Under certain conditions of hot rolling and air cooling from the hot-rolling temperature, bars of a high carbon (0.40 pct C) chrome-nickel austen-itic alloy were found to show magnetism even though no ferrite or martensite could be detected by microscopic or X-yay methods. The appearance of magnetism in such alloys may come from chromium impoverishment of the austenite grains near the precipitated carbide particles. SPORADICALLY, hot-rolled bars of Silchrome 10, an exhaust valve steel, have been found to be magnetic. Because of the analysis of the alloy—0.40 pct C, 18 pct Cr, 8 pct Ni, 3 pct Si —magnetism is unexpected. Preliminary investigation showed neither martensite nor ferrite to be present; only austenite and Cr23C6. Since a literature search was fruitless, a brief study was made of the appearance of magnetism in this alloy. The only basic difference between the two heats is the nitrogen content. Permeability was measured using a Severn magnetic gauge. This instrument consists of a magnet mounted on a counterbalanced arm. A set of calibrated plugs is placed in contact with one pole of the magnet. The specimen is placed close to the other pole of the magnet. If the specimen pulls the magnet away from the plug, it has a permeability greater than that marked on the plug. This technique is swift and reproducible. Previous experience has shown that the permeabilities obtained corresponded to those obtained on a permeater with a field strength of 100 oe. Specimens from both heats were annealed at temperatures between 1700 and 2300°F. One set of specimens was water cooled and another furnace cooled. All the water-quenched specimens were non-magnetic; the furnace cooled ones were magnetic as shown in Table I with no difference being observed between the two heats. Microstructural examination of the specimens showed the expected increase in carbon solubility with increasing temperature. Carbide solution was complete at 2200°F. The specimens heated to 1900°F or below showed some carbide precipitation from the hot-rolled structure. A furnace cooled specimen from a given temperature showed less carbide out of solution than the water-quenched specimen from the next temperature below; e.g., the specimen furnace cooled from 2100°F showed less carbide out of solution than the water-quenched specimen from 2000" F. These studies indicated that the appearance of magnetism was not related to the quantity of carbon in or out of solution and it was related to precipitation at temperatures below 1700" F. A set of samples annealed and water-quenched from 2100° F was aged for 4 hr at temperatures between 1000" and 1600°F; all were non-magnetic. A second set of samples, similarly annealed, was aged 1 to 24 hr at 1200°F with the results shown in Table II. None of the latter set of specimens showed magnetism until they had been aged about 8 hr. Magnetism was quite strong after aging 24 hr. X-ray diffraction studies on several of the magnetic specimens showed that the austenite had a lattice parameter of 3.58A and that the carbide was Cr23C6. Several of these samples were electrolytically digested in 10 pct HCl in ethanol, with a current density of 0.1 amp per sq cm. None of the particles in the residue were magnetic. Accidentally, one cell was run at 1 amp per sq cm; e.g., magnetic particles were found in this residue. After careful separation, the magnetic particles were mounted on a quartz fiber and their diffraction pattern determined using a 5.73-in. Debye-Sherrer camera with CrK radiation. These particles showed a fcc structure with a lattice parameter of 3.57A. Prolonged exposure, up to 16 hr, produced no other lines on the film. The following facts seemed to be established at this time: 1) Austenite was the magnetic phase. 2) Neither ferrite nor martensite could be detected. 3) Magnetization could be produced by aging at 1200°F. One explanation of these data is that the carbide precipitation impoverishes the region immediately around the carbide particle of carbon and chromium and increases the proportion of nickel. All of these serve to increase the Curie temperature of the region around the carbide particle. If the composition change is enough, the Curie temperature will rise above room temperature. If the volume of the affected region is great enough, the magnetism will become detectable. At low aging temperatures, composition changes are great enough but the overall volume of impoverishment is quite small

Intermittent injection of gas in gas-lift pumping is a variation of the common practice in that the gas is delivered to the well for a short period, called the "on time," followed by a period during which none is admitted, called the "off time," instead of being admitted continuously at a constant rate or by intermittent flowing in which it is occasionally delivered to the well in just sufficient quantity to flow off the accumulated head of fluid. The term "gas" is used throughout this discussion but it should be remembered that in so far as the operation is concerned either air or natural gas may be used. The equipment at the well is the same as commonly used in gas-lift installations and gas may be admitted to either the tubing or the casing. It seldom occurs that all the wells on a lease can be pumped economically by intermittent injection from one header. Wells that have flow characteristics which permit their being handled together have their intake lines grouped at a central compressor station. Well groups may consist of two or more wells. The total volume of gas delivered by each group of compressors goes to one well at a time through a quick opening valve, each well connected to the header receiving its charge of gas in turn. Special cases may require a deviation from this arrangement. The distribution of the gas to the different wells is effected by an automatic timing device which operates quick-opening valves on the intake lines. The timing mechanism may be actuated by electricity, liquid or gas pressure, The essential factor in the operation of the timing mechanism is that as one intake valve is closed another must be opened. Water-operated Timing Device Timing devices operate the intake valves either directly, or indirectly by pilot valves. Of the former type one that is operated by water and has given satisfactory service is shown in Fig. 1 and can be made on the lease. The horizontal cylinder is a piece of 10-in. casing about 7 ft. long, closed at each end and free to oscillate about a fulcrum at the center.

