Auburn Dam will be a thin, double-curvature concrete arch dam about 685 ft high. With a crest length of about 4000 ft, it will be the world's longest single-arch dam. The site is located on the North Fork of the American River about 40 miles northeast of Sacramento, Calif. Construction is scheduled to get under way in 1970. In planning for the design and construction of Auburn Dam (see artist's conception), the foundation material, with its various discontinuities, is being investigated and the structural characteristics of the rock mass evaluated. The investigation and testing programs will aid in defining the pertinent geologic features and their individual and cumulative influence on the foundation. The work includes geologic surface mapping, surface trenching, core drilling, geophysics, tunneling, excavating shafts and raises, performing in-situ tests, and conducting laboratory tests on core and block samples. Competent amphibolite is the predominant material in the foundation, but significant bodies of chloritic, talcose, and metasedimentary rocks, a strongly developed jointing pattern, faults, and shear zones also affect the deformability of the rock mass. A comprehensive rock mechanics program, closely coordinated with geologic investigations as well as the engineering studies, therefore is required The rock mechanics work is a combination of many analytical studies and experimental investigations. The experimental work includes laboratory tests on core samples from holes drilled for geological studies of the entire foundation and in-situ tests performed in selected areas. The laboratory testing program evaluates the general properties of all important rock types and aids in correlating many of the key structural features encountered within the foundation. OF all the alloying elements used in commercial aluminum alloys, copper stands out as by far the most important, and it is perhaps for this reason that the constitution of the aluminum-copper system has received the attention of a number of experimenters covering a period of approximately 20 years. It would be expected that during this time the equilibrium relations had been thoroughly and exactly worked out. In a general way this is true, but there is a surprising lack of agreement in the details of the high aluminum end of the diagram, particularly in regard to the solid solubility of copper in aluminum, which has been given variously as 2 per cent. to 5 per cent. at the eutectic temperature. The importance of this is much greater than might at first appear to one unfamiliar with modern commercial aluminum alloys. This is true because, with one exception, the susceptibility of the strong alloys to heat treatment depends, in part at least, upon the solid solubility relations of copper in aluminum. In 1919, Merica, Waltenberg, and Freeman1 published the first detailed information on these solubility relations. They found that the solubility of copper decreases with falling temperature from about 4 per cent. at 5.25° C. to about 1 per cent. at 300° C. and is apparently still diminishing at lower temperatures. In 1921 there was published a brief account of the results obtained in the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, England.2 This laboratory, however, reported that 5 per cent. of copper is soluble in aluminum at 540° C., and that this amount decreases to about 3 per cent. at 20° C.

It is well known that particles of different sizes are not distributed evenly throughout the average charge in an iron blast furnace. Just how great the disparity in particle size in different parts of a single plane in a furnace may be is indicated by the results of some recent investiga-tion1,2 conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a furnace operating on Lake ores. The wide variations found in gas velocity, gas composition, and temperature from the periphery to the center of the upper charge column were caused by the great variation in particle size of the raw materials used and were also greatly influenced by the methods of charging. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the influence of different methods of charging and of the treatment of raw materials upon the size distribution of the solid particles in the blast furnace. A more complete report will appear later as a Bureau of Mines technical paper. Importance of Gas-solid Contact One of the authors has pointed out in a previous report? that the operation of the blast-furnace process is entirely dependent on contact between the gas stream and the solid particles in the stock. The gas stream carries the necessary heat as well as the carbon monoxide molecules that do the work of rednction. In the parts of the furnace in which there is little or no contact between the gas stream and the solids there can be little work of reduction. Obviously, the part of the apparatus that is not doing the work for which it is intended is inefficient; the ideal condition is one in which all portions of the stock column are

