Complying with air pollution regulations created the need to dispose of increased sulfuric acid production by the Morenci smelter. As a result, a two-module leaching plant was constructed to leach Morenci flotation tailings. The leaching plant was equipped to perform the following operations: leach feed pumping, agitated leaching, two-stage countercurrent decantation, neutralization of leached tailings, and copper precipitation. Ancillary facilities were provided for neutralizer and flocculant preparation as well as precipitant handling and recovery of precipitates. Plant control is automatic from a central control panel supervised on a shift schedule by one operator and two helpers. Construction of the first module was initiated in April 1973 and leaching of tailings commenced in November 1974. Construction of the second module began in January 1975 and was completed in November 1975.

It is a fair assumption that the main purpose of any diagram is to present facts to the eye in more convenient form than they could be tabulated in figures, and this implies that a screen diagram should set forth in a convenient and familiar form certain facts as to the character of the material screened regardless of the screen standards used, and it seems particularly desirable on account of the well-known differences in the size of openings of different laboratory screens having the same nominal mesh. In making screen-sizing tests it has been customary first to consider the largest size, going progressively to the smallest, and this seems to have led to the practice of placing the smallest size .at the right-hand side of the diagram and measuring toward the left. This is not altogether convenient and might be changed to advantage, but for illustration I have preserved that feature and present the method just as I have used it for over 2 years. Direct plotting in which the intervals on the diagram are proportional to the sizes of the openings, or to the arithmetical difference between them, seems at first sight more natural and is extremely useful for certain purposes, but it makes the diagram very crowded in the smaller screen sizes while the larger ones occupy unnecessary space, making it less convenient for most purposes, and for that reason the method here discussed is the well-known one based on the ratio between openings, and is plotted in logarithms instead of the direct values of the screen opening. Metric coordinate paper is convenient, although not necessary; it is recommended, as the use of the metric scale gives a diagram of convenient size, but any scale of equal parts may be used. In order to make any screen diagram translatable in terms of any standard screen size, it is necessary to have noted on the size scale of the diagram all points corresponding to the openings of the various screens in question, instead of a single series of points as with a single screen. In drawing the diagram assume 0.001 in. (corresponding approximately to 0.025 mm.) to be the smallest size to be considered and fix this as the zero point at the lower right-hand corner of the diagram. This value is selected because the values are to be plotted in logarithms, and the logarithm of 1 is zero. Then lay off to the left for the position of each screen

DURING the smelting of the sulfide ores of copper, nickel, and certain other metals, a matte phase is formed. For a better understanding of the physico-chemical properties of mattes, binary systems such as Cu-S, Ni-S, Fe-S, and so forth, should be studied, especially in the vicinity of liquid compounds such as Cu2S, Ni3S2, FeS, and so forth. These compounds are relatively stable in the solid state although they can exhibit appreciable deviations from stoichiometry. With small deviations from stoichiometry there are large changes in the activity of both sulfur and metal this is a characteristic of both solid and liquid sul-fides near the stoichiometric compositions. In the vicinityof molten Cu2S,1 for instance, the activity of sulfur increases about 100 times for a 0.012 increase in the mole fraction of sulfur and, correspondingly, the activity of copper decreases greatly. In this sens the minor deviations from stoichiometry should be carefully taken into account in studies of such metal-sulfur melts. Metal-sulfur melts may be considered to have properties intermediate between metallic solutions and molten salts, i.e., neither entirely metallic nor entirely ionic. The radius of the ion sZ- is 1.84 as compared with 1.04? for a single bond covalent s.2 It is therefore inferred that when the sulfur is more ionic its partial molar volume is larger, although metal-metal, metal-sulfur, and sulfur-sulfur interactions may bring about further complexities. Thus, it is to be expected that the molar volumes, which are derived from density-composition relations, will help in resolving the structure of the melts. In this study the maximum bubble pressure method with bubbling gases of H2, H2S, and Ar, .was employed to measure the density. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Silver of 99.95 pct purity was melted in an alumina crucible and hydrogen gas was then bubbled through the liquid for the deoxidation. In preparation of Cu2S, electrolytic copper powder (>99.9 pct Cu) was mixed with precipitated sulfur and heated to 1200°C in an alumina crucible under a hydrogen atmosphere. Mixtures having the approximate compositions FeS and Ni3S2 were prepared by heating reagent grade electrolytic iron or reduced nickel powder with precipitated sulfur under a hydrogen atmosphere. The H2S gas was of 98.5 pct purity, the impurities being mostly CO2 and CS2 which hardly contaminate the melts. Apparatus. The crucible system is shown schematically in Fig. 1. To minimize the variation of melt composition during a density measurement, the apparatus was designed in such a way that either Ar, H2, H2S, or mixtures of these gases could be used as the bubbling gas. When the melt had a high partial pressure of sulfur, H2S gas was used. When the partial pressure of sulfur was so low that oxygen might dissolve in the melt, the use of H2 was preferred. In intermediate cases, argon or mixtures of H2-H2S were used. Density of Dibutylphtalate. Dibutylphtalate was used as the manometer fluid. Relative to distilled water, the density of the dibutylphtalate, pdib g per cc, was measured and found to be: pdib (25°C) = 1.046 i 0.002. CHARACTER OF THE WORK IN HAND IN planning the present experiments, we have made a particular effort to secure that adjustment of working conditions which would render the forthcoming tests most serviceable by way of indicating the comparative properties of the three different commercial grades of copper used. More specifically, we have endeavored to obtain certain definite information with respect to the relative behavior under test of ordinary electrolytic copper and furnace-refined lake copper containing (a) a moderate percentage of arsenic and (b) a rather large percentage of arsenic, in addition to the usual content of silver and other impurities. These comparisons were made systematic and comprehensive by testing throughout a series of (eight) reductions running from 0 to 70 per cent. in the case of cold-rolled metal, and throughout a series of (15) temperatures running from 100° C. to 1,000° C. in the case of annealed metal. In other words, a survey of properties similar to that made by Grard,1 in the case of electrolytic copper, was here repeated (with modifications) and extended to two other commercial varieties of copper.

