This paper proposes the network of tubes as a model more closely representing real porous media than does the bundle of tubes. Capillary pressure curves are derived from network models and pore size distributions are calculated from these curves. In this way is shown the difference between the true and calculated pore size distributions when the capillary pressure curve is used to obtain pore size distribution for porous media. INTRODUCTION Despite the technological importance of the laws governing flow through porous media, many of these laws have not yet been clearly formulated. This is especially true of the laws governing multiphase flow. The static properties, such as the capillary pressure curve, are also not at present interpretable correctly in terms of the pore size distribution and other structural properties of porous media. In the absence of any well founded theoretical description of fluid flow through porous media, many empirical descriptions have been proposed. In addition to the strictly empirical flow equa- tions, some equations have been developed rigorously from simple geometrical models of the pore spaces. These equations are only as valid as is the model used in their development. The two models used in the past, the sphere pack and the bundle of tubes, have been too simple, and as a result, the equations derived from them have failed to predict the observed properties. Agreement between theory and observation has been achieved for these models by inserting parameters of doubtful physical significance. The work to be reported here was undertaken in the belief that the study of a model more closely resembling most real porous media than does the sphere pack or bundle of tubes would yield useful information concerning the structure of real porous media and the relation between structure and flow properties. There was no intention of developing any calculational procedures, as for example calculating relative permeability from capillary pressure data. The objective of the study was instead to develop a better qualitative understanding of the relation between the various measurable properties of porous media. The model chosen for study is the network of tubes in which each tube represents a pore space in the porous medium. Microscopic observations leave no doubt that sandstones and clastic carbonates are three-dimensional irregular networks of irregularly shaped pores. The irregularity of these structures makes any accurate theoretical study of their properties impossible. CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Cananea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geo- logic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline.

This paper reviews pertinent geology of the Biwabik iron formation, Mesabi Range, Minnesota. This iron formation is divisible into four members. Each member is distinctive and contains marker horizons, which are recog nizable throughout all phases of alteration from lean, fresh rock to high-grade iron ore. Some beds have a larger magnetite content than others. During the process of ore genesis, which is essentially an oxidation process, the magnetite content is lowered. Alteration from iron formation to ore includes both oxidation of iron minerals and silica removal by leaching and these distinct processes progress at variable rates for different locations and structures. Magnetic intensities, of each horizon of the iron formation are dependent chiefly upon its preoxidation magnetite content, upon the subsequent degree of oxidation, upon the character of the enclosing rocks, and on the extent of fracturing, folding, or faulting. The results of a number of magnetic surveys are described and are correlated with results of drill-hole and mine exploration and developmerit. The magnetic anomalies obtained are discussed in relation to phases of formation of ore within the iron formation. General Information One hundred years ago a party of surveyors, applying the principles of geophysical prospecting, discovered iron ore in the state of Michigan in the Lake Superior district. This event was officially reported as follows:' On Sept. 19 (1844) while running the east line of Town 47 North, Range 27 West, they observed by means of the solar compass remarkable variations in the direction of the needle, amounting to 87" from the normal. Ascribing this phenomenon to iron ore, they sought and found it in ledges or outcrops at several points. The solar compass referred to was invented by William A. Burt, deputy surveyor in charge of this party.2 It is used for determining the true meridian by an observation on the sun. Eight years later, on July 7, 1852, the first iron 're, consisting of 6 bbl. of Ore, was shipped from Marquette, Michigan. It was another 40 years before the first or> shipment left the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, in October 1892. It totaled 4245 tons. Fifty years later, 90 years after the original shipment, during 1942 the Lake Superior district shipped 93,495,392 gross tons of iron ore. Production came from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario, Canada. Throughout the 90-Year period it was known that magnetic properties of most of the ore bodies, and of the iron formations in which they occur, affected the compass. TWINNED metal crystals are usually designated as either deformation twins or annealing twins. If twins are to be classified according to the treatment the metal has undergone just prior to the obser vation of the twins, there are two other possible groups: (1) solidification twins,? when observed in the as-solidified or as-cast condition, and (2) transformation twins, ? when observed in a metal which has been cooled from above an allotropic transformation temperature. McKeehan has demonstrated that ferrite does, occasionally at least, contain twinned structures2. The twins, which he studied by optical methods, were obtained during the preparation of iron single crystals by very slow cooling through A3. He proved that the twin relation was actually that which previous investigators had predicted; namely, twinning along three planes of the form {112}. Since McKeehan's discovery, little or no attention has-been given to this transformation twinning of alpha iron, or to the possibility that it might occur at all speeds of cooling from above A3 instead of merely during the prepara-tion of single crystals. McKeehan's twins were evidently regarded as interesting only in proving that a body-centered cubic metal could form twinned structures-at least under certain conditions. It is generally believed that iron seldom if ever forms annealing twins. Certainly the straight-line banding which is so abundant in annealed face-centered cubic metals is characteristically absent in iron annealed below A3. Launching a panel session isn't easy but after Associate Dean Howard Hartman from Pennsylvania State had made his statement, it was obvious that the balloon would go up. Hartman sees a crisis and gave its dimensions. Even with enrollments declining, there are not enough graduates being recruited by the mineral industry. Opportunities in the mining field are not attractive to youth in the face of competition from other disciplines. Nor will we be able to fill our ranks with good men from other engineering disciplines because they won't be attracted either. Salaries are too low. In 1966, mining engineers from Penn State averaged $660 per month starting. The average of all other engineers was $683 per month. The mining engineers ranked seventh out of nine disciplines. The bad image of the mineral field is created in part by industry which offers poor working conditions and inconsequential jobs and in part by the schools which have unimaginative curricula and poor teaching. Hartman called for immediate action and had his own set of solutions ready. "The gut of the problem is pay. Boost starting engineers $100 to $150 a month and older employees in commensurate manner. Compensate for poor working locations by better environment on the job." He did not fail to add that improvement of the public image of the mineral industry is needed. He called for elimination of all of the "schisms," or subdivisions of mineral industry curricula, and suggested a unified curriculum with a name such as "Geo-engineering."

