Common practice in the Mid-Continent until recently was to prolong the natural flow of oil wells as long as possible by agitation, and then swab for a short period until the well was put on the pump. Comparatively recently the gas-lift has superseded the swabbing and agitating period and in some cases encroached on the natural flowing life, particularly where it was evident that the potential oil capacity of the well was greater than the gas supply, or lifting medium. The majority of wells are finished with either 6¼, 65/8 or 8¼-in. casing and connected to a separator through a flow line which is usually 65/8 in. The flow line is generally designed to eliminate sharp turns and has reduced the gas-oil ratio and therefore increased the efficiency in a good many instances. Until recently all wells were allowed to flow without restriction against the possible trap pressure until it was deemed advisable to put them on gas-lift. This resulted in a fairly efficient flow during the early life of the well if the well was rather large but was usually inefficient in small wells and in the later flowing life of large wells, on account of the large area in the casing and therefore excessive slippage. Recently, considerable effort has been made to increase the efficiency of small flowing wells by running tubing to eliminate as much slippage as possible. With large wells there is a considerable trend toward back-pressuring, or beaning to find out whether it is possible to reduce the gas-oil ratios and increase the flowing life. The greater number of fields that have been back-pressured have been produced in that manner through necessity, either to restrict production for proration purposes or, in fields producing by hydraulic pressure, to reduce water encroaching. The recent Cromwell sand development in Little River is an example where both back-pressuring by means of high-pressure traps and beans and flowing through tubing were used to conserve gas, reduce the high gas-oil ratio and prolong the flowing life. MANY factors enter into the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel of high quality. Perhaps the two most important are temperature and the iron oxide content of the metal. If we can control these two factors we can essentially control basic open-hearth practice. SOURCE AND EFFECT OF IRON OXIDE Earlier investigators, especially Herty and his associates, have shown that iron oxide is introduced into the open-hearth furnace in four ways:1 1. - By oxidation of the scrap by furnace gases. 2. By decomposition of the limestone. 3. By oxidation of the iron oxide in the slag by furnace gases. 4. By direct addition of iron ore to the charge. We also know that the speed of operation of an open-hearth furnace depends, for a given charge and given combustion conditions, on the rate at which iron oxide will diffuse from the slag into the metal. The rate of diffusion depends upon a number of variables, such as iron oxide content of the slag, slag viscosity, etc., which also depend upon the amount of iron oxide in the metal, amount of carbon present, temperature, and so forth. For a given carbon and a given temperature, the iron oxide content of the metal is in proportion to the iron oxide content of the slag. This fact can be easily verified by analysis of slag samples taken as described by Herty.2 It is preferable to take these samples just before deoxidation. In killing the steel samples with aluminum it is desirable to use aluminum rod of 99 per cent purity; ordinary commercial aluminum rod with a purity of approximately 92 per cent is not satisfactory. In drilling these samples it is also essential to take the largest amount of drillings possible. This gives more accurate results because it eliminates spotty segregation of Al203.

Haulage in tunneling operations generally has been done with electric locomotives. As a rule, on short hauls the source of electricity is a storage battery mounted on the locomotive, which, of course, must be removed and recharged periodically. Where the distance from the recharging point to the tunnel face is very long, and where loads are heavy, trolley-driven locomotives are used. Diesel engines have been used in mining and tunneling operations in Europe for a number of years. The recent reports of studies in Belgium1 and by the Bureau of Mines in this country2-4 have indicated the potentialities of this form of power for haulage, mucking, bulldozing and many other underground operations. The hazards attending the use of Diesel engines in more or less closed spaces have long been known. The exhaust constituents that may create a harmful or objectionable environment are carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, carbon dioxide, aldehydes and smoke. Lack of precise information regarding