Lead sulfide concentrates, which may include other lead concentrates, are sintered on an up-draught sintering machine without the addition of any diluting agents or fluxes. Subsequently they are melted in an oil- or gas-fired rotary furnace. The sintering and melting processes are based upon the following roast-reaction: PbS + 2 PbO = 3 Pb + SO, PbS + PbSO, =2 Pb + 2 SO, For obtaining a lead bullion free from sulfur, the sintering process is carried out in such a way that the sinter product contains a small amount of excess oxygen above that to react with the sulfides. At the end of the melting process, when the reactions are finished, the remaining small amount of oxide residues is reduced with coal to which a certain percentage of soda ash (about 1 pct of the lead bullion) is added. For the lead smelting process described neither coke nor fluxes—except soda ash—are required. This process is being utilized by a European smelter successfully and with a high lead recovery. The consumption figures for the smelting of 100 tons per day of lead concentrates are indicated. The lead content of the lead concentrates from modern ore dressing plants ranges from 65 pct to above 80 pct. In most lead smelters of the world these concentrates are smelted in a blast furnace. For blast-furnace smelting the concentrates have to be desulfurized and agglomerated by sintering. A requirement for the perfect operation of a down-draught sintering machine and of a blast furnace is a maximum lead content in the feed of 40 to 45 pct. For this reason, some lead concentrates have to be diluted by adding return slags, limestone, and possibly iron oxide and sand. As an example, 100 tons of lead concentrate with 72 pct Pb would contain 13.5 tons of gangue (including the zinc). To produce a perfect sinter with 42 pct Pb it would be necessary to add 70 tons of flux and return slag, more than five times the original weight of the gangue, to the sinter mix and blast-furnace charge. A correspondingly large amount of coke would be required in order that all of these materials reach the heat of formation and the melting temperatures of the slag (1200" to 1400°C) inside the blast furnace. The roast-reaction process presents a possibility for lead recovery without dilution of the concentrates. In this process the concentrate mixed with coal is placed upon a Newnam-hearth and air is blown through nozzles into the heated mix. AS a result metalllic lead and a relatively great amount of so-called .'Grey Slag" with a lead content of 25 to 35 pct are formed. The slag is sintered to eliminate sulfur and, after addition of the requisite fluxes, treatt:d in a blast furnace. Owing to the poor recovery of lead from the hearths and to the unavoidable heavy hand-work plus the risk of poisoning this process is utilized in very few 112ad smelters today. Since in mxny countries of the world coke is expensive and difficult to obtain, it appeared feasible to use the principle of the roast-reaction by modern sintering and melting methods with recovery of the lead in electric, or oil, gas, or coal-fired furnaces. Two processes are utilized on an industrial scale: A) Lead smelting in the electric furnace of the Bolidens Gruv A/B in Sweden, as described by S. J. Walldcn, N. E. Lindvall, K.G. Gorling, and S. Lundquist. B) The self-fluxing lead smelting of Lurgi Gesell-schaft fiir Chemie und Huttenwesen m.b. H., Frankfurt a M, Germany, which is described in this paper. In the Boliden process referred to above the sinter mix is pelletized by enveloping return fines with layers of flue dust, limestone powder, and dried galena concentrate. The roasting and agglomeration are carried out on a down-draught machine, and a slight excess of sulfur is left in the sinter product. During the smelting in the electric furnance the roast-reactions occur and a slag poor in lead and a sulfur bearing lead are formed. This latter is subsequently oxidized in a converter to obtain lead bullion and dross. The Lurgi-process achieves the maximum possible extent of the roasting reaction on the sintering machine. PRODUCTS made from the ores of the sillimanite group, and synthetic substitutes for them, have unique properties, and service tests prove that they are playing, and will continue to play, a major part in improvements in metallurgical processes. Also, they are examples of how comparatively useless, rare, or "museum" minerals have been made available in commercial quantities. Until research developed uses for them, the minerals had been observed only in small, scattered masses, or crystals. Improvements in ceramic processes and compositions have come about very gradually. In the last 10 or 15 years, several outstanding developments have been made. Of greatest interest to the mining and metallurgical engineers are those affecting the composition, necessitating the mining of new minerals, and improvements in ceramic products used in metallurgical processes.