PROCESSES for the direct production of iron and steel from ores are hardy perennials, and new processes and revivals of old ones are continually being brought to the attention of the investing public if not to the attention of metallurgists. Direct production of iron and steel is so simple that it offers a fertile field for the promoter. Unfortunately in this way direct processes have acquired a bad name, not always deserved, with conservative capitalists and metallurgists. Direct processes cannot, except in special instances, be looked upon as a substitute for any single operation in present iron and steel practice but must be considered, as one link in an entirely new chain of metallurgical process from ore to finished steel. Thus it is, in my opinion, inadvisable to consider the use of sponge-iron processes as a means of treating ore of ordinary blast-furnace grade to produce open-hearth feed. In time I think it will be found equally inadvisable to smelt iron-ore concentrates in the blast furnace.

TWENTY years or so ago I wrote an article on management which consisted mostly of a chart similar to thousands of others of that day showing line functions, staff functions, and the chain of command in a typical mining organization. Since hen we have been "bossing" from the faces to the swivel chair and we have made many errors of no little expense to our companies. We have kept the chart in mind but many times we have changed the functions to fit the people we have had to work with. Good management after all is getting results with the people, the equipment, the supplies, and the natural conditions of the coal seam or seams and adjacent strata present. We have made, with little effort, a good showing with average people and equipment in good natural conditions. We have made a miserable showing (although expending every personal effort) with better than aver- age people and equipment in bad natural conditions. In the latter case many of our stockholders felt that better management would have found some way to save their investment. Perhaps they were right.

Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. is the largest lead-zinc mine in Japan and is composed of two mines, Tochibora Mine and Mozumi Mine, which have daily production rates of 5,200 metric tons and 1,800 metric tons of crude ore respectively. In the mines, there are many massive pyro-metasomatic deposits which have been derived from the replacement of limestone. The deposits are composed of skarn minerals which mainly contain hedenberite. The country rock is generally hard and fine-grained gneiss. These deposits have been mined by means of the sublevel stoping method, induced block caving method and sublevel caving method at Tochibora Mine and mainly by the cut and fill method at Mozumi Mine. Since the 19601s, the trackless mining system has been introduced successfully into both mines, and is still promoted to be applied over wider areas. The underground hauling system is simplified remark- ably and much improved by adopting trackless ramps to the existing vertical and horizontal underground framework. Moreover, through the combination of the trackless mining system with the mining methods stated above, a notable increase in efficiency has been achieved. This is due to the high performance of the introduced machinery, reductions in man power of miscellaneous jobs, and also has enabled a highly efficient performance through its mobility. In addition, as it becomes possible to realize a flexible development to meet the irregularly shaped deposits and also becomes much easier to recover the remaining pillars by secondary mining, the extraction rate of ore has been improved considerably. With the introduction of the trackless mining system, the development method has been changed, thus former hand-hold leg-drills are now mostly re- placed by jumbo-type drills. Repair shops for Load-Haul-Dump machines also have been provided with an established service system. Reinforcement and rearrangement of the ventilation system has been carried out.

