Through a progressive laboratory and pilot-plant program Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp has analyzed and corrected mine drainage pollution problems at all of its coal mines. In conducting this program, the company found no "typical" drainage discharge. Each discharge point at each mine was unique, so that varied approaches were needed to eliminate stream pollution. To illustrate the variety of these approaches, the treatment of drainage from foul, discharge points at three mines in Pennsylvania will be considered here. The flows and critical analyses of the drainage sources and treated effluents arc shown in Table I. Hydrated Lime Works at Thompson Borehole The discharge stream from the Thompson bore- hole at the Vesta No. 5 mine flowed into a small branch creek where it created a "yellowboy" deposit and affected aquatic life. Investigation indicated that hydrated lime would neutralize the acid and precipitate ferric iron without aeration. Treatment of the 150.000-gpd flow, however, created about 4000 gpd of wet sludge for which there was no nearby accumulation site. With State approval, this sludge was deposited through an unused borehole into an abandoned section of the Vesta No. 6 mine several miles away.

Argentina's oil production continues in its upward trend. The year 1940 closed with an important increase over 1939; that is, 1,996,371 bbl., or 10.72 per cent. The Government oil fields (Y.P.F.) are responsible for these results, as their total output was 12,474,655 bbl., which compared with the 10,222, 533 bbl. produced in 1939 represent an increase of 2,252,122 bbl., or 22.03 per cent. Fields operated by private companies yielded 8,134,882 bbl., against 8,390,633 bbl. in 1939, a decrease of 255,751 bbl. (3.04 per cent). To the total of 20,609,538 bbl. produced in 1940 in Argentina, the Comodoro Rivadavia field contributed 14,976,222 bbl.; Plaza Huincul, 1,275,814 bbl.; the Province of Salta, 1,845,1977 bbl. and the Province of Mendoza, 2,51I,475 bbl. Because of a widely recognized association between breccia pipes of one form or another and many important copper deposits, conditions under which breccia pipes develop have been of great scientific interest for many years. Since these phenomena first attracted attention, many theories have been advanced to explain their origin. This is not unexpected, since it is likely that they have been formed by and under a wide range of conditions. Moreover, the entire subject is confused by the fact that the term breccia pipe is applied to a wide variety of occurrences. To discuss any part of the subject intelligently, therefore, it is necessary to start with definitions of the terms used. In their discussion of the Toquepala deposit, Richard and Courtright have carefully defined the terms they have used in their presentation of a very logical geo- logical history of Toquepala breccias. This is a real contribution, as there is no reference in the literature known to the writer where the history of a series of breccia pipe epochs, confined essentially within one channelway, may be read with the degree of certainty that appears to be possible at Toquepala.

An investigation of the recovery of finely-divided cassiterite and silica particles less than 1 µm (1200 mesh) in size has been carried out using packed and fluidized beds. The bed particles used included cassiterite and silica particles ranging from 44 to 210 µm (325 to 70 mesh). Effects of various system parameters on the recovery and selectivity of cassiterite fines were investigated. System parameters included pH of the slurry solution, superficial velocity, slurry concentration, and bed particle sizes. High recoveries of cassiterite fines were obtained at pH 4.0 and slow slurry flow rates. In a packed bed system, recovery of cassiterite fines was greater than 95%, while that of silica fines under the same conditions was about 35%. Although the total recovery per pass is not as good as the packed bed, the fluidized bed system exhibits good recovery in general and an excellent selectivity of cassiterite fines. There is an optimum superficial velocity, vo, for the rate of fine particle uptake and the apparent rate constant has the form of Kvo1/2- K'vo, where K and K' are system constants.

Mr. Lyman's sympathetic and discriminating analysis, accompanied with abundant illustrative details of Prof. Lesley's remarkably versatile and fruitful career, completes the picture imperfectly sketched in the present abstract. Copies of the pamphlet may be obtained at the office of the Institute.] The subject of this sketch was born in Philadelphia, September 17,1819, and graduated in 1838 from the University of Pennsylvania. His purpose of pursuing theological studies being hindered by the condition of his health, he took a subordinate position in the geological survey of Pennsylvania under Henry D. Rogers. His work there began in the sphere of topographical and geological map-making in which he was afterwards so eminent; and a map which he made of one field in 1840, before he was 21 years old, received high praise from Prof. Rogers in his official report of that year.

The Bureau of Mines developed a detector for controlling sorting devices to separate the copper-bearing fragments from the barren portion of Michigan native copper and western prophyry copper ores. A successful sorter could be used to preconcentrate the ore and eliminate costly hoisting or hauling of waste. An induction balance unit was developed and used in sorting tests on crushed sized - 2.5 + 1.3-cm (- 1 + 112- in.) ores from the Kingston (0.9% Cu) and Centennial (1.6% Cu) mines of Upper Michigan. Concentrates of 4.0% and 7.5% Cu, respectively, were obtained at recoveries of 85 and 80% of the copper in the feed. Eighty percent of the sorted ore was rejected as tailing. Sorting larger fragments improved the separation efficiency. Tests on - 10+ 5-cm (- 4 +2-in.) sized Kingston (1.6% Cu) and Centennial (2.1 % Cu) ore samples yielded concentrates of 4.3 and 4.5% Cu, respectively, with corresponding recoveries of 92 and 91 %. A bout 60% of the sorted ore was discarded as tailing. Porphyry copper sulfide ores also responded to electronic sorting but at a lower separation efficiency. Sorting response was affected by the degree of segregation.

