Discussion of the paper of Ernest Stütz, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1257 to 1265. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.:-I have hunted in vain for a figure which gives a dehydration temperature of cement. I was wondering if Mr. Stütz had a figure of that kind. E. STÜTZ :-No, I am afraid I have not. H. 0. HOFMAN :-I believe some figures have been published that cement disintegrates at 400° or 500° C. It seems tome a very low temperature. Mr. Stütz just made the statement that the disintegration of this briquette begins at the temperature at which the briquette begins to sinter. E. STÜTZ :-Above the sintering point. H. 0. HOFMAN :-The sintering point would be about 1,200° C. E. STÜTZ :-Yes, roughly speaking. I am afraid I have no information about the exact degree of dehydration. H. O. HOFMAN :-I have looked a great deal for such a figure and I have not been able to obtain it. Professor Howe says I might have tried myself. But my interests were directed in another line; although-that is, perhaps, a good suggestion. CHAIRMAN RICHARDS:-Is not Portland cement sometimes used for the test in a cupellation furnace and a drying-out furnace ? H. O. HOFMAN :-Yes, it is used, but that is a higher temperature, of course. But I have been trying to get a figure as to where it loses all its water. I understand it begins to lose water at 500° C. But there are different silicates or hydrosilicates in the cement, so that one would have four or five or sit figures to show the different stages at which the cement loses its water. CHAIRMAN RICHARDS :-I would ask whether the use of this material in blast furnaces has shown increased capacity of furnace or decreased consumption of fuel.

I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION. TECHNICAL progress takes place in two directions: the improvement of methods, affecting the quality of the product; and increase in the economy of operations, affecting its cost. In the iron-industry, practice is pretty well settled, and. revolutionary changes of method are, for the present, not to be expected. Hence, in this industry, the principal endeavor is to reduce costs by the use of labor-saving inventions, such as the machines brought into use during the last decade. But it is not alone necessary to reduce the labor-cost; complete economy requires also a saving in raw material. Under this head we may rank the coal employed as metallurgical fuel; and it follows that progress includes the economic use of fuel, so managed as not to injure quality of product. In the present paper it will be shown how, by suitable utilization of the heat from the furnace, a large portion of it may be made available for other purposes. Such utilization of waste-gases is important in all industries which employ furnaces (especially heating- and smelting-furnaces); and in the first rank of these stand the iron-, glass-, and porcelain-manufactures. The following pages are devoted chiefly to the waste-gases of smelting-works, and especially to those reverberatory-furnace gases which are not combustible.'

Transit A light weight, totally enclosed theodolite, especially designed for mining, has been placed on the market by Askania Werke, A. G. The instrument weighs only 41/4 lb and measures 51/8 x 71/2 in. without tripod and in a waterproof aluminum hood. It may be mounted on tripod or bracket without removing the protective hood. [ ] Standard equipment includes diagonal eyepiece rotating in all directions which eliminates need to be in line with scope for sighting and makes an auxiliary scope unnecessary for steep sights. The transit reads direct to 1 minute and may be estimated to 6 seconds by means of optical micrometer on both horizontal and vertical circles. The telescope in vertical position serves as optical plummet, sighting through an opening in the base. The instrument is shown above mounted for attaching to a pin driven in timber or rock, eliminating tripod or set-up bar in cramped quarters. The chain clamp in the lower picture is used on timber or steel ground supports. Complete with carrying case and set-up brackets, ready for use in a raise, it weighs less than 6 lb, and the protective hood remains on until the instrument is securely mounted. INTRODUCTION Ideally, this paper should start by citing examples of slope failures in open pit mines during earthquakes. I do not know of any such examples, although - since my search of the literature has not been exhaustive - such examples may well exist. However, there certainly are many examples of devastating earthquake-induced landslides, and there is no reason why such landslides cannot occur at large open pits. Moreover, many of the actual earthquake-induced landslides have seriously affected mining operations in one way or another. Hence, this paper will treat earthquake-induced landslide phenomena in general, in the hope and expectation that the reader can apply this general knowledge to the specific problems associated with open pit mining. Ultimately, of course, the aim is to predict the likelihood of the occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides, and to delineate steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of their occurrence. These