St. Joe Minerals Corporation, recognizing the need for improving the illumination of the working places in their mines, entered into a cooperative research agreement with the Bureau of Mines to utilize the Bureau's expertise in this field. Some similarity in the environment, in which coal and hard rock miners work, has allowed the application of developed coal mine illumination technology and equipment to be utilized in hard rock, room and pillar mines.

A study was made of the United States Bureau of Mines chlorine-oxygen leaching process for complex sulfide concentrates. The investigation sought to determine the kinetic order and mechanisms involved in the reactions between galena and sphalerite with chlorine. The influence of copper on the extraction rates was also studied. It has been shown that the rates of reaction of chlorine in aqueous solutions with sphalerite and galena are both zero order at 373 K with rate limiting step being the chemical reaction. Addition of cupric chloride increased the extractions of both lead and zinc.

The technology involved in the Sherritt process for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from sulphide concentrates and mattes is presented in a manner which emphasises the chemistry of the process. The hydrometallurgical process takes advantage of the differing stabilities of the various oxy-acids of sulphur from thionates through thiosulphates to sulphate. Some separations are based upon stability differences, some upon kinetic differences and some upon valence state differences and similarities The engineering and economic factors involved in hydrometallurgy are not discussed in either detail or depth.

The meaning and the utility of redox potential (Eh) measurements in sulfide flotation systems are examined. Since some preliminary plant Eh and laboratory flotation data were available, experiments were made to establish the pH range at which a platinum electrode might be used for such measurements without much difficulty in aerated systems. Triangular wave voltammetry was used to study the surface conditions of the electrode immersed in pyrrhotite suspensions at different pH. The measured Eh both at the plant and the laboratory is interpreted in terms of the experimental water-oxygen line.

Briefly, an open stope is one in which the ore is taken out and no filling is put in; the only support for the walls may be posts or pillars of ore. Such a method is limited to orebodies with strong walls and ore strong enough to stand unsupported over the back of the stope. Details vary and depend on the dip of the vein, mode of breaking ground, method of handling broken ore, and so forth. The examples given are the Beat-son, Birmingham district, Mineville district, and Cornucopia.

INTRODUCTION In the second quarter of 1979, Rapid Mining Co., Inc. ("Rapid") inquired whether Crocker National Bank ("CNB") would provide $4 million in term loan financing to help ("Dry Creek") acquire the outstanding shares of the Dry Creek Coal Company ("Dry Creek") in West Virginia. Prior to approaching CNB, Rapid had sought financing with the assistance of a financial advisor from a number of commercial banks without success. A summary of the initial terms requested by Rapid is shown in Table 1 compared with the actual terms on which the transaction closed. It is not difficult to note that the two sets of terms differ significantly. This is often the case when financing requests based on the expectations and vision of a mine developer are juxtaposed with more pragmatic requirements of a commercial bank. The "art" and fund of structuring financing plans for mining ventures (highly leveraged acquisitions or grass roots) comes in working with mine developers to arrive at a final financial structure that meets their objectives and constraints as well as those of the bank or other financial institutions providing much of the financing. Beginning with the terms requested by Rapid and ending with the terms that closed the transaction, this article briefly describes the process we went through with Rapid Mining. The Seller and Buyer The Dry Creek Coal Company was established in 1961, after its owner acquired the coal leases from Republic Steel. Republic has mined the primary coal seam from 1948-1961. Dry Creek was owned as a subchapter S corporation (i.e., for federal income tax purposes, income is taxed at the shareholder level) and had been run on a low key basis. Since the company had virtually no debt and limited cash needs, the owner produced primarily when rail cars were available and income was required. Output was therefore erratic as is shown in the top of Table II, but the result was a profitable little company with an attractive free cash position. Because the owner wished to retire and enjoy his wealth in a more readily spendable form, he had put the mine, with stated recoverable reserves of approximately 13 million tons, up for sale. In contrast, Rapid Coal's investors consisted of a number of investors of disparate financial situations. They had agreed upon a primary objective of income maximization and planned an annual production rate of 120,000 TPA which they and the current owner believed realizable. The Formulation of a Financing Structure Figure 1 presents a simplified overview of the sequence of steps taken in the financing process which lasted approximately three months from start to finish. Since banks see many requests for funding and considerble time is required to follow up on each, an important step was determining, after a brief review of the materials provided to us, whether the basic "eonomic entity" was viable. In this case, the size and quality of the reserves, the inherent operating cost characteristics, the sales arrangements, the management/labor situation and Rapid's principles all appeared to be sound enough to warrant investing the time necessary to do a thorough analysis of the project. Once this decision was made, the evaluation and analytic process shown in Figure 2 was initiated. The first and most fundamental concern of any banker is whether the loan will be paid back as scheduled from the cash flow generated by the project. The amount of debt relative to the owner's equity is of course crucial in such a determination. Before the debt/equity issue was addressed, however, a number of more qualitative factors had to be studied and if

