The Bryan Mound salt dome in Freeport, Texas, has some of the largest and oldest solution caverns in the U.S. There are a total of five caverns of varying shapes and sizes randomly distributed throughout the salt dome. When the caverns were converted from a brine production to an oil storage operation, the effects on long-term stability of the caverns and inter-cavern behavior were analyzed to evaluate the future safety of the storage operation. The analysis was based on a worst-possible-case scenario, including accidental wellhead pressure loss. The impact of this pressure loss upon the thinnest partition between the two closest caverns was analyzed, using a case example of storing lightest weight LPG, thereby creating maximum differential pressures between these two caverns. The finite element method with the REM computer code was utilized for this analysis. Results of the analysis illustrate the basic mechanisms of the long-term behavior of the multiple caverns in the LPG storage operation.

Detailed descriptions are given of materials, apparatus and the experimental procedure used to study the effect of bacteria on sandstone permeability. The factors affecting permeability during injection of bacterial suspensions which have been investigated are: (I) concentration of bacteria; (2) core permeability and median pore size; (3) species of bacteria, mode of aggregation and relative size; (4) injection rate or pressure differential; (5) mean pressure; and (6) depth of penetration of bacteria. The investigation demonstrated that bacteria cannot reduce core pertneability to zero and that their effect on permeability is subject to definite limitations. Remedial or permeability restoration studies also were made. Acidization in combination with reverse flow war found to be an effective method for restoring permeability In cores partially plugged with bacteria. The relationship between the bacterial quantities in the laboratory tests and those found in field operations is discussed. The linear laboratory flow data have been translated into terms of field radial systems; these data indicate the most practical methods of maintaining injection rates in the presence of bacteria are to increase injection pressures or hydraulically fracture the formation. INTRODUCTION It has long been known that various bacteria flourish in the above-ground components of oil field water-injection systems. The presence of these bacteria has led to the suspicion that they might enter into the causes for reduction of injection well permeability, but only recently has an attempt been made to describe the effects quantitatively.1 Biocides are used in many cases without a firm knowledge as to whether the bacteria are killed, or if they are, whether the dead cells affect formation permeability. This project was undertaken as part of a study to determine the effect of bacteria, residual oil and precipitated solids such as iron sulfide or calcium carbonate on the permeability of sandstones and to learn whether any of these materials adversely affect brine injectivity in secondary recovery or disposal operations. This report deals with that portion relating to the effect of bacteria. MATERIALS CORES Three different permeability ranges of Berea sandstone cores were used in the study. The range of initial, absolute brine permeabilities kj were: high — 278 to 400 md: medium—130 to 162 md; and low—17.7 to 48.3 md. The permeability data for the cores used in the tests are included in Table 1. All cores were cut to a nominal 1 in. diameter. Following air permeability determinations, they were molded with an epoxy resin in 1.5 in. ID aluminum sleeves. The sleeves had drilled and tapped holes for intermediate pressure connections along the length of the cores. After molding, the high- and medium-permeability cores were trimmed to 4 in. in length and the low-permeability cores to 2 in. These lengths resulted in pore volumes of approximately 10.9, 10.4 and 4.4 ml, respectively, for the high-, medium- and low-permeability cores. Pressure-transmitting channels were drilled through the plastic into the core proper, using the sleeve holes as drill guides. Width and depth of channel penetration into the core proper were approximately 0.03 in. and 0.05 in., respectively. Three pressure taps were used with all cores; for the high- and medium-permeability cores the taps were spaced 1 in. apart; for the low-permeability cores the taps were spaced 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 in. from the inlet end. Pore size distributions were calculated from restored-state capillary pressure curves for representative cores in each of the three permeability ranges. In each case the pore size range with the greatest percentage of the pore space included the very small pores up to 0.5 micron in radius. The median pore radii were in the 5.5 to 6 micron range for the high-permeability cores; in the 4.5 to 5 micron range for the medium-permeability cores; and in the 3.5 to 4 micron range for the low-permeability cores.