the concentration of these gases and the ventilation requirements to reduce them to safe levels has to some extent suppressed their general acceptance in tunneling and mining work. Not until the work of the Bureau of Mines referred to above, and certain experience gained in the construction of the Delaware Aqueduct, ‡ has there been available the requisite information regarding the conditions under which their use may be permitted. This paper concerns itself with the successful operation of Diesel engines underground in the construction of certain parts of the Delaware Aqueduct, and describes the conditions under which Diesel engines have been found to operate with a minimum production of noxious gases. The test data reported were obtained during the operation of Diesel engines over a period of two years.* Studies by the New York State Department or Labor Exhaustive tests were made by the Division of Industrial Hygiene, of the composition of the exhaust gases given off by a Diesel engine mounted on a test block. R301 is a clad aluminum alloy, composed of a core of a duralumin-type alloy clad with a magnesium silicide alloy. It differs from other well-known clad alloys in that the cladding and the core respond to the same heat-treatments, and therefore the cladding contributes appreciably to the mechanical properties of the material. In Table 1 are reported the compositions of the core and cladding alloy for the material used for the experiments. [ ] In clad aluminum alloys where the core contains copper and the cladding does not, at elevated temperatures the copper tends to diffuse from the core through the cladding. This fact is well known and many investigations have been conducted to determine the features of this diffusion.1-7 Most of those investigations cover materials clad with pure aluminum; the present investigation covers a material clad with an alloy. Since the cladding thickness on R301 varies with the gauge, as shown in Table 2, several gauges were investigated. [ ] MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE The material used was sheet of the following gauges: 0.025, 0.040, 0.064, 0.102, 0.170. Cut in pieces approximately 3 by 5 in., it was in the cold-rolled state and was soaked for increasing times at the following temperatures: 910°F., 940°F., 970°F. A Lindberg cyclone furnace was used for the experiments. The procedure was as follows: The furnace was started empty with controlling pyrometer set at the determined temperature. After the furnace had reached that temperature, it was run for some 20 to 30 min. empty, in order to allow the temperature inside to become stabilized. Then the first samples were introduced. A load thermocouple, with recording pyrometer, was connected with the sample of the heaviest gauge. About 10 min. was required for the material to reach temperature and the soaking time was counted from that point. After 200 min. soaking, the second group of samples was introduced without stopping the furnace. After 200 min. more, the third group of samples was introduced, and so on, until the last sample had been introduced. Every time the furnace was opened and new samples were added, a drop of temperature was registered by the thermocouple connected with the material

Transition in the underground coal industry, begun with the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, should be completed midway in the 1972-80 period. Surprisingly, many of the far reaching effects of this act have been, for the most part, beneficial to the industry from the standpoint of health, safety and basic operating standards. Production has dwindled, but the next few years will see production declines level out. Average declines of approximately 27% have been recorded since passage of the 1969 act, with costs increasing an average of $1.50 per ton throughout the industry. Nationwide averages presently are in the range of 14 tons per man-shift, and by 1980 this may be further reduced to a 10-ton per man-shift average for the industry. But in spite of the many temporary set-backs affecting the industry, the marketing opportunities are clearly visible. Due primarily to the energy squeeze facing the U.S. over the near term, the 'underground coal operator is and will be enjoying unusual leverage in selling his product.

The role of dispersion is described in the wet grinding of ores using tumbling media mills and the flotation of coal, sulfide, and non-sulfide ores. Emphasis is placed on characterizing the effects of dispersion in laboratory tests using engineering models which provide information useful for the improvement and control of existing plant operations. Significant economic gains in the above named operations have been realized using these models as guides for full- scale plant testing.

