The extractive metallurgy of primary aluminum from its ores is discussed with special attention to the production of alumina from high grade ores by the Bayer process, including differences between American and European practice and a brief description of some processes for lower grade ores and the electrolytic reduction of the oxide to aluminum. METALLIC aluminum is not found in nature, but the oxides, hydroxides, and especially the silicates are plentiful. The estimated percentage of in in the crust of the earth is about 8 pct while that of iron is about 5 pct. By far the larger portion of this is combined with silica in the form of various clay minerals and igneous silicate rocks. From the point of view of extractive metallurgy of aluminum, these are low grade ores while the better qualities of bauxite are the high grade ores. There have been various definitions of bauxite but perhaps the best definition at the present time is that bauxite is a rock or earth commonly used as an ore of aluminum or its salts in which the aluminum is present predominantly as a hydrate or a mixture of hydrates and hydrous oxides. It contains varying amounts of oxides of silicon, iron, and titanium and traces of compounds of some of the less common elements. The silica is mainly combined with alumina as clay or clay minerals which are hydrous aluminum silicates, although a part of it may be present as quartz sand. On the American continents, the alumina is mainly present as gibbsite, Al2O3 . 3H2O, and the same may be said of the best known deposits of the Dutch East Indies and some of the deposits in India. In France and other countries in Europe as well as in Africa, the alumina is present mainly as boeh-mite, A12O3 . H2O, but in some of these deposits it is mixed with minor amounts of gibbsite. Some other deposits, such as those in the islands of Haiti and Jamaica, evidently contain two or more hydrates or hydrous oxides of alumina in varying proportions. Perhaps the main portion of the alumina may be present as gibbsite and boehmite with the proportion between the two varying rather widely. In the silicate minerals, including clay, the alumina is chemically combined with silica and has not been separated satisfactorily by mechanical or physical ore-dressing methods. Low grade bauxites are mixtures of hydrates, usually gibbsite or boehmite, with clay, iron oxides, etc. In some low grade bauxites, it is possible to separate a portion of the gibbsite or boehmite, which may be present as relatively hard and coarse particles, from soft or finely divided clay minerals by log washing or similar methods. This has been applied to the product of some mines or parts of them, but on other ores it is not applicable. In some cases the gibbsite or boehmite is almost as fine and soft and of nearly the same specific gravity as the clay minerals so that washing and gravity separations are not successful. The iron oxide, the clay minerals, and a part of the titanium minerals are often so finely dispersed in the ore that any of the physical mineral separation methods, including separations by gravity, particle size, flotation, and electrostatic or magnetic separation, have not been commercially SUCCESSFUL except on relatively small lots of ore. For these reasons, the only available methods of separation on the general run of ores have been methods which would be classed as chemical rather than physical or mechanical separations. Aluminum oxide can be reduced by carbon at temperatures above 1800°C to form metallic aluminum and aluminum carbide or nitride. The temperature for rapid reduction of aluminum oxide to metallic aluminum is about the boiling point of aluminum and above the temperatures necessary to reduce iron, silicon, and titanium so that the direct reduction of an aluminum ore with carbon will produce an alloy of aluminum, iron, titanium, silicon, etc., which may be mixed with carbides and nitrides. Also a large amount of the reduced aluminum may be lost as a vapor except in the presence of some alloying agent such as copper or other metals. While it is possible to refine such alloys or mixtures so as to produce commercially pure aluminum, the methods which have been found are too expensive for the present market. Within the past few years, particularly because of the rapid growth of the airplane industry during the war, considerable attention has been paid to the manufacture of light-wall cold-drawn seamless and welded steel tubing for structural purposes. While the manufacture of such tubing is not, in itself, a difficult matter, some difficulties have been encountered in producing the same under specifications requiring definite physical properties. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods of manufacture and the properties that may be obtained by such methods for tubing coming within about 1/2 to 2 in. (12.7 to 50.8 mm.) outside diameter and 10 to 22 Birmingham wire gage (0.134 to 0.028 in. wall thickness). Such tubing is largely used as structural material in the aircraft industry, and it is of the utmost importance that the physical and chemical properties should be known, and also that the various factors entering into the manufacture should be under such control as to allow these properties to be varied and held within definite limits. In general, tubing may be divided into four classes: namely, specialty tubing, such as riveted-sheet or plate, lock jointed, etc.; brazed tubing; welded tubing; and seamless tubing. Welded tubing may be divided into hot product, such as lap welded and butt welded, and cold product, such as acetylene and electric welded. Seamless tubing may be hot rolled or cold drawn. Specialty Tubing The first two classes present mainly mechanical or structural engineering problems. A simple form of tube is made by riveting together the overlapping edges of rolled sheets or plates formed into a cylinder. Because of the nature of its construction, such a tube is necessarily limited to relatively large sizes. Lock-jointed tubing is produced by passing low-carbon strip through a forming machine having suitable rolls and dies, its manufacture is almost entirely a question of design of the forming machine and its satisfactory operation. The chief application of such tubing is in the manufacture of bedsteads.

