INTRODUCTION Rocky Mountain Energy is the mining subsidiary of the Union Pacific Corporation, and has been active m uranium exploration since 1966. Since 1970, RME's uranium activities have been funded 50% by Mono Power, the fuels supply division of Southern California Edision. RME and Mono recognized the need for development of new methods for recovering low grade uranium deposits, and contacted Halliburton Services in regard to in situ leaching, because of Halliburton oil industry experience. As a result, a joint venture between the three parties was formed in 1974. BEAR CREEK The first ISL test was at the Bear Creek deposit in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming, about 60 miles north of Douglas. The mineralized sand is the tertiary Wasatch formation, which is an arkosic sandstone. The sand typically contains about 10% clay. The predominant clay being montmorillonite with some kaolin and illite. The roll front type trends occur along the flanks of old stream channels. This deposit was being considered for exploitation as an open pit mine. Routine amenability testing indicated it was quite amenable to a conventional acid leach, consuming about 50 lbs. of sulfuric acid per ton of ore in an agitation leach, while recovering more than 95% of the uranium. Hydrology testing indicated a permeability of about 1 darcy. The groundwater has a pH of about 8. 0 and TDS of about 1200. Test Facility The Bear Creek test was a summer-only operation, with no effort towards weather-proofing. Uranium was removed from the recovered leach solution by fixed bed ion-exchange columns. Loaded resin was eluted with strong sulfuric acid. The recovery plant was designed for simplicity of operation, with little concern for the grade or form of the yellowcake product. The plant was constructed of PVC piping and valves, fiberglass reinforced tanks, and stainless steel pumps. All waste streams were directed toward a lined evaporation pond. Wellfield The test pattern was a 30 foot radius 5 spot, with wells fully penetrating the 30 foot ore sand to a total depth of about 165 feet. The injection wells were three-inch PVC with slotted casing, while the producer was eight-inch I. D. , with a stainless steel screen. The eight-inch well was necessary in order to accommodate a six-inch stainless steel pump. Wells were cemented using cement baskets, at the top of the sand, to contain a latex acid resistant cement. Leach Conditions The lixiviant generally contained from five to seven gpl sulfuric acid, and about 0. 5 gpl hydrogen peroxide. The pH was generally 1.4 and EMF was usually -550 millivolts. Injection rates were rather variable from well to well, with a total injection rate between 12 and 25 GPM. Production rate was set at 25 GPM, since the production pump could not be throttled more than that. Approximately two pore volumes of solution were injected during the three-month test. Leach Results Injectivity was quite variable, but was generally rather poor, because of poor completion techniques. The problem stemmed from injecting before the injection wells had been completely cleaned of drilling mud. Pregnant solutions averaged about 50 ppm U308, with groundwater dilution varying from 10 to 50%, depending on the injection rate. Injectivity did decline with time, probably as a result of contamination of the well faces. A total of 1000 lbs U308 had been recovered when the test was shut down. This probably represented about 10% of the mineral under leach.

