MANGANESE ore is a true jack-of-all trades among industrial minerals, its only possible rival being iron ore. It is used in porcelain enamel, dry batteries, building brick, glazed pottery, floor tile, plastics, welding rods, chemicals, and varnish. You may be reading this through spectacles decolorized with manganese, and the light bulb above you contains some of this element. GEOLOGY Nearly all commercial manganese oxide deposits are of secondary origin; that is, they are concentrated by weathering from other manganese minerals more sparsely distributed in veins. The oxide minerals usually form irregular masses but in some places (Russia) they occur as beds of varying thickness and purity. Some manganese oxide bodies occur in soft gravel or clay formations but in other places the minerals are found in the form of veins and rounded nodules in limestone and other hard rocks. The geologic features of manganese deposits closely resemble those of iron deposits. Classification of the deposits is shown in the following table: I. Computerized preventive maintenance has been a long sought goal in many industries. People have firmly believed that proper implementation of such a system can result in tremendous saving of money. However, the preventive part has always been left out without realizing it due to the inflexibility of coping with environmental changes. With this in mind, the Iron Ore Company of Canada has developed a computerized system which schedules maintenance jobs preventively.

In order to reduce the complexity of mechanisms influencing rock. fragmentation by blasting a simulation approach is proposed, using the capabilities of microcomputer interactive graphics. Situations involving cratering end bench blasting are simulated, and both jointed and intact rocks can be subjected to explosive action, taking into consideration its breakage mechanisms. Size analysis curves relating rock distribution before and after the blasts are determined and compared with field data.

Microscopic pyrites are present in all West Virginia coals. Sizes of these pyrites range from 0.1 µ 500 µ (1/2 mm) , and four types are noted: massive, patches, framboids, and isolated crystals. The relative and absolute abundances of the four types vary from seam to seam, and these distributions have a marked effect on the ease with which a seam may be cleaned of pyritic sulfur.

CALAMINE is one of the semiminerals that have great similarity to the metals. It is a very heavy mineral earth of a yellowish color. It is found in Germany near the lead mines and in Italy in a mountain between Milan and Como. It is also found, as I have heard, in other places, as at Fosini in the territory of Siena. I believe that it is almost certain that some exists there because there are many other kinds of minerals there- about, although none is mined there in these times. But this does not mean that it could not be mined or that there is not some there that is real. Someone says that he med to melt what he could find with copper [36v]

Specimens of copper-bearing quartz monzonite were subjected to a plane shock wave simulating high compressional stresses in the proximity of a borehole wall. Fragmentation was studied as a function of stress levels between 1.6 GPa (23 x 104 psi) and 7.3 GPa(105.8x104 psi) and pulse durations ranging from 1.1 µs to 6.9 us. Both explosive pressure and pulse duration were shown to have a strong effect on particle size distribution. While the effect of pressure is well recognized, the effect of pulse duration indicates that ultimate fragmentation increases with the time of application of a plane wave pulse. At high pulse durations, degree of fragmentation is more sensitive to changes in pressure than at low pulse durations.

UNTIL the fundamentals of the physical behavior of rocks are completely understood, progress in block caving must proceed upon a cut and try basis. Criteria of rock failure are many and varied. If a rock mass behaved as a homogeneous isotropic solid, the problem would be greatly simplified. In practice we are never dealing with isotropic or homogeneous rock but with one that has been acted upon by geologic processes and which has pre-existing planes of failure. Under these complex conditions we do not find agreement. Actually there is little agreement between elasticians and physicists as to manner of failure in an isotropic homogeneous solid, although much progress has been made in the study of rock failure in recent years.

Utah International's Shirley Basin Mine is located in the Southeastern High Plains of Wyoming at an elevation of 7100 ft. The Shirley Basin area is a gently rolling semi-arid land. The uranium ore zone occurs at depths ranging from 270-350 ft below the surface. Overburden consists of poorly consolidated sandstones, siltstones and clays. Underground mining was begun in 1960. Conditions were made difficult by high rates of water inflow and ground support problems. Development of a solution mining or in-situ leaching technique allowed underground operation to be abandoned in 1964. Solution mining provided limited production from 1963 to July 1970. In January, 1969, large scale development of open-pit mining was begun. A 1200 tpd mill went on-stream in March, 1971.

Electrowinning U.S. 4,066,520 - Recovery of copper from copper sulfide ore. Finely divided ore concentrate is leached with moderately strong sulfurous acid to solubilize copper ions, the leach solution treated with calcium sulfite to reduce the copper ion concentration by forming copper-precipitate solids therein, the solids filtered off, and and the filter cake dewatered to obtain a slurry of copper-precipitate solids amenable to direct electrowinning of copper therefrom using a described electrolysis apparatus which utilizes high current flow with a minimum of mechanical agitation. Conquista, the uranium mining and milling complex owned jointly by Continental Oil Co. and Pioneer Nuclear, Inc., has begun operations in Falls City, Texas. The mill has been designed to produce 1.5 million lb of U3O, from 600,000 tpy of ore mined. Currently, the plant processes a maximum 2000 tpd of ore. Mine Planning Texas ore deposits are small and scattered in comparison to other uranium mining districts. Those to be mined at Conquista range from a few acres to more than 100 acres in size. Ore thickness ranges from a few inches to over 15 ft, and depth from less than 20 ft to more than 170 ft below ground surface. Distance from the mill ranges up to 35 mi.

A WIDE variety of metalliferous deposits in Peru shows a close and consistent relationship to intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. This relation- ship furnishes a clue to the composition of ore-bearing fluids and to the timing in separation of these fluids from differentiation magma. Conclusions presented here are based on ten years' study of a large number of metalliferous deposits in Peru. The most important of these areas are shown in Fig. 1.
