THE term "slime-coating" is not new in the art of flotation; the phenomenon has been observed and described by Taggart;(1)? Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) and by Ince.(3) Notwithstanding that flotation was introduced for the treatment of finely crushed ore, the adverse effects of slimes have been recognized since the earliest days of the process, and the Elmore, Delprat, Potter, and other processes actually specified desliming of the ore prior to treatment. The cause of this trouble has been studied and described by Taggart;(1) Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) Ince; 3 Morrow and Griswold;(4) and by Gaudin and Malozemoff.(5) OLD THEORY OF SLIME-COATINGS At present, so far as published work shows, there seems to be but one theory for the mechanism of slime-coatings. Ince(3) states that they are due to attraction between electrostatic charges of opposite sign on the sulfide and, on the slime particles, supporting this theory by migration experiments in the Burton tube. He also used the microscope in conjunction with a glass cell employed by Beans and Eastlack(6) in studying migration, but met with interference from endosmosis. Several attempts have been made in the Department of Mineral Dressing at Columbia University to duplicate Ince's experiments with the Burton tube, but the results have never been convincing. Formation of precipitates which settled through the pulp levels, and evolution of gas at the electrodes, which disturbed the interface between the pulp and the distilled water above it, seriously interfered with observations. However, by use of the migration cell shown in Fig. 1, endosmosis effects and the disturbances due to precipitation and gas evolution were avoided, and distinct and reproducible migrations or absence of migration were observed.

The effects of selected alloying elements on the elevated-temperature tensile properties of copper alloy -tungsten fiber reinforced composites were invcstigated. A cornparison of the elevated-temperature tensile properties of copper alloy - tungsten fiber reinforced composites, representing soluble systems. was made with copper - tungsten fiber reinforced composites, representing a mutually insoluble system. A linear relation between tensile strength and volume percent fiber content existed at elevated temperatures for all the systenzs investigated. The copper alloy composites were weaker in tension at high volume percent fiber contents than copper composites in which alloying with the fiber did not occur. The tensile strength of the alloyed tungsten fiber decreased with increasing penetration of the alloying element into Ihe tungsten fiber. THE technique of combining strong fibers with relatively weak matrix materials so that the fibers are load-carrying members has been utilized for many years in the reinforcement of plastics with glass fibers. This type of strengthening is currently being extended to include the reinforcement of metals with metallic fibers. Investigations of the room-temperature tensile properties of metal-fiber-reinforced metallic composites have been numerous,'-" but the study of tensile properties at elevated temperatures has been limited. In previous work done at the Lewis Research Center' composites consisting of mutually insoluble constituents were investigated. Composites were made of copper reinforced with uniaxially oriented tungsten fibers. The stress-strain behavior and tensile properties of the composites were related to the tensile properties of the base materials. The tensile strength of the composite was directly proportional to the volume percent of tungsten fiber present, and the full strength of the fiber was realized. EVER since the first installation of wet-washing methods of coal preparation, the removal of the water added by the washing process has created serious technical and operating problems. The rapid development and widespread adoption of wet washing has necessitated a corresponding development of dewatering methods and equipment. The amount of water retained by coal varies with the size of the coal. The moisture that is largely on the surface of the particles is easily shaken off coarse coal; thus coarse coal can be dried comparatively easily and quickly. Fine coal presents a larger surface area than does coarse coal, so its capacity for retaining moisture is greater. In fine coal, moisture below about 5 per cent is held between the coal particles and its removal is difficult. Draining and drying of the finer sizes is a major problem at many washeries. Two common problems of coal-washing practice that are intimately connected with dewatering and drying are the clarification of washery water and the prevention of stream pollution. The first field has been studied from many angles, including the use of coagulating and settling agents followed by vacuum filters to remove the solids, and the use of sludge tanks with dewatering screens incorporated therein. In many districts, the disposal of sludges into streams has been stopped by law. The lack of space for impounding sludges has created problems of disposal in other districts. Reduction in moisture means a saving in freight costs as well as the elimination of difficulties in unloading and storing. Excess moisture in coal causes it to freeze in localities where severe climatic conditions pre¬vail. Excess water in coals to be used in the production of coke and manufactured gas has a chilling effect on the walls of the oven or retort. Dryness of coal is important in producing good briquettes.

