THE Lehigh Navigation Coal Company Inc. operates steep-pitch, relatively deep mines in the Panther Creek Valley, at the eastern end of the southern anthracite coal field. Commercially minable coal beds are the Mammoth,† Primrose, Orchard, and Buck Mountain,‡ their respective thicknesses average 50, 15, 1o and 12 ft. Sand slates immediately overlie and underlie these beds, though in some locations sandstone or conglomerate beds occur. Underground operations extend to a depth of 1200 ft. below the surface, and comprise a bulk of virgin work on the lower levels, and a small amount of remining on the upper levels. With increase in depth, ventilation has become a more important factor. DEVELOPMENT In early days slopes or drifts were driven in the outcropping coal on the hillsides. Subsequent development was by water-level tunnels, with portals above high water in Panther Creek. These tunnels have been maintained because they intercept and drain much water that enters the mined-out portion of the bed and otherwise would follow down to the deep workings. Below these tunnels, the coal was customarily developed by slopes. Muleways, which are zigzag chutes easy to travel, were also driven to connect lower openings with the water levels. When it became necessary to go still deeper, the slopes were abandoned, and vertical multicompartment shafts were sunk from the surface. Levels have been at vertical intervals of from 195 to 250 ft. Recent practice has been toward the latter spacing; splitting the total lift, however, by starting to mine from chutes extending halfway up to the level above. Chutes customarily are spaced at 50, 60 or 70-ft. centers along the gangways. At some mines, additional shafts have been sunk from the surface to the level containing the main pumping station, and these carry the discharge lines from the pumps. As the mines are ventilated by the exhausting system, both the hoisting and so-called water shafts serve as intakes. The main fan is always on the surface, and is connected with the return airways from the various levels by an air hole or a vertical shaft. For economy, when the present deepest levels were developed, main return-air shafts or air holes were not extended to the new level, but connections were made from the new level to that above by two or more holes. It is doubtful that this method will be continued, as complications in the system, increased resistance to flow, and other difficulties undoubtedly will counterbalance any economies this provision may afford.

The Mather Mine property is composed of a 5.2 sq km (2 sq mile) area within the Cities of Ishpeming and Negaunee which are located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Production in this mine started in 1943; it ran continuously until its closing in 1979, having produced slightly over 55 million tons of iron ore. This mine was a joint venture between several steel companies and The Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company (CCI), with CCI being the fee holder and operator. For the first 17 years of operation, the ore was shipped in its natural state directly from the mine to the steel mill. By 1960, iron ore pellets were on the market and they proved so superior to the natural soft Mather ore that the latter became difficult to sell except for the coarser portions. It was decided to develop a pelletizing process for the Mather ore, and this was accomplished by 1965 when the first Mather pellets were produced. From this date, all but the coarse fraction of the Mather ore was shipped as pellets. The geological setting is that of a large east-west trending synclinorium which plunges to the west. The lowest member of this trough-like structure is, for the most part, a quartzite-like graywacke, the upper 20 m of which grades into a softer, fine grained slate. Lying conformably on this graywacke footwall member is an iron- formation member which is over 1,300 m in thickness. This iron-formation is cow posed of thin alternate bands of iron oxides and chert and is intruded by a number of diorite sills - some up to 122 rn (400 ft) in thickness. The north limb of this synclinorium dips at approximately 45' and bottoms out at about 1,000 m from surface in the central part of the mine. There are two sets of faults, many of which are intruded by diorite dikes, which trend east-west and southeast-northwest. Displacements are varied, reaching a maximum displacement of 243 m (800 ft). The ore is found lying directly on the slatey footwall and its position is largely controlled by the faults and dikes, with the bulk of the ore being on the upper side of these structures. The ore is composed of soft earthy hematite and martite with vertical thicknesses up to 122 m (400 ft) although the average thickness would be closer to 46 m (150 ft). The ore averaged 60% iron and 7% silica on a dried analysis. The Mather Mine is located on the north limb of the syncline and was worked from two shafts, the deepest of which. was 1,09 7 m. These two shafts are about 2 km apart and serviced a total of 8 working levels between them during the life of the mine. The level spacing was about 61 m (200 ft). The main haulageways were driven parallel to the ore/footwall contact in the hard cow petent graywacke wherever possible. On the lower levels, deeper into the footwall, naked development was common. This material graded into roof bolting ground towards the upper stratigraphic portion. As drifting progressed further into the upper stratigraphic portion of the footwall, progressively stronger steel sets had to be used. From the main haulageway, cross-cuts were turned into the orebody on 61 m (200 ft) centers and extended as far as needed to recover the ore available to that particular cross-cut. The main haulageways and cross-cuts were driven 3 m (10 ft) high, 3 m (10 ft) wide at the top and 4.6 m (15 ft) wide at the bottom. This configuration would accomodate a set composed of a 