A quantitative x-ray diffraction method has been developed for the analysis of alteration minerals in wallrock. Alteration data are plotted and contoured (analogous to geochemical data). Alteration trends outlined by this technique correlate closely with geochemical anomalies, and in some cases extend well beyond the perimeter of anomalous base metal values. "Monomineralic contouring," applied originally to porphyry-type mineralization, has been extended to other types of mineralization, including volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Equipment and techniques used in the quantitative measurement of alteration mineralogy are discussed.

A loch-grade copper-nickel deposit, with an estimated 4.6 Gt (5 billion st) and average analyses of 0.6% copper, 0.2% nickel, occurs in northeastern Minnesota. In addition to copper, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals, the Duluth gabbro contains magnetite, ilmenite, olivine, plagioclase, and biotite. It u estimated that flotation tailings that would be produced by a concentrator of optimal size to sustain a smelter would amount to 20 Mt/a (22 million stpy). The flotation tailings, having already been ground, warrant a closer examination for recovery and use of potential byproducts. Residual sulfide minerals and fibrous minerals may also be isolated and treated separately for useful purposes or for disposal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Two flowsheets were developed; one involving preconcentration by low- and high-intensity magnetic separation and another involving preconcentration by gravity concentration. Concentration methods for recovering and purifying individual byproduct minerals were investigated. From their chemical, physical, and mineralogical characteristics, the potential areas of application and marketabilities of each product fraction were surveyed.

Soluble sodium silicate materials have well known applications in flotation for desliming, selective depression and corrosion control. Recent advances in the understanding of the complex polymeric nature of silicate solutions using NMR spectroscopy, combined with our studies of the effects of polymeric silicate anions on metal ion activities in solution, oxide mineral surface charges and surfactant adsorption on clays are related to beneficiation processes. The results of these studies indicate the sodium silicates can be used to cause a solution chemistry and particle surface charge characteristics favorable to enhanced effectiveness in typical ore beneficiation systems.

The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on [fig. 3], in conjunction with [Figs. 1 and 2]. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected.

THE morphology and mechanism of the proeutectoid a and the eutectoid reactions have been recently investigated in some detail in an iodide-base Ti—7.22 pct Cr alloy.' These studies have now been extended to an iodide-base Ti—10.8 pct Cr alloy in order to evaluate the effects of composition on the proeutectoid and eutectoid transformations in titanium-chromium alloys. The alloy used in this investigation had the following composition: 10.8 Cr, 0.0327 0, 0.011 N, 0.0063 H, and 0.011 pct C. The fluid energy mill has been in use since the 1930's when an early patent was granted to N.H. Andrews in the USA. The microniser design has been basically unaltered since that date and current designs such as the Airfilco "Micronizer" have been progressively developed from results based on wide experience. The authors have been engaged in a research programme to establish optimum design and operational parameters for the Micronizer so as to provide a more quantitative basis for scale-up prediction of results. An introductory section will first trace the development of fluid energy milling including reference to other designs which have developed alongside the micronizer (especially the “Jet-o-miser"). With regard to design features the number of fluid injection nozzles and their size was investigated to establish the optimum range. Injection angle and, the consequent diameter of the internal "tangential circle" was carefully studied to determine the effect of this parameter on product size. The research was carried out using fine limestone as the test material with air as the grinding medium. Feed size fractions of 0-120µm, 0-250µm, 0-500µm, and 300-600µm were milled and product size analyses were carried out using the Coulter Counter technique.