Plant nutrients are obtained by plants from both the air and the soil. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Plants are capable of absorbing carbon dioxide directly from the air. Most of this nutrient comes from the air, although some carbon dioxide is absorbed by soil water and taken into the plant as liquid. Growing plants use more water than any other substance. Plant nutrients in the soil dissolve in soil water; soil water entering the plant carries nutrients into the plant structure. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. Inorganic or mineral nutrients essential to plants are supplied through the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants usually is less than 5% of their weight. In most crop-growing areas, much of this nutrition is inadequately supplied from the soil and must be provided by fertilizers. Proper fertilization of a soil to improve its mineral level and productivity is the role of the fertilizer industry. The 13 essential plant nutrients which often must be added to soils or plants and are generally considered fertilizer minerals are categorized as primary minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium); secondary minerals (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur); and micronutrients, or trace minerals (boron, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, molybdenum, and chlorine). These classifications are based on quantity of nutrients utilized by plants and have no implication as to function or degree of necessity. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all nutrient carriers supply that nutrient in a chemical form which will be available to the plant. Thus, a product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient carrier. Fertilizer Industry Scope Until about 1900 demands for higher crop yields were met simply by bringing new agricultural lands into cultivation. Since that time great progress has been made in increasing yields through fertilization and improved varieties and cultural practices. The importance of the fertilizer industry to the economy and welfare of the US is widely recognized. Fig. 1 illustrates the relationship of lime and fertilizers to crop yields. In terms of tons of fertilizer products, the growth of the industry has been phenomenal, particularly between 1950 and 1980. Table 1 shows the increase in fertilizer usage. INTRODUCTION Rock mechanics theory needs to be applied to solve ground control problems, but in the final analysis the mining method and equipment which is used will be those which solve problems in a practical manner. Equipment and its inherent productivity and safety as supplied as "off the shelf" items by manufacturers often dictate the size of mine openings. Operators may tolerate falls of ground and associated hazards if productivity and safety problems are not too severe. In this whole process the costs of mining finally dictates just what system will be employed and what equipment will be used. True solutions to ground control problems sometimes require that the mine operator step back and totally rethink his problems. The true cost of accidents are often missed and hidden in overhead costs. Losses in production and accompanying profit are not fully considered, false economics, such as using inappropriate roof support devices, are undertaken at times when using the most expensive devices to totally eliminate accidents may be the best overall solution. Automation to remove the worker from the hazard area is often over- looked as the initial capitol expense to apply it may be high. Cooperation between mine engineers, mine operators, safety personnel, equipment suppliers, and government inspectors, both state and federal, is required to reach workable solutions that best meet the goals of all parties.

THE downward trend of metal prices seems to act something like a reagent that precipitates selfishness in most business men's hearts; in the same way the upward trend precipitates altruism. Operators do not say: "I continue working my mine without curtailment because I can afford the present prices while my neighbor cannot and thus will give me way." They say: "I continue working my mine because 1 consider it a service for consumers. They will get better prices on a free market. Any curtail¬ment would be an attempt to raise prices artificially, that is to say, bad economics." Copper producers have learned how fallacious is such an opinion. It perhaps was not fallacious in olden times when all mines were worked on a small scale even if operating on a big deposit. At that time the supply and demand law played fair. When prices were too low and profits were vanishing for many mines, they would. shut at once, then little by little the metal scarcity would induce prices to climb up again; finally these prices would reach the point when it became profitable to again work the closed mines. Re-opening and shutting down mines was then a normal custom. Workers and operators weakly deplored this unstability, but there was nothing effective they could, do about it.

George Ellery Hale, Director of the Mount Wilson Observatory and Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences, who has been for the last ten years a Correspondent of the Academie des Sciences, Institut de France, has received the unusual honor of election as Associe Etranger, taking the place of Adolph von Baeyer, declared vacant by the Academy. The Foreign Associates are limited to twelve, and the high distinction has been held by only two Americans-Simon Newcomb and Alexander Agassiz. The National Research Council upon the presentation and acceptance of. Dr. Hale's resignation as its Chairman and the election of James R. Angell as his successor, created and bestowed in perpetuity upon Dr. Hale the title of Honorary Chairman in recognition of his services to the National Research Council and to Science and Research by indefatigable efforts that have contributed so largely to the organization of science for the assistance of the Government during the war, and the augmentation of the resources of the United States through the newly intensive cultivation of research in the reconstruction and peace periods that follow.

