It has been reported recently1 that the hardenability and toughness of forging steels may be improved appreciably by the use of complex deoxidizers containing titanium, aluminum, and vanadium. In the light of these results, an investigation of similar deoxidizers containing various hardening and grain-refining elements was proposed. These deoxidizers included three manganese-silicon-aluminum-titanium al- loys with and without boron and calcium, three titanium-aluminum ferroalloys with vanadium, molybdenum and zirconium, respectively, an aluminum-zirconium ferroalloy, and plain ferroboron. Their approximate compositions are given in Table I, and the results obtained so far in the investigation of their effects on steel are presented in the later parts of this paper. Method of Using Deoxidizers The deoxidizers listed in Table I were used in three series of 0.40 per cent carbon steels, which were melted in a small basic-lined induction furnace and cast in the form of I7-lb. ingots about 2.75 in. square. The basic charge for each heat was 10 lb. Armco iron and 6 lb. of clean low-carbon sheet-steel scrap. When melted, this charge was deoxidized with 15 grams of ferrosilicon, then about 500 grams of pig iron was added to give the desired carbon content. After the pig iron was dissolved, nickel shot and high-carbon ferrochromium were added if required, and additions of 80 per cent high-carbon ferromanganese and 50 per cent ferrosilicon were made to provide the proper amounts of those elements. Aluminum was added to every heat 2 min. after the silicon, for grain-size control and preliminary deoxidation. One minute later the special deoxidizer was added to the clean bare surface of the molten steel, and 2 min. afterward the steel was poured into the ingot mold, using a hot-top and pipe-preventing compound after pouring to decrease the depth of the shrinkage cavity. The history, geology, ore deposits and current mining operations of the Huitzuco district have been described by C. W. Vaupelll and the current mill operations by David Segura.2 This paper completes the story of Huitzuco with a description of the reduction of the flotation concentrates. The predominant ore mineral in the Huitzuco deposit is livingstonite, a rare, mercury-antimony sulphide (HgS.2Sb2S3). Other associated minerals include cinnabar, stibnite and elemental sulphur. The gangue is largely limestone and gypsum. Former operators mined a selected grade of ore, from which the mercury was recovered by an expensive, inefficient operation. A considerable tonnage of rejects and fills, carrying mercury and antimony, was left in the mine. In order to recover both mercury and antimony from these fills and also from newly developed ore, a combination method has been developed, by means of which the livingstonite is concentrated by flotation and the flotation concentrates subsequently reduced to metallic mercury and antimony. An essential part of the flotation treatment, as developed by Segura, is the use of copper sulphate as an activating agent. A typical analysis of concentrates now being produced at the property is as follows: Hg, 7.73 per cent; Sb, 26.40; Fe, 1.20; S, 29.68; CaO, 11.50; MgO, 7.25; SiOz, 1.63; A1203, 0.65. PRocess foR Treatment op Concentrates In the development of a process for treatment of these concentrates, three different methods were investigated: (1) roasting in a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine with an excess of air; (2) separation of mercury and antimony by distillation in a reducing atmosphere; (3) a third method, which ultimately developed into the present process. The third method involved a slow calcination at a closely regulated temperature with a limited admission of air, which separated the mercury and antimony, the raeroury passing out of the kiln with the furnace gases and the antimony remaining in the calcine or "sinter."

