The deposits described occur in a belt starting 1 ½ miles east of Juncos and extending 6 miles in a southeasterly direction. They are of the contact metamorphic type, being associated with a limestone and calcareous tuff that is interbedded with andesite tuffs and andesites which have been invaded by a quartz diorite intrusion. Of the fire occurrences examined, the largest can be traced for a horizontal distance of 2000 ft. No mining has, been done, but some of the outcrops lead to the belief that deposits of commercial size are present. IN CONNECTION with the gathering of data for a report on the geology of the Humacao district of southeastern Porto Rico during the summer of 1916, under the auspices of the Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, conducted by the New York Academy of Sciences, the writer had an opportunity to make a brief examination of the magnetite deposits of the eastern portion of the island. Inasmuch as these deposits have attracted some attention as possible future sources of iron ore, and as there is only scanty reference made to them in literature,1 a short description based on this reconnaissance survey was deemed to be worthy of record. The magnetite deposits of eastern Porto Rico occur in association with a belt of limestone, trending approximately S 53° E, which begins 1 ½ miles east of Juncos and can be traced for about 6 miles toward the coast. ONE'S lifetime does not usually offer the oppor-tunity to observe and be a part of the commercial development of an entirely new material. Petalite has been known for over a century, but at first it was presumed rare. However, it was found to be so abundant that it has become a new and extremely useful industrial tool. Mineralogy Petalite is a lithium-aluminum-silicate mineral. It was from petalite that J. A. Arfwedson first discovered lithium in 1818. The theoretical composition of Li2O • A12O8 • 8SiO2 is equivalent to 78.4 pct silica, 16.7 pct alumina and 4.9 pct lithia. The mineral in its known commercial occurrence is colorless to white and rarely gray, transluscent and rarely transparent. It is brittle, has a vitreous luster, and occurs usually in cleavable masses (fig. 1). It is classified as a di-silicate, but is similar in composition to the metasilicate spodumene, Li2O.-Al2O8-4SiO2 (table I). However, their specific gravities are quite different (3.13 to 3.20 for spodumene, 2.39 to 2.46 for petalite). Occurrence Petalite specimens have been reported in many localities; however, there are only three known countries having occurrences of commercial significance. The classic locality is Sweden's Utö Mines, which, although reportedly still containing considerable petalite, have been closed and are not expected to be operated in the near future. At Varuträsk, in northern Sweden, petalite carrying 4 pct lithium oxide is the main ore. In 1946 there was reported about 1000 tons on hand. However, the iron content was 0.60 pet too high for other than chemical use. Petalite has been reported in western Australia. At the Cottesloe mine, where small quantities have been reported available, it is produced in conjunction with feldspar. Petalite occurs in considerable quantity in the feldspar quarry at Londonderry, and it was estimated1 in 1943 that over 3700 tons might be available. The petalite in South West Africa was first discovered by F. J. Jooste, a lawyer by profession, in 1938. The following year he discovered a much larger deposit, and in 1948 another important discovery was made. These deposits occur near Kari-bib and constitute the only known commercial deposits. Their full extent has not yet been determined, but huge massive blocks of petalite of the purest grade, running into many thousands of tons, can be seen in all these deposits. To date, 60,000 tons of high grade, low iron containing ore has been blocked out in the major bodies. Mining for years to come will be confined to simple quarrying. ATHOUGH there are signs of improvement in the lead industry, conditions are still far from what we have been accustomed to call normal. There has been little to stim¬ulate research and those responsible for the finances of the companies have been inclined to discourage expenditures except where need was urgent or the prospect for immediate returns bright. In spite of this fact, improvements have been developed here and there which will be available as business conditions become adjusted. No publicity is allowed at present. The rising price of silver has had a tendency to increase the production of lead from argentiferous ores but the greatest interest continues to be in the secondary field. Practically all lead plants situated near large centers of population are treating scrap materials, particularly battery plates, the quantity of which is increasing with the improvement in automobile sales.