INTRODUCTION A nickel doesn't buy much anymore. That's even true in the cost of recovering nickel -- the commodity. A 5[C] per pound (11 [c] per kilogram) increase in the nickel price won't cover a 10-percent increase in fuel costs for processing laterite ores, nor will it cover a 10- percent increase in wages for recovering nickel from a sulphide ore. It won't even cover a 5- percent increase in the capital cost necessary to mine and process ocean nodules. The basis for this statement and a quantitative analysis of the variations in costs to recover nickel from different types of nickel ores will be discussed in this paper. During the early part of the 1970's, the interest in nickel and its potential development was shifting from Canada to the Pacific Basin area. Canadian growth rate was slowing and each additional increase in nickel capacity was very expensive (Argall, G.O., 1970). Laterite ores were attractive to developers since they were easy to mine at a low labor cost, and technologies were being developed that would allow the recovery of nickel in marketable forms (Mohide, T.P., Warden, C.L., Mason, J.D., 1977). During the last decade, new laterite production was achieved in the Philippines and Botswana, and a significant increase in production from Indonesia and New Caledonia occurred. However, recent reports on nickel identify numerous problems plaguing the industry, i.e., high energy costs that are forcing shutdowns (INCO, 1980), (Mohide, T.P., Warden, C.L., Mason, J.D., 1977), high Canadian sulphide mining labor costs (Anon., 1976), and rapid inflation of nickel capital costs (Anon., 1981b). No definitive study has been made to determine how sensitive the total cost of production is to rising energy, labor, or capital costs, or to identify to what extent increased byproduct revenues could be used to offset these production costs. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the effects of increases in energy, labor, capital costs, and by-product credits on the future cost of production from nickel reserves and/or resources. METHODOLOGY OF ANALYSIS In order to evaluate the sensitivity of nickel production costs to changes in energy, labor, and capital costs, and in byproduct revenues, an analysis was made of existing and proposed nickel operations, their costs, and their sensitivity to change. The data for these analyses were obtained from numerous sources including international govern¬ment and university publications, professional journals, company reports, private communications, U.S. Bureau of Mines contracts, and estimates by Bureau of Mines personnel. These data were collected, in part, as an ongoing effort of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System (MAS) to systematically measure and classify identified mineral resources according to their respective extraction technologies, economics, and commercial availability. The MAS Program is currently evaluating the present and potential availability of nickel to the United States in relation to mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, leaching, transportation, infrastructure, environment, land use, labor, productivity, technology efficiencies, operating capacities, deposit life, and political factors. As a summary of this data, the following briefly describes nickel ore types as each relates to energy, labor, capital, and byproducts. Sulphide Operations Nickel is currently available from sulphide deposits. Roughly 55 percent of the current world nickel production in market economy countries is from sulphide ores, although only about 20 percent of the known land-based nickel reserves and/or resources are sulphides (INCO, 1981). In 1979, the Western World sulphide reserves were estimated at about 9.2 million metric tons of nickel (Little, A.D., 1979). Sulphide ores are typically mined underground, thus resulting in high mining costs; however, these ores can often be upgraded by flotation prior to final nickel recovery and require about one-third of the energy required to recover nickel from laterites (Anon., 1981c). In addition, nickel in sulphide ores may be associated with economically recoverable byproducts, which include copper, cobalt, gold, silver, and other precious metals. Laterite Operations Forty-five percent of current nickel production is from laterite deposits. Laterite deposits account for 80 percent of the known land-based nickel reserves and/or resources (INCO, 1981). In 1979, the Western World laterite reserves were estimated at over 35 million metric tons of nickel (Little, A.D., 1979). Nickeliferrous laterites are residual soils formed by weathering, typically under tropical or near tropical conditions. They can be easily mined by open-cut methods, but generally cannot be beneficiated; thus, recovery of nickel must entail processing of the total mined ore. Usually, these ores have high moisture content (20 to 30 percent by weight) that result in additional fuel costs to dry the ore. Nickel silicates, garnierites, are, processed by pyrometallurgical methods; limonite nickel oxides are normally leached. Byproduct cobalt is not recovered from most ferronickel operations, and is only recovered to a limited extent from many leach operations.

