Mining operations have been carried out in British Columbia since the time of the first settlers in the area. The early developments were mainly small volume, high-grade operations, producing small quantities of tailings wastes. In these early days the nearest stream was a logical first choice for tailings disposal. Where streams suitable for accepting the tailings were not available or where streams crossing the International Border could not be used for this purpose, the nearest convenient land site was selected for storing the tailings. Old tailings waste piles exist at many locations in the Province and are readily evident, for example, in the Princeton and Hedley areas. Figs. 1 and 2 are photographs showing the present condition of two of these old tailings dams. [ ]

The electrolytic copper refining process is an excellent method for producing high-purity metal for electric conductors and other demanding applications. However, the process involves very high capital expenditure, especially the amounts of metals bound in the process. Efforts have therefore been made for many years to increase the production rate by increasing the current density, without impairing the quality of the copper. One of the approaches has been to diminish the polarization by mechanical means, while another was to "polish" the cathode surface by periodic brief reversals of the current. Reversed current electrolysis was first developed for electro- plating purposes and in 1952 Boliden AB and the Dept. of Electrochemistry at the Royal Inst. of Tech., Stockholm tested the method for copper refining with good results. However, no suitable electrical equipment for current reversal was then available. The thyristor-controlled silicon rectifier became available during the '60s and provided the scope for industrial application of the process and the first large-scale development was made by the Bulgarian copper refinery in Pirdop. Many copper refineries are now studying or adapting the reverse current process. Further lab and pilot investigations have been carried out at Boliden AB during the past 4 years and these were mainly aimed at studying the optimization of factors influencing the quality of copper. A production unit containing two tank sections with a total of 56 cells and equipped with a rectifier for cur- rent reversal has been installed and will be started during 1973.