IN a study of the cold-rolling characteristics of iron-base alloys with 3 to 12 pct Al, the influence of aluminum content on the cold-rolling textures was evaluated. This work was undertaken to determine if binary iron-aluminum alloys possessed cold-rolling textures similar to other body-centered-cubic alloys and to contribute additional information on the effect of solute concentration on the cold- rolling textures. Gradual changes in cold-rolling textures with an increase in solute content have been observed in copper1 and in titanium.2 Iron-base alloys containing 3.0, '6.0, and 12.0 pct aluminum were vacuum-induction-melted in a magnesia crucible and permanent-mold cast. The materials used were high-purity electrolytic iron and 99.99 pct grade aluminum. Each ingot was 1 in. square in cross section by 12 in. in height. The bottom half of each ingot was soaked for 1 hr at 1000°C and rolled at 1000°C to a thickness of 0.055 in. with the long axis of the ingot parallel to the rolling direction. The strip was reheated between passes to maintain a rolling temperature of 1000°C.

The first of two initial 650-mw units of the Paradise Steam Station, located on the banks of the Green River in the south-central portion of the western Kentucky coal basin, is scheduled for operation in late fall of 1962. This plant will be the eighth large-capacity, modern station built by TVA in a series starting with Johnsonville, operated first in 1951. During the subsequent ten years, unit sizes have increased from a capability of 125 mw to 650 mw at Paradise. This new unit will take its place in a power system that serves an area of about 80,000 sq miles with a present installed capacity of over 12,000 mw. Upon completion of the Paradise units and other additional hydro and steam units presently under construction, the system capacity will have reached over 15,000 mw. Projected load estimates indicate that this system will provide a margin of slightly under 10% of dependable capacity above peak demand at that time. One Paradise 650-mw unit at that time will represent approximately 4yc of the total system installed capacity.

