IN THE year just past there were produced in the United States about 170,000,000 tons of sand and gravel. Much of this was pit-run material used for gravelling roads and as railroad ballast on lines that did not carry heavy traffic. But more than half of it was marketed as washed and sized, or graded, material. The methods used for preparing sand and gravel for the market have long been used in ore dressing and, as in ore dressing, depend on differences in the specific gravity of two substances or in the size or weight of particles. But many changes in the design and operation of plants and machines have been necessary. In ore dressing, the concentrate is only a small part of the feed; in sand and gravel washing, it is much the larger part of the feed. In addition, such close work as is needed when con¬centrating a metallic ore is not needed when washing gravel; the ability to put through a large tonnage is more important, and sizing, which is only a preliminary process in ore dressing, is an end to be attained. Rock crushers are found in most sand and gravel plants and they are used to break up the larger pieces from the deposit (known as boulders and cobbles) which are removed by a scalping screen. The crusher discharge is usually sent back to the scalping screen, the perforations in this screen setting the maximum size of the finished product.

Electrowinning is the prevalent technique for recovering silver from wastes generated in silver-tungsten electrical contact fabrication. Such scrap is placed in a permeable plastic basket, which constitutes the anode compartment, and is suspended in a larger cell where the cathode is mounted. A silver nitrate solution is used as the electrolyte and, upon application of an electric field, the silver migrates to the cathode where it deposits. At times, there is tungsten migration to the cathode compartment and consequent co-deposition with the silver. This W contamination, which may amount to several thousand mg/L (oz per gal), necessitates additional purification of the deposited Ag and its removal would, therefore, be advantageous. Eliminating the W impurity also extends the operating period of the cell with corresponding increases in the Ag output and savings in labor costs. The solution to this problem lies in the selective removal of the W from the AgNO3 electrolyte either by liquid-liquid or liquid-solid extraction. Although W extraction in the liquid-liquid mode with a quaternary amine or other reagents as extractants appears feasible, particularly in view of the low pH (about 1.5) of the system, this approach was not considered because it is essentially a batch-type process. It is a more elaborate industrial operation than extraction by ion exchange resins. Implementing the latter process consists of passing the electrolyte from the electrowinning cell through an ion exchange column which would extract the tungsten selectively and returning the tungsten-free stream to the cathode compartment. This process continues until the W extraction efficiency decreases (as a result of resin loading) below an acceptable value. The electrolyte is then directed through another, similar column while the W values are eluted off the first one and the resin is regenerated for another cycle. Thus, two columns in a parallel flow pattern provide the means for continuous processing of the electrolyte feedstock.

In creep testing, material is subjected to a constant load, preferably at a constant temperature, and its rate of deformation is measured. The method of loading can be of various types but in this paper only creep testing under tensile load will be considered. The ordinary tensile test is essentially a comparison test in conditions that frequently hear little or no relation to those under which the test material is to be used in service. The purpose of creep tests is to measure the strength of the test material at slow rates of deformation that more nearly approach the rates realized in service. One purpose of this paper is to illustrate that the creep test, in addition to its value as a service test, is superior to the ordinary tensile test as a sensitive tool for the comparison of certain metals in investigative testing. The other purpose is to describe equipment having distinctive features of design that make it especially suitable for such tests. Representative data obtained with this equipment on a group of rolled zinc-base materials are given. These data are compared with those from practical comparison tests of the creep type on weatherstrip fabricated from the same group of materials. The comparison illustrates the value of the fast creep test and of the equipment. The Equipment The creep equipment consists essentially of a tank containing a constant-temperature oil bath in which the creep of 14 specimens, loaded by means of levers, is measured by means of one movable extensometer. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 illustrate its general construction and appearance. Constant-temperalure Oil Balh.—A common constant-temperature bath requiring only one temperature-controlling equipment for a number of specimens was chosen as the best means of fulfilling the requirements of low cost and compactness. In addition, this allows the testing of a group of specimens under identical temperature conditions.