THE problem of eliminating the hazards of hoisting in mines has been with us since the industry passed its earliest stages, when coal and ore could be won from surface working and tunnels. At first, safety devices were introduced as means of decreasing the amount of labor necessary, to produce the mineral, or to increase the amount that could be obtained from a certain opening. For example, crude, ladders replaced winding footpaths or steps cut into the walls of the pit or shaft, decreasing the distance it was necessary to carry the product to the surface and eliminating, to some extent, the hazard introduced by the precarious footing afforded by such paths and steps. Later, instead of being carried from the pit on the backs of men, the product was hoisted in buckets or baskets on a rope passing over a pulley or around a windlass. Thus the capacity of the pit was considerably increased, and the hazard due to making many trips up and down the shaft was eliminated. From such beginnings accident prevention in mine hoisting advanced with the importance of the industry, until at present hoisting compares favorably with other branches of the mining industry with reference to safe practices. As in the other branches, this progress has been accomplished along two general lines-by legislation, rules, and education, and by the installation of safety devices. Though due credit must be given the former, it is not so satisfactory as the latter. Legislation, to be effective, requires a policing and inspection system to guarantee enforcement, such as we cannot hope to inaugurate. Rules may be satisfactory so long as the employer controls the labor market, and dismissal or some other form of discipline is an effective means of insuring obedience to the rules; but where labor demand is in excess of the supply, or where labor organizations are in control, such measures are not effective. An educational campaign will draw attention to hazards and may awaken a desire to avoid accidents by exercising the proper care.

Beyond the industrial suburbs of Melbourne to the southeast are brown coal deposits just under the fertile soil of the Latrobe Valley. These deposits rank as one of the wonders of the world. The manner in which this resource is put to use is one of the great engineering accomplishments of our time and also a prime example of Australian elan. The brown coal, with over 60% water content, occurs in beds from 200 to 400 ft thick, under 50 ft of cover. Fifty thousand tons of coal per day move in a nearly continuous stream from mining face to boilers. The power plants supply two thirds of the State of Victoria's requirements, about 800 megawatts. Surge capacity between mine and power plant is sufficient for 12 hr steaming time! Victorian brown coals have been known since the middle of the 19th century. However, it took a strike of bituminous coal miners in 1915 to bring brown coal permanently into the picture as a fuel for power generation. In Australia, power generation is a State function. The great development of brown coals has been under the State Electricity Commission of Victoria.

Continuous mining has revolutionized the coal industry but intensified the problems of earlier mechanization. From the installation of the first miner, it was recognized that face ventilation would be one of these problems. To establish an efficient work cycle for the equipment being used, conventional mechanized mining provides four or more development faces. Continuous mining, relying on a single machine, requires only one face, although more than one can be driven alternately by the same machine. In gaseous areas mined by the older methods, the intermittent rate of exposure allows time for the face to bleed off or be cleared, and the width obtained with conventional units makes it possible to hang a brattice line almost to the face. Continuous mining increases the ventilation hazards; there is no margin of time, and very limited space.

ONE of the direct results of the increasing number of oil wells drilled to greater depths has been the development of new types of bits. These bits should resist the abrasive action of drilling and give the greatest footage before bit changes become necessary on account of dulled cutting edges. The loss of drilling time caused by changing bits becomes more important as the well becomes deeper, because the whole drill pipe must be unscrewed to make; each change. Under ordinary conditions the change takes: 2 1/2 hr. for round trip at 4000 ft., 3 hr. for round trip at 5000 ft., 4 hr. for round trip at 6000 ft., 5 hr. for round trip at 7000 ft. In other words, the time to change a stand of drill pipe (90 ft.) varies from 1 2/3 min. at 4000 ft. to 23 min. at 8000 ft. In general, the formation in the deeper zones is harder and dulls bits more quickly than the formations nearer the surface, therefore even a small increase of hole drilled per bit will decrease costs and increase speed of drilling.

Multiple seam mining has been studied and writ- ten about extensively in the past and in the latest review of the subject in 1956 David Stemple covered it exhaustively. The present discussion has to do with only one phase of the problem-"The effects on upper seams when the lower seams have been mined first." The study presented here is based on observations made in mining operations in southern West Virginia and adjoining areas of Virginia and Kentucky during the past 43 years. These observations are largely confined to the Pocahontas coalfields of southern West Virginia which have, since 1883, produced well over one billion tons of coal from an area of about 300 sq miles and where multiple seam mining has been active, or is now active, at more than 40 operations. The observations and conclusions as to the effects on upper seams when lower seams have previously been mined are therefore related only to the local coalfields in the area of the three states named but I believe that they can be applied generally to other coalfields.