I DESIRE to make it perfectly clear at the outset that I fully realize the hazardous nature of any attempt to estimate the quantity of iron-ore or any other mineral in the ground. I should not have had the temerity to venture upon an inventory of the iron-ore supplies of the United States except for the requirements of the Conservation Commission. During the preparation of this inventory I have been impressed by the wide diversity in estimates of those best qualified to. hold an opinion, and I am therefore prepared in advance for criticism of my figures. Inasmuch as this report was prepared in large part for unprofessional readers, I considered it necessary to classify and describe the commercial iron-ores in a somewhat elementary manner, in order to explain the reasons for the large element of uncertainty in the estimates. I have therefore given a chemical and a geological classification of iron-ores, which place the commercial deposits in six classes: (1) magmatic segregations in basic igneous rocks; (2) contact-deposits formed in connection with igneous intrusions; (3) concentration-deposits; (4) replacement-deposits; (5) bedded-deposits, and (6) gossan-deposits. The iron-ores are further distinguished under two classes available and not available. This classification is in large measure arbitrary, and it, is evident that it will vary front time to time. In the available class are placed those ores which can be worked at a profit under conditions essentially as they exist at present. Since it depends wholly on the question of costs, the various factors which affect cost will determine the classification of any particular deposit. WITH the development of adequate sampling and analysis techniques, much information has been obtained concerning the behavior of hydrogen in the steel bath during the course of steelmak-ing operations. From studies of this type it has become clear that the slag has an important role to play in determining the hydrogen content found in commercial products. A knowledge of the behavior of hydrogen in slags is necessary to round out our knowledge of hydrogen in steelmaking practice; with this information we are better able to assess practical methods of control. In this paper a method developed for analyzing slags for hydrogen content, studies of the solubility of hydrogen in synthetic slags, and studies of the variation of hydrogen content in slag and steel in industrial heats will be described. Previous Work—While very little has been done in the past to determine the hydrogen content of metallurgical slags, measurements have been made on such slag-like materials as geologic magmas and glasses. Goranson as made extensive studies of the solubility of water in natural and synthetic granites. Many workers have investigated the solubility of gases in synthetic and commercial glasses, but the recent work of Russell" is the most extensive. Russell found that the solubility of water in glass was proportional to the square root of the water vapor pressure in water vapor-oxygen mixtures. It was found that the solubility could either increase or decrease with temperature depending on the glass composition. Wentrup, Fucke, and Rief,' and Piper, Hagedorn, and Backes' have extracted hydrogen by holding a slag at 1300" and 800°C respectively in vacuum. Wentrup et al. reported hydrogen and water vapor as evolved together while Piper et al. passed the evolved gases from the hot extraction treatment over hot ferromanganese to reduce the evolved water vapor to hydrogen and, therefore, reported the analyses in terms of total dissolved hydrogen. Yavoiskii has reported hydrogen and nitrogen analyses on steelmaking slags. Dobrokhotov, Povol-skii, and Khan have studied the hydrogen content of basic open hearth steel under slags of varying viscosity. These authors reported that the hydrogen content of the steel bath increased as the fluidity of the slag was increased by the addition of bauxite. They recommended that a viscous slag be used and the steel tapped without deoxidation in the furnace to ensure a low final hydrogen content. Analysis of Slags for Hydrogen Development of Apparatus—The vacuum fusion analysis equipment described by Shields, Chipman, and Grant" was modified for the analysis of slags." This method depends upon the reduction of water in the slag to hydrogen, which is readily determined by the method used for hydrogen in steel. Preliminary experiments were made with a eu-tectic ferrosilicon melt as the reducing agent. Other experiments included the use of graphite and molybdenum crucibles. The ferrosilicon alloy bath was found to produce a thick coating on the furnace tube which could adsorb hydrogen. Graphite produced CO by the reduction of FeO, MnO, and SiO2 in such quantities that analysis for hydrogen was virtually impossible. Molybdenum, while giving a low blank value, could reduce the slag sufficiently to produce a volatile oxide which again was found to adsorb hydrogen. The arrangement finally adopted is shown in Fig. 1. The molybdenum sheet served as the induction-heated susceptor, and was separated from the escaping gases by alumina guide tubes. An outer jacket of alumina protected the quartz furnace tube, and alumina and quartz stools completed the assembly. The falling sample is shown wrapped in aluminum foil, 0.002 in. thickness, which acted as the reducing agent' This foil was careful'~ washed in acetone and an d and then dried in hot air before wrapping the weighed slag sample for charging into the apparatus. Investigation of the hydrogen content of the aluminum foil itself showed that a small quantity of hydrogen was released in vacuum, but had no relation to the