A problem often encountered is the provision of materials which have impurity contents below a certain specified level. This problem is in some cases solved by making use of the segregation of the impurity with respect to the liquid and solid states of the material: an ingot of the material is subjected to directional solidification and the ends of the ingot. which are richer in solutes which respectively raise and lower the melting point of the solvent, are removed. An important extension of this process is the zone-refining process invented by pfann,' in which molten zones are passed successively along the length of an ingot and displace solutes towards the ends. Pfann's process is particularly appropriate in cases for which the segregation coefficient k does not differ greatly from unity, or when the impurity content must be kept extremely low (-=,6 atom fraction); it is widely used, particularly in the purification of materials for use in semiconductor electronic devices. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate theoretically the efficiency of the above refining processes; that is! we determine the most economic method of attaining a given yield of solvent of specified purity, taking into account the variables of the process. One variable of interest is the effective value of the segregation coefficient. which depends on the rate of movement of the liquid-solid interface and on the degree of stirring in the liquid; in addition to this, in the zone-refining process we are also interested in the choice of zone length for most efficient operation. A mathematical determination is made here of the lengths of successive molten zones which give, for an initially uniform distribution, the most efficient removal of a solute of arbitrary distribution coefficient. In order to be able to give a quantitative treatment of efficiency, we first define figures of merit applicable to a given distribution of solute. IT has been pointed out by Cottrell' and Fisher that long-range order would produce superdis-locations, consisting of two partial dislocations separated by an out-of-phase region. The mutual repulsion of the partial dislocations is balanced by the surface tension of the out-of-phase domain boundary joining the dislocations (Fig. 1). The calculation of the equilibrium spacing of the dislocations has yet to be made. The argument uses the Bragg and Williams theory of long-range order." The metal under consideration is the A-B, body-centered type, such as ß brass. The slip system is taken to be [Ill], (110). Since nearest-neighbor interactions are considered, only the atoms position in the two (110) planes adjoining the slip plane have to be labeled. Corner sites are called a and a' in the top and bottom (110) planes, respectively. Similarly ß and ß are the body-centered sites. Thus, a and ß and 0 and a sites are nearest neighbors. Assume that the bottom plane moves and the top plane is fixed during slip; the atoms in a and ß sites exchange sites but atoms in a and ß sites remain fixed. Fraction of A atoms in a sites, for example, is given by fa and fa. for the un-slipped and slipped condition, respectively. THE Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine mining division, District of Cochrane, in the northern part of the Province of Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, with a population of 25,119, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto. GEOLOGY The property is situated on the northwest limb of a major syncline, which pitches northeast at approximately 50°. The principal rocks of the Hollinger area are of pre-Cambrian age and consist of altered, schistose, Keewatin lava flows intruded by stocks of schistose, quartzfeldspar porphyry generally assigned to the Algoman period. The structure of the Keewatin series is extremely complex as a result of close folding and some faulting. The schistosity, trending north 70° east and dipping steeply to the southeast, is most highly developed along a subsidiary anticline in which the major porphyry bodies occur. The ore bodies, which exhibit three principal structures, consist of quartz veins and associated pyritized wall rock. Some lodes are composed of en echelon veins, others exhibit a main quartz body with branching stringers and a third consists of a single definite lead. Gold, in a coarse visible form, may be confined to quartz in some ore bodies but in others it is finely divided and is found not only in quartz but also associated with pyrite in the adjacent wall rock. In many veins the distribution of gold is such that there are several ore sections, separated by areas of low-grade material, in the same vein although its physical appearance remains unchanged. The veins form a very complex pattern in an ore zone which in places attains a length of 6000 ft. and a width of 4000 ft. They are most abundant in the Keewatin lavas in the neighborhood of the porphyry bodies. Few of the veins are persistent for long distances, though some

