Mount Isa Mines Limited (Isamine) has process control computers in the major surface plants -- lead smelter, copper smelter, lead/zinc concentrator, and copper concentrator. HP computers are used to implement the more complex stabilizing control loops and control schemes aimed at optimizing plant performance. The choice of control strategies is discussed with particular reference to long-term performance in metallurgical plants. These control schemes must be understood by the process metallurgists who are responsible for the performance and initial fault finding. Major emphasis has been placed on the ability of the control systems to handle most of the common plant upset conditions as well as providing improved performance under normal operating conditions. To illustrate the approaches adopted, the lead/zinc concentrator crushing system and the process bag- house control system for lead smelter off-gas handling are reviewed in detail. The improvements in both of these areas resulting from control systems implementation are discussed.

Having been appointed, on February 19th, 1890, a member of the Commission created by the Legislature of Pennsylvania for the purpose of investigating the " Waste of Coal Mining, with the View to the Utilizing of the Waste" (waste in this case referring specially to the small sizes of anthracite heretofore thrown away), my attention was naturally directed to the mash economical method of burning these small sizes.* Although I had been Familiar with the burning of anthracite for • many years, I found when I came to study the matter carefully that I was far from thoroughly understanding it, particularly with reference to the hurning of the smaller sizes, and that the literature of the subject, which was not very extensive, had more of a tendency to confuse than to enlighten me. I began therefore to investigate the subject so as to arrive if possible at some definite principles applicable to the question. With the aid of my assistant, Mr. John R. Wagner, I began at Drifton a series of experiments upon the burning of small anthracites. We first erected a small furnace with a grate 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, with which we experimented about two months. From the information thus acquired, we designed and built another furnace of about the same size, which gave us facilities for extending our investigations still further. After experimenting several months with the second furnace, we built a third one, which was much larger, having a grate area of about 68 square feet, which was exactly the size of the grate used in the boiler-plants of' Coxe Bros. &

The PbS-PbTe systen has been studied by quench-ing and D.T.A. techniques f?om 400' to 1150°C. Runs were made in evacuated silica tubes so that all equilibria are at the vapor pressure of the system. Lattice parameters of the quenched salnples , measured by X-ray diffraction, show a complete crystalline-solution series existing over a narrow temperature range between approximately 805" and 871°C. An exsolution dome extends from a maximum of about 805"C (approximately 30 mole pct PbTe) to 1 and 96.5 pet PbTe at 400°C. A narrow melting region, deternined by D.T.A., extends form 918c (mp PbTe), The shapes of the liquides and solidus curves imply the existence of a minimum at 871°C at approximately 65 pct PbTe. THe exact composition of the minimum could not be established due to the very narrow two-phase region. At compositions containing less than 50 pet PbTe, liquidus temperatures begin to increase, while the solidus remains almost flat to about 15 mole pet PbTe before beginning to vise toward the mp of PbS (1075 C). LEAD sulfide and lead telluride are isostructural (NaC1 type) semiconductors whose electrical and optical properties have been extensively studied and used in recent years. If appreciable crystalline solution exists between these compounds, the variation of physical properties with composition could be of interest. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent, if any. of crystalline solution, and to obtain the phase diagram for the system. To the knowledge of the authors, only three studies of the system PbS-PbTe have been reported, and, in chronological order, each investigation found an increasing amount of crystalline solution. In 1956, Yamamoto reported finding no evidence of crystalline solution between the compounds. Sindeyeva and Godov-ikov,' in 1959, found very limited crystalline solution. but only under conditions of excess tellurium concentration. Finally Melevski s3 investigation in 1963 indicated that one solid phase exists in the region from PbS to 7 pct PbTe and from 82 pct PbTe to PbTe at 886'C, with an eutectic at 55 pct PbTe at that temperature. Detailed data on the solvus boundary were not given. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS Commercially produced PbTe and PbS powders were used as starting materials. Batches of specific mole percent composition were accurately weighed and mixed in a plastic bottle, in a shaker mill. An analy- sis of impurity content is given in Table I for pure PbS and PbTe and for two randomly selected batches after the powders were mixed. Individual samples, ranging in weight from 0.2 to 0.5 g, were sealed in evacuated silica tubes which had been thoroughly washed and rinsed with acetone and distilled water. Thus all data taken were at the pressure of the system. Subsolidus relations were studied down to 400°C by heating the samples in a vertical tube furnace for 24 hr. The sealed tubes were quenched in water with quench time from the hot zone not exceeding 1 sec. Temperatures were measured by a chromel-alumel thermocouple and controlled to 53°C for most runs. The number and composition of phases present were determined from powder X-ray diffraction patterns taken at room temperature on a Norelco diffractome-ter, using silicon as an external standard. Above 850°C quenching techniques were, in general, found to be unsatisfactory, and differential thermal analysis (D.T.A.) was used to determine melting relations. The evacuated tubes were recessed about 1 cm at one end to accommodate the differential thermocouple. Al203 was used as the reference material in a similar tube containing the other side of the differential couple. For temperature measurements, a separate thermocouple was placed in the recess of the tube containing the sample to be measured, thus providing an opportunity to obtain thermal, as well as differential, analysis. All thermocouples for these measurements were Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh. Temperature and differential curves were recorded separately on synchronized strip-chart recorders. Thermocouples and recording equipment were calibrated using NaCl and gold standards, using the melting points 801" and 1063 C, respectively, which span most of the temperature range of interest. Heating and cooling rates generally were from 4 to 7°C per min. It was found, in fact. that rates ranging from 1.5 to 25°C per min did not significantly change the data obtained.

THE coercimeter, as its name implies, is an instrument for measuring the coercive force[+] of magnetic substances. It was developed by Davis and Hartenheim in the Special Studies Section, Metallurgical Division. A detailed description of this apparatus may be found elsewhere.2 The coercive force determinations of magnetic materials are interesting because of the relationship established by Gottschalk,4 who showed a linear relationship between the magnetization coercive force and the specific surface of comminuted particles. The value of this relationship in determining grinding efficiency has been shown by Dean.3 The determination of the surface contained in the subsieve sizes has always been a difficult problem for investigators. They made approximate measurements of the surface of coarse materials by sizing on screens, but for the determination of the surface of the sub- sieve sizes it was necessary to make detailed grain counts or elutriation tests, or to study dissolution rates. The technical literature contains many references to other methods for determining these surfaces, either by some special apparatus or by mathematical calculations based on distribution lines. Many of the methods are long and tedious, and the results of some, at least, are questionable. The turbidimeter gives quick results on ground cement. By using magnetite as the material to be ground, a simple determination of its coercive force by the coercimeter, requiring 10 minutes or less, can be transposed directly and accurately into units of relative surface. This subject has been pursued further by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., and the following is a description of the results.

ZAY JEFFRIES (communication to the Secretary*).-Having seen Mr. Ruder's micrographs of electrolytic iron, I am of the opinion that the tentative explanation offered verbally is correct. Mr. Ruder has informed me that both of the samples were cooled in the furnace. The structures as shown in Figs. Band C resulted from the last cooling through the temperature range near 900° C. Assuming that the rate of cooling through this range was the same in both cases, the differences in struc-ture of the gamma iron in the two samples must have ]:)]-ought about, in some way, the variations in grain size and grain shape shown in Mr. Ruder's micrographs. Even though there is practically no temperature gradient in muffle-furnace treatment during the "soaking" period, during both heating and cooling, there is a temperature gradient. Fig. B should normally have been fine-grained prior to the last cooling, due to the comparatively low maximum temperature to which it was heated (1,000° C.). On cooling through the allotropic change point at 900°, these small gamma grains, iii conjunction with the temperature gradient, should form an ideal condition for germination. Germinant grains should form near the surface of the sample (the-colder portions) and the small gamma grains would be progressively absorbed as they changed into non-gamma iron. The elongated grains in Fig. B, converging