore limits, although these are certainly within the capability of the equipment. However, there have been enough money-saving applications in the everyday routine to justify the use of this computer system, even before branching out into the more unusual or complex problems.

In view of the circumstance that very few important changes have been made within the last 15 or 20 years in the equipment of rod and wire mills, the description of a new process introduced by Grenville Mellen, of LleweIIyn Park, N. J., to take the place of the present laborious system of producing rods of lead, zinc, brass, copper, aluminum, etc., may be interesting to members of the Institute. This new process consists in the production of cast rods at one operation in a small continuous casting machine. The hot liquid metal is transferred from the melting crucibles directly into an endless chain of mold blocks in the machine, where solidification takes place, and the rod comes out continuously in a solid form at one end as long as the molten metal is supplied. The operation of these mold blocks so as to produce a solid rod of uniform structure constitutes an important part of Mr. Mellen's invention. The machine (Figs. 1 and 2), 12 ft. in height over all, 2 by 3 ft. in horizontal cross-sectional area, and 6,000 Ib. in weight, has a framework of cast iron, holding in position two endless chains of mold blocks, which are made in sections and join in center alignment. The mold orifice is made up of these mold sections, into which the liquid metal flows. The molding chains are composed of steel blocks, grooved on one face to form the molding cavity, and linked together with flexible joints. Each block is carried on four rollers which guide the chain around the end sprockets and carry it in its course through the machine. The accuracy of alignment requisite to the production of a perfect rod in the mold groove formed by these sections is secured by careful machine work, and by building the four ways, down which the alignment takes place, so that two of the sides are fixed permanently, whiIe the opposite sides are held to their position by spring pressure. The guides carrying the molds, while in casting position, are water-cooled square tubes. The length of this machine is somewhat indeterminate. A certain amount of both time and cooling surface is required to solidify the metal jn the mold; and one may either use a long molding chain and run it fast, or a shorter chain and run it correspondingly slower. Owing to a unique labor situation and other unusual circumstances, the mining methods of the Rand are hardly comparable with practice elsewhere. They are of considerable interest, however, and their importance is increased by the magnitude of the' industry with which they are identified, gold of $166,186,000 value, say 40 per cent. of the world's production, having been recovered from 25,701,954 tons of ore milled in 1914. In the sketchy remarks to follow, attention will first be drawn to some influential factors of general bearing, after which certain features at two mines of the writer's group will be referred to. It is hoped that engineers associated with similar or different conditions and practice will contribute to broaden the discussion. Before proceeding, recognition is due the generous assistance of C. E. Knecht and F. A. Unger. General Observations The principal mines are situated along the northern limit of an irregularly shaped geological basin, and extend in almost unbroken continuity over a distance of about 60 miles. As the boundaries are defined by vertical planes there are both "outcrop" and "deep-level" properties, all differing in size and in technical features. So much has been written in regard to the geology of the Rand that only a few pertinent features need here be recalled. Briefly, the ore deposits are profitably enriched portions of certain conglomerate beds or "reefs," rarely more than three, which are interposed between quartzite, or quartzite and slate, and lie so closely together that where more than one are mined they are dealt with as a working unit, although they may be stoped separately. Their collective extension is locally referred to as " the Reef." Along the outcrop the series dips more or less steeply, and in depth it flattehs, the latter tendency being most marked in the Far East Rand, where the bottom of the basin is nowhere so deep as to be inaccessible. At a time of great antiquity when our Yomato tribe had not yet found its way throughout the country, there lived in Japan barbarous tribes of the stone age, whose dwellings were vertical caves covered with roof's of twigs and weeds. In a cave lately discovered at the village of Morita, 10 miles west from the port of Aomori, there were found pieces of micaceous iron-ore and psilomelane, with oval holes pierced from both sides. Apparently these objects were regarded as ornaments or curios, without being applied to any practical use. Among the traditions given in the Nihonshoki, an ancient history of Japan, there is one relating to the mining industry. According to this tradition, in the mythological age Izanami-no-Mikoto gave birth to Kanayamahiko-no-Mikoto, god of mines, and Amaterasu-Okami (the sun-goddess) was armed with swords. It came to pass at one time that she concealed herself in Ama-no-Iwato ("Heavenly Cave"), and several gods made contrivances to entice her out. Among them, Ishikori-dome, a smith, made a mirror with copper obtained from the Ama-no-Kagoyama, by means of a pair of bellows known as the Ama-no-habuki, which was made of a deer-skin. It is recorded also that Susanb-no-Mikoto, her younger brother, observed the abundance of gold and silver in Korea, where his descendants were to reign, and urged them to provide themselves with boats to convey them across the Sea of Japan. FEBRUARY 15-18 will be the outstanding dates of the month for members of the A. I. M. E., for then the 141st Meeting of the Institute is to be held in the Engineering Societies Building, at New York. What with 41 technical sessions, the Annual Business Meeting at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon,, two sessions of the Section and Division delegates, minor committee meetings, and the many luncheons and dinners, the Dinner-Smoker, Informal Dance, President's Reception and the Dinner-Dance, the opportunity will be limited to do- more-than cast sheep's eyes at New York's other multitudinous attrac¬tions until the meeting is over. The technical program is diverse but well organized. The sessions are almost equally divided among the four days, with ten on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and 11 on Thursday. The meeting opens Monday morning with registration. Be sure to attend to this detail. Failure to do so may have its repercussions at the meeting and throughout the year.