(written discussiont).-For electrical measuring instruments, especially those types that involve the Wheat-stone bridge or potentiometer principle and standards of electrical resist-ance, there has been, for a considerable time, a need for better resistance materials. For a satisfactory resistance material, much depends on the purposes for which it is to be used. For potentiometers and Wheatstone bridges, such as are in more or less general use, and the more common forms of resistance standards, a good quality of manganin answers fairly well. However, it should not be presumed that manganin is considered ideal for the purpose, for in measuring instruments and resistance stand-ards, there is still much to be desired. An experience of more than 10 years in the study of the resistance standards and resistance apparatus shows that manganin resistances change with time in a way that is very annoying and the maintenance of the unit of resistance to the desired accuracy requires an excessive amount of work or may be said to be prac-tically impossible. The changes in resistance are generally most rapid and erratic in resistances of very low and very high values. In resist-ances of low value, the resistance material is often in the form of thin sheets so that the surface is large and usually more or less unprotected from the atmosphere, or the oil in. the case of oil-immersed standards. In resistances of high value, the resistance material is in the form of fine wire and, therefore, the surface is large compared with the cross-section. In resistances of medium value, the surface is less, compared with the cross-section, or better protected, usually by a silk wrapping impregnated with shellac. This suggests that one of the difficulties with manganin is slow surface action or oxidation, even when an effort has been made to protect the surface from such action However, the changes observed cannot all be accounted for on this basis. There are, presumably, also some internal changes in the resistance material even when it has been annealed. Further; the changes in manganin resistances seem to be more or less independent of its electrical properties. In other respects, too, manganin is not ideal.

THE recent installation of a combination dust catcher, gas washer and precipitator at Carrie blast furnaces of the Homestead Steel Works has given very satisfactory results. The following description of the gas-cleaning installation is based on actual operating experience. When Carrie blast furnace No. 3 was rebuilt the decision was made to fine-clean all the gas produced by the furnace, because the management wanted fine-cleaned gas for fuel in the stoves and boilers. In order to keep the installation cost as low as possible, the gas-cleaning system was streamlined. All by-pass lines and goggle valves for bypass lines were eliminated from the system. A radical departure from the use of 8-in. tubes in the Cottrell-type precipitators was made by using 12-in. diameter tubes in a single compartment, the single compartment being divided into two units by a single partition wall in the top header. THE FURNACE PROPER A few of the characteristic points and dimensions of the furnace proper are: [Hearth diameter 26 ft. o in. Bosh diameter 29 ft. 1 3/4 in. Stock-line diameter 20 ft. o in. Large-bell diameter 114 ft. 8 in. Small-bell diameter 6 ft. 6 in. Height of furnace from center of iron notch to bottom of large bell, closed 94 ft. 4 in. Height of furnace from center of iron notch to main platform 105 ft. o in.] The furnace top is equipped with a McKee revolving distributor, the operation of which is electrically interlocked with the skips, bell hoists, and coke-weighing and charging apparatus through a Freyn automatic charging control. The gas leaves the furnace first through four offtakes, 5 ft. g in. in diameter, then through uptakes that are approximately 85 ft. high, which feed into a single down-comer that is 9 ft. in diameter. DUST CATCHER The primary dust catcher installed (Fig. I) may be described as a single-cone type. The inlet pipe at the top of the dust catcher is g ft. in diameter; it is flared to a conical shape as it extends down inside the dust-catcher shell, which is 35 ft. in diameter, 37 ft. high on the straight side, and has a conical top and bottom. The slope of the bottom is 50° with the horizontal. The cone-shaped pipe inside the dust-catcher shell is 42 ft. high and is 19 ft. 7 in. in diameter at its bottom lip where it releases the gas in-

IN its dual role of pig-iron smelter and gas producer, the blast furnace is a remarkably satisfactory and efficient apparatus. Many metallurgists and engineers have pointed out, however, that since the primary function of the blast furnace is to produce pig iron at the lowest possible cost, its function as a gas producer should be subordinated to this primary pur-pose. During the past 10 years or more, improvements in blast-furnace technique and economy have, in fact, been directed primarily to increasing efficiency in the use of the reducing power of the gases produced by com-bustion of coke at the tuyeres, to reduce iron ore within the furnace. The net over-all result is a decrease in the fuel value of the top gas per unit of volume, and per ton of pig iron, which is evidently more than offset in value by the corollary saving in coke and the possibility of increased furnace capacity, for otherwise there would be no point in making such improvements. The purpose of the present paper is to suggest that, while progress has been made in this direction, there is another approach to the problem of increasing the chemical and thermal efficiency of the blast furnace in its primary role as a pig-iron smelter, which appears to offer possibilities of improvement in over-all economy of a different order of magnitude than results thus far obtained by the use of other expedients. The present argument is based in large part upon the hypothesis that the effi-ciency and economics of pig-iron smelting are seriously and adversely affected by the phenomenon known as "solution loss," and that the problem of solution loss can be successfully attacked by increasing the over-all pressure; i.e., the "top pressure" under which the furnace is operated. It is indicated that pressure operation may also be expected to result in concomitant benefits, which may be summed up as generally improved operating conditions, together with a substantial saving in fuel and/or a substantial increase in furnace capacity.