2.7 m (9 ft) cap on top of two 2.7 m (9 ft) legs angled out at 18'. A sill plate was used under each leg to prevent its sinking into the ore below. The type of steel used was dependent on the expected weight to be experienced. Sets were placed on 1.63 m (5 ft 4 in.) centers; however, in extremely heavy areas, it was sometimes necessary to install sets on 0.8 m (2 ft 8 in.) centers. On the top two levels (5th and 6th), the ore was considerably hard-er and was mined by sub-level stoping and long hole drilling. Very light steel sets were used in the main haulageways and cross-cuts and timber was used in the production drifts. Some con- crete production drifts were installed on 6th level, but proved to be uneconomical. However, as mining reached greater depths, the ore became softer and more massive, reaching its maximum vertical heights on 11th and 12th levels. The transformation which steel undergoes in slow cooling, from the condition of austenite whelk above the transformation rage into that of pearlite plus either ferrite or cementite below that range, is subject to great lag. This transformation is essentially the pearlitizing of the austenite. Indeed the hardenillg of steel is due to this lag, which is made so great by extremely rapid cooling that a very large part of the transformation itself is restrained, so that the rapid cooling catches the metal in an only partly transformed state, that of martensite, and under favorable contditions even in an almost wholly untransformed state, as in the cases of Maurer's austenitic manganese steel. Hadfield's austemtic. manganese steel, 25 per cent. nickel steel, and other anstenitic alloy steels, arc austenitic even after slow cooling. It has long been known that this lag increases (1) with the rapidity of cooling, (2) with the presence of certain retarding elements, notably manganese and nickel, and (3) with the temperature from which cooling starts. The present inquiry touches the last of these influences, but incidentally it throws light on the first also. This influence of higher heating ill increasing lag manifests itself in different ways which, though they may at first seem unrelated, are in fact hut different aspects of one and the same thing. The partial isothermal section of the Ti-Cu-Zr system at 750°C has been studied. The crystal structure of Ti2Cu has been detevnlined as tetragonal and when expressed as face-centered tetragonal, a = 4.164, c = 3.611 A, and c/a = 0.867. TITANIUM systems in which ß-titanium decomposes eutectoidally into a and a compound rather readily are known as active eutectoid systems. Recently in active eutectoid alloys based on the Ti-Cu system, and containing additionally A1 and Zr, it has been found that zirconium may produce both moderate weakening and marked strengthening at elevated temperatures.' In order to obtain some insight into the behavior of zirconium, an attempt was made to determine whether compounds of the type Tix Zr and TixZryCu exist. Only results of the Ti-Zr-Cu studies are reported here since data on Ti-Zr alloys will be presented in a separate publication. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were nonconsumably arc melted in argon atmosphere as 15-g buttons, prepared from materials of the following purities: Bureau of Mines electrolytic Ti — Bhn 63 OFHC copper Reactor Grade Zirconium Bhn .C 150 Prior to alloy preparation the electrolytic titanium was premelted to avoid excessive spattering of the charges during melting. The weight losses during melting did not exceed 1 pct of the total weight of the charge. The alloys prepared are listed in Table I together with analyzed compositions. in cases where they were determined. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet, annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules, and quenched by breaking the capsules under iced brine. About 1 to 2 sec are required to remove the capsule from the furnace, drop it into the iced brine and break it. Because of the insulation effect of the quartz, this delay in quenching should not produce a large drop in temperature. In many instances, no difference or little difference has been detected between the same specimen quartz capsule quenched or directly quenched in vacuum by an impinging stream of water.' Ti-Cu-Zr alloys were homogenized for 48 hr at 825°C prior to annealing at 750°C. Annealing for 5 days at 750°C produced the same results as 11 days at temperature and it was therefore assumed that 5 days was sufficient to establish equilibrium. Titanium-copper alloys were homogenized for 40 hr at 900°C prior to heat treatment for 6 days at 750°C. As the work carried on by this Company, of which the writer has been in charge for the past two years, is somewhat unique, the following account of it may be of interest, and, on that account, is offered to the Institute without any attempt to claim this practice as the best. Mines. The mines supplying ore to the Company arc situated in three groups: the Guanaco field,.about 80 miles N.E. of the port of Taltal (lat. 25" S., long. 70" 30' W. of Greenwich); the Sierra Overa, about 63 miles S.W. of Taltal; and Paranao, about 42 miles due N. of Taltal (12 miles N. of the small town of Paposo, once famous for its copper-output). Guanaco. This field lies in the center of an absolutely waterless mountainous desert, where not a sign of vegetation can be found for miles. The dryness is such that ivory and horn crack and open, while raw-hide must be used in place of leather, which -would become worthless in a very short time. Water is brought about 21 miles by piping from the Cordillera, but only in small quantities, and costs in the Guanaco $7 (= $1.78 gold) per cubic meter. On April 17, the John Fritz Medal, the award of which the presiding officer, Col. John J. Carty, characterized as "the highest honor which can be conferred on an engineer in America," was presented to. J. Waldo Smith "for his most distinguished