With the exception of the United States and Russia, none of the leading world powers have within their boundaries the oil supplies needed to meet present peace-time requirements, and even in regard to the United States it is admitted by competent observers that the known oil reserves within the country are inadequate to meet demands for more than a comparatively few years. It follows, therefore, that the transportation of petroleum—almost entirely by tank steamers—from foreign fields to the main consuming centers is one of the most important factors affecting the present and future development of the oil industry. The world-wide distribution of petroleum is affected by numerous factors of which international politics is not the least important. The assurance of an ample supply of petroleum—one of the most essential munitions of war—is of paramount importance particularly to those countries subjected to the rivalries of powerful neighbors. And paralleling the importance of the control of an ample supply is that of its safe transportation from the fields to the consuming centers. To illustrate: France is dependent almost entirely on foreign sources for its petroleum requirements estimated at close to 100,000 bbl. daily, and in order to control such a supply after the World War it acquired an interest in the Iraq oil fields. Lately it has undertaken the construction of a pipe line from these fields to the Mediterranean seaboard in Syria with the expectation that late in 1934 these fields will supply between 30 and 40 per cent of the country's requirements. It should be noted, however, that the availability of this supply is entirely dependent on the safe operation in the Mediterranean at all times of an adequate fleet of tank steamers. Thus, in order to transport 40,000 bbl. daily, it will be necessary for one 10,000-ton tanker to leave Tripoli, the Syrian port, say for Marseille, every other day throughout the year while to meet the entire present peace requirements of France from the Iraq fields, a fleet of some 30 such tankers must be kept in continuous operation between Tripoli and Marseille.

The American Mining Congress, of which the President is Carl Scholz, and the Secretary is J. F. Callbreath, and of which many of the officers and directors are prominent in Institute affairs, has extended to the members of the Institute a cordial invitation to attend the nineteenth Annual Session of the Congress, to be held at the La Salle Hotel, Chicago, Nov. 13 to 16, 1916, and to take part in its deliberations. The morning sessions will be, general meetings at which the attendance of all members of the Convention is hoped for, and which will he devoted to a discussion of subjects related to the three several heads, "safety," "efficiency" and "conservation." The afternoon meetings will be divided into several sections, each devoted to the discussion of subjects of interest to its special branch of the industry. It is planned to have 811 papers printed and distributed, allowing the author a limited time in which to present the salient features of his address and giving up the greater part of the time to a discussion of the subject presented by members on the floor. By this plan it is hoped to have a free expression of opinion and to provide ample time for reaching conclusions to be embodied in resolutions representing the best thought of the mining industry.

Through the generosity of Sir Robert Hadfield, Honorary Member, the Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers are enabled to announce the Hadfield Research Prize of $1,000 for the best contribution to the publications of the Institute upon the general subject of The Different Forms and Combinations of Carbon with Iron, including those in Iron Alloys. The prize will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1916, to the best paper upon this subject which is presented to the Institute before Nov. 1, 1915, provided such paper is deemed worthy by the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee. The following suggestions are also added for the guidance of those who may take part in this research. While' it is not desired to define closely the exact lines or scope of the proposed research, as it is advisable to make these as broad as possible, the object in mind maybe said to be generally as follows: To elaborate and find out the best methods of determining the forms of carbon in steel or iron, including those in iron alloys. A portion of the work would probably be a continuation of the researches which have in the past been carried out by Jullien, Abel, Muller, Ledebur, T. Sterry Hunt, Akerman, Arnold, Stead, E. D. Campbell, Hogg, Parry, Upton, and others. In a generic way, metallurgists now speak of carbides, sub-carbides, double carbides, special carbides, and other combinations. It is very desirable that these should be accurately defined and understood. It is also desirable to know whether there are other or new forms; if so, can these be separated and their characteristics obtained. It may be interesting to point out that the carbon compounds now definitely known are stated to number over 80,000. It is very probable, therefore, that there is room for much valuable and useful research to be carried out with the object of increasing our knowledge of the various combinations of carbon with iron, as probably some of these are still unknown