IT is evident from Professor Louis' remarks that he holds a different opinion on certain phenomena connected with a specific type of surface subsidence from mining than is held by many engineers in the United States. The question which appears to be at issue is whether or not the line or plane of "draw" produced in ground movement resulting from extraction of pillars may, under certain conditions, be vertical or even inclined toward the workings rather than inclined for- ward over the unworked mineral, as it is universally agreed occurs in mining by the longwall advancing method. In discussing this case it is well to take the simplest condition, such as specified by Professor Louis, of a flat bed, whether it be coal, iron or other mineral, where the overburden is stratified rock and where there is no overlying quicksand. Professor Louis says in effect that his experience is that the ultimate angle of draw is always positive and inclined 5" to 15" from the perpendicular over the unwrought mineral. My experience under Illinois coal-mining conditions is that .'where longwall advancing is used the draw is always positive as Professor Louis describes it, but that in extracting of panels by withdrawal of pillars, the ground movement is manifested, after the first roof' beam break, by the forming of an unstable dome over the goave. Then subsequently, by the falling of individual slabs from the under side, the dome gets larger and higher until it breaks through to the surface of the rock., Up to this time, arch stresses buttress the rocks above the solid coal or mineral. When, however, after. the dome breaks through and the central hole - #enlarges so the arch is no longer sufficiently supported -the stratified rocks cantilever out .from over the solid unworked mineral and tend to break off in masses triangular in vertical cross-section, until the broken loose material, sliding down against the solid rock, .has such a thrust that it balances the tendency ,for the solid stratified rock to break away and slide toward the excavation.

As the specific gravity of low-carbon steel seems to be attracting considerable attention as a means of détermining the quality and value of the metal, I give here a few of the results of a long series of experiments recently made by me. The object of the experiments not requiring more than approximate correctness in the third place of decimals, the extreme precautions to obtain accuracy which are sometimes used in determining specific gravity were not observed. But each piece of metal was carefully cleaned to remove scale, rust, dirt, etc., thoroughly dried, and then weighed in air, all weighings being carefully repeated. The balance used was one of Troemner's finest, and sensitive to one-tenth of a milligram. Before weighing in distilled water, care was taken to remove, as far as possible, the air enclosed in the pores of the metal. The pieces of metal were suspended by means of fine silk thread, a correction of course being made for the weight of the silk. Care was taken that the water in which they were weighed should he always at the same level, and, as far as possible, at the same temperature.

The unit agreement for the Wertz Dome field, Wyoming, was approved by the Acting Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior on November 4, 1937, effective on December 1, 1937. The stated objectives of the agreement are to conserve and put to beneficial use all oil and gas produced; to make possible a uniform withdrawal of oil and gas in order to maintain equalized reservoir pressures; to provide for an orderly determination of the structural features of the productive horizons; and to permit the injection of gas for pressure maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to show by a discussion of the problems involved and the engineering practices employed by the unit operator, how well the objectives of the unit agreement have been accomplished in the development and production of oil and gas from the field. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT The Wertz Dome oil and gas field is located 88 miles southwest of Casper and 38 miles north and westerly from Rawlins, Wyoming. It is served by a state secondary oiled road connecting with U. S. Highway No. 220 at Lamont, a distance of 3 miles from the field. It has been a producing field for 27 years, first as an important producer of gas and more recently of oil. The Producers and Refiners Corp. completed Well No. 1, NE1/4SW1/4 sec. 7, T. 26 N., R. 89 W., the first productive well in the field, in September. 1921, in the Muddy sandstone of Upper Cretaceous age, at a depth of 3435 feet for an initial production of 42,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day. In 1922 pipe lines were laid to Casper, Wyoming, for supplying fuel to the Standard of Indiana refinery, 'the adjoining town of Mills. and the Producers and Refiners Corp. pump station No. 6 in Mills; and to Parco (now Sinclair), Wyoming, for supplying that refinery with fuel. The gasoline content of the gas was extracted in an absorption plant located near the town of Mills. No compressors were used as the line pressure was sufficiently high to flow the gas through the absorbers. As high as 30,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day were treated in the plant extracting 6000 gallons of gasoline. In September 1937, the pipe line was discontinued and the plant was dismantled at which time 61,000,000,000 cu. ft. of gas had been produced from the seven Muddy, Cloverly, and Sundance gas wells drilled in the field. Of this volume of gas 800,000,000 cu. ft. were produced from the Frontier formation, 34,200,000,000 cu. ft. from the Muddy sandstone, 24,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Cloverly, locally called Dakota, and 2,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Sundance formation. The pipe line was discontinued because of the near depletion of the gas reserves in Wertz and nearby fields, and hecause of the local field requirements demanding the retention of the remaining gas reserves. In December 1936, the Sinclair Wyoming Oil Co. completed Well No. 10, SE1/4NW1/4 sec. 7. T. 26 N., R. 89 W., at a depth of 5886 feet. as the first Tensleep sand producer with an intial of 1700 barrels of oil per day. The well was originally drilled only 14 feet into the sand and in August 1939 was deepened to a depth of 6161 feet, 289 feet in the sand, and the daily produe tion increased to 8350 barrels of oil. In February 1948 Well No. 22, SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 1. T. 26 N., R. 90 W., was deepened from the Tensleep to the Basal Amsden sand and completed at a depth of 6635 feet for an intial of 600 barrels of oil per day in the Basal Amsden. In April 1948, Well No. 2. SW1/4 NE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N., R. 90 W.. was deepened from the Tensleep to the Madison limestone and was completed at a depth of 7193 feet for an intial of 1145 barrels of oil per day in the Madison. Well No. 26, SE1/4SE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N.. R. 90 W., was deepened from the Ten-sleep to the Cambrian and in October 1948 it was completed in the Cambrian for an intial of 277 barrels of oil per day. GEOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVE ACREAGE The surface is Steele shale of Upper Cretaceous age, covered in part by gravel beds. The topography of the field is that of a rolling hill with a steep draw or gulch along the northern edge of the field. The Steele shale lies conformably on the lower formations as