D. C. Ralston—The fact that none of the organizations that have worked on these ammoniacal leaching processes have contributed discussion of Mr. Caron's papers today is a matter of some disappointment. Adaptations, modifications and improvements have been made by several organizations or individuals and to complete the record I want to document a number of them. The Nicaro Nickel Co. operated a Government owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, during the past war. A report on the project was written for Reconstruction Finance Corp. and is in the document file collected by the Office of Technical Services, Commerce Department and filed with the Library of Congress, where it can be consulted or bibliofilm or photostat copies obtained by asking for copies of PB 97271. Nicaro Nickel Co. has obtained a series of U.S. Patents, my list (probably incomplete) of which bears the following numbers: 2,400,098; 2,400,114; 2,400,115; 2,400,461; 2,400,612; 2,458,902 and 2,473,795. International Nickel Co. has also studied the problem and U.S. Patent 2,478,942 shows that some of the complications involving occasional low extractions have been unraveled. Forward, Samis, and Kudryk, of the University of British Columbia, have also published a study of copper-nickel sulphide concentrate.' Others are interested and it is evident that this type of hydrometallurgy is likely to find a happy application in the not-too-far distant future. Caron's two papers practically amount to a summation of his life's work on the important subject of nickeliferous iron ores and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is fortunate to have been chosen the medium of publication. M. Rey—The ammonia leaching process has been the subject of certain studies in New Caledonia, but at the present time, the conditions are not very favorable to its adoption. The process is a combination of a thermal and a hydrometallurgical process. As a result, the first costs and the operative costs are rather high. To counteract this unfavorable situation, it would be necessary to make a very high extraction. But unfortunately, the process is delicate and in spite of all of Caron's valuable work, there are still many unknown factors. It is difficult to obtain regularly a high extraction, exceeding 75 to 80 pct. It would be interesting to have the opinion of Inter-national Nickel on the process and to know what the Dutch are doing in Celebes. M. H. Caron (author's reply)—I am quite familiar with the different types of nickel and cobalt ores as found on New Caledonia, and it may be pointed out that the Celebes ores are quite the same in their properties. Their behavior when treating the ores by the ammonia-leaching process is also alike and in my opinion, there is no reason why a high extraction of the New Caledonian ores could not be obtained if the process is properly applied. For the sake of completeness I may add that one of my patents has not been discussed in the papers. This patent deals particularly with the treatment of serpentine nickel ores. THERE is a large body of evidence'" indicating that solidification during the liquid-solid transition is usually induced by heterogeneities present in the liquid. By dispersing liquid metals into small droplets, the impurities responsible for catalyzing solidification are isolated within a small number of these droplets. The effect of the foreign body therefore is restricted to a single drop by this technique. Thus upon cooling below the melting temperature, solidification is initiated by homogeneous nucleation in the majority of the droplets that do not contain impurities. In the case of solidification of liquid metals, the activation energy for nucleation is so great that its rate changes by orders of magnitude for a change in temperature of only several degrees centigrade.' Effectively homogeneous nucleation occurs at a critical temperature upon continuous cooling. Thus by microscopic observation of single particles during cooling, a temperature at which the rate of homogeneous nucleation becomes sensible can be determined.3 since at the temperatures at which nucleation occurs in the absence of impurities the rate of crystal growth is extremely rapid, the temperature at which the entire particle solidifies is very nearly the temperature at which the nucleation of the solidification occurs. Thus for liquids that freeze at high temperatures the onset of nucleation can be established by simply observing the temperature at which the marked heat evolution and increase in brightness of the particle occur. For liquids that freeze at lower temperatures the onset of nucleation can be determined by a rumpling and change in shape of the particle resulting from its solidification. The microscopic technique for observing the solidification of small particles has already been described." In earlier papers the nucleation of solidification of pure metals 5,6 and of alloy systems7 showing complete liquid and solid solubility have been described. In the present paper, the observations are extended to a simple eutectic system (Pb-Sn) where the possibility of the formation of two solid phases exists. Metals for the investigation were obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. in the form of pure lead and pure tin, 99.8 and 99.9 pct purity, respectively. An ingot of each of the pure metals was made into shot by heating the metals at a temperature about 50 °C in excess of the melting point and pouring the liquid slowly into a container of water at 15°C. Samples of the shotted pure metals were weighed out to make alloys containing 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 atomic pct Pb. Samples of each alloy were then melted in separate beakers. Each melt was poured through a pyrex funnel into a cylindrical mold (% in. ID). The casting solidified in 10 to 20 sec. The inside of the mold as well as the funnel through which the metal was poured were coated with graphite to eliminate adherence of the metal. Analyses were performed on some of the compositions and are given in Table I. The compositions also were checked for these samples and for those that were not analyzed by determining the spread between the liquidus and the solidus upon melting the small metal particles. These measurements agreed as well with the nominal compositions as the analyses listed above. Results The results of the supercooling experiments for the several alloys are summarized in Table II and plotted on the constitution diagram in Fig. 1. Data for the pure lead and pure tin were taken from earlier investigations. The values for the maximum supercooling of the several alloys are the average of several determinations on a number of drops of each alloy. The maximum value in any determination was within about 2 pct of the average. For the alloys containing from 20 to 60 atomic pct Sn, inclusive, two marked changes of the surface structure were observed upon cooling. At the higher temperature, after the first appearance of the solid phase it continued to grow slowly at a constant temperature and then stopped. At the lower temperature the alteration of surface structure was abrupt. For the alloys containing from 70 to 95 atomic pct Sn, inclusive, an abrupt change in surface structure was observed at a single critical temperature.