toward the axis of the piece of iron, indicate that germinant grains first formed near tine surface and advanced their boundaries toward the interior of the sample. The gamma grains in Fig. C, however, should have been large, prior to the last cooling, due to time high temperature treatment (1,250 to 1,300° C.). In other words, to use one of Prof. Howe's expressions, the crystalline organization should be very complete and the change from gamma to non-gamma iron on cooling would take place reluctantly. This resistance to change from gamma to non-gamma iron would probably be greater in the interior of the large grains than at their boundaries. Non-gamma iron centers or nuclei would probably form at a great many places, at the grain boundaries, thus masking the influence, to a large

SMALL additions of potassium, aluminum, and silicon as oxides (referred to as dope) to tungsten have been known for several decades to have a very large effect in raising the recrystallization temperature and altering the recrystallized grain morphology of heavily drawn wire. Previous investigations of this doping effect1 6 have led to various speculations but all failed to deduce unequivocally the physical state or the mechanistic influence of the dopant. Recently, walter7 has observed, by transmission electron microscopy, strings of "fine particles" in heavily rolled and annealed doped tungsten sheet and concluded that they were particles of mullite (Al6Si2013). His conclusion was inferred from the electron diffraction patterns of large particles ex-trated by carbon replication of fractured surfaces of slabs rolled from sintered ingots. That the strings of "fine particles" in heavily rolled and annealed sheet were also mullite was an assumption for which no evidence was presented. A similar investigation has been carried out in this laboratory over the past 2 years on a variety of tungsten wire: doped tungsten, and undoped tungsten, as well as 218 doped tungsten purchased from the Lamp Metals and Components Department of the G.E. Lamp Division. Although the electron microscope observations are similar to those reported by Walter, the writer has reached a different conclusion concerning the physical state of the dopant in annealed tungsten. The purpose of this communication is to present evidence that the strings of "fine particles" observed in transmission specimens are not mullite, but are voids. In the present investigation, tungsten wire, 0.88 mm in diam, was rolled into ribbon 0.2 mm by 125 µ thick. The ribbons were annealed in vacuo at a pressure of -1 x 10-5 Torr and then thinned electrolytically in a 2 pct KOH solution. Fig. 1 shows a typical transmissicjn electron micrograph of a sample annealed at 1700°C for 30 min which reveals rows of closely spaced voids having a light contrast (referred to as "fine particles" by Walter) aligned parallel to the working direction. Stereo micrographs (by D. Moon, Westinghouse Research and Development Center) have shown that these voids do not exist on the surfaces of the specimens as a result of thinning but are within the thin-foil specimens. The following experiments have been performed to verify that these are indeed voids. I) Effect of Annealing. Voids are absent in unannealed specimens and appear only after annealing. This behavior cannot be explained if they were solid particles such as mullite. Precipitation (in an unquenched specimen) upon annealing requires solute elements having decreasing solubilities with increasing temperature. Although the solubility of aluminum in tungsten does decrease with increasing temperature, precipitation requires a concentration in excess of 1.4 wt pct,8 which is at least two orders of magnitude higher than the aluminum content in doped tungsten. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-B alloys has been measured up to the solubility limit for the formation of boron nitride. The activity coefficient of nitrogen increases with increasing boron content in the range 0 to 7 wt pct B. From experimen -tal data, values have been calculated for the B-N interaction parameter e3 at temperatures in the range 1550" to 1750°C. A value of 0.038 has been estimated for the boron self-interaction parameter eg at 1550°C. The standard free energy of decomposition of boron nitride into the elements dissolved in liquid iron has been determined to be: ?F° = 45,900 -21.25T in the range from 1550° to 1750°C. The nitride is assumed to be of composition BN. BORON nitride has an unusual combination of properties which make it appear attractive in a wide range of engineering applications. Some of its more important and most recent applications are in the nuclear area, particularly in connection with the liquid-metal cooled reactor concept now receiving considerable emphasis. Boron nitride has a high degree of stability at elevated temperatures. It also has excellent ma-chinability and the ease with which its crystals deform suggests applications as a lubricant. These properties stem from a hexagonal layer-type structure similar to the structure