CONSIDERABLE experimental data has been published in recent years on a few directionally solidified aluminum base eutectic alloys. The mechanical properties of A1-Al3Ni eutectic have been studied by Lemkey, Hertzberg, and Ford1',2 and Salkind et a1.3 where the alloy has been demonstrated to behave as a whisker reinforced composite with superior properties over many aluminum alloys. IMD__________________ possesses excellent microstructural stability to 508°C. The effect of lamellar structure in A1-CuA12 eutectic was compared3 to the rod-like structure in the A1-Al3Ni eutectic, and was found to be better in low cycle fatigue. This was rationalized3 by postulating that a lamellar reinforcement was more efficient at blocking lateral plastic flow than a rod-like rein-forcement. The purpose of this study is to explore eutectic strengthening in other aluminum base alloys. The Al-Pd system5 forms a eutectic with aluminum and the intermetallic compound A13Pd at 25 wt pct Pd, and has a melting point of 615°C. A13Pd has an orthorhom-bic structure and transforms to hexagonal Pd2A13 at 785°C. Growth characteristics, compression yield strength, creep rupture, and microstructural stability of directionally solidified and as-cast alloys are investigated. Eutectic ingots having a nominal composition of 25 wt pct Pd were prepared by first compacting 1/2 in. diam by a in. high pellets from 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.99 pct Pd powders. The pellets were then levitation cast into 1/4 in. diam by 2 in. long copper molds. BRITISH success in extracting significant quantities of germanium from gas works flue dusts has been one of the prime forces in promoting similar research in the United States. Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. and Pennsylvania Coal & Coke Co. are two of the larger U. S. firms with germanium from flue dust research programs. British interest in germanium started in 1933 when V. M. Goldschmidt reported that some coals from the Yard Seam of Northumberland and Durham contained 30 to 50 ppm of germanium.

The sampling of precious metal deposits entails inherent problems due to the low mineral abundances, high mineral specific gravities, skewed grade distributions and wide ranges of mineral particle sizes. Sampling practices and precautions are discussed with particular attention to each of the tripartite stages of sampling - sample acquisition, sample preparation and sample assaying. Practical examples of approaches to the sampling problem are given and some examples of significant sources of error are provided from gold and silver deposits in North America.

An extensive reconnaissance survey of bentonitic clays in Egypt was carried out from 1982 to 1984. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, electron microscopy, and physical property evaluations were used to identify the mineralogy and assess their industrial potential. Samples were collected from a number of localities, namely Qasr El-Sagha (Fayum), Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road (Western Desert), and Qattamia area (Eastern Desert). This paper reviews the geological occurrence, the mineralogical and chemical characteristics, and the potential utilization of these deposits.

In the hydrometallurgical circuit, many phase separation steps are usually necessary. Typical steps are pregnant liquor - leach residue separation by counter- current decantation or continuous vacuum filtration, clarification of liquids prior to precipitation, ion exchange or solvent extraction, dewatering of final product, etc. The paper discusses the more recent advances in these areas and considers general operating parameters and cost factors. In addition, emphasis is placed on future needs because of the growing importance and necessity of hydrometallurgical processing of minerals.

In 1975, the US produced 10 900 tons (12,000 st) of U3O8 from ores whose grade ranged from a low of 0.160% to a high of 0.196% U3O8. By the early 1980's if the current mining projects described here are allowed to go on stream, Australia will be able to produce at least 10 900 tons of U3O8 annually from ores whose grade ranges from a low of 0.150%to a high of 2.300%. As pointed out in the previous article, this initial rate of production could have been reached now-giving an immense boost to the depressed Australian economy. So, let's have a close look at current mining projects.

Particles present in mineral processing systems that are termed ultrafine are those that are small enough to be unaffected by gravity or the flow conditions imposed on the pulp. As such, their interaction with one another and with other larger particles are controlled by specific attractive and repulsive colloidal or surface interactions. Electrostatic repulsion between ultrafines is dominated by surface potential, double layer thickness and specific adsorption potential effects - controlled by pH, salt and complexing ion concentrations. Attraction due to van der Waals interactions must be assessed in terms of bulk and surface coating effects and of particle size and shape. The net effect of attraction and repulsion must finally be related to the average kinetic energy of particles in the real system.

INTRODUCTION Spoil pile slope failures can have costly consequences. In- stability in the form of a single major event or as a recurring problem can 'mean lost production, lost resources and damaged mining equipment. In extreme but not uncomnon cases, a major spoils slide can force the closure and abandonment of a pit. Slope stability is affected by mine operating practices as we1 l as geologic conditions and material parameters. Mine operators can enhance spoil pile stability through constructive changes in their operations. Attention to the causes of in- stability can lead to development of operating practices tailored to site specific problems. Action aimed at limiting future instability is frequently more cost effective than continually "coping" with unstable spoils. The effect of mine operations on material properties is often overlooked because the "data" are not easily quantified nor input directly into stability analysis equations. We have found, however, that miners' experience with their own operation, as well as data pooled from similar operations, yields relation- ships which can be utilized to solve stability problems. The repetitive nature of area type surface coal mines with successive spoil pile rows further enables the development of useful site specific relationships. Stability problems can be mitigated by applying these relationships.