aims can be achieved only imperfectly at the present time, for our knowledge concerning earthquake-induced landslides is still in an embryonic stage. Nonetheless, much useful knowledge does exist. In order to understand and apply this knowledge, it is necessary to: 1. Review the nature and extent of actual earthquake-induced landslides; 2. Have a grasp of the basic terminology and concepts of seismology; 3. Study the fundamentals of probability-based seismic risk analysis; 4. Appreciate the way in which earth materials behave during earthquake loadings; and 5. Have a general knowledge of the methods currently available for analyzing the dynamic response of slopes. Much of this paper is devoted to this necessary background. Information of practical use in connection with various classes of slope stability problems is assembled in the final sections. LANDSLIDES DURING PAST EARTHQUAKES Almost every earthquake in mountainous country, strong enough to be reported in the literature, has caused at least some landslides and rockfalls. Norris, Patterson, and Crane has been from the standpoint of the mineral land-value owners, a few remarks in the interest of the "under dog"-the average taxpayer and citizen-may prove timely. In my discussion of Doctor Raymond's Paper1 and of the papers of Messrs. Gibson2 and Godson, 3 have endeavored to demonstrate, from both political economy and history, that our existing system of unrestricted private ownership of land is incompatible with equality of economic opportunity and, therefore, subversive of our democratic political institutions. In Mr. Graton's paper, the same land problem is important, though camouflaged by the failure of the Federal income tax laws to distinguish between land and capital, in the requirements for valuation, or between earned and unearned incomes in the levying of taxes. I disagree with Mr. Graton's statement, on p. 2967, as follows: The immense majority of mining ventures are failures. A multitude of disappointments is relieved by occasional success. Were it not for the chance of great rewards, all the vitally necessary but mainly unremunerative work of exploration would not be undertaken. In contrast with nearly all other fields of endeavor, it is altogether unlikely that, on the whole, the gains in the successful mining ventures suffice to offset the losses in the unsuccessful.

OPEN-HEARTH refractories are not merely an accessory to the furnace. They themselves ore the furnace, to all intents and purposes. The steel work of the main structure is merely a frame which helps to support the refractories; and the regenerators, a necessary part of the furnace system, consist almost entirely of refractories with very little supporting structure. Not only do refractories constitute the essential part of the furnace, but they also carry the liquid steel all the way to the point where it begins to solidify. On leaving the furnace the liquid passes through a refractory runner into a refractory-lined ladle, then through a refractory nozzle closed by a refractory stopper on the end of a refractory- protected rod. The liquid is sometimes sent through an additional refractory-lined tun-dish, a supplementary ladle, or a refractory runner for bottom pouring, until it finally enters the iron mold in which it solidifies. Even in the mold, refractory materials are sometimes used to provide a non-conducting "hot top." These materials, from ladle to hot top inclusive, are often referred to as the "pouring-pit refractories." CAUSES OF FAILURE Compared with the equipment used in most industrial processes the open-hearth furnace has a relatively short life. The most important quality of an open-hearth refractory, therefore, is its rate of failure. The discussion here of the individual refractory materials will therefore keep uppermost the question "Why, how, and where does it fail?" The principal causes of failure of open-hearth refractories are, in their order of importance: 1. Reaction with iron oxides. 2. Reaction with slag. 3. Flow and failure under load. 4. Melting. 5. Theoretical expressions are presented to describe wetting and non-wetting phase relative premeability relations. These expressions have then been compared with existing published data, the conformance noted being sufficiently good to satisfy the requirements of some engineering use. As a consequence, it may be supposed that relative permeability characteristics of porous media now can be inferred from basic core analysis data, in a manner more convenient (although less direct) than presently available methods of experimental evaluation. