Insoluble residues from three sequences of Paleozoic marine evaporates (Retsof salt bed in western New York, Salado Formation in southeastern New Mexico, and Paradox Member of the Hermosa Formation in southeastern Utah) are rich in trioctahedral clays. Chlorite (clinochlore), corrensite (mixed-layer chlorite-trioctahedral smectite), talc, and illite (the only dioctahedral clay) are the dominant clay minerals; serpentine, discrete trioctahedral smectite (saponite), and interstratified talc-trioctahedral smectite are sporadically abundant. These clay-mineral assemblages differ chemically and mineralogically from those observed in most continental and normal marine rocks, which commonly contain kaolinite, dioctahedral smectite (beidellite-montmorillonite), illite, mixed-layer illite-dioctahedral smectite, and, in most cases, no more than minor quantities of trioctahedral clay minerals. The distinctive clay mineralogy in these evaporate sequences suggests a largely authigenic origin. These clay minerals are thought to have formed during deposition and early diagenesis through interaction between argillaceous detritus and Mg-rich marine evaporate brines.

SHERRIT Gordon Mines transplanted a 2000- ton mining plant and concentrator along with a town and its people 165 miles into undeveloped and almost inaccessible country in shifting its base of operations to the new mine at Lynn Lake. Faced with ultimate exhaustion of its ore bodies at Sherridon, Manitoba, the company, beginning in 1938, carried out an intensive program of prospecting and exploration in search of a new property. Late in 1945, diamond drilling of a magnetic anomaly near a minor surface expression of metallic sulphides gave promise of what has developed into the Lynn Lake nickel-copper deposit.

William Andrews Clark, former United States senator from Montana, died at his home in New York on March 2, at the age of 86, after a brief illness due to pneumonia. He was the last of the three great Montana mining magnates, Clark, Daly and Heinze. He was born in Connellsville, Pa., on Jan. 8, 1839, and in 1863 arrived in Bannock, Ida., with only five dollars, after a journey of 65 days. On reaching Idaho, he became successively a miner, teamster, machinist, railway builder, mine owner, capitalist and, in his more recent years, philanthropist and art collector.

Dispersion-containing titanium-copper alloys were prepared having mean free paths varying from 1.0 to 9.7 P. Tensile studies at room temperature and at 1000°F showed that little or no strengthening occurred when the mean free path exceeded 3 p. However, at lower values of mean free path appreczable strengthening was observed. A considerable amount of strengthening also resulted from copper in solid solution. Addition of oil to a suspension of hydrophobic coal particles can influence its dewatering characteristics. An agglomeration process occurs in which coal particles are held together by negative capillary pressure at particle/oil/water contacts. Consequently, the units round which flow can occur are enlarged and this improves dewatering parameters such as drainage rate, solids recovery, and equilibrium moisture content. This paper discusses processes which attempt to use this principle, in terms of metallurgical and economic efficiency. The discussion is augmented by results of recent experiments on the effect of oil addition to centrifuges and vacuum filters.

MUCH information concerning pegmatites which was thought to be true a few years ago has been proved false, and what is now actually known about some pegmatites is not true of many others. The erratic and seemingly unpredictable structure and variable composition of this class of mineral deposits has been widely emphasized. Even parts of the same pegmatite body exhibit marked differences in texture, mineral composition, width, and attitude. Constructive geological thinking in respect to pegmatites now aims to establish general laws rather than to stress the confusing diversity of features having no special economic significance.