The steady-state creep behavior of poly crystalline cad mi inn was studied over a temperature range of (1.56 to 0.94 Tm. Two distinct mechanisms were found to occur over this temperature range. They were described by: where and represerqt the minimum strain rates corresponding to the low- and high-temperature regions, respectirely. The two regions of constant acti11ation energy were connected by a transition region where the strain rate was controlled by both mechanisms acting in parallel. At temperatures below a transition temperature of about 0.7 Tm the agreement between the activation energy value for creep and that for self-diffiision suggests a rate-controlling mechanism of dislocation climb. For cadwzium, steady-state creep at temperatures above 0. 7 Tm appears to be controlled by another mechanism, perhaps involving the behavior of dislocation jogs. FRENKEL et al.1 studied the high-temperature creep of polycrystalline cadmium and reported an activation energy of 21 kcal per mole for the 0.5 Tm < T < 0.8 Tm range. Based on observations of creep rate at only two temperatures, a value of 22.1 kcal per mole was determined by Medbury. These two investigations were for the purpose of showing agreement between the activation energy for creep and that for self-diffusion, reported3 as 18.2 and 19.1 kcal per mole, respectively, for diffusion parallel and perpendicular to the hexagonal axis. Gilman4 investigated prismatic glide in single crystals of cadmium over a higher-temperature range of 0.72 to 0.93 Tm, and found an activation energy of 29 kcal per mole. He also reported5 an activation energy higher than that of self-diffusion for prismatic glide in zinc single crystals deformed at temperatures near the melting point. This value was in good agreement with those found for an equivalent temperature range by Flinn and Munson6 and by Tegart and sherby7 for polycrystalline zinc. These two independent studies also disclosed at lower temperatures another value of activation energy near that for self-diffusion. It would be expected from the creep results on zinc and single-crystal cadmium that creep studies on polycrystalline cadmium, extended to temperatures near the melting point, might yield an activation-energy value higher than the 22 kcal per mole value found in earlier studies. The purpose of this paper is to report the steady-creep behavior of polycrystalline cadmium over a temperature range of approximately 0.5 to 0.9 Tm EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The cadmium used in this study was obtained in the form of as-cast rods, 0.5 in. diam, through the courtesy of the Bunker Hill Mining Co. The material was of 99.995 pct purity, as determined by spectro-chemical analysis. The creep specimens, which were 0.250 in. diam by 0.400 in. long and annealed at 300°C for 45 min to produce a stable average grain diameter 0.25 mm, were tested in compression using an apparatus similar to that described by Sherby.8 The specimen temperature was controlled to within ±0.5°C with the help of appropriate constant-temperature baths. The applied stress was maintained within 1.0 pct of the desired value by the additions of lead shot at fixed strain increments. No barreling was observed over the strains encountered during testing. Isothermal creep tests9 were used in the study with only a few differential temperature tests10 run for comparison purposes. Steady-state creep data were obtained over a temperature range of 60 to 287°C (0.56 to 0.94 Tm) at five stress levels ranging from 28.1 to 140.6 kg per sq cm. RESULTS The minimum or steady-state creep rate may be described by an equation of the following form:" where i is the minimum strain rate, S is the structure factor, F is a stress function, Qc is the energy of activation, T is the absolute temperature, and R is the gas constant. The minimum strain rates obtained in this study for cadmium were recorded on a semilogarithm plot as a function of the reciprocal absolute temperatures for the various stress levels, as shown in Fig. 1. This figure shows a characteristic transitional behavior" with a parallel interaction of two mechanisms. It is obvious that the activation energies corresponding to the individual processes are insensitive to stress because the curves are parallel. The discrete activation-energies values for the low- and high-temperature regions for the various stress levels are reported in Table I, and were determined by the least-mean-square method. PART 1 INTRODUCTION All modern pelletizing plants are equipped with either the drum or the disc circuits. Choice of one or the other circuit is not simple and it is desirable to establish a firm basis for such a task. For a meaningful and a fair comparison it is necessary to have the two systems working in parallel in the same plant with the same concentrate under the same supervision. Furthermore, the comparison has to be based on a defined green ball quality and size distribution. BALLING CIRCUITS The LKAB straight grate plant at Malmberget, Sweden, was started up in Septenber 1973. It was designed for a 2.5 Mton annual capacity and was equipped with five balling drum circuits. During the first year of operation it was found that the induration plant had the potential for a higher capacity which required increased balling capacity. For this purpose it was decided to install a balling disc circuit complete with a roll screen. The reasons for selecting a disc were space limitations and LKAB&apos;s desire to gather experience on balling disc circuits. The disc circuit was started up in 1975 and was run in parallel with the balling drums in the same plant and with the same raw material and under the same operating personnel. The necessary conditions for a comparison were thereby fulfilled. The data for the size distribution and quality of the green balls were obtained on random sampling during one year of operation, so that all the variations which appear in a commercial plant are covered.

The orebodies of the Hecla mine are from 3 to 40 ft. wide, dip not less than 70°, and in most cases are nearly vertical. The Hecla and Intermediate orebodies are generally associated with a lamprophyric dike, usually about 2 ft. wide, but which attains a maximum width of 7 ft. The ore appears on either or both sides of the dike. The country rock is Burke quartzite with no definite walls and a tendency for nearly horizontal, but irregular, quartz stringers to run from the lode into the walls. This latter condition prevails almost entirely in the hanging wall, causing a natural tendency for portions of the wall to "offset" and resulting in an extremely heavy side pressure. The fact that there are no definite walls causes a great variation in the width of the stopes, as stringers will run into the walls for irregular distances. The ore occurs as galena in varying widths and grades. It is often necessary to mine a face having a " horse"&apos; of waste between two stringers of ore. This block of waste might be 6 or 7 ft. wide but with the Hecla method it is necessary to mine the entire face. In this case an effort is made only to shatter the waste, allowing for easy sorting underground. The Hecla mine requires a flexible system allowing for the extraction of ore from varying widths, with the necessity of close filling to give the needed protection from side weight. About 15&apos; per cent. of the material broken in the face is sorted as waste, either at the face of stope, or in the sorting plant. Shafts, Drifts and Crosscuts The outside dimensions of the shaft are 19 ft. 4 in. by 7 ft. 2 in. The shaft consists of three working compartments, two for the hoisting of ore and one for auxiliary work. The working compartments are 5 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 4 in. inside measurement. The rest of the shaft is used for pump column, electric cables, and ladderway. (See Fig. 6 for framing of timbers.) The shaft is about 700 It. from the orebody for topographical reasons. Solid formation was not reached in shaft for 80 ft. Timbers in this section became alternately wet and dry on account of seasonal changes