A solution of lead-fluosilicate, containing an excess of fluosilicic acid, has been found to work very satisfactorily as an electrolyte for refining lead. It conducts the current well, iseasily handled and stored, non-volatile and stable under electrolysis, may be made to contain a considerable amount of dissolved lead, and is easily prepared from inexpensive materials. It possesses, however, in common with other lead electrolytes, the defect of yielding a deposit of lead lacking in solidity, which grows in crystalline branches toward the anodes, causing short circuits. But if a reducing-action (practically accomplished by the addition of gelatine or glue) be given to the solution, a perfectly solid and dense deposit is obtained, having very nearly the same structure as electrolytically-deposited copper, and a specific gravity of about 11.36—that of cast-lead. Lead-fluosilicate may be crystallized in very soluble, brilliant crystals, resembling those of lead-nitrate and containing four molecules of water of crystallization, with the formula PbSiF,,4H20. This salt dissolves at 150 C. in 28 per cent. of its weight of water, making a sirupy solution of 2.38 sp. gr. Heated to 60° C., it melts in its water of crystallization. A neutral solution of lead-fluosilicate is partially decomposed on heating, with the formation of a basic insoluble salt and free fluosilicic acid, which keeps the rest of the salt in solution. This decomposition ends when the solution contains, perhaps, 2 per cent. of free acid; and the solution may then be evaporated without further decomposition. The solutioi~s desired for refining are not liable to this decomposition, since they contain much more than 2 per cent. of free acid. The electrical conductivity depends mainly on the acidity of the solution. My first experiments were carried out without the addition of gelatine to the fluosilicate solution. The lead-deposit con-

Amid the violent economic changes of recent years that have affected Canadian gold-mining operations so deeply, the discovery and early developments of Kirkland Lake might easily be overlooked. There was more than one "false dawn" for the district before developments finally established the fact of a superb mineralized zone extending through the present operating properties. Never far from the railway, Kirkland Lake has had the benefit of direct rail service for many years. The pioneer discovery on which the first mill and cyanide plant was erected was the "Tough-Oakes," this property being on what is now the eastern end of the producing area; some time later, the "Lake Shore" was discovered at the present center of the district, and a small plant was built upon it also. Both of these early treatment plants were of pre-war design. Progress in gold metallurgy has caused a gradual change in cyanide practice since the early days at Kirkland Lake, which may be observed in the various plants now operating there. From the beginning, it was recognized that Kirkland Lake ores were more responsive to cyanidation than to alternative recovery methods, and that their mineralization contained gold in very finely divided form. Although sulfides and tellurides are present, the quantity is small, being in the order of 1 or 2 per cent by weight, so that gravity concentration is undesirable, since gold is not confined to the sulfides. Some complication is offered by the presence of tellurides, which have caused lengthy controversy over their importance in recovery methods, but which are now generally regarded as less harmful in the light of increasingly high recoveries being obtained. Nevertheless, finely divided gold intimately associated with sulfides in the presence of tellurides; and occurring in the hard Kirkland Lake porphyry ore, substantially free from natural slime-forming constituents, indicates fine grinding. This has been the universal practice although the degree of grinding has varied a little among the different mills and is considerably finer now than formerly. The natural condition as outlined caused the establishment of fine grinding at an early stage in the development of Kirkland Lake, during the period of valuation of gold at, $20.67 per ounce. A strain anneal process has been developed for the production of iron tensile test specimens, the gauge length consisting substantially of a single crystal. Since the method has been quite successful and the results of general interest, the process will be described in detail. The essential feature of the method is the continuous, slow increase of furnace temperature during the grain growth annealing treatment. Briefly, the procedure is as follows: I. Heat machined bars to 950°C in vacuum, hold I hr, furnace cool. 2. Strain to 3.5-3.8 pct elongation (axial loading). 