weight of the aluminum charged. WHEN mixed with common cast steel in quantities ranging from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. and properly treated, manganese increases the ductility of the metal and adds greatly to its toughness and resistance to abrasive action, which properties comprise the distinctive characteristics that make manganese steel so valuable for many purposes at the present time. Manganese steel has been manufactured for about 26 years. .It was first made in a small way in England and subsequently produced in the United States in 1892. At present the manganese-steel foundries of this country have an annual capacity of about 60,000 tons and most of the growth has occurred within the past 10 years. In the early days of the industry it was impracticable to make manganese castings weighing over a few thousand pounds, but at present crusher heads, rolling-mill pinions, and similar castings weighing up to 30,000 lb. each are produced, and it does not appear that the limit of weight has been reached by a considerable margin. Manganese steel is similar in analysis to ordinary first-class converter metal except that it is high in carbon and contains from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. of manganese. From one standpoint manganese steel is similar to malleable iron in that the casting as it comes out of the sand is hard and brittle and must be made ductile by a heat-treating process. The heat treatment is an essential part of the process of making manganese-steel castings and must be properly carried out to secure satisfactory results. The necessity for heat treatment limits the thickness of sections which may be made of manganese steel. Originally the annealing depth was comparatively small, but researches carried on during the past few years have resulted in an increase in the thickness of section up to 5 ½ in., which it is possible to treat successfully. Large castings are cored out to a minimum thickness of 5 ½ in., thus not only eliminating some of the internal stresses which are invariably set up in a very thick casting, but also reducing the weight and inertia of the piece, an

The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February." -Mark Twain Although the preceding chapters describe the type of preliminary evaluation frequently performed in the mining industry, it has been assumed that input data are known with certainty-clearly an enormous simplification. In reality, estimates of ore grade, mining cost, metal price, etc., are subject to varying degrees of uncertainty due to the inability to predict the future with much precision. Management would probably not, for example, be equally attracted to two projects each offering a 20% DCFROI-one for a new gold venture in Nevada and the other for an undersea manganese nodule operation in the Pacific. The high risk with the latter investment tells the obvious; there is more to investment decision-making than a deterministic analysis using "best estimates" of input parameters. The science of decision theory normally distinguishes between decisions under uncertainty, where probabilities of various outcomes are unknown; and decisions under risk, where such probabilities can be estimated. The first case is rarely en- countered in practical capital investment analysis in mining, so the remainder of this chapter focuses on that class of problems where rational probability distributions for the future states of input variables can be estimated. RISK IN MINING Risk in the context of this chapter is the unforeseen deviation of individual cash flows from expected values for a capital project. The Anaconda company has never indulged in any employee activities at Butte which might be termed paternalistic, but it has exerted a vast amount of effort in care of its employees during working hours. The reason for this policy is not lack of interest or that the company does not feel the effect of employees' activities while they are "off the job"; it is that the company and the city of Butte have grown up together and each has been adequate in its own sphere, the company in providing employment at the highest possible wage and the city in providing housing, sanitation, commercial services, medical services, schools, churches, amusements and entertainments. The one exception to this independence between the company and the community is the Butte Water Co., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mention of this relationship is made here because the water supply of such a city as Butte is one of the principal factors in determining the health of the people. Very early in the development of the Anaconda company an adequate and dependable water supply for the operations became necessary, therefore the company took over this important community function. So well has this activity worked out that during the whole period of time covered, in which the company has expanded to become practically the sole mine operator and the community has grown from a small mining camp to the status of a modern city, there has been no shortage of water or any outbreak of water-borne, epidemic disease. Conditions Leading to Organized Safety Effort A brief sketch of conditions in Butte prior to 1912 is necessary to an understanding of the reasons for placing accident prevention on an organized basis. As early as the year 1884 there were a large number of small independent mining operations depending principally upon the production of silver, although even then copper was becoming prominent in the value of total production for the district. The Butte camp was then just emerging from the log cabin stage to that of a modern city.