services in civil engineering, and particularly in connection with the work on the great aqueduct, which has just been completed." Col. Carty spoke very briefly of the origin of the Medal and the method of awarding it, mentioning the names of the twelve men to whom it has been awarded in former years, and then introduced Mr. Nelson P. Lewis, Vice-president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and for many years Chief Engineer of the Board of Estimate of the City of New York, who is an old colleague and fellow-engineer of Mr. Smith. Mr. Lewis said, in part: Mr. Smith is so well known that an extended review of his professional activities will be unnecessary, but a brief outline of the development of a conspicuously successful hydraulic engineer may not be out of place. It would be difficult to find a better instance of the success which is quite sure to result from persistent devotion to all phases of a particular line of engineering work. It began in his boyhood, when, as a lad of 15, he eagerly availed himself of such opportunities as were afforded to help in the construction of a waterworks system for his home town in New England. MORENCI ores contain as an average about 0.015 pct molybdenite, MoS2. Incidental to the concentrating operations applied for the recovery of copper minerals, approximately two-thirds of the molybdenite is floated and appears in the final copper concentrate. The economic importance of molybdenum and the success achieved in its recovery in milling operations elsewhere encouraged research directed toward its recovery in marketable form. Several procedures are utilized to effect separation of molybdenite from copper and iron sulphides, but only two have wide application. In the better known of these two methods the molybdenite in the copper concentrate is depressed in a flotation operation using soluble starch as the depressant. The tailing from this treatment thus becomes a low-grade molybdenite concentrate which after thickening, filtering, and low temperature roasting is repulped with water and subjected to additional flotation steps for recovery of the molybdenite. A thio-phos-phate collecting agent is employed in flotation of the copper minerals. Presumably the stability and lasting effects of that collector type necessitated the practice of depressing molybdenite followed by subsequent roasting to insure elimination of copper and iron sulphides from final molybdenite concentrate. The second important method of recovery is applied at various southwestern plants. In those plants xanthates are in use as copper collecting agents. It has been found that xanthates are relatively unstable and their collecting power for sulphides is destroyed by very simple procedures. The method generally applied is to subject the xanthate-acti-vated concentrate, in the form of a pulp, to prolonged heating using steam as the heating medium. A concentrate thus treated may then be subjected to a flotation operation for recovery of the molybdenite, using mineral oil collecting agents, and the copper and iron sulphides will be depressed. Neither of the above processes was applicable to Morenci concentrates. Morenci uses a thio-phos-phate collecting agent in its flotation operation. However, it was established that soluble starch was not a depressant for Morenci molybdenite; therefore the first step in that process was not applicable. AS would be expected the copper and iron sulphides in Morenci concentrates could not be depressed by the heating methods used on xanthate activated concentrates. Low-temperature roasting did eliminate the effects of the thio-phosphate but had to be rejected as uneconomic in as much as the tonnage of concentrates involved was too great. Preliminary research having established the above facts, it became obvious that new methods would have to be developed for the recovery of molybdenite from Morenci concentrates. A broad laboratory investigation was initiated along two general lines, both directed toward depression of copper and iron sulphides. One approach was through the use of water-soluble oxidizing agents with the objective of destroying the thio-phosphate in the concentrate and thus eliminating its collector effect. The other approach involved the use of soluble sulphides, which have long been recognized as sulphide depressants. These efforts resulted in laboratory processes which showed promise. Research was then extended to a pilot plant having a daily capacity of several tons of concentrate. This operation soon demonstrated that soluble sulphide—basically sodium polysulphide—when applied to a pulp made slightly acid with sulphuric acid, proved to be the most effective sulphide depressant. The rate of concentrate treatment in this plant and the low molybdenite content of the concentrate prevented carrying the process to a conclusion, namely, production of molybdenite concentrate of marketable grade. Laboratory treatment of pilot plant concentrate indicated that a marketable product could be made from it, given a tonnage suited to available cleaner flotation machine capacity. Accordingly, the molybdenite plant was enlarged to permit treatment of the total copper concentrate from the extension plant, maximum of approximately 800 tons per day. In the enlarged plant a major difficulty was encountered. No criteria could be established as a basis for control of the process. Laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite is reported. Numerous tests were run on sylvite ore sized in the ranges of 4x20 mesh, 10x65 mesh, 8x100 mesh, -8 mesh and -10 mesh with heavy liquids in the range of 2.05 to 2.15 sp gr. From the test results, it was concluded that, with the type of ore under study and a size in the range of -8 mesh, a recovery as high as 90% could be achieved with a product grade of 70% KCl. However, a final product at an acceptable recovery cannot be made with one pass, and the float must either