THROUGHOUT the Colonial era, Philadelphia was easily the leading city of North America, and it still held that position at the end of the period, with a population of about 25,000, though closely pressed by Boston, which had slightly over 20,000, and New York, which had nearly as many. It was the center of a region in which mineral industry was important. Thomas Rutter's bloomery, built in the Schuylkill valley in 1716, was quickly followed by many others, and during the Colonial period at least 20 blast furnaces, 45 forges, and iron- works of other types were built in eastern Pennsylvania, which easily led all the other colonies in iron manufacture. During the Revolutionary period others were erected as far west as Fort Loudon, in the Cumberland c alley.6 After 1800 the rapid development of the anthracite mining industry profoundly affected Philadelphia's development, since transportation of the coal was then necessarily by water,, and the streams of the anthracite regions mostly flowed into either the Schuylkill or the Delaware Rivers. With an abundant near-by supply of coal and iron, with the seat of government, which had been there since 1774, and with a national Bank established there in 1791, one would have seemed safe in prophesying, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, that Philadelphia would permanently remain the leading city of the United States. Education in Philadelphia was at first wholly in the hands of the Quakers, who had established a "Public School" there in 1689, but in November 1739 George Whitefield, who had created a sensation in England by his preaching, though only 24 years old, passed through Philadelphia on his way to Georgia to found an orphan school there. IN discussing the influence of a content of gases on metals and alloys we should probably first consider the physical and chemical conditions under which these gases may be present. By a chemical analysis, such as the total extraction of gases from the liquid metal by melting in a graphite crucible in vacuo, we find only the sum of gaseous chemical elements contained in the metal in any form and no reference is made to the special form under which they have been present previously. CONDITION OF GASES IN METALS In considering. gases in metals we may first turn our attention to gases simply dissolved. Because the solubility of almost, any gas decreases suddenly at the freezing point, most of them are released during solidification, developing rise of ingots and blowholes. If only a little gas is dissolved in the molten metal the size of such blowholes may be miscroscopical, or even submicroscopical, resulting in, a certain reduction of the notched-bar impact test values. Hydrogen is believed to become less soluble as the temperature is lowered and therefore increasing quantities of this gas may be evolved during cooling between the freezing point and room temperature, leading to unsoundness of the ingot at weak spots; i.e., at the grain boundaries. This gas at the grain boundaries probably is present at high pressure and therefore impairs the mechanical properties to a degree similar to that found in the hydrogen embrittlement of copper. Usually we may trace such gases by observing rising ingots, or at least by the formation of a characteristic pattern of small grooves upon etching. Another condition of gases present within metals is that of chemical compounds, the most common being oxides and mostly present as slag inclusions of various kinds. If such oxides are insoluble in the liquid metal and emulsify with it, we find microscopical or submicroscopical slag inclusions distributed homogeneously throughout the metal and spread through the whole mass of the crystals. APPROACHES TO VALUATION Value and costs are two terms basic to financial analysis which cause, perhaps, the greatest amount of misunderstanding in mine valuation studies. When discussing the value of an asset or the costs of producing a product, it is absolutely essential that the speaker define the terms being used. There are many types of value and many categories of costs. Without specific accompanying definitions, value and cost data are not very meaningful. Value refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of property. Some of the types of value which might be encountered in a mine valuation study are: 1) Market value 2) Full cash value 3) Salvage value 4) Replacement value 5) Capitalized value 6) Book value 7) Assessed value 8) Insured value Each of these has a specific meaning which can be applied to determine a monetary amount in a specific situation. The major item of interest here is the broader question of "what is the value of the mine?" or "what is the mine worth?" In this case, we are speaking of market value. Market value is the value (price) established in a public market by ex- changes between a willing buyer and a willing seller when neither is under duress to complete the transaction. Market value fluctuates with the degree of willingness of the buyer and seller and with the conditions of the sale. The use of the term market suggests the idea of barter. During the course of a study on the periodic precipitation (Liesegang phenomenon) of water vapor bubbles in solid silver, some interesting observations were made concerning the formation and growth of these bubbles. Under certain conditions it was found that the bubbles which formed in the single crystals led to the formation of large blisters ad cracks, and when poly crystalline specimens were used grain boundary cracking was observed. These two phenomena were examined in some detail, and it was found that an important step in the formation of the blisters and grain boundary cracks was the impingement of neighboring bubbles. DURING the study of Liesegang precipitation in solid silver,' some interesting observations were made concerning the formation and growth of water vapor bubbles. The bubbles were formed by annealing oxygen-saturated silver in hydrogen. Because of the similarity of this phenomenon to the hydrogen embrittlement of tough pitch copper,' it is known in the literature" as the hydrogen embrittlement of silver. In some respects it appears that the hydrogen embrittlement of silver is similar to the processes of hydrogen attack of steel5 and blister formation.' Hydrogen attack results from the high-temperature reaction of hydrogen with dissolved carbon or carbides in the steel to form methane (usually at grain boundaries). Blister formation occurs in steel and other materials as a result of hydrogen produced by corrosion, pickling, and so forth. Because of these similarities, some speculations were made concerning these other processes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Water vapor bubbles were formed in 99.999+, 99.99+, and 99.9 pct Ag by annealing in a partial pressure of oxygen (pq) until saturated and then in a partial pressure of hydrogen (pH,). The hydrogen diffuses into the silver and reacts with the dissolved oxygen to form water vapor which precipitates in the form of bubbles. The specimens were then sectioned, silver-plated, mounted in cold-setting plastic, ground and polished through a preliminary polishing, and finally chemically polished.' The bubbles were visible without etching.