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a new approach to the problem of relative permeability evaluation. A classification of published discussions of relative permeability concepts which have appeared in the petroleum literature will show that previously emphasis has been placed on methods of experimental measurement, on the interpretation of the data so obtained with respect to the variable properties of the system, and on theoretical and practical considerations which relate relative permeability to gross fluid behavior in petroleum reservoirs. Essentially, no detailed examination has appeared which treats the fundamental factors controlling the quantitative features of the relative permeability relation*, although cer- tain references can be Cited where a qualitative awareness of their existence and nature is indicated. This condition is explainable in terms of the recognized complexity of the problem, and in order to provide some basis for theoretical development, the general emphasis has been placed in the past on experimental procedures of evaluation, the validity of which, in principle, could be confirmed by the analysis of well and reservoir performance. However, because of the experimental difficulties which have been encountered (notably, difficulties due to the so-called "end effects"), and because of the general unreliability of field performance tests required to study the applicability of the data, relative permeability phenomena continue to be incompletely understood and described.? In this paper is examined the possibility of predicting relative permeabilities entirely from fundamental considerations. In addition, attention is called to certain important factors, previously unemphasized in the published literature, which now can serve as a basis for the eventual experimental confirmation of this and similar theoretical approaches, as well as the experimental solution of the problem in general. Therefore, the analysis presented herein has the dual purpose both of orienting future experimental activity and also of providing an immediate solution for the relative permeability porblem, sufficiently adequate for some engineering use. It will be seen that the conclusions reached are supported by theoretical and intuitive considerations, and they are not contradicted insofar as gross features are concerned by existing concepts and interpretations of published experimental data, except as specifically noted. Subsidence caused by mining operations has been a matter of interest for the mining engineer for just 111 years, since the Belgian committee for study of subsidence in the city of Liege submitted its first report in 1825. This interest is fairly expressed in the enormous amount of literature that has since appeared on this subject. A bibliography, probably far from being complete, which preceded this study as a preliminary survey, comprises more than 800 titles. In spite of this fact the problem remains today as acute as it has ever been. The questions of as good a recovery as possible of the national resources, the safety of the operations, and the protection of private and public property are the important angles from which to look at the problem. The Problem To systematize an investigation regarding the effects of mine excavations two different aspects have to be dealt with: (1) the subsidence of the immediate roof above the workings, affecting the safety of the workers and the progress and efficiency of the operations; (2) the subsidence of the surface, which is also, from the point of time, the second event. The immense importance of surface subsidence as regards the impairment of surface structures of every kind in a mining area is self-evident. Both effects result from reactions of the strata overlying the excavations and they depend mainly on the extent of the excavations and the structure and geological condition of the strata. It has been stressed repeatedly, in this country principally by G. S. Ricel,† that for the understanding of the phenomenon of subsidence accurate surveys are the most urgent necessity. In the past, however, at least in the normal course of mining operations, these surveys have been very crude. The control of the roof in the mine is left to the observation of the behavior of the timber, warning cracks and sounds in roof and walls and to the general judgment and experience of the worker and his supervisors. In any given case this may or may not be sufficient to prevent fatalities but certainly it does not give any accurate information as to what is happening in roof and strata. On the surface, principally in endangered areas, surveys have been conducted more frequently, but also in this case usually weeks or even

Every new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were introduced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose. Before describing the electrostatic processing of feldspar, it might be well to review some of the basic definitions and terminology of feldspars. The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Hardness varies between 6 and 6.5 and specific gravity between 2.5 and 2.8. Color is generally white or pale shades of red, yellow, or green. The approximate chemical composition of the principal feldspars is given in Table I. The albite (sodium aluminum silicate) and an orthite (calcium aluminum silicate) feldspars are the end members of a series called plagioclase. These two molecules form a complete solid solution series ranging from pure soda feldspar at one end to the pure lime feldspar at the other end. Intermediate solid solutions are known as oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytoconite. The general structure throughout this series is the same. Sodium and calcium may replace each other and silicon and aluminum may replace each other in the structure.

The predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold also is carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the un-roasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching, and the so-called " accumulated slimes " by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. Palmarejo Mines. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12 miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. The creep mechanism and kinetics of fine-grained magnesium have been studied over the temperature range 200&apos; to 600°F. As a result of a photographic study of microstructural changes, transient and steady-state creep components have been correlated with slip, subgrain formation, and cyclic deformation at the grain boundaries. THE approach of this research has been the blend of a quantitative study of the creep strain of polycrystalline magnesium as a function of time, stress, and temperature with direct microstructural observations of the operative deformation processes. The validity of the conclusions is dependent on the condition that the microstructural changes seen on the polished surface qualitatively represent those occurring in the bulk of the metal. The work was intended as much to lay a background to a study of highly creep-resistant magnesium alloys as to provide a description of the behavior of the base metal itself. The spectroscopic analysis of the electrolytic magnesium used in this study is as follows: Al, 0.009 pct; Ca, <0.01; Cu, 0.0011; Fe, 0.021; Mn, 0.012; Ni, 0.0004; Pb, 0.0012; Si, <0.001; Sn, <0.001; and Zn, <0.01. The impurity level is approximately that of commercial magnesium alloys. The original ingot was melted under Dow type 310 flux and cast as a 3 in. diam billet. It was extruded into 1 in. flat stock under the conditions: billet preheat 800°F (1 hr), container and die temperature 800°F, speed 3 ft per min, and area reduction ratio 45:1. The extrusion process was chosen in preference to rolling and recrystallization because it allowed easier grain size control from specimen to specimen. The grains of the extruded metal were fairly equi-axial and uniform in the size range of 4 to 6 thousandths of an inch. The preferred orientation of basal planes about the transverse direction was determined by an X-ray diffraction surface reflection method. A beam of filtered copper radiation was directed at an angle of 17" to both the transverse direction and the surface yet perpendicular to the extrusion axis. Analysis of the (002) diffraction arcs in the resulting photographic patterns gave an approximate intensity distribution along the great circle which extends through the center of the basal plane pole figure and to the extrusion axis poles. Successive layers of metal were removed by macro-etching between exposures. The extruded texture is relatively sharp, but the most significant point is the position of the maximum basal plane pole density and its variation with depth below the surface. Fig. 1 shows that this maximum is rotated 15" from the normal at the surface toward the extrusion direction. Such an inclination has been reported for extruded 1 pct Mn and 8 pct A1-0.5 pct Zn alloys.&apos; The inclination decreases until the maximum splits at about 0.025 in. depth into two elements of equal and opposite rotations from the ideal. The double texture persists to as great a depth as was experimentally convenient to examine. It probably continues to the very center of the extrusion. There is no great change in the sharpness of the individual elements of the texture with depth. A plate of metal about 0.015 in. thick at the surface of the extruded stock was produced by etching. A transmission diffraction pattern was made for the purpose of determining any preferred orientation of a direction in the basal planes. Relatively uniform {loo) and {101) rings were produced. There is little tendency for parallelism of a given direction in the plane with the projection of the extrusion axis on it. The creep specimens were machined from 6¼ in. lengths of the extruded stock. Creep was measured on the reduced section, ½x1/8X2¼ in. long. This section was electropolished on one side for the studies of microstructural changes during creep. An orthophosphoric acid-ethyl alcohol electrolyte was used under the conditions recommended by Jacquet.² Hand polishing was used for previous mechanical preparation. Electropolishing was continued until all mechanical twins had been removed. The electro-polished surface was protected from oxidation during creep testing by a thin layer of silicone oil. All micrographs were taken at room temperature on conventional metallographic equipment and after removal of the oil film. The creep tests were performed with machines which have been described in detail by Moore and McDonald." Five testing temperatures, 200°, 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600° ±3°F were used. Difference in temperature between the two ends of the specimen reduced section was 2°F or less. The testing was done at constant load. Strain readings were taken as frequently as necessary