3. Anneal, continuously raising furnace temperature from 450 to goo°C at a rate of so0 per day. 4. Hold at 900°C for 100 hr, furnace cool. Tensile test bars with a 1/4- X I-in. gauge section have been machined from 35 in. Armco iron plate and from 3/8 in. rounds of Puron, a high purity laboratory iron. The axes of the test bars were parallel to the rolling direction. During the machining operation the bars were polished in the lathe with No. 600 emery paper, and this polished surface proved satisfactory for subsequent macrographic examination. A micrographic examination of the materials showed that both were high in FeO inclusions, those of the Puron being smaller but much more numerous. An initial vacuum anneal of I hr at 950°C followed by furnace cooling resulted in a ferritic grain size of ASTM No. 3 for Armco and No. I for Puron. Special heat treatments which reversed these initial grain sizes produced no marked improvement in single crystal production after subsequent treatments. The strain for subsequent grain growth was determined by measuring the decrease in diameter of the tensile bar during elongation. The change in diameter could be measured with a micrometer to +0.0001 in., corresponding to an accuracy of 0.08 pct for the elongation. The accuracy of the diameter measurement is also dependent on grain size because of surface roughening during elongation, and for this reason, a No. 3 grain size is preferable. Optimum grain growth was obtained for strains between 3.5 and 3.8 pct elongation. Once this critical range had been cstablished, all tests were held within it, and thus only meager data were obtained on grain growth following strains outside this range. In general, grain size decreased with increasing strain to about 5.5 pct elongation. Grain growth was occasionally ohserved with less than 3.5 pct elongation although this may have been the result of error in measurement. The program control device for the grain growth anneal consisted of a I rpm motor and worm gear drive, operating the dial shaft of a pyrometer controller through a pulley. Dial speeds of 33 and 50°C per day were tried, but the results at the slower speed were not sufficiently better to warrant the increased furnace time. The furnace tube was evacuated at intervals during the run and kept sealed the remainder of the time. When the controller reached 900°C, it was stopped and the temperature held for 100 hr. This eliminated most of the numerous minute crystallites of about 0.5 mm dimension usually visible on the etched surface of the single crystal. Since recrystallization occurs at the A3 point, the top temperature of 900°C provided a 10"

Gentlemen.-The Institute was founded 54 years ago "with the object of promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by means of meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications among its members and associates the information thus obtained," At least once a year it is well to take stock of our assets, review our performance and determine how well we are now carrying out the purposes of our Founders. There can be no question as to the work the Institute has done and is doing in promoting the arts and sciences in the fields of mining and metallurgy. One needs only to contrast the methods, the labor and the costs of a half century ago with those now to visualize how far we have gone in the development of accurate technology and sound economics in mineral and metal production. The great mines, mills and smelters of the present, handling individually thousands of tons per day, would' have been impossible except for the accumulation of knowledge, the development of theory, and the improvement in practice that has characterized the period since the foundation of the Institute. The United States has prospered in the last half century greatly, and this has been due not merely to the possession of great natural resources, but to these resources being reduced to possession and put to work. The absence of customs barriers and the freedom of trade across the whole width of this great continent has been an important factor in the growth of our wealth. Unrestricted interchange of goods has permitted each citizen to draw on the resources of the whole country. However, these are but subsidiary causes of prosperity. The free interchange of scientific and technical data, by making the whole body of facts and theory available to each worker, has made this quick and unrivaled development possible. In promoting this free trade in knowledge the Institute may claim a large place without fear of denial. The .72 volumes of TRANSACTIONS, the special volumes, the bulletins and the other publications that have been issued, include a store of knowledge of the arts and sciences related to the production and use of metals and minerals not duplicated elsewhere. Precipitation of cementite plates from carbon-rich austenite gives rise to localized formation of martensite in the matrix next to the precipitate upon quenching. The growth of this martensite is urmsually restricted. A distinct lattice relationship is found between this martensite and the cementite phase. It is concluded that the martensite is nacleated in the region of lowest carbon concentration at the austenite-cementite integace, with low-energy matching to the cementite lattice. The restriction of the growth of the martensite phase to the vicinity of the cementite plates can be explained by misfit in the austenite -martensite glissile interface and the uphill carbon gradient in the austenite. The investigation was carried out by light- and electron-microscopy and by electron-diffraction of thin foils. THE precipitation of cementite from carbon-rich austenite gives rise to a localized formation of martensite in the matrix next to the precipitate upon quenching. This behavior has been