The quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The variation in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the Iron and Steel Institute.' From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots. General Theory of Segregation The basic cause of segregation lies in the fact that the impurities are less soluble in solid than in liquid iron. The solid that forms from the impure liquid is more nearly pure than the liquid itself. If solidification proceeds slowly enough, or if the liquid and solid phases are maintained in contact with one another for a sufficient time, a condition of equilibrium is set up, which may be represented by a phase diagram. Previous studies have shown that the permeabilities of sandstone cores are markedly reduced following exposure to drilling fluid and subsequent clean-up with oil at high-pressure gradients. Laboratory experiments reported in this paper indicate that permeability damage from drilling mud or water can be substantially avoided through use of an initial low-pressure gradient followed by gradually increasing gradients during clean-up by reverse oil flow. On the other hand, attempts to improve the permeability of damaged Berea and oil formation cores with high-rate oil backflush (simulated well stimulation) and low-rate clean-up gave erratic results. Essentfully complete permeability repair was achieved in most of the fresh water-damaged cores from Miocene and Pliocene oil-producing formations; only minor improvement was noted generally in tests with both water-and mud-damaged Berea sandstone. Field well stimulation treatments using high-rate back-flush resulted in long-term productivity improvement when production was brought in at gradually increasing production rates and then restricted to a steady value less than the maximum possible rate. Wellbore plugging at high production rates correlated with increasing solids content in the produced oil. Observations and results from these tests agree with current concepts that formation damage in water-sensitive rocks results from movement and bridging of formation fines, rather than from clay swelling alone. INTRODUCTION Many laboratory studies1-g have shown that the permeabilities of sandstone cores are often markedly reduced following exposure to fresh water or water-base drilling mud filtrate. However, work with cores in the restored state has demonstrated that, although permeabilities to water may be very low for sandstones containing hy-dratable clays, flow of oil can often restore a substantial portion of the effective permeabilities to oi1.Neverthe- less, water invasion into water-sensitive sandstone cores results in varying degrees of permanent reduction in permeability to oil.24' Based on field data, Wade's statistical study" of well completion effectiveness also indicated a correlation between productivity damage and water invasion during completion. Similar damage can result from fluid invasion during workover. Nowak and Krueger' and Bertness4 observed in their early work (1951-53) that formation damage in water-sensitive sandstones was associated not only with swelling of expandable clays but also with movement of dispersed particles. Subsequent work by Monaghan et al." (1959), Atwood'' (19641, Mungan" (1965) and Gray and Rex'" (1965) has led to general acceptance of the hypothesis that permeability damage in water-sensitive formations is caused by migration of finely dispersed minerals and bridging in "brush heap" arrangements at pore constructions. In laboratory studies, Monaghan et al.' found the use of chemicals to be of only minor value for repairing formation damage. Atwood? however, was successful in substantially repairing damage in a number of low-permeability cores using an n-hexanol flush. In the field, except for treatments with acids, the use of chemical washes to reduce wellbore damage has had limited and sporadic success and generally is unpredictable. A statistical analysis of stimulation treatments in silt-blocked wells has shown that physical manipulation of wash materials is more important than chemical composition." The recent work reported on formation damage in water-sensitive sands brings to mind the results of some unpublished exploratory work done in 1954 in connection with drilling fluid studies.' This laboratory work and subsequent field stimulation treatments indicated a beneficial effect of controlled pressure drawdown and the associated production rate on formation clean-up. This paper reports the results of this work and more recent supplemental experiments on the clean-up of water-sensitive sandstones damaged by water or filtrate invasion. PERMEABILITY RECOVERY AFTER DAMAGE BY DRILLING MUD APPARATUS AND TEST SAMPLES A drilling mud circulating system was used to expose cores to simulated wellbore conditions. The mud flow system is the same as that described by Krueger and Voge17 except that no provision was made for scraping

"The zinc concentrator of the Butte & Superior Copper company, shown on the opposite page, represents an industry which is coming into importance in Butte. The existence of large bodies of zinc ore in some of the silver veins of Butte has been realized for years, but it is only recently that some of them have proved amenable to successful concentration. Most of the zinc ores thus far found in the camp are mixed with considerable pyrite, but those found in the Black Rock and Elm Orlu mines contain very little pyrite, so that a concentrate low in iron is possible.The Butte & Superior mill is rated at 1,200 tons daily capacity. The ore is sphalerite, most of which is finely disseminated through a hard quartz gangue, with small quantities of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, rhodocrosite and rhodonite. In mining, the included granite and the low grade vein matter are sorted out and used for waste filling so that the ore as it goes to the concentrator will carry about 20 per cent of zinc, 1 per cent lead, .25 per cent copper, 8 to 10 ozs. silver and a little gold. The ore bodies ranging from 5 to 103 feet in width, are mined by the square set method and filling of stopes with waste rock.The ore is hard and tough requiring extensive crushing and grinding equipment, consisting of Blake and gyratory crushers, 54-inch and 42-inch high speed rolls, Chili mills, Tube, and Conical mills. All of the lead con¬centrate and part of the zinc concentrate are recovered in the upper part of the mill by jigs and tables. The classifier overflow and the re-ground jig and table tailings go to settling tanks and from there to the Hyde Flotation process, where the balance of the zinc concentrate is recovered, and the tailing go to waste."