DURING the last six years, there have been many extensive investigations of the fatigue of metals. The major work of 'these investigations has been the determination of constants for fatigue strength of wrought ferrous metals; but during the past year or two there have become available considerable test data on the fatigue strength of certain nonrferrous metals, including copper, brass, bronze, nickel, copper-nickel alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, magnesium and magnesium alloys. It is not proposed to give here extensive quantitative tables of test results; for such tables, reference is made to the published data of various laboratories. The following general conclusions, however, seem to be fairly well established: 1. The phenomenon known as "fatigue" of metal really a progressive fracture of metals. A minute (probably submicroscopic) crack is formed in the metal, the internat stress, is intensified at the ends' of the crack, and under successive applications of load the crack spreads like a minute hacksaw cut until there is not enough sound metal left in the cross-section of the piece to stand the load. applied, and then failure occurs suddenly. 2. For wrought ferrous metals, there is .a limiting intensity of stress (as computed by the ordinary formulas of mechanics of materials) below which, a metal is able to withstand an indefinitely large number of repetitions of stress without failure. This limiting stress is known as the "endurance limit or the fatigue limit.? For reversed flexure, the endurance limit for. wrought ferrous metals is usually not far from 50 per cent. of the ultimate tensile strength.

Last fall (1899) we had the good fortune to be able to spend a few weeks in the new placer gold-mining region of Alaska, which is known as the Nome region. Cape Nome, after which the region has been named, and which forms the southeastern corner of the Nome Mining District, is an unimportant promontory on the southern coast of the Seward Peninsula (see map, Fig. 1). The name Seward has recently been given to the great peninsula which forms the northwestern extremity of Alaska. To the north of it is the Arctic ocean, to the south Bering sea, while its wesbernmost extremity, Cape Prince of Wales, is separated from the Asiatic coast by the Bering straits. The coast line of the peninsula is of a cuspate character, consisting of a succession of sandy, crescent-shaped beaches and rocky headlands. The interior has been but little explored; but we know that it is comparatively rugged, the higher mountain peaks rising probably from 4000 to 5000 feet in elevation. The mountains have an easterly and westerly trend, and the water-shed between the two oceans probably nearly bisects the peninsula. At Golofnin bay, the southeastern part of the Seward peninsula, some spruce is found, but to the west the region is entirely timberless, except for a sparse growth of stunted

The Lake Superior region contains extensive deposits of potential iron ore in the form of fine-grained oxidized taconite. To help assure utilization of this resource in an environmentally sound manner, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is conducting bench- and pilot-scale research using wet high-intensity magnetic (WHIM) separation. The advantages and disadvantages of WHIM separation in comparison with other feasible beneficiation methods are discussed. Pilot plant results are given for a flowsheet in which WHIM scavenging is used in conjunction with selective flocculation and flotation. A mathematical model for use in process optimization is given. Practical aspects of matrix selection and separator design for WHIM separation of fine particles are discussed.

A. MALINOVSZKY,* Belleville, Ill. (written discussion?).-I have been very much interested in Mr. Dolman's paper. We all realize, I think, that this question of developing our home industries and support-ing the new industries which have developed during the great war is very important at present. Mr. Dolman has well shown the quantity and quality of the raw magnesite in the United States, and the commercial and industrial possibility of our home magnesite and I believe, with him, that our home industries should receive adequate protection. There are two reasons, however, for believing that this may be difficult. One reason is that much American capital is invested in the Austro-Hungarian magnesite industry. The raw magnesite can be quarried and prepared for the market in Austria with much cheaper labor expense than in the United States; large deposits which are very easy to quarry and good transportation facilities also contribute to the cheapness of production. The second reason is the old saying that the magnesite found in the United States is not of the same quality as the Austro-Hungarian mag-nesite; this I doubt. Even if the magnesite found here does not in a raw state equal the Austro-Hungarian, it can be synthetized so that the finished article will have the same properties as the Austro-Hun-garian finished magnesite refractory possesses. Thaw magnesite from Greece is not the same as the. Austro-Hungarian, but it has linen demon-strated that a good refractory can be made from the Greek product.