1 1.4-1. Source of Water. Precipitation in the form of rain or snow is the original source of water that enters most surface mines. The precipitation, which does not escape to the atmosphere, either becomes surface run- off or infiltrates into the ground to become ground water (3,4). Evaporation and surface run-off can be measured. The water that infiltrates the ground disappears from view and is more difficult to evaluate. In general, it moves in a pattern similar to the surface run-off, but at a much slower rate, since its progress is impeded by many subsurface conditions. The infiltrating water descends through the soil and rock by whatever passageways permit flow until the water table or top of the zone of saturation is reached. Though usually pictured as a level surface, it is dependent upon the topography and the permeability of the enclosing material, and therefore it can be as erratic and unpredictable as the subsurface geology. Ground water may become surface run-off again at a lower point, and likewise, surface run-off of lakes and streams can infiltrate to become ground water. Should the ground water be confined to a permeable zone overlain by an impermeable barrier, a pressure is created. Such water is said to be artesian if the pressure head is sufficient to raise the confined water to the surface. These conditions are more commonly found in relatively flat-lying bedded formations. 11.4-2. Recognition and Estimation of Water. Dewatering and flood control should be considered by the design engineer at an early stage in all surface mine planning. Recognition of the possible problems, and making allowance for their solution, is an inexpensive precaution. Circumstances which should lead to investigation are: 1. High rainfall 2. Experience of other mines in the area 3. Evidence of water and caving in drill holes 4. Presence of springs and artesian wells 5. Geological evidence of aquifers.

Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." Indeed, from articles published by geostatisticians in the 1960s one could infer that geostatistical methods are not compatible with the presence of trends. However, even the simplest

The thermodynamics of the set of functions including the activation enthalpy. the activation free energy, and the activation entropy for the motion of dislocations at low temperatures is formulated without a specific model or a mechanism. The behniiior near absolute zero of all these functions and of other relevant quantities related to dislocation mobility Is examined in the light of the third law of thermodynamics. The velocity measurements of Stein and Low for edge dislocations in Si-Fe are used .for illustrotion. In the plastic deformation of crystalline materials, a fundamental assumption, which is supported by direct measurements using etch-pit techniques,'-4 is that the average velocity of a certain mobile dislocation is a single-valued function of temperature and the effective shear stress exerted on the mobile dislocation: Sometimes under certain assumptions, even without direct dislocation-velocity measurements, an activation volume can be obtained from a change in strain rate in a simple tension test. Similarly an ac tivation enthalpy can be obtained by changing the temperature in a creep test. However, the assumptions involved should be studied carefully before using the results of these tests. Consider, for example, a tensile specimen at some stage of deformation with a distribution of mobile dislocations. Let the total length of dislocations of type i be pi per unit volume. The purpose of this research is to determine (I) the efficiency of small banks of enriched gar driven by methane in displacing oil from a porous medium and (2) the effects of variation in bank size and composition of that efficiency. Most of the experiments were conducted in a sand-packed tube 20-ft long and 1/2-in. in diameter. The hydrocarbon system generally used was methane, butane and decane at 2,500 psia and 160°F. The results of these experiments indicate that, in the regions contacted by the gas, a small bank of an oil-miscible gas driven by methane can displace all of the oil in a piston-like manner. If the enriched gas is of such composition as to remain immiscible with the oil, displacement of oil is less efficient than for the miscible case, and the gas bank travels through the sand with a velocity less than that of the driving gas. These data along with theories discussed imply that smaller banks and less total gas are required when the enriched gas and oil are miscible. INTRODUCTION Widespread application of enriched-gas drive to the recovery of oil rests upon a key factor — the use of limited quantities, or "banks", of enriched gas. At the present time, the value of liquefied petroleum gas or other enriching agents discourages their use in a continuous injection technique, or even in a large bank, except in a few isolated reservoirs. If small banks of enriched gas driven by methane were as effective in displacing oil as is continuous injection, the enriched-gas drive process might be applied to a larger number of