Mr. Cottrell : I omitted to speak of the cost of installation. The precipitation-plant at the Balaklala smelter, up to the time of initial operation, including the construction of flues, installation of the apparatus, etc., cost $107,000, and subsequent modifications probably represented at least $15,000 more. Upon the information gained in this plant, the installation at the cement-mill, handling nearly twice as much gas, has been reduced in cost in a number of ways, but the overhead construction, carrying the precipitator at the top of the stacks, is naturally expensive, yet, even so, the total cost of construction will probably not greatly exceed $150,000. The mechanical details of the tubular form last shown have been worked out more recently than those of the plate form, and the tubular form promises to be still less expensive in construction, as you would naturally expect. The cost of operat-ing the plant varies somewhat with the character of the gases used. The amount of power consumed is not determined by the tonnage of the material collected, but by the volume of gas to be handled. It takes as much power to precipitate a thin cloud as a dense one. In the cement-plant they are getting a higher efficiency; i. e., a greater number of cubic feet treated per kilowatt than in the earlier plants. This is perhaps partly due to higher temperature of the gases, which here average about 450° C. The best figures on the cement-plant are between 3 kw. and 4 kw. Of

The Blind River mining camp in Canada is all set to stage a major revolution. Enthusiasts on the scene say it will bring large-scale mining to North American uranium operation. If orebodies already discovered live up to their promise, it will be anything but the usual business of a few men handpicking orebearing rock out of small mines. Because of the geological structure of the region referred to generally as the Algoma district the ore may prove an extremely lucrative enterprise for years to come. The present center of activity is in Ontario about 75 miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, and just north of Lake Huron. It stacks up as one of the large uranium discoveries in the Western Hemisphere. For a change modern mining machinery working against large ore faces of predictable grade will enable mine operators to send a product to mills of several thousand tons daily capacity. Ore shapes-up as worth more than $20 per ton. Already, many millions of tons of ore have been outlined and apparently reserves are sufficient to keep the proposed large mills going for decades. And the end is not yet in sight. This region in the Sudbury subdivision has been known for decades as having occasionally rich but sporadic occurrences of nickel, gold, pyrite, and other minerals. Because of the unpredictable mineralization for more than 80 miles along the contact line of a huge reversed "S" there was no record of successfully organized mining in the district-until the present one.