Although usually coal is screened with punched plate screens having round-hole perforations, there has been an increasing use of wire-cloth screens with square apertures, especially at pneumatic coal-cleaning plants and at other plants that use vibrating screens. It is therefore desirable to establish a relationship between round-hole and square-hole screens for use not only in experimental investigations of coal-preparation problems, but also for use in commercial operations. This need is apparent whenever it is necessary to substitute wire cloth for punched plate and still retain the familiar trade-size product. Although similar work probably has been done by industrial organizations concerned with the screen sizing of coal, the only recorded study of the subject other than the one described herein of which the authors are aware is that of Roesler,1 who screen-sized two samples of limestone and two of zinc concentrates crushed to pass 1/2 in. with a set of square and round-hole screens and found the ratio to be 1:1.23. Procedure In the course of a study of various methods for determining the friability of coal,2 it was necessary to screen-size the products of a series of friability tests of three different coals with both round-hole and square-hole screens. The coals used were from the Roslyn No. 3 and the Bayne mines in Washington and the Rolapp mine in Utah. Twenty 25-lb. samples of each of these three coals at 3 to 2 1/2 in. round-hole size were dropped from a height of 10 ft. to a concrete floor, and then screened with

The following notes on the Whopper and adjoining mines in the Gunnison district of Colorado mere made in the spring of this year. The time chosen for the author to visit the region was, unfortunately, the most unfavorable of an exceptionably unfavorable year. About the middle of May all the hill slopes, which at this period of the pear are generally covered with pasture, were thickly covered with snow. The unusually large precipitation of this Tear caused loacal mountain torrents at every few hundred feet, which wore away the oft foothills into gulches, gouged great chasms out of the roads, and transformed miles of usually dry soil into dangerous quagmires. Travel was totally interrupted for weeks, except on horseback or afoot, and even then with great difficulty and some danger. The Whopper mine is situated on the Whopper Mountain, about two miles from the headwaters of Rock Creek, and on the right hank of that stream. The Whopper Creek flows into Rock Creek horn the east, and, by a precipitous descent, offers excellent facilities for its utilization as a source of power. This stream, which pours past the picturesque Whopper Cabin about thirty tons of water a minute, has a fall of 100 feet in 400 yards, and is said to be a stream of some size, even at the seasons of the year when drought prevails. The Whopper claim extends down the hill a distance of about 250 feet to its intersection with the Whopper Creek (on the other side of which is a small tunnel on its extension called the "Teller") and over the steep hill northwest to the limits of the claim about 1250 feet. The part of the mountain in which this mine is situated is remarkable for its splendid forest, the spruce, fir, and quaking asp covering the mountain-sides with a green growth of valuable timber. The distance from Gothic City to this mine is about eight miles along the valleys of East River and Rock Creek, and on the divide which separates them. The elevation of Gothic City is given from the engineer's notes as 9500 feet above sea-level, and the mean of several observations with a Beck watch-barometer made the elevation of Whopper Cabin (which is about fifteen feet above the floor of the Whopper upper tunnel) about 1260 feet above Skiles's Cabin in Gothic City. IN diamond coring salt beds to evaluate deposits, special techniques are applied to standard slim hole drilling to obtain a representative sample of the water soluble sodium chloride. Industrial consumers generally require a run-of-the-mine material of 98.0 pct sodium chloride. Since no commercial beneficiation has yet been devised to upgrade the lower quality salt beds, the only processing is crushing and screening to the size required by the customer. Coring salt sections has recently become important not only in dry mining, but also in the development of brine cavities by hydraulic fracturing and the formation of jugs for storing liquid petroleum products. Drilling Fluid: The fluid used in coring salt beds in New York, Ohio, and Michigan is a thoroughly saturated brine made from 3.0 lb rock salt per gal of make-up water. This mined rock salt, -4 mesh +10 mesh, is dissolved in a lixator, a double-bottomed cone hopper that turns fresh water to fully saturated brine.