DURING the past few years a radically new process for the magnetic roasting of iron ores has been investigated and developed by Pickands Mather & Co. and the Erie Mining Co. in the Erie laboratory at Hibbing, Minn. This process, originally devised by Dr. P. H. Royster of Washington, D. C., involves the use of a roasting technique quite different from older methods. It has now been demonstrated that iron-bearing materials can be roasted as effectively as by any previously known method, and at a much lower cost. The increasing shortage of highgrade iron ores in this country has accelerated the search for new methods that would permit low grade materials to be utilized. The concept of magnetically roasting low grade nonmagnetic ores such as the oxidized taconites and then separating such material magnetically has always had considerable appeal. The magnetic concentration idea is attractive because of the sharpness of the separations and cheapness of the method. Heretofore, however, the equipment and the processes available for the magnetizing-roasting -step have left much to be desired. The customary equipment available for reduction roasting has been: 1-multiple hearth furnaces, 2-rotary kilns, and 3-shaft type kilns. In addition, it is understood that some work has been done in magnetically roasting fine ores by a process using the FluoSolids principle, but little information on this process is available. The multiple hearth kiln has been used the most but first costs and operating costs have been high because of low capacity, high maintenance, and poor gas utilization. Magnetic roasting can be done in a rotary kiln, but the radiation losses are high and the conversion to magnetite is usually unsatisfactory because of poor contact between the gases and the solids. Of the shaft-type furnaces, probably the most efficient yet developed is that designed by E. W. Davis of the Minnesota Mines Experiment Station. This furnace was operated at Cooley, Minn., during 1934-1937 but was abandoned in 1937 because the operation was uneconomic. Heretofore the basic concept behind most magnetic roasting processes has been the idea of heating iron ore to a temperature of 800° to 1100 °F in a strong reducing atmosphere, preferably either carbon monoxide or hydrogen. Temperatures under 800°F were undesirable since excessive roasting time was required. Temperatures over 1100°F were avoided because of the danger of converting part of the iron to ferrous oxide which is nonmagnetic. In the new roasting process, the operation is carried on in a shaft furnace using a controlled atmosphere containing a low percentage of reducing gas. The temperature in the roasting zone is considerably higher than with the usual reducing gas and this speeds up the reduction time. Portions of the spent furnace gases are cooled and recirculated and this together with the good contact between ore and gas makes for high reducing gas utilization. High heat economy is secured by recuperating heat from the roasted ore by passing the cold reducing gases countercurrent to flow of ore. The heat transfer principle is similar to that employed in a pebble stove and to that used in the Erie Mining Co. furnace at Aurora, Minn., for pelletizing fine magnetite concentrates derived from taconite. The theory of controlled atmosphere during the roasting operation can best be appreciated by inspecting the equilibrium diagram of the Fe-C-O system shown in Fig. 1. An inspection of this diagram shows that in certain areas magnetite, Fe3O4, is the only stable form of iron. A further inspection of this table shows that if the proper ratio is maintained between carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, such a gas will be reducing with respect to hematite, Fe2O3, and will be oxidizing with respect to both ferrous oxide, FeO, and iron, Fe. It should be kept in mind that the formation of ferrous oxide in a roasting operation is harmful, since this oxide is nonmagnetic; if it forms in any quantity, it will cause substantial loss of iron in the ensuing magnetic separation step. If a ratio of approximately three parts carbon dioxide to one of carbon monoxide is maintained, the resulting operation can be carried on at a relatively high temperature without fear of over-reduction. Specifically, most of the tests in the Erie furnace have been made at a temperature of 1500° to 1600°F, with an entrant gas containing approximately 5 pct carbon monoxide and 15 pct carbon dioxide, with the remainder largely nitrogen. It should be remembered that the ratios of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide shown in Fig. 1 hold even though the bulk of the gas is an inert gas such as nitrogen. It may surprise many to learn that a gas containing as low as 3 pct carbon monoxide, and 12 pct carbon dioxide with the remainder nitrogen is an extremely effective reducing gas in the 1000° to 