The word asbestos is a broad term that has been accepted and applied to a number of fibrous mineral silicates found in nature. They are incombustible and can be separated by mechanical means into fibers of various lengths and thicknesses, but differ in chemical composition and other properties. It is generally recognized that there are six varieties of asbestos; the finely fibrous form of serpentine known as chrysotile, and five minerals of the amphibole group, i.e., amosite (not fully recognized as a mineral species name but accepted in asbestos terminology), anthophyllite, crocidolite, tremolite and actinolite. (Figs 1-4.) Physical and Other Properties The structures of asbestos fibers have been studied intensely in recent years. X-ray diffraction patterns 1 to 15 have been used as a means of identification and classification. The amphibole group structures have been fairly well established while the serpentine group has been the subject of many investigations during the past six years. Low-angle X-ray scattering techniques5 have shown that the chrysotile fibrils are "hexagonally close packed" and parallel to each other, having cross-sectional diameters varying from 180Å* units to 300Å units, while the amphibole fibers are many times larger in cross section. The electron micrographs of chrysotile asbestos (Figs 1-4) have also indicated that the fibrils might be in the form of a hollow tube. This point has been the subject of considerable controversy by a number of investigators.7 to 16 Density measurements17 made on a sample of high quality Arizona fiber did not indicate that the fiber had a hollow tube structure; however, the so-called "sheet structure" of the fibril could be distorted in such a way that it gives the appearance of a hollow tube in the electron microscope. It is of interest to quote one investigator, F. L. Pundsack,17 in this connection: Although the empirical composition of chrysotile is 3MgO.2SiO2.2H20, the true unit cell[#] composition is best represented as Mg12(OH)16Si8O20. This cell has dimensions of a= 5.3Å, b = 9.2 Å, and c = 14.6 Å where the "a" direction is the fiber axis. The calculated density of this unit is 2.56 g/cc, a value in close agreement with experimentally determined density values for chrysotile. In both Canada and the United States, a company making a public offering of securities must comply with regulations which have been passed by Federal, State and/or Provincial Legislatures. These regulations usually require the distribution of an acceptable prospectus which provides essential background information about the issuer, the project and the share offering. when the public offering has been accepted, the unlisted company may then seek a listing of its shares for trading on a Stock Exchange. Once listed, the company will be subject to rules of the Stock Exchange. This paper will deal with the specific information required for inclusion into a prospectus being submitted for a resource company and particularly those parts of concern to mining engineers and geologists.

The writer has dealt with the effect of various methods of melting copper upon the gas content of the metal.' The copper referred to in his earlier paper was melted in the foundry both in the oil furnace and the electric furnace. As the metal did not measure up to conductivity standard, the term "casting copper" was applied to the material in the title of the paper. It was thought that some information in regard to the gases in a sample of overpoled copper might also be of interest, and through the courtesy of C. R. Stevens, superintendent of the copper mill of the West-inghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co., such a sample was obtained. The metal was chill-cast in the form of an ingot about 7 in. long, 2 1/2 in. deep (from the base to the raised surface of the ingot) and from 1 3/8 to 1 7/8 in. wide. A photograph of part of the ingot is shown in Fig. 1. The effect of over-poling on the surface of the metal is here quite clearly shown.

Report of Secretary TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen -I herewith present a report of some of the more important activities of the Institute for the year of 1922. The outstanding feature of the year is the optimism felt by our members despite the continued depression in the mining industry. January 1, 1921, found many of our members out of employment or drifting into other industries to tide them over the depression; but almost universally the feeling has been that this was but a temporary condition and that sooner or later the necessary production of raw materials would enable these members to return to their former activities and renew their participation in Institute affairs As the year passed conditions improved and, before it ended, many had found employment in their previous occupations. Bearing in mind that this depression has been very real, we have reason to be well satisfied with the work that the Institute has been able to do The loss of members through inability to pay dues has been large, and income has been correspondingly reduced, but it proved to be materially in excess of that anticipated early in the year, so that a substantial and unanticipated balance was carried forward toward the activities of 1923.