The effects of grain size and shape on alloys of titanium with nitrogen and aluminum have been determined. Increasing a grain size decreases strength and hardness and increases impact resistance. Quenching from the ß field produces subgrain markings delineating a plates in Ti-N alloys but not in Ti-AI alloys. This suggests a precipitation from the high nitrogen alloys. ALPHA titanium alloys are single-phase alloys with the hexagonal-close-packed structure of a titanium. If these alloys are worked and annealed within the a field, equiaxed structures result in which strength is derived from the solid solution of the alloying elements present. Strain hardening can be used to increase further the strength of a titanium alloys. This is the only other mode of strengthening the a type of alloy. Quenching from the ß field has been noted by many investigators to have little effect on the strength of iodide titanium and on commercial titanium. Ti-A1 alloys were found to be little different in hardness, whether annealed in the a field or quenched from the ß field.' These facts illustrate a characteristic of a titanium alloys: they are insensitive to heat treatments from the ß field. Underlying this heat-treatment insensitivity are the facts that the a-ß field is generally narrow in a titanium alloys, the transformation-temperature range increases with a-stabilizing content, and the a solubilities of the alloying elements are greater than the ß solubilities. When quenching is done from the ß field, there is no supersaturation of the alloying elements in the acicular transformation structure produced. Welds in a titanium alloys generally are ductile, because no transformation hardening occurs during cooling.1,2 Other desirable features of a alloys are: no thermal-stability problem, excellent toughness, and retention of strength at elevated temperatures better than a-ß or ß alloys of comparable room-temperature strength. The prime factors governing the properties of a titanium alloys are the amount and kind of solute present. This can change the a phase from a soft, tough material into a hard, brittle material with no apparent change in microstructure. Moreover, brit-tleness can exist over a wider alloy-content range, without change of phase, than in most other metals. The solutes for a titanium may be divided into interstitial and substitutional types. Oxygen and nitrogen dissolve interstitially in rather large amounts, extending well through the brittle range, and the transformation-temverature ranges are raised in the process.:' , carbon has a maximum interstitial solubility of about 0.5 pct at the peritectoid temperature, while at lower temperatures the solubility decreases to about 0.2 pct.3,5 Substitutional a solutes include aluminum and tin. Aluminum has a high a solubility of 25 pct Al, and increases the transformation-temperature range markedly.6,7 Tin has a high a solubility of about 20 pct, but has a relatively innocuous effect on the transformation-temperature range.' The choice between interstitial and substitutional solutes generally has been conceded to the substitutional solutes because of a belief that they do not have as adverse an effect on ductility and notch toughness. However, a recent investigation8 on the effect of hydrogen on titanium has shown that this element, which is not under compositional control, has a powerful detrimental effect on notch toughness. Hydrogen was shown to form a hydride which is practically insoluble (about 0.002 pct) in a titanium at room temperature, although the solubility at the eutectoid temperature of about 300°C is relatively high, about 0.16 pct. Limited data were presented on the effect of hydrogen on a alloys, where the same impairment of toughness as in unalloyed titanium is found. The work reported here describes the effects of interstitial and substitutional solutes on 1—the mechanical properties of high purity titanium free of titanium hydride and 2—the influence of structural variables on these properties. Nitrogen was selected as an example of an interstitial solute with high solubility and aluminum as a substitutional solute with high solubility. All compositions were well within the ductile range, since it was not intended to study the brittleness problem here, but to study only the factors influencing optimum mechanical properties. Procedures The alloys were prepared from iodide titanium as 1/2 Ib ingots double melted to insure homogeneity.

In a device known as the electron-beam microprobe, the mining industry has lately acquired a sophisticated new analytical tool that can dig out answers to a broad range of questions spanning all phases of mining activity. Essentially, the microprobe is a specialized X-ray fluorescence unit that makes it possible to obtain chemical analytical data for volumes as small as 1 cup. With this capability, it can be used both for determining the composition of small inclusions in rocks or metallic products and for monitoring changes in composition that proceed from a reacting surface. At the Research Center of Kennecott's Metal Mining Division, this versatile probe has successfully solved problems in mineral operations ranging from exploration through refining. A few instances of how the probe has been applied at the Center are presented here. In Mineral Exploration-A Good Look Before Leaping Since the objective of mineral exploration is to locate deposits of materials which can be processed at a profit, the mode of occurrence of elements or minerals in the deposits is important.