Those engaged in pumping from shafts, or other mining works, may be intereited in the following suggestion of what is believed to be a novel method of raising moderate quantities of water against a considerable head. It is admitted that the ordinary Cornish pump, as generally used in mines, is hard to beat, on account of both its extreme simplicity and its easy adaptation to the requirements of mining; its great drawback, however, being the enormous weight of heavy rods and successive plungers that have to be kept in motion, not to mention the necessary " balance-" and " angle-bobs," with all their accompanying friction and wear and tear. It is contended that the following method would, to a great extent, overcome these drawbacks ; though, no doubt, many old miners may say it would also introduce new ones. Possibly, this may be the case. It is only desired that this pump may be judged upon its merits. The chief novelty of the method consists in employing the almost unlimited pressure obtainable from a high column of water, augmented, if necessary, by a hydraulic ram or press at the top, to work a small-diameter piston or plunger at the bottom of a shaft or well. This high-pressure plunger, indicated at E, in Fig. 1, transmits power direct to a larger-diameter plunger, F, constituting, together with the ordinary H-piece, valves, and wind-bore, the actual pump, which raises the water, by column C, to the adit-level or other discharge, placed as far as possible below the head of the high-pressure column A and ram W. It will thus be seen, that it is only necessary to maintain a prmsnre on the small piston, E, equal to that on the larger one, F, by means of the small but high column of water, A, in order to cause F to descend, and thus force the water up through C. These are of Pliocene age and consist of several members of the Bone Valley formation.1 Physically the phosphate-bearing formation, locally called the "matrix," varies in thickness from nothing to about 25 ft., usually averages 10 ft., and consists mainly of clay, quartz and phosphate pebble, the latter particles varying in size from colloidal to one inch diameter. The pebbles range in color from dark gray, through white, to cream, and in hardness from that which must be broken with a hammer to that which can be scratched with the fingernail. They assay from 66 to 80 per cent bone phosphate of lime (called "B.P.L." in the trade) or tricalcium phosphate (Ca3P20s) and are secondary apatites. They form from 15 to 50 per cent by weight of the matrix, Over the matrix lies a varying thickness (5 to 40 ft.) of overburden composed of quartz and clay. Briefly, mining consists of two operations2 in open pits about 200 ft. wide by ½ mile or more in length. In the first step overburden is removed by large electric draglines at the rate of about 700 cu. yd. per hour. This is followed closely by hydraulic mining of the matrix at the rate of about 300 cu. yd. per hour. This matrix yardage is moved from an improvised sump in the floor of the pit to an ore-dressing plant, some-times a mile distant, by one, two or three "pit-cars" (pumping units) working on a 12-in. pipe line called the "rock line" to distinguish it from the high-pressure water line feeding the hydraulic giants, which is known as the "hydraulic line." Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NPDES are discussed with emphasis on the ‘toxic’ or priority pollutants, and EPA’s philosophy on the control of these pollutants. The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCRA regulations that will effect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

Of all the technology available to the iron blast furnace operator, raw materials preparation [(Fig. 1)] is by far the most important. Superior raw materials have been basic to the success of the Japanese steel industry, and they are just as essential to the American steel industry in winning its competitive battle against foreign government subsidized steel imports. Therefore, the mine operator and the ore beneficiation engineer must strive to produce the highest quality raw materials possible to meet the precise demands of the modem blast furnace and steel plant.