SOME old-time views which have recently come into my possession have inspired me to record that part of the early history of Leadville, Color- ado, with which I am familiar, the years 1878 to 1882, in the hope that others will add to what is here mentioned. My first appearance in Leadville was in June, 1878, immediately after graduation from the University of Michigan, and I found a congenial and lively crowd of young men, already there. The old log hotel, at the corner of Pine and State streets, housed some distinguished guests in the summer and fall of 1878. It was my good fortune there to make the acquaintance of James B. Grant, afterwards Governor of Colorado, in July of that year, when we were both glad of the accommodation afforded by cots in the second floor loft of the hostelry presided over by Herman Hibschle. Grant was then building his smelter and our associates were Eddy and James, August R. Meyer, and Berdell and Witherell. The Grand Hotel-Harris and Walsh, pro- prietors-was the first-class hotel of the place; but in a very few months there were many competitors.

Conditions in underground mining are so variable that in approaching the problem of the economies effected by the use of pressure-treated mine ties and mine timbers, it is necessary to secure specific data for each mine. Facts must first be dug out to show the service life of untreated timber and the reason for its failure. Generally speaking, decay is the usual cause of failure, but in some mines mechanical destruction is an important factor. Occasionally the two causes combine to produce fail-urrs, and it is difficult to determine positively which factor is responsible. In making comparisons, it is always necessary to start with the cost in place and for this reason there must be accurate information covering the labor cost of installation and the labor cost of renewals. When treated timber is used, it is necessary to know the specifications for the treating process, whether the timber was painted, dipped, treated open tank, or impregnated under pressure according to standard specifications. It is also necessary to know the preservative used and the amount of the preservative that was retained by the timber after treatment. It is also well to know whether the timber was thoroughly air-seasoned before treatment or was green at the time it was treated. The kind of timber available, both untreated and treated, must be known and all of the factors listed above must be taken into consideration in the study of any problem. Variable Conditions A study was made recently of the untreated mine ties used by a bituminous coal company in two of its mines, which are about 20 miles apart. The mine ties were secured from the same sources for both mines. A careful check was made over a 10-yr. period on the life of untreated main-haulage ties, and it was found that in the mine where the haulage roads were on intake air the average life was approximately 5 yr., while in the other mine, where the haulage roads were on return air, the average life was 2 yr. IT is apparent that repressuring of the oil measures is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry, and is a matter that warrants the best efforts of the petroleum engineer charged with applying this method of operation to a producing property. Considerable attention has. been directed to repressuring in various California oil fields, such as Dominguez and Seal Beach, which have served to sell the more progressive operator on this idea and also to keep him sold. The projects that have received most attention are in comparatively young fields where the fluid levels are high, the wells, perhaps, still flowing, where the wet gas production is of considerable volume, and where there is vital need of immediate conservation of gas, which otherwise would be blown to the air. The new State of California Gas Law, which prohibits the waste of gas, has served to interest the oil industry in -means of conserving the gas that is now being blown to the air because of lack of markets. This vitally affects the operator in the older, well-depleted oil fields of the state, because in many cases he has a limited market for gas, on account of the flush production from the more active oil fields. While the waste of gas is relatively small in these older fields, such as the Midway-Sunset area, it now attains considerable importance, since under the new State Gas Law it must be put to some beneficial use. Repressuring in the older fields of California has not received the attention of the petroleum engineers that is warranted by the present situation. This paper was prepared with the view of presenting the salient features connected with repressuring in the well-depleted oil measures of the older fields, and to show what results have already been obtained in these fields by injecting the unmarketable. gas into the sands, particularly in the Midway-Sunset field in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Other projects in the older fields of the state offer some supporting data in this connection, such as the Shields Canyon and the Brea Canyon fields.