reservoirs. Previous research on the mechanics of the enriched-gas drive process reported by Stone and Crurnpl and by Kehn, Pyndus and Gaskell has utilized continuous injection of enriched gas. This work has shown that two types of displacements occur. With gases containing sufficient intermediates. the oil is displaced misciblv and complete recovery is obtained from the regions swept. When gases are used which contain insufficient intermediate hydrocarbon for miscible displacement, oil is displaced immiscibly. In the latter type, selective solution of the intermediate hydrocarbons causes a swelling and reduction in viscosity of the oil and leads to an increased recovery over that obtained by dry-gas (methane) drive. The size of the enriched-gas bank necessary for efficient displacement of oil is determined by those factors which cause deterioration of the bank. A differentiation may be made between those factors which operate on a microscopic scale and those which act on a macroscopic scale. On the smaller scale, the enriched gas mixes in the direction of flow by diffusion and convection with the fluids immediately preceding and following it. On the larger scale, the gas may by-pass the oil by flowing through permeable streaks, by overriding the oil because of density difference, or by fingering because of unfavorable viscosity ratios. In such cases, the enriching material tends to mix with the oil both laterally and in the direction of flow. The increase in effective area available for diffusion and dispersion of the enriching components leads to a faster degradation of the bank and a need for a larger bank than is necessary for those cases in which no by-passing occurs. The effects of such macroscopic factors in the deterioration of enriched-gas banks have been reported in a separate paper by Blackwell, Terry and Rayne. The present study was confined to the factors which operate on the smaller scale, in particular to the behavior of banks of enriched gas in sands uniformly swept by the gas. Experiments were designed to answer the following questions. 1. Can small banks of enriched gas driven by methane be used to secure oil recoveries comparable to those obtained by continuous injection of enriched gas? 2. What is the optimum bank size (the minimum bank size necessary to obtain a recovery comparable to that obtained by continuous injection of the same enriched gas)? 3. How many total pore volumes of gas must be injected to obtain the maximum recovery when the optimum bank size is used? 4. What is the effect of varying the number of enriching components in a gas bank? This report describes the experimental investigations and discusses the results in terms of their significance to reservoir behavior.

The results are obtained pic-torially, and by simple measurements and calculations the percentage of recovery is obtained qualitatively as a function of the total input. Introduction The increased demand for petroleum products, together with the decline in discovery rate and the higher cost of recovery as deeper formations are brought into production, has stimulated interest in methods for studying and predicting efficiencies of various production programs. Among methods Of recovery that have become of increased significance recently are gas recycling in condensate fields and secondary recovery by water-flooding. The electrolytic model is a useful device for studying such methods in the laboratory, at least in a qualitative way. The original experiments with electrolytic models and the development of their application to the study of secondary reCoverY problems were published in 1933. 1,2,3 Subsequently other investigators continued the development and modification of the bait method, with resultant improvements and extension of its applications.4-7 The method and equipment to be described here are thought to represent still further improvement in the results obtainable, with increased validity in their application to field problems. Sand OF Principles of Operation The underlying theory of the operation of the model is given in references I, 2 and 3. However, a brief statement of principles involved is given herewith. The applicability of the model is based on the fact that Ohm's law and d'Arcy's law are exactly analogous; whence, electrical flow through a conducting medium may be used to simulate homogeneous fluid flow through a permeable medium. If two electrodes are placed in a conducting (ionized) solution and connected to the positive and negative terminals of a source of direct current, the positive ions of the solution will move toward the negative terminal, Since the velocity of an ion in an electrolytic medium is proportional to the electrical gradient, just as the velocity of a fluid particle in a porous medium is proportional to the pressure gradient, the motion of the ions in the potential field will be the same as the motion of fluid particles in a porous medium if the positive and negative terminals (input and output wells) and boundary conditions are made equivalent in shape and distribution. HAND picking was the earliest form of coal