The dictionary defines 'jargon' as "barbarous or debased language ". This description does not suffice. Quiller-Couch has said, it is "a kind of writing which, from a superficial likeness, commonly passes for prose in these days, and by lazy folk is commonly written for prose, yet actually is not prose at all ". The two main vices of jargon, he says, are "that it uses circumlocution rather than short straight speech", like the Babu who reported his mother's death by saying: "Regret to inform you, the hand that rocked the cradle has kicked the bucket ". Its other chief vice is that "it habitually chooses vague woolly abstract nouns rather than concrete ones", like the newspaper statement, "He was conveyed to his place of residence in an intoxicated condition", instead of saying, "He was carried home drunk". Jargon is "an infirmity of speech", it is not journalese, but akin to it. "Like respect- ability in Chicago, jargon stalks unchecked in our midst" and renders much technical writing ridiculous. It deals in periphrasis instead of going straight to the point, it loves the abstract rather than the concrete, it dabbles in words of sound rather than of meaning. Avoid it, despise it, if you purpose earnestly to write well. "In literature as in life he makes himself felt who not only calls a spade a spade but has the pluck to double spades and redouble." * Jargon is rampant in technical publications. Catalogues and other advertisements are conspicuous offenders, but with these the critic is not concerned, except in so far as such 'write-

Electrical model studies have been made of the effect of drainhole drilling on production capacity. Drain holes are those lateral holes which are sometimes drilled to assist in increasing the oil drainage into the main wellbore. The studies indicate that if the drainhole length i.r near 0.2 of the drainage radius, the increase in production capacity may be approximately 1.8, 2.08, trnd 2.33 for the case of one, two and four drain holes, respectively. If multiple drain holes are drilled, shorter holes are required to achieve a specific increase in production capacity than if one or two holes are drilled. To achieve increases in production capacities by factors near three it is shown that the drainhole lengths divided by the drainage radii must be approximately 0.64, 0.48, cnd 0.37 for the case of one, two and four drain holes, respectively. IN T RO DUCTION Kecent developments in drilling techniques have permitted the drilling of lateral or horizontal holes to increase the rate of production. The number of these drain holes may vary from 1 to 10, and they have been drilled laterally as much as 100 ft. Drainhole drilling at substantial depths is of recent origin but has been used in the Spraberry field of West Texas, the La Pas field in Western Venezuela, and certain fields in California. The diameter of the drain holes has been approximately 6 in. In drilling drain holes it is desired to know how much increase in production capacity may be expected, what additional benefit may be gained by drilling more than one drain hole, and what increase in production capacity may be brought about by lengthening the existing drain holes. In realization of the importance of lateral drilling, electrical model studies were made to provide quantitative estimates on the effect of drain holes on production capacity. ANALYSIS An electrical model was used in studying this problem. A wooden circular reservoir approximately 30 in. in diameter and 2 in. deep was filled with a dilute salt solution to a depth of 1 in. A copper band formed the periphery of the tank, and a copper wire was inserted in the center of the tank to represent the well. The drainage radius divided by the well radius was equal to 500. A diagram of this type model is shown in the inset of Fig. 1. An electrical potential was applied to the wire well and copper band at the periphery to determine the flow of current. Following this measurement copper wires of various length were soldered to the vertical wire well in such a manner as to simulate lateral wells drilled into the reservoir. Multiple lateral holes of various lengths were studied by varying the number and length of copper wires soldered to the vertical wire well. All multiple lateral wells were located symmetrically about the vertical well. The effect on production capacity by drilling an infinite number of lateral holes was studied by replacing the lateral hole with a copper disk. For each condition the flow of current was measured and compared with the flow of the vertical well only. The model which is thus described provides the steady state increases in production capacity which may be expected in some cases. The data conform to those which would be observed for a uniform homogeneous reservoir. The data may have primary application to those reservoirs producing above the bubble point. It is realized that few lateral holes are drilled in reservoirs of this type, but the data may be of some value in guiding future work or aiding to explain observed phenomena.