DURING the past few years, a considerable tonnage of ilmenite has been produced as a byproduct of a monazite dredging operation and stockpiled near Boise, Idaho. This ilmenite has not been marketed because of the long distance from ilmenite-consuming areas and its comparatively low TiO2 content. Production of monazite from the alluvial sand deposits of Idaho is a mar- ginal venture when it is the only marketable product, and it will be necessary to establish a byproduct market before the operation becomes economically stable. Early in 1954, the Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory at Albany, Ore., conducted a series of tests which demonstrated that arc furnace smelting could be utilized to produce commercial quality pig iron and a high titanium content slag from these ilmenites. Additional studies showed that the slag chlorinated readily to produce a satisfactory yield of TiCl4. The investigation was carried out by two research teams. A model for the low-temperature peak, LTP, in fcc metals is presented. In high stacking fault energy metals, e.g., aluminum and nickel, it is proposed that a reversible dislocation glide and climb process might give rise to the observed high relaxation strengths and activation energies equivalent to volume self-diffusion values. In low stacking fault energy metals such as copper, gold, and silver, dislocation climb is energetically unfavorable at T < 0.5 Tm and the relaxation process is therefore mainly one of reversible glide. This model is used to explain the effect of a change in grain size and impurities on the LTP. THE low-temperature grain boundary damping peak, LTP, in spectroscopically pure aluminum,&apos; copper,17&apos; gold,2 nickel,3 and silver4 has recently been the subject of a detailed investigation by our laboratory. The main results are summarized in Table I. An empirical relationship was found between the peak relaxation strength, AE, and the width of the dissociated dislocation, do,* given by: do = µa2/24p? (Ref. 5) [I] where p is the shear modulus, y is the stacking fault energy,6-8 and a is the lattice parameter, Table 11. 4E is plotted against do in Fig. 1. Two regions are apparent: region (a)! which contains all but one of the metals, where AE decreases linearly with increasing do, i.e,, AE 1/do; and region (b), where ?E is approximately independent of do. A similar trend is observed when the ratio Qp/QL is plotted as a function of do, Fig. 2. (Qp and Ql are the activation energies for the peak and for lattice diffusion, respectively). In the past, when Qp and QL were found to be comparable, the relaxation peak was explained in terms of grain boundary sliding.10 The equivalence of Q, and Qb. the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion, prompted the suggestion that it was a consequence of reversible grain boundary migration on an atomic scale." A new model for the LTP, which is based on the experimental relationships in Figs. 1 and 2, is presented. In region (a) it is suggested that stress relaxation occurs through the reversible glide and climb of grain boundary dislocations; in region (b) only reversible glide can take place. The resultant effect on the grain boundary might be sliding or "a bowing out", but, since the total distance moved will be 50A, the atomic movements are considered of primary im- portance. It must be emphasized that this is only a qualitative model, but at the moment it appears the most likely way to explain the widely varying, but re-

P. S. ROLLER,* College Park, Md.-The author introduces the idea of a grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding, and this is stipulated to be 0.70 micron. I wonder where all the particles come from that lie between the resolving power of the microscope and 0.7 micron, which are seen under a microscope in examining a sample of grind? There is also introduced the idea of excess fines; this is all right in itself but the author&apos;s quantitative definition seems to be virtually impossible to justify, and, moreover, is obscure. Just why E, the excess fines, should be defined as the distance between an F line and a [?] line is hard to follow, and just where the distance should be measured does not appear to be stated, as it should be since the F and [?] lines intersect and the distance between will depend upon where that distance is measured. The basis of the presentation is the relation of log weight against log size that was "discovered" by Schuhmann. While this relation is implied to fit, the only evidence that I can see is a slightly irregular line in Fig. I between 2 per cent and 18 per cent by weight and then a precipitous drop at 18 per cent away from any sort of straight line. Some of the conclusions are rather startling. It is stated that E, the excess fines, remains constant for all the comminution products of any particular material, except that it may decrease for some coarse crusher products. No reason is given for this assertion. One would, on the contrary, expect that excess fines, if such a concept is permissible, would generally vary with different conditions instead of being constant. Again, "as much net energy is required to reduce a ton of quartz to particles of the grind-limit diameter (namely, of course, 0.7 micron) by grinding as is required to melt the quartz," This would require many data to prove, but no proof is given; any considera¬tion would reveal the impossibility of such a result. Still further, ore samples "ground to widely different sizes, and with different circulating loads and different size distributions or product, show the same production of new surface area per revolution of the mill, when this grind limit is used." This statement is confuted by ordinary experience, which teaches that grinding efficiency varies generally with the condition of material. For example, the cushioning effect of fines is widely accepted, while the inefficiency of a ball mill when the feed is too coarse is also well known. R. SCHUHMANN, JR.,* Cambridge, Mass.