GWILLIAM H. CLAMER (Philadelphia, Pa.).-About 16,000 tons of tin is used annually in the production of white metals. The real reason for using the so-called genuine babbitt, which is a high-tin base babbitt, perhaps in the majority of cases, is that tin has always been. a high-priced metal and people naturally believe that what they pay a high price for must be good. Mr. Jones has shown that the common metal, lead, is a superior base for most purposes for Which babbitt metal is used. The addition of lead is often looked upon as adulterant to genuine babbitt, and specifications for this reason rigidly restrict the lead content. A sub-committee of the Society for Testing Materials, at the meeting in June, presented tentative specifications on babbitt metal, in which were included twelve formulas, containing from zero to: 20, per cent. of tin, and several containing from 65 and 92 per cent. British Columbia is enjoying a period of sustained high-level activity in all aspects and sectors of its mining industry. The total value of mineral production for 1962 was in excess of $229 million. This was the greatest total value attained for any year to date, exceeding the previous record year of 1956 by more than $40 million. It appears reasonable to expect that value of production for 1963, stimulated by increased production attained during the year, and by improved metal prices for some of the major products, will be substantially in excess of that recorded for 1962. Elsewhere in this issue appears a detailed report of prospecting and exploration activity in the Province. For the purposes of this review it is sufficient to state that the level of prospecting and exploration activity during the past several years has been greater than at any previous time and that there does not appear to be any slackening in activity or interest.

Many technical meetings were attended by mining people during the past year in which rock mechanics was either the main subject for discussion or was a prominent part of the program. Several universities continued to offer short courses in the applications of rock mechanics for practicing mining engineers. At the beginning of the year, the AIME Committee on Rock Mechanics achieved standing-committee status. It is to assume responsibility for coordinating all AIME activities in this area. Eleven professional societies are now participating in a newly formed Intersociety Committee for Rock Mechanics. AIME and its constituent societies has three representatives. Delegates from the Intersociety Committee will serve on the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics which is being formed by the national Academy of Sciences.

With such matters I was occupied in the second book; now I come to the third book, which is about veins and stringers, and the seams in the rocks1. The term "vein" is sometimes used to indicate canales in the earth, but very often elsewhere by this name I have described that which may be put in vessels2; I now attach a second significance to these words, for by them I mean to designate any mineral substances which the earth keeps hidden within her own deep receptacles.