ALTHOUGH the occurrence of a readily visible tarnish on the stress-corrosion fracture surfaces of titanium alloys tested in oxygenated nitrogen tetrox-ide solutions has been reported,' the possibility that the formation of this tarnish is a requirement for cracking to proceed does not appear to have been considered. It has been proposed that failure occurs in this system as a result of some electrochemical-mechanical process.2 However, recent studies3-6 of the stress-corrosion cracking of a brass in certain ammoniacal solutions, which also cause visible tarnishing, have led to the view that failure occurs by the repeated formation and fracture of a brittle surface film of cuprous oxide. The purpose of this note is to point out the similarities which exist between the tarnish which forms on a brass and that found on titanium alloys failed in nitrogen tetroxide, and to suggest, by analogy, that a similar tarnish-rupture mechanism may be operative in the latter case. The titanium alloy selected for the present study contained 5.2 pct Al, 2.5 pct Sn, 0.025 pct C, 0.16 pct Fe, 0.014 pct N, 0.012 pct H, 0.07 pct 0, and 0.002 pct Mn by weight. Vacuum-annealed alloy strips measuring 4 by 0.25 by 0.04 in. were used to prepare self-stressed test specimens. Each specimen was made from two strips by bending the end portions and spot welding them together to produce curved sections of uniform bending stress. (The exact details of preparing such specimens have been described by Lisagor el al.7) The curvature in the strips determines the ma-magnitude of the outer fiber stress, which in the present specimens was 100,000 psi (yield stress = 120,000 psi). The specimen surface in the spot-welded end regions was shot-peened to induce compressive stresses and thereby eliminate the possibility of stress-corrosion cracking in these regions. The test environment was nitrogen tetroxide, initially containing 99.5 pct N2O4, 0.1 pct H2O, and 0.08 pct C1, through which oxygen had been bubbled for 30 min. During testing the tetroxide was subject to an oxygen pressure of 250 psi. The duration of the test was 96 hr, and during this time stress-corrosion cracks propagated through some 50 pct of the thickness of the specimens. After testing, the tarnish was liberated from the fracture surface by immersion in a methanol-5 pct bromine solution, and then examined by electron dif- fraction and transmission electron microscopy using a JEM-7 electron microscope. The possibility that the bromine solution had affected the structure of the tarnish was investigated by an "in silu" examination of the stress-corrosion fracture surface using a reflection electron diffraction attachment designed for handling bulk specimens. Typical areas of the tarnish liberated by the me-thanol-bromine solution are shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l(a) reveals that the tarnish consists of individual platelets, and from Fig. l(b) it can be seen that the platelets are joined together to form a semicontinuous film, the boundaries of the titanium substrate grains being retained in the tarnish. Electron-diffraction patterns taken from these areas exhibited diffraction spots typical of a monocrystal. The diffraction pattern shown in Fig. 2 was taken from the central area in Fig. l(n). Monocrystal patterns obtained from areas containing numerous individual platelets can only be explained by assuming that their growth is governed by the titanium substrate (i.e., their growth is epitaxial). In other areas, the tarnish had folded over or became mechanically damaged, and these areas gave diffraction patterns consisting of "spotted" rings, enabling interplanar spacings of the tarnish lattice to be determined. THE purpose of this paper is to make public record of new information in regard to the sustaining power of artificial mine-roof supports (not timber props) the result of investigations recently made in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania. First.-By the "Scranton Mine Cave Commission," appointed to investigate the mining conditions under the City of Scranton. Second.-By the "Pennsylvania Mine Cave Commission," appointed by the Governor to investigate the general subject of mine caves in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. Third.-By the personal researches and tests made by the author in an effort to secure a better artificial mine-roof or surface support. During the progress of the work of the Scranton Mine Cave Commission, the Engineers for the Commission, Messrs. Conner and. Griffith, being aware of the general lack of exact information in the engineering profession as to the strength of the ordinary artificial mine-roof or surface support, and particularly the stronger kinds, such as mine cogs, rock piers, etc., had tests made at the. Fritz Engineering Laboratory at Lehigh University, to determine the sustaining power under various compressions of the several kinds of artificial mine supports in use in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. A report of these tests was included in the report of this Commission, which was published as Bulletin No. 25 of the United States Bureau of Mines, Washington. A similar series of tests, more extensive and more elaborately-planned, were subsequently made for the Pennsylvania Mine Cave Commission at the U. S. Government Testing Laboratory at Pittsburgh, Pa. The report of this Commission was made to the Governor, but has not yet been published.