be further processed with heavy liquids or dried and sent to a conventional froth flotation circuit. Potash ores occurring in this country consist essentially of sylvite and halite plus minor amounts of magnesium sulfate salts and montmoril-lonite-type clays. Recovery of potash minerals from evaporite ores in the North American potash fields is accomplished almost exclusively by use of amine flotation. European practice involves froth flotation as well as solution-crystallization processes. Laboratory and pilot plant test work has been reported in Europe and the U. S. on the application of heavy media separation to potash ore beneficiation. Work was probably discontinued because of lack of ore with the required very coarse liberation characteristics (1/8 to 1/2 in. liberation size). Sylvite, with a gravity of 1.99, and halite, with a gravity of 2.17, appear to be ideal for separation by heavy liquids, which are now available in gravities from 1.59 to 2.95. This paper reviews preliminary results obtained from laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite. TEST WORK The heavy liquids used in the tests under discussion were chlorobromethane, with a specific gravity of 1.923, and dibromethane, with a gravity of 2.490. These liquids, completely miscible, were combined in the proportions needed to give a mixture having the desired specific gravity. Feed for the laboratory tests was mine-run ore screened to the desired mesh sizes. In conducting the tests, the sample was fed at a constant rate into a stream of heavy liquid and the mixture directed into a small separatory vessel. The float overflowed into a collecting pan while the sink collected in the bottom of the separatory vessel and was removed at the end of the test. Approximately 500 g of feed constituted a charge. Pulp density of the feed was kept low to prevent particle to particle interference in separation. With feed in the range of 8x100 mesh, a pulp density of under 10% solids by weight was found advisable. With coarser feed the pulp density could be carried as high as 15% solids. Time of separation was very rapid. In the case of 4x20-mesh material, separation was effected in 15 to 30 sec; with -10-mesh feed, separation required about 1 to 2 min. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT Since heavy liquids are toxic to varying degrees, all separatory work was carried out in a standard laboratory fume hood. It was noted that complete removal of fumes was not being effected; therefore the hood construction was modified, resulting in a completely satisfactory arrangement for heavy liquid test work. In the interest of safety, details of this fume hood are reported here. Unlike most fumes, heavy liquid fumes tend to settle and flow like water, rather than to rise like a gas. Working on this assumption, a standard water drain was installed in the hood. Across the front of the hood a 1-in. barrier was constructed. In the rear of the hood a false back was installed, with an adjustable sliding door on both the bottom and top of this panel. As shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust fan pulled a vacuum behind the barrier, sucking the heavy fumes from the bottom of the hood. Another addition was the drying box, shown to the right of the hood. This is simply a box covered on top with hardware cloth and connected by a 6-in. inlet to the hood. Sample trays made of fine mesh wire filter screens were found ideal for drying samples. Nickel and carbon form a metastable nickel-nickel carbide eutectic system which was ohsen)able by freezing latent-heat arvests at pressures 210 khars. The eutectic freezing temperature Is pressure had a slope of -0.9°Cper kbar. At 50 khars, the nickel-nickel carbide eutectic was at 1297° * 5°C and 0.34 mole fraction Ni3C. The composition of the eutectic increased at an initial rate of 0.004 mol fraction per kbar. The carbon content of the a phase also increased with pressure. Seveval illustrations of nickel carbide microstruc-tures are given and data on the lattice expansion of nickel in terms of carbon content are included. IRON, cobalt, and nickel form a variety of carbides with compositions varying between MeC and MC. Of the three, the carbides of iron are most easily recovered. The nickel carbides are so unstable at temperatures above 900°C that their occurrence in Ni-C alloys is unusual. Under sufficient pressure, however, the temperature range for the stability of the ferrous metal carbides is likely to be increased, or their decomposition suppressed (e.g., see Hilliard' on FesC), providing an opportunity to study the unstable carbides more closely. This was found to be true for nickel carbide which, under pressure, formed a eutectic with nickel. This paper describes the conditions of formation of nickel-nickel carbide eutectic compositions and their subsequent recovery. Despite the comparative instability of the nickel carbides, something is already known about them through various chemical reactions at temperatures not exceeding a few hundred degrees, and from their recovery by the very rapid quenching of molten Ni-C alloys from temperatures of about 1450°C or above. At least four carbides of nickel have been reported: A discussion of the state of knowledge about Ni3C is given by ansen.' The studies of Morrogh and williams7 who obtained Widmanstatten nickel carbide structures and of sidorenko8 who first obtained nickel carbide eutectic structures are also of interest. Sidorenko used short heating times for molten nickel in a graphite crucible followed by very rapid quenching to obtain the eutectic structures. Long heating times produced only the nickel-graphite eutectic probably due to the presence of graphite crystals in the melt which nucleated graphite crystallization. According to the early work summarized by anssen,' nickel carbide may form at temperatures far above the melting point and may be recovered by very rapid quenching. More