of graphite. One of its primary uses to date has been for seals in liquid-metal pumping systems. It is also used in nuclear reactors as an insulating layer to separate two solid metals which are not themselves compatible under the conditions of temperature and atmosphere in which they are used. Its inertness to liquid metals has also suggested use as a mold-release agent in casting processes. In addition to its excellent machinability and reported inertness to liquid metals such as iron, silicon, aluminum, copper, and zinc, boron nitride has high thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. This combination of properties would make it appear ideal as a refractory crucible material for refining of high-purity liquid metals, for example high-quality steels. However, since it is known that concentrations of boron as low as 50 ppm can have a marked effect on the physical properties of certain steels,' in particular on the creep and stress-rupture properties, an investigation was undertaken to define accurately the chemical equilibrium among boron, nitrogen, and liquid iron in the range of steelmaking temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two experimental approaches to this problem were employed: a Sieverts' method and a quenching method. In the first method, the Sieverts' technique was used to measure the equilibrium nitrogen solubility in liquid Fe-B alloys of 0 to 7 pct B as a function of nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. The solubility limit of the boron nitride phase formed was determined by the point of departure of the nitrogen absorption from Sieverts' Law. This technique has been applied to liquid Fe-Ti alloys by Rao and parlee,' to liquid Fe-A1 alloys by Evans and Pehlke,3 and to solid Fe-V alloys by Fountain and Chipman.4 In the second method a melt of liquid iron was held in a crucible of boron nitride under a known partial pressure of nitrogen gas. After thermodynamic equilibrium was attained, the melt was quenched in a stream of helium and then analyzed by wet-chemical methods for boron and nitrogen. The Sieverts' apparatus used in the first method was essentially of the same design as the one described by Pehlke and Elliott.5 The charge materials were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferro-vac E) supplied by the Crucible Steel Co. and -325 mesh boron powder supplied by Cooper Metallurgical Associates of Cleveland, Ohio. The boron contained less than 0.02 wt pct O, according to supplier's analysis. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to contain the melt. Examination of solidified melts showed these crucibles to be satisfactory with no evidence of any reaction or physical penetration of the crucible wall by the melt. The melt temperature was measured by a disappearing filament-type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diam sight hole in the crucible lid. On Sept. 4, 1914, Mine No. 1 of the Union Coal Co., Adamson, Oklahoma, suddenly caved, entombing thirteen miners whose bodies were never recovered. The seam of coal mined, the Lower Hartshorne, averaged 5 ft. in thickness and dipped at an angle varying from 22" to 30n. The strata overlying the coal seam were sandstones and shales. The mine was worked by the pillar-and-room method, the rooms being driven directly up the dip of the seam. All coal was blasted off the solid. Rooms were turned on short centers and room pillars were thin and irregular, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the form; showing the mine workings. Some cracks had been observed on the surface, it is said, at least a month before the squeeze occurred, but the collapse of the mine workings came very suddenly. As is usual when squeezes occur on such steep dips and the pillars fail, the crush progressed rapidly down the dip until it reached solid coal; there was a line of break, or draw, over in the solid coal. Several well-defined cracks appeared on the surface, after the mine had squeezed, but there was no appreciable subsidence of the surface, the weight seemed to be thrown entirely to the dip. About one year after the squeeze, and after the workings of the adjoining mine, NO. 4, had been retimbered and made safe, the writer inspected the tenth north (right) entry, or lift, off of No. 4 slope, which was below and fairly near the lowest caved portion of mine No. 1. The roof shale was composed of thin layers, which had been bent in somewhat the same manner as the leaves of a book having flexible covers are bent when the book is folded or rolled up in the hands. Though the mine workings are immediately beneath the streets and buildings of the mining town of Adamson, business was not disturbed by the squeeze, so far as any subsidence of the surface was concerned. No surface monuments were available and no elevations were taken, but the mine workings had been accurately surveyed and traversed, and the streets of the town overlying the mine workings had been carefully platted on the mine map, so that it was possible to locate accurately the cracks on the surface.