Atlantic Richfield Co. began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April 1975, in Live Oak County, Tex., 10 miles southwest of the town of George West. The operation is designed to produce 250,00 lb of U308 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Co., Dalco, and U.S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural cattle ranching and farming---but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well. A nine month enviromental baseline study was conducted on the property beginning in Feb. 1975. Plants and animals of the Clay West area were identified and representative terrestrial and aquatic communities were analyzed. Physical and chemical parameters of the soils were described and analyzed. The surface and underground waters were analyzed chemically; radionuclides, heavy metals, nutrients, and pesticide concentrations were measured in the creek sediments; bacteriological measurements were made in creek water and sediments; radionuclide and chemical levels in plants and animals, both terrestial and aquatic, were measured. These studies, though not required by existing, state or federal laws, were considered necessary to assess the existing conditions before operations began on site. The in-place leaching technique for uranium mining eliminates the enviromental disturbances associated with open pit or underground mining. No grinding and crushing of ore is needed, nor are large tonnages of waste tailings produced. Surface subsidence is not expected since less than 5 lb of uranium is present per ton of rock and even complete removal of such small amounts should not cause subsidence. Solution mining has fewer environmental problems than conventional mining. Members of the Texas Water Quality Board recognized the differences which exist and have recently formulated new environmental control procedures which apply specifically to solution mining. Some of the solution mining activities which are of particular concern are discussed in the following pages. Process Description The produced uranium-bearing solution is pumped through a pipeline from the pattern area to the plant area. The first pattern area consists of a nest of 125 fluid injection, production, and monitor wells [(Fig. 1)]. Injection wells have 4-in. casings and are spaced 50 ft apart on a square grid. Production wells have a 6-in. casing and are located in the center of each square. A block flow sheet of the plant is given in [Fig. 2]. The produced solution goes through parallel trains, each consisting of a carbon column and an ion exchange column in series. The carbon column removes any sand present in the produced solution and the ion exchange column extracts the uranium. The depleted solution is treated with chemicals and returned to the field for reinjection. The uranium retained in the ion exchange column is removed periodically with a sodium chloride solution. Uranium-bearing solution from the ion exchange column is passed through a charcoal column for removal of impurities and then to a precipitation tank where the uranium is precipitated as yellowcake slurry. The yellowcake slurry is clarified, filtered and dried to produce a granular yellowcake product. Environmental Considerations Sources of waste solutions to storage reservoirs, the backwash reservoir and atmospheric discharges are shown in the block flow sheet [(Fig. 2)]. These waste solutions pose a relatively small problem and are adequately controlled by conventional means. There is one area, however,