Cadmium, along with other impurities such as lead, gallium, germanium and indium, is characteristically found associated with zinc ores, the average ratio of zinc to cadmium being about 200 to 1. The increasing demand for cadmium has led most zinc producers to develop a means for its recovery. The separation and recovery of this byproduct constitutes an important development in the metallurgical field. Zinc sulphide concentrates, principally from domestic sources, are processed at Donora Zinc Works and they assay approximately 60 pct zinc, 30 pct sulphur, 0.37 pct cadmium, and 0.8 pct lead. Concentrates are roasted to convert zinc sulphide to zinc oxide. Sulphur evolved as sulphur dioxide is used to manufacture 60º Baume sulphuric acid by the lead chamber process. The roasted calcine is sintered to remove the remaining sulphur and volatile impurities. Fume from the sintering machines is collected by Cottrell pre-cipitators and sent to the Cadmium Department for cadmium removal. The sintered product, a crude zinc oxide, is then mixed with coke and salt and charged into horizontal retorts for reduction to zinc metal. Furnace residues are then passed through a Waelz kiln which recovers practically all of the remaining zinc as an oxide. This oxide is collected by Cottrell precipi-tators and returned to the sintering plant for further processing. The following discussion covers operating procedure, and equipment used in the Cadmium Department for the manufacture of cadmium and its byproducts. (See attached Flow Sheet, Fig 1.) The production of cadmium may be divided into several steps, each of which will be discussed separately. These steps are as follows: 1. Raw Materials—Sinter Plant Cottrell dust, acid sludge and sulphuric acid. 2. Sulphating—Separation of lead. 3. Purification—Separation of impurities other than zinc. 4. Precipitation—Separation of cadmium from zinc. 5. Briquetting—Preparation of sponge for charging to furnace. 6. Smelting—Distillation of cadmium metal. 7. Remelting—Casting into commercial shapes. 8. Recovery of Rare Metals—Separation of germanium, gallium and indium. Raw Materials The raw material, or Sinter Plant Cottrell dust, from which the cadmium is manufactured, is recovered by Cottrell units collecting fume from two Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines. An average analysis of this dust is 36 pct zinc, 1.5 pct sulphur, 17 pct lead, and 5.5 pct cadmium, with associated elements in smaller amounts. A lesser tonnage of material removed from the sintering machine fans, and called fan cleanings, is also treated for cadmium. It is lower grade material and analyzes approximately 41 pct zinc, 1.2 pct sulphur, 14 pct lead, and 4 pct cadmium. Cottrell dust and fan cleanings are delivered to the Cadmium Department by monorail crane in bell-bottomed dump buckets. Acid sludge and 60" Bauine sulphuric acid are received from the Acid Department. The acid sludge is a mixture of lead sulphate, sulphuric acid and zinc sulphate, and is recovered mainly from the floors of the acid chambers or storage tanks. The acid sludge is delivered to the Cadmium Plant in a lead lined bucket. The 60º Baume sulphuric acid is delivered through a lead pipe to a lead lined storage tank. Sulphating Four well ventilated lead lined sulphating tanks, 8 1/2 ft in diam by 12 ft deep, are used. These are steel tanks lined with 20 lb lead on the bottom and 16 lb lead on the ides, equipped with Hastelloy side agitators. 15 hp motors drive 24 in. propellers at 450 rpm. There are water connections to stuffing boxes to keep sludge from entering the bearings. The tanks are covered with removable wooden lids and are connected to marine plywood