Dr. Dudley tacitly assumes the coefficient6 C, P, S, and M to be positive; and assigns certain valries to them, by means of which he redom t.he equation to the form I + Pa: = R, x being equal to cc + Es +Mm i Pp, or tjje uanjbe,. of so-called phosphorus units in the rail. But we do not have R directly given under constant circumstances. The varying weights (per engine, car, or train) and the varying epds, we must neglect for lack of data, and assume that in these rwpects the rails examined have been treated srlbstantially alike. But there remain the varying conditions as to track, which mnst he elirninsted. Dr. Dudley gives six clrlsses, four of which contain 8 rails each, and two 16 rails each. Beginning with the 6~st (tangent grade), take the mean of the figures expressing wear for that clam; and continaing tliis process through the other five, we obtain six expressions in quantity of loss 'by wear, which we assome tc, represent, in their differences, the varying conditions of the trarli, with respect to grade and direction. We now take the mean of these moans (giving double weight to the gmiip containing 16 ohwrvafieras). Williams numbers his acquaintances in the mineral industries by the thousands and h because his principal hobby is liking human beings, most of his acquaintancs are also his friends. Clyde is one of the many outstanding metallurgist, in the United States who started as a chemist. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1915 he was successively chemist for U.S. Smelting Refining and Mining Co., and at the Bureau of Mines station at Ithaca, N.Y. The year 1942 in Michigan was devoted largely to the development of fields discovered in 1941 but was also characterized by a great increase in prospecting for new productive horizons below the Dundee limestone. Some new fields were discovered but as yet these have shown few signs of being of major importance. Michigan's total production for 1942, of 21,754,000 bbl. of oil, as reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, was second only to the record year of 1939 when 22,799,000 bbl. of oil were produced. All important fields were prorated throughout the year, and it is obvious that without proration a new all-time high would have been established for the state this year. Approximately 9,000,000 bbl. of oil was produced from the field during the year, bringing the total accumulated production to the end of the year to roughly 11,750,000 barrels. Headquarters Field.—The Headquarters field, which started the year with ro producing oil wells, ended the year with 41 wells aid 1240 proven acres. Approximately 2,300,000 bbl. of oil was produced in 1942. Kawkawlin Field.—Although not a 1941 discovery, the Kawkawlin field has been actively developed on the 40-acre spacing plan during the last year, 42 producers having been completed, bringing the total number of wells at the end of the year to 77. Nearly 500,000 bbl. of oil was produced during the year.

As most of the industrial activity of Oregon is centered in the Portland area, the foundries there consume the bulk of the foundry sand produced in Oregon. Although a number of the larger towns scattered throughout the state have gray-iron foundries, the sand used by most of them is of local origin: The yearly consumption of foundry sand of all types for the past few war years in Oregon is estimated to have been approximately 40,000 tons valued at about $285,000, of which an estimated 18,000 tons was shipped in from the Ottawa, Ill., district for use largely by the steel foundries. Until 1945 much of the silica sand consumed by the steel foundries in the Pacific Northwest, approximately 50,000 tons in 1944, came from Ottawa, Ill. and surrounding regions. Although some silica sand was shipped in from Belgium in the past, none is known to have been imported in recent years. Early in 1945, a very promising high-grade silica sand being produced near Eugene, Oregon, was introduced, and all but two of the Portland steel foundries are using this new sand. Until a few years ago, the search for good local (Oregon) foundry sands was carried on largely by the foundry supply houses. Recently the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries has investigated a number of deposits and has carried on and fostered research on the most promising deposit near Eugene, about 120 miles south of Portland. High-grade silica foundry sand from this deposit is now being marketed in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The Eugene sand is one of the very few outstanding western steel-foundry sands. Field investigations by the Oregon Department show that there are relatively few deposits of sand in Oregon suitable for foundry use. A knowledge of the geology of the state makes this readily understandable. The only major primary sources of the quartz present in sandstones in Oregon are the intrusive