preparation, first practiced to improve the outward appearance of the coal being loaded and to remove any pieces that might appear objection- able to the buyer. It is still extensively practiced on the plus 1-in. sizes, and particularly on the plus 4-in. and larger sizes. The percentage of ash reduction that can be obtained by hand picking depends entirely upon the amount of free impurity occurring in the coal. In a particularly dirty seam, where a considerable quantity of rock occurs with the coal as mined, hand picking produces sizable reductions in ash. If the coal is prepared clean at the working face hand picking is a final check; in some cases, on the smaller sizes, it is practiced only to show that an effort is being made to prepare a clean product. Because of the variety and different methods of handling coal, the early plants were not always adapted for efficient hand picking. At most mines an attempt is made to remove the visual impurities at one or more of the following places in the surface plant:2 (1) in the tipple during screening; (2) on picking band, belt, or shaking conveyors;. (3) during the loading of the coal as it goes into the railroad car. Whatever the physical arrangements of the plant may be, the usual practice is to run the coal over the screen, picking table or boom at such a rate that each-piece of impurity is exposed to the view of the picker. Coal should be uniformly sized and spread out on the table so as not to exceed one particle in depth. The flow should be even in tonnage and the speed of travel should be from 30 to 60 ft. per minute and not 'exceed 80 ft. per minute. The dirtier the coal, the slower the speed required for a fixed number of pickers. Actually, picking capacity depends on the number of particles per minute that can be picked out and-rejected. The percentage of impurity removed is determined by this and the average weight of piece rejected. Handling a mixture of sizes from nut to the largest lump over the same picking table or conveyor is not conducive to efficient separation by hand picking because the lump hides the smaller impurities. Picking tables should not exceed 5 ft, in width, so that a picker on either side will be able to remove impurities from the center of

* A complete magnetic picture of the Mesabi range is now available for the first time with the release of 21 additional maps based on the aeromagnetic survey of 30,000 square miles made jointly by the USGS and the Minnesota Geological Survey. A potential iron formation with a magnetic pattern remarkably like that of the Mesabi iron range lies buried beneath the glacial drift in a wide belt extending some 30 miles across the northwest corner of Itasca County in north central Minnesota. Identification of three new uranium minerals by the USGS was recently announced. The new minerals, andersonite, swartzite, and bayleyite are, respectively, hydrous uranyl carbonates of magnesium, of sodium and calcium, and of calcium and magnesium. They were first observed by Charles A. Anderson, Survey geologist, in a coating on gypsum on the 300-ft level of the Hillside mine, Yavapai County, Arizona. International Minerals and Chemical Corp. has announced a $4,000,000 expansion and development program in the Polk County phosphate fields in Florida, Plants for the manufacture of multiple superphosphate and phosphate chemicals including dicalcium p osphate for animal feed and chemical purposes, and a sulphuric acid are planned. Office building, machine shop, warehouse, and laboratory are also scheduled for erection. A new type of tramp iron detector is being used on the conveyor belt feeder at the South Agnew stripping operation. It is made of an alloy of aluminum, nickel and cobalt and does not have any electric coils. The alloy, known as Alnico, is remarkable for the permanence and intensity of the magnetism which it retains. The detector was made by Dings Magnetic Separator Co. and it is probable that Alnico will be used in magnetic separators. The American Society of Engineering Education estimates that unless the percentage of high school graduates entering engineering colleges is increased, there is a strong possibility that instead of a large surplus of engineering graduates, which has been propehsied rather widely, there will soon be fewer engineering graduates available than are needed annually by our national economy. This conclusion is reached from a survey that shows that engineering enrollments are only slightly higher than prewar whereas industrial expansion is increasing the need for engineers. * The natural resources of Korea are being investigated under ECA sponsorship. E.J. Longyear has just embarked 8 crews for that country; two drills are scheduled for base metal search while six are slated for development of coal reserves. An innovation in the development work in the iron country has been the adoption of the Drill-Mobile, jumbo-mounted drills on rubber-tired carriage, by Cleveland-Cliffs at the Mather A and B mines. The machine is being used to cut stations in the new Mathed B shaft and for driving development headings at the Mather A.