The microstructural stability of 59 carbon and low alloy steels after 34,000 hr exposure at 900' and 1050°F, including the weld heat-affected zone, is discussed. The tensile and creep rupture properties of the parent metal of many of the steels before and after 10,000 hr exposure are presented. SEAMLESS pipe has been used for many years at elevated temperatures. When seamless first began to be used, operating temperatures and pressures were relatively low and the steel produced adequately met the existing requirements. The need for knowledge of creep properties and graphitiza-tion was nonexistent. Today the requirements for tubular products have changed considerably. Operating temperatures and pressures are increasing continually and corrosion, particularly at high temperatures, presents a problem. Carbon steels have, under these conditions, certain economic advantages particularly in oil refinery use. However, the use of low alloy steels in the generation of steam power has increased appreciably due to the influence of molybdenum on creep strength and the control of graphitization with chromium. The behavior of carbon and certain low alloy steels after long periods of exposure at 900° and 1050°F (480° and 565°C) has been investigated. The steels were examined before and after 10,000 to 34,000 hr exposure. Results obtained with material exposed at 1200°F (650°C) are not presented due to the severe oxidation and resulting decarburiza-tion after long periods of exposure. The graphitization characteristics of carbon and low alloy steels are of fundamental concern to the users of these materials. This is particularly true where welded joints are employed. In order to evaluate properly the behavior of steels at elevated temperatures, it is desirable to employ not only long periods of exposure under controlled conditions, but to use material with known properties and steelmaking practices. The purpose of this investigation has been to study the microstructure of the weld and the tensile and creep rupture properties of the parent metal after long periods of exposure at elevated temperatures. In the report'.' of a previous investigation data were presented on the microstructure, impact strength, hardness, and oxidation characteristics after 10,000 hr exposure at elevated temperatures. When this investigation was planned, methods for controlling the graphitization characteristics of steel were not established and, therefore, a number of special alloy steels were included in the study. During the exposure of these steels, the influence of aluminum in accelerating the rate of graphitization and the inhibiting power of chromium were established by various investigators. Also, the vanadium-bearing steels, because of their outstanding creep properties, received attention. As a result of these developments, considerable progress has been made in the field of high temperature tubular products, and the necessity for special alloys to prevent graph-itization has been restricted largely to the use of chromium. Material Chemical analysis, deoxidation treatment, and austenitic grain size of the 59 steels discussed in this paper are shown in Table I. The steels were forged to 1x1 in. bars with the exception of steels 12B, 12DX, 12DY, 12DZ, 70, 70A, 72 to 78, 82, and 83 which were machined from heavy wall pipe. All bars were surface ground before exposure. Heat treatment before exposure is shown in Table 11. Fundamentally, slag control in acid open-hearth steelmaking cannot be considered from any different viewpoint than can that in basic open-hearth melting. The same laws of mass action and distribution apply in both cases, so that while most, if not all, of the recent intensive study of slag-metal reactions have been carried on in basic furnaces the principles evolved are nevertheless applicable to acid open-hearth steelmaking and it is therefore not our intention to discuss the various possible chemical reactions in the slag and between slag and metal. The points we have to carry in mind, in considering acid melting practice, are the differences in the type of steels produced and the difference in the chemistry of both the steel and the slag. The acid furnace is used to produce, let us not say "quality" steel, for, after all, a "quality" steel for one purpose is not a "quality" steel for another, but steels that require acid melting practice to be of proper "quality." Steels that are required to have high physical properties in tests taken transversely from forgings are peculiarly the product of acid furnaces. In this class may be placed various ordnance materials, notably gun forgings and projectiles and large commercial forgings requiring high transverse ductility. Forgings requiring an extremely hard surface, polished and free from imperfections, are also typical acid-steel products. Of course, such forgings can be made of basic open-hearth steel, but not with the same assurance of success. At the start, the preparation of the slag in the acid and basic furnaces differs. Lime is charged in the beginning of a basic heat to form a slag, but in the acid furnace nothing is added for the special purpose of producing a slag when the heat is melted down. The result is that the acid furnace has much less volume of slag than the basic. The slag formed upon melting down is made up almost entirely of the oxides of elements contained in the metallic charge, notably oxides of iron, manganese and silicon, the amount of silica being augmented somewhat by erosion of the furnace lining. A typical acid open-hearth slag, when the bath is completely melted, will have an analysis about as follows: CaO, 3.40 per cent; SiO2, 51.9; Fe2O3, 1.25 ; FeO, 28.86; Al2o3, 1.82; MnO, 12.22. The high iron oxide content of the slag gives it a black appearance. The metal is high in carbon and some manganese and silicon will be present, depending on the amount in the original charge, the amount of