During 1932 no important changes occurred in the position of Africa as a producer of petroleum. The progress of development and production in each of the areas of interest is described below. Egypt The producing fields of Egypt are Hurghada and Gemsa, located on the west short of the Red Sea, and Abu Durba in the Sinai Peninsula. Most of the production is obtained from the Hurghada field, chiefly from beds of Cretaceous age. To the end of 1930 the Hurghada field had produced 2,831,751 tons of petroleum. The Gemsa field, discovered in 1909, reached its peak of production in 1914, when 88,000 tons were produced. Of late years the production has greatly declined. Total production of the field to the end of 1930 is 182,870 tons. The total production of Abu Durba to the end of 1930 is 7069 tons. The production of Egypt for recent years is as follows: 1928, 269,324 tons; 1929, 271,520; 1930, 281,997 (1,996,000 bbl.); 1931, 288,260 (2,038,000 bbl.); 1932, 253,182 (approximately 1,790,000 bbl.). Mozambique The operations of Inyaminga Petroleum Ltd., which was engaged in drilling in the colony, have been suspended. Angola Drilling operations in this colony, conducted by Companhia de Petroleo de Angola under a concession from the Portuguese Government, were continued. A test well drilled at Cacoba, about 60 miles southeast of Luanda, to a depth of 5651 ft. was not a commercial producer. A second well was being drilled in the vicinity at the end of 1932. In the coastal plain region of the middle Atlantic slope there are no large supplies of potable surface-waters. The great rivers by which the region is intersected are tidal estuaries, and the water of their local branches is often of bad quality. The cities situated at intervals along the western margin of the region obtain a plentiful supply of excellent water from the rivers above the tidal estuaries, but out on the coastal plain surface-waters are mainly used. A few artesian wells have been sunk which afford abundant water, but their number is at present very limited. Norfolk, Newport News, and the many smaller places use surface-waters, and all over the region there is great need for purer and more abundant supplies. During the past five years I have been engaged in a study of the geology of the coastal plain for the U. S. Geological Survey, and have given special attention to the question of subterranean waters. In this communication I shall present a brief review of the geological conditions under which such waters occur in this region, and give an account of the wells which have been bored. Unfortunately the number of well-records is small, and some of the most important questions of subterranean geology are as yet far from settled. It is hoped that this paper may lead to further borings, especially as the cost of artesian wells has been much reduced by the introduction of new machinery and methods, and is now quite within the reach of the average community. In New Jersey there are many wells, and the water-bearing horizons are so definitely determined that they may almost everywhere be predicted with certainty. In Maryland and Virginia the data are less definite, but there is excellent evidence of a wide distribution of water at moderate depths.