The practice of dentistry, particularly the construction of artificial dentures and "bridges," involves a unique and difficult application of the precious-metal alloys. Appliances used in the mouth are continuously exposed to corrosive agencies which can hardly be described as mild, and must remain free from tarnish and be substantially immune to corrosion. Limitations with respect to space and weight demand high physical properties, while complexity of form requires ease of working. The high corrosion resistance required necessitates the use of alloys of high precious metal content. The usual expedient of resorting to mechanical working to produce the requisite strength and stiffness cannot be utilized because of the frequency of annealing and soldering operations. To meet these difficult conditions manufacturers of dental goods were early led, unknowingly perhaps, to the production of precipitation-hardening or temperable alloys. The excellent properties of iridium-platinum may have suggested the addition of platinum metals to the conventional gold-silver-copper alloys to produce greater strength and hardness. It was found that such quarternary alloys retained their high physical properties after passing through the usual soldering process; i. e., heating to 750° to 800" C. and cooling naturally in the air. Later it was discovered that they could be softened and rendered more ductile by heating to the same temperature and quenching in water. These early examples of precipitation hardening, for years the common knowledge of dental practitioners and laboratory technicians, escaped the attention of the scientific world and discovery of the transformation which was responsible for this hardening was disclosed by the Russian investigators of the system Au-Cu, Kurnakow, Schemtschushny and Zasedatelev~,(~)$ although the optimum conditions for securing good properties in aged alloys were not given attention.

BASED on theories of ullins," the mechanisms of grain-boundary grooving have been determined for low-melting metals such as copper in an inert atmospheres or in liquid lead.4 The purpose of this investigation was to study grain-boundary grooving in the refractory Group VI-A metals, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and the bcc solid-solution alloys, r-35e, 0-33e,= and -25e,' at 0.6 to 0.9 of included to see whether Mullins' theories were applicable to them as well. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The materials chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, Cr-35Re, Mo-33Re, and W-25Re were in the form of 0.050-cm-thick sheet assaying 99.98 pct or better. The nominal carbon level was generally 30 ppm. The oxygen + nitrogen + hydrogen content was -50 ppm. Mo-33Re and W-25Re were prepared by powder-metallurgy methods and supplied by Chase Brass and Copper Co. The remaining materials were arc-cast. Chromium and Cr-35Re were prepared at Battelle by arc melting, extruding, swaging, and rolling. Mo-0.003C was supplied by Climax Molybdenum Co., and Mo-0.02C and tungsten by Universal Cyclops Corp. As a source of liquid metals, tin and silver granules assaying 99.98 pct were used. Spectrographic analyses indicated the presence of -100 ppm each of iron and silicon. Vacuum melting reduced the combined gas content to c5 ppm (2.60,, 0.9N2, 0.4H2 in tin and l.602, 0.7N2, and c0.04H2 in silver). Specimens were prepared for grain-boundary grooving. Coupons 0.5 by 1.5 cm with a small hole in one end, or substrates 1.5 by 1.5 cm, were cut from sheet. The specimens were annealed in containers of the same material to provide a vapor-solid equilibrium as well as to protect them from gaseous impurities. Outgassing was done at 2 x 10"5 mm for 15 to 30 min at 1150°C for chromium and Cr-35Re, 1750°C for molybdenum and Mo-33Re, and 2600°C for tungsten and W-25Re. Then recrystallization to a stable grain size of about 0.5 mm was accomplished by annealing at least 1 hr at 1600°C for chromium, 1800°C for Cr-35Re, 2350°C for molybdenum, and 2300°C for Mo-33Re in a rhenium-element resistance furnace under 1 atm of static argon or helium. A priest at Shenandoah, Pa., one day persuaded the president of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. to slush breaker waste and culm into old mine workings in order to save his church from being destroyed by surface subsidence. The year was 1864, the project was successful, and history recorded the first use of hydraulic backfilling. Shortly afterward, the method was applied to several eastern coal mines for area fill to control subsidence. In 1884, hydraulic backfilling was used to control a mine fire in the Schuylkill region of Pennsylvania. The idea was taken to Europe by German engineers and developed successfully at the Myslovitz colliery in Upper Silesia in 1901. From there it was applied to several mines throughout Europe.