On the basis of liquidus measurements in the system COO-Mg0-Al2O3-Sio, and previously published data, diagrams have been constructed at 5 pct Al2O3, intervals from 5 to 35 pct Al2O3,. Liquidus temperatures and primary phase fields are shown. The optimum composition of a blast furnace slag for a given alumina content is indicated. At the optimum point, ordinary slags will be entirely liquid and will have maximum desulphurization potential and minimum viscosity. The relation of optimum composition of slags to the "plateau region" of the liquidus surface, and the application of these data on synthetic quaternary slags to actual slag compositions are discussed. Index of refraction of glasses is given as well as composition, temperature, and phase data for each mixture. THE usual blast furnace slag, as a first approximation, can be considered a mixture of the four oxides, CaO, MgO, Also,, and SiO,. Systematic, extensive data for the quaternary system, CaO-MgO-A1,0,-SiO, is therefore required for the understanding of the properties of such a slag as a function of composition and temperature. With sufficient data, it should be possible to fix unequivocably the relative amounts of lime, magnesia, and silica required for a given alumina content to result in a slag composition having optimum properties. Other constituents, such as FeO, MnO, Ti02, and S, have an effect on the properties of a slag, but as long as they are present in small and approximately constant amounts they produce only a second-order effect superimposed upon the major changes in properties of slags determined by the relative amounts of the four major components. Viscosity and desulphurization data have been reported for mixtures approaching blast furnace slags in composition, but systematic liquidus data have not been obtained. Inasmuch as a slag must be all liquid in order to be most effective as well as practicable, clearly the temperature above which a mixture is all liquid (liquidus temperature) is a type of data needed. Such data have been obtained through the study of 446 compositions and are pre- sented in this paper along with a discussion of their bearing on the optimum composition of blast furnace slags. For an orderly presentation of the data, the quaternary system is viewed as a tetrahedron with one component at each apex. Fig. 1 shows a tetrahedron representing the system Ca0-Mg0-A1,0,-Si0,. THE International First-Aid and Mine-Rescue con-test, under the auspices of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, was held at Butte, Mont., on Aug. 20, 21 and 22. As usual, the first-aid elimination contests were held the first day, the finals the second, and the mine-rescue contest the third. While the number of teams entered was not as great as at some previous contests held nearer the coal-mining districts of the East, the atten-dance was much larger than usual, due to the great interest in first aid, rescue work, and accident preven-tion that has been created by the effective support and constructive policy of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. toward them. The winner of the first-aid contest was the Great Falls Zinc Mill team of the Anaconda company, of which Fred Erickson is captain. Second place went to the Baton Rouge team of the Standard Oil Co. of Louisi-ana, and third to the Great Falls Furnace Refinery team of the Anaconda company.

THE binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of compre-hensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean1 and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening ,was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-Antimony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Tin These three systems are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony. The temperature of the solidus floor is lowered appreciably by the presence of bismuth, cutting down the range of heat treatment. Copper, on the other hand, due to compound formation, increases the apparent solubility of antimony. The excess antimony is tied up with the copper finally and so is not available for dispersion hardening. The net result of addition of small amounts of copper is to shift the dispersion hardening peak of the

Introduction In Europe, longwall mining accounts for over 95% of coal produced from deep mines, whereas in the U.S.A., longwall accounts for less than 5% of deep mine coal production. There are many reasons for the difference, but in general: a. U.S. mine operators have invested heavily in continuous mining or conventional equipment which continues to produce acceptable results; b. There 1s a reluctance to change from, a familiar (and proven) mining method to an unfamiliar one, despite promises of huge production increases,; c. Multi-seam mining in Europe has made longwall the only really viable mining method, whereas In the U.S.A. multi-seam mining (particularly in "below-drainage" mines), is relatively rare; d. Although some spectacular results have been achieved by longwall in the U.S.A.(I), the general performance of longwall in this country has not been good enough to generate much enthusiasm for its wide application; e. The much higher level of investment in face equipment required for longwall when compared to alternative methods (approximately $7.5 million for a medium seam longwall installation and $1 million to $1.5 million for a continuous miner section). However, declining productivity, national energy requirements and safety legislation are creating a situation in which longwall as a viable mining method is being examined more closely and in more places than hitherto. This paper, therefore, attempts to identify some of the principal criteria needing examination in any assessment of the feasibility of longwall application, the limitations of information for those criteria in the decision making process and the need for further research and development to assist the mine operators make the decisions.

