A test is described in which the wellubility of porous rock is measured as a function of the displacement properties of the rock-water-oil system. Four displacemet operations are carried out: (I) sponlaneous displaceti?ent of water by oil, (2) forced displacement of water by oil oil in the same system using a centrifuging procetllrre, (3) spontaneous displacement of oil by water. and (4) forced displacment of oil by water. Ratios of the spontaneous displacement volumes to the total displucenlent volumes are used as wettability indicates. Cores having clean mineral surfaces (strongly preferentially water-wet) show displacement-by-waler ratios approaching 1.00 and displacement-by-oil ratios of zero. INTRODUCTTON Most investigators who have reported on the wettahility of porous rock have described such rock as prcferentially water-wet or preferentially oil-wet. In some cases a third classification, neutral wettability. has been used. The efficiency of water floods in each of these wettability groups has been described in numerous publications. Several methods for characterizing porous rock wet tability more precisely have been reported,' " but it appears that because of one weakness or another. none of these has been generally accepted. Early in our studies in this field, it was found that the displacement efficiency of oil by water in a particular porous rock having a strong preference for water was quite different from that in a similar rock having only a moderate preference for water. Thus, there appeared to be a need for a practical, reasonably precise wet tability test. one which could classify porous rocks into 10 to 20 different groups rather than the two or three broad groups listed above. The test developed to meet this need is described in this paper. Also, changes in wettability, as indicated hy this test, resulting from various core handling procedures are discussed. Finally, data showing the corrclation of wettability with waterflood oil recovery for two different types of cores are presented and discussed. Some confusion has resulted from the failure of certain writers to define clearly some of the wettability terms they have used. Accordingly, the following commcnts concerning definitions are offered. The wc t ta-hility of a solid surface is the relative preference of that surface to be covered by one of the fluids under consideration. It is felt that this is the generally accepted definition. The fluids being considered must bc specified (or understood) before the term wettability has any significance. In the work reported here these fluids are water (3 per cent brine) and oil (kerosene). The term preferential wettability is sometimes used, but we think that the word preferential is redundant here and should not be used. Tn line with the definitions of Jennings', a preferentially oil-wet solid surface is regarded as a surface which will show an oil advancing contact angle less than 90" (measured through the oil) in the water-oil-solid system. Oil will spontaneously displace water, if both are at the same pressure, from such a surface. A preferentially water-wet surface is analogous. This is consistent with the wettability definition above. As Jennings has said, frequently the term oil-wet is used to mean the same thing as preferentially oil-wet. However, oil-wet also has been used occasionally referring to an oil-covered surface when the availability of water was limited. To avoid confusion from this source, we do not use the terms oil-wet and water-wet. One of the greatest improvements in drilling equipment has been the development of hard facing metals which are welded by electricity or by acetylene to form a facing which protects the steel of the bit from abrasive wear. The main desirable characteristics of hard facing metals are resistance to abrasive wear, resistance to shock and perfect bond with underlying metal. Resistance to abrasion offered by various metals shows many anomalies. Compounds containing carbon, silicon and boron are the most important hard substances. Carbon, as diamond, silicon carbide and especially the carbides of iron, chromium and tungsten are the outstanding hard products in common use. Tungsten carbide is probably the most commonly used. It is made in the electric furnace and it is important to get the right amount of carbon and the correct crystalline structure in order to obtain the greatest hardness and greatest resistance to abrasion. It may be obtained in three main divisions: wrought, cast and casehardened. Insert hard metals