In the death of Professor Hofman, the world has lost a great metallurgist and a great author of metallurgical literature. Measured in time, his life was not quite seventy-two years, but measured in work accomplished it was much longer than this. He was born Aug. 13, 1852 and died Apr. 28, 1924. It is not surprising that Doctor Hofman became a great scholar, for his father, Karl Hofman, was on the faculty of Heidelberg University, and his early days were spent in those surroundings. Identified and utilized Arizona salt deposits are of two ages: 1) Permian in the Colorado Plateau, and 2) Tertiary in the Basin and Range country. Uses include: a) storage of energy fluids in man-made solution cavities in both Permian (Supai Formation) and Tertiary (Luke salt body) salt and b) production of marketable products by solution and evaporation of tertiary salt. The two liquid petroleum storage Projects have a combined storage capacity in excess of 380 million L (100 million gal). Current production of salt products approximates 32 kt/a (32,000 stpy). Increasing demand for both storage and salt products is anticipated.

Plans for the Petroleum Division during the ensuing year are in process of development, in contemplation of the usual fall meetings in the Mid-Continent and California areas, as well as the annual meeting to be held in New York in February, 1936. Houston, Texas has been suggested as the place for the Mid-Continent fall meeting, the exact date to be announced shortly. During the past year, the Division's technical programs, as in former years, have emphasized the wide fields of engineering endeavor in the petroleum industry yet remaining for more thorough investigation and discussion. An effort has been made to bring an international interest into the proceedings of the Division by inviting the participation of prominent foreign technologists. This viewpoint should promote a continuation in 1935 of past high standards, afford a more thorough understanding of problems throughout the membership, and maintain the Institute's position among the various technical organizations functioning particularly in the oil-producing and refining areas. In the list of subjects proposed for the fall meetings is the problem of estimating petroleum reserves. Various factors requiring study will include productive sand volume, porosity, average permeability, saturation, and types of recovery. Research papers are proposed dealing with energy consumption per unit of oil recovered, reservoir pressure or energy loss relationship to the usual volumetric method of estimation, and the study of oil and gas segregation within the reservoir. Other subjects tentatively suggested include new casing practice in relationship to wells producing from several productive zones, progress in lifting methods, repressuring, advanced methods in drilling economies, and the economics of conservation. Although the threat of overproduction yet remains, to a lesser degree than during the past few years, intensive activity is now being directed towards the discovery of new petroleum reserves. This situation undoubtedly will influence, in some considerable degree, the channels through which technical activities will be directed. A continuation of the commendable work on production statistics for the various oil-producing states and foreign countries has been effected. The usual papers dealing with the general economics of the industry will be reserved for the annual New York Meeting. The Stabilization Committee maintains its membership of nationwide authorities, and interest is manifest in new developments to meet the changing requirements of the industry.