IN the past, steam engines were used in practically all cases for driving the machinery, in and about an anthracite breaker, and hence little or no accurate data were available as to the power requirements for starting and operating the individual machines, which make up the complete equipment. It was impossible to segregate the power necessary to drive each individual machine, first, because the equipment was driven in groups, and second, because it was impracticable to obtain graphic, integrated, or instantaneous records of the horsepower used. As a result of these conditions, it was found, when individual electric motors were applied to the various machines, that more accurate and complete data were needed in order to provide motors of the proper power and design for the particular services to be rendered. In order to obtain the desired information, the writers made and collected a number of tests, from time to time, on the individual motor drives in- electrically operated breakers, and as these tests have been of great value, it occurred to them that a paper giving the results might be of service to other engineers interested in similar installations. Table I shows the .results of these tests. All the motors tested were of the three-phase, 60-cycle, 440-volt, induction, squirrel-cage type, except a few, which, on account of size and starting conditions, were of the wound-rotor type. The instruments used in making these tests were: An integrating watt-hour meter, a graphic ammeter, and a graphic voltmeter. These instruments were connected in each motor circuit, and a record of a day's run of 9 hours was obtained from each machine. From these tests, the running light load, the average all-clay load, and the instantaneous peak readings in amperes, volts, and kilowatt input, were obtained. By means of the characteristic curves obtained from these motors at the factory, the power factor, the efficiency, and the horsepower output were calculated for each particular test. Starting tests were made by the brake-arm method, in which the torque in pounds was measured directly on a spring balance.

The sum of $250 was appropriated as a guarantee fund to establish a Library Research Bureau in co-operation with the other Founder Societies. The sum of $50 was appropriated to the Puget Sound Section. The sum of $250 was appropriated to the San Francisco Section. The sum of $125 was appropriated to the St. Louis Section. The matter of memorializing the New York State Constitutional Convention was referred to the New York Section of the Institute with authority to act as a Section only. Upon recommendation of the Committee on Membership, 50 Mem¬bers, 1 Associate, and 6 Junior Members were elected.