SINCE the r ? a transformation rates of many carbon-free ferrous alloys and low-carbon alloy steels are relatively fast, conventional equipment is not suitable for the dilatometric determination of continuous cooling transformation diagrams. On the other hand, a method based on metallographic analysis of quenched specimens would not be practicable because the various products of shear-dominated transformation are essentially indistinguishable in low-carbon iron-base alloys. Both problems may be avoided by a thermal analysis method employing gas quenching of small specimens austenitized in vacuo. The laboratory equipment employed in the present study consisted of a Tektronix Type 564 Storage Screen Oscilloscope and a Kinney high-vacuum evaporator, modified as shown in Fig. 1, to permit heating a small specimen and cooling it slowly by programmed cooling or rapidly (up to about 8000°F per sec) by a controlled quench with helium gas. The oscilloscope records the electromotive force of a 40-gage (0.003-in.-diam) Chromel-Alumel thermocouple in the specimen during cooling. The temperature at which the cooling curve begins to show the influence of the heat produced by the phase change in the specimen was arbitrarily taken as the transformation-start temperature.*

In the crucible-method of assaying ores for silver a certain amount of litharge is essential to supply sufficient lead to collect the precious metals. The object of this paper is to point out that the use of a large excess of' litharge in the assay of some ores will give results for silver that are uneven as well as low. So far as I know, however, an excess of litharge does not affect the results obtained in the crucible-assay of ores for gold. The main reasons for using, in the crucible-assay, much more litharge than is required to givc the necessary lead button are: 1, its action as a flux; 2, its action as a desulphur-izer; and 3, its action as an oxidizer, especially on metals like copper and nickel, whereby they are forced into the slag as oxides and thus prevented from passing into the lead button. Hence, by the use of much litharge in the crucible-assay more ore call often be taken than in the scorification-process, and a lead button obtained which call possibly be cupelled at once or after a single scorification. The method is specially advantageous with an ore carrying much copper or similar impurity and poor in silver, when the assayer does not wish to resort to a wet-analysis for the determination of the silver. It is well known that some ores give better results when assayed by the scorification-method, while others give better results by the crucible-method. For several years I have noticed that, when much litharge was used with certain sulphide and arsenical ores, the results were considerably lower than when the scarification-method was used. In the flotation area, the trend to larger machines continued. Scientific investigation of the modeling and process control of flotation was apparent, as was the research and development of new flotation reagents.