are common. The method of application varies, but it is generally welded to the bit, placed in channels or in drilled holes and covered with a hard surfacing metal. Robinson' has given a very complete article on the use of inserts. Gregg and Küttner2 has discussed the metallography of tungsten carbides and given a good bibliography of the subject,. The time and expense of large-scale testing, together with variations in results, led to the development of a laboratory testing machine for determining the abrasive-resisting qualities of different metals. In the previous paper, the writer indicated that the arc welding of cast iron is practicable only when barium carbonate is used to retard the fusion of electrodes. Later, he tested the effects of 48 other elements, to discover the cause of their retarding action. Wrought-iron bars 33 cm. long and 0.53 cm. dia. were used as electrodes. Trace Phosphorus.............................................. 0.047 Sulfur................................................... 0.008 Each of the bars was wound with a twine of asbestos (1 mm. dia., weighing 0.5 g.) and then was coated with a mixture of equal quantities of graphite and carborundum and one of the compounds listed in the second column of Table 2. The method used in coating was as follows: The mixtures were reduced to paste by adding to them a solution of water glass (1:3); they were next put in a glass tube of 8 mm. inner diameter, with funnel-shaped mouth (the same tube shown in the previous paper); then the bars were passed through the tube so that the mixtures were coated on them. The glass tube was used only as a means of making the diameters of all coated bars exactly 8 millimeters. The cast iron was deposited on the steel plates by connecting the electrodes first to the positive and then to the negative pole of the generator. The figures representing the time, voltage, amperes and energy required to melt each electrode are given in Table 2. They are arranged in the order of the atomic weights of the elements contained in the coatings. IN order not to deviate from the proposed order both in speaking of melts and of things necessary for guns, I shall tell you at present the method by which iron balls are made. This is surely a very fine invention and a horrible one because of its very powerful effect. It is a new thing in warfare,* because (as far as I know) iron balls shot from guns were never seen in, Italy before those that King Charles of France brought here for the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples against King Ferrandino in the year 1495. Now, although I spoke to you briefly of these when I told you above of the purification of iron, it seems to me necessary to show you again in more detail here how they are made. Therefore I tell you that in addition to iron, bellows, blast furnace, and charcoal, it is necessary to have the moulds, without which they could not be cast. At first, when this work was begun in Italy, it was customary to make these moulds of bronze so as not to be obliged always to be making them of clay. Now the present masters cast the moulds of the same iron in order to save expense. Although I am aware that you should already know how to make these from the methods of moulding taught you before, still I shall tell you the method that is followed in making these, because in the practice of every particular thing there is some divergence from the general procedure. For these balls, first make a ball of wood or of clay, or have one made of lead or iron, round and of exactly the dimensions that you wish. This is if you wish to make only one in your mould; otherwise take as many as you wish it to contain. Bury half of this, or these, in a board or in clay and, having greased them with oil or lard, make a mould over them of plaster of Paris, or of clay if you have no plaster, exactly as you wish it to be in iron or bronze. A laboratory experimental research project was conducted to evaluate the use of chlorine for the oxidative destruction of residual ammonia that may remain in ground water after in-situ uranium solution mining operations. The work tested the idea of injecting high strength calcium hypochlorite solution into the mining zone to convert ammonia to nitrogen gas as a final cleanup process for ammonia removal from the ground water system. This paper details ammonia removal efficiency as a function of chlorine dose, reactant, and product material balances, and how the concept may be used as a final ground water restoration process.