Klopp et al. have reported data on tensile and creep properties of are-melted and electron-beam-melted tungsten. We would like to point out some similarities between their creep results and ours on are-melted and powder-metallurgy tungstenand offer some alternate interpretations of the data which lead to different rate-controlling mechanisms. Klopp et al. observed extensive transient creep in the 2250" to 3500°F temperature range where the acthetivation energy is 106,400 ± 3300 cal mole-1. They suggest cross slip as the possible rate-controlling mechanism since "cross slip may occur only by the movement of screw dislocations, and not edge dislocations, thus allowing only partial recovery of the strain hardening and resulting in a continuously decreasing creep rate, characteristic of transient creep.&apos;&apos; Our tests on are-melted tungsten and powder-metallurgy tungsten displayed an extensive transient creep stage in the same temperature range but they also displayed a steady-state creep stage. The stress levels and strain rates of the two investigations, 1.4 to 7 kg mm-2 and 10-7 to 10-4 sec-1 for that of Klopp et al. and 4.5 to 10 kg mm-2 and 10-8 to 10-4 sec-1 for those of Gilbert et al., are overlapping. The activation energy for creep of our powder-metallurgy tungsten is 105,000 cal mole-1. This close agreement with the value found by Klopp et al. suggests that the same mechanism may be common to both types of materials. It may be possible to gain some additional insight into the rate-controlling mechanism by applying the analysis made by conrad22 in terms of the activation volume. The value for the activation volume depends upon the dislocation mechanism and may be used to help differentiate between various dislocation mechanisms. The activation volume for cross slip is 10 to 100 b3. Values determined from our data were 130 to 220 b3 which are in better agreement with the range of 102 to 104 b3 for nonconservative motion of jogs. Values determined from data of Klopp et al. are 240 to 1040 b3. We suggest that the rate-controlling mechanism for creep in this temperature range may be nonconservative motion of jogs assisted by enhanced diffusion along grain boundaries or dislocations. This model requires an activation energy lower than that for self-diffusion as is observed. If this is the controlling mechanism, a higher activation energy which is closer to that for self-diffusion might be expected for tests conducted on specimens with reduced grain boundary area, i.e., larger grain size. In support of this premise we have conducted tests on speci- mens having one to three grains per cross section for which a higher activation energy of 130,000 cal mole-1 was observed. Also, in agreement with results of Klopp et al., a faster creep rate resulted from the increased grain size and probable decreased dislocation density. Further argument against the cross slip mechanism is based on the constant activation energy we obsserved over the range of 5.0 to 10 kg mm-2,21 whereas the activation energy for cross slip displays a significant stress dependence.23 In addition to this, the powe on the stress term for the strain-rate dependence appears too high for cross slip. The values for tungsten fall in the range of 4.5 to 7 (Klopp et al. and Ref. 21) whereas values of approximately 2 are observed in creep by cross slip for hep metals.24 At temperatures from 3300° to 4000°F, Klopp et al. observed an activation energy of 141,000 ± 4000 cal mole-&apos; which is less than that for self-diffusion, 153,000 cal mole-1, 25 and less than that reported for high-temperature creep of powder-metallurgy tungsten by Green:&apos; 160,000 cal mole-1. Klopp et al. suggested that recovery of strain hardening by dislocation climb is the rate-controlling mechanism in this temperature region. Actually an activation energy larger than that for self-diffusion is predicted by this model if the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus27 is taken into consideration. Klopp et al. attributed this lack of correlation to the compositional differences between powder-metallurgy tungsten used by Green and their own arc- and EB-melted tungsten. It is our position that the value of 141,000 ± 4000 cal mole-&apos; represents a transitional value between the higher and lower activation energies and does not represent a discrete mechanism of deformation. If the tests had been extended to higher temperatures the higher value of activation energy would have been observed as has been demonstrated by both our analy sis&apos;&apos; of isothermal test data by GE-NMPO28 and differential temperature tests28 on are-melted tungsten. The activation energies determined (170,000 and 160,000 cal mole-1) were greater than that for self-diffusion and are in better agreement with the value found by Green. The model of dislocation climb is associated with ; activation volume of 1 b3 according to Conrad.22 The activation volume calculated for the creep data of fou independent investigators in the temperature range where the activation energy for creep is near that for self-diffusion (Klopp et al. and Refs. 26, 28, and 30) is 110 to 2800 b3 and is in the range suggested for nonconservative motion of jogs. In the case of tungsten this mechanism may be preferred over that of dislocation climb. Sincere appreciation is expressed to Messrs. J. E. Flinn and F. L. JESSE SCOBEY The Foreign War Relief Committee closed its dispensary fund during the past month with a contribution to the American Fund for French Wounded of $1720.51, balance on hand, principal and interest, as a gift from the New York Section of the Woman&apos;s Auxiliary for pressing emergency dispensary work in France. The American Fund for French Wounded was authorized to cable this sun at once, in consideration of the fact that their existing dispensaries, including the one established by the New York Section at Briey, were in excellent condition, while their mobile dispensary fund was confronted by the most urgent need for work among the refugees now returning in pitiable condition and in great numbers to certain distressing centers. The committee sewing at Fund headquarters every week has had seven working days, with an enrollment of twenty: The average attendance was ten; largest attendance for any one day, thirteen; smallest attendance, eight. Interest in this activity is growing steadily and it is the intention of the committee to push the work vigorously for the next few weeks.

It can be useful to model the mean grade values for a metal in mineral deposits containing that metal as representing the extreme value tail of a lognormal frequency distribution for the concentration values of the metal in common rocks of all types. Results for copper and zinc in the Abitibi area of the Canadian Shield are compared to results previously obtained for the Canadian Appalachian region. The lognormal model is also applied to a set of 162 large gold deposits in the Abitibi area. In the second part of the paper, 1311 large and small gold deposits in the Abitibi area are modeled as discrete events. By means of a newly developed spatial clustering model it is possible to predict the variances of random variables for frequencies of deposits in cells of different sizes.