This paper summarizes extensive data supplied by 40 copper converter plants in 18 countries, and includes a partial analysis and comments on the effect of converter slag composition and temperature on the fomzation and elimination of magnetite and the life of basic and neutral refractories. APRELIMINARY draft of this paper, including data from 26 companies which had submitted replies to a questionnaire, was presented at the Annual Meeting of the AIME held in New York in February, 1956. Publication was delayed in the expectation that additional replies would be received, and justification for the subsequent delay may be found in the fact that the present revised paper contains data from 40 converter plants situated in 18 different countries. The suggestion that a questionnaire be sent to the major copper and copper-nickel plants outside the U.S.S.R. and associated countries arose at the Los Angeles Annual Meeting in February, 1953, where several papers dealing with converter construction and operation were presented. In private discussions which followed, a group of metallurgists and refractories engineers raised the question why practices varied so much at different plants. Why did magnesite brick give superior service to chrome-magnesite in some plants but chrome-magnesite prove superior in others? Would metallurgical studies point the way to the development of still better refractories? Could magnetite formation be prevented in converter slags and reverber-atory furnace mattes? If this was feasible, why was a heavy circulating load of magnetite tolerated, when, in all probability, it increased copper losses in the reverberatory slags and, in some cases, made it necessary to shut down the furnaces periodically to clean out the accumulated magnetite? A GENERAL extension and appreciation of the stereocartographic principle of precise mapmaking is evident. Under the stimulus of war, many radical improvements in aerial photography, and in airplane and motor con? struction are indicated for the future. A survey of advanced military designs points to the conclusion that the familiar radial motor is destined for oblivion under the impact of the inverted "V" type.' The latest German inverted "V" design of 1000 hp. is 68 in. long whereas British and American motors of the same power are 72 and 94 in. respectively, suggesting a horsepower-weight efficiency ratio in favor of the former. Application of the pressure cooling principle has made possible the development of in-line air? cooled engines which offer many advantages, such as small frontal area, unobstructed vision for the pilot, freedom from vibration because rotative speeds are not limited by fundamental unbalance of reciprocating parts, freedom from excessive bearing loads, and less weight per horsepower.

The first large scale application of radio remote control equipment to standard gage railroad trains has been achieved at the Morenci mine of Phelps Dodge Corp. at Morenci, Ariz. Twenty or more ore and waste haulage trains are remote control operated at any one time, each with a one-man crew. Reduction of train crews from two men to one man has materially lowered the total cost of train operation. Elimination of brakemen has also resulted in an improvement in train efficiency brought about by a shortening of train haulage cycle times.

Close examination of most so-called new processes in mineral dressing reveals that they were conceived and developed a long time ago. High-intensity magnetic separation is no exception. Although its application in iron ore beneficiation seems new, in Germany the process has been commercially successful for almost two decades. High-intensity separators have long been standard equipment in the glass sand industry; they have also been used in concentrating some of the more unusual paramagnetic minerals. The basic features of an induced-rotor, high-intensity magnetic separator were described by Désiré Korda in Paris in 1905,1 and many patents have since been issued for improvements on the original design. Fig. 1 shows the basic design of an induced-rotor separator. Several U. S. manufacturers have been supplying induced-rotor separators for many years, but these are all devices of relatively low capacity, not suitable for treating such low-cost commodities as iron ore. On the other hand, two German manufacturers are offering induced-rotor separators of high capacity, both proven in the field.

The tight electric power supply is one of the most dramatic problems facing the mining industry in 1971. This is caused by rising demands for energy. Clean-fuel and air-pollution controls have contributed to the problems of producing energy from sulfur oil and coal. Coking coal has become scarce. One stimulating development is that coal is no longer the cinder in the mining industry's eye. In fact, it may be the favorite candidate as a base for fuel within a few years. Synthetic gas from coal is the watchword. In dedicating a multi-million- dollar project aimed at converting coal into oil and gas, Hollis M. Dole, Assistant Secretary of the Interior, recently made it clear that coal, which has been taking a back seat to nuclear fission research and study grants, is now coming into its own. Conversion pilot plants are being activated in all parts of the nation.

"Nestling in a little valley, right under the shadow of the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains and just over the great Continental Divide on the Pacific Slope, are Columbia Gardens, Butte's one rare beauty spot. Here purling brooks, fed from springs of snow-water course through the grounds to lend their aid later in making the great Columbia River. It is a question which has done more to make this oasis the charming place it is, nature or man, for both appear to have put forth their best efforts. The inspiring scenery surrounding the gardens is found in close association with the consummate art of the trained landscape gardener. The most delicate flowers, nurtured in large greenhouses, in the pleasant months of early spring and summer are transplanted into outdoor beds and in many instances woven, as it were, into beautiful designs. Green trees and grass on every side rest the tired eyes.Butte owes this delightful breathing spot to former Senator W. A. Clark, who owns and maintains it. A decade ago there were five large smelters belching forth their obnoxious fumes upon the city, making it impossible for vegetation to flourish within the confines of the town, a condition which fortunately no longer prevails. Primarily with a view of furnishing the children with a healthy playground, other than the muddy or dusty streets, Mr. Clark bought and developed the land upon which these grounds are situated. Upon numerous days in each month during the summer season, when school no longer demands attendance, his street railway carries the little folks to and from this ideal spot, free of all charge. ""Children's Day"" at the gardens presents a scene of life and happiness which once seen can never be forgot."