DENSITY data are reported on 16 saturated hydrocarbon vapors at pressures ranging from 1000 to 8220 lb. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35° to 250°F. These data have been used to extend the compressibility-factor chart for natural gases up to 10,000 lb. per sq. in. The relatively large quantity of high-boiling constituents present in high-pressure vapors in equilibrium with crude oils makes it necessary to include in the analysis of the gas the molecular weight, density, and possibly boiling range of the heptanes and heavier fraction. Relationships have been presented by which the density of gases may be obtained directly from the temperature, pressure, and gas gravity provided the gases have a common source or are similar in composition. INTRODUCTION The densities of natural gases are necessary in many engineering computations in petroleum production and utilization. Gas reserves, changes in reservoir pressure, gradients in gas wells, metering of gases, pipeline flow, and compression of gases are typical problems requiring the density of the gas. A decade ago, engineering computations used ideal gas laws with deviations up to 500 lb. per sq. in.4 Recent discoveries of pools having pressures up to 7500 lb. per sq. in., and installation of pressure-maintenance and recycling plants, have increased the need for data on gas density at high pressures. METHODS OF COMPUTATION The accepted method of computing the density or specific volume of natural gases is the use of the ideal gas law corrected by a compressibility factor. The method proposed by Kay7 of correlating compressibility factors for gaseous mixtures on pseudocritical properties5 appears to be satisfactory for natural gases.2 The methane-compressibility factor has been shown to deviate systematically from the behavior of natural gases2 and a chart giving these corrected factors is available. A method of computing specific volume of gaseous mixtures from partial molal volumes has been reported by Sage and Lacey.8 Complete data for the computation are not yet available for all hydrocarbon gases. Most of the reported data on gas densities have been in the single-phase region removed from the dew point or saturation condition. Since most gases in the reservoir or while on contact with liquid during flow are saturated, the determination of densities under conditions of saturation is particularly important. Although there is no reason to believe that the saturated gases differ in behavior from those considerably removed from their dew points, the usual experimental determinations find difficulty on approaching the dew-point conditions. This paper reports the density of 16 saturated gases in equilibrium with crude oils. The relationships developed to compute the density of gases to high pressure' have been modified and enlarged. A simplified method of obtaining gas density is presented in the form of charts, which apply for specific groups of gases.

The No. 2 unit of the West Mill of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co., which went into commission Apr. 17, 1912, is structurally a twin of the No. 1 unit, which was started Nov. 9, 1909. Up to the point where the ore enters the concentrating-de-partment, it follows precisely the process described by G. Cae-tani in his article entitled, Milling of Lead-Silver Ores,' under the heading, Preparation of the Mill-Ore. The process from this point forward, in the No. 2 section, is outlined on the accompanying flow-sheet. In describing it I shall attempt to analyze the products of each separate process. The constancy of the tonnage and the uniformity of the quality of the feed render this practicable. No. 1.—550 tons of feed, all having passed 30 mm., is washed into two 15-mm. trommels, 4 ft, in diameter, 60 in. long, 17 rev. per min., 1 in. slope, 3/8-in. gauge steel.

The effect of using an anionic collector, Reagent 308, a sodium petroleum sulfonate, with a cationic collector, Armac T, a tallow, fatty acid amine acetate, was studied in a series of monomineralic flotation trials with the alkali feldspars and heavy minerals, ilmenite, rutile, garnet, and monazite. This combination of cationic and anionic collectors is employed to float feldspar and heavy minerals from quartz in the beneficiation of sand in Normanville, South Australia, to produce a suitable quartz sand for glassmaking. In the alkali feldspar trials, Armac T additions were held constant, while the 308 additions were varied. In the heavy mineral trials, the 308 was held constant while the Armac T was varied. Peak enhancement of the feldspar recovery was noted when the 308 additions were between 25% and 150% that of the Armac T additions. At higher 308 addition, depression of feldspar flotation occurred. This appears to be due to a neutralizing effect in the combined collector system and to the formation of a nondissociating complex of both collectors. This variability in flotation response when Armac T is used with 308 suggests that the two collectors do not act independently of each other.