1600°F temperature range. The reducing gas is not limited to carbon monoxide, and mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide may be used effectively, provided that a similar ratio is maintained between the reducing gases and carbon dioxide and water vapor. For a more detailed explanation of the theory involved, the reader is referred to U. S. patents 2,528,552 and 2,528,553. From a safety standpoint, the weak reducing gas used in the furnace offers an advantage. Its composition is such that it is well below the limits of explosion should air enter a hot furnace. This condition is not true with the usual reducing furnace, in which a gas rich in carbon monoxide or hydrogen is used. High-purity dense tungsten coating is obtained by means of a modified de Boer-van Arkel iodide process using tungsten bromides. The all-glass reaction system is pumped, baked, and sealed (pinched-off) at about 10-7 mm Hg pressure. The bromides then formed in situ are decomposed, depositing tungsten on heated tungsten surfaces. Heating of the specimen is done inductively in a novel arrangement that avoids electrodes of glass-to-metal seals. The tungsten, deposited at specimen temperatures from 2000° to 2800°F and bulb (halide) temperatures of 225" to 725°F, was adherent and uniform, and ranged in thickness to 1/8-in. REFRACTORY metals are of interest at NASA for use in hypersonic aircraft, in rocket engines, and in other thrust devices where very high temperatures are encountered. Tungsten, with a melting point about 6100° F, is potentially very useful for some of these applications. Considerable research on tungsten and its alloys is currently being conducted at the NASA Lewis Research Center. In this tungsten research program, there is need for a method of depositing high-purity, nonporous tungsten coatirlgs. Metallurgical bonding of the coating both to itself and to the substrate is required. In addition, it is necessary to be able to deposit thin, uniform coatings on substrates of a variety of shapes and sizes for laboratory test purposes. A survey of the methods previously used for depositing tungsten coatings indicated that none would likely meet these requirements for high purity, good uniformity, and high density except thermal decomposition of the halides. The method for coating that was selected for investigation was the thermal decomposition of tungsten bromide. This is a variation of the van Arkel and de Boer iodide process established years ago and recently reviewed.1,2 This process is applicable to the transition metals in general. More recently, the application and techniques were extended with chlorine3 and fluorine,4 and included the coating of tungsten. This is believed to be the first report on the use of the bromide for tungsten coating. Bromine was chosen over the other halogens because it promised a lower temperature for tungsten

IT is not necessary to enter into a long discussion of ordinary bells, because every master carpenter or blacksmith knows how to make those levers with a crossbar that are called storks. This is nothing other than a board that has a thick and heavy head and looks more like a dolphin than a bird. This has a long tail in the form of a handle so that it makes a more powerful lever. As can be seen in every bell tower and other place where there are bells, it has, crosswise above the point where the cannon of the bell is fitted and fastened in, an iron bar which is arched and which has its two ends turned horizontally. The oxidation of metals melted in contact with air takes place with dissimilar results. Tin, lead or zinc are examples of a class, the oxides of which float on the surface of the melted metal. First a film is produced, which covers the surface; then, if agitation from any cause exposes new metal to the action of the air, additional oxidation takes place, and the film is increased in volume. This change goes on until a considerable quantity of oxide (or " dross," as it is technically called) is formed; depending, of course, upon the duration of the exposure of the metal to the atmosphere. When such metals are poured, the dross may be skimmed off; and clean metal will be left underneath. The removal of such oxides is, therefore, merely a mechanical process. In the case of copper, however, the result is quite different. The sub-oxide of copper (Cu2O) is readily soluble in molten copper; and therefore, instead of the formation of a film of oxide, to be finally removed as dross, the surface of the metal remains bright and clear, because the oxide has been dissolved as soon as it was produced. It is customary in the process of copper-refining to leave a small quantity of oxide in the metal, in order to oxidize any traces of bismuth, arsenic or antimony which have not been entirely removed. A knowledge of the principles of punctuation is essential to effective and intelligible