¬Contrary to Mr. Bond&apos;s stand, there is a great deal of miscellaneous experimental evidence that comminution does not stop at around 0.7 micron, nor does it cease consuming energy at that point. Comminution is in fact recognized as an important method of producing colloids.5 Mechanical comminution methods were used by von Weimarn6 to produce colloidal dispersions of a variety of solids, including the minerals chalcocite, galena, hematite, stibnite. THE first record of the discovery of iron ore in Missouri was Marquette&apos;s observation in 1673 of brown iron ore, or limonite, in the Mississippi River bluffs just north of the mouth of Apple Creek in southeastern Perry County. There is no record of any attempt to mine or smelt Missouri iron ores until 1815, when the Ashebran furnace was erected at the Stouts Creek shut-in near Arcadia, Iron County. Some limonite was treated in this furnace, the first iron furnace west of Ohio, but most of the ore was hematite from Shepherd Mountain and adjacent deposits. Eight years later, in 1823, the Perry furnace five miles north of Caledonia, Washington County, was constructed to smelt limonite ore. It

Illinois produced 5 per cent more crude oil in 1934 than in 1933, because there was less curtailment, and. the value of the year&apos;s production at the wells was 35 per cent more than that of the previous year. The average price of Illinois crude oil in 1934 was $1.13 as compared with $0.87 in 1933, an increase of 30 per cent. The quotas of allowable production for Illinois during 1934, as authorized by Oil Administrator Harold L. Ickes, were as follows: January, February, March, 12,000 bbl. per day; April, May, 12,500; June, July, 12,600; August, 12,500; September, October, November, 12,000; December, 11,700. No other restrictions on production were in effect during the year until Oct. 11, when it was found necessary to prorate the fields to 75 per cent, a curtailment of 25 per cent below the quota fixed by the Federal Administrator. On Dec. 1 the curtailment was reduced to 18 per cent and on Dec. 18, to 15 per cent. Of the 26 wells drilled, 10 were oil producers, 8 were in proved fields and 2 were in a new pool in Wabash County, l½ miles south of the nearest production, one was a small gas well on the Stubblefield anticline in Bond County, one was an input well for repressuring in the Colmar-Plymouth field, McDonough County, and 14 were dry holes, mostly scattered wildcat tests.

INTRODUCTION The NIMCIX contactor was developed in the late sixties at the National Institute for Metallurgy in South Africa, for the main purpose of extracting uraniuy from relatively low-grade uranium solutions. &apos; The concept was sufficiently developed by 1974 to permit the operation of a 1500 litre per minute column to treat unclarified urgnium-bearing solution under industrial conditions. The plant operated so successfully that several large-scale units have subsequent18 teen constructed and are operating efficiently. &apos; Total resin consumption figures as210w as 3 per cent per annum have been reported, and the extraction efficiencies of the installations have been exceptionally good. All the solutions treated have been acidic in nature and in every case have been of such a nature as to significantly depress the maximum uranium loading on the resin beads. The chemical constituents of the leach solution fed to the loading column determines the ease with which the soluble uranium can be absorbed by an ion exchange resin. The concentration of competing ions and various resin foulants define the nature of the continuous ion exchange equipment required for efficient extraction performance. The basic NIMCIX concept is retained in these various alternate designs, but batch or continuous elution methods with fully automated or manual control systems may be selected for the different process solution conditions. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE NIMCIX CONTACTOR The NIMCIX ion exchange column is a multi-stage fluidized bed contactor which is designed to permit a counter-current flow of solution and resin in order to maximize extraction efficiency. The flow o resin is periodic, based on the Cloete and Streat 5 principle of reverse flow. The basic operating cycle can be divided into five periods, as illustrated in Figure 1. For the purposes of describing the cycle, the loading column is considered; how- ever, a similar sequence may be applied to the operation of a NIMCIX continuous elution column. S&apos;I&apos;EP 1: During the forward flow period, Solution flows up through the column and fluidizes the resin contained in each stage. The uranium depleted solution overflows the upper flared-section of the column as the tail solution. Step 2: The flow of solution to the column is temporarily stopped and the resin is allowed to Settle onto the plates in the column. STEP 3: During the reverse flow period, a fixed volume of solution is drained from the column to the transfer vessel. This flow causes resin transfer to occur from stage to stage and also out of the bottom stage. At the end of this period, which expires when the low level switch (LS) is actuated, some of the resin is left in the conical section of the column and the pipe interconnecting the column and the vessel. STEP 4: The cone flush period ensures that all the resin left in the cone of the column and the pipe is transferred to the transfer vessel before forward flow commences. STEP 5: The loaded resin in the transfer vessel, which has been isolated from the column, can either be hydraulically transferred to the top of the elution column or eluted in the vessel before being transferred to the top of the loading column. The major advantages associated with the NIMCIX concept are: (i) Simple method of operation (ii) Contactor can readily be scaled up to large diameters. (iii) Because the resin does not pass through pumps or airlifts, and valves cannot be closed on resin beads at any time, the resin losses are exceptionally low. (iv) Operating costs are low. (v) Relatively few valves in the system. (vi) Stable operation is achieved over a wide range of feed rates and concentrations.