recently, Giardini and Tydings, working on diamond synthesis, found evidence for "free nickel carbide'' in high-pressure reactions carried to temperatures far in excess of the limit for diamond growth, followed by rapid thermal quench. They stated that nickel carbide was not found in association with diamond growth. In the present work, observations were made on the melting and solidification temperatures of Ni-C alloys as a function of composition, temperature, and pressure. The nickel-nickel carbide eutectic was found at pressures above 10 kbar and its variation with pressure followed up to 60 kbar. Nickel-nickel carbide microstructures were recovered by quenching under pressure from temperatures of about 1400°C and higher. The formation of nickel carbide structures under ordinary diamond-growing conditions was usually observed but the role of carbide formation as an intermediate step in diamond growth needs more study. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The melting and solidification temperatures of various nickel-graphite compositions were observed by latent-heat arrests in the sample holder illustrated in Fig. 1. ENGINEERS have long pondered the answer to the question of "How am I doing?" and in large measure the answer from the economics angle is provided by the 1946 survey of the engineering profession now being published by the Engineers Joint Council as an eighty-page bulletin entitled "The Engineering Profession in Transition." The survey, based upon a completely precoded mail questionnaire, aimed at three major objectives: (1) to determine the general impact of World War II upon the profession in the period 1939 through 1946; (2) to obtain re- R liable data from which valid findings could be derived to predict how active the profession would be after 1946; and (3) to determine if the war's upheaval had changed materially the pattern of professional activities, education, background, and earnings from those which existed prior to 1939. The work herein reported shows that galena in certain organic solutions of fatty acids becomes coated with lead soaps, and that this coating is not only highly water-repellent but is also repellent to certain organic liquids, particularly those of high surface tension; i.e., nitrobenzene, diphenylmethane. Wetting Properties of Galena in Nonaqueous Fatty Acid Solutions When a "captive bubble"I is withdrawn from a polished, plane galena surface under a nitrobenzene solution of stearic acid, the air bubble shows a decided tendency to "cling" to the mineral surface. The contact angle, therefore, was greater than zero, although it was not large enough to be measured quantitatively by the captive-bubble method." When pure nitrobenzene was substituted for the nitrobenzene-stearic acid solution, no clinging of the bubble was observed; viz., contact angle = zero. Although the contact angle developed in air-galena-nitrobenzene-fatty acid solution was small, the organic solvent repellency of the galena surface was great enough to enable good recovery in a laboratory flotation cell2 In Table I are given the results of flotation experiments using several different fatty acids dissolved in nitrobenzene.

Until recently, the only commercial method of producing magnesium has been fused salt electrolysis, despite a considerable amount of experimental work on the direct reduction of magnesium oxide. In this early work, a number of investigators demonstrated that magnesium oxide would react with any one of several reducing agents to produce magnesium vapor, but that the mixture of magnesium oxide and reducing agent must be heated to a high temperature even in a vacuum. In particular, it was demonstrated that silicon and aluminum are effective reducing agents and that when either of these is used the magnesium vapor can be condensed to massive metal. In spite of this knowledge, no successful commercial reduction process was developed, at least in this country, because of the operational difficulties imposed by the requirement of high temperature and vacuum and because of the high cost of the reducing agent. The outstanding experimental work done by Pidgeon, who carefully reviewed all of the known methods of making magnesium and then selected ferrosilicon reduction, overcame some of the operational difficulties. The process developed by Pidgeon comprises briquetting a mixture of calcined dolomite and reducing agent, preheating the briquets to about 600°C. in an externally heated alloy retort, reducing the MgO with silicon in an evacuated horizontal alloy retort heated externally to about II50 C., and condensing the magnesium vapor to a solid in a cold extension of the retort projecting beyond the front of the furnace. A major advantage of Pidgeon's process is that the retort is not cooled down between charges. Earlier investigators had used apparatus that necessitated cooling and reheating of the retort between charges. Early in January 1942, when the War Production Board was considering the Pidgeon process for quickly increasing the production of magnesium, The New Jersey Zinc Co. offered to have a research investigation of the process carried on, with the hope of assisting in its further development. This offer was accepted, and a two-retort pilot plant was built at Palmerton and put in operation on Jan. 29,1942. An intensive investigation of certain phases of the process was carried out in the ensuing four months. This investigation was completed in the last part of May 1942) and the pilot plant was then shut down. Subsequently, The New Jersey Zinc Co. was requested to have further development work done on the process, and a more extensive investigation was undertaken in August 1942 under contract with the War Production Board and under the supervision of the War Metallurgy Committee. This paper describes the ,phases of the investigation that are thought to be of sufficient general interest to merit publication.