In this volume, which is divided into chapters on a commodity basis, many subjects inevitably have a common interest with others, or are interrelated in one way or another. No group of commodities is so outstanding in this regard as is that group of which the basic raw material is a carbonate rock. There are chapters in this book on dimension stone, on crushed stone, on chalk and whiting, on cement, on lime, on magnesite, on sodium carbonate; all of which are entirely, or partly, products of the "carbonate rocks." Rhodochrosite, witherite and strontianite are other carbonates described respectively in chapters on manganese minerals, barium minerals and strontium minerals; and travertine and cave onyx are carbonate materials used as ornamental stones. High grade marble is used for monuments and statues and as a decorative building stone. The aggregate tonnage of the basic raw material, the carbonate rock, is so enormous that it exceeds the tonnage of any metallic ore mined and quarried in the United States, and in turn is exceeded only by coal, sand and gravel, and by water in the gross tonnage produced by the mineral industry in this country. The specialties, including magnesite, sodium carbonate, and rhodochrosite, witherite and strontianite are produced from uncommon rock types of limited occurrence. They are described adequately in the chapters devoted to these subjects. This chapter is concerned with the limestones and dolomites. No other solid rocks are as important as these in the industrial life of the world, nor are any so widely known. Massive units of some carbonate formations form many of the spectacular features of some of the most rugged mountains in the world, such as the Dolomite Alps, the Canadian Rockies, some rugged peaks of the eastern flanks of the American Rockies in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico and in many ranges in Utah, Nevada and Arizona. These continue down the Sierra Oriental in Mexico and on around the world to the flanks of the Himalayas, in the South China Highlands, and separating Asia and Europe in the flanks of the Ural Mountains where they form many reexhumed hills called Shikhany.50a Less rugged and more nearly flat-lying carbonate rocks underlie most of the area of our great Middle Western plain, the southern part of England and the northern part of Africa. These are the common rock formations known from boyhood to a large part of the world's population. The use of lime, produced by the burning of limestone, goes back to antiquity, and mortar was used widely in Biblical times. The cement made by mixing volcanic ash with lime was a basic material of construction when Pompeii was built. Our Eastern states are dotted with abandoned limestone quarries, and the ruins of old lime kilns which were operated in Colonial days. Many limestones and dolomites are found in flat-lying strata of a thickness convenient for quarrying as a building stone, so that houses and other structures have been built with them for centuries. In order to replace the muddy and rutted dirt roads with surfaces that could stand the hard usage of his wagons and carts, man learned to crush stone and put a layer of it on his old trails. The phase boundaries in the ternary system Ti-Cr-Al have been established at 1800° and 1400°F for alloys containing more than 60 pct Ti. The martensite transformation temperature has been measured for the titanium-rich alloys. THE studies of binary alloys of titanium with the transition elements which have been published so far1-0 ndicate clearly that the solubility of these elements is always much greater in the high temperature body-centered cubic form of titanium (ß phase) than in the low temperature hexagonal form. In this category of alloying elements are iron, nickel, chromium, manganese, vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, columbium, and tantalum. Although studies of the nontransition elements have been rather limited, early work on titanium binary alloys'" has shown that most of them were not very soluble in the a form, with the exception of aluminum, for which the solubility in a is about 25 pct.13, 12 In addition to this large solubility in a, aluminum is also soluble in ß titanium to the extent of about 35 pct and the transformation temperature from ß to a is raised with aluminum content. This effect is also typical of aluminum, in contrast with that found for the transition elements which lower the ß to a transformation temperature. Therefore, it may be anticipated that tprnarv titanium alloys with aluminum and any one of the transition elements will constitute a class of ternary alloys having characteristic features absent in alloys involving two transition elements. Chromium was chosen as a typical transition element for the present study because ternary alloys of Ti-Al-Cr commercially produced have been found to possess very interesting physical properties (MST-3 pct A1-5 pct Cr of Mallory-Sharon).'" Binary Systems The binary systems Ti-A1 and Ti-Cr have been established recently by several investigators. The data used in this investigation were taken from the complete diagram of Bumps, Kessler, and Hansen." This diagram agrees quite well with earlier investigations." For the Ti-Cr system, the phase boundaries at 1800" and 1400°F were taken from refs. 6 and 7. The binary system Cr-A1 has been studied recently by Bradley." This system is rather complex and contains not less than seven intermediate phases. The present study was limited to the titanium corner of the ternary system (less than a total of 40 pct Cr plus Al) and none of the phases present in the Cr-A1 binary alloys were found in the ternary alloys investigated. It is known that stoichiometric NiTi transforms to a structure of lower symmetry near room temperature. The present investigation deals primarily with the changes in the electrical and magnetic properties which occur at the transformation. The effects of composition and various heat treatments on electrical properties are also discussed. In recent investigations by Purdy and Parr,' Wang et a1.,2 Dautovich and Purdy,~ Dautovich et a1.,4 and the authors, ~,' NiTi has been observed to undergo a martensitic phase transformation from the ordered CsCl (B2) structure to one of lower symmetry. The crystal structure of the low-temperature modification is still not completely worked out. This transformation occurs near room temperature for the stoichiometric composition. The thermodynamic, elastic, crystallographic, and microstructural characteristics of this transformation for some compositions have been previously reported.'