• One effect of the British devaluation of the Pound Sterling, with its resultant lowering of the pay limit, was the addition of considerable tonnages of previously marginal ore in gold mining. Crown Mines, Ltd., reported that 1,245,000 tons of such ore had been added to available reserves. But for devaluation, a steady decline in ore reserves had been a feature of operations during the previous ten years, and would have continued. •Loree Colliery of the Hudson Coal Co. is using a Humphrey spiral cleaning plant to meet requirements of the state in the matter of stream pollution. However, the process is producing a salable product. •Noranda is considering plans for constructing a commercial sized unit designed to produce elemental sulphuric acid and sintered iron oxide from pyrite. Test plant results have indicated the No. 5 ore zone can be treated by the new process economically. •A magnetic fluid clutch, and magnetic amplifiers for motor and generator control, have been developed under Navy contract by Vickers' Electric Division, in St. Louis, Mo. This constitutes the first commercial production of the clutch recently developed by the Bureau of Standards. •Fuel experts estimate coal production will run up to 500 million tons this year based on the expectation that business conditions will continue to be good. They also expect that in the future the use of coal will increase by 50 pct over today's level. These expectations are based on the fact that it provides the bulk of the heat, light, and power for making steel, for manufacturing, and for generating electricity as well as the development of the coal burning gas turbine and processes for making gas, gasoline, and oil from coal. •Entombed miners may benefit from a two-way communication system which utilizes the earth's strata as a network for electric signals. The use of FM radio waves makes this possible. The invention includes a portable transmitter-receiver unit kept near the face, and a more powerful portable equipment of the same sort above ground. In use, two probes on wires from the apparatus are driven into the earth. • The Union of South Africa has launched a uranium production project which government leaders think will help the West maintain world atomic supremacy. Experiments under way in the pilot plants are expected to lead to the establishment of a chain of processing factories along the Witwatersrand in which uranium will be reclaimed from gold tailing. •Recent developments in mechanized mining at the Bureau of Mines oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo., have lowered mining costs to 29 cents per ton of shale. The cost of producing crude shale oil from 30-gal-per-ton-shale, using the new mining and processing techniques, would be about $1.50 per barrel. This is 500 lower than any previously stated price. • COMINCO is planning to open the old Bluebell lead-zinc mine near Nelson, B. C., on a 500-ton-per-day basis. The old workings will be pumped and a 970-ft incline sunk. A mill will be constructed at the property.

The casting alloy 88 copper, 10 tin, 2 zinc, commonly known in England as Admiralty metal and in this country as Government bronze, gun metal, or Naval Department composition G, has, at its best, many valuable properties. However, its physical properties are known to vary widely with slight changes in method of manufacture of the castings, such as slight variations in composition, variation in pouring temperature, kind of mold used, method of pouring and gating of molds, size and shape of castings, amount and kind of heat treatment, and so forth.' The microstructure of castings made from this alloy is influenced by slight variations of composition, rate of cooling, and kind and length of heat treatment. This is best understood by reference to the equilibrium diagram. The part of the diagram in which we are interested and the effect of the thermal equilibrium relations on the physical properties of the alloy 88 copper, 10 tin, 2 zinc, have been discussed by Hoyt, Campbell, Primrose, and Rawdon.2 In Fig. 1 is given the equilibrium diagram of the copper-tin alloys. Briefly stated, the relations of composition and temperature changes are as follows. Compositions between A and a consist of but one constit ent—the a bronze, which is a solid solution of copper and tin, rich in copper. On cooling from the molten state these compositions gradually crystallize, at temperatures above 790°, into a mass of interwoven treelike crystals or dendrites. The cores of the dendrites are rich in copper and the percentage of tin gradually increases as the surfaces are approached. AS cooling progresses, after a11 the metal has crystallized, no further changes occur in the crystals other than diffusion within the crystals, which tends to erase the dendritic pattern and to render the structure more homogeneous. * Metallurgical Ceramist, U. Basic features occurring on tensile fracture surfaces in rock are hackle marks, steps, and rib marks. Rib marks define the leading edge of the fracture and indicate that it was free of irregularities. In turn, fractures characterized by these features are believed to have propagated elastically and to be truly brittle. On the other hand, most fractures in rock exhibit hackle marks and steps in a plumose arrangement, indicating a ductile fracture process. Accordingly, the edge of the fracture apparently advances by extending en echelon fingers, each of which is in turn a small plumose fracture. Plastic-like deformation takes place in this zone prior to complete rupture. Some of the propagation is directed sideways and some shearing also occurs in this direction. Such lateral movement contributes little to forward propagation and may make this process particularly sensitive to load rate and duration and help account for greater fracture strengths of materials under dynamic loads.