Any mining engineer with a desire to operate independently, with some financial backing, and with no fear of heavy responsibility and long hours, should be able to make a comfortable living in Mexico. Barring a few inconveniences such as a lack of satisfactory liability or accident insurance, the difficulty of obtaining repair parts for vehicles, and the length of time required receive returns from shipments, the operation of a small mine is not at all difficult. It is, in fact, a little easier to find a good prospect in Mexico than in the U.S.

Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. In 1975 unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a "talc" claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from nearby metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

A large aggregate tonnage of oxidized and mixed oxide-sulfide copper ore of the southwestern U.S. is not amenable to conventional flotation concentration or sulfuric acid leach treatment. Most of the ores contain chrysocolla as the principal oxide copper mineral, for which no successful commercial flotation method has yet been developed. Acid leaching some ores is not feasible since they contain substantial quantities of calcite and other acid-consuming constituents. Other ores decrepitate during leaching or contain excessive slime and clay minerals which cause plugging of the ore beds.

During 1980-2000, the Florida phosphate industry will deplete its central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the so-called southern Florida reserve areas. These mines will require new mining, beneficiation, and tailings disposal technologies since southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the central Florida deposits. Furthermore, government regulations will necessitate development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. A modifiedl Czochralski technique has been utilized to grow single crystals of YVO, pure or doped with europium or neodymium, from 1 to 2 in. long and 4 to 1/2 in. in dianz. An oxyhydrog-en gas-fired furftace zuas used in this ulork, and melts were contained in iridium crucibles. Successful application of the Czochralski ~vzethod was found to depend upon atmosphere control to prevent crusting and to limit melt decomposition, the establishment of symmetrical thermal gradients in the melt to obtain stable growth, and the selection of high-quality single-crystal seeds to prevent propagation of misorientations during growth and subsequent catastrophic cracking. The suitability of YVO4 as a host for laser-active trivalent rare earth ions has long been recognized. However, the problems associated with the growth of sufficiently large, good-quality single crystals have, until quite recently, seriously hindered satisfactory evaluation of the laser potentialities of this material. Both flux growth and Czochralski growth techniques were investigated at an early stage of interest in YVO,. The former method proved incapable of yielding crystals large enough for practical use,ly2 and the latter was beset with difficulties which took some considerable time to understand and overcome. Recently, however, the Czochralski growth process for YVO, has been improved along separate but similar lines of development by groups working independently in the Crystal Products Department of Union Carbide's Electronics Division and Bell Telephone Laboratories3 so that now good-quality single crystals of satisfactory size can be produced on a routine basis. Stimulated emission from a neodymium-doped YVO4 crystal grown by the Crystal Products Department of Union Carbide was obtained by O'connor4 of MIT, Lincoln Labs. An oxyhydrogen gas-fired furnace was used in this work, Fig. 1, and melts were contained in iridium crucibles. The starting material was 99.9 to 99.99 pct pure YVO4 powder purchased from the Chemical and Metallurgical Division of the Sylvania Electric Products Co. Typical impurity levels, determined by spectrographic analyses, were as follows: Si, 50 to 500 ppm Al, Fe, Mg, 5 to 50 ppm Ni, Pb, Mo, Mn, Ce, Cs, 1 to 10 ppm Initially, YV04 powders predoped with neodymium or europium were obtained from Sylvania. Later, however, because of a desire to grow a series of crystals containing relatively broad concentration ranges of these dopants, it proved more convenient to start with pure YV04 and mechanically admix Nd2O3 or Eu@~ powders plus equimolar amounts of V2O5. Flotation feed was hell constant for batch laboratory tests and continuous pilot and commercial plant tests on a spodumene ore to determine the relation.ship between flotation behavior and the size and type of flotation machine. Results. showed that additional retention time would be needed in the plant flotation circuit to duplicate laboratory or pilot plant performance when operating Dariables of the. plant flotation machines remained unchanged. During the past few years of operation at Kings Mountain, N. C., full-scale flotation has generally