A simple method of obtaining multistage batch separations by crystallization was described recently. Known as zone-refining, it comprises passing short molten zones through a long solid charge. This technique can now be used on a continuous basis by means of the zone-void method described in this paper. Feed enters, at an intermediate point, a column down which molten zones travel, and waste and product leave at the ends. Materials move in the column through the agency of voids, which are introduced at the ends and travel toward the feed inlet. The voids and molten zones are moved by external heaters in a simple manner, and the principle of reflux is utilized. ANEW method of obtaining multistage separations by crystallization was described recently.' Named zone-refinina.,-, the method comwrises slowly passing a series of molten zones through a long solid charge. Solute becomes concentrated at one or the other end of the charge, depending on whether it raises or lowers the freezing point of the solvent. The separation increases with the number, P, of zone-passes, approaching a limit as P approaches infinity. Zone-refining has been highly effective in purifying germanium and other substances.2,3 and new applications are steadily increasing. Zone-refining is a batch method and as such it has certain limitations inherent in batch operation. If it could be made continuous, its scope and utility would be greatly broadened. This end has been achieved by the zone-void method described in this paper. In the zone-void method feed is introduced continuously at an intermediate point in a column down which molten zones travel, while impure waste and purified product leave at the ends. Both the flows of feed, waste and product, and also the travels of the zones, are actuated by external moving heaters in a simple manner; and the system utilizes the principle of reflux. The method provides, in the field of crystallization, the counterpart of the continuous fractiona-tion column in the field of distillation. The following will be discussed: apparatus and mode of operation, fundamental nature of the separation, design theory, and practical considerations. The method will be described in terms of a binary solute-solvent system in which the solute is an impurity to be removed and the solvent is the desired product. The distribution coefficient, k, defined as the ratio of solute concentration in the solid freezing out of a molten zone to that in the liquid in the zone, is assumed to be constant and less than one. The process is equally effective for k's greater than one and for ternary or higher order systems. Method and Apparatus The essential features of a continuous zone-refining process are represented in highly generalized form in Fig. 1. A series of molten zones, produced by moving heaters, travels slowly down the column or charge (to the left in Fig. 1). If there were no flows of feed, waste, or product, the process would simply be batch zone-refining, the action of the molten zones being to sweep solute down the column, solvent up the column. For the process to be con- tinuous, with stripping and enriching sections in the column, feed must enter, and waste and product must leave, as indicated. The zone-void process accomplishes both objectives, namely, the indicated movements of zones and the indicated flows of material. Zones are moved by moving heaters, just as in batch zone-refining. Materials are made to flow by creating voids at the waste and product exits and causing these voids to move to the feed inlet. Since there must be a net flow of material from the feed inlet to each of the outlets, the indicated movements of voids are in the desired directions, because movement of a void in a given direction corresponds to flow of material in an opposite direction. In order to produce the desired movements of voids, the column is folded into two vertical sections having the feed inlet in common at their upper ends. Voids are displaced upward by the liquids in the molten zones and their travel is actuated by the motions of the zones. Voids travel with the zones in the enriching section and move continuously. Voids travel opposite to the zones in the stripping section and move intermittently. Creation and travel of voids will now be examined in detail. The enriching section of a column in operation, with its void generator, is shown in Fig. 2. The column section is a vertical tube around which a series of closely fitting, regularly spaced heaters travel slowly upward. Each heater produces a molten region, the temperatures of the heaters and the cooling between heaters being controlled so as to maintain the molten zones approximately constant in size. A void is normally present atop the molten zone in each heater. As the heater rises, it continuously melts solid above it, which drips through the void into the molten zone and continuously freezes out solid below it, of concentration k times that of the liquid in the zone. When a molten zone and void reach the feed inlet, which is kept molten, the void is displaced by an equal volume of feed liquid. Generation of voids of controlled size in the enriching section is shown in Fig. 3. The void generator is a tube of small cross-section, provided with lateral heat-conducting fins which sense the position of the heater. Liquid can escape only when the entire outlet tube is within the heater. If any part of the outlet tube is outside the heater, liquid cannot escape,

IN 1926 I had occasion to make numerous measure-ments with a Pitot tube. The differential gage was mounted in a box, and since the work entailed setting upon girders, staging, and flues of various shapes and slopes, much time was generally expended in getting the box blocked into the level position. This inconvenience was so considerable that I devised the gage stand shown in the accompanying illustration. The gage is bolted to the board seat, the bolt per-mitting unlimited adjustment in the plane of the paper. The seat, carrying the gage, revolves on trunnions, per-mitting unlimited adjustment in a second plane, per-pendicular to the first. Consequently, the stand may be stood up, hung by one corner, leaned against some-thing or simply laid down, and the gage levelled from any position. On uneven surfaces, where the stand naturally rests on only three of its legs, it may be swung in the manner peculiar to the tripod, bringing the center of gravity within the triangle formed by the legs, thereby providing a firm set-up. Rubber stoppers under compression were found to give sufficient friction to hold the seat in the desired position.