described previously by A. B. Greninger and A. R. Troiano1 for a 1.78 pct C steel ("pseudomorphic martensite"), and by A. Hultgren2 for a Fe-0.99 pct C—5.20 pct Mn steel. By measuring the axial ratio of the martensite phase,' it was found that the carbon content of this martensite was lower than that of the martensite which formed without prior partial transformation to cementite. Therefore, it was concluded that lowering of the carbon concentration in the matrix next to the precipitate raised the M, temperature locally and thus led to nucleation of martensite at the ce-mentite-austenite interface. However, the restriction of the growth of the martensite phase to the vicinity of the cementite plates cannot be explained by localized carbon impoverishment alone. Under ordinary conditions a martensite plate which has been nucleated in a favorable site can continue to grow until it encounters a physical barrier, or until it encounters a compositional barrier in the matrix, where the total free-energy change for the reaction is not negative, since it has been shown by numerous experiments that the activation energy for growth of ordinary martensite is virtually zero.' An investigation was conducted by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction to study this extraordinary martensite. It was expected that crystallographic in addition to compo- sitional conditions caused this abnormal mode of martensite formation. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE An Fe-C-Mn alloy containing 1.15 pct C and 5.1 pct Mn was used for most of the experiments. For metallographic work, specimens 15 by 15 by 3 mm were used. For preparation of thin films, the initial specimen size was 15 by 15 by 0.7 mm. The heat treatment of each specimen consisted of austenitizing for 1/2hr at 1100'~ in an argon atmosphere, subsequent isothermal holding in a lead bath at one of a series of different temperatures, and, finally, quenching into brine at room temperature. For metallographic examination, the specimens were mounted in bakelite (slight tempering effects resulted from the heat in the mounting press) ground, polished, and etched in nital. Thin films for transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction were obtained by grinding the specimens to approximately 0.2 mm thickness and subsequent electrolytical thinning. The orientation relationships were evaluated from sets of electron micrographs and selected-area electron diffraction patterns of single units of the transformation products and the adjacent matrix. Although the use of dense suspensions for coal cleaning was pioneered in the United States with the Chance sand flotation process, and during the past year a pilot plant using a magnetite suspension has started operation in this country, the more recent developments in this field of coal cleaning have occurred principally in the Netherlands. During the thirties the Dutch developed the Barvoys process, in which a medium of barite and clay is employed, the Tromp process, which utilizes a magnetite suspension, and the Loess process, in which is used the air-borne earth or soil known as loess.1-3 All these processes are finding increasing use in European coal-cleaning practice. Now a fourth process, the cyclone cleaner, is under development by the Netherlands State Mines. A cyclone thickener for reclaiming and thickening the dense suspension is a novel feature of the Loess process. Through accident, the discovery was made that the cyclone could be utilized as a cleaning device for fine coal. When the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine plugged, the overflow was found filled with clean coal free of refuse, and from this observation developed the concept of the cyclone as a coal cleaner. In June 1945 the cyclone cleaner was observed by one of the authors,' and in September 1945 it was described by Dries-sen6 in a paper presented in London before the Institute of Fuel. As the cyclone seemed to offer unusual promise as a means of extending heavy-medium cleaning to the finer sizes of coal that cannot readily be treated in existing heavy-medium processes, the Bureau of Mines, following Driessen's, presentation, launched an investigation of the cyclone as a coal cleaner. Added impetus was given to this study by the present increased interest in heavy-medium cleaning in this country. Object and Scope of Investigation Driessen's report, although comprehensive in many respects, did not include a detailed description of the cyclone cleaner, and contained almost no information on the influence of the various operating variables of the cyclone. It was necessary, therefore, to investigate the influence of the cyclone adjustments on its performance before studying the application of the cyclone to various coal-washing problems. The present report is confined entirely to these preliminary tests, designed to demonstrate the operating characteristics of the cyclone. The investigation has been in progress

Trends in battery design are making normal decasing increasingly difficult. Lead in air, sulfur dioxides, and solid/liquid waste heavy metal restrictions are tightening. There is no clearly defined industry trend toward a given process, but it is clear that plants will be larger, less labor-intensive, and automated.