INTRODUCTION The production of coal is a major part of the mining industry. In recent years the production of clean coal has exceeded 600 million tons per year and is reported to have reached 660 million tons in 1977. Some data on the magnitude and utilization for the year 1975 is given in Table I. In that year 648 million tons of soft coal were produced and of this 267 million tons or 41% approximately was produced by mechanical cleaning. Of the 374 million tons of raw coal sent to the preparation plant, 28.6% or 107 million tons was discarded as refuse. In the same year approximately 6 million tons of anthracite were produced and nearly all of this was cleaned. Table I also gives coal utilization statistics for 1975. Excluding the approximately 20% that goes to the coke ovens or to export, the vast bulk of our production is used for steam power generation and a lesser amount for captive production of industrial power and process steam. While much of the nation's coal (e.g. strip mined western, sub-bituminous coal) may be removed from the ground in relatively pure form by modest selective mining techniques, other coal requires preparation in order to remove ash and sulfur constituents and produce an acceptable steam or coking coal. Preparation is often a valuable adjunct to mining in that rather non-selective, low cost, bulk mining techniques may be used underground while the preparation plant is used to reject refuse at low cost above ground. The principal reason for the use of coal preparation is to convert raw coal into an acceptable commercial product by removing the high ash and high sulfur refuse material.

Beginning with a joint session on engineering research and production engineering, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by E. A. Stephenson and H. C. Fowler, problems of petroleum technology, domestic and foreign production, proved oil re- serves, economics, and stabilization were mooied almost without interruption until nearly everyone was "talked out,' and the meeting was adjourned at the end of the annual Petroleum Division dinner, late Thursday night.

WHILE single crystals of most materials with cph lattice structure show essentially unlimited ductility, polycrystalline specimens of the same materials exhibit the entire range of ductilities. A difference between the ductility of single crystals and polycrystals may be associated with the special stress concentrations to be expected, for example, at the intersections of slip bands or twin lamellae with grain boundaries. Whether such stress concentrations prove catastrophic depends on the cleavage strength of the material, the size of the stress concentrations, and the speed with which they are formed. Thus, the ductility may vary in degree from material to material. Another possible reason for differences in ductility between single crystals and polycrystals is that a sufficient number of independent deformation modes must be available to insure compatibility between the macroscopic strains in neighboring grains.''2 This criterion is often taken to be a necessary condition for any polycrystal ductility whatsoever, not as one that determines different degrees of ductility; thus, a material with an insufficient number of independent deformation modes would have to be brittle as a polycrystal. The "sufficient number" is five if every grain is to accommodate arbitrary shape changes ("von Mises criterion "). We should like to argue that fewer than five independent modes may be sufficient to satisfy compatibility conditions; and that the internal stresses set up when the plastic strains are not compatible reach the theoretical fracture stress only after a significant amount of macroscopic strain has taken place which may vary in magnitude from case to case, allowing an influence on the degree of ductility. The Gaudin-Meloyl equation for the size distribution of fragments resulting from single fracture is where y is the mass fraction of material smaller than size x, and x, and r are parameters to be determined from the experimental data. In physical terms, r is associated with the number of active flaws in a particle of characteristic dimension xo . The special attribute of this equation is its emphasis on the coarse size region of a distribution. There are various procedures2-5 for obtaining the parameters in Eq. 1, but a simple graphical method is awaited. This situation contrasts sharply with that in the cases of the familiar Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and Rosin-Rammler equations.6 The purpose of this note is to present a method based on a procedure7 which has been successful in several other applications.8-13