Most of the data on equilibrium constant and the deoxidations potentialities of those elements, considered to be stronger deoxidizers for steel than is silicon, have been calculated from thermodynamic data. The reason for this is, primarily, the obvious difficulty of obtaining direct experimental evidence of equivalent accuracy. This is an excellent use of the principles of thermodynamics and has given valuable data not otherwise available. Such results, of course, can be no more accurate than the physical constants used in the calculations, and one can never be sure that the basic data are either complete or accurate. In fact, as in the case with silicon,1 there are not only discrepancies among the calculated theoretical values of the equilibrium constant for deoxidation of steel but also between the theoretical and experimental values. It is highly desirable, therefore, to obtain experimental values for checks on calculated results whenever possible. If they disagree, both cannot be right, but if there is good agreement, their value is enhanced. The present work was done in an effort to obtain experimental evidence in regard to some of the common alloying additions but more particularly the so-called "strong" deoxidizers for steel. The method used was to determine the minimum concentration of the deoxidizer that would effect a certain definite degree of deoxidation in steel. The criterion of deoxidation was the change from the large globular Type I sulphide to the eutectic Type II as described by Sims and Dahle.2 This change is sharp and definite, and inasmuch as it can be produced with equal facility by aluminum, zirconium, and titanium, it is considered a manifestation of a certain degree of deoxidation and not an alloying effect. Ostensibly such a procedure could give only a comparison of deoxidizing powers and no absolute values. Nevertheless, repeated observations have shown that, when increasing increments of aluminum are added to a steel, the residual aluminum content begins to increase simultaneously with the appearance of Type II inclusions. Thus it seems warranted to postulate that the Type II inclusions appear coincident with the virtual elimination of FeO as an active constituent of the steel. Experimental Procedure The data obtained were primarily from the microexamination of polished and unetched specimens and from chemical analysis. Experimental heats weighing 200 to 250 lb were made in a basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace. The base composition was nominally that of a medium-carbon casting steel to which the appropriate additions were made. Specimens were poured into sand-cast ingots 3 in. in diam as shown in Fig 1. Sand-cast ingots were used to prevent chilling and to allow sufficient time in freezing for normal inclusions to form of a size large enough to be studied readily. In the first few heats, the tapered wall ingot was used, but in the majority, the extra large riser was used to prevent piping in heavily deoxidized steels. Specimens for microexamination were taken from the location shown in Fig 1, and drillings for chemical analysis were taken from a similar location. The procedure was to melt the base composition and deoxidize with the usual manganese and silicon additions and then to pour an ingot. The furnace was then tilted back, and the first increment of strong deoxidizer or special alloy was added and allowed to disseminate through the melt, with enough power on to hold the temperature constant, for 45 sec. Then a second ingot was poured. After this, another increment was added, and after the same holding time another ingot was poured. In this way from 9 to 12 ingots were poured from each heat, each successive ingot having progressively larger total additions of alloy. Eighteen heats were made altogether, and the range of alloys used and additions made are outlined in Table 1. The three principal types of sulphide inclusions found are illustrated in Fig 2. The globular Type I sulphides are characteristic of silicon-killed steels, the eutectic Type II are characteristic of steels deoxidized with a small amount of aluminum, while the larger, angular Type III are usually found in steels with a residual aluminum content above about 0.02 pct. In all specimens studied, the transition from Type I to II either did not occur at all or was very abrupt and clear cut. There never was any doubt as to just which increment produced the change, although the individual additions were small, in the order of 0.01 pct. The change from Type II to Type III was considerably less sharp, and, in some cases, both types were found together. Inasmuch as the formation of Type III sulphides is apparently not a deoxidation phenomenon, they will not be discussed here.