writing, for the ease and pleasure of the reader, and even his understanding, may depend upon the choice and the placing of punctuation marks. To 'punctuate' is to mark with stops or points; the word comes from the medieval Latin punctuare (punctuatus), which in turn is derived from the Latin punctum, a point. The purpose of punctuation is to show the manner in which the writing is to be understood; to indicate the relations between parts of a sentence and between successive sentences. To some extent "it does for the eye what vocal stress does for the ear", but especially it marks logical relations. Some punctuation marks, such as those indicating admiration, exclamation, and interrogation, are rhetorical as well as grammatical, but most of the common ones are logical or grammatical. My discussion will be confined to grammatical punctuation in ordinary writing. "The problem of punctuation in text matter", as George Summey * says, "is to employ words, points, and paragraph breaks in such a way as to achieve at the same time clearness, proper distribution of emphasis, and the desired kind of movement." The criticism of the punctuation of a sentence or of a group of sentences is not final until the context, within the paragraph, is read. NDUSTRY needs a generally applicable means of defining average grain size and grain size distribution. Students of sediments hade explored this field, employing methods that might also prove useful in engineering problems. Before attempting to solve specific problems it is well to review the derivation of commonly used grade scales and the reasons for their selection. This aspect of the problem seems largely to have been lost, and a review of basic factors may suggest causes for failures in using size analysis data. Three facts are implicit in selection of a grade scale: 1) Most particulate mixtures are continuous distributions of sizes, and any grade scale that may be employed is an arbitrary means of visualizing that distribution. 2) For purely descriptive purposes, any grade scale, regardless of the rationality of the class intervals, will be satisfactory if it is accepted by a sufficient number of workers. 3) For analytical purposes, class intervals must be small enough to define the continuous distribution accurately. Further, where statistical studies are involved, a fixed relationship should exist between classes or grades. An argument in favor of geometrically related size grades lies in the fact that most particulate mixtures contain such a wide range of sizes that use of an arithmetic diameter scale is practically impossible. Udden, who recognized this fact in 1898,' proposed one of the first grade scales based on a regular geometrical interval. Udden used 1 mm as his basic diameter and a ratio of 2 (or 1/2) between classes. In 1922 Wentworth2 re-examined Udden's grade scale, retaining the same class interval and basic diameter, but extending the scale in both directions and renaming the classes. In 1930 (Ref. 3, p. 82) the American Society of Testing Materials proposed what is now known as the U.S. Standard fine sieve series, also based on the 1 mm diam, with a v2 ratio between sieves. This, then, is a one fourth Udden-Wentworth series in the sizes below the 4 mesh sieve. The U.S. Standard coarse sieve departs from the 1 mm base and uses inches; hence it is not a direct continuation of the fine series. The U.S. Standard series would thus seem to possess all the attributes of a good grade scale, which it is. It has a large number of classes (sieves). in fact too many for practical use in its entirety. This v2 subdivision of the Wentworth grades has led to the common use of two v2 sieve series, the half-Wentworth and the engineers' series. Geologists and sedimentologists favor the half Wentworth, or 18, 25, 35, 45 sieves, etc., whereas the engineers, preferring round numbers, utilize the other half of the U.S. Standard grade scale in the 16, 20, 30, 40 sieves, etc. The fixed geometrical ratio between classes is an advantage in statistical analysis, but the unequal classes cause some complications in calculations. This is especially true when moment measures are used. It was to simplify these calculations that Krumbein in 1934 devised the phi scale. Phi is defined as being equal to —log2 of the diameter in millimeters. Selection of logarithms to the base 2 relate the phi scale directly to the Wentworth grade scale in such a manner that the whole or fractional diameter values 2, 1, 1/2, 1/4 mm, etc., become rational whole numbers, —1, 0,1, 2, etc. Since this is an arithmetic rather than geometric series, calculations are facilitated. When the logarithm is multiplied by —1 the phi values below 1 mm become positive, those coarser than 1 mm negative. Because of its relationship to the Wentworth grade scale (and in turn to the U.S. Standard fine sieve series) it is not necessary to