masses of granite, granodiorite, and quartz diorite of late Jurassic or early Cretaceous age found in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestetn Oregon, a part of the old Klamath Mountain highland, and in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. Transportation militates against the development of any possible deposits of foundry sand found east of the Cascade Mountains in central and eastern Oregon because few railroads traverse that area. East of the Cascades, which separate western from eastern Oregon, many of the older sediments of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age have either been metamorphosed or contain much volcanic eruptive material, and even if some of the Mesozoic sediments are highly quartzose in places, they are in relatively inaccessible areas. All the Tertiary sediments there are of continental origin and contain much ash and other volcanic debris, for there was great volcanic activity during much of that period. IN THE year just past there were produced in the United States about 170,000,000 tons of sand and gravel. Much of this was pit-run material used for gravelling roads and as railroad ballast on lines that did not carry heavy traffic. But more than half of it was marketed as washed and sized, or graded, material. The methods used for preparing sand and gravel for the market have long been used in ore dressing and, as in ore dressing, depend on differences in the specific gravity of two substances or in the size or weight of particles. But many changes in the design and operation of plants and machines have been necessary. In ore dressing, the concentrate is only a small part of the feed; in sand and gravel washing, it is much the larger part of the feed. In addition, such close work as is needed when con¬centrating a metallic ore is not needed when washing gravel; the ability to put through a large tonnage is more important, and sizing, which is only a preliminary process in ore dressing, is an end to be attained. Rock crushers are found in most sand and gravel plants and they are used to break up the larger pieces from the deposit (known as boulders and cobbles) which are removed by a scalping screen. The crusher discharge is usually sent back to the scalping screen, the perforations in this screen setting the maximum size of the finished product.

The rapid increase in the use of pulvcrulent adsorptive materials in the so-called "contact filtration" process for decolorizing lubricating oils makes it desirable to consider some of the basic principles involved. The commercial methods and types of equipment now used arc fairly well known, having been extensively described in the trade journals. In spite of this very little has been published concerning the factors which must be considered in the selection of a process or of a decolorizing ing material. It is commonly understood that contact filtration more or less closely follows the laws of adsorption. These principles have been thoroughly drscribed by Gurwitsch.' The contacting of neutral mineral oils seems to be adsorptive in character and apparently follows Freundlich's law of adsorption which may be expressed by the formula: X = Color material adsorbed hy the clay. M = Amount of clay used. C = Concentration of color material after equilibrium. A and P = Constants for a given oil and clay. Oceanographers are tooling up. Back of the build-up is Navy defense work and private business. Business is dipping toes in the ocean gingerly and not sure whether the motivation is based on logic or intuition. The problem is that new business opportunities in the oceans could explode rather than evolve. The question is when. At stake for earthlings are food supplies, mineral resources, oil and gas, weather forecasting, navigational systems, shore erosion control and sewage disposal, as primary targets. "Twenty years ago, offshore oil seemed a remote possibility for economic exploitation but today it is a reality. It became a reality largely because of the development of practical ocean seismic equipment and drilling platforms. Today the oil industry is looking at submerged-type drilling rigs. Mineral exploration in the sea is more expensive than on land now primarily because familiar land tools are being modified for sub- marine work." These were the ideas expressed by C. G. Welling of Lockheed Missiles & Space Co., at one of the many meetings that have taken place so far this year on development of marine resources. Welling's views indicate the rationale of companies that have already invested in the sea. Many companies, including those in mining, have observers who caution, "go slow." The continental shelfs and even the deep ocean floor represent to the mineral industries the age-old, enigmatic confrontation-is this the time to move? To no other industry, except Defense, are the results of correct timing so vital.