yielded poorer metallurgical results than those obtained in the laboratory or pilot plant. After 2 min in each size of Denver flotation machine in the spodumene rougher circuit, pilot recovery (41.7 pct) was almost three times that of the plant (13.6 pct) and about twice that of the laboratory (21.0 pct). Pilot and commercial plant data are based on continuous operation, and laboratory results on batch testing of rougher performance. The ore is a pegmatite containing spodumene, feldspar, quartz, mica, and amphibolite. Data were accumulated to evaluate the scale-up relationships between laboratory, pilot plant, and plant flotation cells. Flotation rate constants and dimensional analysis were used to define the relationship existing between flotation behavior and scale of operation. Measuring Flotation Rates: Efficiency of the rougher stage was measured by flotation rate, defined as the recovery that can be attained within a given time." • The problem of measuring flotation rates has been studied by many investigators, whose methods have varied. Published studies an flotation kinetics have been summarized recently by Gaudin.l When comparing flotation rates, it is more satisfactory to compare straight line relationships between recovery and flotation time than exponential curves resulting from plotting cumulative recovery vs cumulative flotation time. To convert the exponential curves into straight line relationships, rate equations were applied similar to those used in chemical kinetics to study the velocity of chemical reactions. An historical record of the history of iron-and steelmaking in the United States has long seemed a desirable project to many in The metallurgical Society of AIME. Over a period of five years, experts in their fields have been asked to put down on paper their knowledge. The series of historical articles has been published in JOURNAL OF METALS, beginning with A. B. Wilder's article in 1956, marking the first one hundred years of Bessemer Steelmaking. The Electric Furnace Committee honored the first half-century of the use of the electric arc furnace in America during their 1956 Conference, and S. B. Casey, Jr., wrote an appropriate article for JOURNAL OF METALS. The historical series was well underway. Articles soon followed on the history of the blast furnace, on the open hearth furnace, and on ferro-alloy manufacture. The final need was an authoritative article on coke ovens. The publication of the five-part article by C. S. Finney and John Mitchell this summer has concluded our series (but not the march of progress). We now present, between two covers, a comprehensive historical review, the work of 13 authors. We are hopeful that this book will receive a welcome among ironmakers and steelmakers. and that it will be a valuable reference for home or office library. We hope also that students will find the material helpful in their studies of this most important of American industries. Perhaps also, the historian of Americana will learn something new in searching through these pages. We are indebted to our authors who have spent much time on historical research, and to their companies who have supported their endeavors. We acknowledge the support of the National Open Hearth Steel Committee and of the Blast Furnace. THIS remarkable gold and silver bearing district is situated on the middle fork of Boise River, in Alturas County, Idaho Territory, about eighteen miles north of Rocky Bar, and sixty-five to seventy miles, as the crow flies, east of Boise City, the capital of the Territory. This district lies in the very heart of one of the most wild and mountainous regions of Idaho. For many miles in every direction nothing can be seen but bold granite mountains, with deep narrow gorges cutting into their sides in every direction, rendering them almost inaccessible except to the hardy mountaineer and adventurous prospector. The mountain sides are covered, in most part, by dense forests of pine, fir, and spruce timber. In every canon there are clear streams of pure running water that empty into the principal forks of Boise River. The only line of approach to this mountainous region at present is from the southwest, by way of Rocky Bar, the county seat of Alturas County, to which place there is a good wagon-road. From thence to Atlanta City, eighteen miles, the road, or pack-trail, passes over the high, steep range that separates the south and middle forks of Boise River. During severe winters this line of approach is closed up by deep snows for months at a time, thus leaving the district isolated, in the bosom of the grand old mountains. The geological formation is granite, of a coarse, friable texture, and in many places is traversed by numerous dikes of syenite, and three or four varieties of porphyry, which cut through the granite in easterly and westerly directions. The rolling and recrystallization textures in 300°C rolled uranium sheet were investigated using a Geiger counter diffractometer