A technique for determining recrystallization times as short as 0.10 sec was developed utilizing the "Gleeble", a commercially available testing system designed for the study of short-time, high-temperaLure themal and mechanical processes. The procedure consisted of heating a small tensile specimen to a given temperature of hot deformation, loading to a given reduction in area, unloading, delaying various intervals at temperature, and then reloading- to failure. The magnitude of the ultimate load obtained upon reloading decreased with delay lime as recrys-lallization proceeded. The technique was applied to austenite recrystallization in AISI 1010 and AISI 1010 uith 0.02 pct Cb steels. For each steel the reduction in area given the specimen on the first pull was mainlairred at 30 ± 5 pct and recrystallization times deterntined at various temperatures. The results indicaled a significantly slower rate of recrystallization for the columbium-modified composition, suggested the presence of- a recovery stage in the softening process , and indicated a greatly increased softening rate at a temperatuve where significant allotropic transformation to a partially ferritic Structure could occur. In recent years increasing attention has been paid to the fact that the process of recrystallization of austenite deformed at elevated temperatures is far from instantaneous at many practical hot-working temperatures.1-3 This realization has given rise to such terms as hot cold-working1 or warm-working,2 These terms generally describe processes where the recrystallization rate at the temperature of deformation is slow enough to have an appreciable effect on mechanical properties despite a relatively high deformation ternperature. The mechanical properties of interest can be either the properties at the deformation temperature as in hot-workability studies4 or the room-temperature properties after cooling as in the many recent studies of various thermomechanical processes172 where heat treatment and deformation are intentionally combined to give a unique set of room-temperature properties. Because of this interest in processes where the austenite recrystallization kinetics can be an important variable, the development of quantitative methods of following the course of short-time, high-temperature recrystallization has received increasing attention.l,3,5 The experimental methods to date have, in general, relied upon rapidly deforming the austenite, holding at temperature for various brief intervals, quenching as G.A.WILBER and W. IMD. rapidly as possible, and then using room-temperature measurements to follow the recrystallization process. Although such methods can be successfully applied to certain alloy steels, the existence of the allotropic transformation during cooling of plain-carbon or low-alloy steels tends to obscure the results. Thus, such room-temperature measurements as hardness and X-ray line widths do not correlate well with the extent of austenite recrystallization before quenching,5 and results based on room-temperature microstruc-tural observations are dependent upon the success in correlating the observed structure with the prior aus-tenitic grain structure.1,3,5 The purpose of the present work was to develop a quantitative method for the determination of short-time, high-temperature recrystallization rates, based on measurements made at the temperature of deformation. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The basic technique consisted of heating a small tensile specimen to a given temperature of hot deformation, loading to a given reduction in area, unloading, delaying various intervals at temperature, and then reloading to failure. The data were obtained in the form of traces of load and elongation as a function of time. Due to the high deformation temperature, the strain hardening introduced during initial loading was progressively annealed out with holding time after unloading and the loads obtained upon reloading decreased as this softening proceeded. Although the value of the second load at any Consistent point On the load-elongation curve could have been used as a measure of the degree of softening, the most convenient to use was the ultimate load. The softening indicated by the decrease in the second ultimate load with time is essentially a process of annealing of cold-worked material at a high deformation temperature. Although some recovery grain growth may contribute to such a softening process, it is generally considered that the major softening which must take place to achieve complete removal of substantial Strain hardening will occur by the formation of new, stress-free grains. As the results of this work indicate that essentially complete removal of strain hardening did in fact occur. the primary softening process will be attributed to recrystallization, and specific reference made where it appears that other mechanisms may be contributing to the total observed softening. It would, of course, be of interest to attempt to correlate the results of this work with the actual austenite fraction recrystallized as determined by other techniques. This was not attempted in the present work because it would have required running a large number of additional specimens and, as discussed previously, there is limited assurance that the results would accurately reflect the prior austenite fraction recrys-