Vanadium has recently joined the growing list of mineral commodities being exploited by surface mining methods. Union Carbide Corp. controls several vanadium deposits in central Arkansas near the city of Hot Springs in Garland County and the community of Magnet in Hot Spring County (Fig. 1). Two open pit mines, located approximately five miles southeast of the city of Hot Springs in the Wilson Springs area, have been developed for production during the past two years. Adjacent to the mining area the company has recently completed a 1,600-ton-per-day (tpd) processing plant to treat the Wilson Springs and Magnet Cove ores (Fig. 2). Although this operation constitutes the largest vanadium mining project in the United States, the open pit mines are of moderate size. A number of small to medium-sized surface mines will be developed during the life of the operation. This chapter describes the methods and practices used to bring these recently discovered vanadium deposits into production. PRELIMINARY EXPLORATION The vanadium potential of the deposits near Hot Springs and Magnet Cove was first investigated by Union Carbide Corp. in 1960. These areas have long been of interest for their varied mineral content and were previously explored by government agencies and private interests for titanium, columbium, molybdenum, and uranium. The year 1940 saw an increase of 20 per cent in oil production over the previous year—compared with a 16 per cent increase the previous year. In all, 25,790,380 bbl. were produced, an increase of 4,414,150 bbl, over 1939 and the largest production figure for south Arkansas since 1928. The older settled production continued to decline. Magnolia accounted for most of the increase, with aid from the other recent deep fields. During the year, 169 wells were drilled, 79 fewer than in the previous year. Of 131 wells drilled in proven fields, 18 were dry. Three of the 38 wildcats were pool openers. The drilling depth record was increased from 9028 to 9550 feet. Trend of Prospecting For the first time since 1936, the search for oil in the deep Smackover limestone slackened perceptibly; g dry wildcats ended in Smackover, 2 in. the underlying Eagle Mills; 7 penetrated Paleozoic beds, while 9 ended in Hosston, 2 in Glen Rose, 2 in Paluxy and 4 in Gulf. Geology The wells listed in Table 2 either resulted in the discovery of new oil pools or, because of their depth or location, afforded impor-tant stratigraphic or structural informa-tion. Fig. I is a general columnar and stratigraphic section showing the relation-ship of the strata within the Comanche series. The nomenclature shown was ac-cepted by the Shreveport Geological Society. It was subsequently published by Imlay,l who indicated probable correlations with other areas and presented evidence for the possible Jurassic age of the under-lying Cotton Valley and Smackover formations. New Fields Pouke.—On June 10, 1940, the Louark Producing Co. completed its No. I Sturgis, sec. I, T. 17 S., R. 27 W., in central Miller County, producing between 3583 and 3607 ft. in the upper part of the Paluxy forma-tion. The well flowed I00 bbl. of 3r.4' gravity oil per day through Ns-in. tubing choke. This discovery resulted from seismograph work. Six other wells were drilled in the area, none of which found production in the original sand. One of these wells is producing from a sand 50 ft. deeper in the section. The others were abandoned. No further development is in prospect. Production is from lenticular sands of the upper Paluxy; 45,556 bbl. had been pro-duced by the end of 1940. There is structural closure against a fault to the northwest. McKanzie.—The Atlantic Refining Com-pany's No. I Bodcaw Lumber Co., sec. 29, T. 17 S., R. 23 W., eastern central La-fayette County, was completed June 8, 1940, as the eighth and farthest west of the Smackover (Reynolds o6lite) limestone pools. The well flowed 10 bbl. an hour of 58.6' gravity distillate through an 1 1/64 Ma-in. tubing choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 8400:I.

EVEN the highest purity silicon available for semiconductor use contains significant amounts of donors and acceptors, usually aluminum, phosphorus, and boron. Aluminum and phosphorus can be removed from silicon by adaptations of the zone refining techniques' widely used with germanium. Removal of boron, however, has been a difficult problem. The approximate distribution coefficient for boron in silicon is 0.8, so that while zone refining is possible, it is not very effective in any reasonable number of passes. It has been found, however, that boron can be effectively removed from silicon by treatment of a liquid zone with hydrogen and water vapor.