POSITIONS VACANT The National Bureau of Standards needs men to fill metallurgical positions with salaries varying from $1200 to $2000, depending upon the training and experience of the candidate. Experience either in ferrous. or, non-ferrous metallurgy. Duties will be almost entirely of an investigational nature, in connection with problems of military importance. Qualified men are urged to send to the Bureau of Standards at once a statement of training and experience, names of references, acid minimum salary that would be accepted, so that they may he advised of appropriate civil service examination for which to file papers. Problems involved in applying wet scrubbers to gas cleaning coal dust from thermal dryers are reviewed. Careful consideration of all the elements going into a modem coal preparation plant is required in view of the increasing difficulty of applying suitable gas cleaning equipment. This problem arises not only from the presence of finer coals to be handled, but also from the pressures applied by both the general population and the plant operators to improve the standard of gas cleaning performance. The Peabody scrubber is presented by the author as a machine designed to help improve this cleaning operation. Wet scrubbing of fine coal from thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment to the fine particulate matter. Among them are: 1) Dust in gases leaving the thermal dryer cyclones is often extremely fine with high percentages of total dust loading less than 1p in size. 2) Flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulfur or higher. Therefore, comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3) Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas scrubber are continually being lowered, while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend. 4) Installation of a scrubbing system on thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore, the operating costs of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum. We have, then, the basic situation which calls for comparatively high cost stainless steel alloy wet scrubbers, which must be highly effective in removing coal fines particularly in the 0 to 5-p size range. Further, the standards of scrubber performance are continually being raised towards the level where gas discharged from the scrubbers must be essentially free of any coloration due to residual dust. In view of the highly refractive nature of fine coal dust, residual loadings of 0.01 grains per cu ft or less are required to provide a color free discharge gas. In the present specifications under consideration a residual coal loading of 0.05 grains per cu ft would be considered color free, since the discharge gases are saturated in the range of 150°F. The steam plume acts as a masking agent at the point of discharge, and upon dissipation of the 150° saturated vapor stream, the effluent gas stream could be essentially color free. The specification under consideration calls for residual solids loading of 0.05 or less grains per cu ft, given a coal size distribution shown in the basic data in Table I. It is noted that the dust laden coal stream has a size distribution by weight of 33% in the 2 to 5-p size range and 55% in the 0 to 2-p size range. STEREOGRAPHIC projection has been one of the most useful aids in crystal-structure studies. With the increasing use of electron microscopy in metallurgy and other fields, stereographic projection is being used in many ways1 to interpret the results from electron diffraction patterns and transmission micrographs. For many of these applications, e.g., trace analysis, twinning, and so forth standard projections of various indices are required.

Noranda's Grey Eagle mine and mill, in the Siskiyou Mountains of northern California, began shakedown operations in the late fall and early winter of 1982. This paper describes some of the unique features in mineralogy, milling, and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.