R. W. Campbell (Jones and Laughlin Steel Carp., Pittsburgh)—As usual John Price has presented an excellent paper. I know of no one who has devoted more time and conscientious thought to this subject than he has, and his efforts have produced scientific data and conclusions of real value. Results of similar studies made by the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. on the blending of Pennsylvania coals may be of interest. During 1935 the late F. W. Wagner and the present writer developed an empirical physical fuel value formula for evaluating the combined physical tests of metallurgical coke, see Table IV. In the development of the formula, the tumbler test, shatter test, screen test, and porosity of coke have been taken into consideration. Each of these tests brings out some physical property not expressed by the others, and in estimation of the importance of these tests as a medium for evaluating coke for the blast furnace, their worth has been graded as follows: It was thought that some additional penalty should be applied to cokes that do not show a uniform screen size, assuming that coke larger than 4 in. was not desirable and that this size was an indication of irregular size. Therefore the screen test factor is further corrected by applying a penalty of 1 pct for each 1 pct material greater than 4-in. size as shown by the screen test. The physical fitness of coke for blast furnace use depends upon four fundamental characteristics: l—gen-era1 strength, as indicated by the shatter test; 2— abradability, or the resistance of cell walls to reduction in size by attrition, as indicated by the tumbler test; 3—porosity; and 4—size and uniformity. Each of these characteristics is not of equal importance, but surely, in an attempt to determine an accurate physical value, the individual value of each should be taken into consideration. The formula is used as a yardstick, so to speak, in determining variations in the normal production of metallurgical coke and in making comparisons between normal coke and experimental blends with other coals. Table IV gives results of coking tests on raw and washed high volatile coals and these same coals with blends of coke breeze, anthracite coal, char and low volatile coals, all from Pennsylvania. The table also gives the source of the coals and coke breeze, as well as their proximate analyses. It will be noted that the washing of the raw high volatile coal increased the physical fuel value from 26.17 to 39.16, showing the effect of removing shale and slate which produces a detrimental fracturing and weakening of the coke. It is a well known fact that many Pennsylvania high volatile coals contain an excess of resinous material or binder which has a tendency to weaken the coke, owing to its high evolution of gases during carbonization. Tests were therefore made with coke breeze, an inert material, in an attempt to alleviate this condition. Blends of washed coal with 5 pct and 7.5 pct coke breeze collected from the coke plant quenching sump (82.9 pct through 1/8-in. screen) resulted in cokes with a physical fuel value of 20.75 and 16.73 respectively, lower than results obtained from 100 pct raw high volatile coal. It will be noted that the percentage of + 4-in. coke increased but that the tumbler test was very low. Undoubtedly better results could have been obtained if the coke breeze could have been crushed extremely fine. During World War II the government asked the coking industry to consider the use of anthracite coal as a substitute for high quality low volatile coal, which was extremely scarce at the time. The next series of tests was made with blends of raw and washed high volatile coals and 5, 10, and 15 pct Pennsylvania No. 5 buckwheat anthracite (100 pct through l/8-in. screen). It was necessary to use some raw high volatile coal in these blends because of insufficient washer capacity at the time. It will be noted that the physical fuel values

The next meeting of the Institute, the 113th meeting, will he held in Arizona in the latter part of September, 1916. All papers to be presented at this meeting must be published in the September Bulletin or previously. Manuscripts must, therefore, be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute not later than July 1. In case manuscripts are given by authors to members of technical committees, or others, they must be in the hands of such persons sufficiently in advance so that they may be actually in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute by the date mentioned. In the past, the Secretary has received urgent requests for special consideration regarding manuscripts that come in after the closing date. In view of the obvious unfairness of this, the Committee on Papers and Publications has instructed the Secretary not to accept for presentation at the Arizona Meeting any papers received later than July 1, 1916.

The regular, bottom-blown Bessemer converter of the present day is a modification of previous forms, and most of the latest proposed modifications of it are merely returns to former types which Ressemer discarded. That he tried almost every conceivable method of blowing iron, with tuyeres at almost every possible position or angle, is well known; and it is to be supposed that he was familiar with the advantages of each type, since he finally settled on that form which has not been improved upon hitherto, for the purposes for which converters will generally be used. Modifications have been tried along two lines: In the arrangement of tuyeres, and in the manner of carrying out the process with tuyeres still blowing vertically upward through the bath. While they have all failed in general competition with the regular modern type of vessel, some of them have found special fields in which they have held their own. The most notable example is in the steel-casting industry, and especially in that part of it concerned with the manufacture of castings which require very hot or very fluid metal, or supply a demand of constantly varying physical or chemical requirements. In this industry the small converters occupy a field between that of the crucible-process and that of the open-hearth process, arid have won a place for themselves in France, England, America, Russia and other countries, which they bid fair to retain until either a new method is discovered of producing cheaply very hot, fluid steel, or the open-hearth process is so improved that very hot steel may be made with it at lower cost of repairs to lining arid roof.
