Two magnesite ores containing 3.15% and 8.73% SiO2 and a calcined magnesite product assaying 2.6% Si02 were first reduced in size to -20 mesh by roll crushing. 'They were then treated dry on a high intensity magnetic separator to reduce their silica content by rejecting iron-stained silicate minerals in the magnetic fraction and obtaining marketable magnesite or calcined magnesite as a nonmagnetic product.

Use of rock grinding media in a mill at Tennessee Copper Corp. was mentioned in the MINING ENGINEERING Annual Review. (February 1953, page 158). Because interest in use of self-grinding media continues high we asked F. M. Lewis, Superintendent of Concentration at Tennessee Copper, to supply more details on this trial, and of plans to expand use of rock media in their mills that grind marble. Here is what he reports.

Experiments indicate that simple addition of water to mixtures of untreated trona and otherwise insoluble leonardite yields a rich, black, slightly alkaline solution of concentrated humic substances. Prices of both trona from Wyoming and leonardite from South Dakota and Wyoming are very similar-$10-30 per ton.