UNDERGRADUATES in mining engineering may be prepared for work by giving them sound instruction in the courses generally considered essential to the profession. The industry is not deeply concerned about the details of those courses. The average man in the coal industry does not wish to insist upon a rigid program. Therefore, he differs little from those in the teaching profession who evidently are not unanimous in their opinions, or all college catalogs would be alike. For the good of the profession, it is just as well that there should be differences in regard to details. It appears that students graduating in mining engineering from the accredited institutions receive similar instruction. It is taken for granted that the graduate will have a good understanding of English, mathematics, mechanics, electricity, chemistry, physics, geology, and surveying, in addition to his major courses in mining. Somewhat belatedly, industry hopes he will have had at least an introduction to the subject of labor relations, the importance of which is only too clear at present. The coal industry expects, of course, that students in mining engineering will be taught the strictly mining subjects by men who have had practical experience in the mines and who keep themselves well informed in regard to current methods. While the undergraduate is subject to the control of members of the teaching profession, industry expects him to be trained in certain ways that are not a part of his textbooks, but can be made an inseparable part of his development by the skillful supervision of his teachers. Of the desired characteristics, dependability is of the utmost importance. Probably most employers would overlook certain short-comings if the young graduate demonstrated that he was thoroughly dependable. If he always appeared at the right place at the right time with the proper equipment, he would soon be well established as a welcome member of his organization. The graduate who gets a reputation for being undependable will have little opportunity for advancement. Closely allied to dependability is loyalty. Athletic teams and social groups in college tend to develop loyalty which may well be carried over into industry. This does not mean that the graduate has to be satisfied with customary practices. The average manager is glad to see the graduate make constructive criticism as long as he demonstrates his loyalty at the same time. It is important that his loyalty keeps him alert arid ready to take helpful action for the benefit of his organization, and especially to stand with it during times of stress. With or without an introduction to labor relations in college, the graduate is expected to develop ability in this most important field. Beginning with himself, he will find it essential to deal agreeably with his immediate associates. Getting along in friendly fashion with his own small group will be a great help as his responsibilities increase and he is required to deal with larger numbers of persons. On a higher scale, his interest in his community may grow at the same time by voluntary work in any one of a great number of useful activities. Industry expects the graduate engineer to be a mature man at the time he gets his first job. Supposing that he has better than average intelligence, industry expects him to continue to grow intellectually and to fit himself for responsible jobs when they are offered to him. For this reason, employers are apt to look over his college record to see what he did that would indicate his fitness for leadership. There is interest in knowing what he did beyond the requirements. As evidence of his mental growth, it is expected that the graduate will do independent thinking; that he will not take too much for granted. When he reads a report, he should develop the ability to see whether the subject is new or whether it is just a description of an old method that has been superseded by something better. For the same reason, the graduate should be able to accept conditions that have been arrived at by sound experience rather than cling to something else that seems better in theory. In this connection, it may be remarked that the ability to operate successfully a personal budget will be noteworthy, as it may be assumed that a man who knows how to conduct his own affairs will be prepared to assume the larger responsibilities of industry. Membership in AIME will indicate to the employer that the graduate is interested in the mining industry as a whole. Therefore, it is good evidence of something more than a local outlook. Quite apart from college training and mental ability, the newly employed graduate will be expected to be willing to do hard manual labor for a time. This will give him an understanding of the actual conditions of work done by those he supervises later. He will gain their confidence and be able to see that the work is carried on in a safe and efficient manner. Part of this experience may be acquired in his summer vacations during his undergraduate career. Such work would make a favorable impression on a prospective employer, especially if the graduate showed a willingness to continue it until he was prepared for something better. To summarize, the man in authority in the coal industry will not quarrel with the professor of mining engineering over details of curriculum. He will be pleased if the school sends him graduates who possess a good foundation in the courses studied, and who may be depended upon to do their work faithfully and intelligently. Such men will be ready when the time comes to assume their places as leaders of an essential industry.

WITHIN recent years people have begun to realize the importance and significance of the mining and allied industries. The leading part the engineer plays in civilization is becoming recognized. However accurate quantitative knowledge of the industrial importance of mining is still seldom possessed except by those close to this business. It is true that there are a few who go to the extreme and represent the whole progress of civilization as a reflection of man's gradual mastery of mineral utilization, but on the whole, the magnitude of the-industry is underestimated. In this paper I shall call attention briefly to the importance of mining in the United States, in Canada, and in the world. Ordinarily, the annual primary mineral production of the United States is about $5,500,000,000. The average for the last 5 years has been a little over that, but last year, sadly enough, it was less than 31/4 billion. Just now, we are on the decline, and have been for the last two years. In Canada, the 5-year average was about $268,000,000, and last year it was 227 million. Due in part to gold mines (in 1930, for the first time, Canada's gold production exceeded that of the United States), the Canadian average is holding up better than ours. Average world mineral production over the last -5 years has been estimated at about $12,000,000;000 whereas in 1931 it was less than than 8 billion.