Progress on the earth depends to a large extent upon the rapid interchange of ideas and commodities between the various nations of the world. The smooth flow of commerce, by which these ideas and commodities move, is accelerated by accurate and complete maps of the various land and water areas of the earth. The production of accurate maps depends upon a complete knowledge of the figure and dimensions of the object to be charted, therefore a knowledge of the shape of the earth is a prime necessity for accurate charting purposes. Gravity observations were first undertaken to aid in determining the shape of the earth so that the geodetic surveys of its land and water areas might be more accurately connected to form an undistorted map. A large part of the earth's surface is water and it is therefore necessary to get gravity values at sea as well as on land before a complete and accurate figure of the earth can be determined. Dr. F. A. Vening Meinesz, of Holland, was the first scientist to perfect a pendulum instrument that would accurately measure gravity at sea. He had previously developed a multiple pendulum apparatus for measuring gravity upon swampy and unstable land areas in Holland and it was therefore quite natural that he should adapt the instrument to give accurate results upon a still more unstable support, the surface of the sea. His instrument as perfected gives satisfactory results when mounted in gimbals on any vessel where the roll and pitch are not more than about 5" and where the vibrations from rotating machinery and wave action are not large enough to cause the pendulums to shift on the knife-edges. This degree of stability can be obtained on surface craft only in protected waters or on very calm days. Therefore, Dr. Meinesz mounted his instrument in a submarine so that he could submerge below the disturbed surface waters and get the desired stability in nearly any kind of weather by simply diving to greater depths. Most of the gravity-at-sea work has been done with a Meinesz instrument and a very large number of the observations have been made by Dr. Meinesz himself. PROGRESS on the earth depends to a large extent upon the rapid inter-change of ideas and commodities between the various nations of the world. The smooth flow of commerce, by which these ideas and com-modities move, is accelerated by accurate and complete maps of the various land and water areas of the earth, The production of accurate maps depends upon a complete knowledge of the figure and dimensions of the object to be charted, therefore a knowledge of the shape of the earth is a prime necessity for accurate charting purposes. Gravity observa-tions were first undertaken to aid in determining the shape of the earth so that the geodetic surveys of its land and water areas might be more accurately connected to form an undistorted map. A large part of the earth's surface is water and it is therefore necessary to get gravity values at sea as well as on land before a complete and accurate figure of the earth can be determined. Dr. F. A. Vening Meinesz, of Holland, was the first scientist to perfect a pendulum instrument that would accurately measure gravity at sea. He had previously developed a multiple pendulum apparatus for measur-ing gravity upon swampy and unstable land areas in Holland and it was therefore quite natural that he should adapt the instrument to give accurate results upon a still more unstable support, the surface of the sea. His instrument as perfected gives satisfactory results when mounted in gimbals on any vessel where the roll and pitch are not more than about 5° and where the vibrations from rotating machinery and wave action are not large enough to cause the pendulums to shift on the knife-edges. This degree of stability can be obtained on surface craft only in protected waters or on very calm days. THE mine blacksmith and drill-steel sharpening shop at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. is on the surface, adjoining the main shaft. It is a brick building, 51 by 30 ft. inside dimensions, with a corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. About two-thirds of the steels used are brought up through the main shaft; the remainder through two auxiliary shafts. The latter are carried to the shop by team or truck. At each shaft sufficiently large stocks of sharp drills of various types are kept to replace all the dull steels that may be sent up; while at the shop enough sharp drills are kept to replace the dull steels in. the stocks kept at the auxiliary shafts. Though this entails keeping a larger number of drill steels in service than might be required by other methods, there is less hurry in the sharpening shop and the steels have a longer period of rest. If a rest from use enables steel to recover from fatigue strains, this method secures that rest. The forms shown in Fig. 1 are supplied to each shift boss in books of 100. These are used to requisition sharp drills from the shaft stocks and enable the men at the tops of the shafts to sort out the required sizes and to have them ready to be sent to the various shaft stations. At one of the auxiliary shafts, the dull drills are placed on a platform from which they are dumped into the body of the wagon that takes them to the shop.

Attention is called to the changes in officers of the Committee, whereby Albert Sauveur becomes Vice-Chairman, and Herbert M. Boylston, Secretary. Three new members of the Committee have been added, as follows : J. Esrey Johnson, Jr., William Kelly, William R. Walker. The death of Dr. F. WV. C. Schniewind is a severe personal blow to the members of the Committee, as well as a loss on the technical side that will be hard to fill. During the absence of Mr. Kirchhoff in Europe the activities of the Committee will be under the charge of Professor Sauveur.