C W. ROLFE, Professor of Geology, Emeritus, has of-fered a prize of $250 for the most valuable contribu-tion toward a new, better, or increased use of any mineral resource of the State of Illinois. The prize is open to anyone engaged in research, either privately, commercially, or in connection with any univer-sity or college staff, or any state or national bureau or sur-vey. The work must have been done, or at least completed, curing the year named. Three copies of the paper or books must be in the hands of the chairman of the committee on or before 6 p. m., May 1, 1928. If an unpublished paper is submitted, it should be typewritten, double spaced, on 8 1/2 by 11-in. paper. Unpublished results of study, or papers or books pub-lished since May 1, 1927, and before May 1, 1928, may be offered in the competition; but the results of the study must show real present or prospective economic value. An investigation of the factors af-fec.ting the inter-zonal flow of fluids in the casing-wellbore annrc1rt.s of an oil or gas ivell is presented Laborntory tests revealed that failure of the caring-cement bond allows communi-cation of fluid at pressure differentials near 1.000 psi. Perforating with a 11011011: carrier gun does not shatter or crack the cement sufficiently to allow communication through these cracks and does not seriously affect the casing-cement bond failure pressure. The pressure to cause communication at the casing-cement bond can he increared to 3,000 psi by. limiting pipe deformation during cementing and subsequent operations. Communication can be prevented, however. up to pressures sufficient to cause the cement to fail or the casing to col-lapse, by attaching to the casing a seal ring of deformable ruhber molded between two steel flanges. When installed, one flange is attached rigidlv to the casing to serve as back-up for the gasket While tile other flange is movable. To date, these gasket seal rings have been field-tested in 27 Wells. Althotrgh communication has been noted in two wells, inter-zonal flow has been prevented in other wells in the same area by installing more seal rings between the communicaring zones. INTRODUCTION The inter-zonal flow of fluids behind casing cemented in oil wells during normal production or stimulation operations is a major operating problem. If it cccurs during production operations. it can seriously limit the pressure to which a reservoir may be depleted without harmful invasion of unwanted fluids. If it occurs during stimulation operations, it may preclude the possibility of stimulating the desired zone. This communication can be caused by failure of the bond between the casing and cement, failure of the bond between the cement and formation, or failure of the cement itself. This paper presents the results of an investigation of factors affecting com-munication at the casing-cement bond and methods which aid in preventing it. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS The laboratory tests performed in this study were divided into three phases. The first phase consisted of tests to determine if perforating would shatter and crack the cement sheath so severely that communication would occur through the cement itself. The second phase consisted of tests to determine more precisely the cause for the casing-cement bond failure. The third phase consisted of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of various de-formable seals attached to the casing in preventing communication. EFFECT OF PERFORATING, The effect of perforating was invest~gated in tests performed with apparatus shown on Fig. 1. Cement was poured into the annulur space hetween 5%-in. casing and 8%-in. casing and allowed to cure for 72 hours. The apparatus was then perforated with a hollow carrier gun containing eight duPont 26-A shaped charges. Bull plugs were placed over the perforations in the 8 5/8-in. casing and hydraulic pressure was applied inside the 5 1/2i-in. casing. The pressure to cause fluid communication past the cement sheath was observed and termed the "bond failure pressure". Several different cement compositions were included in these tests, the results of which are shown in Table 1. In Tests 1 through 4 of Table 1, bond failure occurred at- the inter- .

ALTHOUGH the refining period of the heat is generally defined A as starting after the charge has been completely melted, it may more properly be considered as beginning with the first efforts to facilitate the shaping up of the slag and the making of corrective additions for the control of slag or metal composition. Such actions may be initiated during the latter half of the lime boil. The early part of the refining period may, then, in essence overlap the latter part of the melting period. The primary aims of the refining period are: (1) to reduce phosphorus and sulfur from the steel bath to levels safely below the maximum contents specified; (2) to eliminate carbon to a specified level as rapidly as possible and still allow time for proper conditioning of the slag and attainment of the necessary bath temperature; and (3) to have the heat ready for tapping or furnace deoxidation, with slag in the proper physical and chemical condition, and with carbon and oxygen contents and the temperature of the steel at the proper levels for the composition and grade of steel being produced. The particular conditions that fulfill these aims are distinctly different, depending upon whether the steel is to be finished according to fully killed semikilled, or rimming practice and also depending upon the carbon range specified. Regardless of the type of charging practice employed, the object of the refining period is to produce repeatedly the desired finishing and tapping conditions for the grade of steel being produced. The variations and proportions of raw materials used in the charge may cause some variations in the degree of control required during refining, but not in the method of control. The refining period can therefore be discussed from a viewpoint largely independent of charging and melting practice. The manganese ore reserves of Lake Superior, because of their location and nature, have recently achieved a rnarked degree of importance as compared with the world's manganese reserves. To appreciate fully the significance and the adequacy of this reserve, one should understand how such ores are used, where obtainable, the quantity used, possible avenues for increasing use or application, and the chemical and physical characteristics of the available ores. Only with those data at hand, is it possible to arrive at a convincing answer to the question whether the reserves of manganiferous iron ores are adequate to satisfy the annual demand of the presently known iron ores for the full life of the latter. That they should last is vital; and to ascertain whether they will last was the purpose of the present investigation, which marks the first attempt to study these Lake Superior reserves. The Lake Superior region possesses and supplies the full assortment of iron ores needed for the conversion of ore into pig iron and steel ingots and castings. These ores are named bessemer, low-phosphorus and high-phosphorus non-bessemer, manganiferous and siliceous; and to include the term aluminiferous would be in keeping with the most recent nomenclature adopted by some dealers. About 35 or 40 years ago, perhaps less, most of the Lake Superior ore which is being used today was the material then considered either useless or too poor for immediate use; perhaps it was considered no more than a future reserve. An examination of the analyses of ores and the guarantees in the sales of those older times convince one that the opinions of those days must have been governed by only small differences in analyses. Some grades of ores used today in substantial amounts were used most sparingly only one or two decades ago. The relative quantities of the different ores used are ever changing; and, bit by bit, the metallurgy and the opinions are ever changing and the prejudices against certain ores and practices decrease. This is unquestionably more pronounced for the manganiferous ores than for any other kind. If, when using the present data for manganiferous ores, we will only be content to make allowances for the same experiences other kinds of ores