It is a time-honored saying in the anthracite region that " under the conglomerate there is no coal;" and the adage is generally reckoned a sure guide in coal-exploration. Yet there are many places where conglomerate, even coarse conglomerate, occurs above important coal beds, and, among others, above the great Mammoth bed. One of the most striking of such occurrences is on the Shippen and Wetherill tract, half a dozen miles west of Tamaqua; and it illustrates remarkably the disastrous effect of a too unquestioning blind confidence in the sweeping literal truth of a broad generalization. Here there is a conspicuous crag formed by a twenty-foot bed of egg-conglomerate, dipping 60 degrees southerly, and jutting out boldly at the western end of a hill, where it is cut through by the small stream of Little Creek. The hill runs eastward for half a mile, with occasional exposures of pebbly rock along the western half of the crest. Eastward from the exposures lies the old Kentucky Bank mine, abandoned thirty years ago, where the Mammoth bed was worked down to water-level through a space of a mile and a quarter westward from the Palmer tunnel to the very edge of the

As you are no doubt aware, virgin copper, tin and zinc are strategic metals today and little, if any, is available in the manufacture of brass and bronze ingots. The source of alloys used in the manufacture of implements of war are, therefore, from ingots made almost exclusively from the refining of available scrap. It is amusing to hear of the unusual physical properties of various alloys because they mean nothing unless the foundryman is able to produce good sound castings. A discussion therefore means little unless something is said about the relative foundry practice of the various brass and bronze alloys. Among the factors that influence the quality of castings produced are: (I) improper gating, (2) wrong pouring temperatures, (3) poor sand conditions, (4) bad melting practice, (5) faulty pattern equipment, (6) metal. It seems to be the consensus of opinion that about 95 per cent of defective castings can be attributed to the first three causes. Metal while a source of trouble at times, is probably the least responsible for foundry difficulties. As you all know, a molder never makes a bad mold. His first thought is to blame the "damn" metal as this is the path of least resistance. Let's consider the "damn" metal and how it is made. In the manufacture of ingot, scrap is collected at various sources and is shipped to the refiner either directly or through the scrap dealer or broker. It is usually sorted, although not always. In working toward a specified chemical analysis, weighed amounts of various grades of scrap metals are melted, and then oxidized by blowing air through the molten bath to rid the metal of detrimental impurities or reduce them to within specification limits after which they are skimmed off with the aid of some added fluxes. The bath of metal is then poled with wood, chemically tested before and after additions are made to bring it up to required specifications, and finally poured into ingots, after which a final chemical and physical examination is made. As mentioned above, the impurities have either been eliminated or reduced to the point where they meet the specifications of all Government Agencies or Technical Societies. Therefore, why worry as to whether castings are to be made from strategic virgin metals or secondary ingots from available scrap. Tests have continuously been made and it is a proven fact that physical properties are no better from virgin metals than from secondary ingots of the same composition. It is definitely more fool-proof to make castings from secondary ingot than from virgin metals because if an error is made in weighing the copper, tin, lead or zinc of the latter, the analysis is off balance. If an error is made in weighing secondary ingots, you merely have more or less metal but the analysis remains constant. Furthermore, when pure copper is melted. it is susceptible to reducing gases as well as oxides. Secondary ingot is already alloyed with natural deoxidizers such as zinc, etc., and the volatilization of the latter also tends to eliminate reducing gases mechanically.