DESIRABLE as it is to summarize what has been set forth in preceding chapters, the task can only be approached with great hesitation. What follows represents the personal views of the author at the moment of writing, reserving the privilege to change them on more mature reflection or in the light of further evidence. With that reservation they may be stated somewhat as follows. Education for the mineral industries falls into two categories; general education and technical vocational, using the word vocational not in its usual sense but to signify preparation for specific activities, in which sense a law school is a vocational school. Even at the beginning, as indicated in the first chapter, mineral industry education was partly general and, partly technical and that relationship still persists, because technical education requires a firm basis of general education. Our general American system is to provide free public' general education through the twelfth grade, or completion of high-school work, though there are already many technical vocational high schools, and even in a community where nearly all the young people are preparing for entrance to college there will be some who wish to qualify for employment at the end of the high-school course, or even on completing junior high. Our educational system, therefore, has not only to provide education for those who intend to proceed beyond the twelfth grade but also for those who, for a variety of reasons, may wish or be forced to cease full-time education at any level between the first and twelfth grades. This study has been chiefly concerned with the problem of what kind and how much technical education to provide for those who have completed the twelfth grade and who wish to make their living in the mineral industries. A steam drive of heavy oil was field tested in a shallow, low oil-saturation formation near Deerfield, Mo. The pilot was conducted in the Warner formation, a sandstone containing an 18' API oil having 1,000-cp viscosity at the 60F origind reservoir temperature. The formation war at a depth of 160 ft. Steam was injected into nine input wells arranged in an array of inverted five-spot patterns. In the completely confined center pattern, 14 temperature observation wells were installed to obtain thermal data and observe test progress. Late in the test, slugs of ammonia were injected to trace the flow paths of injected fluids. From the test area about 7,000 bbl of oil were produced. Data were obtained on areal and vertical temperature distribution, steam front advance, reservoir fluid movement and terminal saturations. This field test of a steam drive (I) demonstrated the feasibility of the method, (2) confirmed that the low residual oil saturations observed in the laboratory are obtained in the steam-swept region in the field and (3) provided recovery and conformance data for one set of field conditions. INTRODUCTION The Deerfield steam drive pilot test was conducted in a shallow sandstone containing 1,000-cp oil. The venture was undertaken cooperatively by the research and production departments of Carter Oil Co., which organizations have since been consolidated into Esso Production Research Co. and Humble Oil & Refining Co.. respectively. The production department was interested in steam injection at Deerfield because it appeared to be the most promising method of commercially producing this heavy oil deposit. The research department was interested in applying the new recovery method and in evaluating its performance in the field. At the time the test was begun, the initial oil saturation was not well known. Subsequent air coring and early pilot results confirmed that there was too little oil in place for profitable commercial exploitation by steam. Pilot termination at that time, however, would have been premature for evaluating field performance of the process, and the tert was continued to obtain additional data on steam injection as a recovery method. The test was located in Vernon County, Mo., about 10 miles north of the town of Deerfield and only a few miles from the Kansas border. The pilot site was selected as typical of the area. The location represented neither the highest nor the lowest oil saturation region in the acreage under lease in 1954. The steam drive was conducted in the Warner sandstone of Lower Pennsylvanian age. At the test site the top of the Warner occurs at about 160 ft subsurface and the formation is a fine- to medium-grained micaceous sandstone that dips gently to the northwest at the rate of 12 to 15 ft/ mile. A cross-section and permeability profile of the test location are shown in Fig. 1. At the pilot location the average total thickness of the Warner formation is about 43 ft, but the effective thickness for steam drive is 26 ft. Two distinct types of hydrocarbon saturation are apparent. The lower portion of the total sand, averaging about 17 ft thick, contains a very heavy asphaltic material that will not flow under the influence of a steam drive. This bottom interval, referred to as a dead oil residue, was not considered as part of the net sand undergoing steam exploitation. The initial formation and fluid properties of the upper 26 ft in the test area are summarized in Table 1, and variation of oil viscosity with temperature is shown in Fig. 2. Imbibition tests on preserved core samples taken at the end of the pilot test showed that the Warner sandstone was then neutral or slightly water-wet. Initially, the reservoir may have been strongly water-wet as indicated by low relative permeability to water during both water injection testing and early steam injection. PRIOR HISTORY Initial production tests of wells at the pilot site produced water with only a faint show of oil. No gas was produced except at Well 7-W in the pilot area and at another well about 1/3 mile northeast of the pilot. Prior to the start of the steam drive, a two-well water injection test and a two-well air injection test were conducted. No oil was produced by either. Water was pumped into Well I-W in the northeast corner of the pilot area with simultaneous production from Well 1 (Fig. 3). The air-injection tat was run at input Well 9-W and its offset, Well 2, in the southwest corner. Air and water injectivities were about the same when corrected for viscosity and pressure differences.