DIGGING of veins I have written of, and the timbering of shafts, tunnels, drifts, and other excavations, and the art of surveying. I will now speak first of all, of the iron tools with which veins and rocks are broken, then of the buckets into which the lumps of earth, rock, metal, and other excavated materials are thrown, in order that they may be drawn, conveyed, or carried out. Also, I will speak of the water vessels and drains, then of the machines of different kinds,1 and lastly of the maladies of miners. And while all these matters are being described accurately, many methods of work will be explained. There are certain iron tools which the miners designate by names of their own, and besides these, there are wedges, iron blocks, iron plates, hammers, crowbars, pikes, picks, hoes, and shovels. The literature concerning the remelting of alunlinum and its alloys is very rich. Unfortunately the majority of the papers on this subject have no scientific value, for the theories or explanations are too often in opposition to the laws of physical chemistry. Furthermore only a few of the methods of purification are considered in the literature. Hence it has seemed necessary to the author to sketch a general theory of the purification of secondary aluminum. The purpose of the purification is to eliminate the impurities that the charges, and the atmosphere of the furnaces bring into the bath during the successive remelt-ings. Indeed scrap as well as metal can be used when soiled with oil, greases, water, or others, if it has been sufficiently dried and contains oxides. At the melting point of the metal, the oils and greases are decomposed into their constituent elements H², O2, H²O, co², CO, CH,, and others. These gases are added to the corresponding gases in the atmosphere of the furnace. The impurities introduced into the metal during the remelting will accordingly be the products resulting from the action of these gases on the liquid bath. The quantity of hydrogen that is soluble in aluminum and its alloys is given by the relation of sieverts3 as a function of its partial pressure PH2 in the atmosphere m = K vPH² [I] where K is a constant, which depends only upon the temperature and increases with it. The experiments of Rijntgen and Braun4, RÖntgen and M611er5, Bircum-shaw6 and Winterhagerl have rendered it possible to determine the value of K, when the temperature is less than 1.000°C. One obtains: log K = - 4,702.5T + o 238 [2] Besides its usual significance, the term Ph~ represents also the internal pressure of dissolved hydrogen, since in the equilibrium, that is1 when no gas exchange Occurs between the two phases, the Pressures of hydrogen in the metal and in the atmosphere must be equal. Eq I shows that when the partial pressure of H2 increases the amount of dissolved hydrogen in equilibrium increases, and that, if the contrary Occurs, the quantity of H² should diminish. However, if for any reason the diffusion of hydrogen is hindered and the total amount of dissolved gas remains constant while the temperature decreases, the internal pressure of H² increases until it reaches the value of the hydrostatic pressure. At this point, bubbles of hydrogen appear in the bath and escape out of it. The amount of hydrogen in the metal is then limited by a a depending On the hydro- static pressure, which is practically equal to one atmosphere. Six years of laboratory study, followed by three years of mill operation treating more than 10,000 tons of ore, have established the flotation of oxidized zinc ores with fatty amines as an efficient process. Recently the method has been applied with success to partially oxidized sulphide ores. In this paper the authors give an account of their research and the milling results obtained in Sardinia since 1951. CONCENTRATION of oxidized copper and lead ores by flotation has been practiced for 30 years, but flotation of oxidized zinc ores has remained unsolved until a few years ago. This problem is, however, of great importance in mining districts where large tonnages of oxidized zinc ores exist in underground mines or in dumps. Some sulphide ores also possess a degree of oxidation high enough to justify recovery of oxide zinc minerals. Various attempts have been made to float the zinc carbonate, smithsonite. It is well known' that smithsonite can be collected with fatty acids, but as the predominant gangue constituents, limestone and dolomite. are floatable with the same reagents, fatty acids are difficult to use. Gaudin has shown,' on mixture of pure minerals, that smithsonite can be floated with higher xanthates, or better, with higher mercaptans. Another procedure, briefly mentioned by Davis," consists in sulphidizing the ore, activating the zinc carbonate with copper sulphate, and floating with ordinary xanthates. This process was attempted in the writers' laboratory in 1946, but results were erratic. It has since been taken up by Italian engineers and is in operation on certain types of ores. Two other research projects should be mentioned. In 1942 Erlenmeyer and others' floated synthetic mixtures of smithsonite and gangue minerals with hydroxyquinoline, an analytical reagent for zinc. On the other hand, Bunge, Fine, and Legsdin published in 19465 Some interesting results obtained on Missouri oxidized zinc ores. With sodium oleate as a collector and a combination of sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, and citric acid as a limestone depressor, they secured, after four cleaning operations, a good grade of concentrate. With many ores this reagent combination lacks adequate selectivity. In 1939 M. Rey initiated a program of research on this important problem. Work was pursued first at the School of Mines in Liége, Belgium"' and later in Paris in the laboratories of Société Miniére et Mbtallurgique de Penarroya and Société Minerais et Métaux. Reagents used in the beginning were higher xanthates and mercaptans, later fatty amines. Sulphidization with sodium sulphide was found necessary. These conditions make possible the flotation of zinc carbonate and zinc silicate. Two milling plants were put in operation in Sardinia in 1950 and several others are now contemplated." Two Canadian mining companies, Noranda Mines, Ltd., and Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Ltd., have agreed to buy $500,000 worth of shares each in Anglo-American Exploration Ltd., controllers of thousands of acres of possible oil-rich land in southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Samuel Clarence Nickle, Sr., reported as possible president of the newly formed exploration company, said that $20 million in assets have been accumulated by the firm, mainly in the Williston basin in parts of the Dakotas and Montana, aid extending into Southern Manitoba and most of Saskatchewan. The M. A. Hanna Co. reported a record profit for the seventh consecutive year with total 1951 profit reaching $14,081. The company handled a record 16.8 million tons of iron ore in 1951, compared with 14.9 million tons in 1950. The company is also preparing to open four iron ore mines in the Lake Superior district which are expected to produce more than 5 million tons annually by 1954. The company built two new iron ore concentrating plants at Mesabi range mines in 1951,a with a third plant going into, operations soon.

The new, internationally-owned Savage River Mines iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing project, built and operated by Pickands Mather & Co. International, was dedicated March 6 at Port Latta, Tasmania, Australia. Construction of the $79 million project began in 1965 and involved an open pit mine and concentrating plant plus a complete town for about 350 employees at Savage River; a 53-mile pipeline to transport the concentrates; a pelletizing plant and shipping facilities at Port Latta, which is on Bass Strait separating Tasmania from the Australian mainland. The project has a rated capacity of 2.25 million Ltpy of high-grade magnetite pellets, which will be sold to five Japanese steel companies under 20-year contracts. The open pit mine is located in the central portion of the Savage River deposits. Mining equipment, capable of moving 10 million tpy of ore and overburden, consists of four 6-cu yd electric shovels and 12 50-ton trucks. The concentrating plant, with a design capacity of 5 million tpy of ore, will use magnetic separators to upgrade the ore, which averages 38% iron, to a concentrate averaging 67% iron.

Much work has been done recently on the lead-antimony system' in connection with lead-rich alloys of commercial importance containing less than 20 per cent. antimony. Dean, Zickrick and Nix have called attention to the perpetuation in the literature of several erroneous data, such as a eutectic temperature of 228° C. at 12.5 per cent. antimony, instead of 247° at 13 per cent. The series is given as a classic example of a straight eutectiferous series in such late books as those of Heyn and Grossmann,2 Jeffries and Archer,3 Guillet and Portevin,4 Pulsifer,5 Rosenhain,6 and Liddell,7 as well as the somewhat earlier works of Hofman (1918), Wang (1909), and Williams (1920). The work of Dean has definitely shown a solid solution of antimony in lead at about 2.5 per cent. antimony. While lecturing to a class in general metallurgy at the University of Idaho, the writer had the students prepare a series of lead-antimony alloys for the purpose of illustrating methods of thermal analysis.