A bar of solder of a grade even as low as 30 per cent. tin and 70 per cent. lead, passed through a buffing machine, will show a surface practically identical with that of a bar of second-quality or reclaimed tin. The buffings, on chemical analysis, will prove to be almost pure lead. According to the best practice, solder is made in the following manner. Virgin pig lead is first melted, and when it is thoroughly liquefied, virgin pig tin is added, together with a small amount of flux; the latter is for the purpose of bringing to the surface the so-called "liver," consisting of impurities that may have remained in either the lead or the tin as a result of incomplete refining. The combined material, when completely liquid, is thoroughly stirred for some hours, and is then cast into small pigs. Just before casting, and continuously during this operation, the molten metal yields dross, consisting largely of the oxides of lead and tin; this should be carefully skimmed off. After the pigs have cooled, they are taken to a smaller kettle, remelted, and cast into the desired shape for use; or if wires, ribbons, etc., are to be made, the solder is cast into slugs suitable for extrusion and rolling. During this second operation, the skimming of dross should be even more carefully done than at first. Hand mixing has proved to be the only reliable method for the production of the best quality of solder, irrespective of its percentages of lead and tin. The best quality of solder is not necessarily that which contains the highest percentage of tin, but rather is that composition which performs best on the required piece of work. In order to produce

The coal lands that the Nemacolin mine is to develop embrace over 8400 acres; the tract is oblong and its eastern edge is along the Monon-gahela river. As shown in Fig. 1, the mine is divided into two parts (the North mine and the South mine) by a 150-ft. barrier, which however, is cut through at intervals by haulageways. Each part is fed from seven main entries—a loaded track, an empty, a manway, and four return air courses. The loaded tracks converge at the shaft bottom but the empty roads maintain their identity throughout their length. With three intakes and four returns on either side, there is ample room for expansion of air and every facility for ventilating is provided. The four south air courses converge into two, crossing the shaft bottom, and then into one at the south side of the air shaft. OIL-WELL depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. (Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN the copper-mining district of northern Michigan a fair-sized mine usually operates two or more shafts along the strike of the lode, these shafts being usually at least 1,000 ft. apart. The tonnage to be hoisted from each shaft is large-from 13,000 to 25,000 tons per month. The hoisting-engines used are generally steam-driven, non-condensing, duplex engines with Corliss valves, supplied by steam from separate boiler-plants where the distance between shafts is great. In an attempt to centralize power-plants and secure central-station economies, the Winona Copper Co. installed an electric hoist of the Ilgner type, with Ward Leonard control. A brief description of this plant has already been published.1 The only point of variation from the simple Ilgner set lies in the connection of two generators to a single induction-motor by flexible couplings. These generators serve motors which operate hoisting-drums at separate shafts, viz., No. 4 shaft, Winona, and No. 1 shaft, King Philip. , The hoist for No. 4 shaft, is about 1,700 ft. from the power-plant, and in this building the motor-generator set is placed. No. 1 King Philip hoist is 1,500 ft. from the motor-generator set. The equipment of the motor-generator set is as follows: In the middle of the set is a 12-pole, 450-h-p., 600-rev. per min., 2,080-volt, three-phase, 60-cycle, variable-speed induction-motor, connected on each side to a 20-ton fly-wheel which is 10 ft. in diameter, and to a 6-pole, 170-kw, 575-volt, interpole, direct-current generator. On each side of the shaft is placed a separate exciter, which delivers current at 125 volts. In attempting to find a rapid and economical means for solving many of the subsurface problems that confront the highway engineer, the author for the past two years has utilized a Megger Ground Tester on resistivity surveys in conjunction with highway construction. Electrical surveys in connection with highway work are largely shallow depth surveys, thus differing from most other types of resistivity work. Consequently, the readings are affected by a great many qualifying factors such as the density and moisture content of the media under observation and the amount of weathering and leaching. In most cases the surface layer is decidedly heterogeneous in character, and, because of the great number of side hill cuts, the second layer, which in most cases is rock overlain by some sort of surface soil, silt, or debris, seldom lies in a horizontal position. Shallow strata, lacking homogeneity and not lying in a horizontal position, do not lend themselves readily to accurate theoretical interpretations, therefore the author has used empirical rules to a large extent in interpreting depth soundings. The following empirical rules of interpretation are surprisingly adequate for highway work, since much of the work is in the nature of reconnaissance surveying and the results are construed to be approximations. The writer is careful not to risk interpretation on some special feature of the curve, since such features are usually due to random errors or lack of homogeneity among the subsurface strata. Effect of Surface Medium A resistivity depth sounding taken to a depth