IN connection with some of the experiments carried out by the writer on the behavior of gas and oil in a sand reservoir,1 an interesting phenomenon was observed which may throw some new light on the problem of recovery of oil from a natural reservoir. The experiments are intended to show the effect of the surface area of the occluded gas masses, originally present in a reservoir, on the further evolution of gas from the oil and its consequent effect upon the rate of production of oil. The apparatus used in the experimental work is shown in Fig. 1. It consists primarily of a sand reservoir R and a displacement chamber D, which is used to induce small variations in volume. The reservoir and displacement chamber form a unit, and a lowering of the plunger D is equivalent to increasing the volume occupied by the oil and gas in the reservoir. The reservoir was first filled with dead oil and maintained under pressure until it was ascertained that most of the free gas had gone into solution. The volume of free gas present in the reservoir was computed from the coefficient of compressibility of the fluids by means of the dis-placement chamber D, reading to 0.005 c.c. and a special gage J reading to 0.02 lb. per sq. in. The oil was saturated with gas under pressure in reservoir S by circulating the oil for a long period of time through the gear pump B. Subsequently, the saturated oil was circulated through the sand reservoir following the circuit S6, B, S5, R4, the sand reservoir R, R1, R2, F4, F1, back to reservoir S. In the following experiments the sand reservoir R was filled with gas-saturated oil at a pressure of 415 lb. per sq. in. with no free gas present. This was ascertained by. closing off all the outlet valves, and determining the coefficient of compressibility of the system by means of the dis-placement chamber D.

Owing to the traffic jam in collection, and transportation of wastes, the air- and water- pollution in incineration plants, and the sanitary trouble in reclaimed land, it seems that the defective existing system of the solid waste treatment in Japan can not follow the change in quality and the increase in quantity of solid wastes. Under these situations, the objective of the municipal solid waste treatment must be to actualize the pollution-free system for environmental protection and the resources recovery system for resource- and energy- saving. From this point of view, AIST of Japan is now engaged in the research and development of the resources recovery system from municipal solid wastes. This paper reports on the outline of the development of resources recovery technology in Japan, including the AIST&apos;s project on this matter.

IN THE literature on the elimination of metalloids in basic open-hearth practice, there are a great many heats recorded in which excellent data on changes in slag and metal composition during refining are given, but in almost all of these heats either temperature data or weights and analysis of charge are unrecorded and observations on the physical charac- teristics of the slag are almost always lacking. With these points in mind, a test heat was made in which as complete as data possible on all the factors that affect the elimination of metalloids were obtained.

IN spite of the extended use and high state of practical development of the cemented tungsten carbides, the structure of these alloys is still a matter of considerable controversy. The characteristic high rigidity and rupture strength of sintered compacts have been attributed to a continuous skeleton of tungsten carbide grains, formed during the sintering process. This view is based mainly on the work of Dawihl and Hinnuber,1 who reported that a sintered compact of 6 pct Co maintained its shape and some of its strength after the binder was leached out with boiling hydrochloric acid. After leaching, only 0.04 pct Co was reported to remain in the compact. They also showed that the assumed increasing discontinuity of such a skeleton, as the cobalt content is increased, could be made to account for the observed discontinuous increase of the coefficients of thermal expansion, the loss of rigidity, and the impaired cutting performance of alloys of more than 10 pct Co. Contradictory evidence was cited by Sanford and Trent,&apos; who mentioned that a sintered compact was destroyed by reacting the binder with zinc and leaching out the resulting Zn-Co alloy. The skeleton theory also does not account for the observed change of strength of sintered compacts as a function of cobalt content. If the skeleton is responsible for the strength, the latter would be expected to decrease with increasing binder