with the modified Schulz reflection technique. Seven sections of sheet material were used in order to obtain sufficient data for quantitative pole figures by the reflection technique. A special integrating specimen table was used for obtaining and recording the data automatically. The rolling texture was described in terms of several "ideal orientations" in which the stronger orientations have either the (1103 or (010) poles in the vicinity of the rolling direction. The recrystallization texture of the sheet uranium was also described by several "ideal orientations" which are somewhat different, except in one case, than the as-rolled "ideal orientations." RESULTS of an X-ray study of the deformation texture in rolled uranium rods were reported by Harris' in which a concentration of (010) and (110) poles was found in the rolling direction. More recently Seymour," Mitchell 'and Rowland,3 and Adam and Stephenson4 reported results obtained on uranium sheet rolled under various conditions of tem- perature and amount of reduction. Since the results of Seymour as opposed to those of the two other groups of investigators are not in full agreement, it seemed justifiable to publish the present data, obtained concurrently with the previously mentioned investigations.'-' The results with rolled and re-crystallized uranium sheet were also included in the paper, since they appear to be more complete than the only previously published texture data on recrystallized sheeL3 In the present investigation great care was taken to maintain complete separation of the reflections from different crystal planes, even in cases where the 20 angles differed from each other by less than

It is generally recognized to date that a rational stability analysis of slopes and foundations in rock masses is a desirable but still rather remote goal of rock mechanics.1 In principle, a slope analysis is possible provided the original state of effective stress in the ground is known and the shear strength of the earth material can be clearly defined. In a macroscopically continuous earth medium such as soil, the two basic ingredients of the stability analysis in most cases can be assessed with sufficient approximation. A much less favorable situation exists when the slope is composed of a macroscopically discontinuous medium such as rock mass containing one or more sets of geological planar structures. In such a case, both the original effective stresses and the overall shear strength of the mass are much more difficult to determine. As for the former, it is only recently that certain calculation methods and solutions concerning the stress distribution2 and the seepage forces3 in a discontinuous medium have been proposed. As the strength behavior of the rock mass is concerned, much valuable effort has been made in recent years toward reaching a proper understanding of the phenomenon of rock mass failure under stress. Probably one of the most complete investigations of the problem to date has recently been made at the University of Illinois. The study resulted in establishing a first useful working hypothesis of the shear behavior of a regularly jointed rock mass, proposed by Patton in 1966.4 The main purpose of the work described in this chapter is to establish a more general framework for the shear behavior of rock mass, one that would be directly related to some basic rock parameters and would also

All types of commercial phosphate rock produced throughout the world contain fluorine in quantities ranging from approximately 0.4 to 1.3 per cent in the Curacao and Christmas Island phosphates to 3.1 to 4.2 per cent in the phosphates of the United States and North Africa1. For a given type of rock, the fluorine content is usually roughly proportional to the phosphorus content. Significance of Fluorine in Phosphate Rock On the basis of chemical and X-ray diffraction studies, Hendricks and co-workers2 concluded that fluorapatite, Cal10F2(PO4)6, is the essential phosphatic constituent of the commercial types of domestic phosphate rock. On the other hand, Bredig and co-workers3 have recently advanced the opinion, also based on X-ray diffraction studies, that the mineral phosphates usually contain carbon dioxide in the apatite lattice, and that the phosphate rocks of the United States are really fluorcarbonate apatites. However, the domestic types of phosphate rock do not seem to differ greatly from coarsely crystalline fluorapatite in their behavior toward chemical reagents in general, and for the purpose of this paper it will suffice to consider fluorapatite as being the essential phosphatic constituent of these types of rock. The available data1 indicate that the different commercial types of domestic phosphate rock usually contain about 12 to 52 per cent more fluorine than theoretically is required to form fluorapatite with all the phosphorus. Calcium fluoride (fluorite) has been definitely identified in only a very few of the samples that have been examined1,2.