It has been demonstrated in previous work1'2 that wetting of aluminum alloys by liquid mercury can cause fracture to occur with substantial suppression of prior plastic flow. This has been interpreted as the action of a critical liquid species in reducing the cohesive strength of a stressed solid at sites of potential crack nucleation. In this way the critical transverse stress for fracture nucleation is reached at much lower stresses than is normally the case. The stresses for both fracture nucleation and fracture propagation are depressed by the same mechanism. In so doing the plastic-energy component of fracture energy is reduced to a level which is of the same order of magnitude as the surface, interfacial, or cleavage energy. Recent work2 has illustrated the influence of dispersed precipitates, cold work, and combinations of these on brittle fracture associated with plastic strains of the microyield order of magnitude. This has been rationalized in terms of the contribution of internal microstress fields to the stress magnifications at points of obstruction of active slip bands in a stressed metal. The presently reported studies on an Al-4-1/2 pct Mg alloy amplify this subject by introducing thermal-mechanical conditions which can produce strain aging. As amply demonstrated by Phillips, Swain, and borall, the tensile behavior of aluminum alloys containing magnesium reveals a yield-point elongation and successive discontinuous elongations over the whole plastic-strain range. This gives a stepped or serrated character to the stress-strain diagram. The yield-point elongation is not temperature-dependent. On the other hand, the discontinuous extensions in the plastic-strain range are gradually suppressed by lower temperatures of testing. At -78"C, only the yield-point elongation persists. The yield-point elongation itself can be suppressed by rapid quenching to room temperature from an annealing temperature of 500°C. The argument presented by Phillips et 1. and Cottre114 is that the yield-point elongation derives from surmounting at a critical stress the restraint to slip by grain boundaries which have been reinforced by appreciable magnesium-atom segregation. The serrated character of the plastic-strain range is the result of rapid strain aging during the test. This is made possible by the inevitable proximity of magnesium atoms to any dislocation line. In the Al-4-1/2 pct Mg alloy there is one magnesium atom for every twenty-two aluminum atoms and, with a coordination number of 12, a magnesium atom is on the average only about two atomic distances from any given lattice site. Rapid strain aging is therefore a reasonable expectation. A study of mercury embrittlement of the Al-4-1/2 pct Mg alloy (commercial designation 5083) provides an opportunity to relate the interplay of grain size, grain boundary restraint to slip and strain aging in the brittle-fracture process. One lot of commercial sheet material of 0.125-in. thickness was used for all of the tests. The specimen shape and test procedures used were the same as those described in a previous publication.2 A range of grain sizes between 0.0057 and 0.0125 mm was produced by various combinations of plastic prestrain and annealing. The coarsest grain was somewhat elongated in shape. In this case the measurement was taken in the direction transverse to the axis of tension as more meaningful to a brittle-fracture process. In the annealed condition, specimens wetted with mercury failed with zero permanent elongation at stresses slightly below the normal yield point, i.e., stresses at 0.05 to 0.2 pct strain. Since this occurs before yield-point elongation can begin, fracture derives from slip contained within individual grains and restrained from propagating across grain boundaries. No significant difference in wetted fracture stress was observed between specimens which had been water-quenched or furnace-cooled from the annealing temperatures. Experimental statistical designs were used at Zortman Mining Company's, Zortman, Montana, heap-leach operation to establish functional relationships between key operating parameters and gold/silver recoveries. Zinc feed rate, lead feed rate, and vacuum (CFM/gpm) account for 64% and 67% of the attainable gold and silver recoveries, respectively. Surface response graphs of the resulting polynomials were plotted. These graphs were used to optimize Zortman's Merrill-Crowe precipitation process.

IT. H. Hausner( Sylvunia Electric Products Inc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—The results reported by the authors are interesting because they contribute some information on the principles of sintering and also because of a certain practical value for the manufacture of powder . metallurgical parts in production. Pressed powder compacts are frequently sintered in a boat in several layers so that the lower layers are actually sintered under the weight of the upper layers and, therefore, are frequently deformed. The authors gave information on this deformation process by determining the effect of the load on the density. The experimental setup of the authors, however, has a disadvantage—that the sintering occurred in a cylindrical container so that the deformation was stopped in the direction of the diameter. The authors should have rather called this a study of hot-pressing than of sintering. I want to call the attention of the authors and others interested in sintering under load to the experimental work described by Dawihl and Rix.' These authors sintered cylindrical compacts under a lengthwise ten-sional load of 0 to 25 g and found that the shrinkage in length and diameter changes considerably with the load, but that the volume shrinkage is affected very little by the load. H. S. Cannon (authors' reply)—We wish to thank Dr. Hausner for calling attention to the experimental work of Dawihl and Rix. The fact that they found volume shrinkage little affected by varying tensional loads during sintering seems to support the contention that the forces due to loading are equivalent to and additive to the forces which cause densification. This contention is the basis of our comparison of sintering and creep.