AN effect of orientation on the creep behavior of aluminum at 4.2 OK has been observed. Stress relaxation was measured in a hard-type tensile device after stopping the drive. From the spring constant of the device the load-time record could be converted to strain as a function of time. The strain sensitivity was 2-10-=, and the usual creep time of 1 min normally allowed a stress drop of about 25 g per sq mm. Further details of the apparatus and sample preparation appear elsewhere.&apos; It should be noted that neither stress nor strain were constant, so that quantitative comparison with current creep theories will not be made. Shear strain (y) as a function of time (t) was consistent with logarithmic behavior: y = A In t, where A is a constant. In some cases t was made as large as lo3 sec. In the results the quantity A divided by t (the resolved shear stress, which is the driving force for creep) is plotted as a function of strain prior to creep. The quantity A/t is thought to indicate qualitatively the ease with which dislocations can move during creep. In Fig. 1 are drawn tensile stress-strain curves and A/T-strain measurements for single crystals of three orientations: l(a) and l(b) for the maximum resolved shear-stress orientation, l(c) for an orientation 2 deg from [211], and l(d) for a [111] stress axis. The following observations were made: 1) At low strains the A/t values are nearly the same for the three orientations. 2) As strains increase, A/t drops most rapidly for [Ill.] and less rapidly for [211], while for the maximum shear-stress orientation it is constant during easy glide and drops abruptly at the termination of easy glide. 3) In stage 11, A/t values are again approximately the same for the three orientations. These observations are regarded as evidence that 1) the initiation of slip produces obstacles of essentially the same effectiveness for all of these orientations, while 2) the rate at which slip obstacles are produced before stage I1 is fully developed is strongly controlled by the amount of slip on more than one system. Creep data for pure metals at temperatures above those at which rapid recovery occurs (above about 0.45 the melting temperature) are correlatable by means of the equations and These correlations were applied successfully to data for aluminum, iron, nickel, copper, zinc, platinum, gold, and lead as well as for simple alloys. For a given metal, AH is a constant about equal to the activation energy for self-diffusion. THE early recognition that creep is stimulated by thermal activation prompted numerous investigators&apos;, &apos; to apply the same laws that are valid for the viscous behavior of liquids to analyses of creep data. To a good first approximation these laws are summarized by the equation were i is the creep rate; T, the absolute temperature; R, the gas constant in cal per degree per mol; T, the applied stress; AH, the activation energy in cal per mol; S&apos;, a constant dependent on the entropy of activation, the frequency of activation, and the contribution of each activation to the strain; and B&apos;, a constant dependent upon the size of the flow unit that is activated. Although Eq. 1 describes the flow of viscous fluids very accurately, its application to the creep of solids has been disappointing. Two reasons for the failure of Eq. 1 for creep are now known: First, the decelerating creep rates during primary creep demand that the internal structures of the metals are changing and that these changes might be reflected by changes in one or more of the three creep parameters S&apos;, AH, and B&apos;. Consequently when the conventional methods of evaluating these parameters are employed by comparing the secondary creep rates at a series of temperatures and at a series of stresses, the true effects of temperature and stress are masked because of simultaneous changes in one or more of the creep parameters. Second, as will be illustrated more fully later, three distinctly different types of investigations have shown that the stress term for high temperature creep enters the analysis as and not as t/T. This rather unexpected result points sharply to a significant fundamental difference between the mechanisms for the viscous behavior of fluids and the high temperature creep of metals. More recent extensive investigations",&apos;4 on the creep of high purity aluminum and several of its dilute a solid solutions have shown that where E is the total creep strain; temperature compensated time = for a constant temperature test; t, is the initial stress in a constant load test or the constant true stress in a constant stress test;" and t is the duration of test. • Eq. 2 is valid for either constant stress or constant load tests; but the total creep curve is difierent (i.e. the function, f, is differentl for each test. The fundamental origin of the validity of Eq. 2 is thought to arise from some equivalence of substructures in constant load creep tests at equal values of 0 or E. Both X-ray and metallographic examination revealed that practically identical lattice distortions and subgrain sizes are obtained for the same creep strain under the same load over wide ranges of test temperature.&apos; Furthermore the room temperature tensile properties following equal creep strains at different temperatures under constant loads were also identical, illustrating that identical substructures were indeed obtained.&apos; " A second type of correlation was obtained by differentiating Eq. 2 with respect to time, giving For the secondary creep rate, denoted by i,, But Eq. 2 reveals that 0, is a function of a, alone because the secondary creep rate in a given constant load test is always reached at a fixed value E,". Therefore where is the function that was introduced a number of years ago by Zener and Hollomon." Eq. 4 is not only valid for creep but will permit correlations between constant load creep and tensile data where e, is the rate of tensile straining and (TC is the engineering ultimate tensile strength.