DURING the time I was in charge, of this mine, from 1914 to 1915, I had occasion to read the interesting papers by T. T. Read and C. M. Weld about these deposits, to find how far their observations corroborated mine. To quote from the paper on "The Mineral Production and Resources of China" by T. T. Read:' "The iron ores at Tayeh lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark gray syenitic rock. * * * * At one place it is slightly magnetic, apparently having been partly reduced to the magnetic oxide by the action of reducing solutions, which have deposited small amounts of copper and iron sulphides along the foot wall." To quote from the paper on "The Tayeh Iron Ore Deposits"2 by C. M. Weld: "I find the orebodies described as occurring along an approximately E-W contact between horn-blende-granite and limestone. * * * * The granite is a granitoid rock consisting essentially of quartz, potash-feldspar and hornblende." These quotations show the differences of opinion entertained by two observers. My own study of these interesting deposits has been intermittent amid the manifold duties devolving upon a superintendent. General Description of the Deposits The deposits are situated to the west of the Yangtse River, being con¬nected with the river by a standard-gage railroad of 56 li (16.16 miles, 26 km.) in length, as shown in Fig. 1. The general topography of the region is of mature age, showing broad valleys with sluggishly meandering streams. These deposits are worked as two mines, named the Tieh Shan Mining Department and the Teh Tao Wan Mining Department; the former consisting of three orebodies more or less connected, named Tieh Man Kan, Sha Mau Tze and Lung Tung, and the latter consisting of Chang Pei Shan, Sze Tze Shan, Ta Shih Men, Yeh Chih Ping and Tsin Shan, also more or less connected, as shown in Fig. 2.

IN AS MUCH as the interesting changes in the economics of the zinc industry are covered nowhere else in this issue, and they are related to technological progress in the metallurgy of zinc, some reference to prices and production will first be made. The latter part of 1939 is outstanding in the large war demand for metals including zinc, whereas in the first eight months the demand for zinc was subnormal. The cause of the rapid in- crease in demand was the European war and hence the future is problematical. When the year began zinc was in the doldrums, with low prices, and continued thus until August when an advance in price started, reaching 6.5. per pound early in October. (Prime Western, St. Louis.) Rapid changes in the price of any metal are viewed adversely by the metal industry. The persistent low price for zinc of 4 to 49512 for about two years curtailed production and in one instance closed one large plant for a brief period.