The effect of netltron irracliation on mart ensite transformation in the iron-nickel system was studied by means of electrical resistance and magnetic induction measuremertts. Irradiation lowers the M8 temperature of the allay, causes changes in the electrical and magnetic properties of the high-temperature phase which indicate either an accelemtion of phase separation or a clustering of nickel, and enhances strain recovery on specimens partially transformed to martensite prior to irradiation. Possible mechanisms to account for the effects; are discussed. 1 HERE is a good deal of evidence to indicate that neutron irradiation is capable of affecting phase changes in metals and alloys. While the mechanism of the effect often is not well understood, such studies hold promise of improving our understanding not only of irradiation damage but also of the phase changes involved. To date systematic and detailed investigations have been made of the influence of nuclear radiation on order-disorder transformations in the copper-gold, nickel-manganese, and copper-zinc system, and on precipitation reactions in the copper-iron, nickel-beryllium, and copper-beryllium system.' These solid-state reactions are diffusion controlled and the results can be explained largely on the basis of enhanced diffusion due to the presence of irradiation produced vacancies. Reversion of low-temperature eutectoid phases to the high-temperature phase has been observed in the fissionable uranium-molybdenum and uranium-niobium systems.2 Here it is necessary and logical to postulate a displacement spike mechanism to account for the effect. The only case of irradiation induced diffusionless transformation in metals is the allo-tropic transformation of p to a tin reported by Flee-man and Dienes. 3 They found that neutron irradiation markedly decreases the incubation time for transformation, but the mechanisnl is not well understood. Another diffusionless transformation which one might expect to be influenced by neutron irradiation is the martensite transformation. This transformation is known to be sensitive to strain, structural hardening, and the presence of imperfections.6,7 Since the transformation is diffusionless, one also

Though air jets occupy only a minor role in the ventilation of mines and other enclosures, their importance in this respect is greater than is commonly recognized and may be considerably increased as our conception of their modes of operation becomes clearer. The object of this paper is to discuss some of the ways in which air jets are involved in mine ventilation and some possible applications to the ventilation of mines and other enclosed spaces. The mention of air jets ordinarily suggests the use of some form of an air injector, such as the Venturi blower occasionally used for auxiliary ventilation in mines, or the Saccardo (injector) system used to a limited extent for ventilating railroad tunnels. Actually, the term covers such common phenomena as the discharge of air from fan pipes and coal-mine line brattices, and even from smoke stacks and fans. A knowledge of the general mode of air entrainment by jets also helps to explain certain phenomena—some mine-gas explosions, for instance—that otherwise would remain obscure. Jet action has been involved in three recent series of Bureau of Mines experi-ments in which the author has participated: experiments on fan-pipe discharge, On the dilution of gases discharged from a stack and On the ventilation of a ship's hold. Available data on the discharge of jets into large openings and on the design and performance of air injectors have been analyzed in considerable detail and supplementary experiments are planned for after the war. The results of the fan-pipe experiments have been combined with the analyses of data on jet discharge into large spaces, and have been published.' The results of the stack-gas dilution tests, which refer to a jet discharged into a crosswind, have also been published2 and a paper on the design and performance of injectors has been prepared for publication.3 These technical experiments and analyses form the background and the documented evidence for the following nontechnical discussion of the use of air jets in mine ventilation. Jet Characteristics The jets commonly encountered are those in which the air is in turbulent— as opposed to laminar, or streamline-— motion. The characteristics under discussion apply only to such turbulent jets and have their basis in theories of the mixing of turbulent air currents. Such jets have basic characteristics that are present, though variable in form, regardless of whether the jet expands freely in space, whether the expansion is limited by adjacent walls, or whether the jet propels air through a flow circuit. They expand at definite angles and entrain the surrounding air, even though the entrained air must be obtained by recirculation of their own air streams. As the quantity of air in motion in the mixed stream increases, the average velocity of the stream decreases.