September 20, 1917. As this meeting terminates the year's agreement under which the Engineering Foundation has appropriated its income to the National Research Council, a brief summary of what has been accomplished seems called for. The Research Council was organized Sept. 19, 1916. The Executive Committee was appointed at that meeting; since that date two other meetings of the Council have been held, one in Boston, on Nov. 13 and 14, the other in Washington on April 19. During the intervals between the meetings of the Research Council, the Executive Committee has conducted all of the business of the Council. There have been 29 meetings of the Executive Committee, 13 in New York up to the first of May, 15 in Washington subsequently, and one in Boston. The meetings in New York were devoted to the organization of the Research Council and especially to appointment of committees. At the outset, the Council had no very clear idea of the way in which it was to organize; there were several other groups of scientific men at work, among them, the Research Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Engineering Committee of the Advisory Commission to the Council of National Defense. Time was spent in straightening out these two principal complications, both of which were satisfactorily adjusted. The upshot of these negotiations is to leave the Research Council as the only representative, national body of research men, assisting the Government. During the period up to May, the Executive Committee in New York selected carefully the personnel of some 25 principal committees, and of a large number of sub-committees; so carefully were these chosen that of the entire number, several hundred, there have been only one or two declinations. Some of the important steps in the development of the Research Council are the establishment of the Military Section, composed. of the members of the Council connected with the Government and resident in Washington. This Section put the Research Council into close contact with the most important officials of the Army and Navy. From it has grown the Washington office of the Council, and the recognition of the Research Council as the "Department of Science and Research of the Council of National Defense; " and the establishment of the Washington office after the Council of National Defense had officially recognized the Research Council. About this time Dr. Hale, Chairman of the Council, appointed Dr. Millikan to be Vice-Chairman to represent the Council in Washington, and Dr. Millikan has since then been in charge of the work of the Council. At the request of the Secretary, Dr. Millikan has prepared a brief report of some of the work of the Research Council during its first year, which is appended to this report. It shows that the Research Council has been active in much of the important work. under way in our preparations for war, and that it has rendered effective services to the Government.

The arrangement and general dimensions of the reverberatory furnaces and waste-heat boilers for the Nos. 2 and 3 smelting units at the McGill plant of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Corporation are shown in Fig. 1. Each of the two reverberatory furnaces has its own set of waste-heat boilers, and before February, 1932, each furnace, when it was in operation, delivered waste-heat gases to its own boilers only. In January, 1933, the idea was suggested of using some of the waste-heat boilers as economizers to operate in conjunction with the waste-heat boilers that were generating steam. The execution of this idea gave rise to the gas-flow scheme depicted in Fig. 1, the advantages of which were obvious, particularly so in view of the fact that for some months prior to the adoption of this scheme the smelting had been confined to No. 2 furnace, with No. 3 furnace and its boilers idle. The waste-heat gases from No. 2 furnace pass through the boilers serving this furnace as steam-generating units, thence through the original exit duct to a point where a bulkhead diverts the gases in a reverse direction through two of the boilers of No. 3 furnace. After the gases have traversed these two boilers, another bulkhead placed in the duct between No. 3 furnace and its boilers causes them to traverse still one more boiler, from which the gas path leads to the stack. In this scheme the last three boilers traversed by the gases, i.e., the boilers behind No. 3 furnace, function as economizers and preheat the feed water for the two steam-generating units directly serving No. 2 furnace. This discussion will give consideration to the results obtained in waste-heat recovery by the scheme shown in Fig. 1, and, further, will compare these results with those obtained before the boilers of No. 3 furnace were set up to act as economizers, but before going into the detail of heat generation, distribution and recovery, will present some additional details of the equipment. All boilers in this waste-heat plant are of the Stirling type. The two behind No. 2 furnace, acting as steam-generating units, of class 13, are 40 tubes wide and rated at 1112 boiler hp., while the three boilers behind No. 3 furnace, acting as economizers, are also of class 13, but 28 tubes

This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. Results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates are discussed. CRUSHED stone classified as limestone comprises about 70 pct of the crushed concrete aggregate and roadstone produced in this country, and the product has amounted in the recent past to about 97 million tons per year, valued at more than $123,-000,000.' Therefore an evaluation of the properties of rocks classified in these statistics as limestones and an ability to predict their behavior as aggregate in portland cement concrete are matters of considerable economic consequence to producers and consumers of aggregate. This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. It also points out certain results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates. The problems encountered in efforts to explain the behavior of limestones, dolomites, and related rocks as concrete aggregate lie on the frontiers between the ignorance of the geologists and the ignorance of the engineers. The mineral composition and textures of the rocks have not