use the transformation equation to calculate the phi value for each individual sieve; this can be done graphically as shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that this graph may be extended in either direction to include the range of sizes most commonly used by the individual worker. Application to Statistical Analysis Any attempt at systematically relating size analysis data to properties involves a statistical study whether it is recognized as such or not. Since this is true it would seem more logical to use measures and devices related to the general body of statistical theory. Several methods are available for studying particulate mixtures. One of the most commonly employed, and also the most often misused, is the histogram or block diagram. If its limitations are recognized and provided for, the histogram is a very useful tool. According to conventional practice, the bars of equal width are plotted and the values noted in terms of diameters, when in point of fact, log diameter is implied by such notation. Further, the histogram is sensitive to choice of grade scale and size of class interval, either of which may color the result. Grade scales whose classes are not related by fixed intervals are particularly difficult. Another basic weakness of the histogram is that it pictures a continuous distribution as a series of discrete grades.

A simple correlation is presented for the prediction of saturation pressures in condensate-gas and volatile-oil mixtures. Saturation pressure is related directly to the composition of the mixture with the aid of two generalized composition characteristics, B, the molal average boiling point, and W, the modified weight average equivalent molecular weight. The need for hydrocarbon equilibrium constants is entirely eliminated. Only the values of the two conlposition parameters need be obtained, and these are calculated in a simple and reproducible manner from the stream analysis of the mixture and the ASTM distillation for the heavy ends. The correlation is given .in the form of a set of 14 working charts in which saturation pressures, either retrograde dew points or bubble points, are plotted cs temperature, forming partial phase envelopes for mixtures having discrete values of the composition parameters, B and Wul. A locus of critical states on each chart intersects the partial phase envelopes, distinguishing retrograde dew point pressures from bubble pressures. A comparison Between experimental and predicted saturation pressures reveals that: the probable error of the predicted values, when considering the data as a whole (214 experimental points), is five per cent; for high gasjoil ratio condensate fluids (approximately 40.000 or more cu ft/bbl) the probable error is about 8 per cent. In either case, however, the probable error is comparable with the overall uncertainty of the data from which the correlation is derived. INTRODUCTION There is a present need for a simplified, yet reasonably accurate method for predicting upper phase boundaries of reservoir fluids. In the case of high gas/oil ratio fluids, namely the so-called highly volatile oils and the condensate gases, no simple method, accurate within 5 to 10 per cent, is now available by which bubble point and retrograde dew point pressures may be predicted. In order to calculate the upper phase boundary of a volatile reservoir fluid, using correlations now available, it is necessary to find and employ the proper K-values (equilibrium volatility ratios of the hydrocarbons in that fluid). This process of finding the Proper K-values usually involves a double trial and error computation. Since the K-values are in themselves dependent upon the composition of the fluid, their use in the calculation of a saturation pressure actually represents an unnecessary complication. The correlation described in this paper relates saturation pressure directly to the stream composition, entirely eliminating the need for K-values. The only data required to calculate the Stream composition are obtained from the customary low temperature fractional analyses of separator gas and liquidt and from the ASTM distillation of the c,+ fraction of the separator liquid. A considerable simplification in the procedure for predicting saturation pressures is thereby effected without significant loss in accuracy. BASIS FOR A CORRELATION Empirical relationships between the saturation pressure and the composition of the fluid in question have already been partially explored by one of the authors.V n particular, a relationship between the critical pressure for a hydrocarbon mixture and its composition was developed. The critical pressure is in reality a saturation pressure, as it repregents a limiting case either of a dew point or of a buhhle point pressure for any given mixture. It was found that the critical pressure may be correlated as a function