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) IN September last I had my attention called by Mr. R. G. Leckie to a deposit of nickel in the township of Orford, province of Quebec. In many ways it has proved to be a subject of great interest. As this ore is, as far as I can learn, entirely new in mineralogy and metallurgy, it has seemed to me that it would be a matter of interest to the Institute to have laid before it, in a short paper, the peculiarities I have met with in studying it. This deposit of nickel was first described by Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, our President, in the Geology of Canada, 1863, p. 738, in the following terms : "The general diffusion of nickel throughout the magnesian rocks of the Quebec group has been already noticed. It has, however, never been met with in any considerable quantities in these rocks, although workable deposits of its ores may reasonably be looked for

IN a series of papers published recently,1 R. F. Mehl and associates have studied the characteristics of form and orientation of many segregate structures and have found diversified conditions which can be explained only by postulating some specific kind of cooperative mechanism permitting the matrix lattice in some favorable region to transform into the segregate lattice in an adaptable region presenting a geometrically similar arrangement of atoms. We have collected the published data on crystallographic relationships of this sort, chiefly derived from Mehl's work, in Table 1. It is evident at once that the crystal structure of the matrix does not uniquely determine the location of the plate structures or other forms assumed by the segregate. Thus, the first seven items in the table represent precipitation of platelike forms from a matrix of face-centered cubic structure, but these plates are found stratified along planes of form {111 }, {100 }, {110 } or another unidentified form, depending upon specific conditions involving the nature and concentration of the segregating substance. Again, in a matrix of body-centered cubic structure, plates, needles or stars have been found and the favored inner surface of segregation may be a plane of form 11101, 11121, 12101, or indeed a surface without crystallographic indices defining a bundle of close-packed lattice lines (strings of atoms) taken more or less at random. Such a surface might be formed ideally by revolving one of these parallel strings of atoms around another as an axis. Schmidt2 showed a diagram according to Joseph Ruhrmann indicating that the solubility of manganese in liquid magnesium falls from about 2.65 per cent at 790°C. to about 0.5 per cent at 675°C. The curve was extrapolated to show zero solubility at the melting point of pure magnesium (Fig. I). This work suggested that at the lowest manganese contents it was not possible to detect either a eutectic or the formation of a solid solution, so that manganese was stated to be present in the structure as large individual crystals. Two years after the presentation of, these results, Gann3 brought evidence to show that some manganese is capable of dissolving to form a solid solution, any excess of manganese present then assuming chiefly the form of small blue-gray particles scattered throughout the primary magnesium crystals, occasionally in clusters but seldom at the boundaries. He presented micrographs of cast alloys containing 0.1, 0.4 and 1.0 per cent manganese that show a small amount of coring around the individual particles due to solid solution, and indicate that the location of the manganese particles is closely associated with the original dendritic structure of the primary crystallization. He also pointed out that the amount of manganese that can be dissolved in magnesium depends on the amount of other alloying elements present, the effect of the second alloying element being to decrease the amount of manganese retained in the alloy. E. Schmid and G. Siebe14 have determined the solid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature by means of precision X-ray diffraction measurements. They found that the solubility is 3.4 per cent at 645°C. and decreases to practically zero at 200°C. It is apparent that the X-ray diffraction measurements of Schmid and Siebel are not in agreement with the results of Ruhrmann as presented by Schmidt. This disagreement, and also the lack of data on magnesium-aluminum-manganese and magnesium-zinc-manganese systems, led the author to the present investigation, to determine accurately the liquid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature. Experimental Method The experimental method for making solubility determinations consists of saturating the molten magnesium or the alloys with manganese at various temperatures and analyzing the dip samples taken from these melts. Melting is carried out in a cylindrical steel pot heated by an electric resistance furnace. The pot had a metallic outside coating to protect the steel against oxidation, and a graphite inside lining to prevent the contamination of the melt by prolonged contact with iron. The inside diameter of the pot was 4 in. and the depth 12 inches.