Concentration of fine quartz particles at the iso-octane/water interface has been investigated under different conditions of pH and dodecylamine concentration. The results obtained from the related studies on the effect of amine concentration and pH on the interfacial tension, adsorption density, electrokinetic potential, contact angle, and concentration of the various amine species in the system are presented. A good correlation was obtained between these different variables. It is well-known that very fine mineral particles are difficult to float in conventional flotation machines. Flotation rate studies have revealed that the rate of flotation of fine mineral particles is much smaller than that of coarser size fractions. The theories accounting for this behavior have been discussed by Arbiter and Harris1 and also Meloy.2 Theoretically, a hydrophobic fine particle might never make contact with a bubble because of the presence of an energy barrier in the vicinity of the air/water interface.' This energy barrier will have electrostatic, hydrodynamic, and Van der Waals force components. It was thought that by using an oil phase instead of air the energy barrier would be decreased so that fine particles could be concentrated at the oil/water interface more readily than at the air/water interface. The technique used involves dispersing the fine particles in water, containing the appropriate chemical reagents, and injecting a fine dispersion of iso-octane oil droplets into the pulp. After vigorous conditioning, the pulp is passed into a separating column where the oil droplets coated with a layer of mineral particles rise to the surface to form a separate layer. Air is introduced into the base of the separating column to ensure that heavy agglomerates of oil and particles report with the organic layer. This technique has been described previously4 and adopted by Lai and Fuerstenau5 who studied the alumina-dodecyl sulfonate system. The interfacial phenomena in the system composed of hematite, water, and iso-octane in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate have been studied and the results reported" earlier. This paper describes the results obtained from investigations into the interfacial phenomena in the quartz/water/iso-octane system in the presence of dodecylamine. The technique used in measuring the interfacial tension, electrokinetic potential, contact angle, and adsorption density were similar to those described previously? Materials Selected pieces of a high purity natural quartz, from the Isle of Man, were crushed in a laboratory jaw crusher and pulverizer. The — 52+72 mesh size fraction was retained and leached with successive washes of hot concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove iron impurities. When no iron was detected in the solution by ammonium thiocyanate, the quartz was washed thoroughly with distilled water until the conductivity of the wash water assumed that of the distilled water. Samples of 25 g of the —52+72 mesh quartz were ground for 5.25 min in an agate vibratory mill. The ground product was 100% —44 m and 57% —10 am, as determined by the Andreasen pipette. The specific surface area of the sample used for the adsorption and flotation tests was 0.94 sq m g-l. This corresponds to a mean particle diameter of 2.4 am. The —44 am quartz sample was stored under vacuum in the presence of silica gel crystals. For the contact angle determination between the three phases, quartz, iso-octane, and water, a piece of the natural quartz was ground into a block about 15 mm long, 15 mm wide, and 5 mm thick. One surface of the block was then polished by successively finer grades of silicon carbide "paper." The final polishing was conducted with alumina on a "hyprocel" paper. The polished quartz specimen was cleaned using nitric acid and ethyl alcohol followed by a wash with distilled water and then stored under distilled water. This pro-

I. INTRODUCTION VOLCANIC origin. was among the first of the theories advanced to account for the occurrence of the salt domes of the Gulf coastal plain, northern Louisiana., and eastern Texas, and it is still being re-stated in various forms by the most recent contributors to our knowledge of the geology of such deposits. Argument has been largely by analogy and attention has repeatedly been called to the Mexican oil fields, particularly those of the Tampico-Tuxpam region, because of the occurrence of oil in close proximity to volcanic plugs in those fields, an occurrence supposed to have some resemblance to the common occurrence of oil in the salt domes of the United States. The author, having spent several months of the past year in a general study of salt domes and in a detailed study of certain domes in the United States, and having been acquainted for some time with the exploration of similar domes in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, Mexico, and with the general geology of the Tampico-Tuxpam region, Mexico, has reviewed the various theories of volcanic origin for salt domes which have been advanced to the present time. The purpose of this paper is to present such review and to discuss the supposed Mexican analogy.