-= In the present investigation, the changes in the electrical transport properties and magnetic susceptibility of NiTi when it undergoes the martensitic phase transformation have been measured. The approximate composition range covered is 48 to 52 pct Ti.* *All compositions are given in atomic percent._____________________ EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS 1) Sample Preparation. The NiTi alloys were prepared from iodide titanium (>99.92 pct Ti) and vacuum-premelted carbonyl nickel (>99.95 pct Ni) by repeated arc melting under gettered argon and casting in a water-cooled copper mold. After the cast buttons were hot-forged at 800" to 950°C, the oxidized surface was removed by grinding and etching. Samples were cut from the worked polycrystalline buttons. After fabrication, the samples were annealed 1 hr at 900°C and water-quenched. The composition of the alloys was assumed to be the same as in the initial feed. This assumption was supported by material balance checks on 100-g arc-melted buttons which demonstrated quantitative recovery to within k0.02 pct. The oxygen content of the alloys was '150 ppma (weight) and the carbon content was 30 to 50 ppm. 2) Electrical Resistivity and Hall Effect. The electrical resistivity was measured over the composition range 48 to 52 pct Ti for temperatures varying from 4.2"K to 900°C. The high-temperature and many of the low-temperature experiments were carried out using conventional 4-probe dc techniques.7 The Hall coefficient and ac resistivity were measured at 20 cps using the apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. The equipment is basically an ac potentiometer: The resistive or Hall voltage of the sample is balanced by a comparison voltage provided by a dividing network across a standard series resistance. The off-balance signal is amplified by a Tektronix 122 amplifier and detected by a Princeton Applied Research (PAR) phase-sensitive detector. The precision of the resistivity and Hall coefficient measurements is i0.1 and i3 pct, respectively. The uncertainty in the data is increased by i2 pct from the precision limits because of uncertainty in dimensions and possible end effects. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and Hall effect for a stoichiometric (50.0 pct Ti) NiTi sample are illustrated in Fig. 2. COBALT is a silvery white metal with a slight bluish cast, strongly resembling nickel in its appearance and properties, notably its resistance to corrosion, although its alloys with other metals differ quite decidedly in their properties from those of nickel. The name cobalt was derived from the German "Kobold" meaning goblin and this came to be applied to the cobalt minerals which, although they resembled ores, did not readily yield metal when smelted by the primitive processes available in the Middle Ages. Cobalt minerals were used as pigments by potters and glass workers before the Christian era. Cobalt blue glass was found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients were entirely unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt and the metal itself was only isolated about the middle of the eighteenth century by Brandt although the preparation of cobalt compounds had been carried on in a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits at Schneeberg, Germany, in 1470. The metal is fairly hard, with a density when pure of 8.81 in the cast state and 8.92 after working. The commercial grade of cobalt has a density of about 8.75 in the cast state. The atomic weight is 58.97. The Brinell hardness of the pure metal is 124; that of the commercial grade varies from as low as 100 to as high as 138, depend¬ing upon the impurities present. Pure cobalt has a sharp melting point at 1478°C. The tensile strength of the pure metal in the cast condition is said to be higher than that of any other pure metal. Kalmus gives it as 34,400 lb. per sq. in. for cast unannealed metal; the effect of annealing at 850 to 900°C. is to raise the strength slightly. The yield point is close to the ultimate strength and the reduction in area and elongation are both low. Mechanical working raises the tensile strength of pure cobalt rapidly and in the form of wire it will be over 100,000 lb. per sq. in. The presence of small quantities of carbon in the commercial metal raises the tensile strength to as high as 61,000 lb. per sq. in., the reduction in area and elongation being raised at the same time to approximately 20 per cent.

A NUMBER of detailed investigations of the physical changes accom-panying age-hardening have raised the question as to the possibility of some phenomenon preceding the actual process of precipitation. There is considerable evidence to indicate that in the first stages of the aging process there is a pronounced distortion of the crystal lattice. This is particularly marked in duralumin. It would be of considerable theo-retical interest to know the nature of this distortion as compared with that produced in other ways and to find out whether, in supersaturated alloys, it is a necessary antecedent to the formation of a second phase by precipitation. It was believed that a study of the age-hardening char-acteristics of a normally aged alloy compared with one that had been mechanically distorted might supply some useful information on these points. In addition, information would be obtained regarding the effect of a mechanical distortion on any subsequent stage in the aging process. Duralumin was chosen as the material for this investigation because the various aspects of its aging behavior can be shown in detail by suit-able variations of the aging temperature. Also, probably more work has been done on this class of alloys than on any other. In spite of the many published results, it was felt that the experiments would be significant only if all of the work were done on samples from the same source and if they were examined under identical experimental conditions.