Conservation Order M-68 was important, but other things, such as operators and members of drilling crews joining the armed services and going into war plants, had an important part. The reduction in number of completions was considerable. In 1941, the total of wells drilled was 1561 but in 1942 the total was 1008. The total initial daily open flow discovered by the 701 gas wells drilled in 1941 was 492,000 M cu. ft., whereas the open flow of the 471 gas wells completed in 1942 was 314,488 M cu. ft. The total initial daily production of the 333 oil wells drilled in 1941 was 10,300 bbl., and in 1942 the 181 oil wells had a total daily initial of 7570 bbl. The average daily initial per gas well therefore was somewhat less in 1942 when compared with the preceding year, but the initial per ail well increased about 36 per cent over 1941. General Activity The total depth of the 652 oil and gas wells drilled in 1942 was 1,597,000 ft. The most active county was Perry, where 63 oil wells were drilled, most of them in Clayton township. In Morgan County. where 43 gas wells were drilled, the greatest activity was in York and Marion townships. Medina County was third in number of wells drilled, although of the total of 33 gas wells in the county, 26 were in the new Hinckley township pool. The total initial open flow of these 26 wells was 39,202 M CU. ft., and was considerably larger than from any other single area. Muskingum was an active county, particularly Washington and Wayne townships, in each of which seven gas wells were drilled, and Blue Rock and Harrison townships, in each of which five gas wells were drilled.

During the year, 164 dry wildcats were drilled, 80 dry wells in proved areas, 31 gas wells, and 1158 successful oil-well completions for a total of 1433 wells, compared with a total of 765 in 1942. With new discoveries of only 20,000,000 and production of 283,000,000 bbl. for the year, total reserves of California oil have decreased more than 250,000,000 bbl. However, revised estimates of the reserves of old fields indicate an increase in the state's reserves of I00,000,000 barrels. The completion of 1158 wells has served only to maintain the maximum efficient daily rate of production at 800,000 barrels. There is evidence in many fields that oil is being withdrawn too rapidly to obtain the maximum recovery, and more rapidly than is conducive to good production practice. Statistics for 1943 as compared with I942 are shown in the table in the next column, Supply and Demand Steadily mounting needs of the military forces and increased industrial consumption raised total demand for all petroleum products on the Pacific Coast to 914,000 bbl. daily in 1943. That all-time record demand was 149,ooo bbl. daily higher than in 1942 and 214,000 bbl. daily above 1941 demand. Despite restrictions due to shortages of critical material, crude-oil production was boosted from 680,000 bbl. daily in 1942 to 779,000 bbl. daily in 1943, the highest level in 15 years. However, the new crude supply plus natural gasoline production and imports from other states totaled only 840,000 bbl. daily, leaving a deficiency between supply and demand of 74,000 bbl. daily. That shortage had to be made up by withdrawals from inventories, which had been steadily depleted during the previous four years. Aboveground reserves, which totaled 159,574,000 bbl. on Jan. I, 1939, were down to ~8.000,000, bbl. at the end of 1943. Significantly enough, the greater part of that decrease occurred during the last six months of I9437 when more than 23,000,000 bbl. was taken from inventories of both crude and products. West Texas and New Mexico have been overshadowed by the dcvelopment in East Texas to such an extent that the area has been placed on a settled production basis by most of the operators. Considerable develop-mCnt work on both proven and unproven acreage remains to be carried 011, but the incentive, a ready and profitable market, has been lacking. The main characteristics of the fields in this area are so well known that they are not described again in this paper, which thus resolves itself into a statistical review of the more important production features of the area. Proration has been in effect during the year and has been rigorously applied with the full cooperation of all producers. Proration in West Texas and New Mexico is based in the more productive fields on a potential and acreage distribution of the allowance to the individual wells or acreage units. Potentials are determined generally by a short production test of from 1 to 4 hr.; and the hourly rate is multiplied by 24 to obtain the 24-hr. production or rated potential of the separate wells. The potential values thus set up have been questioned by many production men who are not willing to concede that the instantaneous (hourly) capacity of a well to produce is its potential capacity