of two generalized composition characteristics or variables. DIE castings may be defined as metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into a metallic mold or die. It is necessary to keep this definition in mind to avoid confusing this process with other permanent-mold casting processes. The fundamental principles of the process have been known and practised many years. The simplest application is embodied in the modern linotype machine in which molten metal (usually tin-lead alloy) is forced under pressure into a metallic mold. The pressure is derived from a piston and cylinder immersed in the molten metal. Progress in the art of die casting may conveniently be divided into threee groups: Machine for imparting pressure to the metal, material for the die or mold, casting alloys. CASTING MACHINES The problem of delivering molten metal under pressure into a die is comparatively simple, when dealing with low-fusing-point alloys, as the alloys of lead and tin, but it is much more complicated when dealing with metals of higher fusing points, such as the alloys of zinc, aluminum, and copper. Although the art of die casting is comparatively new and, to a large extent, unknown, the records of the patent office are replete with patents on the subject. Fig. 1 shows the Underwood machine patented in 1902; this is probably one of the first machines designed for the production of commercial die castings. The relation of this machine to the linotype casting machine is clearly. apparent. A cylinder and piston are immersed in the molten metal, the application of power to this piston forcing the molten metal, under pressure, into the mold or die. The Doehler machine, Fig. 2, patented in 1907, is based on the same general principles. This machine is used to a large extent at the present time, throughout the United States, for the production of zinc, tin, and lead alloy die castings.

This paper presents theory which is used to predict rock-bit bearing life reduction due to simple harmonic variations in bit forces. The theory is based on the premise that if a constant load acts for a certain fraction of the life which the bearing would have if that constant load were applied for its entire life, then the same fraction of thelife of the bearing is consumed. Total bearing life is related to simple harmonic variations in bearing life associated with instantaneous bearing loads. The results show that rock bit bearing life is not affected appreciably by forces commonly impressed upon a bit, but it is affecied appreciably by relatively large dynamic bit forces occasionally encountered during drilling. In addition, the results show that the life of sealed bearings is more sensitive to bit force variations than is the life of unsealed bearings. INTRODUCTION Roller bearings are important components in roller cone rock bits because they transmit a large portion of the drill collar weight to the formation being drilled. Unfortunately, they have a relatively short life under down-hole drilling conditions. Roller bearings are usually the first bit components to fail, and their failure leads immediately to failure of the entire bit. Short roller bearing life, and thus short bit life, is due mainly to high unit loads transmitted by the bit and to the adverse environment in which the bearings operate. The results of the study discussed in this report show how dynamic bit forces also affect roller bearing life. The purpose of this paper is to discuss theory developed to predict the effect of different magnitudes of periodic bit forces on roller bearing life. Theoretical results are used to compare the life of rock bit roller bearings subjected to steady forces to the life of rock bit roller bearings subjected to unsteady forces similar to the type of unsteady forces measured at the bit with a special downhole recording instrument. BACKGROUND AIanufacturers of bearings have conducted laboratory tests which show how bearing life is affected by steady bearing load. 1 The well-known empirical equation which defines bearing life follows from bearing test data. It is: where L = bearing life, hr P = bearing load, Ib C = constant q = exponent (constant). The effect of environment on bearing performance is manifested through the exponent q and the constant, C. King,2 in similar tests conducted on roller bearings used in rock bits, showed that, in addition to the load, the environment (abrasive materials, chemical components, etc.) greatly affects bearing life. His data, which show how the life of roller bearings in a 7-7/8-in. W7R bit rotating at 60 rpm is affected by bit weight and fluid environment, are displayed on a log-log plot by broken lines made up of straight line segments. Each broken line corresponds to a given environment. One segment (q = 1.4) of the broken line corresponding to a fluid environment of barite mud is shown in Fig. 1 along