Granduc lies near the Alaskan border in British Columbia, about 600 miles (960 km) north of Vancouver. Prospecting in the area must take place in the short summer months of fog and rain because the winter is bitter cold, with snowfall up to 960 inches (24.4 m) accompanied by avalanches. Despite these difficulties, the mineral ized area was discovered in the 1920's. By 1956, Newmont Mining Corporation had developed mineable ore reserves estimated at 32,500,000 tons of 1.93% copper. Newmont and ASARCO, in a joint venture, then began development of the ore body, which was partially covered by glaciers. It was apparent a concentrator could not be built at the mine site where overland access was impossible due to the weather conditions and the terrain. Years of engineering studies of all possible access routes finally dictated the driving of an 11 mi long (17.6 km) tunnel passing under three glaciers and three mountain ranges to the nearest feasible concentrator site at Tide Lake. Even then, a mountain road subject to an average snowfall of 800 in. (20. 3 m) had to be built 32 mi (51 krn) from the concentrator through Alaska to Stewart, British Columbia, the nearest port. At Stewart, which is located at the head of a fjord 120 mi (192 krn) from the Pacific Odean, a fully equipped marine terminal was built. The tunnel, the lifeline between mine and mill, was to be driven from both ends; however, in 1965, an avalanche occurred at the Leduc portal, killing 26 crew members and wrecking much of the camp. The tunnel was then driven from one heading adjacent to the concentrator site at Tide Lake, a distance of 53,744 ft (16,381 m) to a point under the ore body. The remote location, type of terrain, and bad weather made supply of crews, equipment, and construction materials difficult; but in spite of these extremely adverse conditions, the tunnel crews set many world records. Mineralization throughout the ore zone is generally uniform in grade and composition and is primarily chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite associated with pyrite. Mining is mainly by sublevel caving. After blasting, rubber-tired load-and-haul equipment moves from level to level by means of an internal connecting ramp system on a 15% slope. The production of crude oil in Germany during 1933 totaled about 1,669,521 bbl., a slight increase over the 1,608,558 bbl. produced in 1932. This is an extension of a yearly increase which has continued uninterruptedly since 1928. The 1933 increase in production is due chiefly to developments in the Nienhagen field. The production of the Wietze and Oberg fields remained rather stable, while the Oelheim-Eddesse and Volkenroda fields showed decreases. The paper describes the construction of a clay pad in Southern California. The pad consisted of a mixture of in situ soil and imported clay products. The paper summarizes design considerations. Laboratory permeability tests performed on samples removed from the pad formed part of the quality control requirement of the State of California Water Quality Control Board. The paper presents statistical analysis of the data (about 70 permeability tests in total) and their significance in controlling seepage losses. The results obtained from an investigation of the first pad-area after completion of the leach cycle are presented and discussed. Results from visual observations and laboratory tests are presented.

WHEN iron is dipped in molten zinc at temperatures in the range 840" to 930°F, the two metals react to form layers of Fe-Zn compounds which adhere to the iron. At the galvanizing tem- perature, the successive layers are:' y (Fe5Zn21), 61 (FeZn;), and 5 (FeZn13), in conformity with the Fe-Zn constitution diagram. ROOM and pillar coal mining methods employed in the United States keep the roof at original height by leaving untouched pillars of coal in the face area. But, German coal mines of the Ruhr district are exclusively operated on the longwall system. With this method the whole length of the coal face advances and the roof in the face area sinks 10 to 15 pct of seam thickness. Behind the face the roof may drop 50 to 80 pct of seam thickness due to the high rock pressures encountered at average mining depth of 2250 ft. Mining depth is increasing 20 to 30 ft per year.

In February 1913, Prof. L. C. Graton and Dr. Joseph Murdochl presented to the American Institute of Mining Engineers a notable contribution to economic geology under the title The Sulphide Ores of Copper. The value of the work was recognized by mine operators, and Mr. Graton was assisted in his plan to extend his investigations, by the organization of a commission to undertake a "secondary enrichment investigation."