of 200 or 300 ft. is not much affected by superficial conditions, but these conditions have a great effect in depth soundings to 25 or 30 ft. In shallow soundings the character of the surface medium has a very marked effect on the entire resistivity graph. Fig. 1 illustrates a very striking example. THE system of pitwork used with the Cornish pumping engine, and which, for want of a better name, we may call the Cornish system of pitwork, consists essentially of a series of plunger-pumps, situated one below the other, in a shaft or incline, the plungers being operated by a rod called the pitman or pump-rod, which must, therefore, extend from the motor at the surface to the lowest pump. The subject will be best understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which k may be taken as typical of the ordinary plunger-pump, in which S is the suction pipe, u, the lower valve situated in the H piece T; v, the upper valve situated in the valve-box O; I, the mounting-pipe or column through which the water is carried to the surface; L, the plunger-barrel, and P, the plunger working through the stuffing-box, and actuated by the branch rod r, which is attached to the main pump-rod, R. The action of the pump is as follows : On the ascent of the plunger, acting now by suction, the water flows from the reservoir through the valve u, into the barrel, L. On the descent of the plunger, the water is forced up through the valve, v, which acts merely as a check valve, into the pipe, I, through which it is, at each successive down-stroke of the plunger, forced upward until it reaches the next reservoir, from which it is taken by another similar pump, and so on until it reaches the surface or drain-tunnel. The pump is obviously only single-acting, i. e., it acts only during one-half of its entire stroke. The weight of water raised during the up-stroke of the plunger is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base is the area of the plunger and whose height is the mean distance between the plunger-face and the surface of water in the lower reservoir, a distance not usually exceeding 12 or 15 feet, and which obviously cannot under the most favorable circumstances, exceed 25 or 30 feet. The water forced up during the down-stroke is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base equals the area of the plunger and whose height equals the length of the mounting column above the mean position of the plunger-face, say from 150 to 300 feet. An apparatus for the determination of fluid-fluid interfacial tension by the pendant drop method has been constructed. The apparatus is refined beyond those previously described in that the samples are introduced into an evacuated windowed cell without contacting air or mercury. Interfacial tension data are reported for the water-methane system between 74 and 280°F and 15 and 15,000 psi. The variation of wettability of the stainless-steel dropper tip with pressure and temperature was observed incidentally to the measurements. INTRODUCTION The most refined previous apparatus --for the determination of fluid-fluid interfacial tension at reservoir conditions was built by Hauser and Michaels.' These authors used the pendant drop method, previously investigated by Andreas, Hauser, and Tucker.' Recently, Fordham3 has made the pendant drop method an absolute one by numerical integration of the differential equation of drop shape. It is necessary to know the difference in density of the two fluids and the acceleration due to gravity in order to evaluate the interfacial tension from measurements of drop dimensions. Contact angle is not involved in the measurements by this method. Some precise tests of the method have been made at atmospheric pressure and 77°F by Douglas," who found agreement with established values to within about 0.1 per cent for water and air, cyclohexane and air, benzene and air, and benzene and water. No values of interfacial tension from the recent pendant drop apparatusJ have been published by Hauser and Michaels. However, values for the water-benzene and water-decane systems are given in Michaels' thesis5 or Dressures from 15 .to 10,000 psi and temperatures from 73 to 268ºF. Some determinations on gas-oil and gas-water systems in the range of 15 to 4,000 psi and 78 to 178°F have been made by Hozott,' by the drop-volume method. The capillary rise method has been used to investigate the interfacial tension in gas-oil systems at 88°F to several thousand psi by Swartz.7 Other determinations in gas-oil systems at pressures under 1,000 psia have been made by Jones: and Beecher and Parkhurst.9 The scarcity of data for pressures above 5.000 psi is apparent. APPARATUS An assembly drawing of the working section of the interfacial tenqion apparatus is given in Fig. 2. 'The endanant drop (A) is housed in a pressure chamber having glass windows (B). An agitator (6) is provided. The metal parts of the apparatus coming into contact with the sample are made of AISI: Type 316 steel. Drain grooves are provided around the whdows so that the sample in contact with the O-rings is not returned to the working section when the pressure is reduced. A schematic arrangement of the apparatus is given in Fig. 3. The working section containing the pendant drop (A) is filled by samples from bombs (B) with the aid of the vacuum system (C). The O-ring sealed pistons (D) used to separate the sample from the hydraulic fluid are shown together with the pressure production and measurement system (E). A front view of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Most of the hydraulic system is at the top of the panel. The pump and displacement piston are at the lower right. The Variacs for the air bath heaters. the camera. and the vacuum gauge are a1so visible on the panel.