content. Actually, the strength increases and reaches a maximum around 20 pct Co. In addition, tungsten carbide is brittle and undoubtedly very notch sensitive. The highest value found in the literature for the transverse rupture strength of pure tungsten carbide prepared by sintering is 80,000 psi.3 herefore, such a skeleton does not easily account for a rupture-strength value of 300,000 psi and higher, commonly found in sint.ered tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts. In view of the conflicting data present in the literature, experiments were undertaken to determine whether the sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt alloys leads to the formation of a carbide skeleton or whether the densification behavior and the properties of cemented compacts are consistent with a structure of isolated carbide grains in a matrix of binder metal. The specimens were prepared from powders of commercial grade. Tungsten carbide powder ranged in particle size from 0 to 5x10-4 cm. Mixtures of tungsten carbide and cobalt were ball milled in hexane for 48 hr in tungsten carbide lined mills. After milling, the specimens were pressed in a rectangular die (1x1/4x1/4 in.) at 16 tons per sq in. NO pressing lubricant was used. Sintering of the tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts was carried out in a vertical tube furnace equipped with a dilatometer (Fig. I), by means of which the change of length of the powder compacts could be followed from room temperature to 1500°C. An atmosphere of 20 pct H, 80 pct N was maintained inside the furnace. Decarburization of the samples was prevented by the presence of small rings of graphite inside the furnace tube. The temperature of the sample was measured by a platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouple, which also was part of a temperature control system able to maintain a constant temperature within ±100C. Pure tungsten carbide compacts were prepared by sintering the carbide without binder or by evaporating the binder from sintered compacts in vacuum at 2000°C. Since complete densification of these samples was not desired, they were sintered only to 60 or 80 pct of the theoretical density of tungsten carbide. The specimens were prepared for metallographic examination by polishing with diamond powders and etching with a 10 pct solution of alkaline potassium ferricyanide. Cobalt etches light yellow and the carbide gray. The amount of porosity is exaggerated since it is difficult to avoid tearing out carbide particles, especially from incompletely sintered samples. Experimental Observations A number of specific experiments were carried out in order to study some particular aspect of the sintering problem. The details of these experiments, together with their results, are as follows: Electrolytic Leaching: The binder was removed by electrolytic leaching from sintered tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts for the purpose of determining the continuity of the carbide phase. The method used was based on the work of Cohen and coworkers4 on the electrolytic extraction of carbides from annealed steels. If the sample is made the anode, using a 10 pct hydrochloric acid solution as the electrolyte, the binder is dissolved, but the rate of solution of tungsten carbide is negligible. In the foreword by C. K. Leith, Chairman of The Mineral Inquiry, it is pointed out that the ordinary mineral production tables do not show the commercial control, and that some knowledge of the situation is desirable as a background for the consideration of problems involving mineral raw materials. The report consists principally of tables, accompanied by a brief text, giving the production and an analysis of the control, according to nationality, of 18 minerals: aluminum, chromite, copper, iron and steel, lead, manganese ore, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, nitrates, petroleum, potash, silver, sulfur, tin, tungsten, vanadium, and zinc. For the most part, the production figures for 1929 and the latest figures for reserves have been used. When feasible, the control has been shown at the various stages of production; mining, smelting and refining. American capital was dominant in the production of 10 mineral commodities, including six of the most important; British capital, in four instances; while Spanish, German, Chilean or Chinese interests cach led in the control of one. British, French, German, and Dutch capital occupied second place in the control of most of the important minerals. Between two-thirds and three-fourths of the world&apos;s mincral production is controlled by British and American capital.