to develop usable creep curves. Tensile Creep vs Time, Stress, and Temperature A definition of terms is necessary. I WISH to present to you a few thoughts on some of the phenomena and laws of iron smelting. Owing to the great complexity of the subject, to the great variety of points to be taken into consideration, many of which are very poorly understood, and to the meagreness and even conflictoriness of our information with regard to some of the most important laws which govern the subject, the fruits of such thoughts as I venture to offer you must be received as speculations, not as facts. I wish to present to you a few thoughts on some of the phenomena and laws of iron smelting. Owing to the great complexity of the subject, to the great variety of points to be taken into consideration, many of which are very poorly understood, and to the meagreness and even conflictoriness of our information with regard to some of the most important laws which govern the subject, the fruits of such thoughts as I venture to offer you must be received as speculations, not as facts. United States Steel Corp&apos;s. Minntac mine is located at Mt. Iron, Minn. on the Mesabi Iron range. The taconite pit is two miles wide, with a maximum depth of 170 ft. Millions of tons of crude ore, waste rock, and surface overburden are handled annually at the mine. All crude ore plus some of the lower-grade rock are rail-hauled; other materials are trucked. Length of rail haul averages 3.5 mi, with a lift of 140 ft. The maximum grade against the load is 1 ½ %. Nine 1200 hp diesel-electric locomotives handle trains of 40-and 50-cu yd side dump cars in crude ore and lower-grade rock service. In addition to this continuous operation, locomotives handle coarse tailings disposal and switching duties on an intermittent basis. All railroad equipment operates under the supervision of a mine control foreman through voice radio communication. The pit foreman also has this frequency available, quickly accommodating any changes in operation that may be required.

brittlement or notch sensitivity progressively increases. Further, in contrast to results obtained with the impact test, the notch strength for the large specimens does not reveal a 500°F embrittlement range. The notch sensitivity as determined with the 0.3-in. specimen of 4340 steel given the stepped austenitizing treatment has been discussed elsewhere. This quantity as measured for the 1.1-in.- diam notch tensile test and given in Fig. 3, is taken to signify that reduced notch sensitivity is encountered in the 600" to 800°F tempering range for specimens given the stepped austenitizing treatment. The stepped austenitizing treatment may, there- fore, be of use in promoting deeper hardenability for a 4340 steel while at the same time giving reduced notch sensitivity in the high-strength range in which this steel is now being used. The Crucible mine in Pennsylvania, operating on Pittsburgh seam coal, is rated at 5000 tpd. The washing plant, built in 1943, is rated at about 400 tph, using hydroseparator boxes to wash the coarse coal (4 x 5/16 in.) and hydrotator units for the fine coal (5/16 x 0). It is generally acknowledged that gravity concentration equipment cannot be used efficiently to beneficiate coal finer than about 65 mesh. Before the present flotation circuit was installed, Crucible recovered its fine coal slurry, predominantly -24 mesh material, by passing it through a battery of five 14-in. and one hundred and ten 3-in. Hey1 & Patterson cyclones in parallel with a 75-ft Dorr thickener. About two thirds went to the cyclones and one third to the thickener. Underflows from cyclones and thickener were filtered, respectively, in one 12-disk Eimco and two 4-disk Oliver filters fitted with stainless steel cloth. The resulting cakes were added to the coarse metallurgical coal. The filtrates, overflow from the 3-in. cyclones, and thickener overflow were recycled to the coarse coal plant.

A brief history of TiCI, production and purification is given. Chlorinator feed materials for the production of TiCI4 are classified. The thermodynamics and kinetics of Ticl4 production by chlorination of TiO2 are discussed. Problems encountered in the chlorination and purification steps are outlined in detail. MOST of the current processes for the production of titanium metal require the use of TiC14 as a source of titanium values. This material can only be produced by a dry chlorination process, since it is immediately hydrolyzed in the presence of water. When pure, the tetrachloride is a colorless liquid boiling at 136°C. It fumes readily in moist air, reacting immediately with the moisture to form TiO, and HC1. History The tetrachloride was prepared as early as 1826 by DumasL who chlorinated a red hot mixture of carbon and TiO,. Since then, numerous other mixtures have been used including rutile, ilmenite, beneficiated ilmenites, titanium pigment, slags, and the various titanium metalloids such as TiN, TiCN, TiOC, and TiS2. S2Cl2, phosgene, and CC14 have been substituted for chlorine and CO has been used in place of carbon.