It has been known for many years that when a wire is moved in a magnetic field, an electromotive force is developed which is proportional to the rate at which the wire is moved in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic intensity and to the magnetic intensity itself. If the ends of the wire are connected to a current indicator, the current behaves exactly as though the source of electromotive force were a galvanic cell. If a wire is wound circularly and rotated uniformly around a diameter not parallel to the intensity, the current flowing through the wire will be alternating of sinusoidal shape. If, instead of a single loop, there are several turns wound in a short helix, the electromotive force developed will be approximately proportional to the number of turns, the area of the helix and to the speed of rotation. The maximum electromotive force will be developed when the axis of rotation is perpendicular to the field; if this is not so, only the component of the intensity that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation is effective. This is the principle of the usual earth inductor. With a few turns of wire and comparatively slow rotation, it is possible to produce a considerable deflection of a galvanometer. If two similar coils are rotated together at two different points for which the magnetic field intensities perpendicular to the axes of rotation are different, the electromotive forces developed will each depend on its corresponding intensity and be a measure of that intensity. If the intensities are sufficiently different so that the electromotive forces may be compared, the two intensities may be compared. This is the principle

In October 1939, a drilling program was commenced on the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil, with three steam rotary rigs of medium capacity. One of these was assigned to the State of Alagbas and the other two to the State of Bahia. During the remaining few months of 1939 and during the year 1940, some eight wells were drilled, two in Alagbas and six in Bahia. Two small producers were found in the latter state. In early 1941 three medium-weight Diesel rigs were added to the equipment, thus permitting the drilling of some 15 wells during the year 1941. The two small producers found in 1940 in the State of Rahia were near the city of Silo Salvador. In 1941 three additional small wells were brought in, in the same area, and a further producer on an isolated structure some 75 km. to the northwest of this production. No commercial production has been found in the State of Alagbas. Approximately 26 wells have been drilled or are drilling, six of which are producers— five in one area and one in another. The program for 1942 calls for the development of the two areas in which wells have been found and also the drilling of several wildcat structures located either by geophysics or surface geology. All production in the area of the several producing wells is somewhat less than 2000 ft. and in the other area about 3800 ft. The area of the several wells is known as the Lobato field, and is practically within the city limits of Sao Salvador. The area 75 km. northwest of the city will be known as the Candeias field.

In October 1939, a drilling program was commenced on the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil, with three steam rotary rigs of medium capacity. One of these was assigned to the State of Alagbas and the other two to the State of Bahia. During the remaining few months of 1939 and during the year 1940, some eight wells were drilled, two in Alagbas and six in Bahia. Two small producers were found in the latter state. In early 1941 three medium-weight Diesel rigs were added to the equipment, thus permitting the drilling of some 15 wells during the year 1941. The two small producers found in 1940 in the State of Rahia were near the city of Silo Salvador. In 1941 three additional small wells were brought in, in the same area, and a further producer on an isolated structure some 75 km. to the northwest of this production. THE Institute assembled in Packer Hall of the Lehigh University, the President, Mr. David Thomas, of Catasauqua in the chair. Professor Henry Coppée, President of the Lehigh University, made an address of welcome to the Institute, and placed at its disposal a convenient hall for purposes of meeting. Mr. Thomas tendered his resignation as President of the Institute, as advancing years prevented him from actively participating in its meetings. The Institute declined to accept the resignation, and, on the assurance that active duties would not be expected of him, Mr. Thomas was induced to withdraw it. Invitations were received from Mr. B. C. Webster, President of the Lehigh Zinc Company, to visit the mines and works of the company; from Mr. Charles Brodhead, to visit the Chapman Slate Quarries; and from the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, to visit their works at Summit Hill and Mauch Chunk and the Nesquehoning Tunnel. The Council reported the names of persons already elected in the two classes of members and associates. The following resolutions were passed : Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed, who shall take into consideration the printing and publishing of papers originating with the Institute, and that a uniform system as regards size and execution be adopted. The committee appointed consisted of Messrs. R. W. Raymond, E. B. Coxe, and the Secretary. Resolved, That the Council design and prepare a seal for the Institute at the earliest practicable time. Resolved, That a committee of six, with power to add to its numbers, be appointed to examine into the question of the more economical production of iron in this country.