Results are presented of a detailed study on the combined influences of ingot dendrite am spacing and thermomechanical treatments on the structure and solution kinetics of high --purity cast and worked 7075 alloy. Solution kinetics were found to depend sensitively on ingot dendrite am spacing and on details of therrnomechanical processing, including amount of reduction and extent of&apos; solution treatment before reduction. An approximate analysis is given for rate of solution of nonequilibrium second phase in the cast and worked structres; results of the analysis are compared with experiment. MICROSEGREGATION in high strength aluminum alloys manifests itself as "coring" (composition differences within the primary aluminum-rich phase), and as interdendritic second phase. The mechanism of formation of the microsegregation is understood, and approximate prediction of the amount of second phase is possible for simple binary systems.1,2 When alloy elements or impurities are present in amounts less than their solid solubility at solution temperature, any phases forming from these elements are termed "nonequilibrium" and can be dissolved by appropriate solution treatment. The rate at which the nonequilibrium phases are removed depends sensitively on their spacing (dendrite arm spacing in the cast material, or band spacing in wrought material). When alloy elements or impurities are present in amounts in excess of their solubility at the solution temperature, second phase particles form an "equilibrium" second phase that does not dissolve in heat treatment and may, in fact, coarsen in such treatment. Usual commercial, high strength, wrought aluminum alloys contain nonequilibrium second phases that were not fully dissolved during ingot processing. They also contain equilibrium second phases resulting from impurities present in amounts greater than their solubility. As has been shown by Antes, Lipson, and Rosenthal,3 and will be demonstrated further in a subsequent paper by the authors,4 significant improvements in mechanical properties of high strength alloys can be achieved by reduction or elimination of these second phases. Methods of elimination are 1) to employ high purity materials to minimize amounts of equilibrium second phase, and 2) to employ suitable thermomechanical processing techniques to fully eliminate nonequilibrium second phases. Work reported herein comprises a study of selected thermomechani- cal processing treatments, and of their influence on solution kinetics of wrought high purity 7075 alloy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Melting and Casting. The bulk of the work reported was performed on a single ingot of high purity 7075 alloy. The ingot was 4 in. by 4 in. by 8 in. high, uni-directionally solidified following a procedure previously described.5 The mold was heated to 1350°F before pouring the melt. The bottom chill was carbon coated stainless steel. Water was circulated through the chill after the melt was poured. The 7075 alloy was prepared from high purity virgin material (aluminum, zinc, magnesium) and from master alloys (Al-50 pct Cu, A1-15 pct Cr, A1-5 pct Ti). Final measured melt composition (wt pct) was: Zn Mg Cu Cr Ti Fe Si Al 5.70 2.28 1.35 0.18 0.15 <0.002 <0.012 bal Melting was done in a silicon carbide crucible; all tools were coated with zircon wash to minimize iron contamination; degassing was by bubbling chlorine through the melt. che-rmomechanical Treatments. Detailed studies were made on material taken from a location approximately 13 in. from the chill and 51/2 in. from the chill (i.e., from 1 in. thick slices taken between 1 and 2 in. from the chill and between 5 and 6 in. from the chill). Solution treatment was done at 860°F in an air-circulating furnace with a "bottom drop" arrangement to achieve minimum delay time between solution treatment and quench. Samples solution treated in this way were 2 in. by 2 in. by 1 in. Temperature of the quench water was approximately 10°C. Mechanical reduction was by cold rolling. Samples 11/2 and 51/2 in. from the chill were treated for 12 and 24 hr, respectively, before cold rolling. Reduction by cold rolling was then 4/1, 16/1, and 35/1. In each case, several intermediate anneals (1/2 hr at 860°F) were used to permit reaching the final thickness without cracking; two such anneals were used for the 4/1 reduction, five for 16/1, and six for 35/1. After working, materials were again solution treated for various lengths of time from 0 to 48 hr and quenched in water. Structural Measurements. Secondary dendrite arm spacings were measured using procedures previously described.&apos; For each measurement reported, five photomicrographs were first made at X75. Measurements were made of dendrite arm spacings in at least 20 different grains (grain structure was equiaxed). Grain size measurements were made by running a number of random traverses across photomicrographs of the samples and obtaining the mean lineal intercept. Measurement of the volume percent of second phase and porosity was done by quantitative metallography. A two-dimensional systematic point count was used

Today, however, an inspection trip to the crest of almost any open pit on the ranges will re- veal great progress underground mining and the transportation of underground ore have also developed rapidly and if and when underground mining of iron ore again becomes generally economically feasible; these mining methods will probably witness a transformation equal to that which has taken place in the open pits.