THE purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature trans- formations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.1 Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation [(M,)] during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transfoi mation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metallographic3 and dilatmetric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Steward7 have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic techniques may be used not only for [M,] determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. In fact, the latter investigators have observed the amount of martensite formed as a function of temperature below [M,] in fourteen commercial steels. In the present paper, the Greninger- Troiano technique has been combined with the lineal method of Howard and Cohen9 to provide a unique, quantitative treatment of the austenite-martensite reaction. Furthermore, isothermal transformations have been similarly measured on holding at temperatures above and below M,, thus permitting a fairly detailed presentation of the lower part of the conventional austenite transformation diagram. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Materials The steels, listed in Table I, were selected for study because they exhibit a satisfactory range of M, temperatures and have not received as much attention as the lower carbon grades. It has long been recognized that, for a crystal to undergo an arbitrary shape change by crystallographic shear, at least five independent shear systems must be activated. Taylor1 analyzed the deformation of fcc crystals by {111}<110> slip and showed that the principle of minimum work could be used to determine which combination of slip systems might act to produce a given shape change. Later Bishop and Hi112 attacked the same problem by first identifying the state of stress which could physically activate five or more {111)(110) systems simultaneously and then invoking the principle of maximum virtual work to determine which combination would act for a given shape change. Taylor&apos;s general approach has been used to calculate the active slip systems and the relative strengths during axisymmetric flow of cubic crystals with other deformation modes, including {112}<111> slip3 and {111}<112> twinning.&apos; It is the purpose of this note to identify the stress states capable of activating simultaneously five or more of these systems. {111}<112> Twinning. The {111}<112> systems are defined in Table I and illustrated in Fig. 1. The sense of the shears are those for twinning in fcc crystals. The shear stress on any system may be written in terms of the stress components expressed relative to the 1,2,3 cube axes. For example, the stress For five or more of the systems ij to be activated simultaneously, it is necessary that Tij/T be equal to unity in at least five of the expressions [3], while Tij < T for the remainder. (These restrictions assume that the same shear stress T is required to activate each system and that the shear stress on any system cannot exceed that for its activation.) The discrete values of the stress components A through H which can satisfy these restrictions are listed in Table II together with the values of Tij/T for all systems. It may be noted that Tij/ T is not necessarily zero on all nonactive systems as found by Bishop and Hill for <110> {111} slip. In fact, for the case of twinning Tij/T may reach negative values as large as -2 for shear stress in the reverse direction, Table 11. This means that, if those stress states are to be valid, the shear stress to activate reverse twinning must be greater than twice that for forward twinning. Such stress states are probably valid in view of the directionality of the twinning process. There has been no documentation of reverse twinning thus far. It may be noted that the stress states fall into four classes, which may simultaneously activate eight, six, six, and five twin systems respectively. These solutions may be applied to the {112}(111)

The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature transforrnations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.&apos; Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation (Mg) during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transformation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metal-lographic3 and dilatometric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Stewardi have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic technique8 may be used not only for M, determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. In fact, the latter investigators have observed the amount of martensite formed as a function of temperature below M, in fourteen commercial steels. Your esteemed favors transmitting my discharge as your representative on the War Minerals Committee have come duly to hand and the kind words of commendation contained are greatly appreciated. Like other war committees, The War Minerals Committee&apos;s business in Washington was to meet an emergency as best it could, and as soon as the emergency had passed pressure of personal responsibilities immediately scattered the individual members. A detailed report of the Committee&apos;s work is therefore impossible. But before the matter is closed I feel it incumbent on me to ask you to report to the Directors and the Council, and through them to the members of the Institute and of the Society, the inestimable value to our Committee of the unstinted support given by both your officers and members. The instant response to all requests for funds was of the greatest assistance in getting started with office force, stationery, etc., and led later to a regular organization in the Bureau of Mines, working under a special appropriation, which is still doing good work as the War Minerals Investigation under Dr. Spurr. The voluntary work of the special sulphur and manganese committees formed by the War Minerals Committee was of great value to the Government. Copies of private reports supplied were of much assistance. But the great service of engineers and geologists as a whole was rendered in connection with the passage of the War Minerals Bill by Congress. Though every assistance possible was rendered by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, by the close of 1917 our Committee had about reached the limit of its usefulness in the way of stimulating the various Government executive committees, bureaus and departments to a realization of the country&apos;s need of preparation for domestic production of "war minerals" and had found that special Congressional action was imperative if the war was to continue for anything like the time then generally feared. This was necessary not only &apos;to insure a. supply of war minerals but to make possible the appointment of some able mining administrator of large experience in the mineral industry who, with ample authority, could sit in the councils of the Government and see to it that the ever increasing autocratic powers the war was developing were used toward the mining industry so as to foster rather than crush the latter in its effort to produce sufficient raw material for war and essential civil requirements.