for a day with all other wells in the pool producing at their capacity. However, the potential of a well determined as above remains its chief rating as a measure of the permeability in place and as an indication of the possible reserve feeding that well. The acreage factor has made it unnecessary to overdevelop properties in order to obtain an allowance proportionate to neighbors who are willing to drill an excessive number of wells on a piece of acreage in the hopes of a quick drainage and a corresponding profit. Proration has resulted in an orderly development of many of the pools in this area on the base as outlined above, resulting in more reasonable spacing of wells and the more even withdrawal of oil and the ensuing expectation of high recoveries. Big Lake.—Production from the shallow or 3000-ft. pay at Big Lake totaled a little more than 3,000,000 bbl. during the year, and we may expect a smaller recovery for 1933. The results of an investigation of vanadium-rich V-O solid solutions are presented, indicating the structure and lattice parameters of two solutions, a and ß, and their approximate temperature-composition existence. The a solution is the terminal body-centered cubic one, and contains up to 3.2 atomic pct 0. The ß solution has an ordered body-centered tetragonal structure, is formed at 1270°C, and exists from about 15 to 22 atomic pct 0. From the evidence available, the various phase boundaries have no appreciable temperature dependence. Evidence has been found for a polymorphic transformation in pure vanadium at 1550°C. IN an earlier investigation' dealing with the preparation of pure vanadium by calcium reduction of the oxide, it was found that small amounts of oxygen drastically reduced the ductility of the metal. Because this effect was so marked, it was decided to make a study of the solubility of oxygen in solid vanadium. This report deals principally with this solubility and the nature of the phase relationships in the vanadium-rich region, particularly at temperatures below 1300 °C. However, during the investigation enough data on the V-0 system were obtained to make it appear worthwhile to present a tentative phase diagram up to the composition VO. The only significant prior work found on this system are the contributions of Klemm and Grimm,' and Mathewson et al.3 Klemm and Grimm prepared a wide range of V-O compositions by powder techniques including the compositions VO.l, VO.2, VO.3 and VO4 (9.1, 16.8, 23, and 28.6 atomic pct 0, respectively). The first three compositions were found to consist of a body-centered tetragonal solid solution, while the last also showed lines of VO (NaCl structure). They found that the parameter c, increased and the parameter a, decreased with increasing concentration of oxygen. For their composition VO.27, or about 16.8 atomic pct O, they cite the values a, = 2.948A, c, = 3.53A, and c/a = 1.2. Klemm and Grimm made no attempt to determine the solid solubility limit nor to construct a phase diagram. They did, however, give some data on the homogeneity range of VO, and they proposed a structure for the body-centered tetragonal solid solution; these points will be taken up later. Materials and Preparation of Samples The vanadium used in this investigation was prepared in the laboratory by the method previously mentioned.' A typical analysis is as follows: Fe, 0.007 pct; Si, 0.02; Ca, 0.06; C, 0.224; O2, 0.044; N,, 0.0017; H2, 0.003; and V, 99.34 ±0.3 (assay). The vanadium assay is probably low by about the error given. The impurities total about 0.36 which, if subtracted from 100, gives a purity of about 99.6. At the time material was being prepared for this work no suitable technique was available for melting vanadium without appreciable contamination. The procedure adopted therefore was to cut the calcium-reduced regulii into slices which were then rolled to strip about 0.025 in. thick for oxygen diffusion. Pieces of rolled vanadium of approximately 0.025xY4xl in. and weighing about 0.3 g were suspended in a vertical fused-silica tube which was part of an ordinary gas absorption apparatus. The silica tube was heated by an electric resistance-tube furnace which could be raised around the silica tube or lowered away from it as desired. This apparatus had no novel features which require detailed description. Other than the silica tube and furnace, it consisted of a glass system evacuated by a liquid nitrogen trapped mercury diffusion pump, a mercury-operated gas burette, a McLeod and a Pirani gage, and a mercury manometer. It was also equipped with suitably located stopcocks for isolating various parts of the system; the vacuum ordinarily attained was between 10" and 10-6 mm of mercury. Oxygen generated by decomposing MnO2 was passed through anhydrous magnesium perchlo-rate before introducing it into the gas burette and thence to the absorption chamber.