been adequately explored and described, and the effects of mineral composition and texture on the performance of aggregates have been worked out in only a few cases. There are instances of unsatisfactory performance and some generalizations of those experiences. There are many more examples of satisfactory performance than of unsatisfactory, but there is practically no published information as to why a particular aggregate was satisfactory in a specific use. There are all too few investigations of undeteriorated concrete; more is known about the pathology of concrete than about its normal structure and aspect. As part of the investigation of aggregates, the classification of rocks is not an end in itself, but is a step toward recognition of properties expected to influence the behavior of aggregates in their intended use. Rock of any type may perform well or poorly as concrete aggregate, depending on the physical condition of the rock, its physical and chemical properties as compared to those of the matrix in which it is placed, and the circumstances under which the concrete is exposed. Some classification and descrip- tion of the limestones is necessary to distinguish subgroups whose members will probably behave in similar ways and to evaluate the group as a whole. The group name, limestone, includes and tends to conceal the identity of rocks that have a very great range in chemical and mineralogical composition, structure and texture, conditions of deposition, subsequent history, and suitability for use as concrete aggregate. All the rocks classified as limestones include one or both of the most abundant rock-form-ing carbonate minerals, calcite and dolomite, as major constituents. Carbonate rocks is a more descriptive and more accurate group name than limestone, which has generally been used to include dol-omitic or magnesian limestones and dolomites as well as calcitic limestones. Classification and Description of the Carbonate Rocks The question of names to be applied to the carbonate rocks may appear academic, but it is of practical importance as long as there are specifications for aggregate that result in acceptance or rejection of rocks by name and as long as failure to make distinctions among the carbonate rocks leads to misunderstandings of their properties and of what may be expected of them in performance. Materials included in production statistics as limestone and tested for concrete aggregate as limestone range in fact from calcareous shale and calcareous or dolomitic sandstone and argillaceous limestone and dolomite to calcitic limestone and pure dolomite and to rocks close to calcitic and dolomitic marble. To take a simple example: consider two manufactured coarse aggregates, both dense and unweathered, one composed principally of crystalline calcite and the other of crystalline dolomite, but both known as limestone. If each is used as coarse aggregate in a standardized concrete mixture with the same fine aggregate used in both cases, made into concrete specimens, and tested in accelerated freezing-and-thaw-ing, the test results will probably be quite different, because of the differences in internal bond and thermal properties between the two aggregates. As long as both aggregates are called limestone, the test results cannot be explained, or used except in a very limited way; if the aggregates are distinguished as limestone and dolomite and the consequent differences in texture and thermal properties are recognized, the results are reasonable. (communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must be secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

Ventilation within a coal mine is essential to the welfare of those employed therein, from the standpoint of health, safety, and efficiency. While the saving of life and the preserving of health are the chief reasons for ventilation, efficiency and production are increased. In spite of the fact that we speak of air as having a certain composition, the proportions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide are not fixed, but vary between small limits. The different elements are not chemically united, they are merely mixed and each is free and can be separated with little energy. For this reason air in the mine workings is seldom found in a pure state. Factors that necessitate ventilation in coal mines are those that change the composition of pure air. Contamination of mine air results from the burning of oil-fed flames, the use of explosives, the oxidation of coal, and the liberation of gases by the coal. The extent to which these factors exist governs the size and general plan of the ventilating applianccs required. An efficient ventilating system is one that will furnish air at the working faces in sufficient volume to dilute and render harmless noxious gases and at the same time maintain an oxygen content closely approaching that of pure air. In a well-ventilated mine, the oxygen seldom falls more than 0.5 per cent. below normal. The carbon-dioxide content of the air in the average coal mine will vary from 0.1 to about 0.8 per cent., which amounts are not harmful. Three per cent. of carbon dioxide in air doubles the frequency and the depth of breathing; it is plainly noticeable and if breathed continuously for several hours its effect would probably be harmful. Slight reductions in the oxygen content of the air, such as occur in well-ventilated mines, have no debilitating effect on the worker. A person not exerting himself would fail to observe any unusual physical effect in an atmosphere: containing 17 per cent. of oxygen. This condition, however, or even a condition showing an oxygen content below 20 per cent., would indicate poor ventilation and that the elements which tend to reduce the efficiency of the worker are present, namely water vapor and a high wet-bulb temperature.