It is with sincere regret that the members of the Institute will have heard of the death, on March 17th last, at Terre Haute, Ind., of Professor Charles 0. Thompson, A.M., Ph.D., President of the Rose Polytechnic Institute of that city, and for many years pre viously the head of the Worcester County (Mass.) Free Institute of Industrial Science, and in 1881 and 1882 one of the managers of this society. To us he was chiefly known by the excellent character of the work which he had performed, as a recognized leader among the technical educators of the country. He was a constant, and interested atten dant at our meetings, seeking to acquaint himself not less with all that was noteworthy in the practical attainments and developments of the branches of industry represented by our membership, than with such such facts as would be of service to him in shaping or guiding a wise course of instruction in the institutions of which he had charge. We shall not soon forget him, or the genial courtesy of his manner, or his ready words and thoughtful comments. Charles Oliver Thompson was born September 25th, 1836, at East Windsor Hill, Conn., where his father, Rev. William Thomp son, D.D., was professor in the Connecticut Theological Seminary, since removed to Hartford. The son was fitted for college under the late Paul A. Chadbourne, and entered Dartmouth College in 1854. He was graduated in 1858 with honors. In all the studies of his course he had maintained a high rank, but showed marked proficiency in chemistry and mechanical philosophy. In 1861 he received the degree of A.M., followed by that of Ph.D. from his own college in 1879, and from Williams in 1880. In September, 1858, the year of his graduation, he became principal of the Peacham Academy, Vt., remaining in that position until November of 1864, though during that period he devoted several months to practical work as a surveyor and civil engineer. Thus his experiences were developing the qualities which, later on, fitted him to carry out so successfully the plans of the thoughtful projectors of a new system of technical education, along a path before untrodden, but which the test of time and the indisputable proof of success have shown to be both wise and fruitful.

Cubic ZnSe crystals have been grown with HCl, HBr, and I, as chemical transport reagents. The growth of large, well faceted crystals is in the order HCl < HBr < I, with some produced by I, transport being 1 cm on an edge. ZnSe:I crystals showed no strain in cross polarized light and were homogeneous as determined by electron microprobe. These ZnSe:I crystals had a mobility at 25°C of about 300 sq cm per v-sec and contained 103 dislocations per sq cm; further, these crystals were pure cubic and showed both photolumi-nescence and photo conductance. Doping was attempted during crystal growth. ZnS and Zn (S,Se) crystals were also grown by I, transport. ZnSe crystals have been grown by most of the common techniques.1"6 Of these, chemical vapor transport as developed by Kaldis2 showed promise of producing high perfection, cubic ZnSe. With chemical transport, crystals can be grown far below the transition temperature for conversion of cubic to hexagonal structure. A small temperature gradient between source and growth region tends to allow near equilibrium growth, which should lead to good crystalline perfection. Because it is necessary to form volatile compounds, halogens or their compounds are extensively used as transport agents. HCl, HBr, and I, were compared as transport agents for growth of ZnSe crystals. Doping during crystal growth was attempted. ZnS and ZnSxSe1-x crystals were also grown by chemical transport. Electrical and optical properties of the crystals were examined. EXPERIMENTAL Fig. 1 is a sketch of the growth apparatus, which was a modification of Kaldis&apos;. A quartz rod which butted against the seed crystal served as a heat sink to promote growth only on the seed. Initially, crystal growth was attempted with ZnSe prepared by wet chemical methods. Because such a material contained oxides and selenates, HC1 reacted with these oxygen compounds to form H2O and no ZnSe transport occurred. Further, this ZnSe contained about 10 ppm Cu plus other impurities. High purity ZnSe, containing small amounts or no oxygen compounds, was prepared by reaction of H2Se with zinc vapors at 600° to 800°C in an atmosphere of palladium diffused H2.7 The ZnSe thus produced was usually copper free and contained only 1 ppm by weight of magnesium as determined by emission spectrographic analysis. G.E.