IT is now generally i-ecognized that hydrogen is responsible for delayed failures encountered in high-strength steels,&apos;.&apos; and the hydrogen responsible for the embrittlement is introduced in the cathodic cleaning and plating operations to which these steels are subjected. Numerous test methods have been used in the past for the determination of brittleness in embrittled parts, namely tension? = notch-tension:&apos; impact,&apos; stress-rupture: a and bend tests.% * Several of these tests are not suitable for routine testing.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER is to lay a foundation of elementary theory that might be useful in the discussions which it is hoped will be evoked during this Symposium. It is not my purpose to try to expound the details of the most complete theories as that would be impossible in the time at our disposal and, even if time were available, would probably be of less usefulness than a discussion of the principles underlying the advanced theoretical treatment. I shall try to discuss the fundamental bases for these advanced theories. There exists at the present time very much less need for a detailed description of complete theory than existed when this Symposium was being organized. The reason for this is that a series of papers by L. R. Underwood has been appearing in the magazine Sheet Metal Industries. It is understood that this series will he published soon in the form of a book. Dr. Underwood&apos;s articles are complete, critical and well written and it would be hopeless to try to do better in less space. The need, then, is for a brief treatment of basic theory. The objective of any theory of plastic forming- is to enable one to calculate the force and power requirements for the process, and where the deformation is not uniform, to calculate the distribution of strains- In the formed object. We need as the basis for the calculation the relationship between stress and strain in the metal, particularly for the combination of stresses imposed by the forming process. We need to know the stress-strain curve for some simple state of stress, and we need in addition some theory

These notes are based on observations made while on a recent trip through the West, for the purpose of studying the practical operation of the ball-mill. The writer takes this opportunity to express his thanks for courtesies extended at the many plants visited as well as for the valuable data received: While there are several types of ball-mill on the market, particular attention will here be given to the diaphragm type, as the open-trunnion type, especially the conical mill, has been thoroughly discussed in the Transactions. There is a prevailing impression that the ball-mill is a recent development; however, ball-mills were used extensively in Montana and other western states for crushing ores for concentration as far back as 1808. Its present prominence is due in part to its recent successful application by one of the large copper companies. Without any reference to dry grinding, the first successful ball-mill for wet crushing, which is still in operation, was built 10 years ago.l This mill, designed by Erminio Ferraris for crushing Sardinian ores for concentration, is of more than passing interest. It embodies the peripheral discharge with grates, large forged-steel balls, and the principal features of the modern ball-mill. The results approach present-day practice, the chief differences being that the mechanical construction has been improved in the modern types. THE latest metal-mine accident report available for the United States is that of the Bureau of Mines for the calendar year 1919. Quoting from Table 20, p. 53, of that report, we find that there were 468 men killed, 7 permanently totally disabled, 321 permanently partially disabled, 7848 injured seriously (more than 14 days disability), and 23,330 of 1 to 14 days disability. We have no records to show what the average days lost per case of accident is, but the records for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. show that, leaving out the fatalities and total permanent disabilities, and counting those in which the lost time was one or more days, the actual days lost due to accidents, for the Butte mines and shops for five years, 1917-1921, were as follows: Accident Statistics, Butte Mines and Shops of A. The figure of $70 per case was obtained by dividing the total amount paid by metal-mining companies under Plan No. 1 of the Montana Compensation Law, for the first five years of its operation, by the total number of serious accidents for those years.