THIS paper reports the results of viscosity measurements on cadmium and indium undertaken as part of a continuing program of liquid metals research at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. For several years this work has continued with support from the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. In the literature, existing viscosity data for cadmium are conflicting and for indium are scarce. To achieve reliable viscosity values, further work was deemed desirable. Viscosities were measured using an absolute technique applied to an oscillating closed right cylinder of liquid metal. The apparatus, constructed in this laboratory, and the techniques involved in its use have been described in an earlier paper.&apos; In calculating viscosity coefficients from the experimental data. Roscoe&apos;s2 mathematical analysis was used. Because accurate viscosity determinations are dependent on accurate density data, and since the available data in the literature are conflicting, the densities of liquid cadmium and indium were also determined in this laboratory by a pycnometric technique. This increased the control exercised over all the variables contributing to the accuracy of viscosity measurements. For both density and viscosity determinations, cadmium and indium of 99.999 pct purity were used. These materials were obtained from Cominco Ltd. In order to suppress excessive evaporation losses and help prevent oxidation, a technique developed in measuring the viscosity of zinc&apos; was used for cadmium. This involved maintaining an atmosphere of purified hydrogen in the viscosimeter during the rela- tively long periods while the experimental temperature was changed and stabilized between individual determinations of the logarithmic decrement. Then, immediately prior to a decrement measurement. the viscosimeter was rapidly evacuated to a pressure of about 2 X 10-6 torr. On the other hand. with indium. no difficulties arise from vaporization or oxidation. In this case. therefore. the apparatus was held under a constant vacuum of about 2 x 10-6 torr. When all sources of random and systematic error have been evaluated, the technique is considered to yield data accurate within 10.5 pct. The viscosity of cadmium was measured to a maximum temperature of 451.8°C and that of indium to 346.5°C. These temperatures are. respectively. 130° and 190°C above the melting points. Two separate runs were made on indium. The results are given in Table I and, when plotted. yield the smooth curves evident in Figs. 1 and 2. Values of A and C to fit the well-known Andrade1 equation were determined by a regression analysis. The equation is: where n = coefficient of viscosity. i = specific volume. T = temperature in °K Despite its empirical nature. Andrade&apos;s equation has been shown by many workers to describe accurately the temperature dependence of viscosity. During the current research program, this equation has been found to fit the data precisely for all the metals and alloys that have been studied.5,6 The A and C&apos; values for cadmium and indium are given in Table 11. Comparing the magnitude of the present data with those of previous workers,7-10 as has been done in Fig. 1, it is evident that the results of Fisher and Phillips10 deviate markedly from the rest. With the exception of one point from Gering and Sauerwald,7 all other data agree within ±2.5 pct. However, the agreement between the present results and the work of Menz and sauerwald9 is especially good over the entire experimental temperature range. By determining the (220) pole figure for OFHC copper rolled to 96 pct R. .A., the occurrence of four texture components of the type (135) [211] was confirmed. It was found that the total volume fraction of material close to the four symmetrical orientations of this type is larger than the volume fraction of the other components put together. THE rolling texture of copper was described by early investigators1&apos;" as a mixture of components of the (110)[l12] and (112) [11l] types. Other studies, still using the qualitative photographic method of texture determination arrived, instead, at orientations of the type (135) [533] or (135) [211] for copper3&apos;4 and at the closely related "Z-texture" for a fee nickel-iron alloy.5 The prevalence of this type of orientation, near (123) [412], in the rolling texture of aluminum and of copper was later confirmed by means of quantitative diffractometer methods.&apos; However, in a recent paper7 Jones and Fell stated that the (110) [112] and (112) [111] double texture was in better agreement with the measurements of Young&apos;s modulus for cold-rolled copper.&apos; These authors also expressed their belief that the "roll texture" can be determined by means of two photographic quasi-fiber texture patterns taken with sheet specimens rotated around the rolling direction and the transverse direction, respectively. Jones and Fell found7 that the results obtained from such patterns for cold-rolled nickel did not agree with any of the orientations mentioned above, but they suggested that the observed diffraction spots may have been brought about by the overlapping of reflections due to the (110) [112] and (112) [11l] double texture components. Jones and Fell concluded that the (123) 14121 type orientation is inconsistent with their patterns. They also stated, without offering any supporting evidence, that this orientation is inconsistent with the (220) pole figure. "Ideal orientations" are often used for a very rough description of the principal orientations encountered in a texture, It is, however, well to remember the fact that, no matter how "accurate", these ideal orientations are only schematic representatives of a continuous distribution9, which often (as in the case of rolled copper) includes extensive orientation spreads. The attempt by Jones and Fell7 to use elastic modulus data in deciding between various ideal orientations in the rolling texture of copper neglects this fact. The inadequacy of two-dimensional "axis density figures" in describing orientation distributions in sheet textures was previously discussed.9 It was also pointed out9 that there is no reliable evidence to prove that orientation distributions derived by the "quasi-fiber method" from rotated sheet specimens are fully equivalent to the corresponding information obtainable from quantitative pole figures. The view that a sheet texture could be adequately determined by means of two photographic quasi-fiber texture patterns is obviously erroneous9. The question as to the consistency with the (220) pole figure of ideal orientations derived from the (111) and (200) pole figures is, on the other hand, certainly very relevant. Since no quantitative (220) pole figure for cold-rolled copper appears to be available in the literature, the following work was undertaken.