The problem of sulfur control is important in all blast-furnace operations but particularly for certain grades of steel because of the rigorous specifications. During the past decade the tendency has been to produce pig iron and hot metal of lower sulfur content. As most of the sulfur in the iron originates in the fuel, the use of high-sulfur coke demands modifications in practice to meet sulfur specifications. While it is generally known that high temperatures and more basic slags favor desulfurization, operators as a rule produce the most acid slag that will permit proper desulfurization. The viscosity of blastfurnace slag has been thought to be related to desulfurization and has been investigated by Feild and Roysterl, also McCaffery and his associates*, but apparently no systematic effort has been made to determine the relative desulfurizing powers of slags over the range of composition encountered in practice. Development of Testing Method Because slag and metallic iron are immiscible, the desulfurization reaction is heterogeneous, occurring only at the interfaces between slag and metal bodies. In the blast furnace the newly reduced iron, containing FeS, descends through the slag bath probably either as small drops or streams, at the interfaces of which desulfurization occurs. After its descent through the slag the iron collects to form a bath of metal, at the top surface of which desulfurization reaction probably occurs. These two steps have been thought to account for all desulfurization in the blast furnace. Kinney3 found that metal removed from the blast furnace just above the tuyeres contained three to four times as much sulfur as the iron at cast. In preparing this paper the object has been to set forth facts relating to illumination problems, which, judging from the results realized in the iron and steel and other industries somewhat similar to mining, will tend toward furthering safety, production, and contentment of employees, as well as economy of operation in mines. By applying the principles of illumination with the assistance of modern appliances, the full benefits in efficiency may be derived from improvements already made in other details of mine operation. The lighting of a typical coal mine may be*divided into four distinct parts: 1, The lighting of the buildings about the top; 2, the lighting of the working faces; 3, general illumination at the bottom; and 4, special applications of lighting. The lighting of buildings about the top may be treated in the same manner as that of any other industrial plant, for we have a boiler room, an engine and generator room, a forge, a machine shop, and a hoist room. These can be well and efficiently lighted by the use of 100-watt tungsten-filament multiple lamps with proper reflectors so spaced and suspended that a power consumption of from ¼ watt per square foot in the boiler room to 1 watt per square foot in the machine shop is obtained. The methods that apply to this kind of lighting have been ably treated by a number of authors,' and for this reason a detailed discussion is unnecessary. The lighting of the working faces is usually done by means of portable lamps, of which there are four types in use: The oil torch, the acetylene Iamp, and the oil and the electric safety lamps. The material that forms the basis of this paper was collected in the spring of 1922, during a ten-day visit to Ducktown by the writer in the company of Prof. L. C. Graton. The time available for the work was far too short to allow anything like a thorough study of the deposits, and structural and stratigraphic questions, though they have an important bearing on the origin of the primary ores, were necessarily left untouched. Attention was focussed on the zone of oxidation and enrichment; and by devoting most of our time to the upper levels, open pits, and old workings, and examining the deeper levels only thoroughly enough to obtain a fair idea of the nature of the primary sulfide ore, we were able to make a reasonably complete survey of the various orebodies. With this field work for a background, the writer later made a study, in the Harvard laboratories, of the specimens obtained during the visit. As some of the facts brought to light by this study appear to be new, it seems worth while to set forth the outstanding features and a proposed explanation of them. Much of the Ducktown material that is obviously of greatest significance, as regards oxidation and enrichment, is soft and crumbly. Notwithstanding the desirability of gaining from such material all possible information as to its mineral composition and textural relationships, but little has heretofore been learned regarding it; but, by suitable preparation of this material in connection with the present study, it has been possible to examine it under the microscope without any disturbance of its texture and about as satisfactorily as if it were hard, fresh ore. The information thus gained has contributed measurably to the results set forth in this paper.

IN examining the progress of metallurgical science, the critic must remember that most of our present knowledge of metals and alloys has been accumulated through the needs of industry and commerce rather than through the desire and efforts of a large body of scientists interested primarily in developing a science of metals. The progress of metallurgy, scientifically speaking, has been irregular, and little given to the exhaus-tive exploitation of important scientific fields. The experienced engineer now recognizes the need for the development of the basic science upon which his engineering rests. In addition to the increase in knowledge which results from the normal requirements of industry, a development of the basic science of the behavior of metals and alloys is as desirable in metallurgy as in any other branch of science and engineering. The continued growth of the science of metals-as of every other science-requires studious attention to the principles that underlie the behavior of matter, with the result that knowledge in the several fields of interest should continue to increase. Among the various subjects recognized as important in physical metallurgy few have a wider significance than that of diffusion in solid metals. The phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic problems of the metallic state, but in addition to this, the process of diffu-sion is of first importance practically. The formation of alloys by the annealing of mixed powders, first practiced by Faraday and Stodart81 in 1820 and in more recent years investigated by Masing187,189 and others, has led to the development of special alloys like Carboloy, Vascoloy-Ramet, Genelite, Elcon68, and has recently been applied to the production of noble-metal alloys for electrical contacts"'.