Much attention has been given in the past few years to methods of increasing the recovery of oil from proven reserves. Numerous laboratories have made investigations to evaluate the possibilities of increased oil recovery by high-pressure injection of dry gas, injection of a propane slug followed by dry gas, solvent flooding. and by the injection at relatively low pressures of gases enriched with ethane and propane. Several years ago, Whorton and Kie-schnick&apos; published the results of laboratory studies on high-pressure gas injection which showed that, in the case of light oils, recoveries could be considerably increased by sweeping the reservoir with dry gas at pressures in excess of 3,000 psig. The increase was attributed by those authors to the vaporization of oil at the invading gas front and viscosity and solubility effects produced at the front by the invading gas. Later, Stone and Crump&apos; presented the results of a series of displacement experiments in which a light under-saturated crude oil was displaced from sand-packed columns with unusually high recoveries when the displacing gas was a rich condensate or a dry gas enriched with ethane or propane. They also conducted similar experiments at higher pressure on heavy undersa tu rated crude oil, although in this case the increase in recovery was not as great as in the case of the light oils. In both cases, viscosity reduction and swelling of the by-passed oil behind the invading gas front were believed to be responsible for the more favorable recovery of the original oil in place. Within the past year, other investigators", &apos; have presented the results of laboratory studies of miscible slug and solvent flooding recovery processes. This paper describes the laboratory methods developed for evaluating benefits to be obtained by enriched gas drive in specific reservoirs, and presents the results of several displacements of crude oils which possess a wide range of physical properties. The displacements were conducted at reservoir conditions of temperature and pressure. The apparatus used in the following experiments consisted of a sand-packed tube which served as the model reservoir, a cylinder of injection fluid, and a mercury pump. The stainless steel tube, 8 ft long and 0.53 in. I- was packed with a graded quartz sand. The high-pressure pump discharged mercury into the bottom of the injection fluid cylinder at a constant rate as low as 1 cc/hr. The average porosity and permeability of the sand column were 34.6 per cent and 3.25 darcies, respectively. In each case the tube was charged by the displacement of salt water by the reservoir oil under consideration. Recently a project was initiated to evaluate oil recovery by enriched gas drive from three oil reservoirs. Samples from a fourth reservoir (in this case high-viscosity oil) were studied with a view to obtaining recovery information of general applicability to low-grade, high-viscosity crudes. The oils from these four reservoirs exhibited a wide range of physical properties, and the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature simulated in the laboratory represented several typical field conditions under which enriched gas drive might be employed. One of the reservoirs selected for laboratory displacement experiments produced an intermediate-gravity crude (29.6" API) by solution gas drive and a weak water drive. A low recovery in the range of 10 to 20 per cent was anticipated. Four displacement experiments were made to determine the effect of injection gas composition and initial gas saturation upon recovery of oil from the laboratory model. Two types of reservoir oil were used in these experiments. In the first run, a desaturated crude with a bubble point of 395 psi was charged to the tube. BECAUSE of the wide use of platinum in industry and research, the physical properties of this metal, including its vapor pressure, have been studied in some detail.&apos; The other members of the palladium-platinum group of metals have not been studied as extensively, and only qualitative information is available on the vapor pressure of palladium. Data given in literature by Vines1 and Brewer2 on the vapor pressure of palladium are based on the qualitative observations by Holborn and Austin3 and Crookes4 on the rate of volatilization of palladium filaments in various atmospheres. The general observation that palladium is the most volatile metal of the palladium-platinum metal group was corroborated by Bell, Love and Normand who studied the separation of isotopes of the platinum-group metals by a mass spectrometric method. We have measured the vapor pressure of palladium using the Knudsen effusion technique. In this work, the effusion vessel was suspended from a quartz-fiber microbalance into an induction furnace, and the amount of vapor effusing from the vessel was determined by direct weighing of the vessel during the measured heating times. This technique has been described in a report from this laboratory." The vapor pressure of palladium was calculated from these measurements using the equation P...... = 17.14 -W- (77m)&apos;u [1] a t where ? is the weight loss in grams of vapor of molecular weight m from a vessel having an orifice of a sq cm, during t sec. The derivation of this equation from kinetic theory has been described in a previous report from this laboratory: as well as in texts discussing the kinetic theory of gases.%" Test Vessel—In the search for a suitable material for the effusion vessel, it was found that tantalum reacted with palladium metal to form intermetallic compounds, and graphite was readily dissolved in palladium metal to form what appeared to be a liquid phase at a temperature several hundred degrees below the melting point of palladium. On cooling, the graphite gathered into spherical balls in the palladium, with crystals extending radially from the center of these balls, some of which were a millimeter or more in diameter. However, palladium metal vapor did not attack the graphite vessel, so graphite could be used where it did not contact condensed palladium. Tungsten did not appear to react with palladium vapor or molten palladium at its melting point, but it was not convenient to use a tungsten-vapor pressure vessel because of the difficulty of fabricating this metal. Since the vapor-pressure range to be studied (10 2 to 10 &apos; mm) did not appear to extend above the melting point of palladium, a combination of tungsten and graphite served to provide a very satisfactory effusion vessel. The lower half of the graphite vessel was lined with some strips of tungsten foil and the sample of palladium consisting of a coil of sheet was placed in the tungsten liner; in this way, no contamination of the palladium by carbon occurred.