THE wage rates and working conditions in the anthracite. region of Pennsylvania have been governed for nearly 20 years by the award of the Anthracite Coal Strike Commission, appointed Oct. 16, 1902, by President Roosevelt. The report of this com-mission, made in March, 1903, was accepted and, with eight modifications made at various dates, has had .almost the force of law, and has kept this great indus-trial region free from strikes for almost a generation. In 1920, President Wilson appointed an Anthracite Coal Commission, and its report, accepted Aug. 30, 1920, governed wage conditions to April 1, 1922. Actually, the agreements have been for terms of two to four years, and lately, in 1916 and 1920, the employ-ees have continued at work pending the negotiation of new agreements which were made retroactive, and which have all been modifications of the original 1903 award. With the expiration, April 1, 1922, of the 1920 award approaching, Mr. Lewis, president, of the United Mine Workers of America, addressed a letter, on Feb. 20, to the operators, suggesting a meeting on March 15; this date was accepted by the latter, with the notation that the time was short. At the meeting, the Mine Workers presented 19 demands, and advised that if a satisfactory agreement was not reached by April 1.a suspension of mining would occur, contrary to the practice since 1916 of continuing work with a retro-active adjustment.

The amplitudes and frequencies of vibratiolls of a four-story stucco building were measured by specially developed electrocapacitive seismometers. Records were made on three floor levels with as many as 10 seismometers recording simultancously. Sources of vibration were: (1) an electric motor with unbalanced pulley, maximum speed 1800 r.p.m., maximum centrifugal force 90 lb., (2) truck traffic (both solid and pneumatic tires) moving over inequalities in the street in front of the house, (3) falling weights dropped on the street pavement from different heights, (4) miscellaneous sources, including a man jumping on the floor of the house and slamming doors. Tests were made to determine the natural frequencies of floor and wall panels by varying the speed of the unbalanced motor and by exciting the panels with a single impulse. The vibrations recorded were compared to records of vibrations from quarry blasts and it was observed that the vibrations from truck traffic were comparable to those recorded from quarry blasts and in no instance was there any damage to the building. As the tests were all of a negative character as far as damage was concerned, no index of destruction is formulated. Instead, the records are presented simply as vibration measurements obtained in an ordinary house under typical conditions.

THE use of oxygen in electric furnaces is relatively old, and the practice has been employed by several steelmakers prior to the recent impetus given generally to the use of oxygen in steelmaking. This application has been described recently in several publications,1 and a number of patents relating to the application of oxygen in electric furnaces have been issued.2 An effort is made in this paper to assemble recent information relating to the use of oxygen in electric furnaces and to present this material from a practical viewpoint, to an extent consistent with the withholding of certain operating data which manufacturers consider to be confidential. The use of oxygen has been extended during the past months in a number of additional steel companies by incorporating oxygen practice into regular production and by much increased experimentation. Available records show that oxygen is used more or less regularly at present in 18 shops, of which six utilize the oxygen for production and the others for experimen¬tation. The number of furnaces per shop using oxygen varies from one to six. Many types of electric-furnace steel have been prepared with the assistance of pure oxygen, including low-carbon and medium-carbon killed steels, low-carbon rimming steel and low-carbon and medium-carbon stainless and alloy steels. Oxygen has been used in furnaces of all sizes up to 90 tons capacity for accelerating charge meltdown and for reduction of carbon.

THE published work of Lacombe and Beaujard' has demonstrated the interesting application of etch figures to the determination of crystal orientations in aluminum by a purely micrographic method. The geometry of these figures leaves no ambiguity and the method has the added advantage of being applicable to very small crystal units. These authors applied the technique to the study of high purity aluminum, and it has now been adopted buy Heren-guel and his collaborators to various researches on commercial aluminum, containing up to 1 pct Fe and Si. The magnetic reflux classifier, which utilizes the combined effects of magnetic fields and a hindered settling classifier, is a new tool for determining the quantity and quality of middlings in fine-sized magnetite concentrates.