&apos;s electronic grade ZnS, which had about 10 ppm metallic impurities, was used without further treatment. ZnS-ZnSe charges were prepared by mixing the two compounds together, then sintering 24 hr at 1100°C in an H2S ambient. The gases, HBr and HC1, were commercial grade, of 99.9 pct purity, while the I2 was 99.999 pct pure. The single crystal seeds with (111) faces for growth were mechanically held in place by sealing the outer quartz tube to the growth tube. After the charge was introduced, the system was outgassed at l0-5 torr while heated to 500°C. The desired quantities of transport reagents were then sealed off in the system, which had been cooled to 25°C. The growth tubes were inserted into a furnace with the desired temperature and thermal gradient. The system was allowed to cool for 1 to 12 hr from growth temperatures of about 850" to 25°C. The tubes remained stationary during crystal growth. HCl CHEMICAL TRANSPORT GROWTH Preliminary runs with HC1 had a temperature gradient of 100° to 200°C and no seed or heat sink. The mining and ventilating system used in development work in the Pittsburgh Seam in northern West Virginia is discussed. The seam conditions and the nature of the accompanying methane gas are described. The type of equipment and the mining cycle will be discussed, showing how they are well suited for very gaseous development work. Face ventilation in development work is possibly the fastest growing problem of the industry. The coal mines of the future will be faced with the prospect of mining from under increasing depths of cover. Consequently, larger and larger amounts of methane gas probably will be found. The Pittsburgh Seam, in northern West Virginia, is an example of an area already faced with this problem. At the present time, most of the development work being done in this seam lies beneath 500 to 1200 ft of cover. The Pittsburgh Seam in this area has always been very gassy—even near the outcrop—and the recent development work has been accompanied with extremely large volumes of gas. In many cases, a single development section has liberated in excess of 1,000,000 cfm in 24 hr. This problem of heavy gas liberation was the chief concern, several years ago, when continuous mining equipment was first considered at Christopher Coal Co. All of us were apprehensive about the liberation that would accompany rapid extraction in a single working place. However, the experience during the past few years has shown that this ability to mine only one place at a time, is actually the key to working this type of coal. With all of the mining or advancement concentrated in one place, the ventilation can also be concentrated. By this it is meant that continuous mining permits the active working place to be ventilated with a maximum amount of fresh air, taken directly from the intake source without first passing another working place. Continuous mining (and a good ventilating system) also permits a much greater concentration of attention or vigilance to the actual working place. There are two things that are very important to the mining of coal having high rates of liberation. First, adequate volumes of air are necessary. Second, and perhaps more important, a mining and ventilating system must be used that will provide an uninterrupted flow of air to every portion of the working section. Liberations of this magnitude take only a few seconds of interruption for a dangerous accumulation of gas to occur. With adequate volumes of air available, the ability to concentrate ventilation more than offsets the concentration of gas emission that is inherent with continuous mining. The mining system used with continuous mining equipment at Humphrey Mine is similar to the system used at many mines in the area for development work. This system is designed to favor ventilation, realizing that other efficiencies are meaningless if the equipment must stop because of ventilation difficulties. This plan is especially well suited to minimizing ventilation interruptions. Basically, the overall plan of mining is to develop headings into virgin coal and encircle or block out large areas. These blocks are generally at least 2000 ft sq. The purpose of this blocking out is to bleed gas from the area before pillaring. Experience has shown this method to be quite effective, even in the most gassy areas. The gas in this field seems to migrate or flow readily from the solid coal into the outside return headings of the development work. The numerous clay veins and slips that are found in the area are extremely good avenues for gas flow. A block of coal, surrounded with development headings, usually bleeds off readily; and since it is cut off from the virgin coal, it is not subject to gas migration, through the seam, from this source. However, the outside return of the encircling development work, adjacent to the virgin coal, may liberate gas for years. This liberation from the outside ribs in the virgin coal is the reason split ventilation is used in development work. If split ventilation were not used, there would, in many cases, be a serious build-up of gas in the intake before it could reach the working face. Fig. 1 shows a typical development section having seven headings. The two outside places on each side are returns, and the three center headings serve as intakes.
